By Mary Bostrom I had been ill for about a month, fever, several infections, no strength. Even with doctors help I did not get better. One day I picked up Igniter of Faith and read half the book in one sitting. It was so packed with incredible testimonies and I felt healing faith arising. The next morning, for the first time in weeks, I felt strong! I accomplished more in that one day than I thought I could. This book really does ignite your dormant faith! Even though I "had" faith- like a car battery I desperately needed a "jump start"My name is Mary Bostrom and I approve this message!

About the Author A Belgian cartoonist from the Golden Age of comics, André Franquin was as important and influential throughout his career as Hergé, moulding and training dozens of artists through his long years at Spirou magazine. In his 20 years at the helm of “Spirou and Fantasio,” creator of their fantastical friend the Marsupilami, he was also the father of one of the most beloved anti-heroes of European comics, Gaston Lagaffe, as well as the delightfully dark and sarcastic “Idées Noires.” As a sign of his popularity, he received the very first Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême in 1974.

Review 'The Ace of Detectives' -- The Times'This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer' -- Raymond Chandler

About the Author Deemed ‘the father of the scientific detective story’, Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman’s place amongst the finest of crime writers.

FREEMAN'S VERY BEST MYSTERY By Mary Ingram I have read many of Freeman's mysteries but , the Jacob Street Mystery is by far the best and most thrilling one he wrote. Usually it will takeme a few days to finish one of his mysteries but I started this oneone morning and finished it that afternoon, not even taking time outfor lunch. It concerns a very talented artist and his new neighborwho professes to be an artist but she is seemingly the most untalentedartist he or anyone else has ever seen and therein lies a mysterywith more twists and turns than you could imagine. Freeman's bookscan be hard to find but if you love a good mystery with muchimagination, I suggest you track all of his you can find.

In all nineteen novels, through world wars and tremendous technological change, Dr. Thorndyke remained a bastion of Victorian rationalism. At the same time his scientific and forensic methods are still valid and impressive today. The quality of the plotting and the writing are consistently high throughout the series. As Raymond Chandler wrote of Freeman, "He has no equal in his genre." The Jacob Street Mystery is a perfect example of one of Dr. Thorndyke's astonishing methods. During his younger years, when his services were not yet in demand, he spent his leisure hours inventing ingenious murders, so he'd know how to recognize such a crime if ever someone tried it. In this book, a murderer has the bad luck to execute one of Dr. Thorndyke's hypothetical "perfect" murders. So Thorndyke knows just how to investigate it.The reader, of course, never guesses what's up. At least I didn't. Nor do any of Thorndyke's associates. The bewilderment of Thorndyke's sidekick Dr. Jervis, the burning curiosity of Thorndyke's lab assistant Polton, and the oyster-like secretiveness of the wily Thorndyke are all, as usual, good for a chuckle. There are quite a few comic strains in the plot actually. A middle-aged bachelor artist fends off the attentions of the young woman who moves next door. His ineffectual struggles to avoid her visits and her teas are pretty funny. This same young woman claims to be a modern artist, and this gives Freeman many opportunities to ridicule the "childish and barbaric" productions of the "new progressive art."I'm not describing the murders at the heart of this novel, because they are especially mysterious, and I'd rather not dispel any of the mystery.I enjoyed this novel immensely and am sad to have reached the end of the series.

I was caught up in the action from page 1. the twist at the end of the novel was just made for the movies....indeed, I kept thinking how would I film this story. Hmmm.

