If you love historical fiction you will love this book. Again we get insight into what it might have been like to live at the time of Nero just as we had received insight into the time around Christ's Resurrection from the first book in this series. David's wonderful style of writing is vivid and detailed into small nuances of day to day life. The premise of these books is thought provoking and challenges your imagination.

Your in-depth studies of Nero and Roman and British history is amazing. Your books show us a plausible and exciting way that God could have worked His will through the world and it's history. Every page of this thought provoking, mind expanding, inspiring and faith building book draws me into the story through the lives, hearts and emotions of the extraordinary characters we come to know so well. Good or evil, human or immortal even Angelic, they become very real for me. And I'm there too. Deep woods, smelly city or blazing infernos surrounding me. I look forward to light cool breezes and book three.

At the turn of the nineteenth century, a widespread migration took place as a result of British colonialism. This migration was known as the Indian diaspora. It was a time when millions of East Indians would jump ship and leave India to be taken as indentured laborers to the far corners of the world to Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, and the West Indies-Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, and Guyana. The circumstances that surrounded this for many of the migrants were poverty, famine, and hopelessness. In the case of those sailing to Trinidad, it was under the lure of “chenee dad”-the land where sugar flows. Bombay Kay Dulahin is a story beyond the grasp of the historians. It is one woman's journey of overcoming the unthinkable through a vision and a dream. She was the daughter of East Indian immigrants in the emerging cosmopolitan society of Trinidad and Tobago. Cast off into an arranged marriage at the age of sixteen and possessing no more than a first-grade education, her strength, courage, and passion drive her to keep her vision and dream of breaking social and gender norms. The book discusses traditional East Indian arranged marriages, the age-old Hindu caste-system structure and traditions. It is a story that shows there are no boundaries and borders when it comes to the resiliency of human endurance, passion, and a mother's unconditional love, ensuring that her loved ones and family are influenced positively for generations to come. A story about love, faith, and hope.

The Bride from Bombay: Bombay kay Dulahin, by Bhanmatee Sita Gobin

About the Author Born in an idyllic village on the east coast of Trinidad and Tobago, Bhanmatee Gobin belongs to a selected generation of university-educated East Indian women whose forefathers migrated from the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to the Caribbean as part of the Indian diaspora during the British taj rule. She is an educator by training and has dedicated and devoted her life to teaching and inspiring minds. Bhanmatee Gobin hails from an era of transition when East Indians in the West were struggling to balance the cultural norms and traditions with the progressive Western ideologies. She is one of the few modern-day authorities on the authentic East Indian experience in Trinidad and the West Indies through language, arts, music, and cultural traditions. She has lived in the United States for the past thirty years, where she has continued her career as an educator. This crossing of the Atlantic Ocean has given her a true and unique immigrant's perspective into life in the West. This experience has given her the inspiration to return to her roots through her debut literary piece, Bombay Kay Dulahin, a captivating historical memoir.

The Triumph of Indian Diaspora as exemplified by a mother's love By Arjoon Singh The writer gives an accurate account of an Indo-Trinidadian family life, the village life, and cultural and social norms where the matriarch of one family valued education. She struggled and maintained a persona that is unparallelled in the village's history. Her warm, caring, and humble personality made her truly the heroine of the village. It really did not take a village to raise her 14 children, but her determination, sacrifice, and a vision of a better world for her children.Bombay kay Dulahin is a must read for anyone who is interested in Trinidad folklore, village unity, and one woman's gumption to survive by preserving her ethnic identity in a multicultural pluralistic society. Kudos to the author for reliving the good old days when there were no discrimination against race, and color and there were really "one love"

Good cultural read By sporty32 very interesting book.. did not know about east indians living in places such as the caribbean and upholding their culture..india is one of the most fascinating world civilations.. a good history lesson on the indian diasporathe author has a good command of the old english language and i had to look up some words in the dictionary.. if this is really based on a true story it was pretty amazing the sacrifices the main character made.. should be a movie script.. a good read for people that value their identities and their roots.Looking forward to moreFrom this author

After reading of the extraordinary strength and love for her children of Bombay Kay Dulahin I will henceforth think of the Caribbean island nation as 'TriniMom and Tobago.'

About the Author I taught schools, have lifetime teaching credential, and then retired, and then I got bored, so I opened a senior assisted living home. I ran it for twelve-and-a-half years. I live in Redding, California. I have four children and eleven grandchildren. I like reading, sewing, and making patchwork quilt. I'm retired again, so I wrote the book. And I seem to be getting bored again, so I am ready for life's next challenge.

Catholic recording artist and popular blogger Susan Bailey reveals in this personal and moving narrative how several major losses helped her rediscover creativity and faith. Filled with powerful insights on the presence and action of grace--in the Mass and sacraments, in nature, and even in grief--River of Grace guides readers to strengthen their faith during tough times and discover their own hidden gifts. In just a few years' time, Bailey experienced one challenge after another: the deaths of her father and mother, financial issues, the loss of her singing voice, and an empty nest. Using the rich imagery of a river of grace, Bailey relates how her devotion to the Eucharist inspired her to see Christ's presence in her life and helped her to trust again. Each chapter relates Bailey's experiences of loss and growth and features original activities and personal rituals that include everything from Joni Mitchell music videos and hot baths to imagery and uncooked spaghetti. These inspirational tools guide readers to reflect on their own experiences. Prayers and poetry are found throughout the book and a set of insightful reflection questions are placed at the end of each chapter.

