It wasn't all that insightful; all of us of a certain age have undergone these challenges and more, but it was good to see that men have the same lack of confidence that women experience. The anonymity and ability to block a suitor without so much as a thank you seems a refuge for rudeness and lack of kindness. And, as a veteran of these sites, I am inspired to give one small piece of advice to men who undertake this method of meeting women. Many of you display at least one photo of your trophy catch. Women are not attracted to dead fish. I know you look on it as a point of honor and accomplishment (after all, you bested that great wriggling beast), but that bass or trout or salmon is not going to win your lady love. Lose the fish.

Thus far, I am at the part where, as quite an attractive, well -educated, classy, fun woman, I ..return from a Starbuck's meeting for coffee, only to find an email awaiting me asking if I feel I am ready for sex! This is a horrible process! THIS AUTHOR NAIL.ED IT.

Breakup Recover By myers25 I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Ok so this was not what I was expecting, I thought there would be a bit more story to go along with the blog post...Even though it wasn't what I expected I did enjoy the insight of the author. This is a journey many of us have taken in some shape, form, or fashion at some time in our life. It does read a little like a self-help book for overcoming a breakup but it's a little more than that. While there are the normal self-help platitudes throughout the book the author is working the steps right in front of us. We watch the author learn and grow over the course of a year. Learning to accept and love himself flaws and all.I thought this was a very realistic view of "breakup recovery". The doubting your self-worth, depression, random sex, thinking you might get back together... Bottom line it takes time to get over a meaningful relationship and there are stages of recovery the key is not to stall and become bitter...

Blog posts compiled into a book By Silly Billy I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review. If I understood the beginning of this book correctly, it is a compilation of blog posts written by the author during a trying time in his life. It definitely reads like a blog, each chapter is a day's entry summarizing the revelations he had that day. I found most of the entries to be interesting, and I liked reflecting over what he mentions and trying to apply it to my own life.In all honesty, I thought this was going to be something like a memoir detailing the post-break-up part of the author's life. Not even close. It was more like a self-help book where the author gives you advice on what he has learned while reflecting over his life and relationship. This is not what I was looking for, which may have contributed to a lower star rating. I also felt like the paragraphs and chapters were repetitive, and I really can't tell you a chapter that stood out because of this (they all seemed the same to me).

Therapeutic blogging By n1ght0wl I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. The book details the journey of the author navigating the ups and downs of life and personal growth. As the story progresses we see where the MC and Eric's relationship went wrong, the thoughts and relations with individuals in his life. The pitfalls of dating. How blogging and therapy helped him to get to know himself better. There wasn't anything in particular that really stood out to me in the book. I did think there was a bit of a stereotype against gay individuals in the story but that might have just been how I interpreted it. I liked that the MC seemed to see both sides of an issues. I also liked that he got to see himself and what issues he had.

Melissa and Jerry were the typical American couple. They worked hard and were raising three young boys. They lived in a community steeped in Southern tradition and rich with family values. They were young, in love and had everything to look forward to…….that is until tragedy struck. Shortly after their third child was born, Melissa was diagnosed with Cancer. As if Melissa's illness wasn't enough for this picture-perfect couple to endure, disturbing family secrets started to unravel and the nightmare began! And, even with the shocking discoveries, emotional torment, and the innocent lives of children at stake put aside, Melissa's Cancer continues to be upstaged by her family's drama. A story of betrayal and deceit, as recounted by Jerry's sister, Alison, Hello Cancer! I Want A Divorce, is a compelling recollection of how tragedy can often bring families together…….but in the worst of cases, it can also tear them apart.

