Spring, 1648.

When Thomas Hill, a bookseller living in rural Hampshire, publishes a political pamphlet, he has little idea of the trouble that will follow. He is quickly arrested, forced on a boat to Barbados and condemned to life as a slave to two of the island's most notoriously violent brothers.

In England war has erupted again, with London under threat of attack. When news of the king's execution reaches the island, political stability is threatened, and a fleet commanded by Sir George Ayscue arrives to take control of the island for Cromwell. The threat of violence increases. Thomas finds himself witness to abuse, poison, rape and savage brutality. When a coded message from Ayscue to a sympathiser on the island is intercepted, Thomas is asked to decipher it. A disastrous battle seems inevitable.

But nothing turns out as planned. And as the death toll mounts, the escape Thomas has been relying on seems ever more unlikely....

Wonderfully crafted - takes us to the British Caribbean island where we encounter the cruelties of slavery and the indentured servitude measures of the times as well as the social structure transferred from England, but not quite as highly structured as money from sugar cane was the currency of the day, not royal birth. However, we still see the same divisions regarding the king as there were back in England. Thomas Hill is placed in an untenable position as an indentured servant although he knows not how or by whom. He seeks nothing more than escape and to go home.

I was not surprised that Tobias Rush was heard from again but now I hope he is gone for good. Again an easy read and a good story line to keep one excited about turning the page!

David's life could turn out very, very badly. His mother dies suddenly when he is an infant. Then at age two, he is gone. Vanished, with his father, and abandoned in a far-away place. His future hangs on a Letter from Alabama, a piece of paper that must travel hundreds of miles in an envelope. Then it must land in exactly the right place in a busy office where nobody is under any obligation to read it or pay any attention to it. This is the true story of that letter, and all that will transpire because of it. It's the story of human failure, and human triumph. Forgiveness and redemption. It is a testament to, and a prayer of thanks for, good and decent people everywhere who stand up for a child when they don't have to-when they have nothing to gain and perhaps much to lose. It's a tribute to those who see the potential in a young person and give that person a chance to be the best that he or she can be. They are the heroes for whom this story is now committed to writing.

Letter from Alabama: The Inspiring True Story of Strangers Who Saved a Child and Changed a Family Forever, by David L Workman

Review Small Press Bookwatch: August 2015 James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief Midwest Book Review The Biography ShelfImpressively well written, organized and presented, "Letter from Alabama: The Inspiring True Story of Strangers Who Saved a Child and Changed a Family Forever" is a compelling and inherently fascinating read from beginning to end. An extraordinary and heartwarming account, "Letter from Alabama" is very highly recommended for community library American Biography collections. For personal reading lists it should be noted that "Letter from Alabama" is also available in a Kindle edition ($2.99).Diane Donovan, Editor Donovan's Literary Services, Sept. 2015"Letter from Alabama is a powerful memoir of the author's life, and documents what happened when, as an infant, his mother dies and his father later abandons him...leaving him with an Alabama woman who...takes a big leap of faith in mailing a letter to a newspaper in a distant state asking for help in locating the family....(It) is a study in miracles and circumstance: as much as it adds intriguing elements about small-town color, it's ultimately about how a young boy emerges from uncertain roots to become a successful man...."

From the Author An interviewer asked me what the central message of Letter from Alabama is. It comes down to four words: Every Child Absolutely Matters. This story could have turned out very differently -- very, very badly. It didn't -- because of grace and a family's love, and because of strangers who chose to make a difference. We all have the opportunity to help a child be the best that she or he can be. Letter from Alabama is a testimony to what can happen when people choose to do that.~ David Workman

From the Back Cover Be surprised, be uplifted by this inspiring true story of tragedy, courage, love and forgiveness. And by a letter from Alabama that changed everything.Take a journey to a time before instant and constant communication -- a time when people who matter to you can simply disappear. Finding them can require perseverance, resourcefulness, luck, or perhaps a miracle. Such is the story of Letter from Alabama.

