It provides basic instructions on how to survive the retched happenings that happen in the world of minecraft. You'll learn how to obtain food, build cool stuff, and survive the first day! This is ideal for beginners, although for seasoned players you'll definitely learn something new as well. I recommend this to new minecraft players, hands down.

The Widow's Heart Sings unveils the "simple core truth" of God's heart-cry to Christians today as taught to Israel in former biblical times, concerning the fatherless and the widow. Miri Moriah shares from her own personal life experience: the burden of carrying an "orphan spirit" in her youth, of later becoming a widow with two babies at only thirty-one years of age--and her journey that years later led her to "rescuing" teenage Jewish orphans who were stranded without hope of future. Included in this Kindle version are a life-time of photographs (over 250) to help tell Miri's story. In these pages, Miri reveals the pain of learning how to cope with young widowhood while raising her fatherless children alone. She also testifies to the wonderful grace and power of God, to draw her little family "out of the ashes," into a future, a calling, and a purpose. Woven throughout this testimonial and scriptural overview, you will discover God's own wounded heart; His tender dealings in these last days with His very own beloved, the "widowed" Israel, who God has promised to restore again to Himself. This is the true story of a modern day witness to God's faithfulness--to defend, heal and restore every abandoned and grieving heart. He truly is a "Father to the fatherless," a "Husband to the widow." The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. Job 29:13 (KJV)

This devotional is to prompt you to process how you currently engage with God, your husband and your family (Yes, in that order). If your interaction is anything from the aforementioned, you are in serious trouble. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), nor should it reign within your home. The blessing of Proverbs 31 is that is provides a clear picture in how godly women should act. No filler- just straight truth. Now, some will scoff and say" this was way back in the Bible days, nobody does this; things have changed." This is certainly true - BUT, this does not excuse you from straying from God's command. My goal is for you to embrace your high calling as a wife, mother, lover, confidant, businesswoman, chef, manager, seamstress, maid, and care taker to unleash the divine power and blessings that Proverbs 31 has to offer. As I write this book for you, I also write it for myself.

By LHarrison I didn’t even know what Proverbs 31 was until reading this book, the author certainly does a fantastic job at purveying her beliefs in this book. I may not be on the same page as her but I can definitely feel her faith throughout her writings. It was a feel good read for me and I would recommend it to anyone that just needs a little uplifting.

Rome, 1635, and Grantville's diplomatic team, headed by Sharon Nichols, are making scant headway now it has become politically inexpedient for Pope Urban VIII to talk to them anymore. Sharon doesn't mind, she has a wedding to plan. Frank Stone has moved to Rome and is attempting to bring about the revolution one pizza at a time. Cardinal Borja is gathering votes to bring the Church's reformers to a halt in their tracks, on the orders of the King of Spain.

Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in the streets, shadowy agitators are stirring up trouble, and Spain's armies are massed across the border in the Kingdom of Naples, Cardinal Barberini wants the pamphleteers to stop slandering him, and it looks like it's going to be a long, hot summer. Except that Cardinal Borja has more ambitions than his masters in Madrid know about, and has the assistance of Spain's most notorious secret agent to bring about his sinister designs.

So I promised myself I would get these out of the library instead of buying them until I was satisfied Flint was back on form. He is almost there, and I have great hopes of The Baltic War. The main problem with this book is its wordiness. It consists of little more than people discussing diplomacy until about page 300, although the is the odd brawl. The last hundred or so pages are reasonably exciting, but I almost gave up before then. Luckily the diplomacy is reasonably interesting, and the historical research is okay. Unfortunately you have to get past sentences like, "He had done no more than skirt around the possibilities with the Count- Duke Olivares back in Madrid, discussing in generalities what might be done to bring a clearly difficult papacy to heel and remove a potential problem in the way of the strategy that Madrid was evolving to play Spain back in her rightful place as the chief is power in Christendom." This is probably the worst example, but what on earth were the editors doing. One or two of the characters are also beginning to wear a little thin. But the book still has some of the advantages of the original. The people are ordinary but placed in an extraordinary position, they're not geniuses or billionaires, they're not saving the human race, but trying to make the best of the situation they're in. They make ordinary everyday mistakes facing difficult problems. If the Baltic War has fewer words and more action, I'll be back to buying them.