Susan Bailey offers gentle reflections with graceful tools that bring light, creative renewal, and a fuller Christian life." --Rev. River of Grace is also a brilliant reflection on the connections between creativity and grace." --Amy Belding Brown, Author of Flight of the Sparrow"In this gentle book, Susan Bailey reminds us that every experience is awash in blessing. All we need to do is navigate the river of grace that flows through it to discover the meaning and possibility it offers." --Sr. Bridget Haase, O.S.U., Cohost of Spirit and Life"Susan Bailey's personal stories and her try-this-yourself suggestions remind readers to be gentle and patient with themselves in the aftermath of grief or loss. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A thought-provoking spiritual read By In the Bookcase Susan Bailey shares about the trials and triumphs in her life in her new book River of Grace. She tells how God's mercy has shown her a greater kind of essence, once she let herself glide along with His unending grace.A running theme that you learn all throughout this book is how creativity and spirituality go together, hand in hand. Susan illustrates this time and again. Susan pauses to personalize the reading and ask you how you can create new life in your surroundings as you allow the river of grace to run through you. In each chapter, she takes time (and allows you to take time) to reflect and focus on your emotions, thoughts, and defining events in your own life. If you take a few moments to perform the suggested activities, and allow creativity to lead the way, you will be blessed with fresh insight and positivity. For people struggling with grief, this book shows that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Freely, the author doles out the pain she encountered on the deaths of her parents, and how greatly her life changed under those circumstances. She then dispenses the successful tools and mental thought process behind obtaining victory over death. Triumph is available to anyone! This is not a story of how to get over grief fast -- but how to deal with it and give your afflictions to the Almighty. You will get through your time of sorrow, and when the grief cycle has ran its course, you will become a more complete person.Susan Bailey is an accomplished researcher of all things pertaining to American author Louisa May Alcott (Little Women). Myself, also being a reader of Miss Alcott's books, found joy in the way that Susan Bailey shares about her favorite authoress. Miss Alcott's books, which all exude child-like happiness, wedged themselves into Susan's soul and allowed her to identify parallels and discover herself again. It's funny how words that were penned over 100 years ago still create fresh currents in our minds and hearts; it can happen to any of us.And here's something else I gleaned: Susan and I are both Christians; Susan is a Catholic and I am not. Our religions may differ in actuality, but the similarities are so close. We both believe in God, and that's what counts. In fact, I never realized how closely that Protestant and Catholic Christians are... (You may wonder how I didn't realize this fact growing up -- as I do myself!). My point here is that Susan's writings will touch the reader, whether you believe the same way or not. I know she greatly affected me."The river of grace is in constant motion and only when I submit to that motion will I discover the many blessings that lie in the present moment. The longer I am in the river, the richer my life becomes..." (Susan Bailey, River of Grace)Lovely book. Many a person could benefit from reading it. It can guide you to a discovery of healing and of breaking free from darkness.Find the flood of God's mercy that flows within, by reading River of Grace by Susan Bailey. Thanks to the author and Netgalley for the free review copy.

By Careful Consumer This book is simultaneously soothing and challenging, encouraging the reader to move forward, but understanding of the many obstacles that could be in the way. The book will be just as useful to those who have not recently suffered a major loss as to those who have. There are exercises provided to help the reader move toward a deeper understanding of the divine. And while it may seem that nothing in today’s “one-size-fits-all” world really “fits all”, this book may just be one from which anyone who reads it will become more centered and gain something worthwhile. Treat yourself to this book, which is both calming and energizing . Extremely worthwhile and an easy read. Don't miss out. Most highly recommend.

A beautifully and gently written story, we are shown how loss in our lives can ultimately lead to positive change and the blossoming of creativity, positive outlook, and happiness. At the heart of this story and the messages of the book is a deeply spiritual connection which is both comforting and supportive. I loved this book! It comes with "flow lessons" which are meditative exercises matching with each chapter. There is also a CD that has a song for each chapter.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The best potty training guide!!! By Kevin J. Donaldson As a pediatric nurse & father of a 15 year old young man, the potty training methods in this book are priceless! I was surprised to learn that 50% of the world's children are potty trained by 1 year old (except in America). A child that can verbally express themselves will be the most successful with potty training (in my opinion), as communication is very important to executing the methods in this book. You will also learn:-The power of including your child in the potty selection process.-The importance of what food to stop, start and continue for best results during potty training.-potty seat vs. potty chair (PROS & CONS of both)-Inspirational: Principles of Success-Why accidents only add to learning and so much more....I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a little one that needs potty training and even all expecting parents should read it too. I will definitely recommend to all my patients 6 months and older! ;)“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” ~ Henry FordReviewed by Kevin J DonaldsonAuthor of 10 Secrets of the New Rich: How To Join The World's New Breed Of Millionaires

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Pretty informative, pretty clear By Kindle Customer Pretty informative, pretty clear. Had a few editorial issues but have found far worse in other potty training books. Wish it had more information on nap time and bedtime, but overall I thought it was a very helpful book and referred back to it several times.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Well written, did not work for me. By Matthew Michael Caron While the book was written in a clear, conversational style, a troubleshooting section in the form of "what if" would have been helpful. In the end, my twins were too willful for any of the methods in this book, and we had to employ one of the methods which the author frowns upon - bribery. Specifically, one child was easily motivated with M&M's, and, once he had taken to using the potty, the other wanted to do it too out of competition with his brother. Weaning the former off the M&M's is an easier trick than trying to convince him to use the potty by other methods. It also took several weekend attempts in order to ease in to it, which directly contradicts the "stick with it" advice. The first weekend, we tried to follow the book which led to a lot of crying and frustration. Then we backed off for a month. The second weekend, we ignored the book and used M&M's, and everything went much better. Again, then we backed off for a month. The third weekend, it basically was easy. He took to it quite easily because he was mentally prepared for what was happening.

