Have you ever read the words of Jesus and asked yourself, 'how am I supposed to pull that off'? In this 'Making Faith Practical' ebook, we are going to explore what Jesus challenges us with in the Beatitudes. Ideas like 'blessed are the poor' and 'the meek shall inherit' the earth are phrases we've probably heard before; but how can we actually apply them to our everyday life? If we believe that God loves us as his children and wants the best for us, then the challenges he gives us are not to make us feel bad or to be a burden on us, but they are given to us for our own benefit. This book engages in the discussion on how we can let the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:3-10 transform us into the best version of ourselves possible.

This book makes things practical. So often do authors hide their words in glitter and glam until readers have a difficult time even understand what the point is. Not here. In the words of another author I admire Thomas expertly "puts handles on" spiritual practices and concepts that can easily confuse new and seasoned people in the faith.Have your finger in the pulse of this author, I'm sure we can be expecting some great things in the future.

Central Theme to Christian Living By Darryl Beckett In his book, Making Faith Practical: The Beatitudes, I believe TC unlocks the central theme to more than the beatitudes. I believe TC unlocks the only way to have a healthy vibrant life with Jesus Christ and that's total dependency upon Him. TC writes in a manner which is easy to understand yet exposes profound truths that everyone can live by.

I learned many things about Loving God more and helping others. In this book TC shows us we are not perfect, but God will always be there for us. Following God leads us in the right direction. I think the book is wonderful and everyone will not only enjoy reading the book, but will come closer to God.

His is personal to the depths of his heart as we are introduced into his life, his life as a dad, the birth of his child, his views of dad-hood and parenthood and so on. The reader may question why such practices of labor assistance in hospitals is the "norm" , like the amount of drugs given and why, or as when the hospital midwife (as opposed to a birthing center midwife) says NOT to push?!! But this is the majority. He rambles on a bit in his views, his center of the dad universe, but these are his confessions, and his confessions and learnings take us through topics of what to maybe expect as dad, in all its glorious mess. He may say that "life is over as you know it" but at the same time, life begins a new path for this 21st Century Dad. Now, mind you, he is not THE 21st Century dad, he is but one, as every dad as his OWN story, but Daniel Rourke had the time (when?) to write this and to share his own confessions, and I applaud him for that.

My husband can relate greatly, as we compare our fathers and how we were raised to what's more common today with fatherhood. It's funny and completely honest, covering an array of topics that come along with raising children. Good read for an expecting father (or mother!).

