There are pages for contact numbers. I would have takes pictures of the contact pages, but I had already filled the pages out. The planner is very colorful, and well organized. I have room to stick a pen in the binder when it is closed. There are all kinds of cute pages. This serves my needs well. I would have liked more stickers especially more school ones, but I am still very happy with this purchase. I see myself buying one for next year.

I run a farm, a nursing program for our local school district, and a family with two teenagers, a threenager, and a detective husband who works all hours of the day and co manages our 1000 acre spread with me. This sucker did a bang up job of containing all my smarticles to assure the continuation of our well oiled machine called life! Get it. You'll be glad you did.

The pictures are cute and while the bright yellow jacket is a bit, well, bright, the pages are thick so you can write on them in sharpie. The tear out lists in back are so convenient and there are pockets inside to stuff things. I can overlook the yellow in order to benefit from all the other things in the planner! Love this!

This book examines changing views of procreation and fetal development throughout the history of the Christian tradition. This is the first comprehensive study of cultural perceptions of pregnancy, an area of scholarship that been understudied in the past. Pregnancy holds a central place in Christian ritual, iconography, and theology, including the dogma of the incarnation and the cult of Virgin Mary. This book provides a broad introduction to the attitudes and ideas within Western Christian communities by focusing on four periods of transition: Antiquity, the Enlightenment, modernity, and the present day. It lays the groundwork for further study of the interactions between biological models, cultural preconceptions, and religious beliefs.

Review

"This book fills a gap in the current cultural historical literature on pregnancy….It paints the big picture from late antiquity to the modern period."

Neil Pembroke, University of Queensland, Australia

"This work is an important contribution to the current debate about human procreation, fertility and female reproductive autonomy. Combining sources from theological anthropology, legal documents and medical practices, from Antiquity to our time, Anne Stensvold demonstrates how doctrinal concepts are influenced by historically varying biological theories. Her work clarifies how religion and culture interact to shape Western ideas about contraception, pregnancy, abortion and childbirth."

Kari Elisabeth Børresen, University of Oslo, Norway

About the Author

Anne Stensvold is Professor of History of Religions at the University of Oslo, Norway. She has written extensively on popular religion and religious change and is the editor of Western Balkans: The Religious Dimension (2009).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Everybody ought to read this book – to get a better understanding of how culture and religion By Anne Skjonsberg Anne Stensvold has written a fascinating (and chocking) report about human reproduction - how pregnancy and foetal development have been considered through the millenniums within the Christian world. Among the questions discussed by the religious leaders and philosophers were: Has the fertilized egg a soul (whatever that is), and if not – when did this soul enter the body, or rather the foetus? And if the foetus has a soul, how could this soul be saved for its heavenly life if it dies within the mother’s womb? (Salvation requires baptism.) When could – and can - an abortion take place without the mother being accused of murder? The legality of contraception. What should be noticed is that the father – or rather the sperm-giver – does not seem to have been in consideration when these questions were – or are – under discussion. Moreover, the mother seems to be treated as one without any rights what so ever. She has mainly been compared to the soil where the seed is placed in order to grow. The full understanding of how an egg is fertilized was not known until the microscopes were advanced enough. That women produced egg was not known until 1827. The fusion of the male and the female nuclei of the cells was first described in 1884. The menstrual cycle and the woman’s fertile period were not understood before 1907.Today, when it is possible to bring a child into the world without it knowing its proper parents, a child’s interest in knowing its heritage – not people’s wish to be substitute parents – ought to be more in centre for the legal regulation of human procreation. Does not a child need the nurturing care of its biological mother? Is the surrogate mother only a production factor?Everybody ought to read this book – to get a better understanding of how culture and religion, not science or experience (such as the midwife’s or the women’s experiences), dominate, and has dominated, this important area of human life. It also shows how women systematically have been ignored as independent human beings.

Carolina Fantoni, a young contessa in nineteenth-century Italy, is going blind. But nobody believes her: neither her parents, nor her fiancé, the town’s most sought-after bachelor. Only her friend Turri, the eccentric local inventor, understands. But as darkness erases her world, Carolina discovers one place she can still see―in her dreams. In them, she can not only see, but fly, exploring new worlds in her own mind.

Losing her sight isolates Carolina. Even writing letters with pen and ink proves almost impossible―until Turri invents a new machine: the world’s first typewriter. His gift ignites a passionate love affair that will mark both of their lives forever.

