A Superior Court Judge with a passion for social justice as well as the law strives to discover the truth behind the mystery of a robbery-murder in a small California town in 1939. When the Judge hears testimony against a 14-year-old teenager, he realizes that the boy participated in a robbery-murder. However, the accused did not actually pull the trigger. But unless the boy identifies his partner, the Judge must sentence him as a murderer, which would result in prolonged jail time. The Judge’s investigator, along with the precocious 16-year-old girl who identified the boy as one of the thieves, explore different approaches to uncover the murderer. In the backdrop of escalating war in Europe, the financial scarcities of the Great Depression, and the Judge’s caseload, their attempts to find justice for the accused boy and unmask the killer lure the Judge and his friends into sordid criminal activities.

She had agreed to testify against a fourteen year old schoolmate for theft and murder"Using actual cases as inspiration, author of The Judges Story, Joyce T.Strand, writes characters around real people. The judge in this story, Judge Akers, is one of those type of judges that we need now, honest, fair, and looking out for children. The story takes place in the 1930's California. Judge Akers had been a practicing lawyer before becoming a judge. He is widowed and is very involved in a boys club, loves cars and listening to music.Clara, a teenaged schoolgirl with a passion for writing, testifies in a trial of a 14 year old boy accused of murder in the robbery of a store where the store owner, Mr.Brant was killed, even though he never pulled the trigger but is still culpable in his involvement. Mr.Brant left behind a wife and children who will now be struggling just to survive. Clara becomes Oscars advocate as she learns more about him and his circumstances.Oscar Briarly is the boy on trial. Oscar's mother is a drunk, his older brother Tommy is in prison, the father is really a piece of work and the younger brother Frankie has diminished mental capabilities. Oscar has a thirst for knowledge that is remarkable coming from the background he does.Judge Akers enlists the aid of Clara to try to talk to Oscar in jail to find out who the actual shooter was in the death of Mr.Brant. Once Clara finds out that Oscar would love to read, she starts teaching him while getting to know him and to see if he will tell her who did the shooting. Oscar "is no snitch" so the information that the police and judge want is not going to happen unless Clara can use her persuasive skills to get the information needed. At the same time there is a string of robberies going on being done by young school boys. These boys are working for someone and it is up to the police to find out who is the ringleader. Judge Akers, Clara and an investigator, Jim, work together to get the culprits. So in an unusual precedence, Judge Akers delays the sentencing of Oscar as long as he can while the investigation goes on.I was impressed with this story and the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck came to mind probably because of the era, people not able to find work or unable to take care of their families so the young boys are forced to get work where they can and it is usually illegal activities. I found the characters to be engaging, especially Clara and even Oscar. Clara, a young lady who has a passion and skill for writing and Oscar and his thirst for knowledge. In my minds eye, in a continuation of the story, I can see these two becoming great friends, of course after whatever punishment that Oscar may receive due to his part in the robbery and murder.I enjoyed the author's style of writing, short chapters, enough information about the story and without being boring or having long drawn out characterizations. This is the first book I have read by Joyce Strand events to weave a story that should appeal to everyone.I received a copy of the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for said review.