This delightful book is a must-have book, perhaps to illustrate with our own photos. I could actually "see" the scenes and realized these are the gems of our lives, each dropping one by one into our lives, bringing joy and wisdom if we take notice. Jason has taken notice and helped up to do the same.

Elizabeth is both heartbroken and overjoyed when she finds she’ll be watching over Daisy, the daughter she never got to meet. She’d like nothing more than to live with her little girl in paradise, and being a guardian is hard work. Will Elizabeth be reunited with her daughter, or forced to suffer in silence as she watches Daisy make mistakes that place her just out of Heaven’s reach? 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. watching her die By Rosemary rosiebear Pfeiffer This is part 5 in the life and death of Elizabeth and Daisy.Elizabeth is watching her daughter,Daisy now a young lady in love. But the object of her affections is not the boy she thinks he is. She falls in love with him and thinking that she is ready to be with him,she gives in on one night of sex, thinking that was the only way to keep him.Elizabeth has to deal with watching her daughter Daisy make the fatal mistake including the afternoon that they had to get married. Not only did Daisy get pregnant, gain a new husband, she got a very, controlling, cold, and unfeeling meddling mother in law.Although Elizabeth knows that she will soon be reunited with Daisy she must endure the pain of watching her daughter go through with this part of her life, she must remember, after all,it's part of the plan according to Peter. As the days get harder for Daisy, living with a cold and uncaring husband, and constant intruding from her mother in law,Elizabeth keeps sending her whispers of encouragement, telling Daisy that she is a wonderful and strong woman and does not deserve being treated this way....Daisy decides she must leave this awful place and goes back to her childhood home. The mother in law comes to pick her up to bring her back to that horrible life. Her husband,Victor is upset but not because he was hurt at her leaving him,but because she embarrassed the whole family. Daisy begins to defend herself and a fight ensues...Victor hits her and hits her hard....blood is everywhere. Victor feels guilty for what he has done, Daisy is in fear for hers and the baby's life,so she runs into the bathroom and curls up in the tub after Victor leaves. Elizabeth knows what is going to happen next in the life of Daisy, even though she knows how much she must suffer first...will it all be worth it in the end ????

I thought part one was super sad and depressing, but part five was a whole lot worse, at least for me.Elizabeth, still unable to help guide her daughter now that Daisy is older, watches as her daughter makes mistake after mistake, slowly moving towards a potential tragic ending. Although she tries and tries to change things, Elizabeth knows that the plan for her daughter is set in stone, and all she can do now is wait for the inevitable to happen.Diving for Pearls: part V actually brought back a lot of bad memories from my past. Other than Daisy's age, this part was a lot like my life 10 years ago. Victor reminded me of my now ex-husband, minus a couple of things. Victor's mother reminded me of basically how my ex mother-in-law was. And Daisy... well, she's a lot like me in this part of the story.Part five is heartbreaking, emotional, and painful to read. My heart hurts, and my mind is a swirl of memories brought forth by the story. But sometimes that can be a good thing. Facing the past and remembering what used to be and no longer is happens to be a bit therapeutic.I rate Diving for Pearls: Part V a very well-deserved five stars for making me get all emotional, once more, and for reminding me of what I endured and no longer have to suffer through now

Tear Jerker By Heidi Lynn Thank you for Melissa Storm for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review. As you all may know by know I am a very fond of Melissa’s writing and a huge fan of this series. I always look forward to the next installment. As we left the last book I could tell something bad was to happen. However, I thought it was to be worse than it actually was. So, I was happy with the outcome. Although, I think Daisy and Victor are way too young and immature this stage in their lives to be doing what they are doing. They are doing the most responsible thing they know how to do.However, what Victor’s Mom was doing was uncalled for and I did not appreciate it one bit!! She was rude and would come over all the time unannounced. She would put down Daisy left and right any chance she got. What really set me off was when she told her that Tina couldn’t come around anymore. That was her Mother Daisy exclaimed. According to Victor’s Mom Daisy’s Mother was dead. Who is that cold of a person to say that to someone?OMG major cliff hanger in this book that made my jaw DROP and tears form!!! I am in shock over this!!! BTW I do not like Victor!!!

