Everyone wants a good relationship, but very few people have the courage to attain one. Many of us spend years spiraling in and out of failed relationships and marriages only to find ourselves becoming less likely to trust anyone with our hearts in the future. So how do you stop the cycle of failed relationships and maintain a solid, loving relationship with your chosen mate? You start by telling and accepting the truth. Von Decarlo and Patrice O’Neal, a comedian well known for his brutal honesty, shared a long-lasting ten-year relationship before his passing in 2011. She credits him for teaching her how to become a better woman, mother, wife, friend, performer, and business person. By abstaining from marginalizing and rejecting his man truth, Von Decarlo became fluent in “speaking man,” thereby gaining the empathy and knowledge of the male species. A book for both men and women, Von Decarlo shares the philosophies taught to her by Patrice O’Neal that enabled her to speak fluent man and have such a unique, successful relationship with him for a decade. From O’Neal, Von lived and learned the true give-and-take of a successful relationship; they were partners in every sense of the word, fully supporting one another’s dreams and endeavors. Having lived every woman’s dream of a dynamic relationship, today Von Decarlo, also known as "Coach Von", observes and guides women (and men) regarding their relationship foibles and quandaries, from her perspective. This level of her “coaching” is from her personal experience. And lest that title, Speak Fluent Man: The Top Things Women Should Consider Before Blaming The Man, sound anti-woman, Von Decarlo asserts that ladies should be mindful that equality and accountability goes both ways. There is the woman’s side, the man’s side and hopefully, there is their side, when they come together/work together and agree to build a mutually beneficial union between them. Speak Fluent Man is a great read for men as well, considering that although they already speak their own language, men sometimes do not know how to translate and teach it to their significant others as Patrice did so successfully. Patrice's ability to teach Von how to think above her emotions as a woman into a logical place, is the foundation of what she says enabled her to understand and accept “man truth”, and thus realizing the secrets to a successful relationship. Whether you are male, female, heterosexual, bisexual, transsexual, or transgender, Speak Fluent Man can help you to realize the full potential in any type of relationship, by helping you to understand how to have the courage to live in your own truth, and accept the truth of others unconditionally.

Great Read....Couldn't put it down By Byron Miller First off Thank you Coach Von for having the strength to write that last chapter I couldn't even imagine how hard it was to writeSecondly the book is very insightful and thought provoking. I've listened to Patrice's wisdom for years but for some reason seeing it written down and structured is making more sense to me and thus I will start to use it in my everyday life. This is also a great guide to teach my daughter to become more than her nature and to rise above and have a personalityThanks again and can't wait for the next book

If you didn't know, Patrice O'Neal was more than a comedian. He was a philosopher. When Patrice was alive, everybody wanted him to write a book, but he never got around to it before he died. He said he wanted Von to write about his philosophies from her perspective. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first since I tend to prefer a book about someone's life or thoughts to be written by them so I didn't know how it was going to turn out.It turned out to be one of the best books that I have ever read in my life. Von did a great...no...Von did a superb job of capturing the essence of Patrice's perspectives in this book. It was like I could hear him speaking to me while reading it. I would say it's quite the page turner, but that would be an understatement. Not only does Von talk about Patrice's philosophies. She uses very personal details from her life to help illustrate their meaning. There is a part in the book where Von talks about how a couple should complement each other. It sounds like common sense, but Von breaks it down so people can understand you shouldn't try to change someone or try to force them to act a certain way that is not their nature. There are so many great parts in this book that it would be too much to type. I wouldn't want to spoil it anyway. This book isn't just about relationships, but life in general. To be honest, reading this book has had a impact on me. It made me look in the mirror and check myself. Patrice always talked about wanting to live life in righteousness. That is something that I'm definitely trying to do.I think anyone male or female would gain some perspective that would help them in life after reading this book. I will go as far as to say, reading this book would be more helpful than any relationship counseling if a couple were going through something. It would definitely help them examine themselves and fix anything in the relationship that can be fixed. It also might let them know that they aren't really compatible and would probably be better off going their separate ways. That might sound a little harsh, but Patrice always was about a person needing to get their medicine(figuratively speaking of course) no matter how bad they thought it tasted.Nobody Did It Better. This is so true about Patrice and it's also a reference to the song "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon. It was one of Patrice's favorite songs and you will find out why while reading. It's one of my favorite parts of the book. It's also one of the saddest parts because it makes you miss Patrice even more. He was definitely one of the greatest comedians to ever live. If not the greatest. His routines and outlook on life not only made you laugh out loud, but really made you think. Of course, Patrice wasn't the only comedian to do this. He stood out by way he was able to break down just about any subject and look at it logically which was really something. Not only that, It seemed like Patrice was on a mission to help people live a better life. It was like he was a comedic life guide. This book is a guide for life that I will be definitely referring back to. I feel that it should be taught in psychology, philosophy, and/or sociology classes. It's that deep.I'm so glad Von wrote it. I know it had to be hard to reveal and relive certain things like Patrice's death for example. I'm also glad my purchase went to support Patrice's family and his legacy. After reading this book, it makes me wish Patrice was still with us more than ever. His perspective is definitely needed today. I could go on and on about how great this book is. To whoever who is reading this, stop everything you are doing and purchase it right now. You won't regret it. I most certainly didn't. To Von, thank you so much for writing it. I know I'm not the only one, but I really appreciate it.R.I.P. Patrice

