DON'T WAIT AND LEARN THE ART OF PERSUASION TODAY!!! Whether you are a salesman, a student, an employee, or just a home buddy who lives with other members of the family, at some point, you will ask someone to do something for you. It is an inevitable part of daily life—you need other people’s help on different kinds of things. Sometimes it is easy to ask for a favor, but most of the time, it can be a real pain in the neck. Unlike babies or people in deathbeds, healthy adults like you would usually have to work to get what you want from somebody. Unless you have a written contract that can put the other person in jail if they do not say “yes”, you would have to ask, beg and plead just to get the other person to do you a simple favor. The art of persuasion seems like a tough skill to master. Have you ever wondered why other people seem to do it naturally?

By Robbie Walsh I never read the original 30 Days of Night graphic novel but now I kind of want to. This isn't a perfect story by any means but being someone who very rarely reads anything and being a huge X-Files fan I found this to be a very satisfying read. I don't want to say much about the plot because I don't know how much would be considered spoilers but the way the story unfolds is really fun. There's a really good blend of horror and action and even the usual bits of humor that you expect to get from Mulder and Scully. If you are an X-Files fan I say this is well worth reading.

Best Ebook Our Lives Matter: A Womanist Queer Theology, by Pamela R. Lightsey

Our Lives Matter uses the tenor of the 2014 national protests that emerged as a response to excessive police force against Black people to frame the book as following the discursive tradition of liberation theologies broadly speaking and womanist theology specifically. Using a womanist methodological approach, Pamela R. Lightsey helps readers explore the impact of oppression against Black LBTQ women while introducing them to the emergent intellectual movement known as queer theology. The author privileges their narratives and experiences as she reviews several doctrines and dogma of the Christian church. Theological reflection on contemporary debates such as same-sex marriage and ordination rights make this book a valuable resource to clergy, students of theology, LGBTQ persons and allies. "Writing in the shadow of mass killings of unarmed black persons in the United States, Lightsey's Our Lives Matter: A Womanist Queer Theology is a timely publication. This valuable interdisciplinary resource provides a succinct overview of the doctrine of creation that is informed by a discussion on identity. Our Lives Matter challenges readers to move beyond theory and to acknowledge the full humanity of all persons and is a must-read for any who self-identifies as Christian." --Angela D. Sims, Dean of Academic Programs and Associate Professor of Ethics and Black Church Studies, Saint Paul School of Theology Pamela R. Lightsey is an associate dean and clinical assistant professor of contextual theology and practice at Boston University School of Theology. She is also a self-identified queer lesbian ordained elder in full connection in the United Methodist Church. A national leader among LGBTQ social justice activists, Dr. Lightsey's writings have appeared in Washington Post (online), Religion Dispatches and Black Theology Journal.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Spidey Takes On The Gangs Of New York! By Thwip! Raised on Spider–Man taught me to accept the good times with the utterly horrendous. Having said that I have largely enjoyed this latest run written by Dan Slott. As to this book, sometimes the descriptions contained on the back covers are pretty weak, this one does a pretty good job, but if you are looking ahead be warned that the following does contain *Spoilers*….------------ “Fans looking for something a little more classic and with less grit should definitely take a look at this super–hero comic that’s unashamed for being exciting, fun and still Spider–Man.” – HyperGeeky, com”“New York City’s underworld has been in a state of flux since the Kingpin got taken out. Now, a vicious gang war is heating up, and Spider–Man is determined to stop it. But he’s not the only one. Police Captain Yuri Watanabe is trying to curtail the madness – both in her job, and as the vigilante the Wraith! But do Spidey and Wraith play by the same rules? The two uneasy allies try to keep the gang war from spiraling out of control – but when Hammerhead enters the picture, all bets are off. Soon, Spider–Man finds himself caught between Wraith and a cabal of deadly super criminals! Can Spidey put out the fire, or will the underworld burn? New York City’s crime landscape will never be the same!”“Collecting Amazing Spider–Man (2014) #16.1–20.1, written by Gerry Conway and illustrated by Carlo Barberi.”