A book of hilarious and ingenious comic drawings from the popular 30 Rock star and "World Champion" comedian Judah Friedlander, hailed by Tina Fey as "one of the all-time great weirdos." Most Americans know Judah Friedlander from his role as Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock and from appearances in films like American Splendor and The Wrestler. But long before he became a film and TV star and stand-up comic Friedlander drew stuff. Now, in this quirky, hilarious, and surprisingly profound collection of drawings, Friedlander shows a new side to his "terrifically entertaining" (New York Times) comedy. Whether imagining George Washington in Las Vegas, plastic surgery for imperfect triangles, and the Keystone Pipeline as a sex act, Friedlander's "Joodles" push boundaries as they explore the absurdities of American life, sex, and even history and human rights. If the Raindrops United is a milestone in the career of one of America's most inventive comedians.Praise for If the Raindrops United:"Judah has drawn a weird and funny book in the grand '70s tradition of B. Kliban! I think this book will probably fix the world."--Tina Fey"Some people meditate. Some people masturbate. But if you don't have the time or patience for either of those, I recommend reading If the Raindrops United to calm down, have a little laugh, or a big think."--Susan Sarandon"I've known Judah for many years and I still don't understand how his mind works, but it sure works. Seriously strange. Seriously funny. A National Treasure. Sadly, I need to get a restraining order against him."--Paul Giamatti"Judah thank you for writing a funny twisted book. It is such an easy read. Even dum dums like me can enjoy it!!! Buy this book."--Dave Attell"Judah's drawings are deceptively simple, yet they become more compelling with every page. His talent as an actor/writer/comedian is further conveyed in ANOTHER medium. He's a Quadruple Threat. He wears many hats. Literally."--Janeane Garofalo"Reading Judah Friedlander's new book is a lot like hanging out with Judah himself: occasionally baffling, frequently thought-provoking, but, most of all, consistently hilarious!"--Mick Foley"To compare Judah Friedlander to a great cartoonist like Jim Davis would be a compliment to Jim Davis."--Wyatt Cenac"Another hit from The World Champ tackling the signs and symbols you frequently question while dropping hot lava in your American Standard VorMax."--Eddie Huang

If the Raindrops United: Drawings and Cartoons, by Judah Friedlander

Review "No one has replaced the brilliance of The Far Side ... but Friedlander's skewed jokes evoke that landmark comic's better than any strip does today.... It's something of a surprise to find this new work so whimsical, sly and modest ... He creates little cracked worlds with a simple image and a few words."―The New York Times Book Review"Judah has drawn a weird and funny book in the grand '70s tradition of B. Kliban! I think this book will probably fix the world."―Tina Fey"Some people meditate. Some people masturbate. But if you don't have the time or patience for either of those, I recommend reading If the Raindrops United to calm down, have a little laugh, or a big think."―Susan Sarandon, Actor"I've known Judah for many years and I still don't understand how his mind works, but it sure works. Sadly, I need to get a restraining order against him."―Paul Giamatti, Actor"Another hit from The World Champ tackling the signs and symbols you frequently question while dropping hot lava in your American Standard VorMax."―Eddie Huang, Restauranteur, Chef, Food Personality and Writer"Judah thank you for writing a funny twisted book. One of the funniest and most insightful books ever drawn."―J.J. Abrams, Director, Producer, and Writer"Visual jokes that make you think.... Where [Friedlander's] stand-up sets jab at things like gentrification, sexism, and gun control, If the Raindrops United punches those same issues right in the gut."―Refinery29"Judah Friedlander is pretty amazing. Not only is he a brilliant comedian, karate world champion, and accomplished actor, but he's a very thoughtful guy. When he's not busy making people happy on stage and on screen, he's often putting some serious consideration into the woes of those around him. And luckily for us, all that humor and all that thoughtfulness is on display in his latest book If the Raindrops United."―The Interrobang"The book's drawings run the gamut between The Far Side and The New Yorker, offering plenty of belly laughs."―Bedford + Bowery

About the Author Judah Friedlander won international acclaim for his portrayal of Toby Radloff in the award-winning movie American Splendor. He was a series regular on the Emmy Award-winning 30 Rock for seven seasons (SAG Award for Best Ensemble). He can be seen in a cameo in Sharknado 2. He is the author of the bestselling instructional karate book How To Beat Up Anybody, featuring his photography and art work. In 2015, he will release a stand-up comedy album and a stand-up comedy documentary concert film. He lives in New York City.

By Wulfstan Warning, this is a very weird book- that will either make you go "huh?" or laugh yourself sick. Or perhaps both. Judah Friedlander is a comedy writer, but perhaps best known as TV writer Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock. He also wrote the satirical karate book "How To Beat Up Anybody." (I found that book rather more funny than this). The cartoons are reminiscent of the Far Side, so for those looking for more Gary Larson-type strangeness will likely enjoy this. For example, one page shows two buildings, one with a sign “Yoga” and the other “50 Dollar Cupcakes,” with the caption “Where to Meet Women in Manhattan". (New York is one of the most used subjects). “Goth Crayon Box" was hilarious. There's also a mini- story: “Gentrification Man,” a “superhero for the rich and overprivileged who “stands up for the rights of corporations.”Note that although Judah can be very funny, his art is there more to entertain than look nice.

By jb Bought as a gift for my Mormon brother in-law after seeing an interview with the author on The Daily Show, & without reading it myself. Bad idea. I thought it would be mostly social & political commentary cartoons like what they showed on the show. Perfect for my bro in-law's sense of humor. After he opened it on Christmas I got a text that said "Ummm...thanks?" w/ pics of explicit drawings of male & female genitalia from the book. I hope he didn't open it in front of the kids. And of course now he's saying his sister in-law sent him nude pics. Lol. The book seems really funny from what I saw on tv & online, but if you're planning to gift it, just be aware the nude drawings are in there so you can be considerate of your recipient.

In that case just draw it. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, well these drawings somehow are worth twice that. When you need a break from life just pick up this book and flip through a few pages. On the day that I received it I found that I was already half way through when I told myself that I needed to take a break and save some for another day. It's not a book that I see myself reading more than once but is a good conversation piece for visitors. (some PG-13 content). Maybe I'll take advantage of the insert your own drawings pages in the back of the book.

This was one she picked up. It's silly, funny and full of attitude. She says things such as "shut the hug up" and "fluff that guy".