It's Honest By Lewis Thank you Von for the peak inside your life with whom I consider one of the greatest and most underrated thinkers of our time Patrice O'Neal. This is not a step by step guide that tells you how to make your relationships magical... It's more of an outline on how to look inside of yourself and find your truth that will make you and your partner better for it.

At Home in Persimmon Hollow is the first book in a series chronicling the world of Agnes Foster and the people of frontier era Florida. In 1886, Agnes Foster is forced to leave the Catholic orphanage in New York where she grew up, to start a new life as a teacher in Persimmon Hollow, Florida, a town she has only ever seen in a newspaper ad.

With nothing but her strong Catholic faith to sustain her, she leaves behind the only home she's ever known and the little girl she hopes to adopt. She encounters a wild and beautiful new landscape and a town full of hardworking, faith-filled people. She also meets difficult yet handsome and hard-to-ignore Seth Taylor, a man whose heart has been hardened to God after a terrible loss.

Just as Agnes starts to feel Persimmon Hollow could be a good home for her and her daughter, and that Seth could be her love, tragedy strikes in the form of a trio of evil men from both their pasts, intent on doing them more harm. Will their fragile new love survive? Will Seth return to his faith? Can Agnes finally escape her dark past and find a bright new future?

The characters are real, the conversations are natural for the time period and the narrative flows well. I enjoy that here is a love story with an exciting story line that does not rely on graphic sex and risque language. Yes, it is a story of faith but you don't have to agree with the faith of the heroine in order to get caught up in her struggles and drawn into the themes of love, courage and the desire to be a better person. I had no idea Gerri Bauer could write so well...I knew her in high school and bought the book to support an old classmate...but I was so pleased to find that this is a book I would have wanted to read anyway. I am looking forward to reading more of her books to come.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. wonderful wonderful story. By verasbookreviewsandstuff In 1886, Agnes Foster flees, St. Isidore’s Home, the only home she has ever known to find herself on a train bound for the frontier, Persimmon Hallow, Fl. At the behest of Miss Eunice and Fanny Alloway of Persimmon Hallow, Agnes is the new teacher. Agnes was raised by nuns in an orphanage, and has a solid faith in God and is a devoted Catholic. Florida is a world away from the city and Catholic orphanage, but the teaching of Mother Superior was ingrained in Agnes, especially, her advice that preachiness is not Godliness and to not offer advice when it is not sought. Mother Superiors advice to Agnes is sorely tested when she meets Seth Taylor. Seth is the Uncle to young Billy, whom Agnes agreed to watch over on the train until they reached Persimmon Hallow. There is mystery about Agnes flight from the orphanage leaving young orphan Polly, whom she deeply loves and wants to adopt. Agnes’ mystery is eventually revealed as it now concerns Polly. Seth has his own mystery; what happened to make this handsome man lose his faith, become aloof, lonely, and unfriendly to his fellow neighbors and church. I found this very intriguing. As the mystery surrounding Seth is revealed, Agnes finds herself attracted to him. The extent evil surprised me, as the mysteries were of Seth and Agnes are revealed. The world is truly evil at times as Seth and Agnes discovered. Agnes has great faith in God; Seth avoids anything to do with God.I think the author handles the religious aspect very well; I did not feel preached to but rather was feeling the faith of the character and the scripture from their point of view in the situation in the story. I watched the characters grow in their love of each other, for the community and achieve forgiveness for themselves and others. The town of Persimmon Hallow is a very faith-based hard-working community that is very close. This small town sure has a lot going on; from Agnes and Seth’s mystery’s, shootings, fights, intrigue, engagements for propriety’s sake; the return of evil forces to Agnes and Seth, the plots just keep coming and coming. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I would recommend this book to any one.I received this book from Barbour Publishing in return for an honest review. As you can see, I have not determined how to post a copy of the book cover on my blog. I am working on it.