The Force Is Strong With This One By Todd O'Rourke Star Wars #1:Writer: Jason AaronPenciler: John CassadayIt is no secret that the rights to the Star Wars franchise has landed back in Marvel’s hands. Dark Horse had an awesome run with the license, so it was interesting to see what direction Marvel was planning on taking us. Marvel’s “Star Wars,” not to be confused with Dark Horse’s comic of the same name, is set between “A New Hope” and “Empire Strikes Back.” Although Marvel’s comic takes place during the same time frame as Dark Horse’s version, they are far from the same comic. It is pretty easy to see why the comics are set during this time frame. Marvel obviously does not want to go anywhere near Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, while Clone Wars and Rebels (both still in the SW canon) has already touched on the prequel era. Plus this is also where Leia and Han’s relationship begins to fill out, Luke attempts to get a better understanding of the Force, and Darth Vader is filled with all types of rage after the Death Star went down. You will immediately get the sense that Jason Aaron and John Cassaday get what made the original trilogy so special. Aaron does a superb job of keeping Han somewhere between swashbuckling smuggler and luckless hero, Luke as a passionate follower of the Force, and Leia as a determined freedom fighter. Meanwhile, Cassaday captures the likeness of each character so that the comic evokes the original films not only in its tone but in its visuals. This might sound like it should be obvious, but Aaron and Cassaday make Star Wars #1 feel like one of the films. There are panels that resemble classic shots and lines that make it feel familiar to any fan.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Star Wars Comics Are Back--And it's Pretty Good By Anarchy in the US There is no denying the influence Star Wars has had on modern day films and popular culture since 1977. With the buyout of George Lucas properties to Disney in 2012, it meant Disney, Lucas, and Marvel can coexist under one banner. In 2014, Marvel announced they would publish Star Wars comics starting in January 2015. With the new film coming this year “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, every fan like myself is giddy with excitement.Which, seeing as Marvel is not only publishing new Star Wars comics, but they are putting some of the A-list creators on the projects to drive readers in. I’m not one very keen on the extended universe for Star Wars or any media tie-ins to other media’s. But with big time comic’s writer Jason Aaron and artist John Cassaday doing the series, with the excitement of the new films, I had to give this a try. Fear not fans because this is a solid read for fans of the first three films and new readers.*Cue opening credits with John Williams iconic score*Collecting issues #1-6, STAR WARS picks up right after the events of Episode IV: A New Hope. The Empire’s Death Star is destroyed and is in a weakened state by taking up the outer rim of the galaxy for resources to rebuild. The heroes of the Rebel Alliance who destroyed the Death Star Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO see this as opportunity to strike against the Empire before they grow in power again by infiltrating a supply base to the planet Cymoon 1. What should have been a covert raid turns bad, it’s up to our heroes to finish the mission and survive, especially since the base is guarded by Emperors right-hand man, Darth Vader.Writer Jason Aaron makes an explosive opening 3-issue arc that is kinetic in action and enthralling character interactions that feels just like the actors dialogue from the original trilogy. It feels similar to the jail break sequence of Luke, Han, and Chewie getting Leia out of heavily guarded Death Star. Because this follows directly after the first film, Aaron fills in many gaps of information to lead up to Empire Strikes Back. The complex love/annoyance between Han and Leia, Luke continuing his rigorous training to be a proper Jedi, Darth Vader wanting to know who the mysterious pilot with strong connection to the force blew up the Death Star, and how the Empire came into contacts with the likes of Jubba the Hutt and Boba Fett. For fans of the original films, it’s pleasant to see some of the holes being filled from one film to the next, all the while making an action packed story.John Cassaday’s art work looks just like the original actors from 1977. It’s high quality stuff, as all the details of the ships, Stormtroopers, lightsabers, and every other aspect of the galaxy. Why I give the book 4 stars is because issues #4-6 the momentum slows a bit compared to the previous three issues. Leia and Han are doing their own agenda and Luke is off to find answers on Master Kenobi leave more questions than answers. It’s enjoyable, but coming off the energy of the first arc, it’s just a tad slow by comparison.Still, STAR WARS VOL.1: SKYWALKER STRIKES is an engaging opening volume under Jason Aaron and John Cassaday. It shows Marvel is pulling out all the stops in making good comics to fans of the films and it looks like things will improve. Consider me interested to read more.