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good By Angel Delcid I was hoping to get a continuation from the last volume but instead it was a side story, revolving around a gang feud with a few villains (including black cat). It seems like the writers are really sticking to their guns with trying to make black cat into this vicious villain; and that's ok with me. It's good to see the actions of past events (superior spiderman series) affecting peter, a lot of comic book series would make an arc then once it was done they would never mention it again. But honestly the story didn't interest me as much as the other stories did; it's kind of hard to top the spidey verse volume. Overall I recommend it

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Definitely not the best By Marc_Specter I would say this was a rare miss from Slott since he took over the book. Rare but getting more frequent as I did not enjoy Spider-Verse as much as I thought I was going to. With the mega-event Secret Wars looming soon after this storyline, I can see why they did not want to push any major storyline before that began and this seemed kind of like a throw away arc.

Best PDF Ebook Dusting for God's Fingerprints, by George W Baum

There is one book in the Bible where God's name does not appear. However, if we look at the story in retrospect, His fingerprints are all over it. So it is sometimes in our lives. Listening to our own stories, we are often able to detect God's hand. In Dusting for God's Fingerprints, stories such as "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" and "Playing the Hand You're Dealt" point in directions where prints may be found. "Adam and Eve Up a Tree" and "Remembering to Laugh" give biblical insights into how to look for those fingerprints, and "Nicaraguan Epiphanies," "Redemptive Winks," and "The Language of Grace (As Overheard in a Blues Club)" are stories that help us catch glimpses of God's hand in our lives when none seems apparent, and "Joey's Equation" (forgiveness), "Sam's Club" (compassion), and "The Lion Lady" (kindness) give us tools to remove obstacles to finding prints. "The Dawn of the Remarkable" reveals the one fingerprint that gives hope in making sense of it all-and finally the dots are connected in a Theo-poetic jazz rendering of "Dusting for God's Fingerprints."

Inspring and friendly to read for believers, seekers, and unbelievers By Kazuyo Kathy For many years people, who have listened to George's sermons, have told him to make them as a book. It took time, but finally he made it.The Bible tells the relationship between men, who were born in Israel in different times of the human history, and God, but even now He is seeking the relationship with each of us intervening in our lives. If we can find such a God’s "fingerprints" in our lives, it is a great encouragement and inspiration no matter what we face. Retelling twelve stories in the Bible George picked in an unconventional style with his wit and humor, he helps us to find God's fingerprints in our lives. It is friendly to find the points and friendly even for people who are unfamiliar to the Bible.

Laughter and Tears By Leonor vander Pluym This book is so emotionally engaging that it’s hard to put down and it’s format of a complete story itself in each chapter allows the reader to stop and have time to reflect. The writing is imaginative, poetic, entertaining, and musical and at the same time deeply spiritual and thought provoking. Since George Baum mixes life experiences with the stories he tells wisdom emerges. It was easy to identify similar human elements at work in my on life. As I read each chapter, a constant back and forth between laughter and tears occurred. That's the kind of wonderful location to be in. That's the place where I, the reader feel my heart open to the lesson of the message and I do begin seeing God's fingerprints in my life.

A beautifully written collection of sermons By Amazon Customer A beautifully written collection of sermons, complete with touches of humor, that reveals God's love for us and how He is ever-present in our lives. Baum's accessible, intellectual, and encouraging work is a tremendous read. A terrific book.

Excellent Read By Adrian Greaves Considering I'm not a huge reader, when I do pick up a book, the author has to grab my attention in the first few pages. Relation Advice did not disappoint in doing that. I purchased the book and read it from cover to cover in very little time. Very well written, insightful and thought provoking. It made me reexamine my past relationships and where they went wrong and has even me the needed information to approach any future relationships with a different outlook. Looking forward to book 2.

