One of MAD's original "Usual Gang of Idiots," Bill Elder may have been MAD's most versatile artist, able to mimic any other artist's style while still retaining his own "chicken fat" approach to cartooning. This new title collects all his work from the original 23 issues of the MAD comic book, all written by Harvey Kurtzman, including hilarious takes on Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Wonder Woman, Archie Comics, Popeye, Mickey Mouse, the Shadow, Dragnet and much more. Collects stories from MAD #1-23.

The MAD Art of Will Elder: The Complete Collection of His Work from MAD Comics #1-23, by Will Elder

About the Author Born in New York City in 1921, Will Elder was by all reports a compulsive doodler, covering the walls, windows and ceilings of his parents' apartment with drawings by the age of three. After graduating from New York's High School of Music and Art and studying at the Academy of Design, Elder began his professional comics work in 1946. By 1950, he had joined Harvey Kurtzman at E.C., working on such titles as TWO-FISTED TALES, FRONTLINE COMBAT and WEIRD FANTASY. But it wasn't until the debut of MAD that Elder's genius began to show. From the very first issue, his unmistakable style -- which filled panels to overflowing with sight gags and one-liners -- set the standard for MAD's cluttered and frenzied comedy.    When Kurtzman left E.C., Elder went with him and continued their partnership through the regrettably brief runs of Trump, Humbug, and Help!. Then, in 1962, Elder and Kurtzman began their longest and most labor-intensive collaboration -- a fully painted strip for Playboy entitled Little Annie Fanny. The first such strip to be printed in full-process color, Little Annie Fanny required months of work for each episode, and eventually occupied Elder (and several other contributing artists) full time for 20 years. Following a brief reunion with Kurtzman for MAD in the mid-1980s, Elder retired from professional cartooning in 1988. In 2003 he was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame, the same year that Fantagraphics Books published the career retrospective Will Elder: The Mad Playboy of Art. Elder passed away on May 14th, 2008.

I'm MAD over these MAD reprints By Jerry This is a great collection at a great price. 199 Pages of Elder and Kurtzman stories and art, printed comic size in full color on a matt white (not too bright) paper. It has the feeling of picking up a new copy at the newsstand 60 years ago. There's at least one story from each of the first 22 issues (with nothing from issue 23). These are the stories that made MAD the phenomenon it became. I bought all 3 volumes separately (Will Elder, Wally Wood and Jack Davis), to save the extra $ for the slipcase. I already have the large hardcover Russ Cochran reprints in color and B&W (and I used to own some of the original artwork). This is a great addition. I highly recommend this whether you're familiar with these stories, as an introduction to the early Mad comic, or if you're a current Mad reader wondering how it all began. You can't go wrong with these. Great stuff!

Still Biting Satire By James Elfers Before Senate hearings, "The Seduction Of The Innocent" and the arrival of the Comic Book Code that killed every other EC Comics publication, "Mad" was a comic book that satirized OTHER comic books. For the first 23 issues of "Mad", "The usual Gang of idiots" worked in full color. Will Elder was known as "Chicken Fat" because he filled virtually ever square inch of his panels with jokes, puns and bon mots. Some of the references are dated. The modern generation of readers may not know who "The Shadow" and Margo Lane are, and Mandrake the Magician (Manduck here) is nowhere near as popular as he was in the 1950's. On the other hand the "Wonder Woman" parody (Here Woman Wonder) is still biting and fresh, bringing in issues such a femininity, the role of women, and the constricting conformity of the 1950's all in the final panel of an eight page comic strip! If you are a fan of Mad Magazine and grew up reading it, you may have encountered this material before. I remember reading some of these stories in various reprint paperbacks in the 1970's HOWEVER, here they are reprinted in the glorious full color as they were meant to be. Foe me it was very much like seeing these stories for the very fist time. This wonderful reprint also bears a price that can not be beaten. You won't be disappointed

