Close your eyes and picture September 16, 1914. A family member is murdered. What do you remember about the murder that day? This novel is about Alva C. “Tenil” Horr, who murdered his wife, Ida on that day in Danville, Illinois. Mr. Horr was arrested in August of the following year and swiftly tried the following month. He was sentence to Southern Illinois Penitentiary in Chester, Illinois for 25 years. He escaped from there in March of 1919. This novel is a time line of events before and after the murder. A great deal of effort has been taken to verify the sequence of events. The conversations that are illustrated in this novel are fictional. Some names have been changed. my family names have not. I do not mean to imply that I have written a novel about fictional characters. I have written a novel about real people who happen to live at a time somewhat removed from the present. Ida was my great aunt. She was born, Ida Meeker, October 10, 1879 in Bismark, Illinois. The pictures and documents illustrated in this novel help tell the story. This is Alva’s and Ida’s story, and also the story of a great many other individuals and families. There are many beginnings to Ida’s story. Born in one era, maturing in another, watching the century transform into the next, she was unaware of the changes it would bring to her life and the lives of many local residents in Danville, Illinois. In the life of every red-blooded American boy, there should be at least one super-good using horse, ideally one that the boy helped birth and raise. This animal should be a filly because the female of the species is smarter and more tractable than the male. With this being true, we must allow that beast to be endowed with a supernatural or mystic quality that makes her almost human. I have owned several members of the horse family in my life that could have been classified as a super horse. The most outstanding one was indeed a filly called Honey Gal, foaled and raised on the edge of the Sabine Riverbottom which is truly “God’s country.” Named Honey Gal before her birth, this filly became part and parcel of my childhood. As time passed, I did indeed find more and more times when I knew exactly what Honey Gal was thinking—and there were times when she reacted to what I was thinking before I even gave a verbal command. Perhaps she was only reacting to my body language, but I chose to believe, in my child’s mind, that she was actually listening to me think. Of course, in our superior farseeing adult wisdom, we all know that Honey Gal never spoke out loud to me. Nevertheless, we conversed in ways that a non-horse-lover cannot even imagine. Please allow me the privilege of believing that the Honey Gal that was part of Dubs life was the best companion, the best help with cattle and hogs that any boy ever possessed in that part of the Sabine Riverbottom. If an adult loses his or her childhood imagination, his or her quality of life is diminished. So, with that point made, herein Dub has a wolf-dog called Ring that he talks to and with. Also he now has a filly called Honey Gal that he and Ring both converse with. Relax and let your mind soar free from the steel trap of conventionality and enjoy the story.

Excellent guide to improve sperm count By Luke Shaw This book is really a great help for those family who are not lucky enough to have a baby even after lots of treatments. Often couples who are struggling to conceive seek out medical assistance such as IVF, but many would prefer to conceive naturally. This book proves that you can improve your sperm count naturally at home, without medical intervention and increase your chances of conceiving naturally. The 8 steps remedies mentioned in the book are really practical and easy to follow.

By Penelope Perez How to Improve Your Sperm Count...I think this is a very informative book that will be appreciated by all concerned. It has bravely discussed a topic that can be very sensitive for some men. However, it has been done in great taste and in an educational way too. The topics are all relevant and will be handy too. It has discussed how one will know if his sperm count is low and some ways on how he can improve it. I find the book very well explained.

We've been wanting to have a baby for quite sometime now and progress has been a little slow in that department. After getting ourselves checked it was determined that we were incompatible and that we each had something we needed to work on for us to make it work. Obviously this download is enough to tell you what I needed to do on my end. Karen's book has been a big help in terms of working on our present condition and I really appreciate the tips she has shared.

