When A Man's A Man: A Western Mystery, by Harold Bell Wright

From the Back Cover This classic Western story takes place on a cattle ranch. When a mysterious stranger comes walking into town seeking employment at the Cross-Triangle Ranch, life changes for these simple country folk. The stranger goes by the name Honorable Patches, and throughout the book, his tumultuous past and his intentions for coming out West are revealed. Patches is put to the test many times by the other employees including the caretaker, Phil Acton, and the owner, Dean Baldwin. As Patches continues to prove his worth, the ranch employees learn the importance of a natural life and its role in what it means to be a man. Harold Bell Wright (1872-1944) was a Disciples of Christ minister. He traveled extensively and wrote about the goodness of mankind. After authoring That Printer of Udell's-a book that inspired Ronald Reagan-he wrote The Shepherd of the Hills, which has sold more than one million copies. Wright's ongoing battle with tuberculosis led him to settle in Imperial Valley, California, where he wrote The Winning of Barbara Worth. The following books are published by Pelican as a set: A Harold Bell Wright Trilogy: The Shepherd of the Hills, The Calling of Dan Matthews, and God and the Groceryman.

The advertising at the back of this 1916 edition boasts that nearly seven million of his books had sold, which I assume was big business. "When A Man's A Man" is set in Arizona among ranchers. A city slicker wanders onto the scene and searches out the Cross-Triangle Ranch. Not knowing how to ride a horse, he walks, which several passers-by point to as unusual behavior. He meets the foreman of the ranch, Phil Acton, who he then asks for a job so that he can learn how to be a man. Asked his name, he quickly stumbles for an answer and names himself "Honorable Patches." The romantic storyline has Phil's love for Katy Reid who has been to college, comes home and dismisses Phil as a cowpuncher. As the story unwinds, we have numerous episodes of Patches learning how to rope, shoot and excel at all aspects that show he is truly a man's man. There is also the wrinkle of the gang at the Tailholt Ranch who go around trying to steal the other ranchers' calves that wander the open range. Yavapai Joe is an interesting character, a weak easily dominated follower of the abusive Nick Cambert from Tailholt. About two-thirds of the way through the book, the mysterious identity of Patches is revealed as is his romantic past. After 93 years, the book is a quick read from what seems a more simple time. Wright's themes that money can't buy love and that intellectual snobbery does not indicate depth of spirit ring true today. Enjoy!

Real Men Read Harold Bell Wright By Steven Fantina With its testosterone-sounding title, one might expect this book to be a tale of priaptic exploits. But when realizing it's from the pen of master scribe Harold Bell Wright-once described as "the apostle of the wholesome" a more realistic plot comes to mind. This enjoyable adventure does take place on a ranch and pays apt tribute to the cowboy way but it is as unadulterated as the prairie sky over the Arizona mesa where its action commences. The tale of an overly cultured gentleman who escapes to the untamed Southwest in an effort to become a true man lacks the trappings of modern tales of machismo. Rather it details the meatamorphasis of a citified plebian who follows his heart and embraces true responsibility, probity, and duty. Along the way he osculates the exciting episodes found in HBW's books and is influenced by the genuine characters who populate his oeuvre. It seems every move that Mr. Wright ever made yielded a vibrant novel and fortunately his pereginrations took him far and wide. Few litterateurs have possessed a gift as keen as his in terms of creating a written diorama. When the book's action takes place at the rodeo, readers feel an impulse to get out of the way of charging steers. When Honorable Patches (a character's spur-of-the-moment pseudonym that sticks) gets into a fight, we duck his punches as a tropism. And in a later chapter as a careening car heads toward a trapped child, many readers will need to pause and catch an escaped breath.A hagiography was published about Mr. Wright that bore the natural title "Storyteller to America." He conveyed the rudimentary as magical and invited readers to take part in daring quests from the safety of our easy chairs. "When a Man's A Man" is another one of his books that prove a grown-up allegory filled with suspense, romance, and excitement can be as pure as the desert air.

It is historically and geographically accurate. The ranch headquarters portrayed in the novel is today the headquarters of the Las Vegas Ranch in Williamson Valley just outside Prescott, AZ.

And even if you could, it would take a master craftsman to untangle what's left of your brain afterwards. Jerry Stahl is at his most inspired, hilarious best in this demented tale of everyday madness. I laughed so hard I coulda busted a vein. Not since his brilliant Permanent Midnight has this great author's amazing talent been so on point. Solid gold, from start to finish!