By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader At Home in Persimmon Hollow by Gerri Bauer is a Christian romance novel. The book is set in Persimmon Hollow, Florida in 1886. Agnes Foster was raised in St. Isidore’s Home (for orphans) by nuns since she was left on their doorstep as a baby. Due to pressure from the patrons of the home (because of the incident with Rufus Smith), Agnes has accepted a teaching position at Persimmon Hollow Academy in Persimmon Hollow, Florida. She arrives in town with Billy Taylor (age 12). Agnes agreed to keep an eye on Billy when he boarded in Jacksonville (his aunt put him on the train). Billy is going to stay with his Uncle Seth Taylor.Seth Taylor is waiting at the station for Billy to arrive. Seth is not the greatest welcoming committee (the death of his brother and sister-in-law as well as the railroad people trying to get his land through unscrupulous means). The Alloway’s and other townspeople are very happy to see Agnes. Agnes is to stay with Eunice and Fanny Alloway (they are her bosses at the Academy as well). Agnes is immediately drawn into life in Persimmon Hollow when there is a death in town. Everyone joins in to help with the funeral arrangements (building the coffin, digging the grave, gathering flowers, food).Over time Seth starts to mellow as he spends more time with Agnes. Seth is drawn to Agnes and her positive outlook on life (her helpful nature and a scripture quote for every occasion). Seth starts rejoining life in town (he has mostly kept to himself for the last ten years). The only problem is Barrel and Lester Little. They are trying to get Seth to sell his land to the railroad and will do whatever it takes to get what they want.Agnes’ trouble follows her to Persimmon Hollow. She has been trying to get away from Rufus Smith. Rufus Smith is a nasty man who owns a brothel. He is determined to get Agnes (using illegal methods). When he also tries to get Polly Todd (Agnes has raised her since she first came to the St. Isidore’s), Polly is sent to Persimmon Hollow. Unfortunately, Rufus tracks down Agnes and Polly. Rufus joins up with Lester Little and Barrel (nothing worse than three bad people joining together). The town will come together to help Seth, Agnes, and Polly. At Home in Persimmon Hollow is a cute story, but it is very preachy. I enjoy reading Christian fiction, but when a book contains more scripture than story, it is too much. There are some good characters in the story and a nice setting. I just thought that Agnes came across as very pious. Hearing the descriptions of the orange groves reminded me of when I first came to Florida. We lived in Lakeland at the time and there were miles of citrus groves (our first home in Lakeland was built in a citrus grove). I give At Home in Persimmon Hollow 3 out of 5 stars.I received a complimentary copy of At Home in Persimmon Hollow from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

By sarah jones I've been following this webcomic for a while and was pretty bummed when Amazon wasn't able to get it to me by the release date. I went out and bought it at Barnes & Noble and was not disappointed. Reza's musings have me rolling on the floor with laughter; from standing in line behind a baby to old favorites like #crusant, I was more than happy to pay the extra few dollars to get this book in my hands today. Looking forward to more from this artist.

When I saw that there was a book, I knew I had to read it. I wasn't at all disappointed. If you're a long time reader of the web comic like I am, don't fret. This publication includes a mixture of the old, classic panels as well as ones that have never been seen before. I really liked that the blend of the two. The old ones always make me laugh, but it's nice to have new material as well. The comics are divided into sections by themes, like Nature. If you're not familiar with this book, then just be warned it's not a kid's book. All in all, I'm happy with this book. It's a really fast read, but I got more than a few laughs out of it. I like the simple artwork, and the weird, sarcastic, pun-derful humor happens to perfectly align with my own. More than once, I've posted these comics to my girlfriend's wall because it relates to us in some form. It's really hard to rate and review this book, because you really just have to check the book out for yourslf. If you're looking for a good chuckle, check this book out. I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Poorly Drawn Lines calls all of the above to mind. Reza Faramand has compiled some of his comics from poorlydrawnlines.com, plus some short essays, into this book.If you have an appreciation for off-beat, random humor, you will enjoy his take on dating, life in space, being a writer, soap, drinking and other essentials of life. (By the way, Poorly Drawn Lines is not for children. Rated-R language.)Here's a selection that I could really relate to:I know you see me . . . I see that little glance and I know you're watching me reach for the cantaloupe again.Seven. I've had seven pieces of cantaloupe. . . . Look at the chewed-out rinds glazing over in a haphazard stack on my paper plate. Count them. Count them and judge me as you look toward the cantaloupe bowl and then down at your napkin, which you're using as a plate because you've had only two slices . . . .I'm the wolf of cantaloupe and I will eat it all and feel nothing of this shame you try to project at me . . .Oh, yeah. I'm going out to buy some cantaloupe now. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A Peacemaking Heart By Joshua Morgan This review first appeared on my blog, Jacob's Café.During my graduate program, I got to be involved in a research project exploring Muslim-Christian interfaith peacemaking. It included dialogue between evangelical Christians and Muslims from across the country to create a new peacemaking manual. My dissertation was a secondary study on this initial project, too, so I became very familiar with ideas of faith-based peacemaking.Since that time, I have been very interested in the few faith-based peacemaking programs in existence, particularly those that are of any good quality. Peacemaking Ministries has been one that I have been following for a few years that I have really liked. They offer a variety of paid and free resources, including a weekly email devotional.Ken Sande, the founder of Peacemaking Ministries, wrote Resolving Daily Conflict along with Kevin Johnson. This book provides some very strong peacemaking techniques that are well grounded in both the Bible and peacemaking theory. The thing that frustrated me in my peacemaking research is that many of the peacemaking suggestions were rather repetitive and separated from actual practice. Sande's work is augmented by his own peacemaking work, which makes it far more credible. However, being familiar with the peacemaking literature, the techniques are not that novel. There were two elements of this book that I really appreciated. The first was the broad definition of peacemaking. Rather than just looking at traditional violence, Sande and Johnson note how managing daily conflict is actually peacemaking,The more notable element coincided with one of the conclusions of my dissertation, that peacemaking activity needs to be rooted in the development of a peacemaking heart. What I noted is that virtually all peacemaking literature solely looks at actions. The problem with that is action without real intent will fall flat, hence the relatively ineffectiveness of peacemaking training programs and interventions to revolutionize the world. I proposed that developing more of heart of peacemaking would make the techniques more successful.Sande and Johnson's work is the first and only text that explains peacemaking strategies that actually explores and encourages developing such a peacemaking heart. They initiated their tome through explaining how peacemaking is central to God's heart, the Christian faith, and Christian living. They emphasized how important it is to be close with God and have our hearts shaped by God in order to be effective peacemakers.Again, although the actual peacemaking strategies are nothing new, the emphasis on heart and connection to God puts this text far above other resources that I have encountered.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. It offers the basics of a practical and effective approach to dealing with the kinds of conflict we all experience nearly every day. With lots of examples, it goes beyond "techniques" and lays out how conflict can actually be a catalyst for life-changing reconciliation and even transformation. I read the book in a couple hours on an airplane and have already had opportunities to put its principles into practice. I can't say enough about how helpful it is! It's well worth it to read and apply the principles to daily life with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or anywhere conflicts happen (whether large or small). Who doesn't run into conflicts? Who knew they could lead to BETTER relationships? This is a gem of a book.