The violent account of one man's rise to notoriety as an infamous gunfighter of the Old American West.In 1846, Nathan Delaney is only eight years old, when he is caught up in the turbulent struggle of the Mexican-American war. Travelling with a troop of Texas Rangers, Nathan quickly loses his innocence and childhood in the harsh, arid wastes of the Texas borderland in a series of brutal skirmishes between the hard-bitten Rangers and their Indian and Mexican foes. The war on the border is every bit as grim and brutal as the landscape it is fought over, and there are acts of savagery and torture on both sides. It is neither a time nor a place for a small boy, and with the Ranger troop surrounded on all sides and greatly outnumbered, Nathan must quickly learn to outgrow the boy in order to survive. Twenty years later, in the aftermath of another bloody and brutal conflict - the Civil War - Nathan is trying his best to put the years he has spent as a Confederate guerrilla fighter behind him. He has arrived in the small town of Taylor's Mill, with a view to settling down to a life of peace and prosperity. Fate, in the form of a beautiful young woman, and an unwanted confrontation with some of the town's rougher elements, conspires against him however, and Nathan is soon forced to go on the run. With a string of Bounty Hunters dogging his trail, Texas seems the ideal place to head for, and once there, Nathan is given the opportunity to range even further by joining the famous Montana cattle drive, led by the legendary Nelson Story. With nothing to look forward to except stampedes, flooded river crossings and multiple confrontations with hostile bandits and Indians - and with a particularly determined Bounty Hunter still dogging his trail - Nathan will have plenty of cause to wonder whether he has made the right choice or not. About the Author: Daniel Cassidy Daniel Cassidy was born and is still living in Liverpool, UK. He has a keen interest in military history in general, and a specific interest in the history of the Old American West. He is a collector (and shooter) of Western period fire-arms, with a great interest in firearm history and development, and is also an avid participant in the popular sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. Daniel has been (very happily) married for the last 42 years to his lovely wife Evelyn. They have been blessed with three strapping boys-Steven, Sean and Nathan (all now fully grown) and two wonderful grandsons-Liam and Daniel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really was engrossed - the writing is fantastic and the characters come to life pretty quickly where ... By Stephen I was recently commssioned by the author (Dan Cassidy) to paint a portrait of one of his cowboy heroes, Lee Marvin as "Monte Walsh", and he kindly gave me a copy of "Pistol Man" after I discovered he was an author through our conversations. What a lovely gesture. .Now, I'm not much of a reader these days and I'm not a big westerns-fan so I aimed to try and get through at least 3 or 4 chapters so I could at least say to Dan "well done, well written etc", out of politeness I guess (whether it's art, writing, or music, I think if it's done by someone we know, we are always kinder in our criticism). So I prepared myself to get through the first few pages with an open mind and a critical eye heavily-biased in Dan's favour....Within that first paragraph of the opening excerpt from Nathan Delaney's childhood (the main character), I was immediately absorbed and it instantly escaped my mind that I was reading the work of someone I know! WOW! I mean, I really was engrossed - the writing is fantastic and the characters come to life pretty quickly where you subconsciously grow an attachment to them (I liked 'Matthew" the best, if I was in a battle I'd want him on my side). The attention to detail is superb (whether it's historical/geographical accuracies or the description of the weapons used within the MANY battles) and is concise enough to not bore the reader like some novels can when details and scene-setting goes overboard. So, any biased praise I planned to show Dan was soon forgotten, replaced by genuine admiration and gobsmacked-ness (probably not a word but I'm no author!)Ironically, the painting I was doing for Dan was put on the backburner as I committed my time to delve further into the fascinating life and adventures of Nathan Delaney, a man who I never warmed to and even at one point despised him after his thoughtless actions lead to some tragic consequences. So this again was something that really surprised me, I expected the writing to be pretty biased in Nathan's favour but it's not - it's a brutally honest account and an absolutely fantastic read! 10/10 and no mistake! I finished it within a matter of days and I now look eagerly forward to Dan Cassidy's next novel which I will be one of the first to buy for sure. Tremendous writer!Stephen Mahoney

International Latino Award in the category "best mystery novel" and an honorable mention for "best adventure novel". Three million copies sold worldwide by the so-called "queen of the Spanish adventure fiction" and one of the top writers in the Spanish language.

Holy relics are disappearing from sacred spots around the world, and the Vatican will do whatever it takes to stop enterprising thieves from stealing what is left of the scattered and miniscule splinters of the true cross the Catholic Church has in its possession.

Dr. Ottavia Salina, a brilliant paleographer, toils at her classified workspace deep within Vatican City, analyzing and restoring some of the world's most valuable religious artifacts, until she is called upon by the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church and commissioned with a mysterious new assignment: She is to decipher the strange tattoos - seven Greek letters and seven crosses - found on an Ethiopian man's corpse. Next to what was left of the body were three pieces of wood - suspected by Vatican scholars to be fragments of the Vera Cruz, actual splinters from the cross on which Christ was crucified.

With the help of the captain of the Pope's infamous Swiss Guard and a renowned archaeologist from Alexandria, Dr. Salina is able to uncover a shocking truth: For hundreds of years, a secret brotherhood that refers to itself as the Staurofilakes, headed by a mysterious figure called Cato, has been hiding the true cross and means to gather all remaining fragments for themselves. The markings on the Ethiopian corpse, they soon discover, correspond with each of the seven deadly sins, and are part of the complicated, possibly deadly initiation ritual used to deem candidates worthy of membership into the brotherhood.

