The author of Choosing Happiness reveals how in order to meet a desire for rewarding relationships, we must first start with ourselves

This book allows us to understand our relationships with others through a deepened and more self-accepting relationship with ourselves. Why do we behave as we do, if it doesn't get us what we want? Can we balance our needs for closeness and for independence? Can we understand our emotional history and go beyond it? How do we negotiate our needs with those of other people? Can we become the lover, partner, or friend we long to be? Gay, straight, old, young; we want our relationships to "work." Through a variety of moving, personal stories, a rare breadth of well-founded ideas, and her own inspiring belief in the rewards of love, Stephanie Dowrick shows how possible it is to experience the pleasures of self-acceptance—and the lasting joy of satisfying connections with others.

It's 1912, and London is in turmoil....

The suffragette movement is reaching fever pitch, but for broke Fleet Street tomboy Frankie George, just getting by in the cutthroat world of newspapers is hard enough. Sent to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, Frankie finds herself fascinated by the tightly laced acrobat and follows her across London to a Mayfair corset shop that hides more than one dark secret.

Then Ebony Diamond mysteriously disappears in the middle of a performance, and Frankie is drawn into a world of tricks, society columnists, corset fetishists, suffragettes, and circus freaks. How did Ebony vanish, who was she afraid of, and what goes on behind the doors of the mysterious Hourglass Factory?

From the newsrooms of Fleet Street to the drawing rooms of high society, the missing Ebony Diamond leads Frankie to the trail of a murderous villain with a plot more deadly than anyone could have imagined....

With a major film, Suffragette, starring Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Carey Mulligan, coming soon, suffragettes will be back in the limelight once again, nearly 100 years after they fought for votes for women.

A fantastic debut By Alba in Bookland Rating: 4,5The Hourglass Factory is a brilliant debut set in 1912, when the suffragette movement is determined to be heard in London and an entire branch of police has been set up to deal with it. Frankie, the main character, finds herself in the middle of all this when she is asked by her newspaper to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, who happens to be a suffragette. Ebony has no time for interviews as she has some other urgent matters to attend, but Frankie who wants to prove she is as good as any other male journalist doesn't let her go so easily. But then, Ebony disappears and Frankie, looking for her, ends up in a crime scene. Something is going on and she is determined to unravel it.From that moment we follow Frankie's investigations and with the help of a snake dancer and some of her contacts, she soon discovers that Ebony's disappearance is surrounded by secrets and something big is about to happen. The plot is full of twists and subplots that keep you gripped to its pages wanting to know more.Plus the setting of this novel is fascinating. I don't know a lot about the suffragette movement but this story has certainly piqued my interest. I will, for sure, look for more information and stories about this. And Lucy's style is so descriptive and detailed, that you could actually picture yourself in the middle of the dark streets of London in 1912. You can tell that there's been a resourceful research behind this novel. I especially loved reading about the fashion of that period, how some girls chose to wear pants and were regarded as too manly or how wearing a hat with a taxidermied seagull glued to it was seen as elegant. And don't forget the corset, key to the story.Even if at the beginning I found the pace of the story a bit slow, with the great number of characters we are introduced, I soon started to enjoy it, a lot. I found it very interesting that some chapters were narrated from the police's point of view, who are also investigating the murders and Ebony's disappearance but seemed to be a bit too obsessed with the suffragette movement. All in all, a fantastic debut by Lucy Ribchester that kept me awake hours, wanting to know more. Lucy is definitely an author to watch in the future.

Review: 'The Hourglass Factory' by Lucy Ribchester By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" Set in London 1912, the story of 'The Hourglass Factory' revolves around tomboy Frankie George who is a reporter who wants to make a name for herself within the male-dominated world of newspapers. However, this is no easy feat as her boss only wants her to write articles for the Ladies section and nothing else. When Frankie gets the assignment to interview trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, she is immediately intrigued. However, when Ebony never shows up for their meeting, Frankie starts to wonder what could have happened and decides to investigate. This unexpectedly leads her to the scene of a murder, which is just the start of a whirlwind mystery including circus artists, suffragettes and the mysterious Hourglass factory...If this novel sets the bar for 2015 book releases, all I can say is we have got an incredible year ahead of us. What an amazing read! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book, from the author's detailed and alluring writing style to the gripping storyline and the wonderful collection of unique and captivating characters. I loved the main character, Frankie, and her drive to uncover the story of what is going on. All of the other characters such as trapeze artist Ebony Diamond, snake dancer Millie, the eccentric Twinkle and shifty Liam managed to add their own touch to the story, just like the chapters told from the point of view of one of the police officers.I also loved the setting of the novel. The suffragette movement is a really fascinating part of history and I loved discovering more about it while reading this novel. Lucy Ribchester managed to describe everything so detailed and vividly, making it really easy to picture it all and really get immersed in the story. I was constantly guessing what was going to happen and what Frankie would stumble upon next; I was quite disappointed when I reached the ending, but at the same time I couldn't wait to get there to finally figure it all out. 'The Hourglass Factory' is an incredibly fascinating and thoroughly entertaining book, set during a time of great change, and I'd like to applaud author Lucy Ribchester for writing such a convincing and intriguing debut novel that will undoubtedly receive many more raving reviews!

