By shardinea Okay, so I'm not big on reviewing a whole series based on one volume, but this one is new so someone needs to say something. I'll just talk about first volume impressions. QQ Sweeper is kind of a light supernatural school genre story with a heavier undertone. If you've ever read Dengeki Daisy or Beast Master, it was written by the same author, which promises a good love story. It's easy to tell it's her because the leading male character has a very similar looking face to Kurosaki or Teru's old brother… Akira too at points (it also says so on the back cover :D). That said, QQ Sweeper is a very different story than either Beast Master or Dengeki Daisy. I'm not entirely sure yet, but the overall underlining plot seems to be more on the mystical end. Officially, the leading male character Q just cleans stuff at the school, but deep down he's a lot more than meets the eye. He's kind of a magical person without actually using magic (??)… It makes more sense in the manga, but hard to explain. He's one of the many protectors of a system of mystical doorways that lead to people's minds and such. He cleans out the bad and tries to protect the good both in the mental and physical plain, and the leading female character accidentally charges headlong into his world. You can imagine how that goes. Anyway, in over his head she's asked to help out. Having a strange life goal and nowhere to really go, she agrees. As far as the shojo part goes, it seems like a slower love story, much like Dengeki Daisy, so get ready for the long haul, but foreshadowing is abound. There seems to be much more there to be revealed in future volumes. I'm excited to see where this series goes, it looks promising in many ways. If you're looking for a new series to drown your post-Dengeki Daisy feels, I'd suggest picking this one up.

The premise sounded interesting but, it's always hit and miss for me with shoujo because I don't like romance. But I adored QQ Sweeper!! It's got something for everyone and Fumi is a fantastic female character. She's bold and brazen in her pursuit for a Prince Charming. She wants a handsome rich man and has no shame in saying so. She has the good-hearted, kind nature of any Disney princess. On the other hand she kicks ass, boldly goes where ever the heck she wants, bows out gently if she finds her chosen Prince Charming just isn't into her and tells it like it is: speaking the obvious truth while apologizing when necessary. Love her! This story has romance, psychology, the paranormal by way of dreams, nightmare insects, a secret mystery, cliffhanger ending and, cleverly placed within the plot handy-dandy cleaning tips! Totally awesome.

Eschewing the high tech thriller and hacking theme of that series, Motomi opts for an urban fantasy built around the use of cleaning to dispel bad spirits. Character designs are similar to Dengeki Daisy, though both protagonists are in high school.Fumi Nishioka transfers into Kurokado Private High School with a dream: the orphan whose guardians abruptly abandoned her will live a Cinderella life with the objective of a rich prince at the end. The prestigious high school is a step toward finding a wealthy boyfriend who will marry her. But first she desperately needs a job/place to live and applies for a position at a local 'haunted mansion'. Turns out, it is owned by her school's principal and inhabited by a student - the cleaning-obsessed Kyutaro Horikta - nicknamed "Q" by the principal. What Fumi quickly discovers is that dirt is a pathway for bad thoughts and bad spirits - and the mansion is a place to clean away all that filth from body and soul.As much as I loved Dengeki Daisy (even when it went on far too long), I can't say this is grabbing me as much. Motomi's humor is intact and she's created an interesting world. But honestly, the last thing I want to read about are all the various ways people clean - from how to use a rag properly to the correct proportion of cleanser to water. I'll stick with it to see where it goes but I can't say I'm loving either protagonist, either. Q is uptight and Fumi rather clueless.Enough mystery has been introduced to show that there is a lot to explore with the story - from Fumi's mysterious past to Q's own secret love whose name is so similar to Fumi's. I'm hoping this won't turn into 'monster of the week' where Q and Fumi have to save someone from their filth monsters by cleaning. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

It was a lovely morning in the first of summer. Donal Grant was descending a path on a hillside to the valley below—a sheep-track of which he knew every winding as well as any boy his half-mile to and from school. But he had never before gone down the hill with the feeling that he was not about to go up again. He was on his way to pastures very new, and in the distance only negatively inviting. But his heart was too full to be troubled—nor was his a heart to harbour a care, the next thing to an evil spirit, though not quite so bad; for one care may drive out another, while one devil is sure to bring in another.

