I had the pleasure of reading this - this past Sunday and it took me through a range of emotions. First the empathy I felt for ALL of what Cathy went through broke my heart and brought me to tears. Then in the next moment - it pleasantly brought me to laughter with Jay's humor to make it less uncomfortable to read about what their entire family endured! When you take your vows and they say for "better or for worse" people really don't realize what that really means!!! But I so appreciate the male perspective of what he and his family went through and how easy it could have been to take the easy road or cowardly road as so many maybe would have done and left when the going got extremely TOUGH. But I applaud and appreciate him putting on his BIG boy pants and standing solidly by his wife and his families side through it all as you should!!! It touched me so much that I asked my husband to read it as well and he too was floored by what they endured and appreciated Jay's candor as well! Thank you both and I pray that you get your message out to more families that could really use your the support, compassion and guidance that you both have to offer.

Make sure you read the preface as you will get the true love story of a husband and wife who make it through one of life's hardest battles. He states the thoughts going through his mind even if it makes him seem selfish, but he admits it and comes through as the person his wife and kids need him to be.

About the Author Born in a refugee camp after World War II, John Guzlowski came with his family to the United States as a Displaced Person in 1951. His parents had been Polish slave laborers in Nazi Germany. Growing up in the immigrant and refugee neighborhoods around Humboldt Park in Chicago, he met hardware store clerks with Auschwitz tattoos on their wrists, Polish cavalry officers who still mourned for their dead comrades, and women who had walked from Siberia to Iran to escape the Russians. His poetry, fiction, and essays try to remember them and their voices. His poems also remember his parents, who survived their slave labor experiences in Nazi Germany. A number of these poems appear in his books Language of Mules, Lightning and Ashes (Steel Toe Books), and Third Winter of War: Buchenwald (Finishing Line Press). Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz, reviewing the Polish translation of Language of Mules, for the journal Tygodnik Powszechny, said, “This volume astonished me.” A Professor Emeritus at Eastern Illinois University, John Guzlowski currently lives in Danville, Virginia, where he recently completed a novel about the German soldiers who murdered his mother’s family during the Second World War. The novel, Road of Bone, is available from Cervena Barva Press and Amazon. Garrison Keillor read Guzlowski’s poem “What My Father Believed” on his program, The Writers Almanac. Guzlowski’s other poems and stories have appeared in such national journals as North American Review, Ontario Review, Rattle, Chattahoochee Review, Atlanta Review, Nimrod, Crab Orchard Review, Marge, Poetry East, Vocabula Review and in the anthology Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust. By Michael Main Full disclosure: I was a colleague of John Guzlowski at Eastern Illinois University for two years in the mid-90's.John Guzlowski is an amazing poet, and as with his poetry this novel wastes no words; evoking place and time, but also mood and mind-set and the tensions of life in a big city rocked by violence.As a resident of Chicago's near North Side for over fifteen years, I can attest to the accuracy of the author's detailed glimpses into the corners of the parks of the city, the convent houses and shotgun bungalows, the bars and street corners where his world-weary detectives ply their trade.To say that this novel is about race, immigrants, and hatred would be an understatement. Yet it's also a novel about hope, about redemption, about peace. And it's a ripping good detective novel besides.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Far more here than just finding out whodunit By LMKaminski An excellent crime thriller -- I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The characters, settings, and social circumstances depicted in this novel all smack of veracity; I felt I could easily have been reading a nonfiction memoir written in the third person. While SUITCASE CHARLIE certainly delivers as a gripping detective novel, it also delivers a deeply disturbing glimpse into how racial and ethnic prejudices and propaganda can become dangerously institutionalized in society and internalized by individuals. Most crime thrillers are "read once and pass on to someone else" for me, but I'll be keeping this one to read again -- there's far more here than just finding out whodunit.