The raw emotion comes right off the pages - even though this is a work of fiction, this author must have experienced similar events. You can hear it in her descriptions! I didn't want to put it down! There were times I cried, and times I wanted to find some of these characters and smack them! Again, I know it's fiction, but it felt real. It is a sad story, but also a real story of family struggle, pain and enduring love; the differences between the families illustrate two opposite ends of the spectrum. I know which family I would want as my own! Buy this book!Tiffany

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hell on earth By Doug and Jen This book was clearly a spewing of details from a frustrating time in the life of a passionate, fiercely family oriented, compassionate, sister, aunt and daughter. I wanted to come thru the many pages of deceit to help rid Alison's family of advantages being taken and the lies that seemed to come natural from her brother Jerry's in-laws. Anybody can be a relation, it takes someone special to be family.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed the story from beginning to end By Karen Enjoyed the story from beginning to end. It felt like I was living with this family, going though what they were all going though. Twists & turns, thinking you know where the story is going and then something different happens. Very enjoyable reading.

Getting old is not for sissies. But as Brian Crane’s crotchety but endearing seniors Earl and Opal Pickles do it, it can be humorous and often touching. For over twenty-five years, Crane’s comic strip, Pickles, has been delighting readers around the world. This seventh collection continues the adventures of grandparents Earl and Opal; their precocious grandson, Nelson; quirky family members and friends; and the family’s dog and cat, who offer their own distinctive views of the goings-on. Crane’s view of the foibles of a long-married, often cantankerous couple and their extended family and friends is wry, honest, and always warm-hearted.

25 Years of Pickles, by Brian Crane

Review "The logic of Earl. That's my favorite part of Pickles. Or maybe it's the straight talk of Opal. OR the naivete of Nelson. Hard to choose. It's certainly not the fact that the older I get, the more I recognize myself in Pickles."—Rick Kirkman, co-creator of Baby Blues"Pickles is one of my all-time favorite comic strips, and Brian Crane is one of my all-time favorite cartoonists. Pickles is original, funny, fresh . . . nice without being corny, warm without being sappy. I don't know how he does it day after day. There is something for everyone here . . . I don't know anyone, of any age, who doesn't love Pickles. It's an honor to share the funny pages with such a great strip."—Jan Eliot, creator of the comic strip Stone Soup"Pickles creator, Brian Crane, entertains us with recognizable and sympathetic characters we all can relate to. We all have an 'Earl and Opal' in our extended families, and Brian brings out the humor of their relationship without resorting to the trite and obvious. And I love it when the dog gets the last word . . . life as it should be."—Jean Schulz, founder of the Charles M. Schulz Museum

About the Author For twenty-five years, Brian Crane's comic strip, Pickles, has been delighting readers around the world. He lives in Sparks, Nevada, with his wife. They are the proud parents of seven children and thirteen grandchildren.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. SLOPPY EDITING RUINS THIS ANTHOLOGY By Jim First of all, I have to tell you that "Pickles" has been my favorite comic strip for years. I have bought all of the previous anthologies and enjoyed them all. I especially looked forward to this one as a "collector's item." But I was deeply disappointed in this book. For example, a series of the daily strips sets up a story where the daughter and child are in imminent danger of a bear attack. But then it STOPS, without including the panels that resolve the conflict. Toward the end of the book, a number of the daily strips are REPEATED! Maybe the editors needed to fill extra pages and thought we wouldn't notice. I did. And I regret having spent my money on such a sloppily edited product. Cartoonist Brian Crane deserved more..And so did I.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Pickles is one of my favorite cartoons. I find that I am a lot ... By Roger Farnham Pickles is one of my favorite cartoons. I find that I am a lot like Earl. This collection is loaded with laughs and is, in my opinion, worth buying. The only caveat is that there are about a half-dozen duplicate cartoons in the last part of the book. Not a big deal, but disappointing.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Excellent collection, marred at the end by repeats By Columba Up until the last dozen pages or so, this is a wonderful collection of the Pickles cartoons. However, toward the end, the cartoon strips begin repeating, first just one repeat in a page of new strips, then multiple strips on other pages, and finally an entire page and a half at the very end. This is very disappointing. Maybe I received a copy that went through the printer too soon and was later recalled and reprinted, or maybe it just wasn't edited very well in the rush to publication.