He's a super witty, hilarious, and humble legend; if you ever get a chance to see him do a reading, go. Although I'm a big fan of his fiction ( Bad Sex on Speed, Painkillers, I, Fatty, etc) I'm happy to see him return to his confessional stuff. Permanent Midnight made me a fan for life and OG Dad proves that he can still provide the sharp satirical commentary on his own life. Jerry Stahl is the kind of writer that makes you feel like you know him, like it's one of your old friends telling you war stories. His observations about the mundane are unmatched. If you're a father you'll appreciate this book, and if you aren't a father ( like me) you'll REALLY appreciate it because he tells you how it is. An endorsement for the pull-out method by an OG ex-junkie messiah. Reccomended.

Jerry has consistently turned out great work on the level of George Saunders and Terry Southern. These stories mix the style and humor that we love and expect from Stahl however theses stories show a newly sprouted sweetness which the author's relationship with his newborn seems to have sparked.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the bad guys REALLY get what's coming to them By SSCOTT I have read all of Mr. Allen's works over the past two years and have been impressed with the development of both his style and the characters in his novels and short stories. In this latest effort he has woven a fascinating plot that highlights both the empathy and overpowering thirst for justice of his protagonist (Montclaire). If you want a read that will leave you feeling that justice can be served in a very satisfying way, i.e. the bad guys REALLY get what's coming to them, this is the book. If this is your first E. A. Allen novel, I would encourage you to go back and read the previous short stories and novels to follow the development of the sometimes flawed Montclaire. Looking forward to more adventures with Montclaire.

"T'is", "pouring over" (reading), "Get out this instance!", and more. The book just wasn't interesting enough to make me wade through that. Also it was formatted in such a way that it was double spaced regardless of the settings on my Kindle paperwhite. Despite the author's multiple publications, this Kindle book is a mess.

While most kids are served home-cooked dinners and tucked in with bedtime stories at night, Mary Zoe never knows which version of her mother, Zodie, to expect. She might be dressed to the nines, rhapsodizing about a more luxurious way of life; or she might be strewn naked on the floor, slumped into unconsciousness by drugs and alcohol.

But either way, Mary Zoe has known from an early age that she wants a better life: freedom from the squalor, the forever-empty cupboards, and the endless parade of abusive men, tranquilizers, and booze. And when Mary Zoe’s older sister, Sissy, leaves the household, Zodie’s behavior spins even further out of control.

Coming to the painful realization that staying with her mother would mean danger, Mary Zoe crafts a plan to escape the household and leave the mother—who she loves, but who has hurt her so deeply—behind. Set in the 1960s, few people intervene to help Mary Zoe, so she learns to seek help on her own. When she is taken into foster care by a loving, stable family, she thinks her problems have finally been solved. Instead, she finds herself caught in a nightmarish court system that leaves her torn between the family she knows will love and protect her, and the damaged mother she loves but knows is certain danger.