Someone is murdering children, draining their blood, chopping them up and stuffing them in suitcases. Hank Purcell is a seasoned detective and WWII veteran, assigned to the case. Along with his trouble-making, heavy drinking partner, Marvin Bondarowicz, the detectives search for clues among the dregs of the city.John Guzlowski has fictionalized a true-crime story and he's done a fantastic job of it. The subject matter is dark and going noir was probably the best, if not only, way to do it. 1950s Chicago probably had a certain grittiness to it and the characters in this novel definitely reflect that. The author remained true to the era and I appreciated that. I also appreciated the ending - without giving away spoilers, I liked the way book ended. And, although there was a satisfying conclusion, there still remains an opportunity for a sequel(s) involving these two detectives.I would recommend this book to fans of the noir genre and anyone who enjoys a good whodunit. About the Author T Robert Taylor (b. 1955) grew up in an Air Force family, living in Germany and five different states before age 16. He remembers winning 1st place in Illinois for art in eighth grade that built his confidence and gave him a sense of identity. He became his college newspaper's cartoonist and later graduated with a BS in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1978. In 1979-80 he had a couple of art shows featuring his paintings in Philadelphia, then moved to Colorado to work with his college friend Jeff as an art director in a three-person agency. "T, how would you like to come out to Colorado and be my art director?" he recalls the phone call from his buddy. "Sure! What does an art director do?" was his reply! T joined Jeff and a client who formed CareerTrack, a seminar company that became the 10th fastest growing privately-held company in America in 1986. In 1991 he left as its creative director to form The Creative Alliance, a strategic marketing and design firm, where he works today. Over the years T has formed a few other companies; including Nissi's, voted as Boulder County's Best Live Music Venue with his wife Teresa. He also serves as founder and CEO for Team Promark, a sports licensing company (NFL, MLB, NBA, etc.), and Mydor, also a licensing business (Disney, Marvel). In 2012 T was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma cancer. T believes his faith in God, his family and medical team pulled him through. That experience, coupled with T's love of history, animals and the Psalms, inspired him to write David Faith, Rise of a Poet Warrior.

By Windracer T Robert Taylor spins a compelling tale about the life and times of one of the Bibles most loved and admired persons -David. The story takes us on a journey through his life as a youth before he became king of Israel and up to the point just before he slays Goliath. With inspired writing we learn how life must have been back in that dynamic time period. Expect some dramatic twists and turns as the story unfolds. Throughly enjoyable I loved it.

Honestly,one of my favorite stories ever. It's a tale of young David, yes, that same David from the Old Testament - I guess one could call it Biblical Fiction.The story is captivating. I could not put this book down once I started turning the pages - in fact, I was sad once the words ran out on the final page. A GREAT first book, by T. Robert Taylor. I hope there's a sequel.

I was moved emotionally as David's journey unfolded.The story was gripping with unexpected twists and turns that made it a page turner.This was a well woven story with an ending that totally took me by surprise. A great read!

Hilda Dyer, Janet Dyer and Monica James are three generations of women from the same family. Each woman became pregnant as a teenager. Hilda was gang-raped and she kept it a secret for nearly her entire life. Janet, Hilda’s daughter, was seduced by a man whom she thought loved her, but later found out he was married and he only used her and then left her behind. And Monica, Janet’s daughter, became pregnant when she had unprotected sex with her teenage boyfriend. When Hilda became sick and was about to die, she told Janet the truth about her pregnancy. She also disclosed the identities of the men who had raped her. Hilda’s confession shocked Janet, leading to the realization that she might be related to the man who had gotten her pregnant. This knowledge took a negative hold on Janet’s life, causing her great distress. For many years, she sought comfort in alcohol. Janet refused to let go of her ugly past, but when her children began to suffer as a result of her actions, she discovered that she desperately needed to stop living in the past because if she didn't, she would continue to destroy her life, as well as her children’s.

By Kenneth Allan This volume collects the first six issues of the new Darth Vader solo comic series. In my opinion 'Darth Vader' is the strongest of the comics which have come out so far ('Star Wars', 'Princess Leia' and 'Kanan: The Last Padawan' being the others). Kieron Gillen is one of the best writers in comics today and excels when writing non-heroes (just see his amazing Kid Loki 'Journey into Mystery' series for proof). Salvador Larroca's art isn't revolutionary but it is very good and the colouring by Delgado brings the comic to life.Darth Vader follows the title character after the events of 'A New Hope' as he attempts to discover the truth about the young pilot who destroyed the Death Star, and as he tries to remain on the Emperor's good side. We find Vader teaming up with a young rogue-ish character and a deadly droid to give him a slightly more human/approachable side for the reader.Of particular note is issue #6 which crosses over with 'Star Wars' and is a great look into the emotions that Vader feels. I won't spoil everything, but the last panel is as good a close to a first volume as you could hope for.The only downside to these initial trade paperbacks is they are often short on extras. I would have loved to see some of the variant covers for #1 included in the back; instead we just get some boring sketches. Alas.