By Kenneth Allan This is the first volume of the new Marvel Star Wars comics, resetting all of the previous canon (what was known as the Star Wars: Expanded Universe) in order to tell brand new stories which aren't constrained by pre-Disney buyout decisions. This volume collects issues #1-6, which ran concurrently with the Darth Vader on-going series and the Princess Leia miniseries; issue #6 is part of a mini-crossover between Star Wars and Darth Vader that is quite good and shines a lot of light on Vader's character. The comic takes place right after EPIV (A New Hope) and is entertaining, although there isn't anything groundbreaking here. We follow the regular crew as Luke struggles with his fledgling Jedi abilities, and there is a hint of a big soon-to-come plotline for Han at the end as well. We also see appearances by Vader and fan favourite Boba Fett. The art is very good and resembles the film aesthetic as much as one can expect. The colouring is spot-on and deserves mention as well. There aren't really any extras to be found, which is pretty disappointing. The first issue had 68 (!) variant covers - a brilliant extra would have been to print small versions of each (say 6 to a page) in the back. Alas, we just get some uninteresting sketches.

Why are young people dropping out of religious institutions? Can anything be done to reverse the trend? In Got Religion?, Naomi Schaefer Riley examines the reasons for the defection, why we should care, and how some communities are successfully addressing the problem. The traditional markers of growing up are getting married and becoming financially independent. But young adults are delaying these milestones, sometimes for a full decade longer than their parents and grandparents. This new phase of “emerging adulthood” is diminishing the involvement of young people in religious institutions, sapping the strength and vitality of faith communities, and creating a more barren religious landscape for the young adults who do eventually decide to return to it. Yet, clearly there are some churches, synagogues, and mosques that are making strides in bringing young people back to religion.Got Religion? offers in-depth, on-the-ground reporting about the most successful of these institutions and shows how many of the structural solutions for one religious group can be adapted to work for another. The faith communities young people attach themselves to are not necessarily the biggest or the most flashy. They are not the wealthiest or the ones employing the latest technology. Rather, they are the ones that create stability for young people, that give them real responsibility in a community and that help them form the habits of believers that will last a lifetime.

Got Religion?: How Churches, Mosques, and Synagogues Can Bring Young People Back, by Naomi Schaefer Riley

From Booklist The millennial generation is stuck in a condition called emerging adulthood; that is, these twentysomethings are delaying the traditional markers of growing up, leaving home, becoming financially independent, getting married, and having children. The reasons for this condition are varied—the new technology, the economic downturn that has affected them disproportionately as well as a combination of radical individualism and a general distrust of institutions, and, some believe, the intransigent attitudes of organized religion. One of the primary by-products is low church attendance or little to no religious affiliation among millennials. Unlike other people who have studied this group, though, Riley is more optimistic. In this short but compelling volume, she adopts an ecumenical approach, profiling religious communities—Jewish, Mormon, Catholic, Evangelical, Muslim—with an emphasis on how religions can work together to bring young people back into the fold. Millennials, she insists, are looking for a community with a sense of purpose. A thoughtful and appealing book that addresses an important topic with commonsense solutions. --June Sawyers

