21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. A novel of suspense and the south By Rhinestone Sisterhood This novel isn't just about the south--it's OF the south. The rhythms of speech and the cadences of language in the descriptions place you firmly in a real world that is recognizable to anyone who's ever been south of the Mason Dixon line, and would convey the world beautifully to anyone who has not. King does a great job in yielding up the world itself and then populates it with interesting characters, especially the protagonist, who faces a dilemma that is familiar and relatable -- how to find your place in a new group -- yet becomes progressively more unnerving, even sinister. The echoes of Rebecca will resonate with those familiar with that work, but the suspense and emotional stakes of Moonrise itself will ring true for all readers. We root for Helen to unlock the secrets that seem to deny her entry into her new husband's old life, and hold our breath that doing so will not come at too great a price.

This book kept me up till 5:30 a.m. because I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened. It's a Southern Gothic set in the Blue Ridge mountains in a mysterious mansion with eerie gardens where night flowers bloom. It's a mystery, a romance, a story of friendships, betrayals, and ultimately love and forgiveness. The three narrators develop the story beautifully as the alliances and mysteries unfold to the deliciously satisfying ending. I've loved Cassandra King's other novels, but this one is definitely , in my opinion, her best. I'd give it six stars if that were possible.
11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Moonrise by Cassandra King By Kaye Wilkinson Barley I have long been a fan of Cassandra King. MOONRISE, I think, moves her to a whole new level. If you loved REBECCA, you will love MOONRISE. If you haven't yet experienced REBECCA, you will want to after reading MOONRISE. I'm a huge fan of southern lit, and of gothics - this is a perfect blend of both with nary a misstep. If you've somehow missed discovering Cassandra King until now, I think this book might be the perfect place to start. And if you're an Anne Rivers Siddons fan, well, honeys - you will eat this up, I promise! And, as I so often do with favorite authors, I'm now tapping my toe impatiently awaiting the next Cassandra King. In the meantime, I'm sure I'm going to be re-reading MOONRISE, this time to savor each and every deliciously written phrase and perfectly placed word. Thank you, Ms. King!
