3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Spectacular book! By Douglas A Beyer Jr This is a spectacular book! Mrs.Schmeidler takes her time early on to thoroughly develop the characters. It's well worth it as you really get to know the characters as well as you know your own friends. Early on, there are couple of things that are rather predictable; something that is unusual for this author. Don't let that fool you because she quickly returns to form by leading you to think one thing and then hits you from left field taking the story in an entirely different direction. This is very characteristic of Mrs. Schmeidler's writing. By the time you get to the end, she's even tied up some loose ends you didn't even know were loose! Though this is a work of fiction, she adds just enough factual information making the story very real. This is a great story that also includes as important message. I highly recommend this book and eagerly look forward to her next offering.

The author Elizabeth Schmeidler creates the characters in such detail that it makes you feel like they are your friends. I could not put the book down and if I did I could not wait to get back to it. I wish I had a dozen more of her books to read.

She is so gifted in so many ways and many of them come through her writing. This is a book that I intend to read every year for the inspirations contained on every page. As she develops the rich characters in ways that allow you to know them as friends and family, she imparts qualities that inspire us to be what God has designed us to be. We all go through hard times just like these characters do and if those trials produce in us more trust, love, and forgiveness we come out better people for them. It is our choice how we face these trials but IF we remember that God is with us and will never leave us or forsake us, it will give us the courage and strength to see it through just like the characters in this wonderful book come to do in their lives. Thank you Elizabeth for the inspiration, timely reminders, and determination to show us that God is good all the time. Read this book, savor the messages and be inspired to live your life honoring our great creator God in what ever field He has chosen for you. Thank you Elizabeth for yet another amazing book and thank you Lord for Elizabeth!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Too slow, too much saved for the last 20% By Kenneth C. Mahieu Mark Ellis' "Stalin's Gold" is so-so. Pluses and minuses. The story is about a huge shipment of gold sent to the Russians during the Spanish Civil War in exchange for arms. A portion, about $6 million, is diverted by Polish officers to support the resistance effort. Eventually the gold winds up in London during the Blitz and everyone - Brits, Poles, Russians - is searching for it. My biggest complaint about this novel is that it is not well paced, so much of the action, and way too much of the explanation of what has been going on is saved for the final pages. Protagonist DCI Frank Merlin is too cardboard, as are most of the huge cast of characters (keep a scorecard. I did think that the vivid descriptions of the nightly bombings and aftermath were very well done. But it didn't save the book for me. Though I've now read the first two books in the series, I won't be continuing on.

As with the first Merlin novel, Prince’s Gate, the book is set in London in the early days of WWII. However, whereas Prince’s Gate is set during the so-called “Phony War”, the action in Stalin’s Gold is shadowed by the horrendous but heroic days of the Blitz and Battle of Britain. Both books are in the tradition of fine British mysteries a la Agatha Christie, and are intricately and ingeniously plotted. But Stalin’s Gold, benefiting from the dramatic events surrounding it, has a greater feeling of historical sweep. Moreover, the action moves from the Kremlin, to London, to Civil War Spain, to Poland, to Berlin, so the reader gets the pleasure of experiencing several exotic locales.Mark Ellis has a great sense of character. Frank Merlin is a charismatic and complex hero. The other characters, the good, the bad and the ugly are as alive to the reader as if they were in your living room. But Ellis’ greatest gift is as a painter of setting. In so many small details, the slogans on a can, the taste (or not) of the cuisine, the lilt of the speech, the sounds and smells, the reader is really there. Ellis has an encyclopedic knowledge of the details of London and British life in those days.This is an intelligent novel and an excellent read. Good show!