Review “Naomi Schaefer Riley is an astute cultural observer and critic, and a very good interpreter of the larger meanings and implications of social science research. For those concerned about the religious live of emerging adults, Got Religion? will be essential reading.” —Christian Smith, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology and principle investigator, National Study of Youth and Religion   “In researching and writing Got Religion? Naomi Schaefer Riley has accomplished a difficult task. She has managed to make fairly dense millennial generation demographic material both interesting and understandable. She has also connected the dots in illustrating how such material is relevant and instructive to those who seek to ‘bring young people back’ to their various faith traditions.” —Dr. Richard Land, president of Southern Evangelical Seminary“The precipitous drop in religious affiliation among young people in the United States has been covered to the point of exhaustion—often generating more heat than light. In Got Religion? Naomi Schaefer Riley weaves together a compelling counter narrative that focuses on the best examples of how various communities—Judaism, Catholicism, non-denominational Christianity and Islam—are successfully engaging young people. It is a study in American ingenuity, insight and reinvention as it applies to faith communities and it should be read by anyone in the field who believes that studying what works is the best way to fix what's wrong.” —Bill McGarvey, author of The Freshman Survival Guide   “Got Religion? offers two reassuring messages to those worried that the under-thirty generation is running away from religion. First, it shows that the problem is not confined to particular faiths. Mormons and Muslims turn out to be as concerned as Catholics, Protestants and Jews. Second, it demonstrates that creative programs can succeed in luring young people back to religion. There is reason for hope. Chocked full of ideas and insights, this is a book that anyone interested in ‘youth engagement’ should read.” —Jonathan D. Sarna, president, Association for Jewish Studies; the Joseph Engel Visiting Professor of American Jewish Studies, Harvard University; the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History; and chair, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, Brandeis University“No one writes about the religious experiences, beliefs, and practices of contemporary Americans more astutely or with great insight than Riley. In Got Religion? she explores the factors that tend to draw young adults into, or alienate them from, communities of faith. This is far from an exercise in merely academic sociology of religion. It contains valuable lessons for faith communities and their leaders—from Catholics and Jews to Mormons and Muslims—about what they can do to give young people, including young couples with children, stability and responsibility, helping them to deepen their spiritual lives and form habits that will serve them well in every dimension of their lives.” —Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University   “If you want a book with pat answers to the "problem" of millennials and organized religion, you've come to the wrong place. If, however, you want to consider the many ways that adults in their 20s and 30s engage with religion, God, and peoplehood, if you want a book that holds just as many questions as it does answers, then pull out your highlighter and get comfortable. Riley takes us on a fascinating journey that traverses religious, geographical, racial, and cultural boundaries. Learn from those who may share a different understanding of God but a similar drive to create a meaningful life. I know I did.” —Rabbi Shira Stutman, director of Jewish programming at Sixth & I   “Naomi Schaeffer Riley is one of the keenest analysts of American religious life today. In this book, she takes up a question that every religious community is asking. Not everyone will agree with everything in this book, but everyone who cares about American religious life will find a provocative and fruitful catalyst for conversation and action.” —Russell D. Moore, president, Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission

Wood “All young people, newly come into an urban environment, and living for the first time outside of the family group and the association of old acquaintances, constitute an element of gravest spiritual and moral dangers as well as one of untold possibilities.”Is this the latest warning from the Barna Group about the problem of young people leaving the Church? No, these are the words of University of Chicago sociologist H. Paul Douglass in The St. Louis Church Survey published in 1924. Anxiety about the spiritual fate of young adults is evergreen. And so, it seems, is the solution to the problem: “It is urged that all religious forces keep steadily in sympathetic touch with all these groups,” Douglass went on to write, “and that agencies particularly designed to serve them receive united support.”Naomi Schaefer Riley concludes Got Religion? with these words in order to remind readers that passing on the faith to the next generation has always been a challenge, even if the contemporary age adds unique twists to that challenge. Her book outlines the strategies some American evangelicals, Muslims, Catholics, Jews, historically black churches, and parachurch organizations are utilizing to attract and retain young people—defined as people born after 1980—within their respective religious communities. In the Introduction, Riley identifies three reasons why the intergenerational transmission of faith is especially difficult at the present moment: “the trends of family formation, the cultural acceptability of not belonging to a religious institution, and the steady decline of attendance” at religious services. In other words, young adults marry later, if at all, identify themselves as religious nones, and are standoffish to religious institutions—indeed, institutions more generally. Since family, religious identity, and religious participation are crucial to each of the religious groups Riley surveys, a decline in those three factors spells trouble for all of them.Obviously, there are theological differences between these various religious groups that will color how they reach out to young adults. There are also sociological differences. Historically, the Church has played a much larger role in the African American community than in the Anglo American community, for example. Jews have a unique attachment to the State of Israel. Muslims come to America as immigrants from many countries. And Mormons are concentrated in certain regions of America.Nonetheless, how these various religious groups reach out to young adults shares much in common too, sociologically speaking. After profiling some of these outreach efforts, Riley concludes her book with this statement:"Religious leaders who are successfully connecting with young adults realize that sleek advertising is not going to bring people into the pews. The barriers to entry are not matters for public relations firms to tackle. Young adults want community. They want a neighborhood. They want a critical mass of people their age. But they want to see older people and younger people in their religious institutions, too. They want a way to serve, and many of them want a way to serve sacrificially for longer periods of time. They want the racial and ethnic diversity of the country reflected in their religious community. They want a message (in English) that resonates and helps them tackle the practical challenges they face, of which there are many. They want to feel welcome whether they are single or married. And while they may appear to be experiencing an extended adolescence, when they are given responsibility, they are often inclined to take it."Multigenerational community, service opportunities, ethnic diversity, relevant religious instruction, hospitality regardless of marital status, and leadership responsibilities: Religious groups that offer these things to young adults are more likely to attract and retain them than those who don’t. Frankly, as an “older” American, such a church would be more likely to attract and retain me too. From the standpoint of Christian theology—or Muslim or Jewish theology, for that matter—Riley’s sociological account of young adults’ participation raises questions she neither asks nor answers. As a Christian minister, I want to ask questions such as: What is the role of the Holy Spirit in drawing people into the Church? Are a religious group’s doctrinal claims true or false? Is Jesus Christ the way of salvation? Were I writing a book about Christians attracting and retaining young adults in the faith, I would explore those theological questions alongside Riley’s sociological ones.Regardless, Riley’s book is a valuable one. Sociology, it turns out, can be a handmaiden to evangelism. A church that preaches the gospel but ignores what attracts and retains young is not likely to accomplish its mission very well.

