Rockefeller, Jr., before their enemies can bury the truth – and them – forever.

From The Ashes, Jeremy Burns By thewanderingjew Initially, the novel seemed as if it would be too violent for me to read, but after the early scenes of murder, the book turned into the quintessential mystery! It was exciting and tense. It held my attention fast. I downloaded this book from Barnes and Noble to my computer Nook app. It was a Free Friday offering, and it is a book I would recommend to all those who love spy novels, especially those with underlying government conspiracies. The book begins in 1957, with the unexpected suicide of a government agent, but it harkens back to the early 1930's, when the secret government agency called the Division is created to ostensibly stop the spread of Communism. Unfortunately, the method it chooses to do this backfires, and their plan and its outcome must be hidden forever to prevent a scandal of major worldwide proportions from developing. Originally launched by Henry Lewis Stimson, Secretary of State to President Hoover, with the funds of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., this clandestine plan and agency is forced to perpetuate itself to protect the secret of their involvement. To accomplish this, the Division eliminated anyone who could possibly expose them, and often innocent people were simply outright murdered by the government because a hint of the folly was suggested. There was one fly in the ointment, however, that they could not control; no matter how many people were eliminated, they had never found the documents that were signed by Rockefeller and Stimson and secreted away by Rockefeller, for protection. The dossiers still existed, and they must be found and finally disposed of so there would no longer be a record of the behavior of this clandestine agency or its historic, heinous involvement regarding World War II.When Michael Richner is murdered, his broken-hearted fiancée, Mara, and his brother Jon, team up to find out why this innocent, well-loved young man has been killed. The plot thickens when Jon is also attacked in his brother's apartment, but his report of the incident is not believed by the police. The two take off on their own, fearing for their lives, up against a machine far bigger and more mercenary than they realize, following little clues and finally discovering the secret that The Division has been trying to find for decades. Do they succeed in making it public and bringing it to the attention of the world, finally exposing the truth? In some ways, the details of the tale try your imagination, but the author weaves so powerful a story, that when you question it, it seems believable. This book feels like it will be a great movie. You will find yourself wondering, is this story about a government out of control or a shadow government, and could this happen or even exist today?

His writing style is superb and his characters are absolutely gripping. From page one, the author pulled me into the story, making me feel a part of the intense plot line. From murder, to conspiracy, to amazing twists, this author takes the reader on one heck of a ride!Jonathan Rickner's character is absolutely awesome. I felt a part of him instantly, and the wild suspense ride he went on, I was right there beside him. Finding out your brother is dead because of suicide just doesn't cut it for Jonathan. I totally was with him when he knew there was more sinister stuff behind the "suicide". Enlisting the help of Michael's fiance, Mara, Jonathan sets out to uncover the truth behind his brother's death. In the 1950's you just don't get a lot of murders popping up, so what Jonathan and Mara uncover is just jaw dropping. The reason behind Michael's death will leave you stunned. It's a conspiracy of secrets, lies, death and so much more. But, for Jonathan and Mara, their time is limited, and running out fast.I won't go into too much more detail for this amazing 5 Book worthy debut, because I don't want to giveaway spoilers! But I will say, that if you love an intense, action filled, mysterious conspiracy thriller, then Jeremy Burns is the author to turn. Jeremy Burns' debut thriller is one of the best I've read in ages. I am totally looking forward to what's happening with Jonathan Rickner and the next book can't come fast enough for me! Well done on your debut, Jeremy!*This review is based on a complimentary copy which was provided for an honest review*

I loved the characters (who were really well developed) the hunt for clues, the imaginative and often disturbing turns of events, and the well-researched historical tie-ins that really made me raise my eyebrows more than once. Such a creative tale woven in an exciting way that was fun to read.

Nine year old Charlie dug the heels of her dirty sneakers harder into the plump sides of her cream colored pony. With its neck outstretched, Peanut ran as fast as his short legs would take him. Where had that kid been? Did she find the Old Mill? Four young teens discover a mystery around old sugar mill ruins they found while riding their horses in the woods. Its grey tabby walls were crumbling with age and covered with heavy vines. When they rode to the river to eat their lunch, yellowed grass in square shapes were there. Someone was coming into the woods. Would it still be safe for them to ride? Charlie senses a mystery just waiting to be solved. On a night visit, alone, Charlie is seen! In her frantic escape, she runs Peanut off the road through the brush. As she looks back to see if she is being followed, a low hanging branch hits her across the forehead, knocking her off the pony and she falls unconscious to the ground.