Auslander—the German word for “outsider.” In this novel, four women explore the many ways one can be an outsider geographically, culturally, and emotionally. They chronicle the life of the Jahn family in the close-knit German community of Schoenberg, Texas, during the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Their counterpoint dialogues draw us into the family’s marriages and separations, births and deaths, business failures, and moments of joy and into the German-Texan culture with its sometimes rigid traditions and prejudices. The voices we hear are from Queenie, matriarch of the family and wife of Beno; Carol Anne, the bride of Queenie’s son, Fritz; Vera, the niece Queenie and Beno tried to raise as a daughter; and Sheila, Carol Anne’s cabaret-singing mother from Houston.Fritz Jahn, young, ambitious, and reserved, is the center around which the four women revolve. He truly loves Carol Anne but cannot understand her inability to settle down in Schoenberg. His closeness with Vera threatens to go beyond brotherly love and complicates Vera’s relationship with Carol Anne and Queenie. Sheila is worldwise, practical and puzzled by conventional family life. Perhaps the most compelling voice belongs to Queenie, the one who holds the family together. Speaking in the inverted sentence structure of those for whom German is the more natural language, she interprets and comments on what she sees with insight and wisdom.Mary Powell, a resident of the Hill Country, captures that area’s climate and geography in rich descriptions of fields and wildflowers and terrifyingly real scenes of a flash flood. She is equally insightful in portraying the lingering German culture of small towns like Schoenberg. In Auslander Powell creates a powerful and realistic story of a family defined by their heritage yet sharing universal joys and sorrows.

Auslander, by Mary Powell

From Publishers Weekly To the German-American inhabitants of Schoenberg, a town in the Texas hill country, an "auslander" is "someone who comes from a different region and either doesn't understand or won't bend to the local ways." Vera Jahn, one of four women who narrate alternating chapters in this remarkably confident and powerful first novel, also observes that "being a woman makes you an auslander. You're always having to earn your citizenship in a place where men, white men to be specific, decide what's important." From 1967 through 1987, the propertied Jahn family see such established rules challenged and their love of the land tested, as they try to balance commitment and freedom, stability and change. Representative of a new and different way of life is Carol Anne, a "city girl" seeking roots, who marries young Fritz Jahn and then finds him undemonstrative and patriarchal. Like her mother and fellow narrator, Sheila, flirtatious Carol Anne craves excitement and initially shirks responsibility, briefly deserting her family in an unsuccessful attempt to become a singer like her mother. Fritz's cousin, serious, level-headed Vera Jahn, resembles Carol Anne in her love of independence. Vera, raised by her maternal uncle, Benno, and his wife, Queenie, alongside Fritz, returns from pursuing an education in German language and literature to settle on Jahn land. She cherishes her single status, despite the guilt-ridden mutual attraction between herself and the maritally unhappy Fritz. Underneath the storm and stress of everyday life (including questionable land deals and troubled relationships) runs Queenie's narrative, her voice one of quiet strength as she tells of the past, of hardship and acceptance. Joys and tragedies unite the Jahns and the community, yet conflicts (Carol Anne's dissatisfaction, Vera's loneliness) remain unsolved at the book's conclusion, mirroring the evolving relationship between the people and the land. (Apr.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Powell tells the gentle story of two decades (roughly 1967 to 1987) in the life of the Jahn family in Texas' river country. The tale is told in the voices of four very different women. Queenie Jahn, the matriarch, is steeped in the rich German tradition of the nineteenth-century settlers of this unforgiving land. Her niece, Vera, the prim historian, breaks free just long enough to establish her independence by earning academic bona fides and then returns to the bosom of the family, especially her one true love, her cousin Fritz. Carol Anne is an "auslander," literally an outlander, who marries Fritz. Sheila, Carol Anne's itinerant musician mother, is the most outlandish auslander. She has instilled in her daughter a wild spirit and an unwillingness to settle, character traits that won't reconcile easily with the stolid, self-denying Germans. Two floods, each of which has tragic repercussions, frame this lovingly crafted story. George Needham

Coming from a German background myself, I found Auslander extremely spellbinding. You don't, however, need to be German to feel the sense of family and understand the changes that a family goes through with each new generation. The fact that Mary Powell told her story through the voices of her characters made the reader feel as if she were reading diary entries of the four women in the book. It made the book more personal and insightful. If I had to compare Powell's style to a modern novelist, I would say she's right up there with Barbara Kingsolver.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ausländer By A Customer While I loved the story this book told, I found the many errors in the German very distracting (the German word is "Ausländer," not "Auslander.") I grew up in Austin, and knew there were Germans in Texas, although I am not one of them. It was apparent that the author has never seen German written, and evidently the publishing company did not see fit to hire an editor who had. At first I thought that she was trying to represent possible linguistic shifts in Texas German, but since one of the main characters was a student of German Language and Literature, it was not believable for her to be unable to spell in German, and this was not the only problem she displayed with the German language.I did love the character development, and I hope Powell continues to write; she is obviously quite talented. She had good insights into the complexity of the female role in society.

