6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A few mistakes, but overall good. By Kimberly Rice Other than the fact that this didn't come in until two weeks after it was supposed to, this is (for the most part) a very good book. It adapts the anime beautifully, covering up through, I believe, halfway through the second episode. Meaning that at that rate, we can expect a sixteen-volume series. However, Ryuko's name is misspelled on the back of the book twice as "Ryuki." Additionally, the translator is rather inconsistent in terms of elongating syllables. The "no" in "Honnouji" is elongated, but the "ryu" in "Ryuko" isn't, and neither is the "so" in "sen-i soshitsu." Furthermore, the term "kamui" is translated as "godrobe" exactly once. Every time it appears after the first time, it's "kamui."Still, though, this is pretty darn good. The art is good and the battles are exciting and over-the-top, just like the anime. Buy this.

It did not disappoint. This manga really captures the tone and feel of the anime and was really fun to read. The art is great, in my opinion. I can't wait for the next book in line!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Didn't lose its way By ArtsyPreMed I loved the show, so overall I've enjoyed its manga counterpart. The dynamic insanity of the animation is faithfully translated onto the page, which I really like. However, I don't quite like how round and "poofy" Satsuki's hair looks in some panels, but that might just be the artist's choice. It's not a big deal. 99% of the time, the manga's art style is very similar to that of the show's. I look forward to buying and reading more volumes to complete my collection. These are much more affordable than the absurdly expensive Aniplex DVDs, so this manga serves as a more than adequate substitute.

Was your mother too busy, too tired, or too checked out to provide you with the nurturing you needed as a child? Men and women who were "undermothered" as children often struggle with intimate relationships, in part because of their unmet need for maternal care.

The Emotionally Absent Mother will help you understand what was missing from your childhood, how this relates to your mother's own history, and how you can fill the "mother gap" by:

  • Examining the past with compassion for yourself and your mother
  • Finding the child inside of you and learning to mother yourself
  • Opening to the archetype of the good mother
  • Allowing friends and loved ones to provide support, guidance, and other elements of good mothering that you missed

Psychotherapist Jasmin Lee Cori traces perceived personal "defects" back to mothering deficits, relieving self-blame. And by teaching today's undermothered adults to cultivate the mothering they missed, she helps them secure happier futures - for themselves and their children.

413 of 418 people found the following review helpful. a very important book for me By a reader I have always carried with me the feeling that I grew up without a mother, even though I had a mother. My mother was physically present (she even stayed at home and did not work most of the years of my childhood) and certainly not a malicious person by any stretch of the imagination. So this was a crazy feeling to carry around with me as an adult. This book confirmed for me that I am in fact not crazy to feel this way, and explained very clearly how and why many daughters enter adulthood with the feeling of being motherless or under-mothered, how this affects them in their adult life, and finally gives very practical advice for how to recover. This books is clear, well-written, nuanced, and organized. In chapter two, The Many Faces of the Good Mother, it provides a clear, balanced picture of what it looks like when a mother is meeting her child's needs fully (not perfectly!). Other recovery books have helped me to see that abandonment and neglect exist on a spectrum (i.e. just because you weren't left as a baby on someone's doorstep doesn't mean you weren't abandoned on some level as a child). This book helped me to refine my understanding even further and hone in on the specific holes that I experienced in my relationship with my mother--holes that are still affecting how I function as an adult, and how I function as a mother myself. It isn't about blame or resentment, but about having clarity and taking responsibility for your needs so that you can move on. The book is very affirming in telling the reader: if it is still bothering you, then it is still bothering you. It's not over and done with until you feel finished with it. This book is written to help you move on so that you can think about other things.I found some (not all) of the recovery exercises and suggestions to be a little on the cheesy side, but as I'm by now a seasoned reader of self-help books, I have developed a high tolerance for this kind of thing. I'm sure that different readers will take what is useful for them. As long as the book can benefit me hugely overall I don't mind if it throws out a few suggestions that I'm not crazy about. I definitely rate this book as a very important one in my overall journey in recovery because I firmly believe that there are very important issues specific to the mother-daughter relationship that need to be handled separately. Finally someone did (very gracefully, I might add), and I am really grateful! The world desperately needs its "good enough" mothers, and this book is one good tool for finding your way back to what that means when it was not modeled for you. Really, what could be more important?