This is a quick read if you have an hour of your time to spare (I read my copy at a car dealer). If you liked CK Brooke's previous works, then it is likely that you'll like this novella due to her style of storytelling. If her books were thought of as a full course meal, I think this book would be considered as a palette cleanser to get you ready for her upcoming novel. Compared to other YA novels/novellas, this one is quite tame in terms of the romance. To my knowledge, this novella is meant for a younger demographic (teenagers), so it makes sense that the romance is more "whimsical," "fantasy-like," "dreamy," or whatever word you would like to use. Either way, I enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy it, too.

The characters are charming By Jakob Musick I have read CK Brooke's previous two novels, and I believe that is another solid fantasy-romance work. I must preface this by saying I have never read a romance novel that I actually until her previous work "The Duchess Quest" .With "Fool Moon", CK Brooke returns to the novella form for the first time in almost a decade (her previous novella is lost, and is said to be selling on the web for exorbitant prices). This novella is more solidly in the 'romance' camp than "Duchess," though the novel takes place in another fantastic world. The characters are charming, the story is sweet, and there is a good deal of landscape and progression in the story to keep you entertained . I would absolutely recommend this book, especially if you just have a day to kill.....I read it in one day!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Melodic, mythical and fun to read By Michele DeLuca "Fool Moon" is melodic, mythical, and fun to read. The story is captivating, rich with author C.K. Brooke's story-telling skills, and yet with new characters quite different from those in her other wonderful books, such as "Duchess Quest." I read it for a few nights in a row before I fell asleep and it was a perfect little love story to set the tone for my dreams. I didn't want it to end. It's about a young woman who sets off on a quest to find the witch that has cursed her family, and a handsome woodlands rescuer who has an inexplicable ability to keep the worst of the curse at bay. Their journey to find the witch and defeat her makes for a sweet fairy tale that both young adult and young at heart readers will enjoy.

Ebook PDF Radiance: A Spiritual Memoir by Evelyn UnderhillFrom Brand: Paraclete Press (MA)

Drawing from both her published writings and her private journals, this compilation presents a candid look at the extraordinary spiritual journey of Evelyn Underhill. We glimpse a picture of her essentially secular childhood, her early spiritual awareness, her innate sense of deep compassion for others, and the curiosity that drove her classic work, Mysticism. We see the expression of her spiritual life move from the academic tone of Mysticism to a deeper, warmer hue in her later writings and retreats. Possibly most eye-opening, we witness Underhill's profound spiritual struggle of 1923-24, unsuspected by her friends and family. For the many readers who have been moved by the writings of Evelyn Underhill, and for those who are merely intrigued by mysticism or captivated by a good memoir, this book presents a vivid and deeply personal rendering of a life that was, both intellectually and spiritually, radiant.