Nellie s sailor is charming; he s her true love, but his involvement in the secret service turns her life upside down.

Innocence was blown out of the trenches during WWII. It didn t matter if it was the trenches of war, or the trenches of love. It was a time to find out what you were made of; a time to learn who you were. Bravery and valor were braided between flesh and soul.

Some people call them the greatest generation. Maybe they were simply the generation of greatness. It was everything for God, Country, and Family or nothing at all. True love fell easily, and it stayed where it landed because they were always faithful Semper Fidelis.

About the Author

M.L. BRUMMETT, an American writer, believes a good book should be a treasure trove of adoration in the reader s hands. A good novel should cast the reader into another era and give them the opportunity to live adventures outside of their own lives. She believes the reader should know each character personally in a good piece of literature, and no matter how often the reader opens their favorite book, they should find something comforting and familiar that will enrich their lives. Her passion for writing developed early in her lifetime. As a child she carried a notebook with her to jot down characteristics of everyday people to use as material for writing projects; a practice she still does today.

Outside of her passion for writing, Brummett chose a profession in human resources which provides another creative outlet by creating training and educational programs. She holds a BA, in Business Administration, and is completing her MBA in Human Resource Leadership. Additional credits include a season of songwriting in Nashville, Tennessee. She extended her skills in the music industry into promotions and band management. She owned a country music show in Louisville, Kentucky, which spotlighted local talent.

Brummett currently resides in Springfield, Missouri, with an abundance of friends and special family. She is a member of the Springfield Writers Guild.

The book centers around the author’s parents, before they were married, based on their letters and journals. It speaks of a time gone by, when people were poor, yet honorable; when young men were fighting a war far away from home and dying; where goods were rationed - even collected, women were working the assembly lines, and fear of air raids were a reality. There’s something in this book for everyone. Family, friendship, love, fear, blood, guts... And, as I understand it, book two is underway.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read! By Sally Rowe From the first turn of the page, the author had me hooked into this captivating historical novel set in the years during World War II. Her character development was engaging, as I met the young men and women whose lives I would follow in their corner of the globe. The story brings to light the impact of this war on young Americans called to duty in some form or another. The reader is provided with accurate revelations and details of life and events in this era. I gained admiration for the courage these men and women showed as they lived amidst change, challenges, romance and combat. Read this book and be prepared to find a story of resilience, love, intrigue, commitment.and the sting of war.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read. By Michael An absolute must read. The author makes you feel like you are living in the Era watching the story unfold. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I would love to see this made into a movie!!

As a long time comic reader I get used to the characters and expect them to act a certain way. And tend to get bored with them. That’s one reason I liked the Midnight Jay and Scarlet Derby. They are two fresh characters that I knew nothing about and had no predetermined expectations of.The Story line held my interest and was a smooth and easy read. The characters were likeable and relatable. The fact that Thaddeus Headwater (Scarlet Derby) and Mary Jane (Midnight Jay) are married was a nice touch. Even though they are the smartest and best crime fighters in London, they also have a real life and real problems outside of crime fighting. To see how they deal with their past lives and each other’s insecurities and how they are willing to work through those problems strengthens their marriage and the characters. I felt that was something I could relate to and drew me in more.Even with the seriousness of real life there was no lack of humor. The villains, as bad they may be, all a have a personality that brings a light-heartedness to the story. With no one having superpowers they rely on their brains and creativity. Whether it’s was the Three Headed Mob or giant coffee beans, you couldn’t help but laugh at the attempts of each villain as they try to take over London.Overall I thought the stories were great. The only issue I have as that I wanted more. I am looking forward to a volume 2 of The Scarlet Derby and Midnight Jay.

By Kaitlin McCall Here is a book that reminds me of 1970's Batman meets Victorian England. It is super campy, and over the top (all the henchmen the in the first story, have "henchman" on their outfit), but in a good way. The main characters are likeable, and have just enough mystery to keep you reading. I love the fact that Midnight Jay may be the stronger of the two, and is a balance to the Darby. The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars is the chemistry is a bit slapdash, and then only because it is such a major component of one of the characters. Do buy this if you like over the top short stories.

From the Author When I became a public Christian in 2010, my motivation was simple: Christ healed my heart. Why did I need healing? In a five-month period, I lost my mother to lung cancer, my son had life-threatening pneumonia and I lost my brother to suicide. This book grew from the healing I found following Christ and reading Scripture.