A redemptive story By Doug Erlandson "Letter from Alabama" is a well-written and compelling memoir written in the third person by David Workman, whose story is fascinating, at times sad, even tragic, at other times happy, but ultimately redemptive. Born in 1950 in Ohio to a woman whose first husband left her for another woman and who is now remarried, David's mother dies a year later within 24 hours of giving birth to his younger sister, Cynthia. His father, George, who has trouble keeping a job and battles alcoholism, disappears with him, eventually leaving him with a woman in Alabama. After caring for little David for six months, this woman writes a letter to the Dayton, Ohio paper on the hope that it will get published and that someone who knows David will see it. Almost miraculously, this happen. The remainder of the story is of how David's family, particularly his older half-brothers, step in and rear him, and how, through having a caring family, he is able to succeed in life.Workman's memoir is not just well-written but well-researched as well. As a result, we are given information not just about his progenitors who came from Alsace-Lorraine and settled in middle Ohio, but also about what life was like in mid-twentieth century America.I received an electronic copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing an honest review, which I am happy to provide. This book is definitely worth reading. I became hooked in a few minutes and could barely put it down until I had finished it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. this is a fine, well written book that blends his personal story ... By R. Headley David Workman's memoir provides an inspiring, often bittersweet portrait of a boy growing into a manhood shaped and guided by loving, nurturing family. His mother dead, his father disappeared, the toddler is taken in, cared for, and eventually joins a unique, loving family. The book follows Workman from those early years through a life of personal and professional triumphs as a son, brother, husband, father, journalist, editor, writer. Full disclosure: I was lucky enough to know Workman in high school, to benefit from his knowledge working with him on our school paper, and I take pride in thinking of him as a a friend. However, that personal connection aside, this is a fine, well written book that blends his personal story with the greater events of American life in the second half of the 20th Century. Workman's celebration of family deserves to be read. R. Headley.

Endearing and Prosaic By ReadingOtherPeople Reading a novel based on a true story could turn out either really amazingly well (Into the Wild) or very, very bad (well, I don’t want to get into trouble so let’s leave this one to your imagination). David Workman’s richly detailed “Letter From Alabama” fortunately falls into the former type of novelization, and I was very thankful for that discovery.“Letter From Alabama” is a timeless piece of fiction. Telling the true story of a letter published in a small town newspaper in May 1952, Workman successfully manages to keep a neutral point of view in the often myriad of plot developments that can sometimes be difficult to endure. Tackling the overarching and weighty themes that often are depicted in many modern literary masterpieces, Workman’s weaving of the power of forgiveness and unconditional love of family demonstrates his clear talent of storytelling. For a story that takes place in the 1950’s the plot is strangely modern in its tone and subject matter. Topical themes such as blended families, broken families, and inspiration are not entirely out of place of the recent best sellers that are based in present-day. Workman’s depiction of a small child who is coming of age is relevant, timely, and timeless. Have you ever gotten tired of reading Catcher in the Rye? Didn’t think so.There’s always something soothing about hearing and reading about stories that portray a characters maturation into adulthood. Workman cleverly demonstrates the fatalistic and randomness of life. He delves into the chances people sometimes take to help others and further them along on their journey, whatever that may be. We have all known a child like David. In “Letter From Alabama” Mr. Workman does not shy away from articulating in impressive prosaic style that the power of the human soul will always prevail, and there will invariably be that person willing to take a risk to make someone’s life just a little bit better.

A woman that’s unmarried and feels loneliness in her heart will believe that this loneliness she feels is because she is single. She then spends the rest of her single life feeling incomplete or half empty. Adrienne King; like most women, experienced a season in her life where she lived to the expectations of meeting her “God sent” husband at a specific age range and when it didn’t happened she became distracted which led her to question God, develop negative thoughts , soak in self-pity and feel discontentment in her heart. She later decided to trust God completely with her life; that is when she found completeness. In this book, Women will learn how to: •Completely trust God in their season. •Accept their season and become a woman of devotion, Faith, and Freedom. •Wait patiently for their “God Sent” husband. •Become whole in Christ. •Break free from the bondage in their lives. •Shift their thinking from a negative to positive mindset. •Protect their minds and hearts from unclean spaces. •Determine the difference between alone and loneliness. •Let go of the past and forgive themselves and others in order to become whole. •Develop a deeper more intimate relationship with God. Have you ever thought God has forgotten you? Have you ever thought about “just settling” like everybody else? Do you feel discontent? Do you seize the opportunity of your season or do you choose to soak in self-pity? If you answered “Yes” to these questions then “Saved and Discontent” is written just for you. Embrace your season, Trust God and experience the amazing power of being the Whole and Content woman God has called you to be.

By Kat Lyn Nanami and her shinshi guardians race to save Ami from being trapped as a Dugong (not a dolphin as confusingly mentioned prior). But first she needs a quick recoup from dealing with Kirihito who took some of her spiritual energy. It gives Mizuki and Kurama a chance to shine at playing mediators toward the angry ocean goddess, Inari. It seems Mizuki may have some unresolved feelings from this event. I can't wait to find out how Nanami and her friends handle the menace Kirihito is becoming in the next volumes!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Story keeps getting better! By PeacefulSeraph First off, this is such a cute series! I don't want to post any spoilers here, but I'm reading this online too, and it just keeps getting better. I think it took the series awhile to gain any momentum- but now that Tomoe & Nanami are "dating", it's finally getting interesting! His unnoticed affections, and her naivete really set this book up for some good gags, and I find myself chuckling from the author's humor- which can't always be said if the story's too mushy (gag!) & focused solely on the romance aspect itself. Anyway, this series is good, & so was this book- so get it if you've enjoyed the series so far.