In this memoir, Maya Hope Kitwana exposes her truth; showing from the inside out what was required for her to survive her childhood nightmares. These nightmares no longer torment Maya Hope Kitwana. Her story provides a lighthouse for others who have suffered abuse. A way out to discover love. A strong word of caution-the material shared isn't for everyone. Maya's story is not just a recap of unflinching secrets. This is a graphic, yet fearless look at a woman's journey through rape, incest, and abandonment-and her movement toward hope, healing, intimacy, and love. Maya charts a course that is painful and powerful. This work is about secrets and rage. It is about honesty and revenge. Despair. Faith. Kindness. Over thirty years of silence is too long.

From Despair to Hope By Mary Hosmar In this memoir, Maya Hope Kitwana exposes the reader to a world many have not experienced and were probably unaware even existed. For thirty years Maya carried around secrets of childhood and adolescent secrets no person should have to endure. Ms Kitwana’s journey from secrecy to forgiveness to love makes compelling reading.Ms Kitwana’s purpose for writing this story was, first of all, to free herself from the past and if in doing so, one other person is helped, encouraged and cheered on, so much the better. This book does not carry with it the hallmarks of great writing. At times the story time-line can be confusing and the writing does not always flow smoothly, but this only serves to accentuates the raw emotions of the story. One does not think clearly when forced into situations beyond one’s control. This is a disturbing read and not for the faint of heart. But for those who have found themselves in similar situations, it is a beacon of hope.

By D B Carlyle Autism Explained, I can easily say I now understand a lot more about autism and the difficulties this would place upon the parents. This has got to be a terribly frustrating position to find oneself in. The book certainly helps you grasp the child's perspective and why they act the way they do. I don't have an autistic child but the advice I think is sound and well researched. A heart wrenching read but I am glad to understand this condition as it gets so much attention. This is another good book by Sara Elliott Price I found impressive. Her writing style is simple, comforting and never difficult to understand.

By Michelle This is a very well written book on a very sensitive and important topic. The author goes into detail with simple steps to work through to help you understand just exactly what is going on with your child. Communication is key with this disorder, and this book has an entire chapter outlining the best ways to do so. Autism should not be looked at as a road block, it should just be viewed as another way of life. Autistic children deserve the same chances at success as anyone else, and this book explains that well. I would like to thank the author for this book.

Learning about autism By Anne My close friend's little brother has autism and it has been tough for me to relate to some of the things she's told me about autism. I've been doing some research on the subject, and I came across this book, which has been a great resource so far. I'd say this book is particularly well-suited for the parent of a child with autism, but it's also a comprehensive source of information for people who are curious about the condition, like me. Highly recommended.

BLEAK HOUSE (Illustrated), by Charles Dickens

Amazon.com Review Bleak House is a satirical look at the Byzantine legal system in London as it consumes the minds and talents of the greedy and nearly destroys the lives of innocents--a contemporary tale indeed. Dickens's tale takes us from the foggy dank streets of London and the maze of the Inns of Court to the peaceful countryside of England. Likewise, the characters run from murderous villains to virtuous girls, from a devoted lover to a "fallen woman," all of whom are affected by a legal suit in which there will, of course, be no winner. The first-person narrative related by the orphan Esther is particularly sweet. The articulate reading by the acclaimed British actor Paul Scofield, whose distinctive broad English accent lends just the right degree of sonority and humor to the text, brings out the color in this classic social commentary disguised as a Victorian drama. However, to abridge Dickens is, well, a Dickensian task, the results of which make for a story in which the author's convoluted plot lines and twists of fate play out in what seems to be a fast-forward format. Listeners must pay close attention in order to keep up with the multiple narratives and cast of curious characters, including the memorable Inspector Bucket and Mr. Guppy. Fortunately, the publisher provides a partial list of characters on the inside jacket. (Running time: 3 hours; 2 cassettes)