A thrilling true story of courage and survival, Driving in the Dark documents the harrowing abuse and neglect that filled Zoe Niklas’s childhood, as well as her path to overcoming these devastating events.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Everyone should read this book!! By Linda L Schmale-Tate DRIVING IN THE DARK, by Zoe Niklas, with Janice HarperEveryone should read this book!Zoe Niklas’ Driving in the Dark is a heartfelt cry on behalf of abused and neglected children everywhere – but her story is also a strong tribute to the power of love and determination. This book, a true story, is a must-read for parents, for counseling professionals, for book clubs, for clergy, and for anyone else who has anything to do with children, or who has ever been a child. Many of us think that we have been short-changed by our parents – but most of us don’t realize how lucky we have been, and reading this story is a salutary shock. Subjected to physical abuse, neglect, and cruel criticism by her mother, a drug and alcohol addict, and sexually abused by one of a series of stepfathers, Zoe fought her way to a normal life, with the loving help of a foster family who later adopted her. Zoe’s mother, sexually abused by her own father and rejected by her mother, was unable to function or to care for her children. Yet somehow, those children struggled out from that dysfunctional family. It is a depressing story – except for the message it contains: love and determination can triumph over cruelty and abuse.Told from her own point of view as she moves from childhood into adolescence, Zoe weaves throughout the book the constant refrain of “I have to put Mama first, I have to take care of her needs.” Her book helps us remember how very captive children are to their environments, and to the adults around them. As I read, I kept thinking “Zoe!! Leave!! Get out of there!” Yet what might seem to an adult like an obvious need to escape, for a child becomes the need to transform reality, and escape from a whole pattern of thinking and self-definition. When children hear, “You are stupid, you are ugly, you are bad, you are unimportant” those messages become reality, almost impossible to escape. This book is the story of Zoe’s childhood suffering, but it is also the story of her victory in transforming her childhood self. And she has told her story with honesty, and with compassion.Toward the end of the book, having finally chosen adoption by her loving foster parents, yet still struggling to move away from her biological parents and her fears, she writes, “I knew that there were parts of Mama that I couldn’t fit into my life ever again—not her abuse, nor her lies, nor her madness. But her laughter, her humor, her life and her pain would be forever in my life and heart… The screaming in my mind had stopped. I had chosen life, my life on my terms.” So, at last, the calm and loving normality of her foster family, coupled with her own intelligence and grit, enabled her to move on.The story closes with her wedding, leading to a happy marriage, and with a tribute to her loving adoptive family, to her husband, and to the others who have helped her to tell her story. So there is a happy ending, despite the very heavy odds against it. Readers will be wise to contemplate those odds, and to think how they might move to live with the same kind of love and compassion that led one child out of a childhood hell into to a happy and productive adulthood.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Harrowing, moving and inspirational story By Richard Schwindt Reading and writing about family triggers much within us. Most people are associated with a family in some way, and a few of us are therapists and family therapists and therefore hear stories from individuals and families every day. This book was recommended to me as a scathingly honest account of one girl in the 60's growing up amidst chaos, abuse, fear and, in the end, hope. Zoe Niklas grew up with "Mama" - Zodie, her sister and a long series of "Daddy's", a few of whom were monsters. While she eventually finds herself embraced by a much better family, the story of her time with Zodie is harrowing and rings frighteningly true. I can see people looking at this book through many lenses: the life of the child of an alcoholic, mental health issues in women, trauma, the importance of the child welfare system, the effects of abuse through generations but I choose to see this as a story of resilience. We know that resilience in children emerges from two things: the child's recognition that the world around them is wrong, and the example of another adult demonstrating better ways to live. The presence of the loving Dimock family and subtle emanations of spirit in Zoe are what give this story such an inspirational quality. In the end, however what will remain with you is the complex characterization of Zodie, traumatized, victimized, destructive and self-destructive; a too vivid portrait of a human catastrophe. Always reliable writer Janice Harper helps tell the story with compassion, authority and simple readable prose. I will be recommending this book to many of my clients.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Journey Through Hell By Gordon S. Glasgow In 1970 I met a 17 year old girl on a ferry boat in Seattle. After a couple of meetings with her that seemed rather tense, her foster father explained to me that she was afraid of men (for good reason, I found out later) and I was scaring her. I backed off, gave it some time and offered to just be her friend. She somehow found the courage to accept that offer, and we have been good friends now for 45 years.Over the years she shared a few details of her early life, and I found out that she had experienced quite a lot of neglect and abuse. Now she has written a memoir about her childhood from age four up to her marriage.I had no idea how bad her life had been. This book is a story of horrendous neglect, abuse and traumatic experiences. It is truly gut-wrenching.But it is also a story of strength, determination and persistence in the face of amazing adversity. It shows how a few caring people can have a profound impact on a person's life, and that there is always hope. The revelations along the way reveal a lot about the dynamics of dysfunctional people and how there is usually a reason behind the dysfunction.I have had the honor of celebrating her triumphs and accomplishments along the way and coming to know her adoptive family and her husband. They are all remarkable people.I encourage you to read this book, but be prepared to be emotionally drained by the end.

Otherwise it's an excellent sampler of stories By Andersonh1 My only complaint with this book is that it needed more pages to fairly represent all the characters and changes that have happened in the various Green Lantern series over the years. Otherwise it's an excellent sampler of stories, starting with three Alan Scott stories from the 1940s, moving on through Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner. With the limited page count available, key moments for these characters aren't always included, but there's enough to get a good idea of what made each character different. I'd have left that last story with Simon Baz out though. He's gone nowhere, and it would have been better to include another story for John Stewart, or a modern day Alan Scott story from JSA. Still, it's a good book for the Green Lantern fan.