By ellen At first I resisted getting this book, because I thought it was another DaVinci Code knockoff - then I saw it was written BEFORE Dan Brown's hit novel, and got it. And boy, am I glad I did! Beware if you are interested in this book, not to look too hard at the book description printed on this book's Amazon computer page - it has a big plot spoiler in it - But the book is wonderful, and is the 3rd book I literally was upset to finish! (The first was Angels and Demons, the second was Carved in Bone)As an English major, I was familiar with Dante's The Divine Comedy - not my favorite work - but Dante did for this quest what Leonardo did for Brown's book. The quest, dealing with pieces of the Holy Cross that Jesus was crucified on, takes us on a grand adventure in many wonderful cities - As a Greek Orthodox Christian, was glad there were many accurate descriptions of different sites and priests - even the Patriarch in Constantinople - Also my name is deals with Helen and Constantine, so I was more tweeked with curiosity . The only thing I didn't like, and this was due to translation issues, is they especially at the beginning kept calling our churches as temples - Some folks still think we worship Zeus in temples, and in the translation the word church was printed as temple - but if that's the greatest thing wrong with this book no prob. Also beware, the chapters are 40 pages+ or so - This is a wonderful book filled with adventure, history, romance, and just about everything that makes you pick up a book and read it - This is definitely worth reading!!!!!!!!!

It turned out to be one of those books you are actually dissapointed when it ends and there isn't a sequal. The charachters are fantastic! It's been a long time since I've read a book where the people in it were very real and alive. Asensi did a beautiful job in that. Regardless of the other reviews that complain about the translation, I had no problem whatsoever with it. It flowed and read like a well written novel should. The plot was gripping and the history and descriptions of all the places were so well done. The ending was just a bit, well, kind of sappy, so the 4 stars instead of 5, but that by no means took away any of the enjoyment I got from reading it. If you like history, travel and a good thriller, you will like this book.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Sorry .... I couldn't believe it By Peter A. Kimball This book lies at the epicenter of a triangle whose vertices are "The DaVinci Code", "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", and "The Magic Flute". I hasten to note that "The Last Cato" was written before Dan Brown's novel, so, when the narrator, Dr. Ottavio Salina, the famous paleographer, is recruited by her superiors at the Vatican to untangle a centuries-old religious conspiracy, and you say "this is just like Robert Langdon, the symbologist", remember that Asensi is not borrowing from Brown. Although I wouldn't at all be surprised to find out that Ms. Asensi saw the Indiana Jones movie! Don't buy this in expectation of bloody climaxes and killer Nazi/Opus Dei guys though. I cited Mozart for a reason.I have a bias toward novels with elaborate scholarly puzzles in them, so when find out from a book jacket that the protagonists are going to decode Dante and track down the True Cross, I am full of anticipatory pleasure as we plunge into Codices and Byzantine history and archaeological digs. But ultimately I can't recommend the book. I'm willing to suspend a lot of disbelief for this kind of thing, but ultimately Ms. Asensi just asks too much.I'm not even talking only about how vast in scope and flawless in execution this previously undetected age-old conspiracy has to be, or how they are supposed to get Universal Studios-style special effects with Graeco-Roman technology. I can grumble about that, but I can live with it if I have to.But even more unbelievable is the social psychology of it all. Do you believe, for example, that it's possible to develop a series of physical and mental ordeals such that "those who pass them [are] incapable of doing gratuitous, senseless harm"? If that were so, wouldn't the Green Berets be going around doing good like Franciscan monks? It's not a problem for it if a character believes such things, but it gets to be a problem when the author does.Throughout the book, people act like nobody would really act, both on an individual level and as collectives and institutions. I'm talking not only about the adventurer protagonists -- I'm talking about the Vatican itself, which supposedly wants them to find "the answer" and would rather they not die halfway through, but when it comes down to it is repeatedly content to send them off to hunt like so many ferrets sent down a badger hole and wait passively for their return. At one point, for instance, the protagonists are stuck in what amounts to a hedge maze. Nobody has thought to bring in a cell phone, or a GPS locator, or a satellite photograph of the area. They could have. Nobody on the outside apparently feels like doing anything to make sure they aren't dead, like looking for them with a helicopter (they HAVE helicopters). For some reason, everybody is "sticking to the rules", as if Salina and company were out for a day of orienteering or something. And the whole book is like this. Of course we all realize that the author wants us to concentrate on the puzzles and challenges, and that it might be a poor piece of fiction if they just blasted through everything with rock drills and the Air Force and so on, but you have to have some plausible reason why people act as they do, don't you?I know what has happened here, really - the author has gotten overly focused on the intellectual problems involved; she has worked hard to create a set of puzzles and she thinks that by doing so she has done all the work she really has to. But I disagree. Creating a novel is a puzzle of a different kind - somehow you have to put the pieces together in a way that makes the reader think that this sort of thing might really happen. (Leaving aside obvious fantastic/allegorical fiction, that is.) I don't think Ms. Asensi devoted nearly enough attention to this last step.