From Library Journal Bleak House is such a natural for audio that it comes as no surprise to read in Peter Ackroyd's biography of Dickens that he himself read it aloud to Wilkie Collins and his own family. No matter how good he was as a readerAand he did go on to present public readings regularly after thisADickens could not have performed better than Robert Whitfield does here. With a motley cast of characters to challenge the skill of any narrator, his brilliant dramatizations range from a homeless street urchin to an arrogant barrister, from a canny old windbag to a high-minded heroine who deserves the happy ending Dickens affords her. Whitfield is also as persuasive as the indignant voice of the author himself, attacking both the injustice of the law and the cruel indifference of society. This may be one of the most Dickensian novels Dickens ever wrote. Highly recommended.AJo Carr, Sarasota, FL Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Novel by Charles Dickens, published serially in 1852-53 and in book form in 1853. Considered by some critics to be the author's best work, Bleak House is the story of several generations of the Jarndyce family who wait in vain to inherit money from a disputed fortune in the settlement of the lawsuit of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce. It is pointedly critical of England's Court of Chancery, in which cases could drag on through decades of convoluted legal maneuvering. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The Summit By Al Kitching It's a monster of a book, and that's not really a reference to the length necessarily (although at 900+ pages, you can't help but be a little daunted). Bleak House has big plans for you, it wants to grab you and shout at you and whisper at you and tell you ten thousand things all at once in dozens of different accents. It's a book, really it is, with a mission, and an appropriately large dollop of missionary zeal.Dickens was already a household name when he wrote it. He'd already cast his net far and wide over an increasingly eager audience (Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby had all garnered great praise for him, and Martin Chuzzlewit's extensive American episode - after his trip there in 1842 - had helped his popularity no end in the US). He was world famous. He had also just begun editing the weekly journal Household Words, a publication he hoped would help highlight the social injustices of the age. Bleak House is confident and furiously angry in many respects addressing, as it does, much of the same agenda that Household Words railed against week in week out.The plot centres on the interminable case of Jarndyce v Jarndyce, a years-old law suit creaking its way through Chancery (a reference to two cases: Day v Croft, a suit begun in 1838 and still being heard in 1854; and Jennings v Jennings, begun in 1798 and finally settled in, wait for it, 1878, although, as Dickens says in his Preface, 'if I wanted [more]...I could rain them on these pages, to the shame of a parsimonious public')."Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce drones on. This scarecrow of a suit has, in the course of time, become so complicated, that no man alive knows what it means. The parties to it understand it least; but it has been observed that no two Chancery lawyers can talk about it for five minutes, without coming to a total disagreement as to all the premises. Innumerable children have been born into the cause; innumerable young people have married into it; innumerable old people have died out of it. Scores of persons have deliriously found themselves made parties in Jarndyce and Jarndyce, without knowing how or why; whole families have inherited legendary hatreds with the suit. The little plaintiff or defendant, who was promised a new rocking-horse when Jarndyce and Jarndyce should be settled, has grown up, possessed himself of a real horse, and trotted away into the other world. Fair wards of court have faded into mothers and grand-mothers; a long procession of Chancellors has come in and gone out; the legion of bills in the suit have been transformed into mere bills of mortality; there are not three Jarndyces left upon the earth perhaps, since old Tom Jarndyce in despair blew his brains out at a coffee house in Chancery Lane, but Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce still drags its dreary length before the Court, perennially hopeless."Circling this legal colossus is a cast as memorable as any that Dickens assembled before or after. The demure and impassive Esther Summerson, a resilient young woman carefully uncovering her past; Lord and Lady Dedlock, landed gentry living in a shadow-filled mansion in rural Lincolnshire; the threatening and ultra-clever lawyer, Tulkinghorn; Jo, a wretched street boy; and a whole swathe of legal junkies, obsessed acolytes flitting around the Courts of Chancery and Lincoln's Inn Fields. Every one always mentions the characters in Dickens - ah! the characters! they say - but then, they're remarkable, and wonderfully realised. But, as the case drags on, things fall apart and the centre - definitely - cannot hold. When an affidavit is discovered amid the J v J papers, written in a sinister and familiar hand, Tulkinghorn's investigations kick off a series of events that lead down a mazey, dark path towards an unexpected conclusion. The plot becomes ever more labyrinthine and to help us shed some much needed light on the matter we get Inspector Bucket (great name) one of the earliest detectives in fiction. All is division in Bleak House. The Dedlocks and the suit's lawyers on one side, everybody else on the other. When the two sides meet (weighty social irony in use here) the sparks light up the dark corners of the filthy London streets and someone invariably comes off worse. This is where the anger creeps in. Creeps in? Nah, floods in. This is where Dickens's agenda falls into place like a guillotine and you wonder how he ever managed to get on the side of the Toffs six years later for A Tale of Two Cities:"Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead, Right Reverends and Wrong Reverends of every order. Dead, men and women, born with Heavenly compassion in your hearts. And dying thus around us, every day."There's humour though, in fact there are plenty of real laugh out loud moments. The moment when Lord Dedlock discovers that someone has the audacity to stand against him in the election and that he's - egad! - an 'industrialist', is a splendid attack on the baronet's smug pomposity.Narrative hops around from player to player, resting most often on a first-person account by Esther, who is the conscience of the story, but beyond her everybody gets a focus and story line, and the extended sequence of tying it all together, starting with the solving of the murder about 150 pages out, heralds a very satisfying series of dénouements. So, is it one of the best books ever written? I'm not at liberty to say, of course, that's a question I'll have to come back to in my dotage. Certainly, I can't think of anything to put in the negative column. Dickens is fastidious in his plotting, there's nothing he leaves unsaid. There's no filler here (an amazing thing to say you might think, but it's true), no dull chapters, no extensive flowery prose, no muttered 'get on with it' moments. He fulfils his obligations to his social concerns, he creates sympathy and antipathy where he requires it. The villain, Chancery, gets a roasting ... yet he has a surprise for everyone at the last. But, I am smitten with it, yes. I do think it's going to stay with me forever and - get this - I'm already looking forward to the re-read. I was blown away.