This question engages my cerebral energies often, because I work with the teenagers of our church who are about to head to college, and co-pastor a congregation that has a noticeable number of middle aged men and women. So, where have the college and post college crowds gone? Naomi Schaefer Riley, an accomplished author who is also a weekly columnist for the New York Post and a former Wall Street Journal editor, delves into this difficulty and how to interest them, in her newest 174 page hardback, “Got Religion? How Churches, Mosques and Synagogues Can Bring Young People Back.” This easy-to-read volume walks through the storied approaches of diverse groups attempting to touch the twenty and thritysomethings in their world. In “Got Religion?” we are privileged to listen, with the author, to the anecdotes and narratives, feats and failures, of Presbyterian, Muslim, Jewish, Mormon and Black Baptist institutional leaders who are succeeding in reaching the college and post college crowd in some way. But we are also favored to hear the yearnings and longings, along with the turn-ons and turn-offs, of the younger people who have become involved in these establishments. The importance of community and neighborhood, the “sense of belonging” (142), rings out clearly in many of the accounts, and sundry ways. Similarly, that this is a generation “particularly suspicious of bureaucracy and slick advertising” (13) that is looking for authenticity in both leadership and laity, surfaces often. Likewise there are also indications that “service – serious, long-term sacrifice requiring service” (144) is alluring to this age group. Based on these traits, Riley also points up the importance of making a place for the twenty and thirtysomethings in leadership, that they are “often inclined to take” the responsibilities offered to them (154).In working through “Got Religion?” various emotions and cogitations were triggered in me. Everything from sheer frustration over the obvious and subtle self-centeredness exhibited in some of the statements from this younger group, to gloomy disappointment at the misunderstandings they voiced. And yet, their stories and concerns have prompted me to reconsider what can be done in our particular setting as suburban church where parishioners are splattered hither, thither and yon. Riley’s work has given me reason to pause, ponder and pray.“Got Religion?” will challenge several of your personal prejudices and preconceptions, and confirm others. Nevertheless I doubt it will be possible to examine this book and remain unaffected by it. Riley’s material would make an ideal read for congregational leadership, Christian educators, service agencies, and denominational committees concerned with attracting this age group. I readily recommend the book.(Thanks to Templeton Press for the free copy of the book made available for this review. Feel free to repost or republish this review. But as always, please give credit where credit is due. Mike)