Autism is epidemic! In 2015 the Centers for Disease Control reported that 1 in 45 children is identified with autism spectrum disorder. Yet, the phrase Autism Spectrum Disorder is simply a label, the underlying causes of the symptoms are rarely diagnosed. Conventional doctors are unable to help because they are restricted by the guidelines of the American Medical Association. So what is a parent to do? Beating Autism is the personal story of Anne Evans's struggle to find answers to the cause and cure of her daughter's condition. Evans left the world of conventional medicine and found not only the source of her daughter's autism, but clear steps to her complete healing, alternative medicine, allergy elimination and Field Control Therapy. She found a combination therapy which brought about a complete reversal of symptoms and healed her daughter without the use of expensive equipment, pharmaceuticals, or surgery. From that moment on, the Evans family used diet, and Integrated Chinese Medicine (ICM) and Field Control Therapy to diagnose the condition of Sarah's brain tissue, analyze her dietary needs, detoxify her organs, and boost and redirect her own immune system to fight off invading pathogens without the use of antibiotics or psychotic drugs. Their daughter showed improvement immediately and recovered completely.  Beating Autism is the compelling and true story of the Evans's 3-year struggle battling and overcoming autism. It is a case study that includes full explanations of the weekly drug-free treatments, details of the side effects and their durations, and a complete list of materials, metabolic and psychological tests, laboratories, and clinicians used. For the past 15 years the Evans' daughter has been fully functional with no signs of the disorder. Find out how you can get your child on a path to recovery and beat autism too.

I am a professional wellness coach and for years I believed that autism was a genetic illness that could not be cured. Then I met Anne and Sarah Evans and Dr. Ross Stark and learned the story of Sarah’s incredible recovery from this debilitating illness and that autism is actually an environmental illness that can be cured. In clear, understandable language, Anne documents her daughter Sarah’s incredible journey of recovery from autism through the miracle of scalar energy medicine. The key to this healing modality is in its ability to treat each person in a unique way, because even though individuals may be categorized with the same illness, the underlying causes and the symptom profiles may be very different. Scalar energy medicine allows the practitioner to use a completely non-invasive, personalized approach to healing…it is the new frontier in medicine.

When I was young and, unfortunately, somewhat closed-minded, I would have scoffed at the idea of energy medicine. Thankfully, I have matured, and now I wonder how many diseases could be cured if we didn't place our faith in western medicine and its usage of over-prescribed medications each with a lengthy list of horrific side effects. Anne is a warm and loving mother who spent countless hours helping her young daughter to be diagnosed and cured as well as educated. Thank God that Anne did not listen to the physicians who thought that Sarah could not be healed and forever would live a life of pain, hives, tantrums, dyslexia, fevers, noise sensitivity, infections, hallucinations, and parasites. It is my hope that every parent who has a child diagnosed on the autism spectrum has access to a copy of Autism Treated and Cured. If your budget does not allow for this additional purchase, visit your local public library to see if it is on their shelves. If it isn't owned by the library, ask if they will consider adding the book to their collection. This is a book of love, loyalty, and hope. Sarah, the little girl who doctors said would never be able to live independently, is now beginning her education in traditional Chinese medicine with a fierce determination to heal other children.

Becker, PhDon November 13, 2014Format: PaperbackI learned about this book from the Nov-Dec issue of The Alcalde, The University of Texas Ex-Students magazine. I have worked with some of the world's greatest savant artists with autism for almost 40 years and produced the international, award-winning documentary film, WITH EYES WIDE OPEN: Richard Wawro, Artist. As an educator/aqueduct I have shared information on autism and nutrition with parents, grandparents, doctors, psychologists, educators for many years. I was eager to purchase this book and add it to my list of Books and Films on Autism and Education that I share. I personally know a number of parents who have brought their children back for "Autism Island." Two recent examples are Rhonda Spellman, THE JOURNEY HOME FROM AUTISM, and Marcia Hinds, I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE: WINNING OUR WAR AGAINST AUTISM. These are merely two of several books by mothers who have brought their children back for solitary confinement on Autism Island. They are excellent road maps describing the journey by mothers who did not accept the "death sentence" delivered by professionals when their children were diagnosed with autism. Each did not give up hope that they could find a way to bring their children back. They have succeeded. As the late Dr. Bernard Rimland, founder of the Autism Research Institute, said, "The major research in autism has not been done by men in white lab coats, but by mothers." Anne M. Evans has joined this distinguished group of women, and BEATING AUTISM:How Alternative Medicine Cured My Child in my opinion provides a major paradigm shift in the study of the causes and cure of autism. Thank you.Laurence A. Becker, PhD