Based on the true story of the blind woman who inspired the invention of the typewriter, The Blind Contessa’s New Machine is an iridescent jewel of a novel that celebrates the triumph of the imagination and proves that love is the mother of invention.

The Blind Contessa's New Machine: A Novel, by Carey Wallace

From Publishers Weekly This charming and refreshingly modest debut hinges on a romantic triangle consisting of a blind contessa, her aristocratic husband, and an eccentric inventor. As Carolina Fantoni and Pietro prepare for their wedding in early 19th-century Italy, she tells her handsome, well-born fiancé that she is going blind. Like her family, he doesn't take her seriously, and only Turri, Carolina's friend and married neighbor, believes her. While Pietro engages in less than lofty pursuits, Turri and Carolina continue to meet on Carolina's father's property, and Carolina's creeping blindness inspires Turri to invent a machine she can use to write messages. His invention—a typewriter—sparks an affair that could have far-reaching consequences for them both. Wallace has a smooth style and a sure hand in combining near tragedy with whimsy, whether she's detailing Carolina and Pietro's social circle, the state of scientific knowledge, or the progression of Carolina's blindness. Secondary characters, including Carolina's not-so loyal servant girl, Liza, are sketched with hints of a darker, deeper psychology. Despite its relative brevity, this is a work of surprising insight, humor, and heart. (July) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Wallace's debut may be slender, but it is in no way slight. This shimmering historical, grounded faintly in fact, is elevated by deft touches of romantic mysticism. When Carolina, an indulged but independent early nineteenth century Italian contessa, realizes she is going blind, the only one who believes her is Turri, a local handyman and her childhood friend and confidante. After her marriage to a provincial aristocrat, her vision deteriorates rapidly. Desperate to hold onto the beauty of the physical world, she realizes that she can still see in her dreams and creates a vivid alternate reality. Meanwhile, Turri invents a machine that enables her to continue to communicate with him. As the “writing machine” binds them closer together, a bittersweet affair threatens to tear them apart forever. Writing with the assurance and the clarity of a seasoned author, Wallace crafts a seemingly simple, but ultimately iridescent, love story. --Margaret Flanagan

About the Author Carey Wallace grew up in small towns in Michigan. She has worked as a waitress, private biographer, and lady’s maid to an automotive heiress. The founder of The Hillbilly Underground ― a retreat that draws international artists to rural Michigan ― she lives in Brooklyn, New York. This is her first novel.

Quintessential prose floats over the world of the sightless By Holly Weiss Carolina, a newly engaged woman surrounded by the beauty of a 19th century Italian villa, revels in her daydreams until she realizes she is going blind. Her family worries if their villa's shady garden can sustain a grove of lemon trees while Carolina observes rather than fears her encroaching blindness.Ironically, Carey Wallace's evocative prose is awash with images that invite the eye to retrace many a sentence. The author then masterfully invites us into the world of the sightless with descriptions of the other senses spilling over each page. "The woods chatter." "The insect's strong body beat against her eyelids." "Sugar. She lifted her finger from her tongue." Under Wallace's pen, Carolina experiences the world so clearly, we are stunned to discover that she needs a writing machine. I need not comment about the love story in the plot as other reviewers have. Frankly, plot was quite secondary in this reader's mind to the perception of how well Carolina lived in her dark world. When her other senses do not give her enough, she wills her dreams to take her to places where she can envision what she loves. This extraordinary debut novel moved me with its insight and eloquence. I disagree with the review that cited blindness as being the central idea in the book. I found the novel remarkably illuminating and an absolute delight to read.Reviewed by Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont

Timeless emotional resonance, well-drawn characters we can understand and care about, a unique sense of place and time in early 19th century Italy... The Blind Contessa's New Machine is a beautiful story, a psychologically elegant romance, and a deep pleasure.I finished this slim volume (just over 200 pages) in one sitting, reading into the early morning hours. When I closed the book the first words that came to my mind to explain how I feel about it to others were these: "This book makes me believe in the power of art (literature) again."While it took me a few hours to accept the conclusion, I now think the author's resolution of the story was true-to-life, more honest than the desires of readers like me.An entrancing and heart-wise first novel.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Dancers in the dark By Kieri A lovely first novel - bittersweet historical romance tempered with a hefty dose of magic realism. Hard to believe it is a first novel, as Carey Wallace weaves gorgeous mental tapestries with every word (the story clocks in at about 200 pages, and Wallace really does make every word work for its space). As Carolina's blindness progresses, the details become sharper - every last sight is documented, then every smell, every sound, every touch...I would almost rather recommend this book to fantasy fans then historical romance fans. There's something very Patricia McKillip about this novel.