By Wally Mees Really great survey of what churches, mosques and synagogues are actually doing with the younger generation. Inspiring. Encouraging. Easy to read. Ms. Riley really knows this "church" business remarkably well. Great job, Naomi!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Supping with the Devil By Damaskcat This is the first book I’ve read by Sally Spencer but it won’t be the last. Set in the nineteen seventies, the plot is centred round a rock festival held in the grounds of a stately home. DCI Monika Paniatowski has enemies within her own force and as a result she has been side lined and allocated the non-job of adviser on security issues to the rock festival. When the corpse of a journalist is discovered and Monika is excluded from the investigation she feels totally frustrated – but what if she could somehow solve the murder while not being part of the investigation? This is an interesting and well plotted story, with several strands to it and with plenty of humour and some marvellous scenes with the biker gang – the Devil’s Disciples – the least likely security guards in the business. I found Monika’s backstory quite confusing at times and it is probably better to read the series in order than start with this one – the eighth book in the series. I think she is an interesting character and I thought the other police characters were interesting too – especially DS Kate Meadows. I thought the portrait of an incompetent manager in the person of Wellbeloved – a misnomer if ever there was one – was very well done.If you like police procedurals with interesting characters and well-constructed plots then try this series but it is better to start with the first one which is ‘The Dead Hand of History’. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from NetGalley

Superb Series By RJPetyo In the mid seventies a RockStately rock festival is going to be held on the grounds of Stamford Hall, the estate of the Earl of Ridley outside of Westbridge, England. Although security on the grounds, as per the Earl, is going to be handled by the Devil’s Disciples motorcycle gang (echoes of Altamount), Deputy Chief Inspector Monika Paniatowski is assigned to help out. She knows she is being punished by her boss Chief Constable Baxter, her former lover, who blames her for the death of his wife, but she obeys her instructions.Baxter also assigns someone new to head Paniatowski’s investigative team which soon finds itself handling the murder of a reporter which may or may not be tied to events at the festival where, not surprisingly, drugs are being dealt on the grounds, the Earl’s wife is assaulted, and an intricate system of security cameras shows someone, who may or may not be the murder victim, sneaking through the fence.Paniatowski investigates events at the festival on her own while her team struggles under the inept leadership of DCI Wellbeloved, all the time hoping to be reunited with Paniatowski.I love this police procedural series. The plots are fast moving, the mysteries intriguing, and the investigation always fairly played out. SUPPING WITH THE DEVIL is no exception. There are twists and turns but ultimately the crimes are solved in a logical fashion. But, as always, the strongest component is the characters. They are all here. The blowhard Baxter; Monika; her second in command DCI Beresford, one time neophyte in work and in life; her bagman Kate Meadows, she of a mysterious and violent past; Dr. Shastri, no nonsense medical examiner. Even her mentor Charles Woodend makes an appearance (via phone). Each character is well drawn and believable. This novel begins and ends with very significant events in Monika’s life. As I have said in past reviews, I can’t wait to find out what happens next to these fascinating people.

Roberts First Sentence: The weathermen said it was going to be the hottest summer for fifty years, and on all the available evidence so far, they were right.DCI Monika Paniatowski has a boss who is determined to ruin her career. Her latest assignment takes her away from her team and places her as a security advisor for the rock festival being put on by the Earl of Ridley. But she’s only allowed in the house, whereas security for the grounds and even are being handled by the Devil’s Disciples motorcycle gang. Things change when the body of a tabloid journalist is found.Sally Spencer is a prolific author of three mystery series. Monika Paniatowski was first introduced to us in the 5th Charlie Woodend book, “The Golden Mile to Murder.” That said, it’s not necessary to have read that, or any of the previous books in this series as Spencer is very adept at giving us all the background we need to know about the characters within each book. This is a wonderful skill as new readers don’t feel they’ve missed anything. It is nice to see the way the series are somewhat blended as Woodend did make an appearance in this book.Monika is something of a tough character to like, but there are good reasons for that, of which we learn. Even so, she is respected and appreciated by her team. All except for DCI Wellbeloved, who is anything but. That is balanced out by DS Meadows who is sharp, tough and has an interesting background of her own. If you like a badass, female cop, you’ll love Meadows. The story has very good plot twists. Spencer is very good at the unexpected, at the same time presenting a strong, accurate perspective on the issues with which career women have had to deal; both in the 70s and today.“Supping with the Devil’ is filled with excellent twists, turns and revelations. Everybody's Daughter, by Michael John Sullivan

Review "I applaud Michael John Sullivan for bringing his beautiful story to life."