Donal Grant, by George MacDonald

About the Author GEORGE MACDONALD (1824-1905), forerunner of the Inklings--Scottish minister, poet, novelist, and imaginative seer--was one of the most beloved Victorian authors throughout Great Britain and the U.S. in the 19th century. He wrote some 50 volumes of novels, poetry, short stories, fantasy, sermons, and essays. His influential body of work placed him alongside his eras great men of letters and his following was vast. Two decades after his death, his books were pivotal in leading C.S. Lewis to Christianity. He thus became the foundational member of Wheaton's Wade Center Seven. After his death, most of MacDonald's books eventually went out of print as his name drifted from memory. However, he continued to be revered by an impressive gallery of well-known figures, including G.K. Chesterton (who referred to him as one of the three or four greatest men of the 19th century ), W.H. Auden (calling MacDonald one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century), and Oswald Chambers ( ... how I love that man! ). In spite of such a following, however, MacDonald's reputation gradually declined throughout the 20th century. MacDonald's most notable champion of the last century was C.S. Lewis, whose journey from atheism to Christianity was sparked by George MacDonald's prophetic view of God. Lewis persistently acknowledged his debt to MacDonald, whom he called his master. Lewis wrote: "I dare not say that he is never in error; but ... I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer ... to the Spirit of Christ Himself.... I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master, indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him." Both in his autobiography and throughout his writing career, Lewis emphasized that George MacDonald was the most significant impetus in his own spiritual pilgrimage. MacDonald's writings can thus be seen as the spiritual soil out of which the faith of C.S. Lewis emerged. MacDonald's novels, fantasies, and fairy tales provide the imaginative foundation for Lewis's later writings, including the Chronicles of Narnia. In spite of his own popularity, however, the spiritual roots of Lewis' s faith remain largely unknown. Lewis's words of 65 years ago are still true today. It has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take ... sufficient notice of the affiliation [with George MacDonald]. Notwithstanding Lewis' s frequent emphasis on the Scotsman's influence in his own life, MacDonald's name in the late 20th century drifted into obscurity and his books became unavailable. A resurgence of interest in the forgotten Victorian began to mount in the 1970s and 1980s, given initial impetus by Wheaton's Wade Center and the work of two Wheaton professors, Dr. Clyde Kilby, founder of the Center, and Dr. Rolland Hein, who released several editions of MacDonald's sermon extracts. MacDonald's name then exploded into public view in the years following, largely from the efforts of MacDonald redactor and biographer Michael Phillips. Building upon the efforts of Kilby, Hein, and others, and inspired by them, Phillips's work resulted in a new generation of readers discovering anew the treasures in MacDonald's stories, and led to a renewed publication of MacDonald's books on an unprecedented scale not seen since his own lifetime. Now more than ever, thousands the world over are discovering why Madeleine L. Engle called George MacDonald the grandfather of all of us who struggle to come to terms with truth through imagination.

Be prepared, because it is some 800 pages long, but you are never disappointed either with the story line or the author's spiritual asides which read almost like a devotional. The main thrust of the story is about a young tutor named Donal Grant who leaves home after finishing college and sets out on foot to make his way in the world to a nearby coastal town in Northeastern Scotland. He meets a shoemaker who becomes his spiritual mentor, and finds employment and lodging in the nearby castle. As the story progresses we meet a reclusive, drug addicted uncle, his beautiful but spiritually dull niece, and his spoiled and brash son who is up to all kinds of naughty flirting with the shoemaker's daughter. The most appealing part of this novel is the element of the supernatural which Mr. MacDonald brings in. There are ghost noises, somnabulisms, secret rooms and passages, murder, scandal, and ghost stories and legends. Ghosts to George MacDonald represent part of the vast region of the Spirit which exists beside and beyond our own, and he never posits their accual existence. They are never a source of evil power or fear because all things exist by the power and will of God.Get this book, it is well worth the very low price. There are parts (perhaps 15%) which are written in Scotch dialect, but it makes the book that much more interesting that you have to use your brain a little to recognize what is being said.

The title character reminds me much of Curdie in MacDonald's fantasy novel, The Princess and Curdie (Princess and Curdie (George Macdonald Original Works)), which I highly recommend as well. For those having read Sir Gibbie (Sir Gibbie (George Macdonald Original Works) (George Macdonald Original Works)), Donal Grant is somewhat of a sequel; it is Grant's story, not Gibbie's, and may be enjoyed without having first read Sir Gibbie. In addition, for those who enjoy a bit of Victorian gothic literature, Donal Grant may be a good read since the setting takes place within a castle containing several, rather dark, secrets. Elements of the traditional ghost story are offered as well.Concerning the product itself, the Johannesen edition of Donal Grant would be the best copy to buy. Not only is it bound in a sturdy, green hard-back cover, but it's pages are acid-free and durable, not grainy. The font size, though a little small, is dark enough and easy to read. As well, like all of the editions printed through Johannesen, the book's title is printed in heavy gold letters on the front and spine. It is a truly beautiful book and well worth the money, not to mention that this edition is considered authoritative among literary critics. I hope that this review has been helpful for you - Happy Shopping!

Has a lot of different sermonettes that appeal to me, and truth that has satisfied me when I was searching for truth hungrily. I remember the last chapter particularly. There are some beautiful pictures in this book--I guess you could call it "mystical". In the "scary" parts, I remember Donal's courage; and I admire Donal's boldness in various situations throughout the book. Donal wasn't afraid to respectfully disagree with others on doctrine. This story is vivid in my mind and I love it!

Changing the parent-child dynamic to improve anxiety symptoms.