The Dark Lord's Dark Journey By Anarchy in the US Everyone loves a good villain and one of the best, and possibly most famous, is definitely Darth Vader. The character is an icon in pop culture, both visually (that Dr. Doom-like look) and audible (thanks to John Williams “Imperial March” theme). There are few villains who come close to his presence. So with the Disney buyout of Lucas products, Marvel (owned under Disney) has given the Sith lord his first ongoing series about him. With the success of the main series Star Wars Vol. 1: Skywalker Strikes under Jason Aaron and John Cassaday, I feel this series is in good hands.STAR WARS: DARTH VADER VOL.1: VADER collects issues #1-6 and take place between the events of Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The Death Star has been destroyed and the Emperor, Vader’s master, is disappointed in Vader’s failure to defend the space station. Seeing how the Sith do not tolerate failure (especially when it comes to a moon-sized weapon full of thousands of imperial workers), the Emperor has demoted Vader from his position as general of the Imperial fleet and now under the command of General Cassio Tagge (one know, the one guy who doubted Vader and his religion in the first film?). Vader is angry, not to mention he feels the Emperor might looking for a replacement due to his loses. With power slipping through his fingers, Vader plans to secretly build his own army if that’s what it takes to assume control.Kieron Gillen has a tough job of keeping all the aspects tied together from Vader being in control, cunning, and borderline unbeatable in the first two films, while keeping characteristics of the films and sister comic book from Jason Aaron in tact. Thankfully, I think Gillen does it well without interfering with continuity to Aaron’s work and still fill in some holes. This series can be read by itself or with conjuncture to Aaron’s Star Wars. Gillen keeps Vader like his film self being powerful and mysterious, yet because Vader is supposed to be a powerhouse and not weak, he would have no opposition. Gillen remedies this by having the conflict with Vader and his Master that shows some of this within the first three issues under the new command of general Tagge (which Vader hates). Nothing wrong with that, but a comic staring Vader cannot last long on that premise or else everything would be too easy for Vader. Thankfully, Gillen does this by expanding Vader’s supporting cast.Aphra, a rogue archeologist in search of lost weapons, Triple Zero and BT-1 are C-3PO and R2-D2 evil versions (with BT-1 having a load of weapons on him). The three additions are humorous to lighten the mood, get in trouble, and convey the narration, so it leaves Vader to come in and wreck havoc with little to say. This makes a good mix of duality having the supporting characters offset Vader’s power and presence. Not to mention, we still get some subtle insight on Vader in his mind and actions.All the art is carried entirely by Salvador Larrocca. If there is any high points to love is Larrocca’s art work. All the high detail, original designs of the original films are true to form, and Larrocca does a darn great job at showing the complexities of Vader considering he has no physical reactions. Some panels are less detailed than others, but it’s solid art all around.If there are any problems I had is Gillen does include aspects of the prequel films through flashbacks. This means some (or many) fans will hate, seeing as Jason Aaron’s Star Wars series make no connection to them at all. The flashbacks are very few thankfully, and only in Vader’s mind. He makes no mention of it to anyone. Additionally, the supporting cast just feels like evil versions of our heroes. Boba Fett and his Wookie partner are stand-ins for Han Solo and Chewbacca, while Triple Zero and BT-1 are C-3PO and R2-D2. And Aphra is a female Indiana Jones in space (an archeologist in Star Wars? I think Gillen is linking his two favorite franchises together). I do not think the new characters are bad, just simply not enough creativity I think. And the Emperor looking for an apprentice angle doesn’t sell because we all know Vader is the Emperor’s #1 guy in the films and isn’t replaced (though the added story with prospects to other apprentices does sound interesting).So it may have some flaws, but STAR WARS DARTH VADER VOL.1: VADER is still a promising start for a powerful character such as the Dark Lord. Gillen keeps most of Vader’s badass factors intact, by offsetting him with a opposite supporting cast, fills in some holes, and has great art to accompany it. The inclusion of the prequel films and slower pace might not sit well with readers, but I think Gillen can make things work.Not quite as strong as Jason Aaron’s STAR WARS comic, but still good.

Richmond It isn't easy to put one's finger on why this comic book, one about origins of Vader's internal and very personal rebellion, is so good. But good it is. The art on all the Marvel Star Wars comics leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been great. That is true here. The writers grasp Vader, and Star Wars too. The book has a dark melancholy feel, but like all good Star Wars fiction, it also finds fun and energy and joy. I doubt that things will end well for Vader's new "friends,' (how can they knowing what we know) but these relationships, with a death wishing tech wizard trying to foment a droid rebellion, and two murderous droids and perhaps, a couple of bounty hunters, are the first steps in his way back to his humanity.

Tons of action and the story gets better and better as we get to see more of some of the other characters in the series. I am now very excited for the rest of this series!