Interesting but flawed alternate history in the 1632 universe By booksforabuck The West Virginians from 20th Century America have changed the course of European history, landing as they did smack in the middle of Germany during the Thirty Years War. They've smashed the Spanish Armies marching across Germany, and averted Hapsburg coups in Northern Italy, but their toughest goal has been to establish the idea of religious tolerance. For a miracle, the Pope seems inclined to let toleration rule--but the Spanish Cardinal Borja wants to bring the full power of the church onto the side of using force to compell the Catholic faith. The Americans in Rome can't believe that anyone would be stupid enough to try a military move against the Pope. First, the Spanish armies are needed in Naples, where unrest is everpresent. Second, using force against the Pope could splinter any hope for a Catholic alliance. Third, it could damage the relationship between the Spanish and Austrian branches of the Hapsburg family. Still, the Spanish are up to something and the American Ambasador's fiance does his best to find out what. The discovery that Cardinal Borja has hired a Spanish agent provacateur means that the danger is greater--but doesn't really explain what plans are under way--or what the Americans can do.Author Eric Flint and Andrew Dennis combine in another step in a remarkable alternate history series. Flint's vision of an entire community, led by a rabble-rousing union organizer with firmly democratic motives thrust into the past creates a different kind of alternate history. Rather than the 'great man' approach common in alternate history classics, Flint stresses the social aspects. Following in this path, the books in the series examine individual Americans making a difference in their own way. 1635: THE CANNON LAW continues with this approach. The basic concept remains solid, but since the first volume, the 1632 series has consistently fallen prey to long conversations with Americans telling each other what they already know and repeating themselves way too many times. 1635: THE CANNON LAW also suffered from its own problem--because the Americans cannot believe that Cardianal Borja will do anything as profoundly stupid as what he does, they don't do much to prepare for it. Nor do they do much else--other than wander around Rome, start soccer leagues, and plan for weddings and pregnancies. I understand that Flint wants to avoid the great man approach, but couldn't he have characters who are active, who have goals and who pursue them? In this story, Cardinal Borja is the active protagonist--the man with a plan. While we're given plenty of clues that he is a badguy (he looks down on others, etc.) it's hard not to be sympathetic to someone who's actually doing something rather than waiting around for someone else to act.The whole purpose of an alternate history story is to show how things would be different if something had happened--if Andrew Jackson had not been injured, for example, in Flint's RIVERS OF WAR. An alternate history based on the supposition that the Spanish were even more stupid than they really were doesn't really excite me.If you're hooked on this series, you'll want to grab this one. And it's certainly better than 1634: THE RAM REBELLION, but it falls a long way short of the best books in the series.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Starts slow, finishes storng. Better than the previous two books of the series. By Chip Hunter This book picks up where 1634: The Galileo Affair left off, with Frank and Giovanna starting up a Committee of Correspondence and Sharon Nichols heading up the United States of Europe's embassy in Rome. The primary focus of the book is the political machinations within the Catholic church, with Spanish cardinals led by Cardinal Borja attempting to disrupt the effectiveness of the USE-friendly Pope's reign. There are also the more personal stories of Sharon and Ruy's blossoming love and wedding plans, as well as Frank's initial exploits as a tavern owner and revolutionary. The book starts out rather slowly, not grabbing the reader's attention and not progressing towards any obvious conflict or resolution. On its own, the first half of the book was quite disappointing, I'd say a weak 3-star rating. Luckily, the second half of the book really picks up the pace and develops into a very dramatic and exciting finale. More up-timers become involved, including Tom and Rita Simpson and Sharon's father. War breaks out in Rome, finally providing some action to a series that has lacked substantial excitement in the last couple of books. Covert operations to pull allies out of the way of impending disaster, fully displaying the utility of up-time weapons, make for a great ending. The book concludes without wrapping up the situation in Rome, demanding that a sequel be published sometime soon.Overall, better than the previous couple of books and advances the story (at least in Italy) around the Ring of Fire. Recommended for fans of the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entry Level Discussion of the Creed By Steve Cavallaro In 1973 R.C. Sproul's first book, The Symbol, was published. It was an appropriate title, but not one that grabs attention. This book is now in its 4th edition, and has its 4th title. In 1982 it was released as Basic Training. And in 1998 it was released as Renewing Your Mind. It has been recently updated and released as What We Believe. This is probably the best title this volume has had because it goes straight to the point. The book is about the Apostles' Creed and therefore basic theology for Christians. While I have not read previous editions, which is surprising to me actually, this is not the same book. It is updated and interacts with some newer challenges and has contemporary illustrations. This book is very much what you expect from R.C. Sproul. He presents theology and philosophy (his undergraduate degree is in philosophy) in an understandable and interesting way. His purpose is revealed at the end of the first chapter: "The following chapters offer a contemporary explanation of its teaching- not to give a historical exposition of each point, but to apply its basic tenets to contemporary faith-issues."This means it is not an exhaustive book. It does not get into all the historical controversies that it addresses. This is an introductory book. This is not Herman Witsius' 2 volume work (my copy seems to be missing) or even Michael Horton's book We Believe. It isn't like Rooted by Cannata and Reitano with its missional focus either. This really is basic training. While I would be interested in many of the historical controversies the Creed addresses, not everyone is.In basic training, a drill sergeant will deconstruct you before building you into a soldier. This book, in some ways, seeks to deconstruct elements of a non-Christian world view to build up a Christian one.He begins with the words "I believe" to talk about what faith is. He talks about content, assent and faith. Faith is rational, not a leap into the existential dark. Saving faith looks to and delights in Christ. Faith is not superstition either, this is seen most clearly in suffering. Faith complicates life because it brings an ethical system with it. True faith will produce a changed life; an increasingly holy life. "To say that faith is reasonable is not to confuse faith with rationalism. Rationalism emphasizes the mind's ability to understand all reality without help."This is why R.C. says "Faith involves confessing more than professing; in the final analysis, it is a platform of commitment to the will of God." The content of our biblical faith should fill our minds and find a happy home in our hearts so we become more like Jesus.Faith is not faith in faith, but in God. Here Sproul stresses the need for content. He notes a rally by Louis Farrakhan where he was surrounded and applauded by a number of "Christian" pastors. The god Farrakhan believes in is incredibly different from the one "we" do. There is also existentialism's impact on Christian theology that drove it to liberalism and the Jesus Seminar nonsense that robbed theology of its content. From there he moves into how we can speak of God, and can't. He discusses the hidden God who is also the God revealed. In the midst of this he brings out Moby Dick, one of his favorite novels and the subject of his dissertation. "Our talk of him is legitimate because he has entered into the arena of human activity. We confess not only that there is a God, but that God can be known and that our knowledge of him can be meaningfully communicated."One of the challenges that comes up is creation. While he isn't pushing a 6 24-hour day creation, he focuses on our dignity as a result of creation. The other option is chaos, the loss of dignity and of values. God is both above creation (transcendent) and actively involved in creation (immanent) thus ruling out panentheism and deism respectively. He then moves into Jesus as the conclusive revelation of God. He briefly interacts with the contemporary attempts to remove Jesus from history or separate a historical Jesus from the church's theology of Jesus. He focuses on many of the names of Christ to reveal who He is.His chapter on the virgin birth addresses the challenges presented by the attack on miracles. He also defends the historic Christian view from the common rabbinic (and liberal) view that "alma" in Isaiah doesn't necessitate a virgin birth. The New Testament, however, clearly does teach that Mary was. "alma" doesn't exclude virginity, and Matthew's account clarifies it.One of the weak links in the book is the chapter on eschatology. He sticks closely to the Creed, but doesn't really address any of the evangelical views that in competition with one another. Perhaps this reflects his earlier lack of commitment to a millennial position. There are a few other places where I wish he would offer greater clarity. This is really a book for those who are new to their faith, or the Apostles' Creed. While not necessarily simplistic, Sproul is introducing concepts to people. More advanced readers will not be challenged enough. But it is one to keep on hand to help those younger in the faith.[I received a complimentary copy of the book for the purposes of review.)