Buddhism for Couples: A Calm Approach to Relationships, by Sarah Napthali

Review “Romance and spirituality are the two areas where idealistic fantasies are most notoriously dangerous. The antidote is precisely this kind of down-to-earth approach. For Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, this level-headed, good-hearted book is a useful guide to the clear-eyed sanity that can make a happy relationship possible.”—Dean Sluyter, author of Natural Meditation: A Guide to Effortless Meditative Practice“Buddhism for Couples should be required reading for couples contemplating long-term relationships—and would be a good wedding present! This book brings clarity to the limits of what we can expect from our partner in a relationship.”—Joseph Emet, award-winning author of Buddha’s Book of Sleep, Buddha’s Book of Stress Reduction, and Buddha’s Book of Meditation

About the Author In a domestic partnership for nearly twenty years, Sarah Napthali is the mother of two teenage boys and a long-term practitioner of Buddhist teachings. She is the author of several parenting books, including the bestselling Buddhism for Mothers, which has been translated into ten languages to date.

A real estate agent is conducting a small group tour through a cluster of attractive homes in a recently constructed suburb. After half an hour or so, there is uniform excitement among the group members, who are all impressed with these spacious, modern houses set in carefully manicured gardens. The homes are even in the right price range for most of the group and all feel the elation of being close to finding the right home after a lengthy search. “There is a catch, though,” says the agent.  Hearts collectively sink.   “These homes are built on reclaimed swamp, so about half of them will eventually sink completely into the mud. It will take a few years, though.”   “You can’t be serious,” says one of the women.   “I’m afraid I am. And I should also add that an additional 20 percent of the remaining houses will sink quite far down into the mud without completely going under.”    “That’s outrageous!” cries one of the men. “Who in their right mind would buy one of these houses?”   The members of the group all return to their respective homes feeling angry and disappointed. Some decide to write formal letters of complaint to their local government, protesting that a scheme with such a high failure rate should even be allowed to exist.   Many an astute reader will have already guessed where I am headed with this tale of real estate woe. The statistics quoted in this scenario are roughly the same as those we hear about the success of modern- day marriage. Here is a rather mind- blowing sample of the proportion of marriages ending in divorce across the Western world:   • United States: 53 percent • Australia: 43 percent • United Kingdom: 47 percent • Germany: 49 percent • France: 55 percent • Belgium: 71 percent • Portugal: 68 percent1   For de facto relationships, separation rates are even higher, the world over.   These statistics capture only the marriages where couples were prepared to go through with a divorce, a procedure widely recognized as one of the most stressful experiences. This begs the question: how many of those not divorced are happily married? A study from the United States suggests that at any given time 20 percent of those still married are “in distress.” So an additional 20 percent of houses sink halfway into the mud without completely going under. At least such sinkage is not always permanent.   In the face of such a high failure rate, the lengths we all go to in order to find “the one” seem curious. Even those who have suffered a divorce remarry at a rate of 75 percent.3 Why do we keep signing up for this fate? One reason we often hear is that our quest is a biological drive: without two adults committed to child care, the species would not have thrived. Study after study does reveal, beyond all doubt, that a two- parent family is still the ideal arrangement for raising children.   So although this book may include some depressing stretches, such as most of this chapter (it does brighten up as it goes along), I would argue that knowledge is strength. If we are aware of the reality of what we have all got ourselves into, its pitfalls and traps, then we are in a position to prevent the worst. If we can use Buddhist teachings to reflect on the state of our relationship, then we can protect ourselves from that most stressful of events: relationship breakdown. Not that we are only interested in avoiding the worst: Buddhist teachings can also help strengthen our connection with our partner so that we experience more love and friendship.   Cultivating a Buddhist practice has required me to be honest about my own role in relationship problems. Couples therapists claim that most couples come to counseling in the hope that their partner will finally see their faults and change. In distressed couples, individuals typically blame each other and fail to see their own role in any problems. I remember asking a friend how she was finding the book she was reading on the topic of emotional intelligence. I could only laugh at her answer: “It’s fantastic, I’m really enjoying it,” she enthused. Then with a straight face she added, “There’s just SOOO much in it my husband could learn.”   It’s much easier to consider the faults in someone close to us than to see our own. As I have trawled through the literature on relationships, I, too, have found myself thinking, “I wish Tomek would read this.” I have even photocopied and bookmarked passages to show him the next time an issue arises. Meanwhile, I suspect I may have overlooked the message in the passages that relate to the parts of me I am reluctant to own up to, my shadow side.   Yet many a couples therapist tells us that while both partners play a part in causing problems, more often than we think it takes only one member of the couple to start making an effort before both benefit and change. I can certainly vouch for this phenomenon in my own relationship with Tomek.