Dickens's best book, should be required reading for lawyers By the_lighthousekeeper This book is without a doubt as relevant now as it was when Dickens wrote it. In fact, its probably more so. As G.K. Chesterton said, when Dickens wrote this book, he had grown up. We have the civil courtroom as it really is, a grinding machine that breaks lives underneath it every day. We see the lawyers who feed off of all this human misery, and encourage their clients to wreck their lives while piously portraying themselves as upholders of the law. Of course, this book is about a lot more than just the law. One of the most amusing subplots involves various women involved in charity. As the character Mr. Jarndyce says, there are two kinds of people who do charitable work. Some accomplish a great deal, and make very little noise, and some make a great deal of noise, and accomplish nothing. Of course, most of the ones in this book are of the second catagory. The most memorable by far is Mrs. Jellybee, who obsesses over a colony in Africa while her own family falls apart around her. It's exactly like people today, who want to save the whales or free Tibet while people in their own neighborhoods starve. The characters in this book are excellent, and far more realistic than in most of Dickens's works. Mr. Jarndyce is the heroic father figure, but he is a real one, who tried to be kind and guide his family but can only watch helplessly while his nephew slowly destroys himself trying to overcome the court, which of course is impossible. Many people have had trouble with the character of Esther Summerson, and her relentless goodness and self-effacement. I think she is a fantastic character, and is Dickens's way of reinforcing the message of the book, that you need to find happiness in your own life, and things like lawsuits do nothing but destroy happiness and should be avoided. No one changes the world in this book. They just help those that they can and try to go on with their own lives. That's why this book shows a more mature view of Dickens. This is great reading for anyone, especially anyone involved in the law. Five Stars for this book!!