Young women long for relational connection with women further ahead of them on the journey. Yet, without realizing it, many of us tend to distance ourselves from those in younger generations. Can we really have close relationships with women who have different thoughts on church, different experiences with family, and different ways of talking about God? Where do we start? In A Friend in Me, Pam Lau shows you how to be a safe place for the younger women in your life. She offers five patterns women need to internalize and practice for initiating relationships and talking about issues such as faith, forgiveness, sexuality, and vocation. Most significantly, she reminds you that there doesn’t need to be a divide between generations of women. Together, we can have a global impact—and experience a deeper faith than we’ve ever known.Pam Lau is the author of Soul Strength and numerous articles for such publications as Christian Scholar’s Review and Christianity Today. She has taught writing at George Fox University and speaks around the country at conferences and retreats. A graduate of Liberty University and Colorado State University, Lau lives near Portland, Oregon, with her husband and three daughters.

It's a fabulous Friday, and today I am talking about Pamela Havey Lau's book A Friend in Me. This is a book that focuses on bridging the generational gap between young women, and older women of the Christian faith.I must say that in starting this book, I was quite skeptical. As a young women in the church, I have heard many spoken ideas on generational mentorship, but have not seen much action (other than my mother and mother-in-law with me—they break the mold). So, I came to this with an idea of what I was going to get, and was pleasantly surprised that what I got exceeded my expectations immensely.IMG_8245Lau's voice is clear, and her passion for this generational connection is a hungry sort of authorship. She hits both generations problems with the other beautifully, and more than that—accurately. She doesn't just scold the younger generation for a lack of respect and morality, and she doesn't just praise older women for the moral high ground and maturity. I also would 100 percent agree with her that the younger women long to connect on a very personal level without the fear of being a huge disappointment to those of the older generations. She addresses the phantom closeness that social media provides for those of BOTH generations, and the need for us to truly connect. Social media provides such a false sense of relationship, when most of us are lonelier than ever. She addresses judgment, humility, and other barriers that inhibit genuine relationship.BUT what I love the most is two things: First, she is genuine. She is from the gate an honest author that shares personal experience verses lofty ideas or conjectures. Second, she provides practical solutions! PRAISE JESUS! There are easy to understand truths, and achievable actions to follow in gaining safety in generational relationships. She addresses tone of voice, forgiveness, praying with pure motives, getting help when we don't understand the situation fully, prayer, and divine comfort. Her premise from the beginning is to show "Christ's extraordinary love," and to do that by the way we chose to "change the way we are relating."Lovely read people. I would encourage anyone (spiritually young or old) to read this, and ask God to help you have an open heart. How can we relate? How can we bridge this gap?

Pam Lau makes a strong case for need of deep, Christ-centered female relationships without the judgement, preaching, or condemning. This is a fabulous book with honest insight about the realities of what is lacking in personal female-to-female friendships, why there is distance between the older and younger generations, and the dire desire for real closeness. In this age of watching each other do our lives from the safety of social media, the disconnection leaves younger women wandering through life with questions, uncertainties, and misconceptions about what real-life looks and feels like, which can sometimes lead to devastating life choices/changes. Lau challenges that if we come alongside one another--DO life together--the connection between lives offers hope, understanding, and a chance to not only survive life's challenges but to find redemption and restoration in the shattered parts.Using Biblical references and personal experience from her own friendships, her own life-story, and her encounters with women from all over the nation, Lau lays out practical guidance on HOW to be refuge for one another. From the toughest conversations about sex, divorce and abortion to general everyday encouragement Lau teaches how to engage with each other without judgement or the need to "fix" what's wrong. I especially appreciated the specific focus on how to be comforting, compassionate, understanding, and forgiving. I know I need to be these things, but often I am not sure how.No woman needs to be doing life alone. That isn't what God intended. Read this book to learn why and to learn how to seize the opportunity to show the love of God IN the lives the younger women.

It opened my eyes to my role as mentor to the generations of young Christian women behind me, and also caused me to view my relationship with my college-age daughter with fresh eyes and a new perspective. It is a rare book that spurs me to take quick action -- but Pam's book did. I also appreciate the theme in the book that to be a good mentor and a safe haven for other women I must first clean my own "house" and be settled in my walk with God. Well done Pam!