The topic of anxious children is on the front burner these days, both among parents and mental health professionals, and its only gaining attention as more and more clinicians are presented with anxious kids in their practices. Anxiety symptoms―whether panic, OCD, phobias, social or separation anxiety―are one of the primary reasons parents seek help from a mental health professional for their child. And yet, parents may unintentionally reward or encourage the problem through their own behavior (overprotection on the one hand, punishment on the other, or avoidance of all possible anxiety-provoking situations). This book will tackle that very issue, exploring the critical parent-child “dance” at the center of child development and uncovering how, with the proper knowledge and tools at hand, therapists can guide parents in changing their dynamic so anxious outbursts are reduced and a child’s confidence and growth are better supported. A range of techniques that therapists can teach parents will be presented, including how to “change the choreography”―the parent-child dynamic―and how to work with “goodness of fit”, or temperamental differences between a parent and a child. Parent management training and parent-child interaction training strategies will also be provided.

Working with Parents of Anxious Children: Therapeutic Strategies for Encouraging Communication, Coping & Change, by Christopher McCurry

Review “As a therapist working in an inpatient facility, I see many young clients with anxiety. I probably see it more often than any other diagnosis. . . . I know firsthand how hard it can be to explain to parents that their child’s oppositional, defiant, or moody behavior is related to anxiety. . . . McCurry helps clinicians think about how biology and environment work together to either support or work against a child with an anxiety disorder [and] facilitate greater understanding in parents, highlighting therapeutic tools the therapist can use to help educate families.” (PsychCentral)“What loving parent would not want to end the suffering of their child? Yet anxiety will run roughshod over families, taking advantage of responses that, on the surface, seem so caring. By the time they arrive in treatment, parents feel helpless and exhausted, while the worried child has become dependent on reassurance and overprotection. McCurry expertly elucidates for readers the tactics of therapeutic change that will stabilize the family system, empower the parents, and foster resilience in the child.” (Reid Wilson, PhD, co-author Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: Seven Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children)“Work with parents of anxious children is becoming richer and more nuanced as practitioners used to doing parent training, communication skills work, and traditional cognitive behavior therapy begin to use acceptance and mindfulness-based therapies as well. This wise and well-written volume will help provide that sense of nuance and balance. It is not a treatment protocol, nor is it dedicated to any one approach; it is a guidebook, helping you to use your existing skills in more sophisticated ways and to learn new skills and approaches without having to abandon what you already know. Highly recommended.” (Steven C. Hayes, PhD, Co-developer of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and author of Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life)“This book is an incredibly valuable resource for every clinician working with anxious children and their parents. McCurry expertly integrates evocative clinical vignettes with a sophisticated, yet easily understood, biopsychosocial model. He explains the negative parent-child interactions so common in the families of anxious youth and provides an elegant and effective therapeutic approach for enhancing family communication and resolving conflict. Drawing from the cognitive-behavioral, functional analytic, acceptance, and mindfulness literatures, this book provides clear guidance and an abundance of clinical "pearls" for teaching parents how to create a healthy and resilient home environment.” (John Piacentini, PhD, ABPP, President, Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director, Child OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program, UCLA Semel Institute)

About the Author Christopher McCurry, Ph.D. is a father, husband, and a clinical child psychologist in private practice in Seattle, Washington, where he specializes in the assessment and treatment of childhood anxiety, with an emphasis on parent-child interactions. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington. By Kent Kodalen I first met Chris McCurry in 2014 following his presentation on applying ACT techniques with anxious children. At the time I mentioned my desire for a resource on how to extend these powerful techniques towards working with parents & guardians. Little did I know he was already putting together “Working with Parents of Anxious Children,” but I’m very happy to report - he absolutely delivered. I have found this book extremely helpful in my day to day work, both as a clinician (pediatric psychologist) and as a supervisor of trainees, and can't recommend it highly enough. This book is a welcome addition to the toolbox of ANY mental health provider who works with children and parents. Equally valuable for students and experienced clinicians, Chris’ book provides a how-to manual for those of us on the front lines who understand that any intervention you provide is only as good as the support it receives once that family leaves your office. He provides practical strategies for enlisting parents’ support, for re-framing the child’s experience in accessible, jargon-free, real-world terms, and most importantly, a road-map for helping parents recognize their own role in the “anxiety dance” so they can adjust their responses to “change the choreography.”One of Chris’ strengths is his ability to provide comprehensive content in an easily digestible form, all while maintaining a pragmatic focus. He summarizes important theory, gives credit where credit is due, and then outlines how one can use this knowledge in session. This is especially evident in the chapter “Helping Parents Develop Effective Communication Skills” where he offers specific guidelines for talking with parents to help them observe, reflect, and respond to their child (and each other) in order to facilitate positive change. One final note – although anxiety is the primary focus here, be aware these techniques/strategies are universal. As such, the information contained here is highly applicable to a wide variety of cases across any number of different mental health settings. For instance, I could see how therapists who have no contact with children would still find this book valuable in guiding their work with adult clients struggling with parenting-related issues.