Sproul is a household name among reformed evangelicals, and perhaps simply among evangelicals. For years, his books have encouraged, challenged, and at times provoked reformed and non-reformed believers alike. Whether readers are of Sproul’s theological persuasion or not, his works are valuable, rational, and clear. In this 4th edition of What We Believe, Sproul rereleases one of his foundational books on the basics of Christian doctrine. Formerly released as Renewing Your Mind, this work is a systematic and sequential walk through the Apostles’ Creed. As I read this book, I found myself encouraged by Sproul’s simple and clear handling of theological concepts such as faith, trinity, Christology, and the church. Since we were in the Christmas season as I read this, I particularly found Sproul’s treatment of the importance of the virgin birth of Christ and the proper view of Mary to be solid reminders of valuable truths.I also found this writing to be one of Sproul’s most gentle. He certainly does not compromise on any theological truth in the work. Yet, he is not riding any personal, theological hobby horses. For example, though Sproul’s eschatological views are strong enough for him to have written an entire book, he did not use this work to insert any of his nuances into the affirmation that Christ will return. What We Believe would make a fine book for use in Bible study, either home-based or Sunday School. It is simple, but the truths in this book are foundational. It is Sproul, so the occasional Latin phrase will work its way into the text, but the concepts are still quite readable and understandable for people who come to the book from a variety of backgrounds.Note: I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from the publisher.