Good Start By Amazon Customer I have a deep love for Alice and Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and The Brother Grimm's.This first issue of an on going series takes these elements and mixes in a heavy does of Grind-house style violence. This makes for a sick twisted take on fairy tales that appeals to me a lot. I found the twisted humor funny and the perverse level of violence quite fun. The artwork is what you expect to find in a fairy tale. It is vibrantly colorful and fantastical which only highlights the copious amounts of over the type violence portrayed. The only problem I found with this comic is the main protagonist Greta is a cardboard cut-out of a character who only commits acts of violence. She has no real substance to her yet. I hope that Skottie Young rounds out her character and gives her some depth in future issues. I see myself tiring of this comic fairly quickly if she does not.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't read this comic if you have an issue with cartoon blood, or violence, or pretty much if you're sensitive at all. By Bridgett B. I got this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. The title had me intrigued, so I had to check it out. In this you meet Gert—a six year old girl who has been stuck in the magical world of Fairyland for thirty years and will hack and slash her way through anything to find her way back home. Join Gert and her giant battle-axe on a delightfully blood soaked journey to see who will survive the girl who HATES FAIRYLAND.This is not for kids!! I loved it it's fairyland meets blood and gore. Obviously, this sense of humor is NOT going to be for everyone. Myself, I thought everything about comic was hilarious. Don't read this comic if you have an issue with cartoon blood, or violence, or pretty much if you're sensitive at all. If you like dark and morbid humor then you'll love this.

As with every volume in this series, the story draws you in. As with every volume in this series, once I open it to that first page, I can not put it down until I reach the last page.My only complaint about this volume is that, like all the others, it is too short. I want more.

Dublin, 1963: When a German national is murdered just before President John F. Kennedy’s scheduled trip to Ireland, Lieutenant Albert Ryan, Directorate of Intelligence, is assigned the case. The German is the third foreigner to die within a few days, and Minister for Justice Charles Haughey wants the killing to end lest a shameful secret be exposed: The dead men were all Nazis granted asylum by the Irish government in the years following World War II.

A note from the killers is found on the dead German’s corpse, addressed to Colonel Otto Skorzeny, Hitler’s favorite commando, once called the most dangerous man in Europe. The note simply says: “We are coming for you.”

As Albert Ryan digs deeper into the case he discovers a network of former Nazis and collaborators. But as Ryan closes in on the killers, his loyalty is torn between country and conscience as he is forced to protect the very people he fought against twenty years before. Soon Ryan learns that while Skorzeny might be a dangerous ally, he is a deadly enemy.

“Ratlines is thrilling and historically informed.…Albert Ryan is a formidable yet damaged hero.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Amazon.com Review Q&A with Stuart Neville and James R. Benn

Q. In one sentence, tell us what Ratlines is all about.

A. Ratlines is about Dublin intelligence officer Albert Ryan, tasked with finding the killers of several Nazis granted sanctuary in Ireland after World War II.

Q. Ratlines is your first foray into historical fiction. What was the different about writing a novel so heavily based on historical characters? Did your research or writing process vary from earlier works?

A. The research process was entirely different for Ratlines than for any other novel I’ve written. With a present-day thriller, your research focuses on how things work; with a historical thriller, your focus is on how things were. For example, in my previous books, if I wanted to know how many rounds a Glock 17 can hold, I just downloaded the user manual from the manufacturer’s website. Or if I need to get the layout of a part of town right, I can use Google Maps.

Not so with Ratlines. Maps are of limited use because the layout of any given street can change, buildings can be renamed, and so on. There are events to get straight – for example, the Irish bus drivers’ strike of 1963 is referenced in the book, as is JFK’s visit to Ireland – but there are also societal issues to think about. For those, it really helped to talk to people who were around Dublin in the early 60s. For example, I described the book’s leading lady as wearing an off-the-shoulder dress in an early draft. Two beta readers pulled me up on that – such a dress would have been scandalous in 60s Ireland. Now she keeps her shoulders covered.

Q. Irish Justice Minister Charles Haughey is a real-life character who appears in Ratlines. What should American readers, and others who have not heard of him, know about Charles Haughey? It seems that Irish and English readers have a reaction to the name. Is there a comparable American politician that might help us Yanks put him in context?

A. Charles Haughey is probably the most controversial figure in 20th Century Irish politics. He was a charismatic man, loved by many, but also hated. He was Irish prime minister three times, but ended his career in scandal when decades of corruption were exposed. I guess the nearest equivalent in American politics I can think of is a cross between Richard Nixon and Joseph P Kennedy Sr.

Haughey was Minister for Justice at the time Ratlines is set, and as such was responsible for asylum seekers, including the Nazis and Axis collaborators who were in Ireland at the time. He’s also known to have had an strange love-hate relationship with the British. He had the hatred of Britain that one would expect from an ardent Irish republican like Haughey, but he also seemed to regard himself as part of some imagined aristocracy, despite his lowly background, and identified himself with the English gentry.

Q. Otto Skorzeny—a real-life scar-faced Nazi commando—also has a major role. I wonder if this larger-than-life character ever threatened to take over the story. He's a guy you couldn't make up.

A. Otto Skorzeny was a real-life Bond villain, and truly larger than life. He could very easily have been cartoonish, and I couldn’t help but play up some of his more theatrical quirks, including a fencing duel with the novel’s protagonist. He was really a gift of a character.