Turrell This latest book by Chris McCurry deserves a special place on every clinician's bookshelf! He has done a spectacular job of describing the 'dance' that develops between parents and their anxious child through his easy to read, comprehensive, transdiagnostic approach. Chris uses illustrative vignettes to walk us through through the processes of assessment, case conceptualization, parent 'buy in' and treatment. He has expertly weaved together traditional cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and mindfulness practices, communication skills training, and conflict resolution. Samples of in-session transcripts and experiential exercises enhance the readers' ability to engage parents in such a way as to increase parental awareness and acceptance of both their child's contribution to the 'dance' and their own. "Working with parents of anxious children" gives us a true gift for healing families within a context of empowerment and resilience.

Myth and legend. Historical fantasy. Literature. Horror. Demonology and Satanism. Urban fantasy. Damned souls wail as plagues wreak havoc, doctors up their fees, snake-oil salesmen make a killing, and Satan turns his hit-man loose. Be there when Erra, the Babylonian plague god, and his seven personified weapons, spread terror throughout the underverse! Victor Frankenstein and Quasimodo develop a vaccine -- with diabolical results... Satan looses Daemon Grim, the Devil's personal hit man, and damned souls cower... Bat Masterson finds himself caught between plague victims and Wyatt Earp... Judas learns you can't teach an old dog new sins... Calamity Jane and her Sinchester carbine defend hell's last uninfected outpost... Nietzsche and Lilith, Adam's first wife, face the Beast and come to fiendish accord... Doc Holliday tries one last gambit, and unleashes all hell's fury... And there's worse to come, even an excerpt from bestselling author Andrew P. Weston's forthcoming Heroes in Hell novel! If you think life is tough, try the afterlife, where the doctor is always wrong, sinners never win, misery runs amok, and all hell's damned get their just deserts -- eternally.

Review Fanboy Comics: Hell Bound is a vividly wrought story of evil at its best...the story was compelling and a fascinating venture into the world of unsequestered villainy. Weston's novel is highly inventive and enthralling. It's a mob drama with a taste of the supernatural.

About the Author Chris Morris is a music journalist and disc jockey. He was music editor of the Hollywood Reporter (2004–2007) and senior writer for Billboard (1986–2004). By J&R Michaels Doctors in Hell, edited by Janet Morris is the newest in an award winning and best -selling series, each volume of which stands alone. I know this because I've had a great time reading Doctors in Hell, a satirical, dark group of stories in chronological order written by a team of excellent writers. In the first story, Hell's only volunteer angel makes a bet with the devil. In another story, Satan gives a task to John Milton, author of Paradise Lost. In the third story, we meet The Grim Reaper and Jack the Ripper.Sometimes dark, often savagely satirical, often lyrical and literary, this "shared universe" takes you through a hell revenged by plagues and magic. Where else but Hell could you find Bat Masterson and William Shakespeare?Buy Doctors in Hell and you will see, as I did, that everybody who's ever been anybody ends up there - - - with mind bending results. Doctors in Hell is most definitely the right prescription for whatever ails you.