1967 – The Summer of Love – As the counter-culture revolution erupted across the western world, long-haired, pot smoking hippies infested major cities, college campuses, and small towns with loud music and a social consciousness that exploded into the anti-war movement. Political and social norms were trounced by a generation devoted to sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. Dealer follows a brash young entrepreneur who recognized the potential and built a robust and illicit chain to import from the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, and Asia to supply a budding market from coast to coast.

I can’t wait for the movie By boomer Dealer is not your typical story about a local 60s hippy dippy weed peddler selling his stash from the back of an aging Cadillac. Dealer is about a business. An import business. A marijuana import business that grows from a modest entrepreneurial organization, to a global distribution network that takes you on a journey from the Caribbean, South America, Asia and all points in between.Quite honestly, this book was difficult to put down. Mr. Stiller captured the late-sixties social, political (and yes, sexual) revolution that defined the decade. The characters are well defined. And as the business grows, there is plenty of adventure that will captivate your senses.A great read! I can’t wait for the movie!

Stiller’s book took me back to my 20s and brought back images from the ‘60s that got lost in the memory banks. Whether or not you participated in the music, drugs, or sex of that decade, Dealer guides you through many of the “adventures” that we shared as Hippies. This book is probably as good a history lesson as it is a highly entertaining novel. You should make a point of reading Stiller’s Dealer for the story, the authenticity, and the excellent writing.

The development of the characters and the descriptive adventures written about made this an entertaining, interesting and educational read. I found myself caring for characters I didn't think I would when first introduced. I look forward to reading a sequel. Write on Mr. Stiller write on...........

Grace Livingston Hill (April 16, 1865 — 1947) was an early 20th-century novelist and wrote both under her real name and the pseudonym Marcia Macdonald. She wrote over 100 novels and numerous short stories. Her characters were most often young female Christian women or those who become so within the confines of the story.

60 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Enchanted Barn By A Customer This is the first GLH book I ever read and it remains my favorite, after having read most of the others. Again, we have a poor family--father deceased, mother very ill, numerous children--being taken care of by the oldest daughter on her small stenographer's salary. The dilemma is that their cheap rented house is about to be torn down so they must move in a few weeks. But how can they do this without money? Taking her only savings (10 cents), the oldest daughter takes advantage of an unexpected afternoon off from work to ride the train out to the country in the faint hope of finding something suitable and affordable. Once well out in the country, she overhears a conversation between other travelers about a barn in sight from the train tracks, and decides to get a closer look. Impossible though it seems to her at first, the lovely setting seems to be just what is needed to regain her mother's health and provide the children with space to play outdoors. Quickly tracking down the owner, she meets with his handsome son and timidly proposes the rental of the barn for their home. He is immediately sensitive to her dignity and hesitancy and need, and goes out of his way to help her and her family. The description of the barn remodeling is fun, with several side stories and characters. The romance is slow in developing, but results in the usual GLH happy ending.

There are many, many missing pages and the last several pages of the book are not included!!! How does it end? If you care, don't buy from this supplier.Absolutely appalling that this lousy copy would make its way to Amazon!