You can tell the author enjoys and is an expert in the period of the the English Civil War and Britain in the later part of the 17th century. The only criticism I have, especially in the first two books, was his detail descriptions of the different types of cryptography which may be interesting to someone who wants to know the details of 17th century cryptography, but was a distraction to me since I really didn't need to know the subject at a tutor/student level.Otherwise, this whole trilogy is superb when it comes to an entertaining unique story line filled with information about the politics, way of life, and customs during this period. The plot and protagonist are refreshingly unique. This is a very good read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

This Could Be the Most Important Book You Ever Buy By Don Sloan In How to Get A Boyfriend, author Misty Astridge takes a close look at exactly how to take a more realistic approach to choosing a boyfriend. This is not a difficult process, she asserts -- just a systematic one.She enumerates twenty rock-solid tips on how to find the right guy, and keep him, all in a peppy, easy-to-read format.Misty challenges the reader to ask herself what her "ideal" boyfriend would look -- and act -- like. Then she examines why the type you might normally be interested in might not be such a good fit for you long-term.In the chapter on finding people, she offers valuable insights into where Mr. Right may be hanging out right now -- and how you can be there to meet him. She even examines the pro's and con's of online dating -- a practice that might work well for you, despite its unconventionality. And if you become tongue-tied in a situation whenyou're meeting someone new, there's even an entire chapter devoted just to that. One of the book's strong points lies in the tips on going from the "first date" stage of the relationship to something deeper. The author has clearly "been-there-done-that" when it comes to this sometimes awkward stage of getting to know each other. Her experience can help you make the transition yourself -- just by following a few helpful tips.If you've been less than successful in the past in getting the right guy interested in you, or taking a relationship to the next level after a certain period of time, this book can help. Thanks to Misty for writing such an insightful small book!

By John Houchins How to Get a Boyfriend by Mistry J Astrige is really the perfect book to have on your Kindle if you ever feel lost in the dating game. This book does not focus little tips and tricks but rather cover the general things you need to know in order to positively change your mindset, habits and anything keeping you away from having the boyfriend of your dream.I showed this book to one of my friend and she really liked the part of the book that helps you thinking about "What your ideal boyfriend is really" and the one talking about the different ways to meet boys either online or by going out with friends.I definitely recommend anyone to buy this book, to get a general idea on how to be back on track !

By Gary Brandon I found this book very interesting. Coming from a guy's perspective I found this book to be spot on. I've read books on how to get a girlfriend which certainly challenged my thinking and allowed me to drastically improve my approach towards women. I am straight and not looking for a boyfriend, however I was curious to understand whether women were actually getting helpful information on their quest to find a boyfriend and I can honestly say that this book will help a lot of women not only find a boyfriend, but most importantly find the right boyfriend and keep him.I definitely recommend this book!

For more than a decade, Matthew Kelly has been traveling the world inspiring people to become the-best-version-of-themselves. During this time he has been amazed at how regularly he is asked: How do I encourage my children to embrace this message? How does your message apply to a family? Now, for the first time, Kelly shares with us remarkable insights and sensible everyday strategies for transforming the family into what it should be: a place where each of us can become the-best-version-of-ourselves. Beginning with an exploration of the changing face of the family in our culture, Kelly sets every reader at ease by explaining: “A family is not what we think a family should be, or what we hope to have, or should have, or what would be ideal—a family is what we actually have. A family is the one we’ve got.” Nor can a family ever be perfect, he goes on to explain. “Perfect families exist only in our minds, and it is these imaginings that are very often the enemy of our ability to enjoy the wonderful family we already have, or might have if we made it just that little bit more of a priority.” In Building Better Families, Kelly explores important issues by raising evocative questions: What makes a successful parent? Do you realize that your children are in the middle of a cultural war? What are the five things children really need? Are you asking your children the right questions? What are you teaching your children about work, money, food, exercise, body image, and sex? What are the priorities of your family culture? Every page of this book is filled with examples that can be applied to your daily experience of parenting and family, while at the same time illuminating the broader and deeper significance of family for society and the future of humanity. “The family is at once a deeply personal experience and the cornerstone of all great societies,” Mathew Kelly tells us. Allow this book of classic wisdom and practical insight to help you build a better family.