I never felt the need to write a memoir, but I was curious about this. I couldn't finish it. I grew up in a narcissistic family, centered around my mother, and like most children of narcissistic families, have very few memories of my childhood. It seems as though on one hand, the author is saying she grew up in a narcissistic family, but she comes across as more narcissistic than her parents. There is the religious aspect of not wanting her behaviors found out about, but in my experience (Southern Baptist family background), that's close-mindedness, not narcissism. I empathize with her depression. But she talks about medication and drinking in the same breath. I guess that's part of my problem. If I had been able to finish, maybe things would have changed, but she seems stuck in complaining and blaming others rather than taking responsibility and trying to move past things into a healthier mental state. I hope she does. You can only blame others for your own unhappiness for so long before you have to try to accept that while there are a lot of chemicals in our brains involved, on the levels we can control, we are the only ones who let others make us feel bad. Many, many people have terrible things happen to them. Some are more resilient than others. Some have to work on their resiliency. For me, hanging on to the past was a hindrance, not beneficial. Thinly veiled vitriol is surely not therapeutic? But what do I know. Everyone is different. I will say $4.99 is a bit high for an ebook.

This book shows the lasting effects that mistreatment can have on a person, and how difficult it can be to 'move on' and be 'normal'. This is a beautiful look into the depths of a broken person trying to reassemble themselves.

SS Obersturmfuhrer Paul Meissner arrives in Auschwitz, having been injured in Russia. In charge of overseeing satellite industrial labour camps, he is ordered to improve morale and, bizarrely, is told that SS officers should take an interest in culture. Meissner’s answer is to start a chess club. Competition becomes fierce between the officers and the men, but then a suggestion occurs which causes the camp hierarchy to feel extremely unsettled. Rumours abound in the camp about a Jewish chess player who is unbeatable and this challenges Nazi ideology. Emil Clement has arrived at Auschwitz with his wife, mother and two young sons. Now he has no idea whether they are alive or dead, but his love of chess gives him a sense of hope. However, playing chess with the enemy is quite another prospect, when life and death hinges on the outcome of a game. The storyline in this novel alternates between events during the war and a 1962 chess tournament in Amsterdam, where Emil Clement is playing. When he is drawn against Wilhelm Schweninger, an ex member of the Nazi party, who worked in the Ministry of Propaganda during the war, those organising the tournament are concerned. Clement, now living in Israel, says there is no such thing as a good German, while Schweninger is unrepentant about his time as a National Socialist. Events are changed when a bishop approaches Clement and he realises that the man was once known to him, long ago, in Auschwitz. Together, the bishop, Clement and Schweninger, rediscover their past and come to terms with the long road which has left them stranded in a world they cannot come to terms with. This book explores the guilt of the perpetrator, as well as the guilt of the survivor and looks at a most unlikely friendship between men who look upon themselves as enemies. Mostly, though, it is just a very well imagined – and original – story about a chess game held in incredible circumstances; when a Jewish prisoner is forced to confront the SS and three men are forced to confront their pasts. An excellent read, wonderfully realised and with interesting characters, this would be an ideal book for reading groups, with lots of themes to discuss. This is an impressive debut and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.

