I lead a DivorceCare group and I'm going to recommend this to every guy that takes the class, as well as to every lady that takes the class so they have the option of recommending it to their ex-husbands. Divorce is so "normal" now and the struggles families endure are hard, it affects everyone. But especially kids. It used to be all about dead beat dads, but has quickly become the same for some moms also. The book covers every aspect of the new life you face and begin with your children. It is a fresh start for all of you and this guide puts you on the right path and opens the doors to the places, people and thing you need to do to make the journey a happy one. It is well written and made sense, and the references were a great touch. The author shared his own pain and did a wonderful job in putting it together. I highly recommend it to all single parents. Remember you are not alone.

By Jane Raeburn Author Weinstein uses personal interviews to sample the wide variety of sexual experience among people of size. While no book of this type can claim to be comprehensive, Fat Sex gives us a strong sense that being fat does not sentence anyone to a life of celibacy, and that indeed fat people can have (and be) a whole lot of fun in bed. A useful contribution to the emerging dialogue on the role of fat in society, Fat Sex is funny and wry rather than titillating or lewd.

Definitely a wide variety of stories, including a few that had me nodding my head at the similarity to my own life. Here and there, facts are thrown in, but never do they stop the flow. Fat Sex and Much More By Erec Smith Fat Sex is an honest narrative portrayal of several normal, sexual people deemed unacceptably "overweight" by societal standards. Don't let the title fool you; this book is NOT a Kama Sutra for fat people, but a confessional about the pain and insecurity of wanting a healthy love life while being considered "unworthy" of such a thing. Ultimately, this book is about fat people's quests for love and acceptance. Fat Sex is not only about the experiences--both good and not-so good--of fat people as sexual beings; it also tells the story of those who desire fat people: Fat Admirers and "Chubby Chasers." Admirers are typically left out of fat acceptance literature, but Weinstein gives them a space and a voice in her book. Thus, Fat Sex drives home the fact that many people are attracted to fat men and women, but societal standards keep them from embracing their attraction. This book is inspirational to both fat people and "closeted" fat admirers looking for a sense of camaraderie.Lastly, this book is a general portrayal of the struggles fat people go through, in general. We all know that self-esteem plays a large role in one's sex life. People approach or don't approach sex, have or don't have sex, based on self-worth and the particularities of their attractions. This book chronicles several people's experiences with overcoming societal obstacles to have a healthy and fulfilled love life. It addresses the misconceptions about fat people and dismisses stereotypes of laziness and unhealthy lifestyles. It exposes much rhetoric about "the obesity epidemic" as mere hatred and bigotry. This book is very dynamic. Although sex is its focal point, it addresses the fat experience, in general.This is a good read for people of all sizes; it provides a perspective of which most are either unaware of misinformed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Some Pros, Some Cons By Tara Chevrestt This is a light mystery set in 1911 London. Actually, the word "light" is probably wrong. After all, a woman is shot to death in Hyde Park. That's serious stuff. But the telling of it all, the lack of emotions from the characters gave it a light feel.Except for a nervous Bridget (the niece) and a flighty sister, the women in the story were like robots: the assistant, the daughter. The men seemed to be fleshed out a little more, namely the beau and the nephew. (The husband didn't seem as affected as I would expect.) I guess that would be my main quibble with the book and I'll just get that out of the way. The characterizations were presented to us in such a way that while we're given lots of details (some of them impertinent to the story) about each character, we never come to care for them at all. At least I didn't.The story itself, the plot, is really somewhat exciting. A wealthy married woman who writes racy romances in her free time and has a male companion (not her husband) taking her to shows and riding with her in the park is just shot dead one day. There's missing property, Russian connections, and strange secrets about her popping up here and there during the investigation.At the heart of it all is the possible beau who really wants the woman's daughter, the robotic daughter, a bluestocking niece, a flighty sister, a husband with a missing gun, and a mysterious assistant as well as a nephew who runs a controversial newspaper. The story throws just enough details at you to throw you off and keep you guessing. What does one have to do with the other? Is this even relevant, you wonder as you read and pick up clues.But it's rather slow and on top of my above quibble, I also grew irritated at the "jumping" around. Example: The scene is on Marcus. He is about to go visit the newspaper. Scene ends. Then it goes to the daughter and Marcus shows up to visit her. I thought he was going to the paper? Then he sits down to tell her about his trip to the paper and we jump to that scene.... I'd prefer it be in chronological order. There was also something off with the historical aspect. It's a historical setting--with horses, dresses, rules and etiquette, and a coronation, but I never felt transported as I tend to do with good historicals.

The Firebird's Feather By cleosmom Every once in a while I like to venture into different categories of books that are offered up for review and I was glad of the opportunity to read this book. Marjorie Eccles takes an interesting part of history in England and adds a twist of mystery to it as we have a young lady, getting ready to debut in all the social circles in 1911 London, with women's rights and the new king getting ready for his coronation and puts a murder down in the middle of it.This is my first time reading a book by this author but it certainly will not be my last.