Thank you Alex]The section on sex was, as the author said, a bit of a hodgepodge. Opposing ideas and suggestions culled from all over the place - although sex itself is a bit contradictory and EVERYONE has an opinion. That chapter was the least useful from my perspective, although it did offer several very interesting perspectives.Sometimes it felt as if the author had pulled a bunch of different things together to fill the chapters. Once or twice, I thought the connection to Buddhist principles was a bit forced. I'm changing my review however (thanks to Alex pointing out my error) and saying that I liked it and would recommend buying if the subject interests you. You may not agree with all you read here, but it will provide good food for thought and possibly good food for discussion with your "significant other."

Stories that inspire, entertain, and make you laugh ’til you pee. Plus martinis! And not just any-old-martinis—these ones were designed just for moms! These tales of Wonder, Woe and WTF?! share a little glimpse into the lives of other moms, who are a lot like you. Through their tales, we’re reminded to savour the little things (like capturing extra morning snuggles), to let go of the stresses (they won’t be in that unfortunate phase forever), and to be grateful for the laughs that the unexpected brings (because laughing is better than crying and it may be the only workout our abs get!). So shake up an easy-to-make martini, put your feet up (quickly, before the kids find you) and join us on our journey as we toast to the many clink-worthy moments that motherhood brings. It's the perfect type of book to be reading on and off when you are busy with little ones. The chapters are short, perfect for reading while nursing, pumping, waiting in the carpool line, while your toddler eats 3 bites, etc. As a first time mom, I really enjoyed the "Tales of Wonder" section. All the feels. The authors all have a unique story to tell, which keeps it interesting. The martini recipes at the end of each chapter are a fun touch. read. I didn't make any of them but they each relate back to the stories and are fun to read.My favorite story in this compilation was "Stealing Time" by Louise Gleeson. I cried, and then have been thinking about it ever since.Overall this book is a perfect read for a busy mom on the go who still wants to read a book. Highly recommend!

This book is not only hilarious, but it reminds me I'm not the only mom with crazy kids and a crazy life and in desperate need for a drink once the kids are in bed, This book does double duty because there are drink recipes IN THE BOOK. How cool is that?! It's the perfect combo for all of us exhausted moms who need a laugh and a martini at the end of a hard day.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Motherhood can drive you to drink (responsibly of course) By Renofolks I just finished this anthology of tales from the frontlines of motherhood. I received an advance reader copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The book’s basic premise is this: “Martinis and motherhood go hand in hand, but not in a drown- your-sorrows sort of way.” The book is a collection of over 30 short pieces by women who have experienced the highs and lows of parenting and survived to tell the tales. Each piece is followed by a martini (or mocktini) recipe and a celebratory toast. First, I have a confession to make. I did not sample any of the cocktail recipes. This was not due to any moral stand against imbibing (believe me, I enjoy a good martini just as much as the next gal). No, my utter failure to drink while reading was due to time constraints. I only had a week to read the book before writing this review and that is not enough time to sample 35+ cocktails! I do plan to go back and see what I missed.Back to the anthology. Martinis and Motherhood is a quick fun read that any mother can appreciate. There are all kinds of stories here: the wonder of childbirth, the messiness of toddlers, the challenges of parenting children who are different, the sadness of loss. I found myself nodding in recognition of so many of the experiences shared here. Some of the women’s tales made me laugh so hard that I had to …well, you mothers can fill in the blank. This is a great book to share with the other mothers in your lives: the bunko babes, the book club gals, the MOPS moms, the women in your weekly playgroup. I would recommend putting a copy in the baby shower gift basket, right next to the venerable copy of What to Expect. After all, every mother-to-be deserves a glimpse into her future—and she can enjoy the cocktails after baby arrives.