Q. Breton nationalists in Ireland? Who knew? Célestin Lainé is another remarkable, if unbalanced, real-life character. How did you find out about him, and are there still such guys living out their old age in Ireland?

A. I learned about Lainé initially through a documentary called Ireland’s Nazis by journalist Cathal O’Shannon. I dug further into him through Daniel Leach’s book, Fugitive Ireland, also about Nazis and Axis collaborators harboured by the Irish state. The Célestin Lainé in Ratlines is only very loosely based on the real life figure. When Lainé came to Ireland, he lived under his Breton name, Neven Henaff, but because the character in my book only really shares his history, I kept his original name. Similarly, the character of Catherine Beauchamp is based on Breton nationalist Francene Rozec, but only loosely, so I used one of her pen names for the book.

Q. Your previous books feature Jack Lennon, a Catholic detective in Northern Ireland. Ratlines features Albert Ryan, a Protestant cop in Dublin. What draws you to the outsider as main character?

A. That’s a difficult question, and it might take a psychologist to answer it properly! I guess one theory might be that the reader is always an outsider to the world they’re reading about, so it helps if the character whose eyes they’re seeing through is also an outsider. It allows them to move through the story in a more dispassionate way, with a more objective view. I’m not sure if that’s really true, though…

From Booklist Students of history and readers of historical-crime fiction are used to finding Nazis in the unlikeliest places—but Ireland? That’s one refuge many of us may have missed. It’s 1963, and Lieutenant Albert Ryan of the Directorate of Intelligence is tasked with solving a string of murders. The dead were all Nazis and collaborators, and on the eve of JFK’s presidential visit, their identities could prove embarrassing to his hosts. The investigation proves a minefield, with Ryan unsure whether he’s reporting to the minister of justice, Charles Haughey, or Otto Skorzeny, a renowned Nazi commando now living quite comfortably on the Emerald Isle (Slorzeny obviously has a personal interest in the case). Neville writes wonderfully, setting the scene in precise, economical prose; pitting well-defined, historically inspired characters in opposition to each other; and tangling the plotlines tantalizingly. If he goes astray at all, it’s after a gruesome plot turn that renders Ryan helpless, with nearly all of his subsequent action passive or reactive. With a character this strong, we want to see him fight to the finish. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Given the acclaim for Neville’s prize-winning Belfast Trilogy (Stolen Souls, 2011; Collusion, 2010; The Ghosts of Belfast, 2009), Soho is betting big on this one with a $150,000 marketing campaign, a national tour, and big pushes at BEA and ALA. --Keir Graff

Review "Ratlines is a belter: fast, furious, bloody and good" -- Ian Rankin "Stuart Neville's books just get better and better and Ratlines is simply superb. A shocking moment in history is the backdrop to a hugely gripping thriller" -- Mark Billingham "Wildly entertaining, Ratlines is a superb mystery but in addition, a spotlight on a slice of Irish history largely ignored. This is a complex mystery told in the exceptional style that Stuart Neville has made his own. Jameson and Nazis, Irish rebel songs and Charles Haughey, it's a bold and brilliant blend" -- Ken Bruen "Skilfully paced and absorbingly constructed, Ratlines is another carefully wrought, condemnatory blast of cold air aimed at Irish complacencies that makes for a cracking read" -- Siobhan Murphy Metro "Stunning... a first-rate story that seizes the imagination, and never lets go" -- Geoffrey Wansell Daily Mail

Kennedy is scheduled to visit Ireland. The book's premise may surprise the uninitiated: Nazi thugs found safe haven in Ireland after World War II. Among them was Otto Skorzeny, the infamous scar-faced commando and SS man who had previously enjoyed the hospitality of Franco in Spain and Peron in Argentina (it is even rumored that Skorzeny had an affair with Eva Peron). In 1959, Skorzeny purchased Martinstown House, a shooting lodge and farm in County Kildare.Irish officials are disconcerted to learn that someone is targeting former Nazis living in their country. If news of the murders were to become widely known, it would embarrass a government whose leaders welcomed anti-Semitic killers with open arms while "the bureaucrats at the Department of Justice did their best to block Jewish refugees [from] entering Ireland before and after the war." What did Irish nationalists have in common with Hitler's henchmen? Many Irishmen hated the British; the Germans promised that after England was defeated, Ireland would be free of her British rulers. The novel's hero, thirty-six year old Lieutenant Albert Ryan, works for the Directorate of Intelligence. At the behest of his boss, Ryan meets with Justice Charles J. Haughey, who orders him to identify and track down the perpetrators before they execute their main target, Otto Skorzeny. Ryan is conflicted. Why should he cooperate with Haughey in order to save the skin of a vicious war criminal? "Ratlines" refers to a secret network that served as an escape route for fleeing Germans after Hitler's defeat. Skorzeny is knowledgeable about the ratlines and has become filthy rich by siphoning off a portion of the money set aside to help his former compatriots.Neville's revelations about the link between Irish nationalists and the Nazis are eye-opening. It is shocking that in order to advance their own cause, some people turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by Hitler and his followers. If the author had written a tighter plot with more fleshed-out characters, this could have been a first-rate thriller. Unfortunately, Ryan, presumably a battle-hardened soldier, is at times passive and oblivious when he should be proactive and alert. During his investigation, Ryan encounters a beautiful woman, Celia Hume, who attracts his attention and lust (but can she be trusted?); Célestin Lainé, a Breton patriot and collaborator; Goran Weiss, an Israeli with his own agenda; and an avaricious Brit named Carter. As the narrative progresses, alliances shift, and Ryan must come up with a clever plan if he hopes to survive. Neville generates a fair amount of suspense and keeps us invested in the outcome, but his one-dimensional and thoroughly corrupt villains (many of whom revel in acts of cruelty and sadism) and somewhat disjointed plot keep "Ratlines" from earning a wholehearted recommendation. (Three and a half-stars rounded up to four for the informative history lesson.)