In the first round Emil Clément has to play against Wilhelm Schweninger. Wilhelm Schweninger is a German who worked for the Ministry of Propaganda during the Second World War. Emil Clément is a survivor of Auschwitz. The Frenchman's life was saved because of playing chess. The two have a mutual history and are linked by Paul Meissner who is also in Amsterdam at the time of the tournament. He thinks they have unfinished business together and he tries to convince Emil to listen to him. Meissner is the person who has made sure Emil's life was spared and they have a story to tell. He's now a priest who tries to do good. The three men keep meeting each other and slowly their history is being revealed.Emil's name in Auschwitz is The Watchmaker. Because of his repair work he earns himself a couple of privileges which he always shares with a friend. When Meissner introduces chess to improve the morals of the officers in the camp he doesn't know yet that among the Jewish prisoners there's an unbeatable player. To prove that Jews are inferior some of the Germans want him to play chess against their German champions. The stakes are getting higher and higher and Emil is just a pawn in the game, someone who doesn't have a say and who has to play to save his own life and the lives of others. The Death's Head Chess Club is a story about a Jewish man who was deported to Auschwitz and went through something too terrible for words. Even though Emile manages to keep his life he loses everything else. He loses his family and everything he holds dear. In 1962 he's still a very broken man. I found it unbelievably hard to read about the horrors in the camp, so it took me some time to finish this book as I could only manage a couple of chapters at a time. Of course this isn't the first WWII book I've read, but every time I read about Auschwitz it shocks me to the core. There's a lot of information about the camp itself and about the nauseating things that were being done to the prisoners, especially the Jews. I think there's a good explanation of the hierarchy of the camp which made the story more understandable and which also made it come to life.I doubted if I would review this book for a very long time. I think John Donoghue has written a very good story and he's definitely a great writer. I had issues with the character of Meissner, who worked in Auschwitz at the end of the war. He's supposed to feel terrible because of the things that happened there and he tries to atone for what he was a part of. I kept feeling conflicted about his character, especially because Emile seems to see him as a friend towards the end of the story. For me that was too quick and also maybe a bridge too far. Because I felt so conflicted and because I didn't like certain aspects, for me this book is also a success. It made me think and it keeps making me think. I try to form an unbiased opinion, but what is the correct way to look at things in this situation? The moral questions that are arising and inner discussions I keep having with myself are turning a really good story into something great. This novel made me contemplate cruelty, the horrors of war, forgiveness, being the better person and plenty of other things. If you're prepared to feel conflicted and to read a good story that will tear you apart inside, then you should pick up this book.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "In Auschwitz, the good are punished, the evil flourish...." By E. Bukowsky In "The Death's Head Chess Club," by John Donoghue, the Nazis send Frenchman Emil Clément to Auschwitz, where he toils as a slave laborer. Before the war, Emil had a loving wife and two young sons. In 1944, when the book opens, he is a starving and exhausted concentration camp inmate, whose only comfort is chess. Emil's mystical ability to come up with consistently winning chess strategies makes him a formidable opponent. When his sadistic Nazi captors get wind of his prowess, they decide that Clément, a Jew, must be put in his place. In Auschwitz, those who manage to stay alive barely subsist on a minuscule number of calories per day. They are emaciated, freezing, and fully aware that they are living on borrowed time. The characters include SS-Obersturmführer Paul Meissner, who is assigned to keep the factories in Auschwitz running efficiently; chess champion Wilhelm Schweninger, an employee of the Ministry of Propaganda; the villainous Oberscharführer Klaus Hustek, a scheming member of the Gestapo; and Meissner's aide, Ernst Eidenmüller, who is a clever opportunist. All of these and others will have a hand in determining whether Emil will survive or perish. This ambitious and complex work of fiction moves back and forth between the 1930s, 1940s, and 1960s. These shifts are unsettling, the narrative is drawn-out and talky, and the story oversimplifies several serious questions: Should a German who regrets his participation in the oppression and extermination of Jews during the Holocaust seek forgiveness from those he has wronged? In turn, should the victims feel obligated to grant absolution to those who helped torture and murder their compatriots? Several scenes are powerful and poignant and the descriptive writing is generally vivid and evocative. However, "The Death's Head Chess Club," although readable and suspenseful, is short on substance, and therefore earns only a marginal recommendation.

By lena m. j One of the things she wrote in her book, if we CHANNEL our VISION to look past the DARKNESS of our LIFE, God will allow His PURPOSE to be SEEN. I gave this a five star, because the book was written and articulated very well....and the transparency of her life that allows you see the simple things you do in your daily life, is taken for granted. We as average size people, could never understand and experience what she experience in her daily life. While she was yet in her mothers womb,God had a plan for Charleen Lacy. There are certain parts of the book that made me teary eyed and very emotional. Don't get me wrong, this book is not about getting your emotions up, but it lets you see the challenges and obstacles she endured and over came with the help of God, and family. This woman of God knows who she is for such a time as this. This book is a worth while read....