Good information, but not sure I'll do it for my children By Ruby Loves Adventure Bought this book on a free promo, even though it is a very controversial topic - where aromatherapy may provide some benefits to your children and to your babies. Not all oil products are harmful, of course - as baby oils have been used forever, this book gives you information should you decide to use essential oils for your kids. Now, I wouldn't want to recommend that, but the book gives scents that you can use and common mistakes other people make.I'm giving it a five star review for the information it provided, but I'm not sure I'll be using essential oils for my children.

The MAD Art of Jack Davis: The Complete Collection of His Work from MAD Comics #1-23, by Jack Davis

About the Author Jack Davis was born on December 2, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia. After serving in the Navy, Davis enrolled in night classes at the Art Students League and began working on The Saint syndicated newspaper strip. It was in 1951 that he began working for E.C. on their horror, war and suspense titles. The juxtaposition of Davis's  "cartoony" style with the grim and at times gruesome E.C. scripts quickly made him one of the line's most popular artists. Shortly thereafter he began his decades-long association with MAD, where his humorous, over-the-top style meshed perfectly with MAD's zany irreverence. Davis has worked in virtually every area of commercial illustration, including movie posters, advertising campaigns, album covers, magazine covers and illustrations.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Jack Davis, Superstar. By James Elfers Before Senate hearings, "The Seduction Of The Innocent" and the arrival of the Comic Book Code that killed every other EC Comics publication, "Mad" was a comic book that primarily satirized OTHER comic books. For the first 23 issues of "Mad," "The usual Gang of idiots" worked in full color. Jack Davis is the last surviving founding member of "Mad," and probably the artist who had the widest audience. He has been awarded every possible tribute a comic artist can garner. Folks of a certain generation will recognize his work on everything from greeting cards, magazine illustrations, the cover of "TV Guide" and record album covers. Not bad for a man who had little formal training in art. This edition reprints all of Davis' work from the first incarnation of "Mad." In this volume, one gets the sense not only of what "Mad" the comic book was in the early 1950's but also what it would become once it morphed into a magazine. Davis opened up "Mad" to broader and more cutting parody targets. From the first story "Hooha!" which parodies EC Comics own horror titles, such as "Tales From The Crypt" to the last entry, "The Barefoot Nocontessa" which began both Davis' and "Mad's" legendary habit of parodying the latest Hollywood hits, the scope of achievement on display is impressive. Not every reader will enjoy the same stories, but there are tastes for every palate in this handsome, bargain priced book. For me the hits include, "Murder the Husband" which sends up hoary murder cliches in hilarious and off the wall ways; the full frontal assault on the attack on comic books and smarmy busybodies like Dr. Wertham, entitled "The Newspaper!" which warned kids to be wary of what their parents read, is at once, ballsy, biting, and laser point accurate. "The comparison, "Book! Movie!" about how Hollywood waters down literature is every bit as timely today as it was in 1954 Eerily prescient in this age of twenty-four-hour cable networks and politics masquerading as news is "What's My Shine!" which envisions congressional hearing being sponsored by tacky advertising companies and sexy women being added to the otherwise austere panel in the name of ratings and sex appeal. Man did he hit a home run with that one! If you grew up reading "Mad" paperbacks, some of these stories may be familiar to you as they appeared over the years in various reprint collections, HOWEVER, here they are reproduced in the glorious full color (or lack thereof) as Jack Davis originally created them. For that fact alone, this book deserves to be read and treasured. You will not be disappointed.

I have always wanted to see a gathering of his earliest work with Mad. This fit the bill in a big way. It's a combination of colorized and black and white examples of his art. I look forward to the next volume. The only thing I would have wanted beyond what was offered, was that this be a little larger format and hardback. That would have made the book perfect for me.