By Raven The Hourglass Factory by Lucy RibchesterI would like to thank Maia Larson at Pegasus Books for my review copy of this exciting hardback! The year is 1912 and the Ladies Suffragette movement is making waves in London. Fight for the right not only to vote, but to be treated as more than “silly women who don’t know their place;” the women commit various protest crimes that land them in prison. When they go on hunger strikes, they are held down and fed by force.Francesca George, “Frankie,” is a girl reporter for The London Evening Gazette. She prefers trouser suits to skirts or dresses, and shockingly engages in both drinking and smoking cigarettes. Her sympathy is with the suffragettes, but she isn’t an active member. Her latest assignment is to do a picture piece on Miss Ebony Diamond, a trapeze artist and suffragette. She longs for better assignments, and indeed often has better sources, yet her editor Stark gives the stories that should be hers to a man, Teddy Hawkins. He loves to rub this in Frankie’s face.During the course of the book, Ebony is apparently murdered. As it turns out she wasn’t, but someone wearing clothes much like hers was, an Annie Evans. Then Ebony’s friend Oliver Smith, who makes corsets at his shop in Bond Street, is also murdered. By now the official police are investigating the murders, a certain Inspector Fredrick Primrose in charge. The protesting ladies are split into two groups: the suffragettes and the suffragists. The latter group appears to be willing only to do protests that involve no violence. But Mrs. Pankhurst’s group, the suffragettes, is often in prison, facing hard labor, violence from the matrons, and force-feeding.The book is a glimpse into the history of the Suffragette Movement. Many of the events are as written, others based on true events. There is a building of suspense that grows with each line on each page. Some people may not be what they seem to be. As Frankie investigates, she makes new friends that are in the entertainment business just like Ebony Diamond. This is to be expected, but are they really whom they seem to be?The factions making up the Suffragette Movement are faced with more and more serious jail time. The violence begins to escalate out of control. Bombs are being made secretly in the corset shop. But could the suffragettes be being lead like sheep to the slaughter? Primrose finds himself in more danger every day. When the book reaches its startling reveal, the reader will be waiting with bated breath! The book is historical, mysterious, whodunit, and more; but one thing it is never is boring!I give Miss Lucy Ribchester five stars for a work well done!Quoth the Raven…

By Gina Hott Hott Review:I was approached by Professor D to read his book a few days after having a conversation about the helpfulness of martial arts in raising youth. Obviously, I enthusiastically agreed. My husband works in our community through FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and we try to always have resources and/or suggestions for the parents and coaches that come to us to help our youth. So many lines are blurred in today’s society that parenting is tremendously difficult. Parents face challenges that were unheard of previously. We need new way to instill responsibility, accountability, and self-esteem in children. Written with wit and wisdom, Arm Your Child: A Parent’s Guide for Raising Happy, Positive Kids gives adults the tools they need to not only thrive through adolescence but also to become adults we respect. While I didn’t read anything new or earth shattering in Professor D’s book, I think his presentation and personality in Arm Your Child makes it a great resource. His suggestions and techniques are sound, though they won’t work for every child, and applicable in many situations.Arm Your Child: A Parent’s Guide for Raising Happy, Positive Kids is definitely a book for my resource library & I’ll be sharing it with families looking for positive ways to guide their children with the values and atmosphere of a past time.More…Author: Wil Dieck aka Professor DSource: Wil Dieck sent me a review request. Excellent realistic guide for raising gritty kids who get back up no matter how many setbacks By Afia Professor D's views on psychologically arming one's child are consistent with those of John Dewey. Professor D advocates a child-centered approach that parents can use to support the needs and interests of their unique children. There is no one silver bullet technique in the book, probably because of the diversity of individual children. However, many principles are explained with examples so that a parent may understand what he or she is actually doing at a given moment. This is a realistic, practical guide. It's based on the most fundamental parenting skills for raising children.I think the combination of child psychology, martial arts training, NLP and more make this a solid guide for parents. I found that some of my fears and anxieties about parenting dissipated as Professor D explained why failure is necessary for success; children must have courage to take certain risks so that they will learn self-discipline, self-confidence and responsibility (grit).