139 of 140 people found the following review helpful. The answers are here By Karen Jones If this list describes you, then you must read this book. Then find a counselor and get some help to deal with it. It will hurt to read this book. You will have realizations that are mind-blowing and gut-wrenching. But you will find a lot of answers for why you are the way you are. This list is a quote from the book.* When you see a tender mother-child interaction, you are emotionally triggered. You may feel choked up and teary or push away the pain by becoming critical and dismissive. (It hurts to see what you didn't have.)* You would just as soon not look deeply into your relationship with your mother. Better to "let sleeping dogs lie."* When you visit your mother, you find yourself numbing or going into a trance state in which you are not fully present. Visits are always upsetting, and you find yourself back in painful childhood feelings.* You crave true closeness yet feel uncomfortable and afraid of it. It is unfamiliar to you.* You feel some core shame and suffer from feelings (often hidden) that there is something unlovable about you.* You avoid having children of your own, feeling somehow not quite like "parent material."Remember Bruce Willis's character in The Sixth Sense? The realizations I had were like when he realizes at the end that he's one of the dead people. His life flashes before his eyes in a wave of disbelief and suddenly everything makes sense. He looks back on all the times that things were not quite right but he couldn't explain them at the time. Now, there's an explanation.

Regardless of the particulars of your formative experiences or relationsips with your parents, Cori presents knowledge AND wisdom applicable to all who hope to grow from injured children to whole adults. Among other helpful practices, she includes guidance on how and with whom to make up NOW for what you missed THEN and, by remedying deficits, how to be the person that each child is meant to become. I'd recommed it to anyone at any stage of re-parenting or who might be wondering what parts of him/herself need nurturing and/or developing.

Manifesto for the Dead is a surreal noir that takes as its main character the master of noir, the late crime novelist Jim Thompson at the end of his career, suspecting he has been framed by a Hollywood producer for the murder of a young starlet. An intricate blend of biography, fiction, and suspense, this literary thriller offers a hair-raising portrait of one of crime fiction’s most notorious true-life figures—and a brutal satire of the entertainment industry in the tradition of The Day of the Locust.   As the novel opens, the aging writer is at the end of his string—a habitué of Hollywood bars and endless drinking sessions at the Musso & Frank Grill. Here he is approached by a small-time producer, Billy Miracle, with an offer to work on a project designed to resurrect the career of a fading screen star.   Thompson accepts, and soon finds himself at the center of a lurid triangle, inadvertently following a trail that leads from a dead starlet—found strangled in the back of a Cadillac—to the doorstep of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood.   Set in the seamy back streets of Los Angeles, in 1972, Manifesto for the Dead tells the story of legendary crime writer Jim Thompson in his darkest hour. It is a book about desire and lust, about a writer struggling with illusion, disillusion and fate on the back lots of Hollywood. But the Manifesto is also a novel-within-a-novel, telling two stories that intertwine—one set in Hollywood, the other in Thompson’s imagination—each rushing headlong into the other, into that area where fact and fiction are no longer distinguishable, and the darkness is inseparable from the light.

Manifesto for the Dead, by Domenic Stansberry

From Publishers Weekly The always-adventurous Stansberry, whose The Last Days of Il Duce (1998) was nominated for both an Edgar and a Hammett Award, endeavors to bring the talented, troubled noir icon Jim Thompson to life, and comes close to pulling it off. Certainly the real-life details ring true: it's 1971, and 64-year-old novelist Thompson is on the downward curve of his career, drinking too much at the famous Musso & Frank Grill on Hollywood Boulevard. After writing dozens of successful novels and two movie scripts with Stanley Kubrick, Thompson is out of money and ideas. His wife, Alberta, is disillusioned with him, and the couple is forced to move into a cheaper apartment. Then a sleazy producer called Billy Miracle and a fading star named Michele Haze sign the vulnerable Jim to write a novel based on a screenplay, scheming to rope movie mogul Jack Lombard into bankrolling both the book and the film. The tale turns seamy when a starlet is murdered, and Thompson is set up as the chief suspect. Though the book is clearly an homage to the late noir writer, Stansberry is less successful with his murder-mystery stylings than he is with his uncanny recreations of Thompson's writing. Stansberry works heroically to distract his readers with chapters of the protagonist's novel-in-progress, which channel Th0mpson's masterful use of dark, simple, powerful imagery. He also describes the hero coping with, and mirroring, the notion of plot inconsistencies: "He'd been up against that wall himself, clutching all those ragged ends, stories within stories that almost webbed together...." Though committed Thompson fans may quibble, there's a lot in this bluntly articulate tale to like. The book-within-a-book concept, even if it develops at the expense of the plot line, flashes with Stansberry's brand of fresh, stark prose. (Jan.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Fresh from his well-regarded The Last Days of Il Duce (1998), Stansberry plunges into an elegiac, crummy folly: a mystery starring legendary pulpmeister Jim Thompson, still on his uppers in 1971. The dark master is 64, but he's still got the raging appetites of a youngster, and quick as any callow noir hero he's allowed low-rent Hollywood producer Billy Miracle to inveigle him into a deal to use a grisly newspaper anecdote as the basis for a screenplay Thompson expects to sell as a novel titled, inevitably, Manifesto for the Dead. The assignment not only brings the aging writer up against hired killers and dead beauties, a frame-up and a dozen betrayals, but plunges him into his own fiction as his life and art become intertwined. The gimmick of alternating Thompson's real-life adventures with the macabre fiction that's gradually swallowing him up is an ingenious conceit, but Stansberry isn't the writer to pull it off. His occasional bleak zingers (``He had not died after all. He was in Beverly Hills'') are offset by amateurishly purple prose (the first victim is ``strangled about the neck''), and Stansberry's Thompson doesn't write any better than Stansberry. The final effect is like a highball of Kafka and 7-Up, or a trailer for an anthology of Coen Brothers' movies from Blood Simple to Barton Fink. At no point, sadly, does it sound like the real Jim Thompson. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From the Publisher REVIEWS AND PRAISE FOR MANIFESTO FOR THE DEAD