A Short Walk Home is a heartfelt and inspirational memoir of a father raising and ultimately losing a child to the neurological disorder adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Exploring the full extent to which a disease like ALD can shape and affect a life, as both David Cry and his family try to come to grips with the inevitable conclusion to their struggles, A Short Walk Home captures the helplessness and anger that every parent feels at being unable to save their children.Presented in prose both simple and true, A Short Walk Home shows us how to find peace and acceptance—at a time when we need it most. Drawn from the author’s personal experience, as well as years of working with individuals and families suffering from ALD, Cry's story is at once both very personal, and very accessible—a story of appreciating what you have, making the most of the time you have left, and finding solace in the face of grief.Contrasting sadness with hope, vulnerability with strength, and frustration with acceptance, A Short Walk Home demonstrates that grief, no matter how great, can give way to a greater understanding.

A Short Walk Home: With Love All Things Are Possible, by David Cry

Review “A Short Walk Home reaffirms the controlling truth of life: Love is the most powerful and enduring force we encounter. The story David Cry shares with us about losing a son reminds us all that love is the one essential needed to survive the most harrowing and hideous pain.” —Jim Axelrod, CBS News   “A Short Walk Home is that rare (true) story that is both completely devastating and supremely hopeful. The story of David and Jaymee and their boys is one that must be read, and then shared. We owe it to ourselves, and to our loved ones.” —J.K. Simmons, Academy Award-winning actor“A Short Walk Home is more than David's story of survival but rather an inspiring story of his triumph over the darkest moments with only faith, hope, and love as a companion. David has tirelessly dedicated his life to ending the tragic effects of ALD as well as offering hope to those suffering.” —Chef John Besh, owner, The Besh Restaurant Group   “I've heard it said, ‘Pain is the precursor to change!’ David and Jaymee have suffered excruciating pain on every level possible and because of that pain, they are now changing the world!”—Heath Evans, analyst, NFL Network and Super Bowl XLIV Champion   “A Short Walk Home is a testament to love, devotion, and the grit and resolve it takes to endure the unthinkable and emerge stronger and more committed than ever to each other, to a son's legacy, and to a cause that must be addressed now.”   —Karen Swensen, anchor, WWL-TV New Orleans

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. My name is David Cry. I live in Slidell, Louisiana, with my wife, Jaymee, and son Brennan. In 2011, when I began writing this book, this page was just that short, simple, and shallow. But now, having been to hell and back, it would seem appropriate to alter my introduction to you, to this book. So: My name is David Cry. I am a husband to Jaymee, a lady with more courage and bravery than I have ever experienced. She has (now) lost five close family members, including a son and a father, to adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It has not been easy; each time, it has taken a unique and personal toll. Yet despite this, Jaymee remains the warmest and most loving woman alive. She is an incredible wife, and a wonderful mother. I believe that our coming together and starting a family was an act of fate; that God decided David Cry should marry Jaymee Godfrey, and that together they would be tested at every turn. And through it all, our resolve for life and our love for one another have only been strengthened. In addition to being a husband, I was and am a proud father. Although my son Logan was not mine biologically, I did my best to love him as though he were. We had difficulties—the normal things that occur when families blend. In my heart, I know that Logan did not deserve what happened to him. I had to watch as ALD stripped away the little boy I knew, but despite that, I will always remember the child he was before: a loving kid, always quick with a smile, a hug, or a nuzzle. I miss him daily, and those feelings will never end.I am also the father of Brennan, who will be 7 when this book comes out. Brennan is an incredible kid. He was screened for ALD before being implanted in Jaymee, and knowing that the same disease that took his brother will not affect him is an enormous relief. Brennan is highly intelligent, just like my father was. In fact, they share so many similar characteristics that at times it feels bizarre. The main question I have asked myself since Brennan was 2 is: How does one maintain with a child who is more intelligent than his own parents? Brennan continues to challenge us daily. His ability to set goals and follow through on his plans is remarkable, particularly for someone his age. We can already see that he has what it takes to accomplish whatever he chooses. He shows love abundantly, and cares for others. We have been very blessed by his existence.I hope that, as you walk along the path of this book and its story, you will be mindful to suspend your disbelief. All that you will read occurred, and even more that I do not wish shared. The fact that we remain whole can be attributed to but one thing: love. Love that we give, and love that we receive—both have worked to sustain us. Ultimately, I believe that this growing closer together is what God intended for us all.Life has not, in my 46 years of ups and downs, ever appeared complicated. We all have good times and bad. The negative things that life contains challenge each of us. My hope is that, through reading the story of my son and my family, I am able to impart to you one lesson: “Getting through it” is but one aspect of our lives. Live happy. Love more. Life is an amazing journey. Never give up hope.—Excerpt from the Prologue by David Cry