About the Author Michael John Sullivan graduated from St. John’s University with a communications degree and a promising future in the field of journalism after working for the official school paper the previous two years. Six months later, he found himself washing his hair in a toilet at the same university as he prepared for a job interview.Riding a New York City subway train at night, his only companion was a green plastic bag of belongings. During these bleak days, he began writing his most reflective and emotional childhood and adult memories now featured in two of his novels, Necessary Heartbreak and Everybody's Daughter.Sullivan spent almost a month on the E train at night until he was rescued by relatives. After spending much of the past two decades raising their daughters while working at home, Sullivan returned to his notes in 2007 and began writing Necessary Heartbreak: A Novel of Faith and Forgiveness. It was published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint in April 2010. He finished Everybody's Daughter in 2012 and is currently writing the last book in the series, The Greatest Christmas.Sullivan lives in New York with his family.

Sullivan, is both the second book of a trilogy as well as a novel that can easily stand on its own. You don't have to have read Necessary Heartbreak, the first in the trilogy, in order to enjoy this one (but you should because it adds to the richness of the read and because Necessary Heartbreak is a great title).Everybody's Daughter centers on Michael Stewart, a long-widowed forty-something whose greatest accomplishment is raising his 14-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, on his own after his wife was killed in a car accident. A troubled family history and the guilt and grief he feels over his wife's death has left Michael struggling to connect with the world and others. And he's also dealing with the normal challenges any parent does with a daughter who is no longer a little girl but still needs her dad. While volunteering at their church, he and Elizabeth discovered a tunnel that led them to First Century Jerusalem in the week before Christ's death. Four months later, he is still pondering the meaning of what he saw and who he met, especially a woman named Leah, who helped save him and Elizabeth from a brutal Roman soldier and with whom Michael fell in love. When Michael has the chance to enter the tunnel again, he does. Elizabeth follows him, not knowing that her father has already returned. Michael is blamed for Elizabeth's disappearance. Father and daughter must fight their separate battles in separate centuries.Everybody's Daughter works on a number of levels. Yes, it's a "Christian" novel, because faith does play a large part in Michael's journey, but it is much more than a "God will make you happy" novel. Parts of it feel like a mystery as Michael tries to find Elizabeth. In Michael, Sullivan has drawn a deeply rich, complex character who has as many doubts about God and forgiveness and as much pent-up anger and guilt as the rest of us. He's not an anti-hero; he's imperfect and flawed and genuine. What moved me the most about this book is that it is filled with genuine emotion that isn't overwrought and with a view of faith and forgiveness that feels natural and accessible. (There's actually a little inter-faith scene that adds some comic relief at a crucial point.) Everybody's Daughter is a difficult book to classify. Is it religious fiction? Historical fiction? Mystery? Mainstream fiction? It's a little bit of all those things, and it's a great read. Give it a try. (Now I can't wait for the third book.)

By Marianne Little How can one even begin to write a review of Michael John Sullivan's sure to be best seller: "Everybody's Daughter?" I have tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. I have long awaited the release of this amazing journey through time with Michael and Elizabeth. If there is one short thing I can say, that is the central theme of this book, it is to leave nothing left unsaid or done as we have no idea of what the future holds. If you follow the path that Michael leads you down, you will never forget to say that last words of love, where if tomorrow never comes, you will have no regrets. Thank you Michael John Sullivan for the wonderful book that I will can't wear out this time a dozen times re-reading it as it is on my Kindle Fire! For readers who haven't read the previous book that this one leads up to, please read "Necessary Heartbreak." Combined, they make the story complete. Again congratulations and thank you Michael for another book that touched my spirit, filled my eyes with tears and left me stunned, as always. Well done, well done![ASIN:B0033DDIVY Necessary Heartbreak.]