"A dark and brooding novel... Stansberry's prose is an eerie echo of a dead man's style. And his insights into a writer's anxiety about losing his identity to his characters would make Thompson's own skin crawl." --The New York Times

"Fascinating, beautifully written.... Thompson is alive on the page, and the questions that Stansberry poses about the nature of noir seem part of Thompson's own disintegrating persona... an enviable achievement." --San Francisco Chronicle

"Stansberry buries a sense of cosmic foreboding in nearly every line. Through a poetics of menace that at times takes on a positively hallucinatory beauty, Stansberry exposes the Manichaean heart of noir." --LA Weekly

Off-beat Classic By Susan D'Angelo This book did not get as much attention as Last Days of Il Duce, but it is in many ways a more interesting novel--with its novel-within-a-novel structure and its dynamic portrait of crime novelist Jim Thompson. A short, punchy book that defies easy categorization. Stansberry defintely twists the genre to his own purposes here. I liked Il Duce a lot, but this is more gold from a very good writer working on the fringes of the convenentional crime genre.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Grimey By Geoffrey S. Hineman I've got a love hate relation ship with this book. I must admit that it was an impulse buy-a 99¢ special with a cool cover sitting near the checkout at a Border's outlet. I figured, what the hell. While there seem to be raves about the premise of the protagonist, Jim Thompson, writing a story in which he, in reality, is becoming a character. The technique is really not worth the hype, nor is it particularly groundbreaking like, say "House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski. That gripe aside, what we do have here is a refreshing, intriguing story that, if nothing else has a convincing tone that made want to keep turning pages. While I'm not too well read in the hard-boiled genre, this is a book that might make me want to dig deeper. Set in 1950s Hollywood, Stansberry gives us a look at the grime beneath the glitz: the hookers and alcoholics, the invalids and crazies. If it were a movie, Quentin Tarantino would be behind the camera and Harvey Keitel would be starring lead, carrying a pocketful of pimp swagger left over from Taxi Driver. To the story, Jamesy!Thompson is asked, by Billy Miracle to write a script for a movie that Miracle is shopping. Miracle is in debt up to his forked-tongue in people who wouldn't hesitate to break his legs. The alcoholic Thompson accepts the offer and gets the lead line from Miracle. As Miracle gives him direction, Thompson starts to realize that events happening around him (murders, cover-ups, and mistaken identities) are running parallel to the story Miracle is feeding him. Before too long, Thompson sees where things are going, but it might just be too late. (Cue the spooky string music here). In a seemingly simple turn of events, we reach the climax of the book. On page 162 of my copy, Miracle explains everything. From a technique perspective, the whole thing is a total mess. One full page of monologue reads like a list of he said/she said drivel. Rather than trusting the reader to figure out what was going down-which would have taken just a little bit more effort on the author's part-we get a summation that leaves us confused rather than shocked. It was shortcut that could've (and should've) been avoided. Since the book tips the scales at 184 pages, there is plenty of room for more development. That said, rare is the book these days that makes me want to park my posterior at the controls and mash the keyboard all day. Stansberry's mysterious characters and convincing descriptions of Hollywood's underbelly was plenty of motivation. Ultimately, if your looking for a light read to knock off in a long afternoon, I'd say that, at 99¢, Manifesto for the Dead is money well spent.