"Meg! whaur are ye gaein' that get, like a wull shuttle? Come in to the beuk." Meg's mother stood at the cottage door, with arms akimbo and clouded brow, calling through the boles of a little forest of fir-trees after her daughter. One would naturally presume that the phrase she employed, comparing her daughter's motions to those of a shuttle that had "gane wull," or lost its way, implied that she was watching her as she threaded her way through the trees. But although she could not see her, the fir-wood was certainly the likeliest place for her daughter to be in; and the figure she employed was not in the least inapplicable to Meg's usual mode of wandering through the trees, that operation being commonly performed in the most erratic manner possible. It was the ordinary occupation of the first hour of almost every day of Margaret's life. As soon as she woke in the morning, the fir-wood drew her towards it, and she rose and went. Through its crowd of slender pillars, she strayed hither and thither, in an aimless manner, as if resignedly haunting the neighbourhood of something she had lost, or, hopefully, that of a treasure she expected one day to find.

By A Customer David Elginbrod is a remarkable work in that it embodies the finest elements of style, characterization, plot and subplot development, and, of course, content or worth. Without appropriate content a book is a virtual wasteland after which the disillusioned reader feels as though he has sojourned in the desert, and, having encountered numerous mirages that promised but failed to provide relief, finds himself parched in spirit and soul with no oasis in sight. This book will elicit the full gamut of emotions as well as provide a welcome array of spiritual and intellectual stimuli. The main character, Hugh Sutherland, is introduced as a congenial young man who wishes no more than to make his way in the world. After the death of his father he is forced by financial constraints to seek employment in order to complete his education. This employment is, of course, as a tutor on a small Scottish estate where he encounters the estate foreman or steward, David Elginbrod and his daughter, Margaret or Maggie. Sutherland finds the Elginbrod family, although Christian in word and deed, to his liking when compared with the severe and mean manner of his employer. As a result, he finds himself at the Elginbrod cottage whenever time will permit, and begins tutoring both father and daughter. Although Hugh believes himself to be the educator, he will learn as he matures and discovers the various trials and tribulations that lie in his path that it was David, not he, who was, in fact, the real tutor. MacDonald has excelled in the characters of David and Margaret Elginbrod, while providing a practical application of their teachings in the lives of Hugh Sutherland and those with whom he comes in contact. Not only an exceptional spiritual work, David Elginbrod weaves a tale of ghosts, mysticism, the supernatural, and love in such a manner as to be both educational, spiritually-uplifting, and spellbinding. My sole regret was when I encountered the final page. I was prepared to begin anew. I invite you to join Hugh Sutherland as he learns that it is not position, education, prominence, or power that makes a man, but the willingness to serve, with joy and humility, his fellowman thereby doing his Father's will.

Goerge MacDonald is the man By A Customer With such an amazing perception of human nature (complete with lumps and hard angles we all have but many authors ignore) George makes the characters live outside of the paper it is written on. There are times when you wish to reach through the pages of the novel and shake Hugh and yell "Don't you see? Watch out for the..." Of course you feel silly talking to the book but great ones will do that to a person, and assuredly, this is a great book. Full of truth (from one who was close to it) and unique and subtle twists, George touches on so many subjects and thoughts that the Victorian era seems alive to the modern reader. Keep a notepad handy to record all the wonderfully concise quotes in this gem.