The author of the book is a karate instructor who uses the ethics in karate as the foundation of this book. I found this to be interesting because I just so happened to have recently put my 7 yr. old in karate class. The author has a lot of really great advice in here. I really love that he gives great examples of how we can put the info into action. The book is very down to earth and practical and gives a lot ideas to think about. I will definitely be reading it again. I highly recommend this book to any and all parents. No matter how old your kids are, you'll find plenty of helpful things in this book.

Sex, drugs, and . . . bug stew? In the vein of The Glass Castle and Wild, Cea Sunrise Person’s compelling memoir of a childhood spent with her dysfunctional counter-culture family in the Canadian wilderness—a searing story of physical, emotional, and psychological survival.

In the late 1960s, riding the crest of the counterculture movement, Cea’s family left a comfortable existence in California to live off the land in the Canadian wilderness. But unlike most commune dwellers of the time, the Persons weren’t trying to build a new society—they wanted to escape civilization altogether. Led by Cea’s grandfather Dick, they lived a pot-smoking, free-loving, clothing-optional life under a canvas tipi without running water, electricity, or heat for the bitter winters.

Living out her grandparents’ dream with her teenage mother Michelle, young Cea knew little of the world beyond her forest. She spent her summers playing nude in the meadow and her winters snowshoeing behind the grandfather she idolized. Despite fierce storms, food shortages, and the occasional drug-and-sex-infused party for visitors, it seemed to be a mostly happy existence. For Michelle, however, now long separated from Cea’s father, there was one crucial element missing: a man. When Cea was five, Michelle took her on the road with a new boyfriend. As the trio set upon a series of ill-fated adventures, Cea began to question both her highly unusual world and the hedonistic woman at the centre of it—questions that eventually evolved into an all-consuming search for a more normal life. Finally, in her early teens, Cea realized she would have to make a choice as drastic as the one her grandparents once had in order to save herself.

While a successful international modeling career offered her a way out of the wilderness, Cea discovered that this new world was in its own way daunting and full of challenges. Containing twenty-four intimate black-and-white family photos, North of Normal is Cea’s funny, shocking, heartbreaking, and triumphant tale of self-discovery and acceptance, adversity, and strength that will leave no reader unmoved.

North of Normal: A Memoir of My Wilderness Childhood, My Unusual Family, and How I Survived Both, by Cea Sunrise Person

Review “Think your family is weird? Cea Sunrise Person slept in a tepee in the Canadian Rockies for most of her childhood, then by age 15 was modeling in Paris. Her memoir, North of Normal, retraces her unique path.” (Cosmopolitan)“Her account of this Alice-in-Wonderland life is rendered with…grace, and without self-pity.” (Elle)“North of Normal contains so many jaw-dropping scenes it makes Jeannette Walls’ childhood (The Glass Castle) look almost conventional.... [it] illuminate[s] family relationships that juxtapose love with torment, and illustrate the power of forgiveness.” (Toronto Star)“A former international model charts her unconventional childhood in the 1960s with a hippie-ish family.…Written with stylistic clarity and studded with family photos, Person’s lucid memories present a stirring scrapbook.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Accounts of early childhood are tricky—too many details and it’s impossible to trust the writer’s memory—but Person navigates the challenge with real grace. Her clear-eyed memoir captures her family’s quest and its collapse without bitterness. ” (Boston Globe)

From the Back Cover

Determined to abandon civilization for a hand-to-mouth existence in the wild, Cea Sunrise Person's charismatic grandfather Papa Dick uproots the Person clan from suburban California to the forests of Canada in the late 1960s, when she is just a baby. Together with her teenage mother, Michelle, Cea will spend the next decade of her life living in and out of canvas tipis with neither electricity nor running water, at the mercy of fierce storms, food shortages, and an array of grown-ups more interested in having a groovy time than in parenting a child.

For Michelle, though, one crucial element is missing: a man. When she strikes out to look for love, spinning from one boyfriend to the next, Cea is forced along for the ride—and into a harsh awakening. Consumed by a desire for a more normal life, she begins to question both her highly unusual world and the hedonistic woman at its center. But the escape she finds, through a career as an internationally successful model, brings its own challenges.

Shocking, heartbreaking, yet often funny and infused with warmth toward her damaged family, this riveting memoir of growing up off the grid (amid multiple generations of dysfunction) describes Person's journey to reclaim her life on her own terms.

About the Author

Cea Sunrise Person, now a happily married mother of three, supported herself from age thirteen to thirty-one as an international model, working primarily in Europe. She lives in Vancouver.