Those changes are no more apparent than in the area of family. More than 50 percent of America’s children now live separated from their biological fathers. Like many, I think this is tragic, but I do not want to write a book about that tragedy. There has been enough written already. We can sit around cursing the darkness or we can turn on the light and find the best path forward. What Is a Family? It’s an interesting question. If you want to have some heated conversation, get a diverse group of people together for a dinner party and raise this question. This topic is nothing short of explosive at this time, both socially and politically. There are many who would say the answer is very simple. A family is a mother and a father and their children. This answer is usually announced with a tone of absolute certainty, sometimes even arrogance, as if it were as obvious as the day is long and as old as time itself. Though if we travel across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe or south of the border to Central and South America, we quickly discover that a multigenerational definition of family that includes not only parents and children but grandparents and great grandparents is very much alive and well in many cultures. These cultures are also very much in celebration of the intergenerational definition of family that includes aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews. The same person who answered with all that certainty—“A family is a mother and a father and their children.”—would reply to these points by saying, “Well, of course we consider grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews to be part of a family in a broader sense.” You see, in America today, the question—What is a family?—has become a secret code for the political question: Who should raise children?I have had the pleasure of watching my good friend Pat Lencioni, the famed business author and consultant, work with executive teams on a couple of occasions. One of the exercises he does with these executives concerns the idea of core values. Most business leaders would now agree that a company should have a set of core values. If you were to visit the head office of most companies, you’d discover that these core values appear in various places—from annual reports to plaques in lobbies to mini-posters in hallways, cubicles, and lunchrooms. But if you ask most employees what do these core values mean, they will tell you that they mean nothing. This is because of how they were arrived at. A group of executives got together one day and decided they needed some core values for the company because they saw that some other company had them, and besides, it is now accepted wisdom that all companies should have stated core values. They pick values like integrity, compassion, and service. But the employees know from their everyday experience that these core values do not exist, and so rather than creating unity, they create disengagement and resentment. The problem is that when the executive team sits down to arrive at their core values, they don’t ask: What are our core values? Rather, they ask: What should our core values be? So, what they come up with are in fact aspirational values (what they want the values of the company to be) not actual core values (what the values of the company actually are at this very moment).Similarly, when the question is raised—What is a family?— most people reply by describing what they think the ideal family should be and not by describing their actual family, or the reality of most families.Returning then to the dinner party reply—“A family is a mother and a father and their children.”—let’s have a look at how many people this definition excludes. Certainly a gay couple raising a child is excluded, and this, of course, is exactly who this answer is designed to exclude more often than not. But if we move for a moment beyond this highly emotionally charged social and political issue, who else gets excluded by this definition of family? Single mothers and their children, couples who are unable to have children, adopted children, foster families, grandparents raising children and the children being raised by grandparents, husbands and wives in second marriages and the children they are raising from either marriage, and so on.If the question were: What is the best situation in which a child should be raised? I would tell you that in my own opinion the best scenario would be for a child to be raised by a loving biological mother and father who are deeply in love with each other, permanently committed to their own and to each other’s growth, and to supporting their child to become all he or she was created to be and achieve all he or she was created to accomplish. I would probably also add broad and deep intergenerational and multigenerational aspects to their family life along with the best education, opportunities to travel, and on and on and on.That would be perfect, but in reality the life of human beings cannot be neatly packaged. Life tends to be messy most of the time. Very few children have these circumstances in all their breadth and depth, perhaps none. Though it does help to know what perfect would look like. But the question is: What is a family? A family is not what we think a family should be, or what we hope to have, or should have, or what would be ideal—a family is what we actually have. A family is the one we’ve got. None of them perfect and all of them messy from time to time. Some of them messier than others. But there is no point telling someone that what they have is not a family. So, while it is critically important that we continue to recognize and celebrate the ideal for a family and the ideal for raising children, it is more important that we realize where we are and what we have to work with—and begin that work today. In the pages that follow, you will find tools and insights to help you in the work of building a better family. The title is not Building Perfect Families. Perfect families exist only in our minds, and it is these imaginings that are very often the enemy of our ability to enjoy the wonderful family we already have, or might have if we made it just that little bit more of a priority.Family and Today’s Culture—Opposing PurposesThe only place to begin our discussion of building better families is with an examination of purpose. What is the purpose of a family? The answer to this question can only be drawn from a vision of a human person. People do not exist for families; families exist for people. What, essentially, is a person’s purpose? If you have read any of my earlier works you know that I have repeatedly proposed that our essential purpose is to become the-best-version-of-ourselves. You are here to become all you were created to be. You are not here exclusively to do something or accomplish certain tasks, but to be and become someone. All the doing that fills our lives—relationships, school, work, politics, community involvement, recreation—is designed simply to provide opportunities for us to become the-best-version-of-ourselves. Could you have any better dream for your children, your spouse, or your parents than for them to truly become and fully celebrate the-best-version-of-themselves? It is the ultimate dream for those we love. Our vision for family springs from this vision for a person. So we ask the question again: What is the purpose of a family? The purpose of a family is to help one another become the-best-version-of-ourselves and in the process contribute to the greater good of society and humanity. The family is the building block of all great societies. Sadly, we don’t hear much about the building of great societies anymore, and that may be because we mistakenly believe we already have them. So, though it should be unnecessary to ask the question, for the sake of clarity: Why is it important to build and sustain great societies? Because great societies give rise to great men and women who celebrate their best selves and in turn raise humanity to new levels. A family (or a culture or a society, for that matter) is not an end in itself, but exists at the service of a greater purpose. Families, cultures, and societies are true to themselves when they help their members become better-versions-of-themselves.On paper this may all make sense, but you and I know how difficult it is to celebrate and defend our best self in the moments of everyday living, even before we take into account the influence of our environments.People and families live in the midst of societies and cultures. In a utopian world, everything about a culture would be aimed toward helping each member of society become the-best-version-of-himself or -herself. In our very human world, however, we know this is not so. It is therefore important to examine the motives of the culture in which we live. What is the purpose of culture? In general, the role of culture is to offer a broadening experience for the people of a society. But even this broadening should serve some greater overall purpose. Broadening simply for the sake of broadening is dangerous, irresponsible, and reckless. In its truest expression, culture would expose people to a broadening set of ideas and experiences that would be aimed at inspiring and assisting each member of that society to become a-better- version-of-themselves. Every aspect of the human experience should be seen with our essential purpose in mind. Culture is therefore only valuable to the extent that it helps the members of a society celebrate their best selves. It is needless to say, and blatantly obvious, that our modern culture fails to deliver in this regard in too many ways to list. At every turn we are assaulted by i...