By Peru Editor In this, the latest in the long running "Hell" series from Janet Morris, you are treated to a variety of wonderful tales of torment featuring some of history's most nefarious characters. However, this novel isn't just a gore fest (although of that there is plenty), but a meditation on torment and the human condition. All of the contributing authors take the time to provide nuggets of wisdom as well as social commentary in their efforts. It's also entertaining how this series of stories created by separate individuals also seems to have a arcing theme which provides a serendipitous level of meaning to the whole collection. This is a book that you'll be reading again and again. The Wager by Janet and Chris Morris--This is a delightfully scathing criticism of modern warfare written in a Homeric style that only underscores the lack of honor and softness of the modern battle monger. The image of privileged, arrogant souls willfully driving themselves to ruin as a result of their own hubris and blindness is almost as heartbreaking as it is mildly amusing. The tone of this story is especially artful as it could have drifted easily into satire and become a mockery of the very point it was trying to make. Too heavy handed and the audience would drift away, but too light and the message is lost. Janet and Chris Morris do a wonderful job of navigating these opposing forces and the result is entertainment that packs a thoughtful punch. The Cure by Chris Morris is so wide sweeping and boldly lyrical that it must be read aloud to be truly appreciated. I enjoyed the images of the struggling poets Milton, Shakespeare and Marlowe as they wrestled with the prospect of oblivion, all under the ominous, ever present shadow of Satan spreading his demonic wings. Satan offers nothing more than the illusion of salvation, delighting as the hungry souls lurch for the false reward even while fundamentally understanding they're doomed to suffer another trick. Satan is again set at a perfect note in this tale, declarative of how the human weakness will manifest, confident and secure, yet mysterious, at least, until the whole tale is completed.Grim by Andrew P. Weston--With a story like Grim it's easy to see why Andrew P. Weston is one of the fastest rising authors in the Perseid stable. A first person account of an errand of the grim reaper himself, Grim is a fast paced noir effort that reminded me of the Clyde section in "Sin City." Weston does an excellent job maintaining the forward action while filling in the back story. This is a very satisfying tale that leaves you wanting more. The Right Man for the Job by Deborah Koren is a story about the continuing adventures of Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp in Hell. A new plague in hell sets the stage for a thoughtful meditation on the concept of torment. In this case, that torment is felt by a doctor who kills everyone he attempts to cure. The Bat Masterson/Wyatt Earp tale felt like a continuation from the story within the last Hell volume, and it's nice to see these chapters line up as a kind of book within a series. In Memory by Nancy Asire a host of rodents has brought plague to Hellview estates, home of Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, Atilla the Hun, and others. When plague threatens to take the life of Napoleons consort Marie, only the unexpected arrival of field medic Dominique-Jean Larrey can provide a spark of hope. What Price Oblivion? by R. E. Hinkle begins with a brutal murder and continues to escalate in pace and tension. When Charles Baggs suffers a fleeting moment of pity, he can expect to be dealt with harshly in Hell. There is quite a bit of nuance in this well-crafted tale that ends on a cruel punishment that comes in the form of an unexpected regeneration by the infamous Undertaker. In the Shadowlands by Dr. Richard Groller. This is a complex tale that finds Zeno and Edison working on a time-perterbation detection network to probe the nature of infinity in Hell. Houdini also makes an appearance, even taking the time to perform a bit of slight of hand with the ferryman of Charon himself.Let Us Kill the Spirit of Gravity by Matthew Kirshenblatt. Nietsche works up enough courage to go and visit Lilith for some carnal reprieve, but gets more than he bargains for when he utters a name that penetrates to a soft spot on the queen of the demonesses. Before the story is over, a hydra will be called upon and Nietsche will be tamed.Pavlovian Slip by Bill Snider. Pavlov and Freud have a series of dialogues while intermittently pausing to watch Pavlov's trained house zombie devour unwanted guests. This tale is especially satisfying, and Pavlov is gifted a great closing line.Hell on a Technicality by Joe Bonadonna shows Victor Frankenstein's brain residing in the body of the monster he created. Likewise the brain of the monster, Adam, resides in Victor's human body. As Frankenstein lances boils on the face of Chicago gangster Johnny Fortune, the two damned souls muse on whether or not the man-made monster, Adam, is in hell by mistake. Other historical figures get involved in the question such as Quasimodo and Aristotle who debate whether the soul resides in the head or the heart.Convalescence by Michael H. Hanson features Calamity Jane in a retirement home populated by damned souls that tormented the elderly. Plague abounds, and catches up with Jane in the end.Hell Noon by Paul Freeman features Doc Holiday and once again Calamity Jane. They are stuck in a gambler's hell at a table that also features Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Doc is cursed by the fact that he always wins, which steals the danger of gambling and the joy of victory. However, in Doc's final gambit of the tale, the odds come crashing down. The Judas Book by Jack William Finley features Frank Nitti and Elliot Ness. The two of them go to visit Dr. Walter Freeman, a lobotomist with spikes protruding from his eyes. Freeman has a plan for escaping Hell based on the belief that damned souls only endure torment because they themselves believe they deserve it. The escape plan, however, turns out to be the greatest of deceptions, with Judas himself as an overseer.Writer's Block by Janet and Chris Morris features Shakespeare and Marlowe sharing a moment of clarity in the eternal battle against Satan. Shakespeare's power is such that he is afforded a certain relative comfort in damnation, and this story ends on a hopeful note that is a fitting finale to this collection. Also included is an excerpt from Andrew P. Weston's upcoming novel.Doctor's in Hell is a tremendous collection of tales that will horrify, delight, and make you pause and reflect. You might even discover some writers whose other works you will wish to explore. Highly recommended.