Pure and simple recognition. I was also the product a barely 15 yr old hippie mother with a string of lovers, absentee father, drugs, hippies, drugs, sex, drugs, crime, drugs and mental illness and did I mention drugs? For the children of those who fully embraced the best and worst of the hippy lifestyle and all the craziness that went with it, life can seem foreign even within your own nation. The idealistic intent which never quite lives up to expectation, the poverty and hardship, the extreme reactions to living on the edge and the ability to take absolutely insane situations in stride is a story I know all so well. There is something reaffirming about reading the experiences of others who "get it" but perhaps more importantly, this is a story about resiliency. It would be too easy to blame the mother, who was a victim herself, it would not do justice to the situation to portray it as just another crazy family although clearly mental illness was a very real factor...what makes this story so excellent is the authors ability to realize the positive aspects of her clearly unorthodox upbringing, sort through the rhetoric and pick out the factors that make for self determination and strength.I do not know the author but kudos to you for having the strength to tell your story...in the effort to find and hold on to that much desired "normal" the temptation to never look back is all too real. Despite moving far away from the craziness of early life and upbringing, it takes a great deal of bravery to do what you have done. Family resents your quest for a better/normal life and others simply have no idea where you are coming from.

Surviving an unbelievable hippy youth By Herblady22 Cea Sunrise Person was born to a 16 year old mother and was taken with her mother, and aunts by her Grandpa Dick to live in the wilderness. Grandpa Dick was a charismatic unconventional character who had no problems with browbeating others into his nudist, pot-smoking foul mouthed, free-love lifestyle. The story opens when 5 year old Cea gets up to use the open-air "s*** pit" then peers into her aunts' teepee where she finds that the noise she hears is her aunt doing "the screwing thing" with a visiting man whose girlfriend had apparently taken off. She is feral, without school, underwear or any sense of social deportment. Her mother, after a series of badly chosen lovers would eventually find a con-artist to live with and they went on a spree of his breaking into summer cottages and ripping off equipment with their reluctant participation. When he breaks his back her mother finds other men, one of which tries to sexually abuse her- something that her mother sees through blinders: her daughter should grow up without sexual repression and not be afraid of her urges (not that she felt them.) When she goes back to live with Grandpa Dick, now in the Yukon, he insists on nude yoga, seeing her desire for privacy as shame. By this time she has gone to school, discovered that her lifestyle is far from normal when her schoolmate is in shock at being introduced to a topless mother smoking a joint, and she dreams of normality. Not until she lies about her age (13) and scores a modeling contract with some financial assistance of her birth father, and tries calling her stoned mother from Paris, does she accept that she will never get real mothering. The book is well-written and honest.

"I had become everything he " (Papa Dick) "despised". So states Cea when a daring, resourceful plan to find a modeling job in Paris, works out exceptionally well. And although I realize that she was VERY happy to put her past behind her, it WAS her past that enabled her to have the survival instincts and very wise frame of mind to get her where she was now.Cea began her life living a hippie/survivalist lifestyle in a hand-sewn Tipi with her dysfunctional mother, her survivalist grandfather and grandmother, in a nudist free-love pot-smoking atmosphere, learning how to hunt, fish, survive in the wilderness -- and once she was old enough to realize what was going on around her, learning what SHE wanted -- And DID NOT want (especially her mother's free-loving boyfriends some of whom hit on her and more.)I see that some of the reviewers did not like the nudity, profanity, pot-smoking presented in this book, but as someone who grew up in that "Hippie Era", and had no problem with naked people around me waking thru Central Park or dancing at an outdoor concert, where the air was thick with THAT smoke - and as someone who studied Survival courses and had more than their visits to pit toilets, outhouses and "walks through the forest", it was really just part of life. Of course I had a more stable (but also dysfunctional) family and home to go back to once my weekend adventures were over. So in a way I vicariously lived through the pages of this book and could relate to much of Cea's early narrative.I had nothing but admiration for Cea's wise-beyond-her-years attitude, and how she put up with everything not only in her home with her family, but with what she encountered in Paris -- not all of it fun.....or worth remembering. But as she said, after hanging up on her mother 5,000 miles away -- "I had dealt with it"...."I was absolutely fine, without her" But was Cea really fine? The past eventually catches up with her in on horrifying morning when she wakes up, discovers she had vented her anger at Papa Dick on a boyfriend -- and did not remember a thing. Not only a VERY caring therapist, but then a discovery about her father, a call to her mother, and a few years down the line, a visit with homeless man who practically all but channels her grandfather Dick. This is ENORMOUSLY RICH reading.Inn small way, this book reminded me of another book I recently reviewed "Gone Feral" -- both very good books about a girl growing up living off the land, to be a woman who confronts and works with her past. And as for the advice on the final page, the love that goes around comes around-- thank you Cea, for passing it on to a stranger.

1660: Winter has settled thick over a sleepy village in the Bavarian Alps, ensuring that every farmer and servant is indoors the night a parish priest discovers he’s been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength to scratch a cryptic sign in the frost.

Following a trail of riddles, hangman Jakob Kuisl, his headstrong daughter Magdalena, and the town physician’s son team up with the priest’s aristocratic sister to investigate. What they uncover will lead them back to the Crusades, unlocking a troubled history of internal church politics and sending them on a chase for a treasure of the Knights Templar.