By Allison Tapia This is an incredibly touching story all about what it's like to live, learn and love when your family has to overcome a deadly diagnoses and loss of a child. I laughed, I got angry and I cried like a baby. It was an emotional rollercoaster and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to read it. So many families (including my own) have similar stories of what life is like in the face of adversity and I take comfort in being able to learn from those alike experiences and to know that in the end there is still hope and love can prevail if you allow it to. If you have been dealt misfortune in your life like the families who have directly faced Adrenoleukodystrophy, I would encourage you to read this beautifully written story. Thank you, David, for sharing your story with the world!

Sometimes somebody might ask if you know so-and-so and you’re not quite sure if you have met them or not. David definitely doesn’t fall in that category as he makes an indelible impression on those he meets. One of the things that David did share about himself in the book which I can vouch for being true is that he likes to talk and he likes to talk fast. When I first met David about a year and half ago, he shared his story with me. It was difficult to fathom the painful experiences he’s had. {Spoiler alert} He told me in one sitting about his experience of having a disabling disease, meeting the love of his life through a foundation he started for people with ALD (adrenoleukodystrophy), gaining one son through marriage (Logan) and another son using cutting edge technology (Brennan), then within less than 2 weeks losing one of those sons, losing his Dad, and his Mom being diagnosed with breast cancer. Each and every one of those events could have been a novel in and of itself.Reading David’s book was like hearing his story again, however this time I could take it in more gradually and allow each event to really sink in. It was a poignant privilege to hear him describe what he was going through emotionally with each step of his journey. One of the things I like most about this book is its straight-forwardness. He doesn’t sugar-coat words to describe the harsh reality of what he and his family have been through. He thoughtfully reflects on what has happened to him in a way that affirms that he is a man of deep faith but without being preachy. The best part of this book is the repeated and insistent message of the importance of love. David Cry has looked death in the face and has returned with a simple message – love. Love unconditionally, love deeply and love always.Yes, I’m biased because I know David and his family. But I’m also an avid reader and book club founder. I can honestly tell you that this was a remarkable read. It’s brief, tender, and very deeply meaningful. And it leaves you knowing without a doubt that David absolutely loves and adores his wife Jaymee. (Read the book and you’ll see what I mean!)Thanks David for sharing your story with the world.

I laughed, cried, and just nodded in agreement as I struggle with the same disease in my family. I believe anyone would enjoy this book.

The Four Just Men, by Edgar Wallace

Review This fast-moving little story and its accomplished reader takes the theme of vigilante justice out of this current polished, slick, technology-dependent world and brings it back to a simpler, more black-and-white one. --Joanna Theiss, SoundCommentaryEdgar Wallace was one of the early thriller writers, known to us more from the movies than his books. In his Four Just Men series, the villains are four men who practise vigilante law. While their actions are outside the law, which one cannot approve of, there is a certain sympathy for their actions. Read with perfection by Bill Homewood, the first in the unabridged Naxos AudioBooks Classic Crime series of that title takes us to the London of 1905, where the police hunt four men determined to right wrong with violence. --Alide Kohlhaas, Seniors Review