Doctors in Hell– A honed recipe of Human Habits and Myths with a Theme By S E Lindberg Doctors in Hell is the 18th in a long running Heroes in Hell series, each installment being a different theme. “Doctors” has 14 short stories plus an excerpt (a sequel of sorts to one entry, and a prelude to a novel). First-time hell readers can feel comfortable jumping into Doctors, since it works as a stand-alone book as well a series entry. Beware, hell is a seductive force and the book a gateway (this was my first full adventure but now I have committed myself to more since I have now bought five previous installments). Here are basic expectations of the series from my fresh perspective:(1) Human Behavior persists: The dead do not need sustenance nor drink, and all the food tastes bad (i.e. like vomit), but inhabitants habitually eat/drink anyway despite the displeasure. “Real people” copy their initial lives in hell.(2) Our gods and hell exist: Various gods from history battle to maintain some ideal flux/condition of souls; in “Doctors” the Akkadian plague god has descended from heaven to ensure hell is sufficiently undesirable, casting additional illnesses upon the dead … and messing with Satan’s control of hell.Part of hell’s nature ensured that it metamorphosed to suit those it incarcerated. All societies created the hell they deserved, if left to their own devices. And the devil moderated the creation of the New Dead’s societies, so that no one group took power, intent on preserving the balance that made the underverse an equally uneasy resting place for history’s manifold modern damned. – from THE WAGER by J. Morris and C. Morris(3) Unbounded Time: Time is nonlinear and infinite, so individuals from various centuries are often paired or pitted against one another. Where else can Attila the Hun and Napoleon Bonaparte join forces against armies of rats and Vietcong?(4) Resurrections: If one dies again in hell, then an entity called the Undertaker will resurrect the individual and “reassign” it to another life – so “death” is not a way out, and the process is painful.“He’s still there. What’s wrong with Reassignments? He should have disappeared by now.” “Maybe they’re overwhelmed,” Wellington offered. “So many deaths. Even the Undertaker must be up to his malformed eyebrows in bodies.” –from MEMORY by N. Asire“I do not understand. These men are dead! They should be on the Undertaker’s slab waiting for recycling,” from HELL NOON by P.Freeman(5) Titular theme: Each book has a theme as per the title that focuses each anthology and makes them stand alone; however story arcs and characters do carry from volume to volume, so the more one reads the more one enjoys.(6) Varied content: Each author demonstrates freedom to explore the titular theme, with their own style and genre. This collection has classic myths, western shoot outs, zombie apocalypse, comedy, a military sortie, and police drama… and somehow all the mix feels very consistent.Five Highlights: I enjoyed the whole set, but in particular the five resonated with me, seemed more stand alone or tailored to a new-HIH reader, demonstrated hell’s operation explicitly, and fully embraced the “doctors” theme. The Wager by Janet E. Morris and Christopher Morris (heroic myth): The initial story sets the stage for the book, economically capturing the tone of previous stories, the purpose of this tome, and the delivering an entertaining tale of Satan and the angel Altos. The Morris’s have a knack for writing heroic fantasy, and true to form, they deliver again. This made me feel guilty about being an armchair, video-game general. What Price Oblivion by Robert Hinkle (horror) : Con-man Charles Braggs (known as Doc in life since he had a skill of ‘skinning suckers’ was as sharp as any surgeon’s) gets his murderous due. Without spoiling, I’ll highlight a line that I cannot get out of my head: “Why do you keep doing this to me?” This story showed the Undertaker’s role vividly.Pavlovian Slip by Bill Snider (comedy): Utterly hilarious depiction of psychologists Ivan Pavlov and Sigmund Freud, struggling to reason why humans have habitual behavior and the consequences for that in hell. The philosophical undertones strengthen the commentary greatly. Saturated with dark humor.Hell on a technicality by Joe Bonadonna (comedy): Ah, another hilarious blend: this time a death panel (inducing Aristotle and Da Vinci) convenes to discuss the nature of the soul and body in the preposterous case of Doctor Victor Frankenstein, who has had his brain switched with his creature Adam’s. So now Victor’s mind finds itself in his creation’s body… and vice versa. How else better to discuss the nature of a soul in hell then to work out this mess. The death panel erupts into an outrageous furor.Convalescence by Michael Hansen (zombie horror) : This reads as a homage to Edgar Allen Poe’s Masque of the Red Death, one of my favorites. Here we have Calamity Jane as a nurse in one of hell’s retirement homes. A zombie horde surrounds the home while a “Strawberry Ball” masquerade event is held. The colored rooms, impending doom, and costumes are very Red Death-like; of course, Poe’s Mask of the Red Death involved a cureless plague and the inevitability of death to good measure, so echoing in “Doctors” is perfect.Other Grim Stories: The other stories are all worthy in their own right, some catering to readers of previous books like Poets in Hell and Lawyers in Hell (Memory, In The Shadowlands, The Cure & Writer’s Block, and Let Us Kill The Spirit of Gravity), there are two western motifs (The Right Man for the Job, and Hell Noon), and a 1920’s pairing of Elliot Ness versus lobotomist Walter Jackson Freeman II (The Judas Book). Last of note, there is “Grim” who’s character is a genuine reaper allowed to leave hell on a sortie to retrieve an escapee early in the collection; the last entry “A Moment of Clarity” in an excerpt from the forthcoming Heroes in Hell novel called “Hell Bound” – this excerpt extends the initial story and prepares the reader for more in a dedicated novel.Highly recommended for readers of dark, historic, or heroic fantasy.Contents:THE WAGER - Janet E. This author has a unique take on life and tells her stories in such a fun, unpretentious way. Parents, grandparents and the rest of us "emptynexters," as she calls us, will find themselves belly giggling over some of the all-too-familar experiences that being on this planet over half a century will inevitably bring to you. She has a blog with the same flavor and , ahem, then some. I have to admit I took pleasure in knowing I wasn't the only one who loved to embarrass their kids at the most inopportune times. Good schtick!

I had to skip a lot of parts in the book because it was too many sex scenes and not enough dialogue. This series has ran its course, I hope the next book will be an ending to this series.