50 of 54 people found the following review helpful. I'm sorry I didn't read the reviews before buying. By Betty Campbell I love the Grace Livingston Hill books. The woman says things in books that I've never ever heard anyone talking about. I love her boldness. I own two shelves of her books. If I heard of any more of them, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. But not this edition. I was so disappointed with all the rotten work that whoever put into it to get it into digital shape. I even wrote a letter to Amazon to complain. They sent me back a letter telling me to write them a letter, noting each page and line position telling them what the type actually said, and what it should be changed to. (I may not be remembering accurately here...but it was something "like" that. So I began to read the enchanted barn story all over again. I made many notations. But then I suddenly realized that my job is not as an editor. I am not a typesetter. All I am is a customer. Phooey on them!I thought by putting it on my Kindle that I was in seventh heaven. Putting my favorite author into a format that was easy to read and to have always in good condition without having to be concerned with the pages coming out of the spine. Or old paper being fragile. But this book? Lousy. thank you. It is not the author. I repeat: it is not the author. It just makes me super sad that whoever did such a bad job on the book actually got paid good money for doing it. Amazon, you took an excellent book and allowed somebody to really do a very poor job of making it digital.I suggest that you go ahead and spend the money and buy an actual paper book. Then when it gets old, and the pages start falling out, just buy another paper book. I am quite tolerant of bad typesetting. But when it happens up to several times a page....I'm done with it. This is bad.

The author Ashley Smith used her own life storms to help other women such as myself over come bad break ups. She told her story which many women have the same story and she went to the word of God to help her see what a relationship between a man and a woman should be like. Thank you Ashley for sharing your story and for telling us what God says about relationships. Your book and the word of God has helped me to walk away from a relationship that surely was not ordained by God. God Bless you always!!

When Killers Cry is a thriller set in 1981 South Africa during the turbulent and violent apartheid years. While it is a work of fiction, it is based on facts and in events that actually happened. A fast-paced, action packed story that shows the true effect of the Nationalist Government's racist policies, which affected people of all colours, creeds and races. The author grew up in South Africa during this time and it is based on her memories and experiences, plus subsequent research into that period of history. It's 1981 and South Africa is in the grip of apartheid. The ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, is stepping up violent retaliation; detentions, strikes and riots are increasing daily. Reporter Hannah Smith, stumbles into a quagmire of political conspiracy when she begins investigating the deaths of black activists and dissidents. What she learns puts her life and that of her friends and family in danger. No one can be trusted, not even Tom Maartens, the police detective who has been helping her. With the support of her friend Themba Ntini, a black journalist working covertly, and illegally, alongside her, and best friend Dani, Hannah uncovers a plot that, if it succeeds, will plunge the country into a chasm from which there will be no return.

Excellent story that leads to some understanding of that tumultuous time By Gary van Eck As a young adult growing up in the era that the book is set in, I found it a riveting and well written story that was very easy to relate to. For those outside South Africa who never experienced that tumultuous time first hand it will help to understand the psyche of protagonists on both sides, and the many innocents caught inbetween.

High jinks, close calls, and adventures worthy of Don Quixote abound in this light-hearted romp through the West from Win Blevins, winner of the Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Contributions to Western Literature Shakespeare, a former actor of gargantuan proportions, and his sidekick, Silk, a rail-thin teenager with all the brains that Shakespeare lacks, are two of the most improbable mountain men ever to explore the Rocky Mountains. Together, they get into flabbergasting scrapes, from wrestling bears to falling in love with off-limits women in Santa Fe. Silk and Shakespeare are fictional, but they ride alongside real historical figures such as Antelope Jim Beckwourth, the biracial son of a Virginia plantation owner who became a warrior chief of the Crow Indians, and his lover, Pine Leaf, a legendary woman warrior. This unlikely foursome gets into jams with dreaded enemies of the Crow and the Blackfeet—but that’s to be expected of characters who, like the man of La Mancha, dream of “enchantments, quarrels, battles, challenges, wounds, wooings, loves, tempests, and other impossible follies.”