Perfect for fans of British mystery novels By Barb Lawrence I won this book as a Goodreads First Reads giveaway and am glad I had the opportunity to read it. As a fan of British mystery writers, I found this to be a very entertaining historical fiction set in London during WWII.Our hero, DCI Frank Merlin, is as likable a character as I would ever hope to encounter: intelligent, brave, honest, and fiercely protective of those he cares about, this is a man I'd want to have my back in a sticky situation. While investigating the disappearance of Polish airman connected to his new lady love, Merlin finds himself enmeshed in a web of greed and murder involving Spanish gold stolen by Stalin during the civil war and in turn pilfered by a Polish aristocrat. The twists and turns the case takes kept me fascinated as I tried to piece together the clues as they came to light.The novel was well crafted, reminiscent of stories by P. D. James and Martha Grimes. A fast read, I finished it easily in two days and was left quite satisfied with the resolution.I will definitely be searching out other works by Mark Ellis, particularly anything featuring the intrepid Mr. Merlin.

But before you become a mother, you need to go through the 40 weeks pregnancy period but there are cases that it will be less than 40 weeks. This book has plenty of useful information on what you should expect on the a specific week of pregnancy. It is well written and reader friendly.

That might be true in a sense, that you cannot really explain to someone what they will be experiencing as each and every one is different. I think it is still important to read and get informed as much as possible. I found the book very helpful and informative, in a natural plain manner. All is explained on what to expect each week of your pregnancy. Even if you are a mom already, I would recommend the book as a helpful guide to some questions you might have.

Classic Christian fiction By morehumanthanhuman Originally published in 1917, this book -- while obviously a product of the era in which it was written -- rivals the best Christian fiction being published today. Like in all Christian fiction, you've got some idea of what is going to happen (a main character who thinks about becoming a Christian isn't going to suddenly change his mind in these books, for example), but Hill's story-telling is unexpectedly fresh and vibrant. Her evil people are evil. Her good people are squeaky clean. Her struggling believers really struggle. It's easy to see why these books have passed the test of time and are still known and read today after much of what was published alongside them is forgotten.Paul Courtland is a young college man who has discarded the vague Christianity of his youth for the "realities, laws, and science" popular among his college friends and professors. When a Christian classmate, Stephen, dies bravely in the aftermath of a college prank (which, yes, briefly blinds Paul), he feels a "presence" and resolves to better know "Stephen's Christ." Note: if you're a Stephen in a Christian novel and there is an unbeliever named Paul around, you're gonna die. But on the bright side, you're going to inspire him ... so it all balances out The main obstacle to Paul's quest for spiritual improvement is Gila Dare, a young woman who is about as evil as evil can be ("Had she not tossed so many a hapless soul that had come like a moth to singe his wings in her candle-flame, then laughed at him gaily as he lay writhing in his pain; and toss after him, torn and trampled, his own ideals of womanhood, too; so that all other women might henceforth be blighted in his eyes."). But as a completely enjoyable example of early 20th-century Christian fiction, you can't do better and I dare you to try.One element of this novel that I did find unexpected was the author's strong call for social justice, not something that is a frequent player in Christian fiction nowadays. Paul sees his duty not just to preach to the poor, but to seek positive changes in their material lives as well -- things like eight-hour days, workplace safety, etc. Christians are presented as lobbying for changes to the economic order and are tied to the Progressive movement. For example, after an unsafe factory burns to the ground, Hill tells us: "The model factory was gone! But the money that had built it, the money that it had made, was still in existence to build it over again, a perpetual blind to the lawmakers who might have otherwise put a stop to its abuses! It would undoubtedly be built again, more whited, more sepulchral than before." How unexpected would this be in today's Christian fiction?Overall, this was a very enjoyable read.

Brandenburg For a fast read, of good Christian fiction, you can't beat Grace Livingston Hill, and on Kindle $1.99 great price.As a follower of Christ it is so great to have fiction to read that inspires you. Romance is hard to come by sometimes, and she always delivers, OK so it's 1920, girls are girls, boys are boys, and love is love.It's just simple, clean and good, and in these hard times we are experiencing, it's a nice reminder that we are not the first generation to experience hard times. Enjoy, and be inspired.

This book showed the conviction of one young man and his walk with The Christ. It is more than a love story, it shows how one is supposed to walk with the Lord.