Review

“Robert Boenig's meticulously edited, beautifully annotated edition of William Morris’s late prose romance, The Wood Beyond the World, will satisfy any teacher or reader wanting to learn more about Morris’s preoccupations at the end of his life. Boenig’s introduction alone makes the edition necessary reading. The supplementary materials, ranging from Morris’s work on a translation of Beowulf to his essay on ‘The Socialist Ideal: Art,’ and works by contemporaries such as Marx, Ruskin, and Mallock, expand richly the ways in which this edition may be used.” ― Barry Qualls, Rutgers University

“The first new scholarly edition in thirty years, and an admirable achievement.” ― Robert Clark, University of East Anglia

From the Back Cover

A groundbreaking fantasy novel, The Wood Beyond the World tells the story of a young man, Golden Walter, who finds himself in a strange and frightening world after being abandoned by his wife and lost at sea. The novel takes the form of Walter’s quest for the visionary Maid that he sees at the beginning of his journey, and takes him from his failed marriage through temptation to emotional fulfillment. Set in Morris’s imaginative recreation of a medieval world, the novel is full of vivid imagery and surprising emotional realism.

This edition collates for the first time the three early texts of the work. The introduction discusses the place of the book among Morris’s other prose romances, the events of his life, and his activities as a visual artist and a socialist. The appendices provide excerpts from Morris’s translation of Beowulf, other medieval texts read by Morris, and writings by his contemporaries on politics and aesthetics.

About the Author William Morris (1834--1896) was a poet, novelist, and socialist, but he is best remembered today for his design work, which included fabrics, household objects, and books. Morris had a life-long interest in the Middle Ages.

37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. wonderful and unusual reading experience By Orrin C. Judd The book you hold in your hands is the first great fantasy novel ever written: the first of them all; all the others. Dunsany, Eddison, Pratt, Tolkein, Peake, Howard, et al., are successors to this great original. By fantasy, I mean the tale of quest, adventure or war set in an invented age and worldscape of the author's own imagination. -Lin Carter (Introduction to The Wood Beyond the World)I like the definition of fantasy that Carter provides there and William Morris is certainly an early practitioner of the genre, but I think you've got to give pride of place to George MacDonald [see Orrin's review of The Princess and the Goblin (1872) (George MacDonald 1824-1902) (Grade: A)]At any rate, William Morris is one of the more interesting and influential characters of Victorian England. Repelled by the changes that the Industrial Revolution had brought to Britain, he yearned for more pastoral times. By profession a Medievalist, he translated Norse sagas and printed them in beautiful editions. An artist and founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he designed many of the flowery tapestries and wallpapers that we associate with the Victorian drawing room. Politically he was a utopian Socialist. And, as Carter says, as a writer he helped to create the fantasy novel. In all of these pursuits he harkened back to an idealized past, no where more so than in his writing. The language, style and story of this novel lend it an aura of antiquity, as if it too was merely a translation of some medieval romance. The hero of the story, Golden Walter, flees his home upon realizing that his new bride hates him. Sailing forth on one of his merchant father's ships, his fate becomes intertwined with a mysterious trio: a splendid lady, her evil dwarf servant and a young maiden whom the lady has enslaved. Walter pursues the trio beyond the reaches of his own world to The Golden House, governed by the lady, known only as The Mistress. There he will battle the dwarf, free the maiden, with whom he has fallen in love, and together they will flee the Mistress.Though Morris may have intended to recall a lost past, he truly does create a unique world of his own. It is a world in which the reader can lose himself for hours and it makes for a wonderful and unusual reading experience.GRADE: B+

26 of 27 people found the following review helpful. A Quaint Fairy Tale By Jisetsu The Wood Beyond the Worldby William MorrisThis book will appeal to readers who are interested in the origins of modern fantasy. William Morris is cited by scholars as an influence on 20th century writers who gave birth to the genre, and The Wood Beyond the World is a readily available example of his work (and also considerably shorter than his Well at the World's End).Simply put, the book is a romance, nay, a fairy tale of 260 pages. The 21st century reader had best be prepared for very light fare. None of the complexities that the modern reader has become accustomed to in fantasy are present, whether of plot, character, or setting.Morris writes in an archaic form of English that is remniscient of that used by the American Howard Pyle (Story of King Arthur and his Knights, etc.) The language is not particularly hard to read, and while it does not stir the emotions the way, say, the neo-Elizabethan prose of E. R. Eddison does, neither does it seem awkward or detract from the reader's enjoyment of the story. It is easy to see Morris's influence in the work of a writer like Lord Dunsany, whose King of Elfland's Daughter displays modern twists on some of the themes present in Wood Beyond the World.Be certain to read this book in the Dover facsimile of the original Kelmscott Press Edition. A lot of the charm of the book is in the book itself: the typeface, the decorative artwork and illustrations.