Jimmy Kudo, the son of a world-renowned mystery writer, is a high school detective who has cracked the most baffling of cases. One day while on a date with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, Jimmy observes a pair of men in black involved in some shady business. The men capture Jimmy and give him a poisonous substance to rub out their witness. But instead of killing him, it turns him into a little kid! Jimmy takes on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and continues to solve all the difficult cases that come his way. All the while, he's looking for the men in black and the mysterious organization they're with in order to find a cure for his miniature malady. Stranded in the woods, Conan and his friends take shelter at a spooky old house—only to witness a seemingly supernatural murder. The knife-wielding old lady who lives there couldn't be a witch...could she? Then Conan finds a lead in his ongoing investigation of Eisuke, Rachel's suspicious new friend. But by the time he chases it down, the source is dead and the information is missing. To get the facts, Conan has to solve the crime!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Consistent mystery entertainment By Johanna Draper Carlson Case Closed volume 56 begins with a whodunit I was immediately attracted to. A famous mystery novelist is going to be featured in a magazine piece, so he, detective Richard Moore, the interviewer, and the photographer spend the night at his house. After we observe him berating his editor over a small, obsessive point, they all retire for the night — but in the morning, the writer is found dead! The attention to detail, the publishing characters, and the classic locked-room structure all appealed to me.I was also taken with the journalists comparing notes on why they’re still using “old” technology, like a recorder that uses tape instead of operating digitally. Of course, those affectations become part of the plot. There’s a whole bunch of telling, not showing, but the expressive characters drawn by Gosho Aoyama keep the art interesting even as everyone talks through what could have happened. I wish this story could have been longer, going into more detail, although the benefit of keeping it short is that it’s only one of four mysteries in this volume. The second story starts with Conan, the kids, and the professor off on a camping trip. A flat tire in the middle of nowhere sets the stage for spookiness. A nearby house, all alone in a mountain forest, contains a scary old woman the kids think might be a witch. Then another group of campers, young adults with car trouble, arrive. In the middle of the night during a rainstorm, one of them is found murdered. Typical of the Japanese mysteries I’ve read, the clues and motive involve long memories and family ties. The third story is of much less interest to me, as it continues the never-ending saga of the men in black, the conspiracy group responsible for adult Jimmy becoming the kid Conan. I gave up on them addressing this problem until the end of the series, so more stringing it out wasn’t compelling. There is a stand-alone mystery inside the setup, though, about trying to find a particular photo in a guy’s apartment. The final short piece serves as a cautionary tale, about a scam that unfortunately occurs in real life, where an older person is called and told their grandchild is in trouble and needs money transferred immediately. I enjoy reading this series for its consistent level of escapist entertainment, but it’s quite an investment at this point. I’ve had good luck getting books from my local library; often, it doesn’t even matter what order you read them in. (The publisher provided a digital review copy. "I'd like coffee, please." "No. I don't believe you. How do I know it is really you who wants coffee and not your friend there subliminally transmitting that to you by touching your shoulder?" Imagine a world where you had to prove you knew your own mind even to get a cup of coffee, where it was generally assumed that you could have no thoughts of your own, so if you did express your thoughts, it must be some trick. What would you do? Would you give up, or demand to be heard? Sadly, this world is not imaginary for many of the writers in this book, who have chosen the path of demanding to be heard. Their best (and sometimes only) mode of communication is sometimes called "discredited" because it was "tested" in ways that make no sense. Typed Words, Loud Voices is written by a coalition of writers who type to talk and believe it is neither logical nor fair that some people should be expected to prove themselves every time they have something to say. Read our arguments and hear us. Help us change the world. "Getting your attention that I want to "voice" something is my first challenge. ... However, if you calm your leap to judge, you may find that since we know we take more effort to "listen" to, we make sure you "hear" something memorable..." - Devva Kasnitz, PhD. CUNY-Disability Studies "This groundbreaking book is a must read for anyone who truly cares about equality and it gives you a new perspective about what it means to have a 'voice'." - Matthew Wangeman, MCP. NAU - Disability Studies "Ibby, Amy, and the other authors here speak from the heart, because they live it, all day, every day. I've learned from them in ways that can't be measured over the past couple of years - their words and thinking have literally changed my life. They'll change yours, too. Read this, now." - Phil Smith, Professor, Eastern Michigan University

Invaluable book on people who type to communicate By PCDurbinWestby This amazing book is for anyone who wants to learn more and understand those of us who do not speak, have partial access to spoken language, or communicate in other nonstandard ways. There are 55 contributors. Four writers of front material and a foreword by Melanie Yergeau provide additional important ideas and information.I have an essay in the book and inadvertently left out the link that goes to a video I made when I could not speak. Since Amazon does not permit URLs, please go to YouTube and do a search on "Nonspeaking (at Times) Autistic Makes Video." That will let you view the video I discuss in the essay.

Read this if you don't believe disabled people have things to say By Kit I wrote a full review on my blog: http://kpaginatedthoughts.blogspot.com/2015/05/typed-words-loud-voices-review.htmlAnyhow, the main gist is that this book needs to be read and shared. It was written by a global autistic and disabled community. It's put together beautifully and all the words mean something, as words do. Everyone's voices mean something. The book's main goal is to correct the impression that people who use Facilitated Communication, or other types of communication, have no voices and no thoughts.I would especially recommend it if you fall into a category of not believing disabled people's experiences and words.