Radiance: A Spiritual Memoir by Evelyn UnderhillFrom Brand: Paraclete Press (MA)

From Publishers Weekly Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941) is perhaps best known for her 1911 classic, Mysticism, continuously in print to the present day. An English laywoman with no theological education, she wrote more than 30 spirituality books, lectured to Oxford scholars and Church of England clergy, led spiritual retreats and encouraged ecumenism decades before women began to assume religious leadership. Bangley has selected excerpts from her published writings, journals, letters and speeches to show Underhill's personal spiritual development as she moved from cool academic reflection through struggle and doubt to settled trust: "I do feel that trusting God must mean trusting Him through thick and thin." One reason for Underhill's popularity may have been her view that mysticism was for everybody, in all circumstances: "The true mystic quest may as well be fulfilled in the market as in the cloister, by Joan of Arc on the battlefield as by Simeon Stylites on his pillar." Hers was no self-absorbed, feel-good spirituality, however: "Any spiritual view which focuses attention on ourselves, and puts the human creature with its small ideas and adventures in the center foreground, is dangerous till we recognize its absurdity." Her God was transcendent: "a Reality independent of the worshipper, which is always more or less deeply colored by mystery, and which is there first." Despite its subtitle, this book is not really a memoir; Underhill wrote in the first person only in her journals and, in any case, distrusted subjective experience. It is nevertheless a captivating introduction to one of the 20th century's most appealing spiritual writers. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "The carefully selected passages from Mysticism alone are worth the price of this book." -- National Catholic Reporter

About the Author Bernard Bangley is a recently retired Presbyterian minister who has written for many years. His previous books include "Growing in His Image, Spiritual Treasure, Near to the Heart of God, "and "Talks on the Song of Songs. "Educated at Hampden-Sydney College and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, he has held pastorates from the Appalachian Mountains to Sarasota, Florida. He now lives in Lexington, Virginia.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Strong encouragement to explore further. By Dougal Fraser This representative selection of Evelyn Underhill's writing stretches from the eve of her 17th birthday till the end of her life and includes sections of essays, books, retreat addresses, poems, and private letters. The rather purple prose of her 1910 Mysticism becomes plainer and more direct as her spiritual life and maturity increasingly appreciate the value of silence. She dislikes willful eccentricity, sentimental indulgence, emotional self-gratification, false piety and the modish cultivation of personality. Readers who want to float off into pink clouds of mystical effusion will have their vanity repeatedly wounded. Underhill is a well grounded realist, insisting on the discipline of mysticism and the ego-puncturing power of obedience. Her letters to spiritual directors, for example, make it plain that even if their suggestions are unpalatable to her, she will give them a sincere run.Bernard Bangley's memoir is ideally suited for anyone making a first approach to Underhill, while any section could be usefully re-read by those wanting to reinvigorate their spiritual practice. He has made a very good selection of some of Underhill's most telling insights. He has removed her copious textual notes, which makes reading smoother. But quite often I regretted not knowing the source of a quotation, even if, as Bangley explains in the introduction, a number of the original texts are out of print. This is a small quibble. To find Underhill's sources, all that is needed is to read the full versions of her writings. Bangley's edition stimulates strong encouragement to push exploration further.

A spiritual parable about a rebel with the power to transform lives For thirty years, Fatimah has tended her herd of goats and waited for her lover to return. Amado was banished after leading a revolt against the cruel despots of their village—the Seventh City of the Fifth Sun. He followed the teachings of the wise men and women and roamed the desert in search of knowledge. When his exile finally ends, he returns transformed—no longer the innocent lover of Fatimah’s youth but a prophet named Jalamanta, or “he who strips away the veils that blind the soul.” He brings enlightenment, cures addictions, and can perform miracles, But Jalamanta’s enemies see him as a dangerous threat to the status quo and will use any means necessary to stop him. His deep wellspring of faith and compassion will not allow him to give up or give in—even as he faces the greatest betrayal of all.   A searing indictment of tyranny, oppression, and human suffering, Jalamanta is about the age-old battle between good and evil that rages in every heart. It is also a tribute to the love that is the creative force of the universe—the light that can banish ignorance and fear and illuminate the darkest corners of the soul.