Not easy, but simple. He engages the reader in a series of conversations that run parallel to developing as an adult-and what we want for our children (or grandchildren).Oftentimes his advice is a blinding flash of the obvious-but more often than not is something we know at some level-but are not acting on. For example he explores the four needs that every child has-and clearly differentiates between what we all can clearly recognize as a need-and something that is simply a want. I'd be more specific, but frankly, I want you to be curious and buy this book-it's that good.He also clearly spells out the four things a child really needs from a parent, and then peppers the chapter with specific how-to's. One of the most poignant stories in the book is that of a five-year-old child asking his father how much he earned. The father got upset with this line of questioning, but eventually told his son "twenty dollars." Armed with that information his son asked if he could have ten dollars. This infuriated the father who proceeded to educate (or rather berate) his son in a very loud voice. He then sent him to bed. After a bit the father realized how harsh he had been and went to the son's room, apologized and asked forgiveness. He then gave his son the ten dollars that he had requested. With that the small boy pulled some crumpled bills out from under his pillow. This immediately caused the father to be upset again-until the boy said, "I was ten dollars short, but now I have enough. Can I buy an hour of your time?"What a humbling experience. And this is the type of compelling story Kelly tells over and over again to make his key points come to life. This book is for anyone who truly wants to be a better parent or grandparent, and who is looking for answers to questions like: * When should a child really have a cell phone? * What types of video games are appropriate? * How can I help my child deal with peer pressure? * How can I have conversations that will help my child develop the values that will help them truly be their highest and best selves? * How can I become the role model that I want to be as a parent (or a grandparent)? Not only will the answers make sense. You will find practical strategies that can be readily implemented.Armchair Interviews says: Run, don't walk to your bookstore and get this book.

I would recommend Building Better Families to all members of the human family not just to the people who are raising children at the moment. He emphasizes filtering all your choices for yourself (or for those you are entrusted with caring for) through the question of "Will this help me to become the best version of myself?" That question brings clarity and reason back to the big decisions and the smaller choices in life.