About the Author Genevieve A. Howard lives in rural Missouri with her family and animals, including a pony. She serves as a deacon and a Stephen Minister at her church. Stephen Ministers are trained to offer one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. She draws strength from Scripture, her faith and her friends. With a deep affection for knitting, crochet, hot tea and puttering, she plans to reach her peak as an old woman.

A Small Book That Leads to Big Ideas By Debbie The author has written a book that people of all faiths, or even no faith, master crafters or those who are all thumbs, can use as part of their reflective practice in daily life. The author's writing is precise and crisp and because of that it is so easy to take a moment, sit down and open this book to any page and find a small thought that can inspire and center you. The writer reminds us that the simple small acts we do in daily life can lead to deeper spiritual practices. This is a book to keep by your reading chair or at your desk at work when you need a decaffeinated pick-me-up. One of my favorite thoughts:"Born from soil, sun and water, the plants give us their cotton that we spin into yarn. I crochet the yarn and turn it into a creative cheery gift for a friend. After use, the cloth will disintegrate and go back into the earth where it can feed new plants. Like the cotton, I have to be willing to change."

By Cindy Holley I have had the honor and privilege of reading this book. Genevieve has put her talents to great use. This book is well written with a daily devotional that never gets old. Sitting with a cup of tea on my sun porch with her book in hand gives me peace of heart and fills my soul with comfort. Being a woman of crafting, it is so refreshing to read these devotionals knowing you are connecting to someone who understands the ups and downs of using your hands for craft work and how this co-relates to doing for others. This past year, I used Geneiveve's online devotionals to hold a ladies bible class. Her creativity helped me in more ways that she will never know. I'm so thankful to have had the privilege to get to know her through this book and her daily blog. You will not regret purchasing this book!

Regardless of whether or not you craft with yarn we all create things in our everyday lives. Slowing down to remember that there can be joy in every experience - making a dinner for our family, completing a task at work, creating a craft project and all things in between. The author does a fabulous job of weaving her stories into your everyday experiences and reminding us to slow down and appreciate life! This book can be picked up and read very quickly, but will have a lasting impact on the reader! Absolutely love it!

Best book on doing business for transformation out there By Abu Daniel The world is changing fast, and the way the Church does missions needs to keep up. Business for transformation (B4T) is the future of missions, not simply to get visas but to bring hope via jobs as hope is brought via Christ. Everyone in the world wants a good job, so we take this book seriously and learn from Patrick Lai how to create good jobs in difficult places amongst unreached peoples. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in starting a business amongst the unreached or for understanding B4T in general. No one has done more research and has more practical experience (a great combination!) in this field than Patrick Lai, so as Larry Sharp states on the back cover he Patrick is the most qualified person to write this book. One note: he leans on principles from his first book, "Tentmaking: The Life and Work of Business as Missions" so I would recommend you read that first or along side this one. This is a very practical book, not covering the theology of work or missions in general. Instead it focuses on best practices and lots of stories from B4T practitioners around the world. A must read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well Plotted, Reasonably Entertaining, and Exceptionally Well Drawn By Pop Bop You know, Sherlock Holmes must be one of the most widely used and abused fictional characters in the public domain. (There's even a new book out that's based on the premise that Mrs. Hudson was the real brains behind Holmes and Watson.) So, a mashup of Holmes and the Necronomicon just struck me as possibly a bridge too far. Well, guess what? I'm an idiot. This book was a clever and entertaining variation on the Holmes canon. This is Holmes' second involvement with the supernatural, following on after "Sherlock Holmes and the Vampires of London". Again, Sherlock is in hiding and, again, the story is told in the first person by Holmes, (supposedly writing a missive to Watson). It's mostly an actioner without much in the way of mystery solving or deducing, and to that extent it does stray from the usual Holmes tale. (In fact, there are a lot of pretty convenient unHolmesian hunches and implausible leaps in understanding that often save the day.) On the other hand we do get a decent, if superficial, sense of being in Holmes' head, and that is probably the book's greatest appeal. That said, I don't know if I would have cared that much for this effort had it been just a prose novel. This is one of those cases in which the graphic aspect is a major positive feature of the experience. The illustrator has drawn an interesting Holmes - older, a bit thicker around the middle, and rather severe. All of the characters are very expressive and drawn to faithfully project actual emotions. This is not a "cartoonish" effort. That effect is enhanced by some very detailed and immersive large panels setting out and back-dropping many of the action sequences. It's not arty or photorealistic, but the drawing, while mutely colored, is expansive, detailed and rich.As to the Lovecraft angle, well, there is a lot of mishegoss involving a copy of the "Necronomicon", but that serves mostly just as a magical thingy and there's never any connection made to the Cthulhu mythos or other aspects of the Lovecraft canon. I'm open to such references, but if you're a Lovecraft fan looking for a real mashup, this will disappoint. There are lots of oblique references to deeper conspiracies, other magicks, and all sorts of supernatural shenanigans to come in later volumes, but none of the hints seemed that tempting. (Although deadpan semi-sorceress Queen Victoria is sort of a hoot.)The real appeal, to me, was that this was just an accomplished and entertaining take on Holmes dealing with the supernatural, and his thoughtful, restrained and rigorous approach to things that really go bump in the night was, for want of a better word, fun. Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