Harrowing and True By ReadingOtherPeople Having already written two growing book series’, author Joyce Strand deftly tries her hand in the historical mystery genre with “The Judge’s Story.” Full of characteristic “Strand-isms,” “The Judge’s Story” uses layers of intrigue, tumult, and deep-seated racism in a small Californian town in 1939.At the cusp of the Second World War, the climate of “The Judge’s Story” is rife with tension and a sense of dangerous foreboding. The book’s stoic protagonist, the titular ‘Judge’ is faced with yet another violent case to preside over. The case itself is standard enough: a boy is involved in a robbery that ends in bloodshed. However, the Judge soon discovers that the boy, while indeed involved in the fatalistic events ultimately resulting in the loss of a life, is not being completely forthright. His involvement is not so one sided. Seeing this, the Judge attempts to bring justice to the accused boy whilst maintaining his position as a neutral purveyor of justice. With the help of supporting characters that assist The Judge in his quest for judicature, Strand has created yet another novel with inherent momentum and relevant subject matter. Inspired by the unpublished memoir of a real California Superior Court Judge, the book arises above your typical legal thriller. Strand takes the time needed to flesh out her characters to make them believable and realistic. The plot itself is succinct and fresh, and does not fall victim to melodrama or the genre’s formulaic tendencies. An indicator of what defines a ‘good book’ is originality and hope, two components that drive “The Judge” forward as both an entertaining read but also as a commentary on the justice system itself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read which will touch the hearts of everyone who reads it. By beckvalleybooks The author has read the casenotes of a 1930 judge and created an excellent novel. Mark Twain meets Harper Lee is the best way to describe the authors writing and storyline in this book. An excellent read which will touch the hearts of everyone who reads it.It will make you think about how you treat and make decisions about the people you come into contact with. She uses the judge thoughts to remind us that not everyone has been taught right from wrong by their peers and follow the only way they know. The novel also tries to show us with the right treatment and lessons and someone to believe in them people can be put on the right path and atone for previous misdemeanours. In times of the papers reporting bad news this book is a timely reminder that if time is given to help people the problems for the future can be solved. A book that will and can inspire you to do more and will have a positive impact on your life.

The troubles and sorrows of Linda Tressel, who is the heroine of the little story now about to be told, arose from the too rigid virtue of her nearest and most loving friend,—as troubles will sometimes come from rigid virtue when rigid virtue is not accompanied by sound sense, and especially when it knows little or nothing of the softness of mercy.

Veal Appearing anonymously as "By the Author of Nina Balatka", "Linda Tressel" was the second and last installment in Anthony Trollope's attempt to establish an alternative literary persona that could deviate from the Trollopian staples (not that the deviation was very startling; maidens urged to marry men whom they don't love are not exactly an unknown subject to our author).Like the earlier book, "Linda" takes place in a foreign city that the author had recently visited, in this case Nuremberg, and deals with the effect of religious bigotry on love and marriage. This time, instead of violently opposing a union, the bigoted aunt is trying to promote one, and the heroine struggles to escape into either spinsterhood or the arms of a more acceptable lover than the middle-aged boor who has been picked out for her.The personae of "Linda Tressel" - all odd ducks except for Linda herself - belong to comedy, and a work in that vein might have succeeded. Trollope chose, however, to write a tale that becomes progressively grimmer, eventually toppling the lightweight characters. The book was not a total failure. It drew praise from Henry James (who guessed the author's identity from stylistic clues) and has both lively and pathetic moments. On the whole, though, one does not, after putting it down, feel deep regret that the "alternative Trollope" had no further literary career.

I could see where this book might have appealed to a Victorian audience; as a modern reader, I found it tough going, though not as much so as much "Alice Dugdale" - a real yawner. The supporting characters carry the story pretty much, but I could've used a bit more mouth-foaming zealotry from the aunt to jazz it up even more.

This book is designed to help us look deeply into the sanctification process, particularly for those who have been in bondage to substances and behaviors that have shadowed them for many years. It will unveil what are often hidden causes for an inability to find freedom from chronic sin patterns. While perfect holiness in our thoughts and actions may be unobtainable in this life, it is most certainly more obtainable than we can even imagine. This book is for those who want to go all the way with God, who truly want to be His disciple.

Do you want to find a great husband and have a long, happy marriage? Here's the problem: you're not married, but you want to be. You're doing everything right. You're the perfect girlfriend. You've mastered the whole "lady on the streets, freak in the sheets" thing. You've mastered every sexual position in the Kama Sutra. You've dieted yourself to perfection, or at least as close to perfection as you're going to get. You wear all the right clothes. You are doing everything right. You're an amazing person, and you know you'd make a great wife. But why can't men see that? Why aren't they jumping to propose to you? The answer is simple. It's not your fault. Now it's time for us to change all of that. It's time to reclaim our power and take control of our destinies. Finding Love & Commitment in the Culture of Self-Gratification will help you to find a happy and healthy relationship without compromising yourself. You can take control of your romantic future with Zofie's three step plan to love and commitment. In this book you will learn:

After sharing my concerns with a recently married friend she recommended this book and after reading through it i can see why!I didn't realize it, but I had been taking some bad advice most of my life that was sabotaging my chances of finding a boyfriend who was husband material without even realizing it. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a great book. It is not an in depth look ... By Free-Bird Reviews This is a great book. It is not an in depth look at how to fix your relationship but it is concise and poignant and has a lot of helpful tips.Being a Psychology and Behavioral Science major I am very interested in how people act and react. It is not only that though, it's the fact that we have a relationship, of a sort, with every person we meet. Even the people down at Subway that we just order our lunch from weekly. These types of concepts can be taken and used not only for those relationships, but more importantly, with the relationships that you want to keep for the rest of your life.Full disclosure: I love my husband. He's a pain sometimes but he is my husband and we are trying to make things work. We just got through an extremely tough two years but lately I have still been feeling down. As I said above, I'm a Psychology major, I should know how to fix this, but I can only work on myself. If my hubby does not want to do something, then that is up to him. This book has some easy to use techniques to help bring communication to the forefront and to help you and your partner know how you feel without all the mess. The one thing I really like is the three questions. What you HAVE to have in your relationship What you would LIKE to have. What you would hate. The make/break things. This is so succinct! Everyone can answer those questions. My hubby was even able to answer the last one and he never, ever complains. I was able to discuss with him the things that I felt I MUST have and the things that I can probably chill out about but would still like to have. These three things made our communication fabulous. We were already communicating pretty well, we do have 14 years practice, but sometimes our egos get in the way. These three bullet points helped to narrow down the most important struggles that we have daily. AND helped my hubby explain what he hates. What I love about this book is that it is real. Michael discusses the chemicals that we all have when relationships start and what to do when those very same chemicals that make you feel like you're in love, start to wane, and then you wonder what in the world you were thinking! He peppers advice with psychological research and anecdotes that anyone can related to. "Understand the reality that it's extremely difficult to change another person, unless they really want to change for themselves." "Compatibility is not just about whether you have the same favorite sort or food, but what you each uniquely want and need from a relationship, and how that plays out in the dynamics of your interactions."There is an app that is included for free with the book, however, since this was just published I was not able to play with the app. I plan to use it when it is approved and come back to update the review. For now, I think this is a great, and positive way, to get people talking in a manner which encourages trust.Received by publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to learn how to create a healthier relationship so I was excited to find this book. Some of the book seemed a bit dry but I really enjoyed and appreciated the real life examples/experiences. Overall, a fairly quick and informative read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You might want to go with the paperback version of this book. By Circumspect 4 This book makes a lot of references to the author's website and the app that can be just along with the reading of the book. I really liked the idea of a relationship book having an app to go along with it. I was very intrigued by that but the app wasn't available when I read the book, and still isn't available for Android. The author clearly states that you don't have to use the app with the book, but I wonder if it would have beneficial to me when reading this book. There's a lot of good quality information in this book especially the Balanced Relationship Guidelines at the end of each chapter. For me, I felt the worksheets in the back should have been incorporated at the end of each chapter that they are relevant, especially when reading this as an ebook. Appendix 4 should definitely be in the first few chapters of the book so you are thinking about them as you are reading the book, especially the Your Gotta Haves, Like to Haves, or Gotta Not Haves since they are the main formula that form the book.I felt that this book had a lot of good information in it but it just wan't put together in a cohesive manner and I found myself having to go back and forth to reread material to follow along. Now I realize that I am by no means a writer or editor, but a book reviewer and this is simply my opinion. But, I have probably read over 20 relationship books with all types of authors: those with television shows, those with game shows, to those with PhD's. So I just wanted to give you my opinions on the book. Ultimately, I didn't feel that I received enough information with the book alone to help me in my relationship issue.I received this book in exchange for an honest review. My review is based upon my personal experiences of reading the book and are my opinions alone.