But they’re not the only ones after the legendary fortune. A team of dangerous and mysterious monks is always close behind, tracking their every move, speaking Latin in the shadows, giving off a strange, intoxicating scent. And to throw the hangman off their trail, they have made sure he is tasked with capturing a band of thieves roving the countryside, attacking solitary travelers and spreading panic.

Delivering on the promise of the international bestseller The Hangman’s Daughter, Oliver Pötzsch takes us on a whirlwind tour through the occult hiding places of Bavaria’s ancient monasteries. Once again based on prodigious historical research into Pötzsch’s family tree, The Dark Monk brings to life an unforgettable, compassionate hangman and his tenacious daughter, painting a robust tableau of a seventeenth-century Bavaria and quickening our pulses with a gripping, mesmerizing mystery.

The Dark Monk (The Hangman's Daughter), by Oliver Pötzsch

From Publishers Weekly The brutality and ignorance of 17th-century Bavaria serves as the backdrop for Pötzsch's thrilling second whodunit featuring an unlikely trio of sleuths (after 2011's The Hangman's Daughter). When the parish priest, Andreas Koppmeyer, eats some poisoned doughnuts after sealing up a mysterious something in his church basement, he manages to scratch a mark on the frost covering a gravestone as he expires. Figuring out what that dying clue means and who doctored the pastries falls to Altenstadt hangman Jakob Kuisl; his daughter, Magdalena, an apprentice midwife; and her suitor, Simon Fronwieser, a doctor's son. Fronwieser links a Latin phrase seen in a crypt with the Templars, raising the possibility that Koppmeyer stumbled on a secret relating to that shadowy society. Meanwhile, the depredations of a gang of robbers threaten local commerce. Fans of Michael Gregorio's early 19th-century Prussian series (Unholy Awakening, etc.) will find a lot to enjoy.

From Booklist Originally published in Germany in 2009, this sequel to The Hangman’s Daughter begins in January 1660 with the murder of a priest and takes readers on a wild adventure to uncover the secret of a long-hidden (and possibly mythical) treasure of the Knights Templar. Potzsch does an excellent job of plunking the reader down in seventeenth-century Germany; Jakob Kuisl, the town hangman, and his daughter, Magdalena, don’t seem like made-up characters in a fictional landscape but, rather, like real people in a real place (in fact, the Kuisl family of executioners actually existed, and Potzsch is descended from them). The author supplies enough historical detail to give readers a good sense of the time and place but not too much to risk boring them with unnecessary details. Readers will also appreciate the nice balance between drama, suspense, and humor: this is a serious story, Potzsch seems to be saying, but it's OK to have some fun with it. At least two more books in the series are forthcoming, and they will be most welcome.

Advance Praise for The Dark Monk

With enough mystery and intrigue to satisfy those who like gritty historical fiction, The Dark Monk has convincing characters, rip-roaring action, and finely-drawn settings." —Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches and the forthcoming Shadow of Night

The Dark Monk is a fantastic follow up to The Hangman's Daughter. Again, he brings the world of Jakob Kuisl, the hangman of Schongau, vividly to life. His characters are well crafted, the story is a maze of mystery and intrigue with a dash of romance. I adore Magdalena, Jakob's daughter. She is a passionate, intelligent woman who I admire for her strength of character. Her lover Simon, the town doctor, is certainly a more interesting character because of her presence in his life. If not for her, he'd be just another small town doctor who cares far too much for his appearance. She gives him depth, and he gives her an ounce of respectability, which is virtually impossible for a woman in her social position in that time period. Being the daughter of the hangman was certainly a fact that made people fear her, and gave her little options in life. Her relationship with Simon really mixes things up a bit in this story, especially when the beautiful Benedikta Koppmeyer arrives in town. This story centers on the murder of a priest, and the confounding clues he leaves behind. We are swept into the world of the Knights Templar, their secrets and mysteries that have made them so fascinating throughout history, are laid bare here, and are center stage in this well crafted tale.I look forward to further installments in the Hangman's Daughter series. Thank you Mr. Potzsch, for creating these fascinating characters! This is truly a 5-star success!