The plot in this one was, well, it almost felt like an afterthought, to be honest, as it felt fairly rushed at times. It honestly felt like there should have been another story in between the "Vampires of London" and this one. The story also felt a little disjointed in sections, but I want to attribute that to the fact that it is a graphic novel, and that does sometimes happen in that format.I think this kind of a story would have worked better as a standard novel instead of a graphic one, but it is still enjoyable.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sherlock Holmes faces the elder gods By J. Sasse Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon is a simply marvelous graphic novel.  This Soleil-Dark Horse joint production combines exquisitely detailed art with a thrilling supernatural plot.  Sylvain Cordurie is a French writer and artist known for his tales pitting the classic detective against various nefarious supernatural creatures menacing London. The one weakness it has is due to its length and format, if is difficult to portray Sherlock’s eye for detail and his superior reasoning ability.  What places Sherlock Holmes in the story is his conflict with Moriarty, who has returned from the dead.  Moriarty needs Sherlock in order to return to his former self. Moriarty is the pawn of a man desiring the Necronomicon.  The writer makes use of the reader’s background knowledge of the Sherlock Holmes, his conflict with Moriarty, and the results of Reichenbach Falls to his advantage.  Whether more of Holmes’s deductive capabilities will be put to use in other volumes has yet to be seen.Viewed in its entirety Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon is an imaginative, beautifully illustrated graphic novel.  It is a fitting tribute to both Lovecraft and Doyle.  I look forward to reading future volumes.4/5I received a copy of Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon from Dark Horse in exchange for an honest review.—CrittermomVisit Muttcafe.com for more reviews

Like an erudite professional and scholar which he undoubtedly is By Anthony Nnaji Like an erudite professional and scholar which he undoubtedly is, Peter Ogudoro has carefully crafted this masterpiece and captured the process of attaining to excellence in life. The book ‘’Right thinking, Right actions’’ is written for the professional and the beginner alike but with a common desire to pursue and attain higher heights. By Michael Adeko First of all I must confess that im being challenged and motivated at the sametime, I almost let go when I could see that prosperity seemed impossible for me after I've tried somany things in many different ways. Whenever I'm at the edge of the breakthrough one thing or the other scatters all that i have started. At some stage I felt like all of my dreams are shattered and the strength within me is fading away like a smoke in the air.But after reading this book I have a feeling within me that I CAN BEGIN AGAIN. I now know where to start thru the help of Mr Peter Ogurodu who has inspired me in so many ways and my belief from now is that if I CAN THINK RIGHT AND TAKE ACTION the my problems are more than half solved. I know now the path to take and I believe that I will never fail again even though my strength has failed me several times in the past. I am convienced that I will make it and no turning back. I would like to encourage whoever has not read this book to quickly get a copy and read it.Thank you Mr Peter

By Suzanne Grant His Silent World is an interesting and insightful view into an Afro-American family that dealt with a child's hearing loss. This is certainly a valuable teaching tool on respecting, associating and befriending those who have a disability. It demonstrates to the "normal population" not to judge because of a disability but to help one achieve all he can become. It is a warm, heartfelt family approach that radiates with love, in all aspects, to help J.B develop normally. Cudos to the Mitchell family for taking a stand and being a loud advocate for this innocent little boy! A must read, for children and adults, on acceptance. Thanks for writing this inside perspective on the new norm. Great job!