Sproul is a significant Christian author who has produced important books of great value to the Church By Katie King When I had the chance to review R.C. Sproul’s What We Believe: Understanding and Confessing the Apostles’ Creed, I was excited to do so. I grew up in the Catholic church and have attended liturgical Protestant churches as an adult, both of which have recited the Apostles’ Creed with regularity. Our children’s catechism books have them memorize the Apostles’ Creed in the second grade, so this creed is regularly heard around our home. Still, I had questions. What exactly does “he (Jesus) descended into hell” mean? Why is Pontius Pilate mentioned when there are other people named in scripture as being significant to Jesus’ condemnation? What We Believe gave me a chance to examine these issues and more in greater depth. What We Believe is not a new book but is an updated version of Renewing Your Mind, which is an updated version of The Symbol, later known as Basic Training in the Christian Life. That’s a lot of versions! Whatever revisions have been done seem to have provided appropriate updates to the material. Each chapter starts with a modern vignette that introduces the topic, such as a transcript of a counseling session introducing the chapter which includes a discussion on guilt and forgiveness. The book progresses through each phrase of the Apostles’ Creed, beginning with a chapter on what “I believe” really means and concluding with a chapter including “the life everlasting,” the final phrase in the creed. Each chapter provides helpful exposition on the tenets of the Christian faith outlined in the creed. However, I found that each chapter then wandered into too wide a variety of topics that tangentially related to the phrase being examined. For example, the final chapter of “I believe…in forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, and life everlasting” meanders into why a particular Latin American theologian’s theology is not sound. While I fully admit that I currently have “pregnancy brain,” even with careful reading I often found myself confused as to why a topic was being briefly introduced, only to move on to another topic that seemed loosely related.Additionally, the book seems to end abruptly. I think the edition could have benefited greatly from a concluding chapter that ties up loose ends and provides summary thoughts on the wide variety of theology that is discussed in the creed.I was hopeful that this would be a book that we could use with our children as they learned the Apostles’ Creed or perhaps with newer believers who could use instruction on the basic beliefs of the faith. While some sections of the book could be pulled out for such a purpose, the academic tone and aforementioned wandering would not allow me to simply hand over the book to be read.I do write a critical review with some hesitancy, as I know that R.C. Sproul is a significant Christian author who has produced important books of great value to the Church. Indeed, I have read Sproul’s Knowing Scripture and benefited greatly. So while I do not particularly recommend What We Believe, I do encourage readers to explore some of Sproul’s other works.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------FTC Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review.

The Way We Live Now, by Anthony Trollope

Amazon.com Review Trollope's 1875 tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business, and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover (for whom she steals funds in order to elope) is a classic in the literature of money and a ripping good read as well.

Review "The Way We Live Now is the essence of Trollope. If he had written no other novel, it would have ensured his immortality."

From the Inside Flap 'Trollope did not write for posterity, ' observed Henry James. 'He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket.' Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, "The Way We Live Now is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and a bold indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. 'I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age, ' Trollope said. His story concerns Augustus Melmotte, a French swindler and scoundrel, and his daughter, to whom Felix Carbury, adored son of the authoress Lady Carbury, is induced to propose marriage for the sake of securing a fortune. Trollope knew well the difficulties of dealing with editors, publishers, reviewers, and the public; his portrait of Lady Carbury, impetuous, unprincipled, and unswervingly devoted to her own self-promotion, is one of his finest satirical achievements. His picture of late-nineteenth-century England is a portrait of a society on the verge of moral bankruptcy. In "The Way We Live Now Trollope combines his talents as a portraitist and his skills as a storyteller to give us life as it was lived more than a hundred years ago.

I consider it to be a tragedy that Anthony Trollope's works are largely forgotten and overlooked by the reading public. So many well-educated people have never even heard ot him, although his novels are some of the best representatives of what a good novel should be! His beautiful storytelling in "The Way We Live Now" is just another example of Trollope at his best. A master raconteur, his vivid descriptions and cutting satire make this work one of his most controversial (at least at the time) and indeed one of his most respected. Though his longest work, it certainly does not seem long because he keeps the reader on his toes, so much so, that he is dying to know what will happen next. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is the fact that it is difficult to find a character whom you can like. Each one, and there are many, has one or more particular faults, and we, as the readers, quickly realize that no one is perfect. Even the sympathetic characters are prejudiced at times. This, I believe, is a marked contrast to Dickensian personnages who much of the time are almost too angelic or cruel to be believable. Trollope give us a lesson in true human nature, one that will be very hard for me to forget.

By Mary Whipple Often considered Trollope's greatest novel, this satire of British life, written in 1875, leaves no aspect of society unexamined. Through his large cast of characters, who represent many levels of society, Trollope examines the hypocrisies of class, at the same time that he often develops sympathy for these characters who are sometimes caught in crises not of their own making. Filling the novel with realistic details and providing vivid pictures of the various settings in which the characters find themselves, Trollope also creates a series of exceptionally vibrant characters who give life to this long and sometimes cynical portrait of those who move the country.Lady Carbury, her innocent daughter Henrietta (Hetta), and her attractive but irresponsible son Felix are the family around which much of the action rotates. They are always in need of money and Lady Carbury writes pap novels to support the family (and Felix's drinking and gambling). In contrast to the Carburys, and just as important to the plot, are the Melmottes. Augustus Melmotte, who has come from Vienna under a cloud of financial suspicions, has acquired a huge estate for himself, his foreign wife, and his marriageable daughter. Boorish, but determined to become a leader of society, Melmotte provides moments of humor for the reader, though he is scorned by an aristocracy which is nevertheless beholden to him for his investments. When Paul Montague, a young businessman who has invested in a railroad in America, arrives in town, he finds himself in love with Hetta--and in competition with Roger Carbury for her hand. Felix courts the Melmottes' daughter for her fortune, and she falls in love with him while he dallies with a local domestic worker.Often addressing the reader directly, Trollope fills the novel with action and subplots which illustrate a wide variety of themes, often depicting his characters satirically to illustrate the social, political, and financial ills of the day. Ahead of his time for his depiction of the lively, intelligent woman whose role is defined (and limited) by her social and financial position, Trollope creates a number of resourceful women--and a number who are willing to do almost anything to marry a wealthy man. As is customary in Victorian novels, the good are rewarded here, and the evil are punished, but Trollope's characters, unlike those by Dickens, for example, usually control their own destinies. Broad in scope, thoughtful in construction, complete in its depiction of 1870s' England, filled with wonderful characters, and absolutely engrossing to read, The Way We Live Now is one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. It concerns greed, pursuit of position, and fraud in late 19th century London, but most of the story line reads as if it could have been set in 2008, during the financial scandals on Wall Street. There is even a Bernard Madoff type figure in the story. There is also a BBC/PBS adaptation available on DVD. It is also excellent, but necessarily lacks some of the richness of detail that we find in the book. I don't think of Tollope's books as page turners, but I got to a point where I didn't want to put this down. Perhaps in a few years the material won't seem as fresh, but right now it's very timely.