A fun but not convincing tale By loce_the_wizard Oliver Pötzsch used the motif of the mystery novel and applies it to "The Dark Monk: A Hangman's Daughter Tale," set in 1660. It's winter with a capital "W" in the Bavarian Alps. The story takes us and his characters from village to village with excursions through the countryside and to a series of monasteries. The plot is set in motion when a poisoned priest uses his dying wits and strength to leave a clue that proves a gateway into a bigger mystery, drawing in the stalwart trio of hangman, executioner, and healer Jakob Kuisl; his somewhat stubborn but attractive daughter Magdalena; and the town physician's son who is a bit of a dandy but smart as a whip, Simon. But while this mystery is the story's center, other events are also crucial, chiefly, a group robbers are preying on travelers, particularly merchants and their cargos, and a deadly illness is killing many of the villagers.Along with the murdered priest's sister, this group follows a trail of various clues and riddles, each leading to more answers and more questions. Tracking this core group is a trio of murderous monks (not sure which one is actually the dark monk of the title), various church leaders, and another trio of soldiers-for-hire. As you might imagine, murder, mayhem, kidnapping, and so forth ensue. The story seems as though the scenes were staged for a play or graphic novel with characters tripping over each other in unexpectedly places. I thought that the plot and resolution hinged on a series of increasingly unlikely coincidences playing out and bringing the characters back together in, for me, an ultimately unsatisfactory resolution. In other words, my "willing suspension of disbelief" could only go so far before I felt like the author was winking at me instead of making the story really resolve itself.I thought "The Dark Monk: A Hangman's Daughter Tale" was a fun but not convincing tale. The characters seemed a bit cartoonish to me, the settings a bit too sketchy, and the plot a bit too twisted.

Fun and addictive to read By Lucky Clucker When I read some of the reviews of the first book in this series (The Hangman's Daughter) I was both intrigued and worried. It sounded like an interesting period to set a mystery-type series, but some of the reviewers seemed to think the book was both anachronistic and ahistorical in certain ways. That may have been true of the first book (I can't say, as I haven't yet read it) but it certainly isn't true of this one.I found The Dark Monk to be fast-paced and interesting without sacrificing the feel of the era in which the story is set. The pace of actual events may take place at 17th century speed, but the interactions and descriptions of the various character's mental workings was very well-written and entertaining. The book has several interesting characters and you get to hear the story from their point of view in different chapters. The main characters are Jakob (the hangman), Magdalena (his daughter) and Simon (what passes for a doctor in the 17th century).Jakob is the kind of iconoclastic detective I'm a real sucker for. He is going to do things his own way and ultimately will rely chiefly on his own counsel, even though he allows Simon and Magdalena brief glimpses into what is going on in his head.Simon is the kind of character who you alternately like, pity, despise, and then like again. He can be vain and flawed, but he also realizes his short comings and exhibits humanity during a period of time when people had to scratch and claw 24/7 just to keep going.Magdalena alternates between fierce pride that she is the hangman's daughter and dangerous despair that her position in her village will prevent her from having what she wants in life-- namely, Simon. The murder is grisly enough and the intrigue is fun and involves Templar Knights-- what could be better than Templars and treasure?!I laughed out loud several times and really enjoyed the voice the author employs when writing as Jakob. The humor is dry and sophisticated while still maintaining an earthy tone.Is it likely that these type of folks would have books (exceedingly rare for even those in the highest of social circles) and have the leisure and ability to actually read them? The writing is so good that I can stretch disbelief far enough to believe it. I also believe the humor and slang in the book are representative of the time. "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel," was written over 100 years earlier than the time this book is supposed to be set and it contains similar bawdy and sly humor.I loved this book and I will be buying the first book in this series. If you enjoy the murder mystery genre and have books by authors like Cruz-Smith, Nesbo, and Chandler on your shelf I think you will like this one, too.

He also has a powerful affinity for painting crazy/dark canvasses, quirky foreign films, and his seven-string Ibanez guitar, Beelzebub. J Edward currently lives in the 'burbs of North Georgia, where he moonlights as a foodie, a sipper of too much pinot noir, and the most cantankerous member of his small but beloved family.

The Arab of the Future, the #1 French best-seller, tells the unforgettable story of Riad Sattouf's childhood, spent in the shadows of 3 dictators―Muammar Gaddafi, Hafez al-Assad, and his father

In striking, virtuoso graphic style that captures both the immediacy of childhood and the fervor of political idealism, Riad Sattouf recounts his nomadic childhood growing up in rural France, Gaddafi's Libya, and Assad's Syria--but always under the roof of his father, a Syrian Pan-Arabist who drags his family along in his pursuit of grandiose dreams for the Arab nation.

Riad, delicate and wide-eyed, follows in the trail of his mismatched parents; his mother, a bookish French student, is as modest as his father is flamboyant. Venturing first to the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab State and then joining the family tribe in Homs, Syria, they hold fast to the vision of the paradise that always lies just around the corner. And hold they do, though food is scarce, children kill dogs for sport, and with locks banned, the Sattoufs come home one day to discover another family occupying their apartment. The ultimate outsider, Riad, with his flowing blond hair, is called the ultimate insult… Jewish. And in no time at all, his father has come up with yet another grand plan, moving from building a new people to building his own great palace.

Brimming with life and dark humor, The Arab of the Future reveals the truth and texture of one eccentric family in an absurd Middle East, and also introduces a master cartoonist in a work destined to stand alongside Maus and Persepolis.