This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas’s historical novel, “Twenty Years After”. The sequel to “The Three Musketeers”, it is set twenty years after the first episode. The aging musketeers are coaxed out of retirement when a dastardly threat to the monarchy presents itself, but will they be able to succeed this time? Packed with intrigue and daring-do, “Twenty Years After” will not disappoint fans of Duma’s work. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "Chicot the Jester" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his lavish lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are becoming extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

His adventure stories still evoke a sense of wonderment and raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Most movies of the same titles do not portray the events as he wrote them, but I have found that most accomodate the tempo or the 'feel' of his novels. I would additionally like to set the record straight on the trilogy argument that I see in most of the reviews in this page. The series was originally published as a trilogy, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and Vicomte de Bragelonne. The Vicomte de Bragelonne is now published by most in three volumes: Vicomte de Bragellone, Louise de la Valliere, and finally The Man in the Iron Mask. I have seen it split into four parts with Ten Years Later being placed in between the Vicomte de Bragellone and Louise de la Valliere. This splitting was done because when the three are combined, or rather not split, the novel is large and cumbersome to read. I hope that all this literary information does not detract one from the greatness of this series however, it is truly a wonderful tale to read about, and the story endures through to modern times with the same ferver in which it was released.

Historical fiction from the master, more mature than The Three Musketeers By Chip Hunter This highly-pleasing sequel to The Three Musketeers should please any fan of Dumas. While including most of the same characters as that first book of the series, this one presents a significantly different reading experience. With a more complex plot, somewhat less 'action', and a greater degree of political intrigue, TWENTY YEARS AFTER is really a more mature book than its predecessor. Two decades after the close of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, we find our heroes living individual (and somehow unfulfilling) lives apart from one another. As d'Artagnan decides that he's had enough of living in the shadows of his old exploits, and decides to take a more active role in present day politics, the current adventure begins. After reintroducing us to each of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as d'Artagnan tries to recruit them for new adventures, Dumas sets in motion events that see our heroes intricately involved in world events that will shape the future of Europe. One of the most interesting aspects of TWENTY YEARS AFTER is the growth of d'Artagnan. From the wide-eyed and inexperienced young man of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, d'Artagnan has become a seasoned and extremely confident soldier by the start of this one. While maintaining his rascaliness, he has developed a sharp wit and a rather devious imagination. Indeed, you will see that it is d'Artagnan's strong mind that enables him to succeed more than his strong arm in this book (as opposed to THE THREE MUSKETEERS). Here d'Artagnan is actually looked to as the de facto leader of the intrepid foursome that before he only wanted to follow. This more developed d'Artagnan now rivals the Count of Monte Cristo as my favorite Dumas character. As a piece of historical fiction, TWENTY YEARS AFTER is much more demanding than THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Those without a fairly strong foundation in mid 17th century French and English history might find themselves somewhat lost as Dumas expects a certain amount of knowledge of the setting in his readers. In this aspect, the Oxford World's Classic edition will help immensely (see below). While the reader is still treated to a grand adventure, with all of the aspects that readers of Dumas expect, the enjoyment of this book will only be enhanced by a good understanding of the history behind this work and the implications it has on the future. Throughout TWENTY YEARS AFTER, d'Artagnan and company find themselves intimately involved in major historical events and typically influencing their outcome. As usual, this Oxford World's Classics edition is excellent. With valuable explanatory notes and a detailed list of characters in the back of the book, you'll be able to navigate this complex story with a greater level of understanding than would be likely with the text only. The explanatory notes are denoted with a simple "*", and remain inconspicuous while reading the story, not distracting the reader like same-page notes have a tendency to do. You'll find that depending on your mood or your curiosity, you might or might not flip to the back of the book to look up individual notes. If you enjoyed THE THREE MUSKETEERS, let the adventure continue with this excellent book! Highly recommended.

Since this is not a trilogy which can be read out of order, the best way of describing the book is probably to compare it to the first one.The basis is quite simple: it is twenty years since the adventures of the Four, and they have gone their separate ways. After Cardinal Richeleu's death, the new de-facto ruler of France is Mazarin, who is less ruthless yet less honourable. Rather than feared and hated as Richeleu was, Mazarin is unpopular, despised and scorned - and has a reputation for enormous avarice. As d'Artagnan's brilliance has gone largely unrewarded in his 20 years as lieutenant of the Musketeers, he embraces the chance to serve Mazarin directly. However, in trying to gather his three friends, he finds out the extent to which time separates people. No longer a unit, the four are caught on opposite sides of the historical Fronde conflict. The book is essentially about their exploits with the added dimension of the attempts to maintain their friendship despite the outside world causing many a rift. I think this is the book's greatest strength, as the whole trilogy shows a kind of progression from pure swashbuckling at the start of the Three Musketeers to a more introspective attitude. In Twenty Years after, this applies not only to history, but to friendships and interpersonal relationships. This book contains many more detailed references to historical events (as many events in the first book weren't related to documented events) and hence will envelop you in a more concrete historical setting. On the other hand, this will mean more inaccuracies. Furthermore, Twenty Years after is longer than The Three Musketeers (so don't expect to get through it in one afternoon) but it's still classic drama-filled, scheming Dumas.Overall, a great book. I agree with people who say it's as good as the original, just don't expect more of EXACTLY the same - if it were it would be boring, but as Athos, Porthos, d'Artagnan and Aramis mature, so does our reading of their exploits.

