0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Better Than Most, Still Saddled w/Unbiblical Bigotry By Vocab Malone I have been reading many books by BHI authors. This is hands down the best book of that type I have read yet. The author is a bit more careful and argues more cogently than most BHI works.For example, he stays away from some of the outlandish claims from some in the Sacred Name Movement. This is not to say this is an academically rigorous book proper, but it does have some depth.I was surprised to find that some of it is even quite orthodox. Sans the overemphasis on skin tone, the author's Christology is nigh orthodox at many points (eg, on redemption and atonement). Even though there are ambiguities in how the author discusses the incarnation, it would seem the author has a generally acceptable view of the Trinity. Much of the typology in regards to the feasts and OT themes is basically sound as well.The weaknesses come from forcing what the author perceives as blackness onto the ancient Hebrews (and of course Jesus). The author assumes - but never demonstrates - the basic BHI tenet that black Americans are descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Lastly, the author is saddled with an un-Christian bigotry towards those he sees as outside this true Nation of Israel.I am a Christian who adheres to Reformed Theology. Needless to say, I do not adhere to much of what is called "Black Hebrew Israelite" doctrine (this book is a BHI work). As the pals try to aid Artemis in her disagreement with her brother (against their wills), they also struggle with first crushes, friendship troubles, and self-doubt. The creators balance the supernatural high jinks and summer camp standbys (anxious counselors and Capture the Flag) along with poignant coming-of-age moments with a deft and thoughtful hand. The variety of the panels reinforces the energetic pace of each tale, and the psychedelic color palette against forest greens in outdoor daylight scenes and grays and dark blues of nighttime scenes will delight reluctant readers and make graphic novel fans out of neophytes. She likes the art style, the characters, and the story. She is always pulling me aside to show me a panel or page. I will continue getting these for her as long as the quality holds.

By TrekkieChick29 Five girls, enjoying summer camp, continue in their outrageous and stereotype-busting adventure. I cannot say enough positive things about this graphic novel series. The artwork is fantastic and works well with the playful nature of the story. Every type of girl is represented and no one being better than the other, as summer camp should be. While it starts out as any girl-scouts-esque story might, these girls are more concerned with saving the world and taking friendship to the max than they are with perfecting their arts and crafts. A final note is the beginning of each chapter being the badge theme, which is full of lessons that every young girl should learn.I would fully recommend this series to anyone and everyone - no comic collect is complete without it!

By Stekala I bought Volume 2 for my sister after she bought me Volume 1 (and read it before she gave it to me, which got her hooked!). I'd already read these issues online, but it's even more beautiful in print! The colors are so rich and vibrant, and it really brings the story to life. As for the stories, it's a perfect blend of magic and mayhem, action and adventure, humor as well as nods to serious topics, all with the awesome hardcore lady types we know and love--so, typical Lumberjanes! I'm really so grateful to have found this series. Even as a 20-something year old, I found it incredibly inspiring--even healing--to read a story where girls were not only placed front and center, but were allowed to be real, natural, dirty (hey, they're at camp!), and diverse--not to mention going on epic magical adventures! Honestly, even as a lifelong feminist who really pays attention to media's portrayal of girls and women, it sometimes takes series like Lumerjanes for it to really hit me how rarely media focuses on girls, their friendships or relationships, or their diversity, and when it does focus on girls, demands them to always look pretty and perfect (according to *their* standards of beauty, of course). More than that, it made me realize how much consuming that type of media affects my own self image and self esteem. Even when you think you're enjoying all the "Strong Female Characters" on TV or movies, the fact that the vast majority are still skinny, white, conventionally attractive, cishet women with perfect hair and makeup all the time, well...it takes a toll. Lumberjanes made me feel more comfortable in my own skin than I had in a long time, and for that reason alone, I hope this series reaches as many girls (and boys!) as possible. Keep it up, Lumberjanes!

Gut-wrenching By Kerry Whalen “Twin Marines in Hell: From Grade School to Vietnam,” is a gut-wrenching first-person account of brothers John and Jerry, transforming from seventeen-year-old “boys” on the seaside farmlands of Howard Beach, New York, to “maggots” physically and mentally abused by the Marine drill instructors of Paris Island, and finally onto “Leathernecks” who served proudly for our country as United States Marines in South Vietnam.“Twin Marines,” is a great read for anyone interested in the trials and tribulations of true American heroes who valiantly and voluntarily served this great country back in the ‘60’s.I was only disappointed when I ran out of pages to read. Well done Jerry.Semper Fi.

By Joseph This was a great book about two twin brothers that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about a Marine's first hand account in boot camp and tour in Vietnam. The author took a gentle approach to an awful war without getting into the more serious side of a solider on the battlefield and his account of boot camp is sure to make you laugh out loud. Great book - Thank you!

Proud to be an American By GrandmaluvsAmazon Having grown up in the same town as the author, I was anxious to "trip down memory lane" and recall all the places we all would haunt on a daily basis. This book more than satisfied my nostalgic passion. Beyond that, the voyage into the Marine Corps. and the Viet Nam experience has me totally enthralled. I was a little concerned that it would turn into another "guy book" but I've been pleasantly surprised. Any lady who came through the 60's and Viet Nam, will be totally enthralled. Well done Mr. Byrne and a much belated "Thank you for your service". May your brother rest in peace.

Uneven By transplant28 I bought the book because I liked Jeremy Mangerchine's book, "The Longest Bridge Across Water," to which the author refers several times since he's his best friend. I was disappointed that the first third or so seemed boring, saying nothing I hadn't heard a hundred times. Then it got interesting, to the point that I thought what he said was quite weird, if not bordering on heresy, like when he said of himself, "I am Christ." Though I have an open mind and try to understand, I have very mixed feelings about some statements in the book.

A captivating portrait of a bygone era By PAL An amazing, touching, true story of Deborah - a young, vibrant, zany Canadian girl who married Richard, a distant cousin whom she had set her heart on as a teenager. Deborah was just out of her teens while, Richard, her husband-to-be was a 31-year-old Anglo-Irish sophisticated, established solicitor who, through two separate incidents, was a double-amputee. The poignant, at times heart-rending story is told through family letters and correspondence and is observed with wit and, at times, harrowing clarity from the writer's 21st Century perspective. The fairy-tale beginning, initiated in the late 1950s, spans the 'Swinging Sixties' to conclude just before the 1970s. The story captures beautifully the halcyon days of innocence before the story moves relentlessly into portraying the reality of a marriage, built on dreams, crumbling into disillusionment and heartache. And yet, throughout this story of a young girl's passage from youth to womanhood, what shines through is the heroine's ' joie de vivre', her strength and fortitude and the deep, unwavering, unconditional love that unites a family. This is the type of book that lends itself to being turned into a TV series. It is captivating!

By Joyanne It surprised me how compelling this was to read, particularly as it was largely a compilation of the letters that were exchanged among the Troop family members. It was as if the family from You Can't Take it With You (my favorite movie) was living at Downton Abbey on the Yew Tree Farm! Mummy was a real Spring Byington and Daddy was so much fun, yet so wise. I can't imagine how Beege managed to endure all that she did without becoming embittered. Her Canadian upbringing could not have prepared her for her life as Mrs. Richard Donovan. A really good read.