Heartwarming & Real By Brenda Cobb Murphy I found this book to be honest and poignant, while at the same time the author handles this sensitive and painful story with insight and humor. This book must have been terribly painful to write and yet it’s a beautiful story of a healing journey back to wholeness. It’s a picture of learning to let go of the guilt from the “what if’s” and to move past the sorrow of giving up a baby for adoption. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been on either end of an adoption, someone who has struggled to find their way through bad choices, or who is interested in reading a wonderful, humorous, and triumphant story of a girl determined to survive in spite of herself. This book met all my expectations and more.

It is a story about difficult decisions, poor choices, and how faith led to a miraculous turnaround. There were some editing errors, but the one thing that seemed to be lacking for me was true emotion. It was detailed, but somehow I couldn't feel any real emotion in this Memoir. I do admire Ms. Miah's courageous decision about her first child and am truly happy she found the love of her life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. beautiful By Audrey Worrell This is a beautiful story of a young woman who was lost, but never gave up. Her story is still not over, but it is a wonderful read of where she came from to where she is now. It is encouraging and inspiring for many women, and it is an easy read. It will make you want to laugh with her and cry with her and realize that everything happens for a reason!

By Deborah J Christiansen Amber shares her stories of motherhood – the good, the bad and the funny – and in such a witty way.I love that she is real – she doesn’t sugar coat and reading this book is like a breath of fresh air. I have SUCH a hard time reading mommy blogs that leave me feeling deflated and no good. I have five kids and we don’t always look like we stepped out of a GAP commercial. We pretty much never do. I love reading a book about motherhood that shares the good, but the bad days too. There ARE bad days. And I am not a perfect mom. Amber shares her real life with a twist of humor. Let’s face it, the least we can do is laugh at ourselves and our crazy days, right? I wish we could have each others backs more often – moms – and women, instead of tearing each other down. Amber’s book has your back. She is one that builds you up and says, “it’s okay – we are all in this together” I just felt like she was someone I could relate too on so many levels.I really enjoyed this fun book. It was light hearted, but fun loving at the same time. It showed good and bad and had a spiritual uplifting side that I didn’t expect too. I felt like I was sitting down and visiting with one of my best friends about our crazy families. I came away from reading it (both times) feeling better about motherhood and my role as a mom. After reading this book I felt like I had other moms out there just like me!And I really appreciate Amber for the ability to keep it real, not condescending, and uplifting at the same time. It has a great balance!Thoroughly entertaining! I’ve already re-read it, and probably will do so again too!

Memoirs of Mayhem By My Own Little Corner You know when you meet a fellow mom at the playground or a birthday party and you sit and exchange stories of parenthood? That's this book in a nutshell. Her stories of life with four boys made me laugh, cringe, and want to hug her. It's always reassuring to see that your life isn't the only one that feels like utter chaos. One thing that really stood out to me is Amber's love and respect for her husband Nick. Even when she was talking about the things that annoy her she did so with love, charity, and understanding. That's something that is sorely lacking in the world of marriage today, so I applaud her for noticing her contribution, her husband's lack of mind reading ability, and that it takes two people to make a marriage work. It stood out to me that there were things she admitted were silly that she does instead of justifying them, like giving her husband the silent treatment. I think we're all guilty of that from time to time. While majority of the book is laugh-out-loud funny and completely relateable, there were a few moments that had me teary eyed like the story about Quinn and soccer. I was a ridiculous blubbering mess. This was a great read and I really felt like I was just hanging out with Amber and chatting over a cup of spiced chai.*Reviewed by Amanda for My Own Little Corner. I was given a free paperback in exchange for my honest opinion.

"Parenthood makes me feel like I know absolutely nothing about anything and rubs that fact in my face daily."Amber Christensen hit the nail on the head. Before I became a Mom, I too thought this would be easy. Wow was I wrong, and this little boy of mine shows me how little I know about real life every day. I loved reading through these hilarious chapters. Hilarious, and absolutely relatable. I enjoy Amber Christensen's writing style for the way she draws you in and makes you really get it. The chapter on Mom guilt was especially meaningful because I did not expect creating and cultivating another life form to come with so much guilt baggage! Check it out if you're looking for a relatable read and someone to commiserate with on this parenting journey.