PDF Ebook How The Grumpy Pants Were Destroyed, by Petula Miller

A beautifully poetic tale which reveals the author's family secret of how to conquer the mood swings of a grumpy child. This book is easy to read because of its rhyming poetry and simple language. The author used the image of a pair of pants, that mirror the protagonist's mood, to help children better understand and express their emotions because they can then view 'mood' as a concrete object that can be taken off and put on at will. This teaches children that they can control their emotions because truly even young children are capable of putting on or getting rid of a bad attitude. Sample text: "Mitch was a boy who wore grumpy pants all day. He loved to wear them, even at play. They were blue and dirty from all the bad looks. They were cold and patchy where painful words took. " LARGE PRINT - perfect for grandparents and young readers.

What the description doesn't tell you is that as a bonus separate from the story the book has some helpful aids for dealing with a grumpy attitude. Reading it won't make your kids magically content, but it sure does make it a lot easier to explain certain concepts to young children. It also makes me think about my own attitude as an adult. I love the fact that it's full of rhymes, my kids love that.

The easy-to-read rhymes are clever yet fun for children learning to read. More importantly this book teaches kids to take charge and control their emotions in a way that most will understand. I highly recommend this book and plan on purchasing additional copies for family and friends with young children.

I felt intimidated by the dark, imposing murals on some of the city walls, but I only vaguely knew of the violence that took place there. I didn't really understand the motivations of the IRA and the people they fought, nor did I understand how the Irish felt about all that was taking place. Rex Owens, in his debut novel, did an amazing job of humanizing this turbulent time in history. In Ian Murphy, we are given a protagonist with which we can empathize. It is through deep grief and a love of his country that he finds himself one of the hidden leaders of the IRA. His idealistic vision of what Ireland should be leads him to write The Green Book, which becomes the training manual for all young recruits, like himself, who feel passionate about the injustices the Irish have faced. To Ian, it's not Catholic vs. Protestant; it's Irish vs. British. He tells himself that he is writing this manual to keep the recruits safe, to teach them how to survive. For decades, he turns a blind eye to what the manual truly is: a guide for causing chaos, death and destruction. When the violence hits too close to home and Ian is betrayed by someone he trusts, he is forced to come to terms with what he has done. This story of a man finding his true self through adversity helps us understand not only the deadly conflict in Ireland, but also human nature and our ability to change.

Murphy's Troubles is a must read By Frank Peot As I ready Murphy's Troubles I couldn't help but identify with the characters, their troubles, their motivations, and emotions. The entire story was real. Having lived in Ireland during the time of this story, I could identify with the characters and the places they described. Having once just missed a bombing by about forty-five minutes caused me to realize that even though this is a work of fiction it was very real. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters as they went about their daily lives with secrets from the rest of the world. Murphy's Troubles held my attention from beginning to its super surprise ending. For those who love the Irish and their history this book will help to explain the troubles and turmoils the people live with on a daily basis. Even though things are very peaceful today, the shadows of the past centuries still linger. This is an exciting love story, a mystery, a tragedy, a war story, and a very real picture of the Irish. The good, the bad, and the innocent are all woven into an intriguing tale that holds your interest throughout. It was a great book. I hope this author continues to write more in the future.

Theology wise one can hardly slide a please of paper between the Anglian and Catholic Churches, yet here is a story of people who have imaged such differences between their communities that they have created a culture and history of bigotry, hurt, killing, and revenge. Rex Owens has done a wonderful job creating a character that is caught up in the madness of making an ideology of satisfying perceived grudges. Ultimately, the blindness in his thinking is challenged by power of love and he must make a choice between holding on to his hate or seeking redemption. The author tells this compelling story by leading us through the natural and political landscapes that make Ireland distinctively Irish culminating in an ending that was surprising and satisfying. Kudos

"Fascinating, forthright, and funny . . . Mankoff also writes with first-hand knowledge about the topic of laughter itself. He dares to ask the question, 'What makes something funny?', and answers it with intelligence, originality, and, of course, humor."-Roz Chast, cartoonist for The New Yorker

Hi, this is me, Bob Mankoff. And this is my memoir. In it I'll usher you into the hallowed halls of The New Yorker (Shhh! Quiet, you'll upset the fact checkers) to show you the soup-to-nuts process of cartoon creation, giving you a detailed look not only at my own work, but that of the artists who keep you laughing every week, except, of course, when they don't, puzzling you with a cartoon that you "don't get" and then you shoot me an email asking me to explain it. Well, you can stop the shooting. You're holding the solution to those cartoon puzzlers in your hands (it's in chapter nine). What else? Oh goodness, self-effacing, humble me has left out the personal part, the essential me-ness part, forged in 1950s Queens New York where I became a wisecracking Jewish kid who mimicked Jerry Lewis, did funny drawings, and turned my mother's Yiddishisms into American humor, leading straight to a career as a successful cartoonist. Nah, that's not the way it happened. You'll need to read the book to find out how it really went down.