Jalamanta: A Message from the Desert, by Rudolfo Anaya

From Publishers Weekly Anaya's preachy New Age parable is a sharp departure from the yeasty realism that won him a large readership for novels like Bless Me, Ultima and Alburquerque. Wise, gray-haired, cotton-robed heretic Jalamanta, returning from 30 years of politically enforced exile in the desert, rejoins his faithful wife, Fatimah, and attracts new followers with his teachings. He urges listeners to pursue the "Path of the Sun"?to meditate, love one another, revere the Earth and find a path of their own choosing. According to Jalamanta, we can fill our souls with the light of the "First Creation" and evolve toward a higher consciousness. Inevitably, he clashes with the "central authorities"?who promote militaristic dogma, established religion and cynical manipulation of the masses?and brings down the wrath of Benago, their chief inquisitor. Jalamanta's pronouncements freely synthesize Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, Native American, gnostic and shamanic traditions to present a universal message of fellowship. Like all lofty sentiments, these become somewhat platitudinous with repetition. Author tour. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Thirty years ago, Jalamanta and his people were exiled in the desert, banished from the Seventh City for challenging the monolithic dogmas of the Central Authority. Now, Jalamanta returns to his wife, Fatimah, and to his village full of new wisdom about the oneness of humankind and nature and about the nature of love. Jalamanta's teachings about the Path of the Sun challenge the sterile religious institutionalism of the Central Authority and encourage his villagers to seek their own spiritual paths. Anaya (Bless Me, Ultima, Warner, 1994) has fashioned a New Age Joshua in which Jalamanta is a kind of Christic guru preaching an exotic blend of ego psychology, Christian theology, and Hinduism. Recommended for libraries where Anaya's books are in demand.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Jalamanta, exiled in the desert for 30 years for questioning the dogma of the repressive Central Authority, has returned to his village and his beloved wife, Fatimah. In a series of community gatherings, Jalamanta continues to preach his revolutionary philosophy on the spiritual path of enlightenment, drawing ever greater crowds. Ultimately betrayed by a childhood friend, he is once again taken prisoner by the authorities. Anaya's religious fable is more clichethan story as his New Age desert wanderer repeatedly speaks of "stripping away the veils of the soul" and "becoming one with the Universal Light." The novel is at its best when depicting the special relationship shared by Fatimah and Jalamanta, but this story thread doesn't stand much of a chance when it's surrounded by so much artifice. Still, there seems to be a huge demand for material that deals with spirituality, no matter how it's served up, and this title may well appeal to the same vast audience that went for The Celestine Prophecy (1994) and Mutant Message Down Under (1994). A must for anyone seeking "Inner Light" By A Customer Is Jalamanta a fictitious story of a man banished by his government for his religious insight, or is it a parable of what today's society is becoming. Rudolfo Anaya does a wonderful job of making one look at themself and ask "What is my path and how does it interconnect with others." Do we believe everything we read in the papers and see on TV, or do we strive for the true answers? I think many will ask themselves if they really even know what questions to ask much less what truths to seek. The story takes us down a path of enlightenment through the eyes of others. It will make you question some of your own dogmas and how they influence your interaction with others in everyday life.

By Gerilyn Healey A great parable of a radical visionary thrown out of society by the powers-that-be...are we in the ancient cradle of civilization (east) or along the Rio Grande? Timeless, universal parable of living truthfully, compassionately, and honoring true leaders who spark a fire of love and compassion...trust your heart (transcend institutional juggernaut)

The story revolves around four generations of women who read from a magical book. The book tells the story of seers and healers and the possible reincarnation of one. The writing was straightforward with hints of powerful prose. For example, the main male character describes his lover as "She was the sunset and its rise, the moisture that lingers on the petals of fragrant flowers, the rain that kept the Earth green and fed. She was his full belly, his wallet on payday, his favorite song and the goodness his mother bestowed on the morning he took his first breath."Although "Tabitha Fay" does not have a traditional plot, it is worth the reading if you're interested in African American history or mythology.

Reichenbach was not his deepest fall.... Autumn 1903 has not been kind to Sherlock Holmes. Irene Adler, his platonic love, is dead, and the detective has again fallen into the clutches of cocaine. Dr Watson hopes that the distraction of a marriage fraud case can help pull his friend out of his depression. But it soon becomes clear that behind the apparently banal crime lurks something much more sinister, something that will take Holmes and Watson to faraway Bohemia, where they must face an unimaginably terrible enemy. A corpse has been discovered on the grave of Rabbi Loew and Prague's Jews are whispering about the Golem...

The ratiocination / analytical detection is sparse, the plot depends on coincidence, and the Holmes depicted at the end is not the Holmes we know and love. There is a lot of action, though., and some readers may be sufficiently sustained by that. The writing style, dialog, etc, were not bad. The funniest thing in the story was the misspelling (perhaps abetted by a spell-checker) that described a restaurant as famous for its "cosines." Perhaps it was frequented by students studying trigonometry.

The story starts off with a bang, the pace is nonstop and there are misdirections, false starts and surprises galore. A book of this nature is not designed o be read leisurely over time. The suspense keeps building to a climax which is both surprising and unexpected--to say the least. In my collection of 300+ Holmes/Watson pastiches, this one would rank in the top echelon. This author has a nice tough and I look forward to his future offerings.