In just a few pages, it managed to capture and hold my attention making me want to read the first issue. I recommend this to anyone who likes comics or the alien franchise, but most of all people who have never read a comic and are interested.

In the year 2026, a young man by the name of Kazuto Kirigaya beat Sword Art Online, a VRMMORPG that had become a death trap for its players. He would go on to participate in experimental tests of an entirely new full-dive machine. Meanwhile in 2047, a boy named Haruyuki accelerates himself in order to finish his homework just before class. But in the Accelerated World, he detects a strange tremor. Checking the matching list, he notices a most un-Burst-Linker-like name: "Kirito." It's Kirito vs. Silver Crow as two of author Reki Kawahara's protagonists clash across time and space--and that's just the beginning!

Excellent SAO Crossover By Matthew Richard Kirkum This review is from the point of an SAO fan, as I haven't had a chance to start Accel World yet, though I have heard great things. Saw this on here and then found the manga in my local B&N, and immediately picked it up. This review is only for one half of the book, the part that covers the SAO and Accel World crossover. Now, I'm fairly ignorant to all things Accel World for the moment, so the part that led up to Kirito and Silver Crow meeting from Silver Crow's perspective was kinda confusing, but it didn't detract from the story. I actually really, really liked the explanation behind how the crossover came to be, and the implications behind it (basically a supercomputer, fourth generation diving machine that has the potential to sometimes run parallel with other worlds/timelines (such as the near-ish future, in this case) while diving. Also, while set (I believe) between season 1 and 2 of the anime, or just after season 2 (I use the anime because I'm not sure what manga volumes these would correspond to), I really love the explanation of why Kirito is able to don his SAO attire and swords once more. The fight between Kirito and Silver Crow was extremely enjoyable, and had plenty moments of pure badass-ness. What led up to the fight is rather interesting (not being able to directly communicate because of being from different timelines and using different technologies), and the tension between the fighters before the first blow adds a great sense of "oh man this is gonna be good."*MILD SPOILERS AHEAD*One thing I really liked about the fight scene was that, while very technically it ended in a tie (Kirito's connection cuts out before the final blow), Silver Crow later states that if the connection hadn't cut out, then Kirito would have won the duel. Kirito later tells Suguha that he hopes to be able to duel Silver Crow again someday, leading me to believe there will hopefully be other crossovers in the future. The crossover portion of this volume of the manga is exactly half of the book, and I give that half a 10/10.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beginning is stupid, but I like what comes next. By Kimberly Rice "Versus" was dumb. It used the most outlandish logic possible to get Kirito to fight Silver Crow, ending in an annoyingly predictable tie. However, I liked the next chapter, which could be considered a prologue to the Twilight Marauder arc. Unlike the novel, this gave the reader a reason to believe that Chiyuri would have the ability to install Brain Burst. But the preview of the next volume at the end kinda confused me. I mean, no matter how you look at it, the last few chapters of this volume were building up to Twilight Marauder and Flight Toward a Blue Sky, but according to that preview, volume 6 of this series will be adapting the events of the yet-to-be-released fifth novel. And there's no way to do TM and FTaBS in less than one volume. so what's the deal? Oh well, I guess I'll find out in January.