Tokyo ESP, volume 1, by Hajime Segawa

About the Author Hajime Segawa is a comic artist and character designer based out of Tokyo, Japan. He made is cartooning debut in the March 2005 issue of Kadokawa Publishing's Monthly Shonen ACE magazine with the short-story Phantom Kingdom (a comic adaptation of the PlayStation video game Makai Kingdom: Chronicles Of The Sacred Tome). By the end of the following year, Segawa was well onto developing his first feature length series GA-REI. GA-REI would continue for more than five years, spinning off a couple side-stories and eventually in 2008 a twelve episode animated TV series. Tokyo ESP is his second feature length series. Another hit in Japan, it was also recently adapted into a two season animated TV series. Segawa's works tend to involve the supernatural or psychic abilities, but are almost always set in modern day Tokyo with teenage leads.

Very good By Jude ~3.5/5This book was not quite what I expected, but I liked it.These fish start flying in the sky, and only certain people can see them. And when they go inside a person, it gives them special abilities. Like magnetism, or teleportation, or pyrokenesis, or super strength. Rinka can make herself able to walk through things, including things thrown at her. Her father is able to pull inanimate objects to himself, like cars. And Rinka meets a boy named Kyotaro who can teleport. They want to use their powers for good, but not everyone feels the same way.I really liked the way that Rinka charged forward, fighting and wanting to save people. And I liked that her and her father have such a close relationship, how much they care about each other. The way he was charging in to save her when he thought she was in danger, even with cars flying around him, was sweet. Kyotaro also clearly has a past, something he doesn’t want to talk about. Then there’s their flying penguin.This definitely has a more superhero feel to it than I expected. Rinka and Kyotaro try to save people as much as they can, barging in on hostage situations and such. And they run across a couple villains, with powers even stronger than theirs.I liked this volume. It was surprising to me, very superhero feeling, but a lot of the characterizing impressed me. By Nicola Mansfield My son is addicted to this series and I just had to give it a shot. It sounds very strange, and it is, but it also manages to be a fantastic piece of science fiction Japanese superhero manga at the same time! We start off with a flying penguin and glowing swarms of flying fish. The penguin seems to be chasing the fish and the daughter of a yakuza is secretly keeping him as a pet. When a person swallows, or rather when a fish enters a person, they get super powers. Rinka wakes up one day to find she can pass through solid objects, she meets a schoolmate, Azuma, who can transport and her father comes home from work with metal objects attached to him. Azuma wants to become a fighter for justice, help people, stop crime and tries to get Rinka to join him but she just wants to be human again. Then they meet a thief who can go invisible who frames them for her crimes and things just go all haywire from there. The yakuza get involved, the penguin has a power, Azuma has a secret past, beings from somewhere weird show up, oh my! What is going on? I love this!! Volume 2 is lined up ready and waiting!

Unique approach, accessible wisdom, encouraging tone By Ginny Kubitz Moyer, Author of "Taste and See" I received an advance reading copy of this book, and the moment I saw what the title was, I was hooked. I absolutely love the premise of this book: looking at the classic list of the Seven Deadly Sins and showing how they can influence our parenting. If "Seven Deadly Sins" sounds medieval, fear not; the authors explain them in a way that makes perfect practical sense, pointing out that they are forces that "have the effect of turning one's heart away from God's love and grace." And each of them (pride, lust, envy, greed, gluttony, sloth, and wrath) is presented in an accessible and encouraging manner.One of my favorite parts about this book is how each chapter starts with a little list of "10 Ways to Ruin Your Child" with this sin. For example, the list of how to ruin your child through pride includes "Never admit you were wrong. You will lose respect if you're not constantly perfect" and "Remind your children that you're better than they are -- at everything. It builds character" and "Church is for weak people. You're strong enough to do this without God." Each chapter then unpacks those ideas, helping parents see ways they can counteract these all-too-human tendencies and be more effective, happy, balanced parents.What's great about this book is that it does all of the above in such a positive, affirming way. It shows you how to strive for good, and reach it, and how to be positive witnesses to your children. There's something in here for every parent, no matter how old or young your kids are.

Good Resource on Children's Spiritual Development By Wes Kelley There are plenty of books that give advice about child development as a psychological project, but far fewer that address a child's spiritual development. I appreciate the book's grounding in the 7 deadly sins, culminating in the 7 cardinal virtues. Quinn uses this classical framework to take a humorous and gracious look at child-rearing. The book delivers great content without a didactic tone--it's as encouraging as it is helpful. I plan to use the book as a companion in my own journey of parenthood.