High This is an interesting story loosely based on the historical fact that Ireland became a sanctuary for German war criminals after World War II. Actually it became more of a temporary sanctuary for many of them, allowing them a way station to plot out and pay for their further escape and disappearance into the Americas. The relative simplicity of the process was threatened by various interested parties involving themselves for their own (and often conflicting) reasons. These parties included blustering members of the Irish Government, a Nazi "war hero", a paramilitary group, a lowly government agent, and the Mossad.Aside from the historical interest, I was mainly drawn in by the author's character development of the imperfect hero, Albert Ryan, the afore-mentioned Irish government agent. He was not portrayed as another James Bond but rather as a seasoned and experienced combat veteran who made the lateral move into government service and found himself physically challenged and not quite as smart as his oponents who played the game at a higher level. When was the last time you read about the hero getting the crap kicked out of him? Or being captured and tortured? All that being said, I was disappointed that there was no true conclusion to the story. In fact the ending appeared to set up another book to follow that would continue the story of our hero again facing the "de-Nazified" Nazi. Looking over the author's bibliography, it appears that he has written a previous series, so this would not be a surprise.

Stuart Neville belongs in the same roll call as Benjamin Black and the fine Quirke series, set in 1950s Dublin, the late Bartholomew Gill's masterful McGarr mysteries, and Adrian McKinty's promising new series set in 1980s Belfast. Lump in the usual suspects from Scotland (Rankin, MacBride, Mina, et.al.) and you'll understand what a fine book RATLINES truly is.Lieutenant Albert Ryan of the Directorate of Intelligence is seconded to Minister for Justice Charles Haughey (an historical character as are many others) to look into a series of murders of foreign nationals. All are tied in some form to Colonel Otto Skorzeny, the commando hero of Nazi Germany who counted, among his many exploits, the rescue of Mussolini in 1943.Ryan is an institutional man. A non-com who served in World War II in the British Army, despite the neutrality of the Republic of Ireland. When he finally leaves the Army in the 1950s he is out of sorts, until he is recruited by the Directorate of Intelligence. He continues to live a barracks existence, living meanly, and celibate. He is phlegmatic, practical, ruthless, and has no fear of bucking the status quo.If torture leaves you a bit squeamish then you would do well to avoid the book. The violence in this noir novel is not gratuitous though it is graphic. Celestine Laine, a Breton who threw in with the Nazis during the war in anticipation of true independence for Brittany, is a churlish satellite in Skorzeny's orbit, and a master of "enhanced interrogation."Ryan's investigation takes him into the world of Skorzeny, a gentleman farmer on 200 hundred acres. Ireland has become home to many of his former Nazi cohort. Skorzeny has access to a vast fortune and he uses that money to create ratlines, the escape routes for these not-so-ex-Nazis. Ryan's work takes him into the path of the Mossad and a violent cell of former SAS operatives who are stalking Skorzeny for a share of the money.Well-paced, thoroughly believable, with well-wrought characters and a strong sense of place and time, RATLINES is one of best mystery/thrillers I have read this year. The urgency of Ryan's investigation the anticipated visit of United States President John F. Kennedy to Ireland, and the fear that this spate of murders could result in the trip's cancellation. (There were many in our own government who did not want Kennedy visiting the land of his ancestors.) Parenthetically, this is the Dublin that was so dreary that it actually stood in for East Berlin in the movie "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold".The weaving of actual historical characters and the opportunity to either rewrite or slightly alter history adds to the book. As a young grammar school child I remember reading Skorzeny's autobiography, a chronicle of derring-do and bold commando raids. In RATLINES Skorzeny, though tough and capable, is a bit of a puffed-up propaganda job, busy burnishing his bona fides.A great novel in what I hope will grow into another "Belfast Trilogy."

On January 12, 2010, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country of Haiti. The world watched in horror the news reports of the devastation. Immediately responding to the catastrophe were Love A Child ministry founders Bobby and Sherry Burnette, who had somehow escaped death. In the days following, they came to believe they had been spared in order to minister to the desperate needs all around them. When the earthquake hit, Bobby and Sherry had served in Haiti for many years. Love Is Something You Do is the extraordinary narrative of the Burnettes' lifelong journey of faith and compassion. If you love a great story, find a place to settle in and read one fascinating account after another. Travel the path that led them to Haiti; a land of mountains, colorful cultures, and insightful proverbs, but also of extreme poverty, oppressive voodoo, and despair. Experience their early years in street ministry, their life-threatening adventures and accidents, their incidents of miraculous healings and financial provision, and their standoffs with witch doctors and evil spirits. Above all, be renewed by their message of hope and peace, through which they continue to transform people's lives spiritually, physically, educationally, and vocationally; giving Haitians a life of dignity and purpose they had never dreamed possible.