Lesley I'm not positive, but I think this is story number six in the Aelf Fen Mystery series by author Alys Clare. I have read several of her novels in the Hawkenlye series and was intrigued to see what this set of novels was about. I was definitely not disappointed. For someone living in the American South the fens of England carry a mystique all by themselves so when you add in a mystery set during Norman times, this was pretty hard for me to resist.Since I had not read any previous novels in the series I wanted to see how easily I could become assimilated into the world created here by both geography and character. Make no mistake, the location in the fens area for the major portion of this book plays a definite role in the story and Alys Clare has described it wonderfully for someone such as me who has never experienced it first hand. The torrential rainfall combined with a high tide produces flooding on a widespread scale which contributes to the discovery of the body of a woman. Lassair, healer and student of Gurdyman, was requested by Jack Chevestrier to accompany him from Cambridge to Aelf Fen to try to locate the family of the wealthy woman and her infant son who have arrived in town with no information of who her husband's relatives are or where they live. Since they both are on the scene when a woman's dead body is discovered and Chevestrier works with the sheriff of Cambridge and Lassair knows the fens like the back of her hand they are instructed to solve the riddle of the identity of both women, the living and the dead.If you are a follower of this series you will be glad to know that this book is almost equally divided between what is happening to Lassair in England and Rollo Guiscard as he makes his way in the treacherous business of acting as a spy for King William. By traveling throughout the East he has seen the results of clashes between Christians, Jews, and Turks in the Holy Land. His destination now is Constantinople where he must try, with no credentials at all, to gain an audience with Alexius Comnenus, ruler of this great city with the enemy Selijuk Turks on its doorsteps. This was an interesting way to present this portion of the series; take two of the main characters and have them advance the story arc forward while keeping them apart. I had very little problem with understanding how this portion of the story fit with what might have come before, although it did make me curious and desirous of reading the previous novels. Instead of having the entire story written in an 800 page novel which can be rather overwhelming to contemplate, here the stories were presented in manageable pieces that allowed for full character development in addition to a good mystery for me to help solve. I enjoyed this very much. The mysticism didn't overwhelm the story or the characters because it simply seemed a normal part of Lassair and an augmentation of her healer gifts. She made great strides to becoming an independent woman in this novel and I'm interested in seeing where her relationship with the shining stone will take her.I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

We meet several well-drawn characters and learn about various ways of life, from a healer to an alchemist to the fen dwellers. A seemingly well-off woman and small child have arrived at the quay and she is looking for an escort to relatives in the fen village. I enjoyed this portion of the story, which is slow-paced like the Cadfael books. At the same time we get the interspersed story of a Norseman who is travelling around the Mediterranean from city to city and trouble spot to worse. Because he is on some spying mission and mostly alone, we do not get a good grasp of his character and I never got to like him or, after a few sessions, care what he was doing. His actions seemed to have no bearing on the lives of the healer and her friends. He did serve to show us the scope of travel and trade of the Norse, but I would have preferred if these were two separate books so we could concentrate on one at a time.

An enjoyable mystery with engaging characters By DragonflyDebbi Another in Alys Clare's series featuring the healer Lassair, Blood of the South puts Lassair in the position of investigating the mysterious death of a young blond woman; who is she, how did she die, and how did her body end up in the fens? Lassiar is also trying to find the family of a mysterious noblewoman, who always wears veils and doesn't have much interest in her baby. Asking her assistance in these investigations is a handsome Norman sheriff. Meanwhile, Lassair's magical abilities are tested and enhanced by a shining stone.....Lots going on in this book, and the characters are very engaging. I was rooting for Lassair and her sheriff as they investigated all the strange happenings. I did figure out who was who before the end (which is unusual for me!), and was sort of surprised it took Lassair as long as it did, but still the story held my attention and was very enjoyable.

It is set in Durham City. It is narrated by Clara who has just recovered from a nervous breakdown and the loss of a baby through a miscarriage. Her husband has got a job as a lecturer at Durham University. She is a very nervous person and we can see as we read more of the book that her husband Henry is playing on her lack of confidence. She goes to help out at the prison and is fascinated by the prisoner Mary Ann Cotton who is accused of murdering various husbands and children. Ms Cotton is pregnant and is awaiting trial. Clara can't understand why anyone would want to murder a child and wants to know all about her.An excellent read and very well written. I would recommend it and give it 5 stars.