Amazon.com Review A Look Inside How About Never--Is Never Good Enough for You? What Lemmings Believe E-Z Pass "Now that's product placement!"

From Booklist Mankoff was close to earning a PhD in psychology when he finally admitted that cartooning was his true calling. He developed his distinctive “dot” style as a vehicle for his heady sense of humor, had his first cartoon published in the New Yorker in 1977, and has been serving as the magazine’s cartoon editor since 1997. In a witty mix of memoir and New Yorker cartoon history exuberantly illustrated with New Yorker cartoons past and present, Mankoff discusses his mother’s complicated influence (“Humor thrives on conflict”), how his psychology background helps him understand what makes cartoons funny or thought-provoking, and why he created the Cartoon Bank, which transformed the profession. He also unveils the magazine’s cartoon selection process under editors William Shawn, Tina Brown, and David Remnick and describes his own rigorous assessment of 1,000 cartoons a week. Other cartoonists describe their working methods, and Mankoff even offers inside information on the New Yorker’s devilishly difficult Cartoon Caption Contest, which the late great movie critic Roger Ebert won in 2011 “after 107 tries.” A cartoon lover’s feast. --Donna Seaman

Review

“Lucid, illuminating, and encouraging.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Fascinating, forthright, and funny . . . Mankoff also writes with first-hand knowledge about the topic of laughter itself. He dares to ask the question, 'What makes something funny?', and answers it with intelligence, originality, and, of course, humor.” ―Roz Chast, cartoonist for The New Yorker

“Mankoff's deep understanding of humor, both its power and its practice, is the live wire that crackles through his new book. . . . How About Never is more than a memoir . . . it's also an enormous window into the mystery and alchemy behind the creation and selection of New Yorker cartoons.” ―The Washington Post

“How About Never is not just a charming memoir but also a charming grab bag of cartoon history, cartoon theory (nothing too woolly), and shop talk.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Is Bob Mankoff mad, a genius, or a mad genius? This book does not answer that question, but you'll love it.” ―Andy Borowitz

“This is a generous book, giving abundant credit to both the older generation of cartoonists whom the young Mr. Mankoff hero worshiped to the new blood he has brought to the magazine during his tenure.” ―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“More than anyone, Bob Mankoff has kept the New Yorker tradition in cartooning alive, while managing to oversee its renewal. He's also a very funny guy, with either a stipple-pen in his hand or a computer keyboard beneath his fingers. And, if that's not enough, he's one of the few funny guys around who actually has something sensible to say about what makes funny funny and he does so here.” ―Adam Gopnik

“Evidence that The New Yorker's cartoons can still unerringly reflect the texture of our times.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“Hilarious . . . A unique look at how the best cartoons in the world are created.” ―Christopher Guest

“Fascinating . . . Mankoff offers a number of tips on the ‘intelligent humor' that makes it into the New Yorker--and even how to better your odds in the weekly caption process . . . Those who aspire to a career drawing for the New Yorker will find this essential reading.” ―Kirkus

“How About Never serves up not only a mini-collection of great cartoons but also a look at the shift in styles through the editorships of legendary William Shawn, Tina Brown, and current editor David Remnick. Mankoff also provides a very funny and insightful look at how to win The New Yorker caption contest. . . A must read for devotees of the magazine.” ―Publishers Weekly

29 of 33 people found the following review helpful. How About Never: How about great cartooning fun from a master? By John Williamson Cartoonist Bob Mankoff has a long and rich history of putting pen to paper and creating images that make readers smile. In fact, the title of this book, How About Never--Is Never Good for You?: My Life in Cartoons has its origin in one of his most celebrated cartoons, one that comes from a famous Mankoff cartoon that illustrates a businessman on the phone, trying to duck out of a lunch appointment. And there on the cover of the book is a self-depiction of the author with a wide grin on his face, complete with a lipstick kiss on his forehead. Get to page 6 within the introduction and you'll see the follow-up image: same "How about never--is never good for you?" quote, but with the black-cloaked Grim Reaper at the door. This is typical wittiness from the author as he approaches his 70th birthdayIt's a splendid start to an excellent book, one that is about half illustrations and half anecdotes. The author explains that he had had submitted a multitude of cartoons to The New Yorker before selling the first one. We learn that he was a freelance cartoonist for the the magazine for twenty years before becoming the cartoon editor... and that was while the previous cartoon editor was still there.Bob Mankoff founded the online Cartoon Bank in the early '90s, which is the agency that sells and licenses the cartoons from The New Yorker. He also edited a number of cartoon compilations, including two personal favorites: The New Yorker Book of Literary Cartoons and The New Yorker Book of Technology Cartoons. His own drawing style is distinctive, as are those of the other New Yorker artists, and to his credit, this book is made up of a good number of their works that are familiar to many of us.Without dropping too many spoilers, about halfway through this book, Mankoff explores his love/hate relationship with computers, and the cartoons and illustrations are plentiful. He had started with a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III in the mid-'80s, then moved on to the original Mac, commenting with his iconic with that using the mouse was "like drawing with a bar of soap."Chapter Fourteen delves heavily into some of the other cartooning talent at the New Yorker, and some of the examples here are among the best of the best. One that is noteworthy is the classic cartoon by Peter Steiner, which went on to be one of the most cited, well known and reprinted in the magazine's history. It pictures one dog at a computer keyboard conversing with a canine friend, and is captioned: "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog."The book is also somewhat of a guide of sorts for would-be cartoonists, offering a broad range of tips about keeping illustrations coherent and to the point, about the difference between funniness that works and doesn't, about how to build on originality. The book also explains how freelance cartoonists might approach the magazine, but keep in mind that the New Yorker has a truly intimidating accept vs. reject ratio. How About Never--Is Never Good for You?: My Life in Cartoons illustrates (and pardon the pun) that Bob Mankoff is a true humorist, and it shows up on almost every page. Longtime readers of the New Yorker will appreciate this one, as it's a humorous and absorbing look at an urbane art form by one of most highly regarded top editors. New readers should appreciate the easy-going style, the background and the cartoons that have become contemporary classics.JW ▪ 3/20/2014