I bought the paperback version and it's very sturdy and well made. The illustrations are so brilliantly done and the story is such a charming tale of being a big sister. I especially love the heartfelt dedication in the front of the book-to her beloved Mother! I had tears in my eyes as I read this book. If Only: The Shame of Abuse, by D P Henry

About the Author This is my story. True with no embellishments. I can't reveal my real name. Why? Because I'm still frightened by my ex-husband. Plus I'm still feeling shame and embarrassment. I could be your neighbor, your friend or the cashier at the store. I hid it well and there are many others still hiding their story. I'm free, but still not free to reveal who I am. It's enough for me to know who I am. I'm a survivor!

As parents, we foist our dreams and aspirations on our children, push them to be more than we could ever be. But do we have the courage and honesty to look within and ask what drives our parenting - our own needs or those of our children? More crucially, are we able to accept them and respect them for who they are? Child & adolescent psychologist and family therapist Shelja Sen formulates five anchors of parenting to help you connect with the immense wisdom that is already present in you: Connect (create the foundation of parenting); Coach (build the necessary skills in children through an understanding of their unique wiring and temperament); Care (nurture ourselves for a more wholesome life); Community (build caring ecosystems for children to thrive in) and Commit (sustain the courage and compassion). Groundbreaking, essential reading.

The Old Wives' Tale, by Arnold Bennett

Review "Bennett's masterpiece . . . There are few more moving accounts of the effects of time, the passage of history and the slow encroachment of age than this remarkable, epic novel." —Guardian"It's not just a wonderful story; it's also an expressionist masterpiece, almost surreal at times. It's also an amazing feat of empathy . . . It's also very intimate, and highly emotional. In fact, it's the perfect novel." —Deborah Moggach, Independent"Arguably the finest novel written by an Englishman in the 20th century." —Daily Telegraph"Arnold Bennett did write one indisputable masterpiece, The Old Wives' Tale, and that is where I recommend you start . . . Each time I'm in the midst of reading it, I think it the best novel ever written." —Wendy Lesser, New York Times"For Bennett . . . compassion is not soggy. It involves understanding. The core of his writing is psychological truth, clinically observed, crisply reported." —Sunday Times

From the Inside Flap With a New Introduction by Francine ProseCommentary by Rebecca West, W. Somerset Maugham,Virginia Woolf, H. G. Wells, Henry James, and J. B. Priestley

" [Arnold Bennett's] superb Old Wives' Tale, wandering from person to person and from scene to scene, is by far the finest 'long novel' that has been written in English and in the English fashion, in this generation."--H. G. Wells

First published in 1908, The Old Wives' Tale affirms the integrity of ordinary lives as it tells the story of the Baines sisters--shy, retiring Constance and defiant, romantic Sophia--over the course of nearly half a century. Bennett traces the sisters' lives from childhood in their father's drapery shop in provincial Bursley, England, during the mid-Victorian era, through their married lives, to the modern industrial age, when they are reunited as old women. The setting moves from the Five Towns of Staffordshire to exotic and cosmopolitan Paris, while the action moves from the subdued domestic routine of the Baines household to the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.

"Like Wordsworth, [Arnold Bennett] has triumphed over the habitual; he has not let it disguise the particle of beauty from him."--Rebecca West

ARNOLD BENNETT (1867-1931) looked to Flaubert, Maupassant, and Balzac for inspiration in the fashioning of his own acutely realistic novels, including his masterpiece, The Old Wives' Tale (1908). His first novel was A Man from the North (1898), and he is also known for his Clayhanger trilogy (1910-16).

The author of thirteen books of fiction, FRANCINE PROSE is a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities and the New York Public Library's Center for Scholars and Writers.