Review

L.A. Times Book Prize Finalist

"One of the most prominent cartoonists in the world right now."―Smithsonian

“Exquisitely illustrated, and filled with experiences of misfortune bordering on the farcical, Mr. Sattouf’s book is a disquieting yet essential read.” ―Carmela Ciuraru, The New York Times

“The Arab of the Future has become that rare thing in France’s polarized intellectual climate: an object of consensual rapture, hailed as a masterpiece in the leading journals of both the left and the right. . . . it has, in effect, made Sattouf the Arab of the present in France.”―Adam Shatz, The New Yorker

“As the very young Riad Sattouf navigates life in Libya, France, and Syria, he gets a serious education in the mysterious vectors of power that shape not just the political world, but the intimate sphere of his own family. With charming yet powerful drawings and vivid sensory details, Sattouf delivers a child’s-eye view of the baffling adult world in all its complexity, corruption, and delusion. This is a beautiful, funny, and important graphic memoir.”―Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home

“The hundred-and-fifty-odd pages of Riad Sattouf’s internationally bestselling graphic memoir . . . move with an irrepressible comic velocity. The book is told Candide-style . . . an indictment of the adult world and its insidious methods of diminishment we all have either faced or been fortunate enough to escape.”―The New Republic

“Engaging and lovely to look at . . . Sattouf has an eye for grimly funny details . . . and milks the disjunction between how he experienced his political environment at the time and how he understands it now for all it's worth.”―Douglas Wolk, Los Angeles Times

“Sattouf’s work is laced with astute observations of human beings. His memoirs often dwell on their failings: hypocrisy, cowardice, bullying. Yet there’s humour too – mainly because his humans are so helplessly absurd.”―The Guardian

“The Arab of the Future is already being compared to biographical classics like Maus and Persepolis, and the modern relevance of the countries in which it is set is sure to make this a widely talked about book this year.”―Mentalfloss.com

“The Arab of the Future maintains a balance of comedy and commentary and …is carried by excellent drawings. Riad Sattouf’s work takes its place alongside other classic animated retrospective memoirs from the region, Persepolis . . . and Waltz with Bashir.”―The New York Journal of Books

“Seriously funny and penetratingly honest, Riad Sattouf tells the epic story of his eccentric and troubled family. Written with tenderness, grace, and piercing clarity, The Arab of the Future is one of those books that transcend their form to become a literary masterpiece.”―Michel Hazanavicius, director of The Artist

“The Arab of the Future is a beautifully cartooned story that is both modern and timeless. The protagonist is one of the most endearing in comics. An important book, not just as art but as a window into another culture.”―Gene Luen Yang, author of American Born Chinese

“The Arab of the Future confirms Riad Sattouf’s place among the greatest cartoonists of his generation.”―Le Monde

“Engrossing . . . Sattouf writes in a fluid prose, beautifully translated by Sam Taylor.”―Laila Lalami, The New York Times Book Review (Editor’s Choice)

“In his comics, Sattouf deftly weaves the political background with the everyday. He tells a personal story but also observes the society and country around him, and his great sense of humor makes reading the book thoroughly enjoyable. It’ll have you laughing to the point of tears.”―Haaretz

“Very funny and very sad . . . the social commentary here is more wistful and melancholy than sharp-edged . . . subtly written and deftly illustrated, with psychological incisiveness and humor.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Sattouf’s account of his childhood is a deeply personal recollection of a peripatetic youth that can resonate with audiences across the world. It also paints an incisive picture of the Arab world in the late 1970s and early 1980s that sets the stage for the revolutionary changes that would grip and roil the region decades later.”―Foreign Policy

“Wide-eyed, yet perceptive, the book documents the wanderings of [Sattouf’s] mismatched parents―his bookish French mother and pan-Arabist father, Abdel-Razak Sattouf . . . often disquieting, but always honest.”―France 24

“Despite his father’s determination to integrate his son into Arab society, little Sattouf―with his long blond hair―never fully fits in, and this report reads like the curious pondering of an alien from another world. Caught between his parents, Sattouf makes the best of his situation by becoming a master observer and interpreter, his clean, cartoonish art making a social and personal document of wit and understanding.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review, Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2015)