We tend to think that the 1800's England was a gentle refined era and forget the desperation of poverty and cruelty that was abundant. We also seem to think that being in the upper classes was a serene happy life. Ah, this story will set you straight.Enjoy this read.

She develops the characters very well and the story could take a few different directions right til the ending! Very compelling! You can tell in Marjorie's descriptions of the architecture and countryside that she has really done her homework and what it would have been like to be a very "suppressed wife" at the turn of the last century! Well done!

In the sequel to Lambda Literary Award-winning Death by Silver, metaphysician Ned Mathey and private detective Julian Lynes again challenge magical and murderous threats in a Victorian London not quite the city in our history books.

Mathey is recruited by Scotland Yard to assist the new Metaphysical Crimes Squad in the case of a literally heartless corpse. Mathey soon discovers that the magic used to rob the man of his heart and life does not conform to the laws of modern metaphysics and then a second victim turns up. Meanwhile, a minor poet hires Lynes to track down and stop the blackmailer threatening to reveal him as the pseudonymous author of popular romances. When another target of the same blackmailer, a friend of Mathey's assistant Miss Frost, appeals for aid, Lynes and Mathey begin to suspect murders and blackmail are connected.

Digging deep into the clandestine worlds of lawless antique magic and the gay demimonde, Mathey and Lynes must uncover the source and nature of a heart-stealing supernatural creature before it can kill them too, even as they face the scandal of exposing themselves as sodomites in order to close the case.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Subtle and carefully crafted, a rich and believable tale of magic and social mores. By Ulysses Dietz A Death at the Dionysus ClubBy Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold4.5 starsNed Mathey and Julian Lynes are old school chums. They also might be in love with each other. The emotional bass line of this beautifully crafted novel is how these two men, without any support from the society around them, negotiate creating a life together. What I love most about this book is the fact that this crucial theme is rarely the overt focus of the story. It is ever-present, but delicately interwoven into the complex action that pretends to be the main point. This is Holmes and Watson with a gay back-story where the backstory is, ultimately, more important.Period novels always make me nervous. I’m too deeply immersed in the 19th century professionally (museum curator), and have read too much Victorian literature not to be aware of writing styles and anachronisms. I was well into “A Death at the Dionysus Club” when I realized that Mesdames Scott and Griswold had managed to write another novel that didn’t push any of these buttons to spoil my simple reading pleasure. The second piece of tremendous bravado is the fact that the authors have created a believable, vivid late Victorian London in which magic—normalized into practical parlance by the term metaphysics—is as much a part of everyday life as, say, technology is today. Without making a big fuss about it, Scott and Griswold have created a false reality that rings true, even to dividing the magical into trained and amateur, and within the profession into theoretical (metaphysicists) and practicing (metaphysicians). It is all done so matter-of-factly that it barely distracts from the building of the narrative and the characters. (I can’t help but compare this with J.K. Rowling’s fevered depiction of the separate Muggle and Magical worlds in her much-loved Harry Potter books.)This second in the Lynes/Mathey series is richer and deeper than the first. It delights less in the presence and appearance of magic (at least until the end, which is pretty hair-raising) and focuses on the lives of two gay men in Victorian London, as they work together and try to establish the boundaries of their relationship in the context of a virulently anti-homosexual world. The painful realities of living as sodomites (their word!) is more significant, ultimately, than the use and abuse of metaphysics by the citizens, high and low, of a great metropolis. But it is magic, in the end, that casts a brilliant, painful spotlight on what Ned and Julian mean to each other, and the discreet, low-key way in which the authors make this clear touched me deeply. Because it felt right. It felt true. This was a deeply satisfying book to read. I look forward to seeing where Scott and Griswold will take Ned and Julian next.

Do you know how you pick something up, read the description, and know that you'll finish it no matter how bad it is, and so you begin reading in a kind of resigned, almost depressed way? Well, like that, except that the previous book and this one turned out to be *magnificently* written. *So* much better written than they had to be! The level of detail on the physical and social milieu, and the attention to realistic character development was just phenomenal! My only complaint about the first book was that the magical world-building aspects seemed underdeveloped, a bit slapped on. That got fault got *amply* addressed in "A Death at the Dionysus Club" and turned into a great strength rather than weakness. These books are *terrific.* Now what I want to see in the third book is an exciting and hugely expanded role for Miss Frost, Ned's secretary, and then in the fourth book, I want both Ned's and Julian's families to encroach differently but incredibly uncomfortably on their lives together...