Summer 1643: England is at war with itself. King Charles I has fled London, his negotiations with Parliament in tatters. The country is consumed by bloodshed. For Thomas Hill, a man of letters quietly running a bookshop in the rural town of Romsey, knowledge of the war is limited to the rumours that reach the local inn.

When a stranger knocks on his door one night and informs him that the king's cryptographer has died, everything changes. Aware of Thomas' background as a mathematician and his expertise in codes and ciphers, the king has summoned him to his court in Oxford.

On arrival Thomas soon discovers that nothing at court is straightforward. There is evidence of a traitor in their midst. Brutal murder follows brutal murder. And when a vital message encrypted with a notoriously unbreakable code is intercepted, he must decipher it to reveal the king's betrayer and prevent the violent death that failure will surely bring.

The English Civil War has generally not been a popular setting within this genre so The King's Spy is very much to be welcomed. The book is set in 1643 when Charles I, having failed to succeed in negotiations with Parliament, has quit London and has set up his court in Oxford. When his cryptographer suddenly dies, the King needs a replacement and Thomas Hill, an Oxford mathematician and an expert on codes and ciphers, is recommended to him. Hill is not anxious to leave his widowed sister and her two young girls, or his Romsey bookshop in order to enter the King's service, but is eventually prevailed upon to do so and therefore travels to Oxford. He is catapulted into a world of intrigue and murder where little is really as it seems. With the body count mounting the heavy responsibility for cracking a secret despatch which has been intercepted and which was intended for the Parliamentarians, falls to Thomas. This is no mean feat as the message is encrypted with a code previously thought to be unbreakable. It seems that only Thomas can save the Cavalier cause! This is an exciting romp, the pace quite fast, with plenty of blood and romance on the way. The characters are well drawn and the historical background has clearly been researched in some detail. It gives the reader an excellent insight into the uneven impact of the Civil War on different parts of England. Often there is a paucity of information reaching the people of the country on the progress each side is making. If you like historical fiction you will enjoy this book.

This book was a real page turner that had me hooked from the onset. Our lead character a one Thomas Hill is a Royalist at heart - but very much also a pacifist, all he wanted was the English Civil War to pass him by without any involvement by him. This, however, all changed, when Friar Simon de Pointz knocked on his door one night, and told him that King Charles the first was summoning him, to his court in Oxford. There he was to serve as a cryptographer to his majesty, on the recommendation of his old friend and former tutor. The narrative is full of twists and turns, there are shocking in sights of the time in terms of the unsanitary environment, the poverty, common place murder, treachery and treason of the time.I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy, and hopefully learning more about the mysterious, and the characterization of the fascinating Friar Simon de Pointz, who was like a breath of fresh air in this.

Characters are well developed and the hero is sympathetic. Before I had finished the first chapter, I stopped and did a quick brush up on the English civil war. That was very helpful to keep events and historical players in mind. There is quite a bit on cryptanalysis including a rather extensive explanation on the Vigenere square. Personally, I found it interesting, but after a basic description, I skimmed the technical bits (with no damage to the plot). My one complaint, and it is major, is the extensive, detailed, repetitive, in-your-face descriptions of filth. I appreciate that it was part of the historical scene. I do. My feeling, however, is that it was overdone, dreary and unnecessary. An occasional reminder is sufficient. I won't be buying the next installment.