I don't know if Jim Thompson would have appreciated the story, but Stansberry captures his voice and puts us in the booth next to the creaters of the noir classics for a ride that captures both the voice and atmosphere of classic noir. While some may complain that noir is too dark, the problem may lie in the fact that it's too real for fiction. Stansberry captures that in the work and does an excellent job creating a story within the story which reflects the voice of Jim Thompson while remaining true to his own voice within his own narration. Not a great book, but a good addition to the canon.

Raising Peacemakers tells a twenty-two year story of kids growing up with peacemaking as their foundation. At Downtown Alternative School (DAS), a small public elementary school in Toronto, child-to-child conflicts were understood as opportunities. Children and adults worked hard to create a warm inclusive community where differing viewpoints and disagreements could be handled fairly and safely. While the book includes documentation and transcripts, it’s a narrative rather than an academic text. It’s the author’s story and many stories. It’s a trail of re-thinking, negotiating and re-negotiating, solving and re-solving (occasionally resolving) teaching and learning dilemmas. It’s a tale of one school’s brave and optimistic effort to create and sustain healthy, safe, equitable, and academically relevant conditions for and with people whose lives were and are at stake in public education. It’s about children and adults growing together as they discover more about what it means (and what it takes) to become responsible citizens who care about each other, about their community, and about the world. Between their many inevitable conflicts, encouraged by adults, DAS children established their own rituals. They would double-cross their arms and clasp fingers in a group handshake to mark the conclusion of “a peacemaking.” They would wipe away tears, giggle, move on to other things, or resume their play. They were learning to express themselves, listen, and include. The adults learned to hold back, hover, and accept what for the children constituted resolution, even when they (the adults) did not always fully get it. The DAS community was dedicated to the serious work, and to the joy, of respectful relationships and power sharing. This book invites you to step back more than twenty years to learn about how this began and what keeps it alive to this day.

Raising Peacemakers, by Esther Sokolov Fine

About the Author Esther (Sokolov) Fine is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at York University, in Toronto, Canada, where she has taught since 1991. Before coming to York, she was an elementary teacher with the Toronto Board of Education. There, she taught in downtown public housing communities and alternative programs, including four years at the Downtown Alternative School (DAS). The book Children as Peacemakers (1995), which she co-authored with teachers Ann Lacey and Joan Baer, presents a history of the Downtown Alternative School and tells about the early years of peacemaking. Reflecting on her own early life, Esther writes: “The best part of school was when librarian Mrs. Barnes and some of our homeroom teachers read aloud from wonderful books. The worst part was the long walk home from school, crossing the vacant lot by myself on a narrow path that led to Lilac Street.” Since 1993 Esther has been engaged in video research with the same group of students, teachers and parents. In this research (largely funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada—SSHRC) she and filmmaker Roberta King have watched these children grow up and filmed and interviewed many of them, their families, and their teachers across this 20+ year period. Details and edited film from this work can be seen at www.childrenaspeacemakers.ca. A feature documentary, Life at School: the DAS Tapes was launched in 2001. Esther teaches pre-service and graduate courses in creative writing, literacy, adolescent and children’s literature, critical pedagogy, and models (alternative models) of education. She was born in Detroit and attended the University of Michigan where, in 1968, she won a Hopwood Award for fiction. Esther completed her doctoral studies in 1990 at the University of Toronto (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) and her MFA in creative writing in 2003 at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Esther has lived in Toronto since the 1960s. She has an adult daughter, Keira, who possesses outstanding social skills and makes her mother proud and grateful every day.

By Charles L “Raising Peacemakers” is so much more than a well-designed blueprint for creating an alternative dispute resolution system in public schools. It is a deeply felt, albeit subtle, argument for the need throughout society for similar methods to resolve the disputes that separate and divide. Entertainingly written, “Raising Peacemakers” should be read by anyone who deals with disagreements, whether between children, between adults or between entire nations. There is much to be learned from the directness and simplicity of children.

Clearly, we'd be living in a different kind of world if those holding the reins of power had been nurtured by the likes of Esther Sokolov Fine. Brava for sharing your experiences and ideas in this "fine" book!

"Raising Peacemakers" is an inspiring look at the effects an innovative elementary school program had on the lives of the parents, teachers, and students involved. But even more than that, it shows what children are capable of when they're empowered to solve their own conflicts and take control over their lives. In this world of helicopter parenting and protecting children from little failures, I think this is a powerful argument for allowing kids to work through their own challenges, with guidance, yes, but with the freedom to take missteps and learn from their mistakes.