Curious as to the validity of this statement, I searched and found The Wood Beyond the World in a low-cost anthology I had in my library. Much to my delight as I read the novel, I found that this fantasy of visions, quests and magic could have been plotted today. But the prose style itself is so beautiful, so archaic that I wonder if anyone living today could have given it the tone of Pre-Raphaelite Morris. It contributes greatly to the reader's immersion in Morris' created world. The basic story is one of a prince wanderer who leaves his father's kingdom, is besieged by visions of a mysterious young woman who is in terrible danger. The young woman turns out to be a real person shortly into the book. The core of the story becomes the wanderer's efforts to save her as they fall deeply in love.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not bad, but forgettable By Mylissa's Reviews and Book Thoughts I received a free copy in return for an honest review.Overall I would say this was an OK read, one I read through to finish, and would not go back and reread.Storm is an independent, strong-willed young woman, out to make her ranch succeed. Dak is a somewhat lonely widower, with a few presumptuous prejudices of Storm.Together they find love, and face the hardships they have going on in life.I found this book a little hard at times. Storm is often too independent, and pushes Dak away. It is addressed in the book why she acts this way, but I found it getting on my nerves more than once, and made me have to push through more than once. A good book needs to suck you in from the get go, and this book just did not do that for me. It lacked a little for me in some parts, than in other parts I felt it had great potential. I found myself not lost in the real feel and emotion of their story, and that just made it an OK read, and quite forgettable for me.Also the chapters switched from Storm's POV to the 3rd person narrative, which I found to be very annoying at times. I find it so much more logical to pick a narrative form and stick to it instead of changing it so often. One thing I did really enjoy in this book was the character Boots. He to me seemed very well developed and added a great deal of warmth and depth to the story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun Afternoon Read By Julie Coulter Bellon In this book we meet Storm, a woman who is trying to run a ranch with her Uncle Boots. (I have no idea why they call him Boots, but every time I read it, it reminded me a bit of the sidekick named Boots on the children's show Dora. But the character of Uncle Boots was really well-written in the book. I loved how warm he was and sweet.)Unfortunately for Uncle Boots and Storm, some of their cattle have been stolen and their part-time ranch hand has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Not to mention, the ranch payment is due, but without those cattle to sell, they're up a creek. I have to say the author really shines in the setting department. I enjoyed how realistic the ranch and surrounding area was, and it was easy to lose myself in the descriptions and how real Storm's concerns were as she worked to save the only place that ever felt like home to her.The story goes on to introduce us to our hero, Dak. (I'm sorry, but I didn't like his name at all. It's never explained why he would have such an odd name and every time I read it, it made me think of that gooey substance Gak that my kids have.) Anyway, Dak is a fairly judgmental jerk in the beginning and makes some assumptions about Storm, which would be bad enough, but he tries to tell their pastor she doesn't deserve to teach Sunday School either. I had such a hard time getting over the fact that he jumped to such a huge conclusion, didn't ask Storm about it, and then decided to try to ruin her teaching job behind her back. Storm forgives him pretty easily, but I hated how underhanded and sneaky that felt and it took me quite a while to warm up to him as a hero after that. They do have some good moments as a couple, (the cave scenes come to mind which were really sweet!) and he does do some heroic things that justify him being the hero later on, but it's a journey, that's for sure. He does have a point in his favor, though, because Uncle Boots likes him.But the best part of the whole book was the suspense as Storm tries to unravel who killed her part-time ranch hand, Connor. There are great clues and some twists and turns that were really good. While I was able to figure out who the bad guy was pretty quickly, I thought the author had some very tense scenes as our heroine gets herself in over her head trying to solve the mystery. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book and thought it was well-written.So, for me, Storm had a great setting, a strong heroine, and a twisty turny mystery which made this book a fun afternoon read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for Searchers of Contemporary Western By Megan Ledbetter *3.5 Stars*This was an easy, enjoyable, quick read. Although it's the second in a series and I haven't read the first one, it seems to be more of a companion novel so it's not necessary to read the first to understand what's going on, although I'm sure it makes it more enjoyable. The characters were interesting. Not my favorite by any means but they weren't annoying characters to read about. The main character, Storm, is just too hardheaded for me to like and Dak's way of jumping to conclusions and running with them put me off of him from the beginning. They got better as the story ran its course but I wouldn't want to read any more about them. The plot ran okay. The beginning was slow and a bit awkward with what Storm goes through and Dak's aforementioned jumping to conclusions. I wasn't sure what the main conflict in the story was going to be since it jumped around a bit. The action at the end was pretty interesting; however I feel that the more sinister elements in the book were very obvious and not difficult to figure out at all. I liked the ending, especially because of the way the characters grow.Likes: Easy, quick read. Perfect for people who like a contemporary western.Dislikes: Some grammar and spelling errors. The sinister elements were easy to figure out. I didn't like the characters much personally.Overall:Recommend? Yes if you're looking for a contemporary western. Otherwise you could skip this.*I received this e-book for free in exchange for an honest review*