117 of 126 people found the following review helpful. Magnificent House. By sid1gen This is the second book by Dickens I have read so far, but it will not be the last. "Bleak House" is long, tightly plotted, wonderfully descriptive, and full of memorable characters. Dickens has written a vast story centered on the Jarndyce inheritance, and masterly manages the switches between third person omniscient narrator and first person limited narrator. His main character Esther never quite convinces me of her all-around goodness, but the novel is so well-written that I just took Esther as she was described and ran along with the story. In this book a poor boy (Jo) will be literally chased from places of refuge and thus provide Dickens with one of his most powerful ways to indict a system that was particularly cruel to children. Mr. Skimpole, pretending not to be interested in money; Mr. Jarndyce, generous and good; Richard, stupid and blind; the memorable Dedlocks, and My Lady Dedlock's secret being uncovered by the sinister Mr. Tulkinghorn; Mrs. Jellyby and her telescopic philanthropy; the Ironmaster described in Chapter 28, presenting quite a different view of industralization than that shown by Dickens in his next work, "Hard Times." Here is a veritable cosmos of people, neighbors, friends, enemies, lovers, rivals, sinners, and saints, and Dickens proves himself a true master at describing their lives and the environment they dwell in. There are landmark chapters: Chapter One must be the best description of a dismal city under attack by dismal weather and tightly tied by perfectly dismal laws, where the Lord Chancellor sits eternally in Lincoln's Inn Hall. Chapter 32 has one of the eeriest scenes ever written, with suspicious smoke, greasy and reeking, as a prelude to a grisly discovery. Chapter 47 is when Jo cannot "move along" anymore. This Norton Critical is perhaps the best edition of "Bleak House" so far: the footnotes help a lot, and the two Introductions are key to understanding the Law system at the time the action takes place, plus Dickens' interest in this particular topic. To round everything off, read also the criticism of our contemporaries, as well as that of Dickens' time. "Bleak House" is a long, complex novel that opens a window for us to another world. It is never boring and, appearances to the contrary, is not bleak. Enjoy.

Still the king of comics By Diego Cordoba King Features Syndicate, who distributed some of the greatest comic strips on Earth, turns a 100 this year. And to celebrate the event, the good folks at the Library Of American Comics bring us this volume with hundreds of strips and the whole story of King Features. For those who don’t know, it all started with a certain W. Randolph Hearst wanting to spend his money by buying out all the best writers, journalists and cartoonists from the competition, and publish the best-selling journals. You can see it on the Orson Welles film “Citizen Kane” that pretty much tells the whole story pretty accurately (for those who don’t like reading).Anyway, what we want to know here is how’s about the book, huh? Well, as with every LOAC book, it’s beautifully designed and packed of information and a large selection of strips. Don’t worry, the biggies are here too. Samples of Popeye, Bringing up father, Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant, Mandrake, The Phantom, Steve Canyon, Polly and her pals, the Katzenjammer Kids, Blondie, the Lone Ranger, Henry, Krazy Kat (phew), need I go on? King Features had the best strips, though getting all of them in a single book would be a daunting (if not impossible) task. Especially those form the early years, where strips could change in a couple of months or in the middle of their run. But we get the best known, and even some I had never heard of before like the surrealistic “The Squirrel Cage” by Gene Ahern (pre-dating Crumb’s Mr. Natural by more than three decades), the whimsical “Tippie” beautifully drawn by Edwina Dumm, and many toppers that haven’t been seen since, well, since they appeared in the papers back then.Since this is the whole story of King Features, it does go up to our days, so we get also the modern strips, some that still exist these days (though it’s the older ones I was most interested in). So we get Hi and Lois, Hagar the Horrible, Beetle Bailey, and more modern strips like Mutts, Zits, Shoe, etc. They are all here, folks, in a sturdy 300+ page hardcover book, printed on thick matt paper. So far it’s a winner. Now we get to the letdowns. Yawn, I’m kinda tired of saying this over and over again, but it’s still printed too small. Don’t get me wrong, the modern strips are even bigger than what they look like now in the papers, but the ones from the early years of the 20th century are sometimes impossible to read (I dare anyone to be able to read the daily strips of “Abie the Agent” the way they are printed here—I pulled out a magnifying glass and still couldn’t read ’em, as the letters are all smudged either from the bad printing, or the fact that they were reduced down so much). Back in the old days, these strips ran across all the paper, as broadsheets, five times larger than what you get here. I even have a suspicion that this book was meant to be printed at a larger size (maybe to one of their “champagne-sizes” as the Flash Gordon/Jungle Jim volumes), as even the accompanying text seems to be smaller than 9 pt. What gives? Did the publisher nix the idea, and say that it had to printed at a smaller size? I dunno, and really don’t care. It’s just that, fellas, it would’ve been so much cooler at a larger size (not only for us older readers, but so that the kids can see what they are missing today). That said, I love this book, and though I received it a couple of days ago, haven’t finished reading it, but am already halfway through. If only some of the strips within weren’t printed so small that you can’t even read what’s inside the word balloons (and it gets tiring straining your eyes after a while).By the way, didya notice that in the endpapers at the beginning of the book the Krazy Kat strip is printed twice?Other than that, I recommend it, even to guys like me who own other similar books. Some strips we’ve already seen reproduced countless times, but there are many I hadn’t seen before.