Helpful Resource for Thinking Through Your Business Plan reviewed by Bill Pence of CoramDeotheBlog.com By Bill Pence Matt Perman is the author of the excellent 2014 book What's Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done. That book was so helpful (I’m reading it a second time with colleagues at work) that I’m going to be interested in anything that he writes. He is an important voice in helping people integrate their faith with their work. In fact he states that this resource will be especially helpful for those looking for a resource that makes the integration of faith and work explicit. He encourages us to see our work as an act of service, to the glory of God, stating that is at the heart of how to glorify God in our work and do your business plan in a gospel-centered way.He writes that this short e-book is was written to provide guidance for how to create a business plan that actually works––a plan that will truly help you in launching your new business, department, or other large initiative, without getting you stuck in the details of over-planning. It also gives specific guidance for how to create a business plan from a faith-based perspective. He defines a business plan as is simply a guide, or road map, for your business, new department, or other large effort. It will help us think through and articulate your mission and values, main objectives, core audience, comparison organizations or competitors, financial plan, core activities, marketing plan, and other key realities. A business plan is not just for those starting a new business. Perman states that if you’re starting anything or want to refine what you’ve already started, a business plan is a key step.He writes that in looking at how to create a business plan that actually works, and to do so in a way that relates to the Scriptures, we should learn from the best business thinking (Jim Collins, for example), and common grace realities as well as the Bible. He tells us what the purpose of a business plan is (to help us think through our business or other large endeavor), and takes us through the basic elements of a business plan. He takes the reader through each of these sections and briefly explains what they mean and how it translates into the ongoing fabric of our business. He also includes some helpful resources that you may find useful. He stresses that the process of developing a business is as important as the final result as the activity of thinking through your business or new endeavor in this way prepares you for effective implementation. This short book contains much helpful information and is well worth your time to read it. I know I’ll be sharing what I learned here with others, including my sister-in-law who is the Director of a Pregnancy Resource Center.