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing, thoughtful, suspenseful, engaging. Even better than the first book. By Niki I do declare this second book is even better than the 1st one Death by Silver (Julian Lynes and Ned Mathey series Book 1) in this series. As in the 1st book, I enjoy the well crafted setting of Victorian London. I love that the writers have taken the guys' British reserved romance, restrained by the times, to a more realistic level where they are forced to examine their feelings if what they have is to survive. Both guys are such charming characters, Julian the more rebellious one with less regard for the law and Ned the more restrained one but no less valiant. The mystery part of the plot with its magic and supernatural aspect is most intriguing as layers are revealed with each death, the last part have me riveted to my seat even if I know our heroes will make it! The new development with Ned's permanent engagement by the police certainly adds more depth to the guys' investigation. What really stands out in this book is how well the writers examined the gay community during that time. The dangers if discovered, who could protect them, not only from hostile outside forces but from their "own kind", the malice within the gay community itself where the vulnerable ones are abused, and yet the need to preserve the community and its clubs because it is so vital for their sanity. All these is seamlessly weaved into the story which at its core is a supernatural mystery permeated by a sense of urgency as the number of bodies piled up. This second book with its quality writing is such a pleasure to read and I hope there is much more to come, Please!

By the age of 40 so much had happened that Marjory felt compelled to search for her birth mother, perhaps even meet her. The only information she had was a name and an old address. Would that be enough? It seemed not, but Marjory was not one to give up at th first hurdle. Despite the problems she was determined to continue with her quest. Will she find the happiness she is seeking? Lost and Found is based on a true story, and a fascinating one at that.

A good, insightful read By Noelle Lost and Found, a story about an adopted woman’s search for her birth parents, struck a chord with me because I am the mother of two adopted children. We told both our daughter and our son the circumstance of their birth and what information we had about their birth parents from the get-go. Unlike Marjory, the main character in this novel and who is actually a real person, neither child has wanted to seek their birth parent, at least not yet. But Marjory’s strong desire to do so and the reactions of those loved ones around her, are completely normal – as is the story itself.Marjory is a cheerful person by nature, which is probably a lucky thing, because the stresses of hunting for birth parents are real and profound. The difficulties she faces also ring true: little information, setbacks in her search, roadblocks set in her way.I read this book in two days and was happy that it had a satisfying ending. So many of these searches do not.Alistair Dunlop has done a good job with this story. His characters are engaging and the reader is drawn into their lives. The passage of time and the evolution of Marjory’s family reminded me of Maeve Binchy’s books. The most important aspect of this novel, however, is the education it gives its readers about adoption and the roller coaster emotions of the adoptive parents, the adoptee and the birth parents.I recommend this as a good read and an educational experience.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gently paced and thoughtfully told story By Georgia Rose Lost and Found is closely based on a true story and I think it is the fact that the author has captured this aspect so well that gives the story authenticity. Understandably personal details, names and locations have been changed but the central character, Marjory, has given her blessing to her tale being told and has clearly worked with the author to ensure the events are correct. This novel tells the life story of Marjory right from when she was adopted as a baby. Adoption is dealt with in different ways. Some parents keep this information from the child until they feel they are old enough to understand it and some choose to allow the child to grow up fully aware of their history. In Marjory’s case she grew up in full knowledge that she was adopted and was perfectly happy with her place in the family. However, as time moved on and the family changed, for various reasons, Marjory set out to find her biological parents. And it is at this point that you can particularly tell it is a personal story as unlike what can appear in fiction this tells the tale of the struggle to find out information, the disappointments and the fact that there is not always a happy ever after…at least in some respects. I shall leave the details at that point as I don’t want to give anything away. This is a well written, gently paced and thoughtfully told story although occasionally with a bit more detail than necessary. Despite this it manages to draw you on as you want to discover the outcome. Those seeking their own biological parents would do well to read it because being based on reality it sheds some light on the process, as well as the patience, and strength, needed to follow it.