I enjoyed it so much I ordered a copy for a Christmas present for my sister. She has a hard time understanding the bible and Greg Laurie breaks it down and makes it simple to understand the stories. I also noticed that this is the same as the volume 1-3 book that he released previously through Esther. this edition has an additional 200 pages which covers some of the new testament. This book is sold out on Harvest's web site so I ordered it here.As far as the book is concerned, it is very nicely done. It has silver leaf on the edge of the paper, it very thick paper with a decorative watermark on each page and a blue silky ribbon is sewn in to keep track of where you stopped reading, I am bad about dog earring my pages-sorry purists! It has a material type binding that appears to be stitched but I am not sure. It would make a wonderful gift for someone who needs a little help understanding some of the stories and parables or just enjoy some light reading with a purpose.Highly recommend!

By Kevin Lintner Have you gone in for a job interview lately and feel like you were unable to connect properly with the interviewer and knew you weren't going to get the call to come back for a final interview? Have you ever tried to talk to someone you were romantically interested in and ended up alone or even worse with a fake phone number? Have you ever gone to a party or any other type of social gathering and couldn't strike up a good conversation with anyone so you ended up the person that sits alone and leaves early? What you may be missing is the the ability to develop a good rapport with others. What is rapport you ask?Rapport is a lost art. So much time is spent in emotionless chat rooms or surfing social media websites that face to face communication has become uncomfortable for many. Rapport is something that can happen instantly, like in a "we just clicked" situation. Or, rapport can be built slowly, like between leaders of a community and their constituents or new managers and their employees. Rapport is a comfortable feeling that any number of people involved in any type of situation share between them. It can be a romantic, business, or just a platonic friendship. "Rapport" by Gabriel Angelo can definitely help you learn the proper communication skills to develop an instant rapport between yourself and a prospective employer. It explains how to develop, sharpen, and put these skills to work for your advantage. It is very well written and should help open the doors for the reader when it comes to face to face communication.

I’ve been reading more and more books about how to build good, lasting relationships, of all types, and this book is definitely a good addition to my collection. It reminded me of the warm, inviting way that Dale Carnegie’s ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ is written and laid out. There are a lot of good examples, references and exercises included and it even breaks down building rapport in professional and personal situations, including romantic. And, who can’t use a little assistance in learning how to best navigate the love playing field? LolThis is a nice, quick read if you’re looking for something to give you some great tips on the go. It’s also nice to keep around for future reference. I bought mine for my phone and I know it will come in handy. Especially the section with the exercises. There’s a line that says “Do not fidget,” and it made me chuckle because I know that I do that far too often and it can be damaging to building solid rapport as Mr. Angelo points out. If you’re on this page, that means you must know you have some issues with rapport-building that you’d like to work out and I wholeheartedly recommend this one because it’s short and succinct. I didn’t have time to re-read Dale Carnegie’s book, so this was a great surprise find.