From the Author Randy Willis is the author of Three Winds Blowing, Louisiana Wind, Texas Wind, LIGHT, The Apostle to the Opelousas, The Story of Joseph Willis, and is the co-author of Twice a Slave, and many magazine and newspaper articles.     Twice a Slave has been chosen as a Jerry B. Jenkins Select Book, along with four bestselling authors. Jerry Jenkins is author of more than 180 books with sales of more than 70 million copies, including the best-selling Left Behind series.  Twice a Slave has also been adapted into a dramatic play (vimeo.com/99360694) at Louisiana College, by Dr. D. "Pete" Richardson  (Associate Professor of Theater with Louisiana College).  Randy Willis owns Randy Willis Music Publishing (an ASCAP-affiliated music publishing company), and Town Lake Music Publishing,LLC (a BMI-affiliated music publishing company). He is an ASCAP-affiliated songwriter. He is the founder of Operation Warm Heart (vimeo.com/41195752) which feeds and clothes the homeless, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Our Mission Possible (ourmp.org) in Austin, with the goal of empowering at-risk teens to discover their greatness.  He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Joseph Willis Institute at Louisiana College. He was born in Oakdale, Louisiana. He lived on Barber Creek  between Forest Hill and Longleaf, Louisiana, as a boy. He currently resides in the Texas Hill Country.  He graduated from Angleton High School in Angleton, Texas, and Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, with a BBA. He was a graduate student at Texas State University for six years. He's single and the father of three sons and has four grandchildren. All of his books are dedicated to them by name.  Randy Willis is a fourth great-grandson of Joseph Willis, and his foremost historian. ✯✯✯✯✯ The Birth of the Biographies, Novels and the Play....    And, the real-life connections between William Prince Ford, Solomon Northup, James "Jim " Bowie, and Joseph Willis As a child Randy Willis lived on Barber Creek (the location of many of his stories) between Longleaf and Forest Hill, Louisiana.  As a teenager, he worked  cows with his family, near Forest Hill, on the open range, owned by lumber companies. Seven generations of his family have lived there, beginning in 1828 with his 4th Great-Grandfather Joseph Willis.  Randy would often ride his horse through his family's neighboring property, which was once William Prince Ford's Wallfield Plantation, not realizing the significance of his ancestor's connection to Solomon Northup and William Prince Ford. ✯          ✯          ✯ After writing the biography The Apostle to the Opelousas, Randy Willis got the idea for the novel and the play Twice a Slave from his friend and fellow historian Dr. Sue Eakin.   She contacted him after reading an article that mentioned he had obtained the Spring Hill Baptist Church's minutes. The minutes had much information on two of its founders: Joseph Willis and William Prince Ford. Ford had bought the slave Solomon Northup on June 23, 1841, in New Orleans. He immediately brought him to his Wallfield Plantation. Just 46 days later, on August 8, 1841, Joseph Willis and William Prince Ford founded Spring Hill Baptist Church.  Ford's slaves attended the church with him, which was the custom in pre-Civil War Louisiana.   The plantation was located on Hurricane Creek, a fourth-mile east of present-day Forest Hill, Louisiana. It was located on the crest of a hill, on the Texas Road that ran along side a ridge. Northup called this area, in his book Twelve Years a Slave, "The Great Piney Woods."     Ford was also the headmaster of Spring Creek Academy located near his plantation and Spring Hill Baptist Church. It was there, in 1841, that Joseph Willis would live and entrust his diary to his protégé William Prince Ford, according to historian W.E. Paxton (A History of the Baptist of Louisiana, from the Earliest Times to the Present, 1888). ✯          ✯          ✯ Ford was not a Baptist preacher when he purchased Solomon Northup and the slave Eliza, a.k.a. Dradey, in 1841, as many books, articles, blogs, and the movie 12 Years a Slave have portrayed. The first part of the Spring Hill Baptist Church minutes are written in Ford's own handwriting since he was the church's first secretary and also the first church clerk. The minutes reveal that on July 7, 1842, Ford was elected deacon. On December 11, 1842, Ford became the church 's  treasurer, too.  It was during the winter of 1842 that Ford sold a 60% share of Northup to John M. Tibeats. Ford's remaining 40% was later conveyed to Edwin Epps, on April 9, 1843. It was not until February 10, 1844, that Ford was ordained as a Baptist preacher.  A year later, on April 12, 1845, Ford was excommunicated for "communing with the Campbellite Church at Cheneyville."  But, Ford's later writings reveal that he remained close friends with his neighbor and mentor Joseph Willis.    ✯          ✯          ✯  Dr. Eakin asked Randy Willis if he would help her with her research on William Prince Ford.  He also lectured in her history classes, at Louisiana State University at Alexandria, on the subject. Dr. Eakin wrote Randy Willis on March 7, 1984, "We had a wonderful experience dramatizing Northup and I think there could be a musical play on Joseph Willis. It seems to me it gets the message across far more quickly than routine written material." She added, "A fictional novel based upon Joseph Willis's life would be more interesting to the general public than a biography and would reach a greater audience."   Dr. Eakin is best known for documenting, annotating, and reviving interest in Solomon Northup's 1853 book Twelve Years a Slave. She, at the age of eighteen, rediscovered along-forgotten copy of Solomon Northup's book, on the shelves of a bookstore, near the LSU campus, in Baton Rouge. The bookstore owner sold it to her for only 25 cents. In 2013, 12 Years a Slave won the Academy Award for Best Picture. In his acceptance speech for the honor, director Steve McQueen thanked Dr. Eakin: "I'd like to thank this amazing historian, Sue Eakin, whose life, she gave her life's work to preserving Solomon's book."  ✯         ✯          ✯ James "Jim " Bowie was a neighbor of Joseph Willis when they both lived near Bayou Chicot, Louisiana.  Jim's brother, Rezin Bowie, was a neighbor to Joseph's eldest son Agerton Willis and eldest grandson, Daniel Hubbard Willis Sr. for four years (1824-1827) in the village of Bayou Boeuf. The name changed to Holmesville, in 1834, and is located near present-dayEola.  It was at Holmesville, on Bayou Boeuf, that Edwin Epps enslaved (1845-1853) Solomon Northup for the last eight years of his twelve year indenture.  ✯          ✯          ✯ It was in the village of Bayou Boeuf that Joseph's eldest son and Randy Willis's 3rd great-grandfather Agerton Willis met and married Sophie Story (an Irish orphan).  Their eldest son Daniel Hubbard Willis Sr. would be the first of many in the family to follow Joseph Willis into the ministry.  He even planted more churches in Louisiana than Joseph.  His son, Daniel Hubbard Willis Jr., is the main character in Randy Willis's novel Louisiana Wind. ✯✯✯✯✯Website: threewindsblowing.com    Randy Willis's Amazon author's page: amazon.com/author/randywillis     Three Winds Blowing trailer:  youtu.be/qbQXzF35aWETwice a Slave trailer: vimeo.com/93896657Twice a Slave, the play trailer: vimeo.com/99360694 Goodreads:  goodreads.com/randywillis Linkedin:  linkedin.com/in/randywillisbooks  Twitter: twitter.com/randywillisnews Blog: randywillisbooks.wordpress.com/WillisBooks Contact randywillis@twc.com