It would help make the Autistic Community to be better understood, and allow them to be included more By Evelyn Zuberbier This is a book that should be read by every human being. It would help make the Autistic Community to be better understood, and allow them to be included more. What a blessing the Facilitated Communication is for them, making it possible for them to communicate, be accepted and loved. They are brilliant individuals who need to express themselves. They have hopes and dreams just like the rest of us do. I hope it will be a BEST SELLER.Thank you for giving me an opportunity to express my concern for these brilliant folks. Evelyn Zuberbier

Every parent would happily give up ever scolding, punishing or threatening if she only knew how to ensure that her toddler/child/teen would thrive and act responsibly without such painful measures. Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves is the answer to this universal wish. It is not about gentle ways to control a child, but about a way of being and of understanding a child so she/he can be the best of herself, not because she fears you or seeks your approval but because she wants to, of her own free will.

Aldort's guidance takes the struggle out of parenting. The book is full of real life stories, often leaving the reader moved to tears or laughter and relieved to discover that there is a kinder way. The SALVE communication formula has been praised for providing a hybrid of The Work of Byron Katie and Nonviolent Communication. It gives parents the tools to move beyond their initial unproductive reaction, to a response that is connecting and empowering to the child and to themselves.

Review

"Chocophiles -- and others -- will find practical information amid the humor." —The Sacramento Bee “The most successful of her several books for grownups … defies genre, but on first blush one might be tempted to call it an illustrated natural, culinary, and industrial history of chocolate. What is striking about 'Chocolate,' though, is the way its seemingly unvarnished earnestness is coated in a generous robe of sardonic tastemaking.”—Ian Bogost, The New Yorker

“Sandra Boynton deserves mention alongside more frequently acclaimed masters of cross-generational entertainment, like Matt Groening and Jim Henson.”—Ian Bogost, The New Yorker

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Adorable book all about the CHOCOLATE! By Cissa I love Boynton's work, and somewhere have the original 1982 edition of this book of hers. But this one is better! She says the drawing have been redone, and the text is longer and modernized. It is still silly fun, all about chocolate, with some informative interludes.Recommended for Boynton fans, and for whimsical chocolate lovers.

Sandra Boynton manages to roll "charming," "informative," and "hysterical" into one big chocolate delight. I love how she can show so much of what her characters are thinking just by the way she draws their eyes. I don't how you learn to communicate with such simple lines, but she nails it every time.Bought one for myself and two copies as gifts. I may yet be buying more.

You will find yourself reading out loud to friends By Low Man I bought multiple copies as gifts and every copy hit the spot - kind of like chocolate hits the spot. A delightful classic perfect for people how love chocolate, which is pretty much everybody.

"Mr. Le Carre, meet Dr. Feynman! ... [T]his one really makes the earth move." ―Ursula K. Le GuinReturning to the characters and setting of his widely admired novel, BROKEN SYMMETRIES, SECRET PASSAGES is the story of a revolutionary physics experiment.SECRET PASSAGES centers on Manolis Minakis, a shepherd boy who grows up orphaned and wild on the island of Crete. But after a meeting with archaeologist John Pendlebury, who appreciates Minakis’ innate gift for mathematics, he is sent to Cambridge University. There, Minakis becomes a renowned physicist and eventually a successful industrialist, returning to Crete in retirement. Using a cache of Minoan treasures, Minakis lures photographer Anne-Marie Brand and her husband, theoretician Peter Slater, to aid in his experimental attempts to recover the past.Set against the colorful background of the island of Crete, the legendary home of a once-great civilization, earthquakes, love, loss, and the mysterious history of the physicist Minakis make this a fascinating and enthralling novel.

Secret Passages, by Paul Preuss

From Library Journal Using some of the same characters who appeared in his Broken Symmetries (LJ 10/15/83), Preuss leisurely sets the scene for a groundbreaking physics experiment by telling the life story of its inventor, the mysterious physicist Manolis Minakis, in flashbacks to 1920s-40s Crete. Preuss, who established his reputaion with hard sf but has since expanded into psychological themes, intertwines Minoan artifacts, Greek customs, and quantum physics with love, incest, secrets, and the theory that the future creates the past. The hard science (and science fiction) only sneaks into the last few chapters of this fine character- and place-driven novel. Highly recommended for both fiction and sf collections.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Physicist Peter Slater and his wife, Anne-Marie, arrive on Crete at the invitation of legendary quantum theorist Dimitris Minakis. Dimitris hopes to interest young Peter in taking up his work, which is a questioning of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, and, concurrently, a proof of reality. Preuss, author of Core (1993), is a subtle writer who handles such grand questions beautifully, but in the end, his story is about Anne-Marie's ulterior motives with regard to Dimitris and Dimitris' long recounting of his childhood on Crete, his British education, and his efforts during the war to oust the Germans. Preuss writes extremely well about war, archaeology, and even love, but his novel isn't exactly what it purports to be, unless, as it sometimes seems, his characters are working out the shifting principles of quantum mechanics through their scheming, loving, and dying. In any event, whether or not it is really science fiction, Secret Passages is a good novel by a fine writer. John Mort