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Great fun By shiny This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Bob Mankoff, the current Cartoon Editor for The New Yorker magazine, has written a delightful, funny memoir of how and why he became a cartoonist. The title is taken from the caption from his most well known New Yorker cartoon, a quip also now found on magnets and occasionally in general conversation, but that idea of "Never" also could apply to the likelihood of getting a cartoon published in one of the few remaining magazines valuing cartoons. This book is not part of well-known series of collected cartoons from The New Yorker Magazine; however, it is an perfect complement to the series. And it would make an excellent gift for anyone who appreciates a New Yorker cartoon or who needs to be introduced to them.Mr. Mankoff humorously zips through the twists of his life and career as a cartoonist, but along the way he also explores what creates the essence of the New Yorker magazine's cartoon, and he does so with a fine sense of humor and great cartoons.Along the way, you find out what the job of being the Cartoon Editor for The New Yorker actually entails, and you discover that cartooning is harder work than we all fantasize. Mr. Mankoff explains the decisions about which cartoons are chosen for publication, demonstrates how that particularly intelligent form of humor at The New Yorker has evolved (due to changing times, humor, and editors), and shows how a mildly funny idea and drawing can be improved into a cartoon contender for the New Yorker. As a bonus, Mr. Mankoff does a great job of teaching you how to win the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest (or at least how to approach the challenge and to improve your chances).Mr. Mankoff writes with ease and pleasant wit making the book a very enjoyable read. The many, many included New Yorker cartoons are well integrated into the text. The author includes many of his own cartoons, as well as cartoons by other well-known cartoonists and a few newer talents. The cartoon selection would be a delightful read on their own, but they have been carefully chosen as examples to support his insights about humor and the differences between cartoonists' styles and humor.I found myself nodding, chuckling, and laughing out loud all the way through this fine memoir that is also a clear and funny exploration of the subtleties of humor and cartoons.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. "The New Yorker was and is the Everest of magazine cartooning." By E. Bukowsky Some cartoons published in The New Yorker may puzzle those who do not get the artists' offbeat humor and obscure allusions. On the whole, however, loyal fans enjoy the whimsical drawings and captions that have long been a distinctive feature of this iconic publication. New Yorker cartoons stand out because of their amusing sight gags, puns, topical political references, and/or mockery of contemporary mores. A few of the cartoonists' favorite targets are yuppies, the arrogant rich, stuffy businessmen, married couples, and deceased men and women trying to gain admission to heaven.Who decides what is funny and "New Yorkerish" enough to make the cut? One of the gatekeepers is Bronx-born Bob Mankoff, the magazine's cartoon editor since 1997. In his memoir, "How about Never? Is Never Good for You?" Mankoff provides an overview of his childhood, early influences, education, and career. In addition, he analyzes what goes into creating cartoons that will appeal to The New Yorker's audience. Finally, he tips his hat to the up-and-coming artists who, he hopes, will carry the torch for the foreseeable future.Bob Mankoff is a self-proclaimed smart aleck who, like so many others aspiring cartoonists, papered his walls with rejection slips until he finally made the grade. Mankoff entertainingly talks about such creative geniuses as Sam Gross and the inimitable Roz Chast, and explains how and why he developed his "stippling" style. In addition, he points out that The New Yorker's standards and traditions have changed according to who has been at the helm. When Tina Brown was chief, she opened the door to risqué themes that her predecessor, William Shawn, would have firmly rejected. Now that David Remnick is the editor, the pendulum has swung more to the center. No cartoon makes the weekly issue unless Remnick deems it funny, well-drawn, and in good taste. "How about Never?" is fun, chatty, and provides an insider's look at how the cartoon editor and his staff whittle down the more than five hundred submissions they receive weekly to a final few. Mankoff, who created "the world's first computerized cartoon database," known as the Cartoon Bank, showcases the work of a variety of talented people in the pages of this book. (My favorite is a cartoon drawn by Danny Shanahan, featuring the collie and former television star, Lassie.) "How about Never?" is a must-read for aficionados of an art form that, if Mankoff and his crew have anything to say about it, will continue to entertain and pique the interest of readers for many years to come.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Priceless information. By truncheon1 While it is true that this book is a wonderful resource for parents to use in order to speak to their teens, it is my opinion that it is so much more than that. It is an invaluable tool for any number of relationship models. The rules and self evaluation methods presented in this book are fundamentally nessicary to having honest and useful conversations with any and all loved ones. Dr. Rayne does a brilliant job of taking a potentially endless and overwhelming topic and making it easily digestible so one might be able to begin utilizing the information right away. She also reassured the reader and instills a level of confidence that is almost impossible to offer through literature. Her tone is gentle and the read is quick. This is a book that every adult should not only read, but should own in order to be able to access it over and over again. Absolutely amazing work.