From the Inside Flap From master storyteller, Randy Willis...a story about adventure, family, faith and the character of a man that touched generations. The son of a white man and Cherokee slave, Joseph Willis, gains his freedom and swims the mighty Mississippi on a mule. Joseph Willis' life is a story of triumph over tragedy and victory over adversity! ✯ He was born into slavery. His mother was Cherokee and his father a wealthy English plantation owner. ✯ His family took him to court to deprive him of his inheritance (which would have made him the wealthiest plantation owner in all of Bladen County, North Carolina in 1776). ✯ He fought as a Patriot in the Revolutionary War under the most colorful of all the American generals, Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox. ✯ His first wife died in childbirth, and his second wife died only six years later, leaving him with five small children. ✯ He crossed the mighty Mississippi River at Natchez at the peril of his own life, riding a mule! ✯ He entered hostile Spanish-controlled Louisiana Territory, when the dreaded Code Noir (Black Code) was in effect. It forbade any Protestant ministers who came into the territory from preaching. ✯ His life was threatened because of the message he brought to Spanish-controlled Louisiana! ✯ His own denomination refused to ordain him because of his race. ✯ Joseph Willis preached the first Gospel sermon by an Evangelical west of the Mississippi River. ✯ After overcoming insurmountable obstacles, he blazed a trail for others for another half-century that changed American history. ✯ His accomplishments are still felt today. ✯      ✯      ✯      threewindsblowing.com

Joseph, is the son of a white man and Cherokee slave mother. Joseph, a slave to his own family received salvation and became a slave to God's work and became a pastor. This book is wonderfully written. It has exciting historical characters such as Solomon Northup (Twelve Years a Slave), James Bowie, and Marie Laveua (voodoo priestess) to name just a few. All of the characters come together to build the true life story of Joseph Willis. Both Three Winds Blowing and Twice a Slave are very good reads. I can't wait to get my hands on the next a Randy Willis book.

By Joyce Strother Carpenter Joseph Willis was a name I was always used to hearing in our home. He was my Dad's, Green W. Strother, Great Grandfather. My younger brother was also named Joseph Willis. Randy Willis has done a very good job of bringing Preacher Willis "alive" in Three Winds Blowing. It has been well written and the stories interesting, some causing smiles and "really?" Today so much of history is lost. It is good to know no only the history of our Nation, but also the Christian history and the people who made it.