If God is transcendent, how can human beings speak meaningfully about him? For centuries philosophers and theologians have asked whether and how it is possible to talk about God. The shared answer to this question goes by the name of "analogy," which recognizes both similarity and difference between the divine being and human language. In the twentieth century, Karl Barth, Erich Przywara, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Eberhard Jüngel explored this question in new and controversial ways that continue to shape contemporary debates in theology. In The Analogy of Faith: The Quest for God's Speakability, Archie Spencer examines the problem of analogy in its ancient, medieval and modern forms. He argues for a Christological version of Barth’s analogy of faith, informed by Jüngel's analogy of advent, as the way forward for Protestant theology in answering the problem of God's speakability.

The Analogy of Faith: The Quest for God's Speakability (Strategic Initiatives in Evangelical Theology), by Archie J. Spencer

Review "A question which we don't often stop to think about in theological discussions is whether or not it is, in principle, possible to speak of the divine. Archie Spencer's book, The Analogy of Faith, asks just this question and offers an in-depth analysis of various approaches alongside proposing a model for speaking about God. . . . It is a deep work that demands much reflection and consideration. It is the kind of seminal writing to which one will constantly return as one thinks about the topic discussed. I can say that I learned a great deal from the book, and had my mind stretched as it hasn't been stretched in some time. I recommend it highly." (J.W. Wartick, "Always Have a Reason", November 25, 2015)"In this engaging volume, Archie J. Spencer explores the controverted issue at the heart of the enterprise of theology―the issue of analogy. The book offers not only a discerning conversation with Augustine and Aquinas on analogy, attending to both their philosophical predecessors and their complex reception histories, but also a thoughtful interaction with more recent work on analogy from Karl Barth and Eberhard Jüngel. The result of this series of studies, as well as of the related exegetical labors, is Spencer's own constructive proposal, setting forth a new, resolutely Christocentric understanding of analogy along the three complementary dimensions of participation, performance and parable. This is rigorous and generative Christian dogmatics of an impressive order and deserves to be widely attended." (Paul T. Nimmo, University of Aberdeen)"The question of analogy leads to the heart of the very possibility of theology. Spencer invites his readers to consider afresh the long tradition of reflection on analogy with a view to a contemporary restatement of both the classical problem and its possible evangelical solution. Drawing upon Barth and Jüngel in particular, he argues convincingly that faithful talk of God can and must be graciously suspended from the living and eloquent reality of Jesus Christ. Spencer here makes a substantive contribution to a fundamental debate in Christian theology." (Philip G. Ziegler, University of Aberdeen)"Years of careful research stand behind this book, which is distinguished by its strong thesis, bold argumentation and close reading of sources ranging across the entire history of theology. Scholars interested in the doctrine of analogy, or the relationship between Christology and theological method, will find much of value here, as will those interested in Thomas Aquinas, Karl Barth, Eberhard Jüngel, or the relationship between Protestant and Catholic theology." (Keith L. Johnson, Wheaton College)"Spencer's provocative thesis maintains that Augustine's undue reliance on the Neoplatonic tradition led most of the subsequent Christian tradition astray. Boethius, Pseudo-Dionysius, Anselm, Peter Lombard, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, as well as the later Thomist tradition, all were beguiled by a totalizing metaphysical epistemology that was alien to God's self-revelation in Christ. Spencer's penetrating critique, along with his clarion call for an alternative, Christological analogy of faith, is truly deserving of the intense discussion it is bound to evoke." (Hans Boersma, J. I. Packer Professor of Theology, Regent College)