A Monster Sized Collection of Marvel's 1970's Frankenstein By Stephen Vincent Kempton This Monster Sized Collection runs 536 pages and collects all the Frankenstein stories from Marvel Comics including his solo comic which lasted 18 issues , his 9 stories from the Black & White Monster Magazines plus the appearance in GiantSize Werewolf #2 and Marvel Team-Up #36 and #37. Format wise this looks exactly like one on Marvel's Epic Collections. It has quality color printing on good pulpy paper stock with thick cardboard covers. It even has the extras in the back like Ploog pencils and Magazine painted covers. I don't know exactly why it isn't an Epic Collection, but it could have been quite easily.Art wise this volume features some excellent work from Mike Ploog, John Buscema and Val Mayerick. The writing quality features some of Gary Friedrich best work, followed by some mixed quality from Doug Moench and others. In the early 1970's Roy Thomas became Editor In Chief and introduced a bunch of new comics for Marvel including the launch of a bunch of Monster/Supernatural books. Roy claims he was adapting Dracula with Dick Giordano and wanted to adapt Frankenstein with Michael Ploog. But with a lack of time he handed it over to Gary Friedrich. Friedrich's writing here is some of the best of his career and teamed with the art of Mike Ploog they had great success. The first issue is cover dated January 1972 but it was on sale in late 1971. Friedrich starts the story in 1898 with descendent of the Captain who first discovers the Monster in Shelley's novel Robert Walton the 4th . The first four issues then flash back and forth for the origin of the Monster. This story is a combination of Shelley's Novel , the Classic Universal Films and Gary Friedrich own contributions. It all works pretty good and we get a Monster with intelligence and speach but with an occasional blood thirsty rage. These first four issues are excellent.Issues #5 and #6 are solo stories by Friedrich and Ploog and also equally enjoyable. In the first story the Frankenstein Monster saves a beautiful woman and encounters some werewolves. In the second story a search for The Last Frankenstein leads to an encounter with a Giant Spider. Issue #5 still has the logo of The Monster Of Frankenstein on the cover while #6 it is changed to The Frankenstein Monster.Big John Buscema steps in for the next four issue saga which is a clash with Vampires and specifically Dracula. Maybe a slight down tic but still quality work.Frankenstein #11 is Gary Friedrich's last issue and illustrated by Bob Brown. It seems like a rush job as we meet Victor Frankenstein the last Frankenstein. This almost seems a running gag. With issue #12 Doug Moench takes over with the purpose of changing the Status Quo. First he turns the Monster into the lumbering mentally challenged Creature and secondly he returns the stories to our then current era ( the 70's).After issue #12 we get the nine Black and White stories . In the Frankenstein Essential they are included in the back of the book. Putting them here is an attempt to put them in chronological order of the Monster's Timeline. Some of these stories you must remember appeared at the same time as early issues but they happened in the current Marvel Timeline while the color stories had all been set in the past. The first three are the work of Gary Friedrich and John Buscema. While the remainder are by Doug Moench and Val Mayerick. The Mayerick art resembles Bernie Wrightson. The first seven stories form one long jumbled arc which starts in a circus and features multiple Brain Transplants between the Monster , a Trapeze artist and a mouse. At one point the Monster picks up an unconscious girl and carries here around for a couple of adventures believing she is his girlfriend. Then at some point she regains consciousness and runs away screaming. The final two black and white stories are pretty quirky . One with Frankenstein becoming a secret agent on a speeding train who needs to save the President of the USA. In the last one Frankenstein goes to a costume party and no one realizes it.Next we jump back to the color books with Giant Size Werewolf #2 . This was an experiment with making quarterly double sized companion books. This team up with Werewolf By Night was by Moench and Don Perlin. It is a story about an evil cult and just seems mostly bloated filler.Next up are Frankenstein Monster #13 to #17 by Doug Moench and Val Mayerick this another long rambling arc in which Frankenstein get's a sidekick youth , battles a clone monster, travels to Swiss Alps to meet the Last Frankenstein, Doctor Victoria Frankenstein who restores some of his intellect and gives him the ability to talk again. He also battles a robotic Monster.Bill Mantlo takes over for the last issue Frankenstein Monster #18 and makes a mess of it. The Monster and his Metal Monster (now friend) are attached by dwarves who kill the Metal Monster and lead us to the Last Frankenstein Baroness Veronica Von Frankenstein. Did Mantlo not read the previous issue with The Last Frankenstein Dr. Victoria Frankenstein ? Anyways on that stupid cliff hanger the book is cancelled. But that doesn't end this collection because we get the two part Marvel Team-up from 1975 #32 and #33. This story is from Gerry Conway and Sal Buscema and features and evil mad scientist and a pretty Agent Of Shield. The Man-Wolf is featured in the second half. When last we left The Frankenstein Monster he had limited intellect and speach but here he is as articulate as Peter Parker. The book started out Bi-Monthly. When sales came back on the early issues it went monthly between issues #6 and #8 . But sales soon dropped quickly and the Monster lumbered off with very few appearances since this collection. It is easy to see why the book was cancelled as it seems to loose all direction and the character changes from story to story. I read the first half of the book in a spree of delight in one day. But then I crawled through the back half in a week.Overall Good Art, Excellent Production values and mixed writing. Well worth having in your library.