33 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Room for improvment... By JPS I hesitated for a long time before buying this book, despite all the glowing reviews that it has attracted on both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com. What finally tempted me was that it was on Byzantium and that the story was taking place during the 11th century before the First Crusade, which happens to be my favourite period currently. This originality - picking a period that few novelist have tackled up to now (the only ones I can remember were a couple of novels writing in the 70s or early 80s and that were centred around the battle of Mantzikert in 1071) - turns out to be both an asset and a liability for the author. While reading a novel taking place on the borders of the Byzantine Empire during the 11th century is a nice change, it is also more difficult to achieve, because the period is much less well known that, say, the Roman Empire during the first three hundred years AD.Having said this, I am afraid that I will have to disagree with almost everything mentioned by other reviewers. This book did not work for me. I did not like it for essentially three reasons: the plot, the characters and the historical context.I found that the plot was mostly a collection of clichés. It was predictable from the very beginning: the crippled boy is going to become a hero and he will "save it all", almost single-handed, of course. At least some of these were entirely implausible. Another reviewer on Amazon.com (D. Connell "Doug") has already mentioned some of them although, curiously, he concludes that the characters are all very realistic. How realistic is it to have a young crippled boy (about 12-13) learning fencing and becoming a proficient swordsman? How realistic is it to have this boy driving his adoptive father's chariot on his own (and then together with the daughter of his adoptive father) across a province supposedly unsafe to get to the market of Cheriana? How realistic is it for the arch-villain officer who happens to have a significant racket business to kill of out of hand anyone who refuses to pay and get away with it? Even a so-called "Agentes" (a term that only applied for the fourth and fifth centuries AD) would not have got away with so many serial and casual murders. How realistic is it that Apion, our crippled boy, manages to face four armed and grown up killers for even a split second? How realistic is it that the boy, crippled as he is, is even accepted in the thema when he decides to join the army? How realistic is it that his limp disappears and he becomes able to walk and run "normally" with no bones broken? I could go on, and on, and on but you get the point: all of this is so hard to believe that I wondered at some point if this book was not in fact some kind of heroic fantasy for teen-agers...Then we have the characters and the style. Here also, the clichés seem to come to the author: adoptive father taking in a crippled boy to atone for a past and secret sin, crippled boy who, of course, falls in love with his adoptive father's daughter but cannot think of anything else than vengeance. Arch-villain's psychopathic behaviour "explained" by a trauma in his youth when his mother had her throat cut in front in him (I'm rather unsure as to what this was supposed to "explain" or add to the story however). Young girl in love with two boys at the same time (some romance and sex needed to check the appropriate boxes). After that we have the book's style. There is very little description of places and sceneries, so that the action could be taking place almost anywhere and oppose, say, the Tang Chinese and steppe nomads, instead of the Byzantines and the Seljuk Turks, provided you changed all names and modified all references to troop types and military equipment. Essentially, the book is made up of dialogues and battle scenes: the hero always seem to be talking to someone or fighting someone when he is not talking. Of course, in the second half of the book, when he fights someone, he always wins, even when hopelessly outnumbered. I almost forgot to mention how exaggerated and gory the battle scenes happen to be: heads flying and guts spilling all over the place...Then there is the historical context and research. There are a large number of mistakes and inaccuracies, including in the glossary. Although some inaccuracies might be deliberately introduced to create a dramatic effect, they can nevertheless be problematic. The worst howler I came across was the clichés of "Muslim versus Christians" with the former crying "Allahu Akbar" and the - victorious of course - Strategos concluding by a "Nobiscum Deus!" - a "holy victory cry", as the author puts it. First, Byzantines from the Sixth Century onward and certainly by the 11th century spook Greek, not Latin. Greek-speaking was even one of the three components of what it meant to be a "Roman", as the Byzantines called themselves. Second, Byzantine warfare was largely devoid of any concept of "Holy War" and "Holy War" had also gone rather out of fashion among the Muslims by the 11th century although it would come back into fashion, thanks to the Crusades. Third, even the Latin quotation seems incorrect and should probably be "Deus Nobiscum" (God is with us). Fourth, rather than "a holy victory cry", it was originally a war cry to bolster morale as Western Christian troops entered battle. In addition to this, there are a number of anachronisms. Contrary to the impression given in the book, there was no such thing as an average number of troops for each thema. These varied in size and in the number of part-time soldiers that could be raised. Even the size of subunits (Tourma, droungos, bandon) varied significantly in size from one theme to another and one district to another within each theme. Moreover, the indicative numbers provided by the author are relevant for the ninth century. By the eleventh century, both the size and the quality of thematic troops had been reduced and deteriorated for a number of reasons, including the fact that as the frontiers were pushed further back, the thematic troops of themes that had previously been on the border were no longer useful and therefore no longer mustered. A third example of problems is the chronology, with the prologue set in AD 1026 and the strategos Cydones declaring that "the years ahead will be troubled and dark for Byzantium." I appreciate that this and numerous similar statements are inserted for dramatic effect. The only problem is that, in AD 1026 the Empire was at peace. One of its greatest Solider-Emperors (Basile II) had tended the year before after having extensively campaigned in Armenia and Iberia at the end of his reign, and there was simply NO threat on the eastern frontier of the Empire. Up to AD 1040, when they finally conquered the rival Ghaznavids in actual Afghanistan, the Seljuks had other "fish to fry" than go raiding the Byzantine Empire. There are also problems with the glossary. The tagmata (which means "the regiments" - of full-time professional troops - that are referred to in the glossary are in fact those of the 8th and 9th centuries and they were never around five thousand men each (something that the author has picked up from Warren Treadgold) simply because the Empire would have been unable to afford the cost of maintaining some 25000 of them on a full-time basis. Their total number at the time was more likely around 4000. By the 11th century, however, they were no longer clustered around Constantinople but spread all along the borders and under the command of various Dukes who also had authority over any Strategos whose province was part of their military district. The number of Tagmata had significantly increased since around AD 800. Numerous regiments of foreigners (generally lumped up as "foreign mercenaries") such as Franks (starting with Norman knights), Rus and Petchnègues were added and additional Tagmas of Greeks were also raised. Again, sizes varied considerably but there was a tendency for smaller and more flexible units of 200 to 500 men, the size of the old bandon (with the bandon being reduced to around 50-60 troopers). As you can see from this overlong review (and there is a host of issues which I failed to mention), this book has a number of problems. While those related to the plot, style and characters may be subjective to some extent (personal opinions etc...), the issues pertaining to the historical context and research are not. There seems to be a reason for the absence of historical novels on this period and it has to do with its complexity, which the author may not have fully grasped when he embarked on this project. If I may make some suggestions for the historical background, so that the historical setting for the next episode may be improved, I would recommend the following:- The Byzantine Empire 1025-1204, A Political History, by Michael Angold, in particular the first five chapters (roughly 100 pages)- Warfare, State and Society in the Byzantine World 565-1204, by John Haldon- The Making of Byzantium, 600-1025, by Mark Whittow, which may be of particular interest to the author in order to understand the shift in strategy and military practices that took place during the 10th and then again during the 11th centuries.