About the Author Archie J. Spencer (ThD, University of Toronto School of Theology) is associate professor of theology and John H. Pickford Chair of Systematic Theology for Northwest Baptist Seminary. Wartick A question which we don’t often stop to think about in theological discussions is whether or not it is, in principle, possible to speak of the divine. Archie Spencer’s book, The Analogy of Faith, asks just this question and offers an in-depth analysis of various approaches alongside proposing a model for speaking about God.The book is split, roughly, between analysis of various proposed models for speaking about God and a development of a Christocentric model for speaking of the divine. The analysis of Aristotle’s analogy of being in the first chapter is particularly interesting. Spencer notes that because Aristotle’s analogy depends upon the interrelatedness of things through cause, and because God is the ultimate relation of causation as the unmoved mover, his concept of analogy is ultimately almost useless. The reason is because it becomes too broad: effectively anything can be related to anything else through an analogy of relation, and then this tells us nothing about the things being related themselves. Yet even here Spencer argues that Aristotle’s concept of analogy–itself reliant upon Plato in many relevant ways–can be useful in that it relates causality and the divine ideas, thus preparing the way for Neoplatonist thinking.Following on the heals of this analysis are some fantastic insights into Augustinian and Thomistic thought about analogy as well. Thomas Aquinas is perhaps the most important thinker regarding the use of analogy in speaking about God of all time. As Spencer notes, it is impossible to adequately deal with the topic without spending significant time on Aquinas’s view of analogy. However, Spencer’s ultimate analysis is that Aquinas did not have a well-developed theory of analogy of his own. Instead, he asserts, it has been the followers and interpreters of Aquinas who made a “Thomistic” theory of analogy, based around the analogy of being. Because these theories ultimately depend on an Aristotelian foundation, they, too, are found to be ultimately inadequate. After all, if we are unable to reference God’s being in any direct way, then it is difficult to see how creatures totally unlike the divine can have an analogue of that divine. Spencer’s analysis in this section is thorough and fairly convincing.Karl Barth and Eberhard Jungel are the next thinkers addressed, and they provide a basis for Spencer’s own theory of analogy, which is Christological. I’m summarizing an extraordinarily detailed theory here, so I’m sure I’m not adequately outlining it, but the basic thought is that because God has come to us, that allows us through divine revelation of Christ to refer to God. Thus, analogy is the analogy of faith rather than an analogy of being–one in which God has condescended to allow reference to the divine being in human language, rather than one in which we are able to, by our own thinking, come to language which speaks of God.Upon reading Spencer’s analysis and arguments, I am fairly convinced that he is correct in his notion that the analogy of being is insufficient to capture the possibility of talk about God. What I do wonder, however, is whether Spencer (and most others) too quickly dismiss the possibility of univocal language about God. It seems to me that if we are to say “God is love” then we must have some sense in which that actually relates to God. To be fair, Spencer could respond by pointing to such a statement as exactly in concord with his theory, which would assert that it does relate to God because God has revealed the divine nature to us in Christ and God’s Word, thus allowing us to rightly say “God is love.” However, I think that a deeper treatment of the possibility of univocal language related to God talk would have been appreciated in a book like this. Though, admittedly, the book is already lengthy and is specifically focused on analogy, not the possibility of univocity or equivocal language. One minor complaint I have is that in the thoroughness of the book, it seems that Spencer is sometimes repetitive. He hits the same point from several different angles in the same chapter, to the point that the book can become quite dry at times. However, the subject matter itself is deeply intriguing, and his full treatment of the topic makes it hard to fault him for stating a few things more than once. Those interested in reading a dense book of philosophical theology should look no further than The Analogy of Faith by Archie Spencer. It is a deep work that demands much reflection and consideration. It is the kind of seminal writing to which one will constantly return as one thinks about the topic discussed. I can say that I learned a great deal from the book, and had my mind stretched as it hasn’t been stretched in some time. I recommend it highly. The Good+Deep analysis of key concepts related to analogy+Many avenues for further research+Workable theory which offers some resolutionThe Bad-A bit too verbose at times-Dismisses univocity a bit too quicklyDisclaimer: I received a review copy of the book from the publisher. I was not required to provide any specific kind of feedback whatsoever.