I gave it 4 stars because the graphics are great, and the sarcasm/humor is on point. No one can say otherwise. However, being an Arab and a Muslim myself, I feel torn about where I stand. Yes, this is a satiric account of a boy's life moving around between Libya, Syria and France. A boy who was born to a Syrian father and a French mother. It bothered me how acquiescent the mother seemed to be, it was actually quite annoying. For someone who is not Arab and was not raised in the Middle East, to give up her life so readily for an extremely politically opinionated Syrian man and live the life she has (according to Riad's account that is), it was frustrating. He portrayed her as a woman without a voice.Of course, this is only his account, and I can't be sure how credible or accurate it all is. I mean, we are talking about the life of a boy from the age of 2 to the age of about 6 years old. How can he remember his life at that age in such detail? And if he didn't and this is all based on experiences described by his family (mom, dad, grandparents etc.), then how accurate are those memories? Everyone remembers the same incident differently, so you can never actually be sure. In that sense, this memoir immediately lacks some of its credibility. On the other hand, there's the whole idea of simply taking things at face value and learning to laugh at oneself. And that's something Arabs are not very good at doing. We don't know how to laugh at ourselves and not take things too seriously. Myself included. We don't know how to be satirical or ironic, and those who do - such as Riad here - are always judged and looked at with mild disdain. We also tend to quickly take offense and attack. This book is full of satire, that's for sure. It highlights some key traditions and customs of Arabs - specifically Muslims. Such as the prayers and eating together and so on. I found myself having to constantly remind myself that this is a memoir dating back to early 1980s when things were very different back then. The fact is, nothing portrayed in the book is completely out of line (except we don't go around beating animals or killing them, even Arabs are horrified by those children's actions), and yet I still caught myself occasionally being offended.I've finished reading this book and I've made a conscious decision not to go looking for the other installments.

By Ann Bodle-nash This graphic novel is a window into culture and national identity and living conditions for one multi-national child, pulled back and forth between France, Syria and Libya. We feel his pain, especially in the current confusing times. Particularly poignant after Nov 13th in Paris when all are evaluating religion, fanaticism in France and Syria. Timely, moving. Part One of three. The drawings and dialogue are excellently rendered. This artist is well known in France and should be in the world.

The insights here are deeply real, very personal. You just want to know more -- how and why is this marriage holding together? When will it end and how? At times, this is a very painful account of a family in some very strange circumstances. It is also the amusing perspective of a tiny, quirky outsider who is forced to bridge different worlds. The insights into the Arabic mindset are electrifying and especially relevant. I will be looking for the next book. Superb.

A bad boy can make a girl feel so good.

Grace’s attraction to her new web designer, amateur boxer and all-around playboy, Ryan Granger, is off the charts. But the bad boy of programming is not someone she needs to get entangled with. She’s got too many responsibilities and no time for games. She has deadlines to meet and a sick father to care for. Ryan is tempting, but being with him is completely unrealistic. Still, a girl can fantasize, right?

Ryan wants Grace badly, but while he’s building her website, they have to keep things strictly professional. Thankfully, walking her home during a city-wide blackout is on his own time and whatever happens in the dark doesn’t count. He’s falling hard for Grace and he is a man used to winning. The only problem is, he’s got to convince her that he’s worthy of her trust.

About the Author

When I was young, I wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up. But then I changed my mind because being a famous, yet totally undercover secret agent would be much cooler. I looked into it, but there weren’t many job opportunities. I thought for a while and concluded that maybe I should just marry well. People make whole careers of that. I fell deeply in love with Agent Mulder, but he already had Scully, and I don’t share.

So, instead, I became a writer.

Now I get to be all of those things and so many more.

By Simona Elena Book provided by the author in exchange for an honest reviewA Kiss in the Dark was my first book by Lisa Fox and I’m glad I picked it up. It’s a novella and what I really liked about this one, was that the reader was thrown right into the story.Grace is an author and meets Ryan when she needs a new website. He’s her web designer and their are instantly drawn to each other. The tension between them was really high, but Grace has her deadlines to meet and her sick father to care for.Ryan is a boxer and he is a bit of a playboy. That changes when he meets Grace, he is drawn to her. They spend more and more time together and loved how he changed because of her, a real transformation to a caring and attentice guy. When they hit it off, the story was full of passion and chemistry, I loved their scenes. But of course Ryan’s past came to haunt him. Did he really change and was Grace able to forget he past and trust his feelings?I liked that we got a glimpse of both their feelings, so they took turns telling the story. Also great was that while Grace was writing her book she had Ryan as an inspiration. Some parts of the storyline seemed a bit too much and over the top form e, but I still really really liked it. There were some hot, steamy and sexy scenes, which was great! I definitely want to read more books by Lisa soon!

Grace and Ryan are likeably imperfect and easy to warm to. The story's New York setting adds an extra dimension and makes the couple's unlikely meeting plausible.Ryan is a web designer who also enjoys boxing. His fashionable job and trendy hobby, ramp up the escapism value of this story. Grace, a successful writer has family issues, which make her insular and guilty. Playboy Ryan is the perfect man to let her live a little. Something every girl needs. The scenes with Grace's father are poignant, realistic and sensitively written.Despite the story's brevity, both character's develop as a result of their interaction and the romantic ending is worthy of them and their emotional journey.I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