By Angela Spence Diggs This book goes through the "seven deadly sins" and applies them to raising your child. I often find myself reading parenting books and wondering what makes the author an authority on raising children, but not here. Quinn directly links everything back to scripture, but he avoids preaching. His use of his own family's experiences adds a nice touch of reality. Overall, excellent job and easy read. I highly recommend.

About the Author Kōsuke Fujishima is a Japanese manga artist. Born in Chiba, Japan, he first came to public attention as an editor of Puff magazine, his first job after completing high school. Fujishima originally intended to be a draftsman, but took the editorial role after failing to get a drafting apprenticeship. He later became assistant to manga artist Tatsuya Egawa in the production of the Making Be Free! manga, and in 1986 began his first original manga series You're Under Arrest. His second manga series Oh My Goddess!, also translated as Ah! My Goddess, is extremely popular and has made Fujishima a household name in Japan. Then again, all good things must come 2 a conclusion. Nice 2 see Keiichi & Belldandy (after all of the years & sexual tension) finally get married! Thought that they should 1/2 kept Urd & Shohei as a couple! Still, I liked this comic book series.

It is a well written history of the "Reefer Madness" era which is interwoven with an insider's view of the culture of the 60's and 70's and and comes out as a fictional account of an alternate reality in which Richard Nixon is reelected and the Vietnam War didn't happen. The characters are full of life and well developed, such as Ginny, a go-go dancer who went to Yale law school and Mulligan, a naval officer assigned to guard the President. Featuring Richard Nixon as you've never seen him before. There are lots of adventures and the story moves right along as Nixon eventually learns of the many benefits of using hemp, even turning Camp David into an experimental grow site. Highest recommendation!

By Christopher Hoare It would be unthinkable for me not to recommend this funny and wide ranging novel to readers, I have now read it three times and enjoyed it immensely - at each read. Most novels stay with one for a few days, sometimes a few hours, but the sparkling characters and their wacky adventures here have stayed in my mind for about six years.You might wonder at this, having seen this title for the first time, but I read an early manuscript draft in an online critique group and have always been one of those urging Scott to keep looking for publication and not letting rejections stand in his way. The book you see described here is the result of that persistence and you have an opportunity to buy a copy for yourself and learn why it has so many supporters. I admit to partisanship, but if you've seen my other online reviews you will know I don't offer praise easily.Having said that, I must admit that the scenario assumes an acquaintance with the Nixon years - even if only from the pages of the contemporary press - because the heroes and villains here and the twists of plot plunge the reader back into the atmosphere of the Swinging Sixties. You do not, however, need to be a historian - or even an American, which I'm not - to appreciate the wit of a novel that turns depressing litanies of real life debacles so hilariously on their heads. On the other hand, the wide ranging plot that harks back through nearly seventy years of nefarious back stabbing and political infighting cannot fail to present the reader with a familiarity of events that did actual harm to both American and Western society. The book is funny, but reading titles from the bibliography at the end will show the reader that the author has cauterized a lot of pain with the satire he wields.The story is set in the period of the Oil Embargo of the 70s, but in an alternate world where the Kennedy brothers were not assassinated, the Vietnam war didn't happen, and Nixon wins the presidential election of 1972 by beating Bobby's attempt at a second term. He learns of a novel way to beat the oil embargo, that rings a familiar bell in modern ears - to grow the energy and make an end run around the oil barons with methanol. To do this he hires on a zany team of young law graduates to both find out why this fuel's promise had been sabotaged after the Great Depression and to verify the banned plant that makes the project viable can actually fulfil its promise.The hi-jinks that follow lead to both Camp David and a go-go club in Paris's Place Pigale; through the White House and the Oval Office to a drug heavy rock session in a French chateau. The Energy Caper or Nixon In The Sky With Diamonds By John Frank I just heard it through the grapevine that this novel has been optioned for a film script. Anyone who has read this funny, exciting book understands why making a movie from this novel is such a great idea.The story rollicks unpredictably along and you come to love and recognize the characters as friends. There is a decidedly visual element to Mr. Morrison's writing that makes it come to High Definition life in my mind. For me a good novel is all about a great story, suspenseful plot, and lovable characters. The Energy Caper has all three. Besides all that I managed to learn a lot about the cultural context of the Nixon era and the historical facts about the advantages of national energy independence through Hemp production. The Energy Caper manages to be both witty and culturally important at the same moment.This book deserves your attention. I consider it a MUST READ and a great re-read! Enjoy. John
