Two women. Two generations. Two different concepts of truth. When Fawn finds photographs of a stranger in her mother’s jewelry box, she is left to question her own past. Who is this woman with the auburn hair? Why was her mother so careful to hide the pictures? With her daughter’s uncovering of a long-held secret, Alina is forced to reopen the wounds she had hidden for more than forty years. Now, with her family as the audience, Alina must give breath to fragments of her life she had drowned, and unravel what she had twisted into truth. The Freedom of a Tangled Vine is the story of one family’s discovery of what lies between memory and reality. And of the intricate ties that define and embrace us. "A beautiful and emotional novel about the bonds that define who we are. With words that matter and images with purpose, this nostalgic read is a brilliantly crafted story of the strength of family and the unwavering love of a mother." - Marilyn Jax, international award-winning author "A love story, a beautiful glimpse of small town life in the Midwest, and a family drama all in one: The Freedom of a Tangled Vine touches its reader with passages of time, aging, and choice." - Good Reads review "Out of a complicated family emerges a love story . . . with characters that feel as if they live next door . . . and sentimental glimpses into childhood." - Good Reads review Book Excerpt: The phone in the house was ringing, so Alina quickly raced in to catch it. Usually, she’d let it ring, but it could be one of the boys, and she could hear in her head the sound of each of their voices. She held her arms against her chest to keep her swimsuit top from sliding as she ran across the grass and inside the house. In her rush, she hit her hip bone against the countertop corner. The type of sudden pain that stings unbearably at first but eventually dissolves. She grabbed at the phone before the caller would give up. “Hello!” she answered breathlessly. “May I speak to Lea Ray?” a voice, one that sounded like a person conducting a survey, asked. “Lea? Well, yes, this is her. I haven’t gone by that name for—” “Is this Lea Ray, maiden name Nelson?” Sweat from sunbathing dripped from Alina’s forehead. She wiped it with her hand. “What? Yes, that’s me… who is this?” she asked. “Lea, this is Reaching Home Association. I’m calling regarding an adoption legalized in 1964?” There is a time in your life when your youth seems like it happened to someone else. As if your younger self is a child you’d like to visit. You want to look deeply into that child’s eyes, let her see herself through your eyes. You feel as if you should scold her for times she veered off track, giggle with her about things like powdered donuts and swings that stretch over water. You want to wipe her little tears and, if it’s cold, hand her an extra pair of mittens. Sometimes you see her a bit older, as a young woman, and you want to tell her it will all work out okay. Then you want to hold her in your arms, to remember her. Someday you introduce the woman of your youth to yourself, and the walls between time blend together. Close your eyes. You are there. Open. You are here. This is the pause. “Yes,” Alina said. And the room was past and present. “April 4, 1964. I know why you are calling.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While some books leave you panting, others are compelling, because, like breath, we MUST breath it in, for in that breath, there is life. This book was like the latter. I read it, cover to cover, with hardly a break taken. As I closed the cover, I felt a melancholy peace come over me. I want these characters in my life, and now, for my time spent with them, Fawn, Alina, Luisa and Jon are there, in my memories. And I am better off for their company. The burdens carried by women are often borne quietly, mostly silently. We see glimpses of women's pain and frustration, but do not know how to ask what the story is behind those emotions. Many books focus on the gut-wrenching moments and celebrate survival, or they skim over "the event" and focus on the rebuilding in so much celebration that women become caricatures. We need more books that help show the generations how to acknowledge one another's realities and the ways our pasts affect our presents. Functional families take brokenness and create continuity so that stability becomes normal, in spite of the broken parts. This book manages to show a mother who manages this splendidly. Mothers and daughters, read this book and start your own conversations about your own stories. Fathers and sons, read this to understand the women you love, and through story, learn how vital you are to the families you belong.