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. so thrilling you don't say, 'What? Vigilantes?' By Jesse Kornbluth As Edgar Wallace tells it in his short novel, in the early years of the last century, this fearsome foursome --- George Manfred, Leon Gonsalez, Raymond Poiccart, and a man known simply as Thery --- assassinated the leader of the Servian Regicides, shot a "poet-philosopher" whose sick thinking corrupted a generation of young people, and hanged a leader of the French Army in the Place de la Concorde.Vigilantes? You can call them that. But they don't act like hate-filled zealots. The Four Just Man are civilized. They advise their targets they are guilty of crimes. They tell their targets to reform. They alert their targets to the date of their death. They even give their targets a final warning --- delivered in person. As the author notes, "The honesty of the Four was their most terrible characteristic." Honesty --- how thrilling. Now the Four Just Men have a new target: Philip Ramon, the Foreign Secretary of Great Britain. He is a public servant of unquestioned integrity with a conscience in working order. And yet he is about to commit a crime. A legal crime. But a crime nonetheless: His proposed legislation --- The Alien Extradition Act of 1905 --- would send a great Spanish social reformer, currently directing his followers from a safe perch in England, back to Spain. Once there, the corrupt government would kill him.No reasonable Brit wants this to happen. But the Four Just Men are not like those of us who read the newspapers and bitch. Because they believe Sir Philip is a good man with a single blind spot, they have sent word to him: Drop the bill, or die. Naturally, almost every policeman in London is assigned to protect Sir Philip. The question is: Are they up to the task? Can they even identify the Four Just Men?Very quickly you will get past the moral question --- terrorists? vigilantes? heroes? --- and find yourself lost in the whodunnit. And the howtheydunnit. You may even find yourself rooting for The Four Just Men.How does it end? Glad you asked. Edgar Wallace held a contest when he published this novel, offering 500 pounds --- not a small sum in 1905 --- for the correct answers to some esoteric questions about the ending. Several readers guessed the answers. Wallace lost money. Or did he? For Wallace hyped 'The Four Just Men' as if it were a new flavor of Coca Cola. He took out full-page newspaper ads, put posters on subways and buses, even advertised in the movies. The publicity launched his career. And Wallace went on to become the most famous writer in the world. He was quick --- he could write a novel in a weekend. He was good. And he was prolific: 175 books, 24 plays and countless articles. The only title known to the contemporary reader? "King Kong." Maybe you've heard of it.'We kill for justice,' claim the Four Just Men. On that morally uncertain but dramatically delicious boast rests the second of Edgar Wallace's titles that the world should remember --- and relish.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Four Just Men By Bradley L Kautz The Four Just Men is a mystery by Edgar Wallace, one of the most popular writers in England in the early 20th century. The self-named Four Just Men are vigilantes of a sort, traveling to various parts of the world to correct what they perceive as slights to justice. They are in the business of righting wrongs, fatally so.In the particular tale told by Wallace they are acting atypically. They are proclaiming their intent publically and being pro-active, i.e. they threaten to commit an act of murder on a certain high minister in the British government, should the government pursue what they perceive to be an unjust course of action. As Wallace's tale unfolds we see the history of the Four Just Men emerge and begin to understand the motives for their actions. Cases of curious deaths now find that there is a thread linking them. That the Four Just Men are murderers is not in doubt, but the cases in which they have acted to appear to be egregious miscarriages of justice. Perhaps there is a just purpose in their course of action.Wallace's tale is well-told. There is a steady level of suspense but crafted in such a way as to be reasonably plausible. The outcome is never clear until the tale's very end. And you'll have to read for yourself, because it is too good to give away in a review!

7 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Four Characterless Men By APRICOT If you are the Saint fans, you'll be also interested in "The Four Just Men". They are also a kind of "Modern Robin Hoods" who fight against the injustice beyond the reach of the Law. I read some Edgar Wallace's short stories before and they were splendid. This book is enjoyable, but not so good as I expected. Unlike the Saint, the Four Just Men lack outstanding indivisualities that attract readers. Indeed they are nondescript and distinguishable only by names. When more than one heros appear, they should display different characters or abilities.