Dr. Rayne has put together a great methodology for talking to our children about a topic that most of us approach with trepidation, if not downright fear. After all, many of us didn't have parents modeling similar conversations with us when we were young!Rayne walks us through our own preparation, how to listen (REALLY listen), how to ask that one question without judgment or condemnation, and how to not panic when the big tough questions arise. More importantly, she coaches parents how to keep avenues of communication open through-out the challenging adolescent years.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This might be the best sex ed book ever. By Penny Thoughtful This is a book about how to talk to your teenager about sex. In a way, it's a book about how to shut up and listen so your teenager will talk to you about sex. It's a book about how to work through your own experiences and emotions and beliefs and feelings about sex so you can listen so your teenager will be able to work through his or her own experiences and emotions and beliefs and feelings about sex. It's a book about how to have a good enough relationship with your child that your child will see you as a positive influence when making life decisions. Why is sex ed important? Because good sex ed prevents (in alphabetical order) abortion, rape, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy, and even a certain amount of unnecessary heartbreak. And although sex ed classes, whether in school or from an outside teacher like Dr. Rayne, are important, NO ONE is as important to a child's sense of self, and grounding in values, as his or her own parents. So if you have ANY vested interest in these social issues, please don't underestimate the value of sex ed. It's REALLY valuable! This book is aimed at all parents, regardless of political, religious, or socioeconomic background. No matter your starting point, this book will help you get into a space to have a healthier relationship with your son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild, friend's child, team member, etc. and that is worth the purchase price of the book many times over.

A familiar place, a supernatural conflict—it could happen anywhere.

Two years after the most devastating loss of his life, Jones O'Brian has barely recovered when a series of fires, accompanied by peculiar noises, signal that something dark and unsettling is encroaching on his community. Sheriff Bob Cable, once Jones' high school football coach, asks for his help investigating the occurrences. Working with Cable and Deputy Abby Solomon, the woman who shared his loss, Jones discovers people have disappeared, properties and businesses have quietly changed hands and strange newcomers have moved to his southern Illinois hometown. With warrior angel Arrow in Jones' corner, bridging the divide between unseen and seen realms, Jones revisits the terrain of his childhood to uncover an evil battle plan to take over the region—and beyond. It seems that in this world, what we can't see can be more awesome—and more terrifying—than what we can see.

Thought provoking By PhillipCole Two years after his wife dies from an unexplained illness, Jones O'Brian realizes something evil is happening in his town. Helped by his friends and an army of angels, he works to fight its advance and save the town and people. Don C. Gladden tells the story in Jones' Corner.Having rooted his life in faith, Jones is able to trust in God for help when trouble hits. That doesn't mean everything goes as expected, but he knows that God is sovereign and will prevail. This, and seeing prayers answered, deepens his trust.Gladden has written a book that does more than provide a good story. He brings to the forefront an issue that we often try to avoid: spiritual warfare. Though there are people causing trouble, they are not the source of the conflict. Jones and his friends are facing spiritual adversaries, just as we do. Even tough this is a fictional story, it reminds us that we, too, battle against powers and principalities.I liked the story, though I think it could be made longer. This isn't really anything against the book or plot, I just think that it would be nice to go a bit deeper in the concept of spiritual warfare. That, and don't like it when books I enjoy end.I received a free copy of Jones' Corner in exchange for my review as part of the BookCrash program.