By Denise Crawford Historical fiction involving a murder investigation and family secrets set in Britain circa 1911. King Edward has just died and preparations are underway for the coronation of King George. Despite the celebratory mood in London, brave women are protesting for the right to vote and all of those demonstrations have not been peaceful ones. In the Challoner household, not far from Hyde Park, the aristocratic family is about to experience its own upheaval in the form of the shooting death of the lady of the house, Lydia Kasparov Challoner.Lydia, the daughter of a Russian revolutionary who fled to Britain for asylum, was shot with a gun known to be the weapon of choice for many foreign revolutionary gangs while out riding with her escort one Sunday. It's suspected that her murder might be connected to the Letts -- terrorists who had also fled Russia and joined other lawless expatriates leading to violence in the streets. How might Lydia have been involved with any of these activities since her father had died long ago and why was she targeted? Her daughter, 18-year old Kitty, is caught up in the search for her mother's killer as the police question all of Lydia's family and acquaintances. Kitty joins forces with Marcus Villiers to do some sleuthing on her own.This novel is quite short and meanders a bit as snippets of information and clues are revealed or discovered. None of the characters are very well-developed and are quite superficially portrayed. The plot is a bit thin and when the murderer is identified it seems anticlimactic after all the red herrings. Capossere Hour of Need is the concluding book in Michael Pryor's Laws of Magic's series and it brings a good series to a fitting and satisfying close. I won't bother recapping the general premise as you'll want to have read the prior (or should that be Pryor) books first so you can check out the setting etc. in my earlier reviews. Suffice to say it's set in an alternate Edwardian time period that has been moving toward and then finally arriving at their version of World War I involving both technology and magic.All the major characters return for Hour of Need: Aubrey--whom I've described as a mix of Holmes, Tow Swift, and Hermione Granger; his best friend George--reliably strong and warm-hearted; Caroline--his crack shot, martial artist maybe-finally-girlfriend-this-book; and Sophie, coming into her own magically in this book as well as moving more seriously into her relationship with George. As one might expect in the conclusion, the villain--Dr. Tremaine--is here as well, and yes, he and Aubrey do have a final confrontation.The book is darker that the earlier ones in the sense that while the first few were heading into the war and the last one has the group fighting at the fringes, here we see the actual front and it has all the horror as the non-alternate-universe WWI--the trenches, wire fencing, shell-shocked soldiers, are all here and it makes for a nice raising of the stakes as well as some strong, affecting imagery.The grim nature and darker imagery in the middle section strengthen the book, as does the continued development of the relationship among the characters and the movement toward an awareness of the horror of war no matter which side (that isn't to say Pryor offers up any moral relativism here; he simply doesn't shy away from the sometimes monstrous things being done).Hour of Need `s flaws will be familiar to readers of the series--though they are presented as difficult, it still feels that things come a bit too easily or quickly to Aubrey and that's true as well for Sophia, whose magic skills are moving perhaps a bit too fast. Though Pryor still does an excellent job in the presentation of the magic itself as a kind of science in its intellectual rigor. Tremaine remains a bit too abstract, the confrontation is a bit perfunctory, and this book, like others, could have lost 50-75 pages or so.But overall, as mentioned, it's a fitting and satisfactory conclusion. I've called the series "charmingly old-fashioned" and it remains so to the end. Too old-fashioned for some I've no doubt, but personally I found it to be one of the series' greatest strengths and, to be fully honest, a bit of a relief amidst all the "gritty" or dystopic YA fiction. Having read it start to finish, I can happily recommend it.

Coming from an Army family, I could really relate to the settings and personalities. McMahon does a great job storytelling, bouncing between the time of the Korea conflict and a date in the late sixties, early seventies. While set with a military backdrop, the novel itself is a story of murder and intrigue, and has some great plot twists and surprises! Pick this one up, as I know you'll thoroughly enjoy it!

By Gettysburg Dave Having read many books in the genre of historical fiction, I found Richard McMahon’s “The Dark Side of Glory” to be one of the most interesting and informative. It was a compelling read with its unexpected plot turns and its interesting information about post-WWII events. While reading it on my iPad whenever I encountered an historical reference with which I was not completely familiar I checked McMahon out and he was always spot-on. Much to my chagrin there was one significant event that I learned about for the first time. I highly recommend this book and look forward to future Richard McMahon books.

I could not put it down. The romance, the intrigue. all were page turners. Beyond the entertainment factor, it was very informative about how the military community operates, about which I confess i am totally ignorant. It was so well written, the reader feels that he is involved in all of the military action.Thank you, Richard McMahon.