This particular story drew me in from the first page, and I loved it immensely. Michael is so honorable and selfless that it's impossible not to get on his bandwagon for helping his chums from his childhood and improve their lot. His love for Starr is pure and selfless as well. I loved the read so much that I would tell my husband about it each day, and he got to where he'd ask me what happened next. The final several chapters we actually read to each other and savored the ending together. We've never done that with any other book. This one was that special. The proverbial "must read."

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Tiffany Simons This book is one of Grace Livingston Hill's best. I love the fact that Michael keeps his word about helping other "street kids" like himself. The romance eliment is subtle, but it's very powerful and touching.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Moving book, with wholesome romance and satisfying morale. By A Customer This book was really powerful. I am not a crier, but I found my emotions touched by this beautiful story. One can almost see the author's love for humankind shining through. The main character was a wonderful man, suitable for being a hero to any little boy. I think the author truly must have been inspired to write such a magnificent piece of literature. This book was so good, I wish that everybody could truly appreciate it like I do. I have several friends who have also discovered the beauty in this long-forgotten book. I am hoping to read more of this author

Convergence: Zero Hour Book Two, by Keith Giffen, Tony Bedard

About the Author Keith Giffen works waaaay too much, and frankly... it worries us. A true Renaissance man, Keith has provided either plotting, scripting, breakdowns, pencils, or any combination thereof for titles such as ALL-STAR COMICS, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, RAGMAN, CREEPER, LOBO, SUICIDE SQUAD, The Defenders, Hero Squared!, and, um... AMBUSH BUG. Most recently he's been involved with the weekly series 52 and COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS, as well as 52 AFTERMATH: THE FOUR HORSEMEN and MIDNIGHTER, plus a gazillion other things. We'd name even more projects, but we're really worried about cutting Terry Austin's bio short, which would be a real bummer.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A fun book with some great ties to 90s DC By alexi_m I picked this one up on Kindle for a good price. There are 5 two-part stories the same two-part structure. First part we are introduced to the character and the way life is and has been under the dome in the city of Metropolis, till suddenly a voice breaks down the dome. The second part follows our character taking on an enemy from a different city in the convergence world. Each story follows a different character during the time just before the zero-hour event in the mid-90s, they include Aquaman, Batman & Bat-Azrael, Supergirl Matrix, Steel Superman, and Green Lantern/Parallax.Now I understand that are some out here who weren't big fans of convergence and for myself I only read some of it, but I thought this idea for the tie-ins was both neat and simple. In this case, what are basically one-shots in double issues, these stories can be very fun and capture the moment of time in the 90s when these books came out, especially with the enemy each character has to take on. Now I would rank Supergirl Matrix as my favorite, just because it is really funny and includes long-lush hair Lex Luthor. I thought Shadow of the Bat and Aquaman were pretty good in their own way of capturing the city under Dome. Green Lantern/ Parallax is enjoyable in the way that ties-in really well with the Convergence events, but it has some great moments story. Now the art is pretty good for the most part, especially Shadow of the Bat, issue 1 but what really stands out in some of these is the coloring. Also the book includes some awesome back matter. However there is no mention of the other cities and worlds included in the bouts. That was very disappointing especially since this is how each comic started.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not a needed read, but can be fun in small doses By Shawn Winigman I picked up the companion books to the Convergence event to hopefully learn more about the upcoming DC titles that will spin out of the event. What I got was more in line with a book similar to DC vs. Marvel. Each story is told in two issues. The first issue traditionally giving a quick view of how the main character(s) are coping with the dome, followed by the second issue where combat occurs between the main character(s) and character(s) from other timelines/cities from other domes. Each book has followed a formula that has been relatively consistent.1) Main character(s) seen 1 year into living under the dome, functioning without powers.2) Entity that captured character(s) spends multiple panels giving a speech (identical to speech in Convergence when domes lifted).3) Main character(s) (traditionally) questions morality of destroying another city to preserve theirs.4) Other city attacks main character(s).5) Either the fight stops opting to be friends or someone is defeated leaving the main character(s) city ok.The one part I like about these books is seeing old characters or fringe characters again that haven’t been seen in decades. I just wish they weren’t so predictable and really gave us better background or development of the characters (there is a section in the end that gives a small explanation of the main character(s)).