By Becca's Books Handle Me with Care by Helen J Rolfe is the first novel I've read by this author. Beforehand, I'd seen a fair few book-bloggers enthusing about it, so my interest was definitely piqued. When the author approached me in regards to reading and reviewing, I couldn't say yes fast enough. The blurb, coupled with such a gorgeous cover, enticed me completely, even more so when I realised that this wasn't going to be just any romance. The blurb hinted towards topics that would never offer the characters within an easy ride, but more than that, I really wanted to see how the characters would develop and grow throughout the novel, given their separate circumstances. Quite simply, it sounded to me like these characters were going to be put through their paces, which would only result in stronger people by the end of the novel. I couldn't wait to begin.Helen begins Handle Me with Care with a highly amusing scene which had me stifling my giggles with my hand. An avid baker, not only due to her obvious talents but also because it allows her to forget, Maddie delivers a risqué cake to a one-hundredth birthday party by mistake. Amongst the smirks and giggles, this is where she first sets eyes on Evan, and pretty much Maddie and Evan's beautiful story begins. I loved that Helen chose to open the book in such a fun, carefree way. In the throes of the birthday party, it was clear to me (and Maddie), that between she and Evan, there was an instant connection, almost like love at first sight. The glances and smiles reeled me in completely and it felt as though Maddie and Evan had created a bubble around themselves, no-one else included within it. I knew from this point that there was something special about these two, it was clear for everyone to see, including Evan's gran Jem, who insisted that they seemed just right for each other, and who also added so much warmth to this scene. With the party atmosphere, it was impossible for me not to be sucked into it all and revel in the new-found chemistry that was zipping between Evan and Maddie. I was incredibly eager to see where life would take these two characters, although I had an inkling that it wouldn't be a smooth ride for either of them.Helen's character development in Handle Me with Care was flawless. From beginning to end, watching Maddie and Evan change and grow, apart and together, was absolutely beautiful. Maddie was damaged, and quite understandably so. Since she'd lost the love of her life Riley in the 9/11 attacks, she'd kept her heart close and rather than get involved in any relationships which would put her at risk of deep loss once more, she'd chosen to stay casual whenever it came to romance. Considering what she'd went through, I really couldn't blame her. It was obvious that the loss of Riley had left Maddie with some horrific scars, scars that encouraged her to hold back whenever the idea of 'something more' happened to crop up. Helen did such an exquisite job of splaying Maddie's emotions out for me to get a good look at. Every feeling, every emotion, it all made perfect sense to me. I was able to understand Maddie's reasoning perfectly, could understand why she'd rather not become involved with anyone else, and it only made me love her more as a heroine. Her worries and fears were rational, and I couldn't help but to agree with how she felt about certain things. She was terrified, petrified even, of having the same thing happen to her again, and this shone through beautifully in the author's descriptions of Maddie's inner thoughts and feelings. She was such a complex character, scared and hidden away beneath her own personal armour that had been built by her past. There was nothing I wanted more than for Maddie to find her second chance, to be able to let the demons of her past go and learn to move on. I felt so connected to Helen's characters, so much so that by the end of this novel, I was reluctant to say goodbye to them. They were pure magic, perhaps a tad frustrating at times when fate continued to keep them apart, but wonderful nonetheless.Everything in this novel worked for me. The stunning Australian setting, the sparks and ribbons of chemistry that wrapped around Helen's heroine and hero, the barriers each of them had built up, and the sheer, emotional strength it took to take those barriers back down. It was more than a romance, it was a display of trust and courage, intimacy and belief, letting go and finally being able to move forward in life, despite what had gone before.I absolutely loved this novel. It was beautifully moving, with equally beautiful characters and descriptions that made this a truly special story. It's about taking chances, being brave and learning to love again, no matter how terrifying it may seem. Becca's Books is awarding Handle Me with Care by Helen J Rolfe with five gorgeous cupcakes! I really cannot wait to read more from Helen J Rolfe.

By Simona Elena *Book provided by the author in exchange for an honest review* The story follows Maddie. She's working as a physiotherapist and bakes cakes in her spare time. Maddie thinks she's had her one chance at true love. She went through a lot in her past and it made her they way she is now. She lost her boyfriend Riley in the 9/11 attacks. Now, she doesn’t open up to men, because she is scared to lose him as well. That’s until Evan comes into the picture.Evan is a primary school teacher, which made him very interesting form e from the start. As a teacher myslef, I really enjoyed the little scenes at school and with the kids.Evan and Maddie click instantly, they have a magical connection. After the first date he tells her that he might have cancer. It’s a shock in several ways. Is Maddie ready give her heart to someone she might lose again.Maddie and Evan share a lot of sweet, memorable and passionate moments and they fall for each other more and more. Evan seems to be the man to make her love again and to make her take a risk again. Of course it wouldn’t be a complete and gripping story without some drama and misunderstandings.Maddie also suffered from the way Riley’s mother behaved after the memorial service. It’s so many years ago, but it has always made Maddie feel bad. When Caitlin contacts her and wants to see her, she doesn’t know what to do.I really enjoyed this story, it’s emotional and touching, but also sweet and lively at the same time. At times I felt that some things were portrayed a bit over the top, especially the epilogue, but I still loved every page of the book. It’s told from both main character’s perspectives, which made it even more special.Helen has a great voice, includes feelings in a beautiful way and is able to create a unique setting in her story.Rating: 4.5/5