Dianne Grotius Berry (CookieZeal) Since paranormal/action adventure genre is not my forte, this book was a slow rouser for me. There were so many characters that initially seemed to topple over one another. Just when I was being introduced to the main cast, out jumped more players from here and there. But as I kept reading, nearly each one developed and so did IThe storyline's plot is held captive by eerie evil antagonists whose ploy was to manifest fear and panic using destructive pranks while also stirring up strife within a small community. A county's sheriff and some law officers, with the guidance of heavenly angels, team up as the avengers who are determined to physically and spiritually stop the demons who eventually succumb to their victorious opponents. But not without a fierce and destroying fight.Author Don Gladden's personal media background comes into play with his clever move-by-move action scenes as he rolls the camera up close to the "misty faces" of the demons for the reader audience. Some good imagery there!I was impressed with his detailed descriptive of various weapons and defence strategies used which challenged my knowledge base. The author has an acute command of language. Character dialogue was some of the best ... tight, articulate and refined, although the author had opportunities to heighten emotions in certain scenes, such as when central character Jones' wife is dying. I would have liked to have felt the grief a little deeper instead of reading a few more chapters dousing me back into much detail that I could hardly keep up with. Several other places in the story could have been intensified to increase personal attachment to the host of characters.I admit that it wasn’t until the last part of the book where I was nearly in tears because of the faith element. The final action scenes were gripping as prayer, the supreme ammunition for life's battle, brought the warmth and vision. As a Christian who understands spiritual warfare, Gladden illustrates a divine bond that extends through the revelation of life and death-- victory and defeat. Results were transparent to the loving Creator and Savior. It is a touching, intimate picture. In summary, with all the sharp detail, there was an extreme amount of action that would render a more favorable screenplay in my opinion. I thank and congratulate a fellow author for his scholarly a51pproach and creative accomplishment! I'm very glad I read it

The plot and characters held my attention and I couldn't wait to read more and see how the story would unfold. I love that the author tackled the subject of spiritual warfare - showing us how what happens in the unseen spiritual dimension can and does impact what happens in our earthly dimension. I believe "Jones' Corner" would make a great movie and I cannot wait to read the sequel!

Entertaining Series -- Though It Has Its Problems By Wendell Short Version: A collection of fairly self-contained stories with an overarching plot that attempts to tie them all together. Some of the stories were good; some were bad. Overall, I liked The Multiversity, but the main story was a bit bizarre and a tad confusing — in other words, typical Grant Morrison.Long Version: Yet another ambitious DCU story focusing on the destruction of the Multiverse. This time the apocalypse is being orchestrated by a group of uber villains dubbed “The Gentry.” These guys’ devious plot is to insert a cursed comic book into every world, thereby causing a chain reaction which will ultimately lead to the total devastation of worlds!Naturally, when reality begins to unravel, the various heroes of all the different multiverse earths have to uncover what is causing the problems, unite in some way, and fight to keep everything from being destroyed in a Final Crisis! (Uh, didn’t Morrison already write about a Final Crisis? Okay. Guess this is another one.) Brawl-fests ensue thereafter.Like people who read my reviews know, I’m one of those on the fence about Grant Morrison. Honestly, I’ll read one story and be blown away by his mind-warping plot lines, but then I’ll read another and think it is a load of shite, which he has made obtuse and overly complex merely to hide its overall stench. And The Multiversity didn’t really change my view of Morrison in the least. Most of the issues in this series are decent, if not spectacular. The Multiversity #1 and #2 are the usual big event type stories with pages and pages of superheroes fighting villains. In between these bookend issues, there are one-shots stories; each set in a different world with a different set of heroes. In one, Morrison and Frank Quitely channeled their twenty-first century Watchmen, producing the highly anticipated ‘Pax Americana.’ In another the focus is on a world where crime has been eliminated and a celebrity culture of superheroes has grown up. The Society of Super-Heroes goes all retro in one issue; Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew make an appearance; and there is even a Guidebook filled with details about the multiverse worlds. The only issue which really struck a nerve with me was the Grant Morrison-Jim Lee ‘Mastermen.’ Here Morrison tackles the question of “What if Superman had crashed in Nazi Germany and been raised by Hitler?” Naturally, Supes (now known as Overman) wins World War II for Hitler and eventually becomes the next Fuhrer of a Third Reich which rules the world. Only Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters still resist the Overman’s enlightened but totalitarian rule. Pretty straight forward but had some real strength to it.Now to be fair, there are much smarter comic reviewers out there saying the whole set up in The Multiversity has a deeper meaning. Its complexity meant to express a more important message. Specifically, Morrison is setting The Gentry up as the representative of intellectuals who are ruining comics and the character Nix Uotan as the adult bloggers/critics who are destroying the magical mayhem of comics by always seeking to make it more adult oriented and logical. I didn’t try to read that into the story, but it might be there, and perhaps it will make the series more meaningful to some of you. As for me, I’m reading to be entertained, not enlightened, so the whole “deeper meaning” stuff didn’t make me like this series any more or any less. The one thing I can rave about is the art. Each comic is drawn by a different artist, and every one of them does an excellent job. Ivan Reis, Chris Sprouse, Ben Oliver, Frank Quitely, Cameron Stewart, Marcus To, Jim Lee, and Doug Mahnke to name just a few. Each bringing their A game to The Multiversity, making it a real joy to keep turning the pages. So should you buy this collection? If you’re a Morrison fan, you don’t even need to ask the question, because you will undoubtedly love The Multiversity. If your not a Morrison fan, then don’t expect to have anything here change your feelings about his work. And if you’re on the fence about all this, what do you have to lose? Nothing. So pick this one up and dive in, because you might love one of the stories.