About the Author Brian Mulipah’s life changed dramatically on Saturday, January 12, 2002, at 5pm. The low life alcoholic began his recovery from alcohol addiction. Though he had already tried giving up booze thousands of times, this time it was for good. “I couldn’t even finish the beer I had in my hand. I had to pour out all half of the bottle on the street pavement”. He dodged the first meeting with a new ecstasy-peddling business partner, and headed for rehab instead. Three months later, Brian found himself with this urge to help people who are hurting, disappointed and abused to find the results they need, so that they can live joyful and productive lives. Today, he is a missionary working with a missionary organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM). When he is not writing, and while serving on the mission field, he enjoys mountain climbing, travelling, and hanging out at coffee-shops. You will usually find him wearing blue jeans and a red baseball cap.

This book is a great guide into dissecting what can go wrong in relationships and how to fix these problems. Additionally it gives advice on how to strengthen relationships and how to avoid the pitfalls that plague many toxic relationships. Finally, it teaches you how to see your relationship as more of a special friendship so you and your significant other can not only be romantic together but also share everyday moments and interests with each other. Overall I highly recommend this as a guide to anyone with relationship problems or looking to fixing their relationship

By Meg The Little Miss Sunshine books were pretty popular when I was a kid, so I'm not surprised someone was clever (or desperate to sell books) enough to parody them, but let me just say that I think Dan Zevin got it right, which made me glad I requested a free copy for review from Blogging For Books.I attended a small private college in the Midwest where I (thankfully) did not fit in with most of the other coeds on campus. Add a cross necklace and replace the Coach purse with a Vera Bradley bag (more regional, and more affordable because, after all, they ARE college girls), and you've now cartoonized the flocks of consumerist lemmings I was surrounded by for every meal in the dining commons, every mandatory dorm meeting (No boys allowed on our floor!), and each Student Activities Council event. Reading this book and laughing aloud the whole time allowed me to vent any residual frustration I may have bottled up in the bottom of my Pumpkin Spice Latte-hating, would never wear UGGs in public, refuse to use any purse fully emblazoned with the brand's logo soul. What can I say? I'm more of a tea drinking, Mary Jane wearing, Cambridge Satchel Company carrying b*tch, myself.This book gently pokes at an issue I hope will strike a chord with any of its readers who may find themselves within these pages: that we've gone from wanting to be a unique, special snowflake/butterfly to wanting to fit in and be just like everybody else... by buying what everyone else buys. If one of the main resources at your disposal is your discretionary dollar, what does it say about you if you're lining up to purchase exactly the same kind of comestibles, fashions, and entertainment all of last season's trendsetters have encouraged you to buy by promoting themselves on Twitter and Instagram? Maybe it's that you have no idea who YOU are, and you might consider putting a hold on the Benjamins flying forth from your Coach-stamped wallet until you figure it out. Because, otherwise, you're just paying to be a poor imitation of the popular girl from your sorority, your favorite third-rate celebrity, or the lady down the block with the biggest engagement diamond.After all, we vote with our dollars, don't we? And I, for one, vote for this book.

You know her, she's always drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes in her uggs, betches! If you're a little miss basic, or if you just like to make fun of them, I recommend reading this just for fun! :)

This small paper back book abt. 5X5 in size and a whole lot of bubble wrap, yes I did laugh! Anyway the book cover so adorable basic black with big white lettering all capitals, “LITTLE MISS BASIC.” First impression, looks like a black and yellow bee female wearing a huge black sunglasses holding her cell phone and hand bag and in the other hand a Starbuck drink. Everything you will need to get your day started don’t you think? Now her love life wheels it’s ugly head, a friend lends an ear now Miss Basic wants to show her gratitude. Recognized this “:),” she declared, geez I am lost. Now instagram status, post a photo, #hash tag, 770 likes, lolwut so ratchet, omgeewhiz literally dyyyying. Now I’m really lost . . . just playing. So humorous and cute and funny an everyday conversation with your phone. Juice cleanse? She meets someone doing Savasana pose, his yoga mat is ratchet! He is vegan, possibly paleo. Got to read this very short bent over funny, funky humorous tale. The author managed to write his way to a typical problem a girl faces and the way she deals with it plus all the comforts or you can call it convenience. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