She used to have it all and was so happy, but then she lost her boyfriend in the 9/11 attacks. He was temporarily living his dream and working in New York before coming back to Australia to be with Maddie again. Now she's on her own, she has been ever since. She's working as a physiotherapist and bakes cakes in her spare time. Because she's great at making cakes she often gets special requests. When she delivers one at the wrong party she meets Evan.Evan and Maddie have something special. They instantly like each other and it could be more. Unfortunately there are some obstacles. Maddie can't forget her past and falling in love with Evan is a big risk. He has testicular cancer and there is a chance he might not survive, just like her first boyfriend. Evan finds it difficult to deal with his diagnosis and isn't really ready to share everything he's going through with someone he's just met. Do Evan and Maddie have a chance or do the circumstances prevent them from finding out if they can have something good together?Handle Me with Care is an emotional story about two people who both have a lot of baggage. While Maddie's problems have begun a long time ago Evan's have just started. The timing is completely wrong while they could have had something special. I felt so bad for them because of what happens to them in their lives. They both deserved something good, but there were many obstacles. I often had tears in my eyes and could sympathize with both Evan and Maddie. I kept wanting to give both of them a hug.Helen J Rolfe knows how to tell a story. This isn't a standard love story, but it's definitely romantic. I think she handles sensitive topics in a considerate and caring way which made the story feel very realistic. She lets her readers come really close to the main characters, which is something I love about her writing. I read this book with a sob and a smile. I cheered for Maddie and Evan when they were making progress. I also wanted them to become close as they could certainly use each other's support. A seaside holiday eventually makes a big difference for both of them and I liked the way faith helped them a little, which is exactly as it should be. I think Helen J Rolfe has written a fantastic story. There's a lot of grief, but she knows how to prevent it from becoming too heavy. The balance is exactly right. This is another strong point, there are quite many and together they are making Handle Me With Care such a good book.

In this haunting and richly imagined dual-narrative tale that echoes the eerie mystery of Rebecca and The Little Stranger, two women of very different eras are united by the secrets hidden within the walls of an English manor house.

In 1933, naive twenty-two year-old Alice--pregnant and unmarried--is in disgrace. Her mother banishes her from London to secluded Fiercombe Manor in rural Gloucestershire, where she can hide under the watchful eye of her mother's old friend, the housekeeper Mrs. Jelphs. The manor's owners, the Stantons, live abroad, and with her cover story of a recently-deceased husband Alice can have her baby there before giving it up for adoption and returning home. But as Alice endures the long, hot summer at Fiercombe awaiting the baby's birth, she senses that something is amiss with the house and its absentee owners.

Thirty years earlier, pregnant Lady Elizabeth Stanton desperately hopes for the heir her husband desires. Tormented by the memory of what happened after the birth of her first child, a daughter, she grows increasingly terrified that history will repeat itself, with devastating consequences.

After meeting Tom, the young scion of the Stanton family, Alice becomes determined to uncover the clan's tragic past and exorcise the ghosts of this idyllic, isolated house. But nothing can prepare Alice for what she uncovers. Soon it is her turn to fear: can she escape the tragic fate of the other women who have lived in the Fiercombe valley . . .

Review “Riordan’s bewitching blend of tainted aristocrats, secretive domestics, and manipulative quacks amid a crumbling English country home is atmospheric and entertaining.” (Publishers Weekly)“Mrs. Jelphs has a touch of Mrs. Danvers about her, and the old driver, Ruck, is truly creepy. This is a good match with fans of…Diane Setterfield and Kate Morton.” (Booklist)“A prickly story full of tension.” (Sunday Express (London))“A well executed, brooding, creepy atmosphere.” (Sunday Mirror (London))“Full of slow-burning tension.” (Essentials)“Borrowing from gothic literature staples Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Riordan creates a visceral and lively narrative that seizes the reader’s attention. Readers...will applaud and welcome this addition.” (Library Journal (starred review))“A sweeping saga of secrets and ghosts.” (Good Housekeeping, UK)

From the Back Cover

A house as old as Fiercombe Manor holds many secrets within its walls. But which dark chapter of its history is haunting Alice, a young woman staying there during the course of a fateful summer?

In 1933, naive twenty-two-year-old Alice is pregnant, unmarried, and disgraced. She can no longer share her parents' London home, so her desperate mother concocts a cover story and begs her old friend, Mrs. Jelphs, for help. The housekeeper at rural Fiercombe Manor, Mrs. Jelphs is moved by Alice's "plight" as a new widow and agrees to watch over her in the secluded English countryside until the baby is born and given up for adoption. Because the manor house's owners, Lord and Lady Stanton, no longer live there, Alice's only company will be Mrs. Jelphs and her skeleton staff.

Thirty years before Alice's arrival, Lady Elizabeth Stanton awaits the birth of her second child, fervently hoping he will be the boy her husband desires. But as her time nears, she is increasingly tormented by memories of what happened with her first baby and terrified that history will repeat itself . . . with devastating consequences.