By lighthouse88 Title: Everybody's DaughterAuthor: Michael John Sullivan[...]Pages: 328Year: 2012Publisher: Fiction Standard What would you do if you could travel back to the time when Jesus walked the earth? Is there a particular time of Jesus' life you would like to witness for yourself? Have you any questions you would love to ask Jesus? This story is a continuation of the first in this series entitled, Necessary Heartbreak, which I recommend you read first. Even if you don't read that book first, you will be engrossed in the story within minutes of starting. There is man named Michael, who is a single father, raising a daughter alone. They have been together without a wife/mother since after Elizabeth was born. How did they end up where they are? Where are they? Well, it depends on what part of the story you are reading. The author leads his readers through the characters he created to the many different events in the life of Jesus. Michael and Elizabeth can't go to Jerusalem any time they want to though, and they aren't the only ones who have experienced this phenomenon. In a church, there is a Black Book where many pastors have written down stories from people who have traveled back in time. Does this book contain clues for those who follow them? Dennis is the pastor and he has a past. What kind of past? One that shows his many mistakes and a desire now to be forgiven of the sins he has committed. Dennis' past somehow involves Michael's, but how? There are Connie, Sammie, and Jim who know Michael or want to know him, but Michael wants nothing to do with them. The FBI wants to talk to Michael about his daughter; they think he has done something to her. Why? Well, you've got to read the book! In the story, it is interesting how different characters respond to what Michael or Elizabeth tells them. Some think they have lost it while others believe them. Though they can't travel back in time when they want to, there is something that links the travel times together. Can you guess what it is? In this work of fiction, you and I are shown how lives interact with others. We see how Jesus might be working in our lives to make all things new. Sometimes we might even forget that God has a better plan that we can't quite grasp or the fact that He is present always. I read this book with a thirsty soul and came through to find I enjoyed the story immensely. You might find you can relate to a character or two as they come together to create a brilliant masterpiece. For me, this is a 5-star book. This is a book that is believable and well-written fiction that has a touch of reality. Can you find it?

Jason was caught up in a relationship with Melanie because her father owned major shares in his restaurant while Chassidy was breaking up with her supposed boyfriend at the same restaurant. Love, passion and sameness of heart brought Jason and Chass together. Romantic story and an excellent short read.

3.5 billion years old. Explored for one brief second in time and just as quickly abandoned. Rebelling against government directed aggression and bound by a pact of nonviolence, Jake Starnes and the Council build paradise where none thought to look. Ruthless eyes now turn toward the heavens, forcing the citizens of Luna into conflict. How do you dictate the terms of war without harming those who seek to harm you? Come inside for a look at ingenuity on a planetary scale! LUNA demonstrates that mankind can rise above its base tendencies and act as an example to accomplishment by intellect rather than brute force. The leadership of Luna embraces a brilliantly creative philosophy of nonviolence in bringing Earth's military might to a halt; waging the most humane offensive action ever seen in the history of mankind in a quest towards peaceful sovereignty. Savant intelligence copes with drama on an epic scale with a twist of romance, intimacy, and love. Featuring a new look at sci-fi adventure and conflict on Earth's cratered and lava scorched moon. The lure of fabulous mineral wealth combines with secrets of longevity strong enough to lure those in power toward a brutal and merciless conclusion.

Imagine living on a colonized moon-or rather in it! The highly intelligent people, especially the children, live in a non-violent society that is pretty well self-sufficient with technologies and riches we could only dream of on Earth and space craft that makes Star Trek look like the stone ages. What they don't know how to do, they find people from Earth to help them figure out. Of course there is always someone out to take over something that looks like it could make them rich and the governments of Earth are no different towards the moon. You have to read it to see how the people of Luna put them in their place- I don't want to give too much away, after all. Of course what would a society like this be without some intergalactic (read Earth-Moon) romance? J. Carl Hudson helps us see that people of all nations really can get along if we put aside the egos that lead us to desire dominance of all other nations.

I really wish this was not a fictional story! The plot was well thought out and the research was thorough. The idea of waging a "War of Inconvenience" is a fantastic one. Why can't our real world leaders figure out how to do the same type of thing?I loved this book and would unhesitatingly recommend it to all readers, but especially to SciFi fans!

Much food for thought in today's world. If only the power's to-be would read Luna and follow Jake's lead. We can only hope and dream of what might be possible through the imagination of J. Carl Hudson. I'm ready to cash in my frequent flyer miles for my trip to Luna and beyond. Where's my boarding pass?