Pate In The Analogy of Faith, theologian Archie J. Spencer discusses the question of whether humans can “speak meaningfully of God” (to quote from the back cover).According to Spencer, a prominent trend in the history of Christian theology has been to say that humans can understand God, on some level, because God is like humans, in certain areas, and there is something within or about humans that helps them to understand God: both have being (existence), both have wisdom, etc. As Spencer narrates, Augustine went the route of saying that humans have a soul that is like the Trinity, and that enables them to understand the Trinitarian God, on some level. Spencer contends that some of the roots of the idea of divine-human analogy go back to Greek philosophy and Neoplatonism, but he also refers to Scriptures that adherents of this view have relied on: Genesis 1:27’s statement that God created human beings in God’s image, and Paul’s statement in Romans 1:20 that aspects of God are understood by the things that are made. Spencer believes that there are many problems with the divine-human analogy: that it can conceptually bring God down to the human level, that it can conceptually elevate humans to the divine level, that nature by itself does not provide a clear portrait of God but requires the drawing of conclusions, and that a focus on nature detracts from God’s revelation through Christ. Spencer offered other reasons within his discussion, reasons that were rather abstract and philosophical. At the same time, there has been within the history of Christian theology another belief: that God is radically different from human beings, and that God is incomprehensible to them. Such a belief does not reduce God, but a concern one may have, Spencer notes, is that it can make God overly transcendent and actually be conducive to atheism. What can one do in reference to a God of whom one cannot meaningfully speak, because this God cannot be understood?Drawing on Karl Barth, Eberhard Jungel, and other theologians, Spencer believes that a solution to the theological difficulty of knowing God is to focus on the incarnation: God’s self-revelation of Godself in Jesus Christ. John 1:18 affirms that Jesus Christ has made God known. Spencer refers to other ideas as well: that God can make use of human words to make Godself known, and that God can be known through the drama of God’s acts and people’s testimony to those acts.I do not recall Spencer proposing or referring to a proper way to interpret Romans 1:20 (proper in light of his beliefs about natural theology and preference for looking to the incarnation as God’s revelation). He did, however, refer to a point that Karl Barth made in reference to Genesis 1:27: that God’s image can be defaced in human beings, but is truly manifest in the person of Jesus Christ. Barth saw Genesis 1:27 through the lens of the incarnation.Spencer’s discussion raises questions in my mind. Did Jesus Christ truly reveal God as God is, since God is above and beyond human beings? In what sense did Jesus reveal God? Did Jesus reveal what God wants us to know about him, and yet we should remember that there is so much more about God? My hunch is that Spencer would answer “yes” to the third question.Do we need to choose between natural theology and specially revealed theology? Can we have both? The believers in natural theology whom Spencer profiles did not think that we should just go with natural theology and dismiss God’s special revelation or supernatural intervention (i.e., the incarnation, Scripture, supernatural grace). Were they inconsistent to believe in natural theology and special revelation at the same time, or did they acknowledge that natural theology, though useful, is still limited and inadequate for knowing God?The asset to Spencer’s book is that is does provide a history of the concept of analogy, as it looks at Plato, Aristotle, the Neoplatonists, Augustine, and others. My problem with the book was that it was difficult to read: it was highly abstract, and Spencer could have done a better job in breaking down the concepts. I understand and appreciate that Spencer is contributing to a specific academic discussion and may not be writing for a popular audience; still, there are theological books that IVP Academic has published, including one in the Strategic Initiatives in Evangelical Theology series (of which this book was a part), that are much more lucid. And yet, Spencer’s book does give an impression of being deep, and I am tempted to revisit it sometime in the future, in hope that I will understand it better.Spencer’s discussion did make me more sensitive to the issue of natural theology and special revelation. After reading Spencer’s book, I came across a blog post by Bobby Grow about natural theology (https://growrag.wordpress.com/2015/10/16/the-three-forms-of-natural-theology-for-the-post-reformed-orthodox-and-even-evangelicals/), and I appreciated one of Grow’s points about why he (Grow) and Barth have issues with it: when we combine special revelation with natural theology, we are essentially combining special revelation with our own subjective inferences from nature, as opposed to allowing God to confront us through Christ and Scripture. Barth pointed to the Nazis as an example of how natural theology can lead to problems. I like many of Grow’s posts, but I especially appreciated this post because of the reflection that Spencer’s book inspired within me.I received a complimentary review copy of this book from Intervarsity Press, in exchange for an honest review.

I am not saying the content of this book does not have merit, but I want potential readers of this book to be aware. This book is not a readable text for the general academic reader. It is HIGHLY specialized in subject matter, namely, Abstract philosophical theology with topic that revolves around the ontological metaphysics of the analogy of being and analogy of faith. Unless, the reader has a great amount of experience in reading the likes of Milbank, whose work is almost incomprehensible to most adept readers, this book will be of little interest. The is a book in which is the author and only a handful of people will benefit. It is not an introductory text by any stretch of the imagination. It is not worth the significant effort to read it unless you are research this particular subject area. This book has the wrong publisher and I cannot imagine it will sell well because of its very limited audience appeal. This is a book for a publisher like Brill of Eisenbrauns, but not Intervarsity. I am also not sure why it is a strategic initiative in evangelical theology because the subject matter is so obtuse that may only represent 1 percent of the evangelical theological readership. A book that cannot be understood by a general theological and philosophically educated audience does not represent good theology or philosophy.