Highs and Lows for the Monster at Marvel By Dan Pace (feral atom) Collects The Monster of Frankenstein 1-18, Giant-Sized Werewolf 2, Marvel Team-up 36-37, material from Monsters Unleashed 2, 4-10, and Legion of Monsters #1 (1975).Ploog's artwork is excellent on the Frankenstein issues. The overall collection has several highpoints and a few lowpoints. The retelling of Shelley's work is mostly excellent, if a bit labored in the stage setting of the first issue. Ploog excels, especially with the water renderings. I read these issues years ago at my uncle's house. In rereading for the first time since, I was surprised how dark the Comics Code allowed these stories to become. Both of the lead characters commit despicable acts, though we sympathize with the Monster's plight.John Buscema has some rough linework in both the comic and the magazine work, with the black and white work being cleaner, but a bit too simple when contrasted with Mayerik. A few of Buscema's panels look like they were enlarged from smaller images. The Monsters Unleashed work compares favorably to concurrent work on Warren magazines from the 70s. Val Mayerik's artwork was fantastic on the 4-color issues and the black and white magazines. Doug Moench's writing was very good on the magazine issues. The two-parter with Winters was a bit bizarre in that the woman was knocked out for so long, even as the Monster battles the "Freaks", tigers, and the police, but I enjoyed the stories nonetheless. The "spy" story where assassins are on a train with Frankie and a woman was different. I enjoyed this one as well, though the plot sounds very odd as I'm writing it out.The later comic stories go off the deep end. The robot story is especially weird as the robot changes character from one issue to the next.Though this wasn't the best from Marvel's horror in the Bronze Age, I'm ecstatic that Marvel has collected this material. Now if only we could get Chamber of Darkness and Tower of Shadows collected...

Worthwhile but not the best '70s Marvel horror title By Jim Davis With the relaxation of the comics code in the early 1970s Marvel launched a number of horror themed titles in short order. Many of these titles (Tomb of Dracula, Man Thing, Werewolf by Night) have been recently collected in deluxe hardcover omnibus editions. The present title has had to settle for a trade paperback (and digital) collection. It is easy to see why this was the case. The book starts out very well indeed with a (mostly) faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel. Mike Ploog is in outstanding form pencilling the story. Thereafter, things fall apart quickly as inconsistencies appear. The monster becomes as powerful or as weak as the plot demands. Sophisticated at some places he is suddenly childishly naive at others. Homicidal and vindictive one moment, won't harm a fly the next...The nadir occurs during the Legion of Monsters black and white magazine story arc. Our villain Derek McDowell knows nothing of the "molecular transposer" in one issue but knows all about it in the next. Originally, all this device did was transfer personalities between bodies in classic science fiction tradition. Then that is changed to actually transferring the brains themselves! All in all, very painful to read this mishmash. The stories are also hurt by the lack of supporting characters once the cast of the original novel is dispensed with. Also hurting the series is the jumping around in time period from the late 1700s to the late 1800s to the 1970s. How many times can the frozen in a block of ice plot device be employed? There is some recovery in the last six issues but the damage had already been done and the series ended in mid-story (I don't believe it was ever resolved). The monster also was integrated more closely into the Marvel universe with appearances with Dracula, Werewolf by Night, and Spider-Man.Extras consist of some original art and covers of previous collections.I bought the digital version on Comixology. I was very pleased at how everything looked on the Comixology iPad ap. The book was not available on Kindle for some reason. In conclusion, for the Marvel completist only. The weaknesses of the stories are not entirely the fault of the writers. Frankenstein's monster really doesn't lend himself well to an ongoing series. Story after story about the almost total isolation of his circumstances wears thin very quickly.