For that very reason I chose to review this particular book, that and the fact that I love Kevin Leman's style of writing, and no nonsense philosophy. When we marry and have a houseful of children we tend to think "what could go wrong, we are family?" But add in different personalities, hormones, misunderstandings, and opinions and you now have the recipe for potential relational melt downs. In this comprehensive book you will explore five days worth of food for thought and nuggets of encouragement. The chapter headings for your daily readings are as follows:Monday: Choose Your Words, Change Your Family. This chapter really hit home with me. I thoroughly enjoyed the reminder of how I set the tone of the family by the way I respond to situations.Tuesday: The big time, priorities, Activities, Work, and Finances. Another great chapter, to the point and direct loved the tips on what to do and not to do in these areas. We are extremely busy with homeschooling activities so keeping the balance of extracurricular activities is a must! I loved the family first mantra in this chapter.Wednesday: Navigating the Perfect Storm: Um... Yes please, can we say 12, 14 and 6. Perfect storm, enough said!Thursday: Why Dad Can't be Mom and Mom Can't be Dad. Great, simply great! I was raised in a single parent home so often times I parent from a completely different angle, not to mention trying to navigate what being a good wife is all about and how to please my dear sweet husband. This chapter was wonderful because it really lays out his and hers. I especially enjoyed reading over the Q and A section. makes you realize others deal with the same kinds of issues.Friday: Family Connections. Time together is a must in a deep and meaningful relationship, and often times our busy schedules prevent us from really connecting in an meaningful way.At the end there is also a section titled "Ask Dr. Leman, brilliant!Over all I would certainly recommend this book to families in all ages and stages. well written, it may take a little longer than Friday to change your attitude, (and possibly your families) but with a little determination and prayer, I know you can do it!"Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.Available at your favourite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group". - See more at: http://citygirlmovestothecountry-tanya.blogspot.ca/2014/09/book-review-have-happy-family-by-friday.html#sthash.za44Y4Mk.dpuf

Not every one is the same and emotions can cause problems. After all we are not all cut from the same cookie shape right? But don’t desperate because Dr. Kevin Leman has written a book to help you get a happier home within a week. Every member of a family plays a vital role in the health and happiness of a household. And the book Have a Happy Family by Friday will help your to improve life under the same roof.On Monday you will learn to choose your words in order to change your family. Essentially, what you says and how you say it has everything to do with how your loved ones respond. And trust me when I say that it is completely true. I have seen how my kids respond on how I say things and I definitively know how I personally respond depending on how things are said to me. So this chapter was a great reminder that I need to be careful on how I say things to my kids and even my husband.Tuesday is all about time, priorities, activities, work and finances. Bottom line you will learn what to do, what not to do, and why. This chapter was great and I did grab a few things but our family is already very careful in how much activities are done during a week. We do swimming on Wednesday afternoon and the kids have Awana on Thursday night. Every once in a while during the school year we will also have the homeschool coop. Our oldest son is also attending youth once a week. But apart from that we are very careful not to overschedule our calendar and prioritize the time as a family. Finances is also another thing we have been straightening up for the past few years.Wednesday I have learned how to navigate the teenage years with chaos. Oh! I know there will be though times but this chapter was wonderful to read for me as our oldest has turned 13 this year. His three siblings are slowly coming closer to this age and I hope that God will pour patience over me for the years to come.Thursday will be the day where you will read more about how your role as a mom/dad and your marriage can affect the family as well. Having attended numerous marriage conference and training since our engagement, we have continued to seek advices from various sources through the years.Friday will encourage your to make time together as a family and make lasting connections. After going through each of these chapters, the reader might have questions. Included in this book, you have a whole section titled Ask Dr. Leman where you can go through the days of the week and see topics and advices on communication and family dynamics, time/priorities/activities/work/finances, discipline and attitude, dad/mom/marriage, and family connection. Dr. Leman takes the time to answer specific questions and will encourage you at the same time. Finally, the book concludes with a whole chapter on the secrets of birth order for those who have not read the Birth Order book.I think that every family can benefit in reading this book. I even read some tidbits of it to my oldest son. I hope that one day my kids families will be joyful and thriving as the years go by. If you are tired of the bickering, the feelings being hurt, and the emotional exhaustion, this book might help you to turn your family around and transform it from the inside out.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hold on! Help is on the way! By Christian Fiction Addiction I have long appreciated the books penned by Dr. Kevin Leman, and "Have a Happy Family by Friday" is no exception! Dr. Leman is unafraid to tackle the hardest of subjects, and he does so with truth, godly wisdom, and a dash of humor thrown in as well. The book is easy to read, either in one sitting or one chapter at a time, and there is simply no excuse for any parent to say "well I just don't have time to read another parenting book!". The best part of the book is that it is just so very practical, with numerous real-life stories and situations woven throughout the chapters that provide situations parents will truly be able to relate to. No parent wants their family to feel like a war zone, with constant disrespect or bickering (whether between the parents or the children!). This book will give you some useful tools and strategies to implement with your own family, providing your children with a firm hand while still allowing their voice to be heard. One of my main takeaways from this book is a reminder of the importance of communication, whether between parents in the context of the marriage, between children who need to learn to "fight" in a respectful manner, or between the parents and children trying to navigate the different stages of the growing-up years. I also loved the "bonus" section dealing with birth order and the difference it makes to be a first born versus the middle child or the youngest in the family. That kind of information will help parents understand their children (and perhaps themselves too) with much more clarity. The "Ask Dr. Leman" section that looks at a wide variety of issues he has been questioned about over the years (everything from permissive parents to controlling dads, or how to deal with bickering siblings or grades that are slipping) is also incredibly informative."Have a Happy Family by Friday" is one of those books that I will be reading again...and again...and again. I highly recommend this helpful resource and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.