The story flows so well it makes putting the book down very difficult. Doherty puts you right into a very interesting period of time. For those who enjoy historical fiction this book ticks all the boxes, battles, adventure, intrigue and an insight as to how the character ticks. A great read, Doherty ranks with the best in historical novels - Simon Scarrow, Anthony Riches, Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, Ben Kane, John Stack and Harry Sidebottom.

By Charles Leopard Honestly, I thought we were continuing Gordon's first book, Legionary and at first was thinking, oh this is something different. The next thing I know I'm reading this book way past when I normally go to bed every evening and then after putting the book down I'm laying there wide awake. Part of me says "oh well read on" and the other part knows I have got to get to sleep, work in the morning and all.I am always a little depressed after reading a good book because my thoughts eventually dwell to how long before we get the next in the series, if there is a series, and thankfully it would appear Gordon is planning on writing a sequel.I lived in Turkey 70-75 in Izmir and later in Adana in 92-95 (well south/southwest of all of the action) but have some knowledge about the country and a bit of their history but usually most of the historical information seem to concentrate on the Persians, Crusaders rumbling through, Ottomans, or post WWI with Ataturk. It was very interesting to read about this specific time period. The period was unfamiliar, the military terms weren't something I was used to but Gordon now has me hooked. A fantastic read and very entertaining. Keep them coming!

We'd tried flash cards, BOB books, Hooked on Phonics, and several websites. He would "get it" one day and forget it the next. We were both frustrated and ready to give up when a friend suggested Moore's book. Amazing! He was excited and retained his new reading skills! He's now ready to start Kdg and is reading Nate the Great books on his own! Thank you! Thank you!

Review "Mr. Manfred's novel carries the feel of open country, of grass and wind, sun and rain, moonlight and starlight. . . . It is harshly real."—New York Herald Tribune (New York Herald Tribune)“Manfred has woven a wondrously complex story of a young Sioux warrior’s search for the inner core of manhood’s dignity—the ability to live with oneself.”—San Francisco Chronicle  (San Francisco Chronicle)“Here is Indian lore, humor, customs, daily life, religion, identification with nature—and superb endurance in full detail, color, and understanding. Strenuous—and satisfying.”—Kirkus Reviews   (Kirkus Reviews)“His narrative has in it both the kick of actual life and the power of vision. . . . A fine and attractive story.”—New York Times (New York Times)

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The start of a great saga By Steve Frederick Manfred is one of the great lost American writers, and "Conquering Horse" is the beginning of the five-novel cycle (the "Buckskin Man" tales) at the core of his achievement. This novel takes place among the Sioux in the early 1800s, before white settlers started appearing in the region Manfred dubbed "Siouxland." Subsequent titles take in the Mountain Man era ("Lord Grizzly"), the horrifying violence of the 1862 Sioux Uprising ("Scarlet Plume"), the havoc wrought by gold miners in the 1870s ("King of Spades"), and the final transformation of the West in the image of Old World values ("Riders of Judgment") with a new century coming into view. Manfred is a superbly evocative writer, and taken as a whole the five novels (which were published out of sequence) create a unified picture of the Old West that is harsh and unsentimental, yet filled with grandeur and extraordinary writing.

The various customs of the Native Americans and the ways that the minds of prior generations worked in their own times. I have always had a love of horses and this novel certainly kept my attention. This book is only one of the Buckskin Man Series. They are all excellent. They have an order in which they should be read to be most effective because of the dates. If I can remember the order they are as follows. 1. Conquering Horse. 2. Lord Grizzley 3. Riders of Judgement 4. Jack of Spades 5. Scarlet Plum I was not disappointed in one of these. Frederick Manfred also wrote under the name of Fredrica. I do however, have a few of his books that I do not like. His home was in Minnesota and the area that he writes about in all these novels is the five state area around Minnesota.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Expectations By darkpassenger A great story with excellent pacing and descriptive writing. A regional MN writer, Frederick Manfred is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in the area.