Trina became overweight while grieving for her mother; she was constantly bullied at school. After a few months the adolescent was left to strive for herself in the cold lonely world because her father gave up. She made wrong choices in her love life; she was seeking love and validation in the wrong places. She fell in love with a 60 year old man that had several lovers; Trina knew about life secret life and didn't leave him because of validation. The teen became so desperate that she was ready to give up on life; she hated living. It was hard for her to reach out to people; nobody knew what she was going through. She quit school; she was waiting for death to snatch her! Aubrey, Trina’s father applied for leave without pay from his job to provide palliative care for his wife during her months of ailment. He was unable to keep it together. Aubrey became clinically depress after losing his wife to cancer. He lost his job and stopped caring for himself and his daughter. He became a drunkard; his daughter had to care for him. He eventually gave up on life. A teacher from Trina’s school came to her rescue as she was at the lowest point in her life. Her teacher Miss Bernard invited Trina to live with her; she mentored her in academics; she showed her love and kindness. Trina had hope in living again; she went back to school and graduated at the top of her class and furthered her education. She later became a counselor to help young teens that were affected by death of a love one.

Her family was affected by poverty and illness. Her mom died of cancer and this changed her life. This left her with deep scars. She started to gain weight. At school, children used to bully her. Because she felt insecure, she started a relationship with a much older man. With the help of a teacher, she succeeds to leave behind all her problems. She becomes a new, stronger person. This is a very inspirational character.

By Laura Martin My husband and I have been to one of Tim and Norene's amazing seminars and have had counseling sessions with Norene for almost a year now, I thought our marriage was over, but their knowledge and insight has helped us immensely. This book gives couples who don't have the time for a three day seminar or the money for therapy sessions, hope.It also provides suggestions and valuable information that helps you understand what needs to change in order to have the marriage that both of you really want.I would recommend this book to those with struggling with their marriage and couples contemplating marriage.

This one is especially readable and extremely well organized. It doesn't bog down in details about theory, but there is enough explanation to make it interesting. The activities suggested for couples aren't burdensome, and make perfect sense. I'm going to recommend it to all my clients and to colleagues who have expressed interest in Imago relationship counseling. If your relationship is in trouble, the guidance in this book should really help.

The book is well-written, easy to understand, thorough, and offers complete direction to make your relationships better. One of the unique features I liked about this book is the ability I had to skip around between all the chapters. This allowed me to easily review what I had learned. It also allows me the freedom to use the chapters with the clients I am working with. This book is just so easy to read and follow. I highly recommend it. Dr. Sharon Myer

Until You, by Deborah E. Hammond

From the Author This book was inspired by my family's service during World War II and particularly the service of my uncle Harry Gordon Sheetenhelm. The engagements of the main male character Jack McGregor mirror the war year service of my uncle. When the story begins, the war is over and the two main characters, Jack McGregor and Diana Scott are in search of Diana's mentor and colleague; Professor Albert Pearlman. Professor Pearlman had volunteered his services to the military's Monuments Men project and is now missing somewhere in Europe. As the two main characters continue their search for the missing professor, they both experience a connection and a redemption from the horrors of war. Jack begins to come back to life after his scarring war time experiences and Diana is the source of that rebirth. As they come together as a couple, they make the fateful decision to remain in Europe and begin the rebuilding process. Jack begins a lifelong career that will take him throughout Europe dealing with the refugee crisis, food shortages and the actual rebuilding program through the Marshall Plan. Again, the historical facts of the time period are woven throughout the story of rebirth; both of the two main characters and of the European continent that they love.

This book, like The English Rose, inserts historical facts into the fictional story. You feel the love grow between Diana and Jack and you are genuinely happy for them. You travel with them through some hard times but you are also there with them through the wonderful times. A great romance!

Mary Paterson, or, The Fatal Error is a high-Victorian tale of the tragic life, and sorry end, of poor Mary Paterson: her fall from grace, her unhappy loves - and her final grisly demise at the hands of Burke and Hare, who kept Edinburgh's anatomists supplied with freshly manufactured corpses. But the melodrama doesn't stop with Mary lying cold upon the dissecting slab: David Pae's galloping novel, originally serialised in the Dundee People's Journal in 1864 and 1865, hounds Burke and Hare to their capture and trial, leads Burke to the gallows, and thereafter follows Hare and his accomplices to their various just deserts. The Scottish writer David Pae was one of the most successful serial novelists of his day. Edited by Caroline McCracken-Flesher, this new edition of Pae's original and unexpurgated tale not only provides a fascinating window into the popular Victorian imagination but is also a highly entertaining novel in its own right.