From Kirkus Reviews Contemporary science fictiontinged novel featuring some of the characters from Broken Symmetries (1983), thankfully without that yarn's overwrought melodrama. Following an acrimonious divorce, Anne-Marie Brand finds that her ex, Charlie, has gained custody of their son Carlos; she has a daughter, Jenny, by her current beau, physicist Peter Slater--who's struggling to formulate a new approach to quantum theory. Anne-Marie's problem is that Carlos isn't actually Charlie's son but her brother Alain's, the result of a savage rape. A dealer in ancient artifacts, Alain agrees to admit to Carlos's paternity, but in return Anne-Marie must inquire of the Cretan archaeologist and physicist Manolis Minakis the source of his stunning collection of Minoan artifacts. Surprisingly, Manolis opens up to Anne-Marie, telling her his complicated life story, even showing her the cave where he found the artifacts. Manolis also hints to Peter that he's found a way to reverse time in a small, limited way. After Manolis dies in the earthquake that seals the cave forever, Peter uses the old man's time-reversing device to reconstruct a picture of Manolis's mother- -and finally Anne-Marie understands the full Greek tragedy of Manolis's life and why he was so willing to help her. Impressive, low-key, resonant, with a fascinating Cretan backdrop and life-sized characters: Preuss's best outing so far. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Quest for Identity in the Cretan Wilds By Diana Faillace Von Behren Troubled Anne-Marie Brand has a secret that she has held inside of herself for her entire adolescent and adult life. Now this secret may be the leverage she needs to get her son out of the legal grasp of her vindictive ex-husband. She needs only to acquire a bit of archaeological treasure to set her trap and quantum physicist Manolis Minakis seems to hold the key to the very treasure trove she seeks. There is one unknown that challenges her scheme: it seems that Manolis himself has masterminded the entire game from the very start. He has lured Anne-Marie's new husband to a symposium on quantum physics, manupulated the man whom Anne-Marie desperately needs to aid her in her quest for her son and enticed Anne-Marie herself to his homeland on Crete where he enfolds his own strange personal history. The outcome is a pleasing story of two people of different generations with the identical need to salvage the good from their past in order to face the future in a positive manner.I enjoyed this story immensely---I did not buy it because it was supposedly a Sci-Fi tale; it has little science fiction. Rather I found the characterizations and descriptions of Greek village life vivid and fulfilling, especially when set against the foil of such archaeological greats like Sir Arthur Evans and John Pendlebury.A most satisfying story!

Delaney Preuss does an excelent job developing characters, and bringing us in to the lives and history of the people of isolated island of Crete. When I started the book, I was expecting more physics. I was not prepared for the 100 page biography of Minakis, and did not enjoy the interlude as much as I would have if I was expecting it.The writing style was fantastic. I loved the characters. This book about the lives of scientists. It is a welcome relief to all the quirky sci-fi books filling the bookstore shelves. A previous reviwer made a good point labelling "Secret Passages" as fiction about science instead of science fiction. The characters and writing style are fantastic. Preuss does an excellent job weaving together anthropology, the history of Crete, philosphy and physics. On the downside, many of the transitions in the book were weak and the plot a little disjoint. This was truly a refreshing book, but I gave the book a 4 instead of a 5.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a very deep and thoughtful work on the lives of scientists. I admit, I wish I had a map of Crete at hand while reading it. I expect it would be better on the second read.

Yes, it was ostensibly about quantum physics, but that was barely a back drop for the real plot. The story was actually about one character's desperate attempt to get rid of a sordid skeleton in her closet without telling her husband about it (it read like a soap opera), but the book mostly recounted the biography of a Greek physicist. While the biography was the most interesting part of the book, the completely lame plot relating to quantum physics probably only served to allow this book to be labeled "science fiction".