An Experimental Tour Through the DC Multiverse By David Swan Multiversity is another experimental comic series from Grant Morrison similar to what he did with Seven Soldiers of Victory. In the case of Seven Soldiers he produced seven four issue limited series that were loosely tied together with a common foe. Morrison offered these series as launching pads for DC to run with but none of them actually became continuing series as far as I know. From an artistic standpoint I would say Seven Soldiers was a success although I felt the ending didn’t live up to the buildup. The structure of Multiversity is different in that the seven storylines are all but a single issue long with two framing issues bookending the series. There are ups and downs in Multiversity but overall I consider it a great success. I would rank Pax Americana and Thunderworld Adventures as some of the greatest single issues I have ever read. Seriously. As an experiment in storytelling I found Ultra Comics absolutely riveting and Masterman was a bold stroke featuring a Nazi version of the Justice League. DC has experimented with alternate versions of heroes and villains for years but Morrison really gets creative and fun. I loved how he would tweak established characters or mix two characters into one. Anyone can modify an established character but Morrison does it as good as just about any writer and better than most. It doesn’t hurt that Morrison has some of the absolute best comic artists ever putting his thoughts into images. Multiversity also contains a lot of metaphysical storytelling which is nothing new for Morrison but in Multiversity he takes it to the extreme. When a character mentions Sandman another might ask if it’s a reference to Neil Gaimon’s Sandman. It’s in Ultra Comics where Morrison pulls out all the stops and attempts to put the reader INTO the comic as literally as he possibly can. It gets pretty trippy in a good way.So where does Multiversity fall short. For starters a lot of the single issues stories end on cliffhangers with no likely chance at a resolution. Mastermen builds to a conflict between the Nazi Justice League and the Freedom Fighters and just as the battle begins the story ends. ‘The Just’ and ‘The Society of Super-Heroes’ likewise end on cliffhangers. If the stories weren’t that great I might not care but I really want to know what happens. I had hoped that Multiversity would tie everything together in the final framing issue but it doesn’t.The two framing stories are, in my opinion, the weakest part of Multiversity. The have very little tying them to the seven single issues and are little more than a jumble of images and dialogue. I’ve read both issues at least three times and I couldn’t really say what happens. I did enjoy when they visited the Marvel Universe (obviously they had to change all the characters for copyright reasons but it’s pretty obvious who they are). Despite some issues there is enough awesomeness to earn my full five stars and as one commenter pointed out Morrison is planning on a follow up series in 2016 called Multiversity Too.

I've always found his base-level understanding of the comic medium astonishing, and have honestly never left a work of his confused. I've come away with a whole hell of a lot to think about, and have spent active thinking time sorting through his material outside of the singular act of the initial reading, but I've never felt burned by the grandiosity of his highly cerebral work. To each his own, and I know that a lot of comic readers walk away from a Morrison book frustrated and confused, and to them, I say stay the heck away from Multiversity. This book is not for you, and it is not the thing that will convert you. It is not a must-read for everyone, and you will be none the lesser for skipping it. To the other camp, that of the Morrison faithful, I whole-heartedly urge you you to read Multiversity and embrace it as the DC Bible. The grace and love with which this work has been crafted is apparent from the first page. Every artist on board hits a home run, re-imagining the tropes and designs of each and every DC icon, while meeting Morrison's demanding, dream-like script head-on, with brilliant design and panel-work. Multiversity is not plot-centric, nor is is character driven. In that way, it would e easy to rush off as a failure. But Multiversity thrives as something exceptionally larger than either of those two familiar narrative builds. Multiversity serves as the creation-myth, Bible, genesis and exodus of the DC multiverse. The detail is paid to the hourglass which contains each painfully notioned of the 52 DC universes. Every Earth, and each hero that comes within it, is laid out bare on the pages of the guidebook, and the other comics, which are read as maps and warnings by each of the other world's inhabitants. The single issues themselves each serve as a brilliant love-letter to some aspect of DC's history. From a bright eyed Captain Marvel, to the drear of a Watchmen styled landscape, or a Red Son inspired Nazi Superman, to a pulpy LoEG adventure, we explore a series of brilliant elseworlds, on our way through the meta-cosmic material which makes up the worlds in which we wish we lived.Truly, it's something that must be read to be understood. Some of the core ideas behind Seven Soldiers get bigger in the pages of Multiversity. I don't know that it's Morrison's greatest work, or his opus, but it IS the new holy text of the DC universe.