At first, Fiercombe Manor offers Alice a welcome relief from her mother's disapproving gaze. But she begins to sense that all is not well in the picturesque Gloucestershire valley. After a chance encounter with Tom, the young scion of the Stanton family, Alice discovers that Fiercombe's beauty is haunted by the clan's tragic past. She is determined to exorcise the ghosts of the idyllic, isolated house.

Nothing can prepare Alice for what she uncovers. Can she escape the tragic fate of the other women who have lived in the Fiercombe valley?

About the Author Kate Riordan is a British writer and journalist who worked for the Guardian and Time Out London. She is also the author of Birdcage Walk and is already at work on her third novel. Born in London, she now lives in the Gloucestershire countryside.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Written By David Reviews I highly recommend Fiercombe Manor. The book is beautifully written and a haunting historical novel, which I found quite lovely to read. The story starts in the 1930’s with young Alice who finds herself pregnant by a married man. She is sent away from her London home in disgrace to the atmospheric and daunting Fiercombe Manor.Alice’s explorations and discoveries of her new surroundings are unveiled slowly, which builds the tensions and sets the scene so well. Alice becomes fascinated with the life of Lady Elizabeth Stanton, a former mistress of the Manor from the 1890’s. The book slips flawlessly between the two stories of Alice and Elizabeth as their two destinies somehow become eerily entwined. The detailed descriptions of Fiercombe Manor, its rooms and the surrounding valley estate will be mapped in my mind for a long time. It still feels to me like a real place I could go visit whenever I like. It is quite beautifully mapped and described though the pages of the book.Alice, Elizabeth and the characters they meet are all well drawn and interesting. I particularly liked Alice who I found attractive and became concerned for her as the story unfolded. The mysteries continue into the second half of the book and I desperately wanted a happy ending for Alice. Whether or not she got it, you will have to read for yourself. I enjoyed finding out and I’m sure you will too.

28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Fiercome Manor (UK title, "The Girl in the Photograph") By S Riaz It is 1932 and Alice is a young woman feeling constrained by life. Despite making her father proud by doing well at school and getting a good office job, her mother is disapproving about her lack of possible husbands and insists that she will be left on the shelf. Unfortunately, the one man Alice is interested in is already married. Young and naïve, she believes his tales of divorcing his wife and finds herself pregnant and alone. If her mother was disapproving before, now she is shocked and disappointed. However, she manages to find a possible solution – a childhood friend is now housekeeper at Fiercombe and Elizabeth is hastily packed off there with a tale of being widowed and needing time to recover, so she can have the child in secret.Secrets are familiar things at Fiercombe and, before long, Alice is fascinated by the previous Lady of the manor, Elizabeth Stanton. Although, she soon discovers that Elizabeth was mistress of the much grander Stanton Hall, which stood nearby. Possibly to take her mind off of her predicament, Alice begins to uncover the mystery of what happened to Elizabeth Stanton, who came to Stanton Hall in 1898.Although this uses the, now familiar, plot device of two different time lines, this novel works better than most. Mrs Jelphs, the housekeeper, ties both the stories together. Now housekeeper, she was once Elizabeth Stanton’s lady maid and staunchest defender. Elizabeth needed friends, as her marriage descended into the desperate desire by her husband for a male heir and the disappointment which ensued. With both Alice and Elizabeth’s stories revolving around the bearing of children, this is an emotional, but skilfully woven tale, of desire, despair and maternal love. A very evocative and well written novel, which manages to be moving, rather than over sentimental. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. not exactly what I was expecting, but still worth trying By My 2 Cents A story with an isolated Gothic manor as the setting is enough to make me want to read a book. In Fiercombe Manor the story begins with a young woman named Alice Eveleigh who becomes pregnant by a married man. It's 1933 London, so as not to disgrace her family she is sent by her mother to Fiercombe Manor, to wait out her days and have her baby without shaming the family. The housekeeper at Fiercombe, Mrs. Jelphs, is someone Alice's mother feels she can trust to keep Alice's secret. When Alice arrives things seem unusually quiet around the manor. The owners the Stantons are rarely around, so except for the housekeeper and caretaker, Ruck, and an occasional visit by Tom Stanton, the place is quiet. It leaves Alice plenty of time to wonder about the history of the manor. She tries to get Mrs. Jelphs to talk about the history of Fiercombe and about the people who have lived there past and present. As the former maid to Lady Elizabeth, Mrs. J is reluctant to say too much at first, but gradually Lady Elizabeth's story is revealed through old letters and journal entries, and the reader learns of the manor's tragic past. What Alice learns makes her fearful as there are certain similarities between the two women. The story is told in alternating chapters in the first person POVs by Alice (1930s) and then Elizabeth (1890s). The author did a nice job describing surroundings and giving the characters some depth. However, for a Gothic novel, this one wasn't as atmospheric as others I have read. There was one ghost aspect which really felt disappointing. The story was rolled out in a slow and deliberate way, but I have to admit that this book took me over three weeks to complete this one. It's over 400 pages and, once I put it down for a few days, it became harder to pick up. Overall, I think this book is still worth trying for fans of historical fiction.