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

58 of 59 people found the following review helpful. The most remarkable book I've read in ages.... By Gwyn Gwyrdd I'm certainly not the only person in the world who thinks of this book as a masterpiece. The fact that H.G. Wells, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf all praise this book as being so is one of the reasons I picked it up. In spite of that, I really read it without set expectations.Briefly, to say what has already been said before, The Old Wives Tale is exactly that - a tale of three women who marry in very different circumstances. Mrs. Baines, the mother, is a life who is only briefly touched upon. However, the seperate lives of the two sisters, Sophia and Constance, are the crux of the book. Each life takes its' turn. We are first told about Constance, then about Sophia, and finally, about their reunion. Constance, whose name is not a coincidence, lives a simple provincial life, and Sophia, whose name also matches her persona, chooses romance and adventure. There is only one villain, and yet, he is perhaps the most powerful and chilling of all villains, Time. His grasping, clutching, suffocating presence is ever felt throughout the book, and looms even larger once that final page is turned. In the end, Sophia and Constance each pay the price for their choices, and the true cost of those choices is left for the reader to decide. As unique as we are, we will each believe something different about Sophia and Constance in the end, and that is precisely the point. To sum up the experience of The Old Wives Tale, a tale of three women living their lives, and their lives changing them (or perhaps not changing them, is that it is the most honest approach to human psychology I have ever read. The lives we read about, Mrs. Baines, Sophia, Constance, and even those who surround them, could be anyone's. In fact, most of us can find someone in this book we could point to and say "that's me". No character, no matter how brief their exit or entrance into this story, is insignificant. Each person gives us a fresh perspective on the human response to events and to, of course, other humans. The three main characters are presented with sheer, unsympathetic, yet respectful honesty. We are not introduced to inhuman, perfect, idealistic souls in this book. Nor are we looking through the eyes of the wicked. Instead, we are searching the souls of ordinary people and in the end, are left with a question about our own existence. In fact, it should be a large clue to readers when they see that the title of the fourth section is, What Life Is. It is here that something occurred which I totally unexpected, and it left me quite shaken - in fact, desperate. I found that I had been brought from the comfortable vantage point of observing these fictional lives, which are at times inexplicably amusing and heroic, to a sudden uncomfortable sensation that the characters were real and had turned toward me - the reader - begging the question "What of your life? What have you done with it? What have you accomplished?"That subtle change of vantage point was shocking, and ingenious. Without criticizing his own creation, the author was able to communicate the importance of living our lives to the fullest without telling us how. This fact alone shows great wisdom. Sophia and Constance experience remarkable things, no more remarkable than most people, but remarkable just the same. Each reacts differently because they are different, and each has a different idea about how to find happiness and how to deal with life's disappointments. Both are frequently of the opinion that they could improve someone else's life, yet have not found real satisfaction in their own. Each makes mistakes, and each perform the heroic. The author will on the same page be blunt about their faults and tender with their plight. He tells their story without judgement, and yet in the end, you feel you have read a very wise judgement on the nature of the human race. Here, reader, you will find no prescription for life, but a question that begs a diagnosis. The author makes it starkly clear that the remedy, or whether a remedy is even required, is up to you.The Old Wives Tale is not a dark story. It is not a comedy. It is not high adventure or mystery. In fact, it is many of these things put together to create something REAL. And it has shaken me to the core.

Constance, the good-natured older sister, grew up, married and raised a family all in the bonding accordance of social and familial expectation, while the beautiful Sophia's stubbornly independent streak propelled her to elope from her family, country and tradition into an utterly varied life. Both main characters are brilliantly etched inside and out, divulging both the beauty and frailty of human endeavor.

36 of 40 people found the following review helpful. What life is By R. Nemirow I read a 1911 hardback edition, with an Arnold Bennett's introduction which gave away a lot of the plot. In this review, I'll try not to make the mistake that Arnold Bennett made -- that may be the only mistake in the book. This is one of those rare books which feature people and places you know: the characters act -- not as you expect them to act -- but as real people do. And that's not all: this book -- with one of the dullest titles imaginable -- gives us a microcosm of life in the late nineteenth century but one which is connected to life in the 21st. It's recognizable, and yet it isn't. Threaded in this book are histories of marketing, mercantilism, urban developement, fashion, mass transit. They are presented in such a way that you can see how we ended up where we are.
