[Read by Derek Perkins] The Blue Flower is set in the age of Goethe, in the small towns and great universities of late eighteenth-century Germany. It tells the true story of Friedrich von Hardenberg, a passionate, impetuous student of philosophy who will later gain fame as the romantic poet Novalis. Fritz seeks his father's permission to wed his ''heart's heart,'' his ''spirit's guide'' -- a plain, simple child named Sophie von Kühn. It is an attachment that shocks his family and friends. Their brilliant young Fritz, betrothed to a twelve-year-old dullard? How can this be? The irrationality of love, the transfiguration of the commonplace, the clarity of purpose that comes with knowing one's own fate -- these are the themes of this beguiling novel, themes treated with a mix of wit, grace, and mischievous humor.

The Blue Flower, by Penelope Fitzgerald

Amazon.com Review Penelope Fitzgerald wrote her first novel 20 years ago, at the age of 59. Since then, she's written eight more, three of which have been short-listed for England's prestigious Booker Prize, and one of which, Offshore, won. Now she's back with her tenth and best book so far, The Blue Flower. This is the story of Friedrich von Hardenberg--Fritz, to his intimates--a young man of the late 18th century who is destined to become one of Germany's great romantic poets. In just over 200 pages, Fitzgerald creates a complete world of family, friends and lovers, but also an exhilarating evocation of the romantic era in all its political turmoil, intellectual voracity, and moral ambiguity. A profound exploration of genius, The Blue Flower is also a charming, wry, and witty look at domestic life. Fritz's family--his eccentric father and high-strung mother; his loving sister, Sidonie; and brothers Erasmus, Karl, and the preternaturally intelligent baby of the family, referred to always as the Bernhard--are limned in deft, sure strokes, and it is in his interactions with them that the ephemeral quality of genius becomes most tangible. Even his unlikely love affair with young Sophie von Kühn makes perfect sense as Penelope Fitzgerald imagines it.

The Blue Flower is a magical book--funny, sad, and deeply moving. In Fritz Fitzgerald has discovered a perfect character through whom to explore the meaning of love, poetry, life, and loss. In The Blue Flower readers will find a work of fine prose, fierce intelligence, and perceptive characterization.

From Library Journal Fitzgerald never repeats herself, and her latest novel, named Book of the Year by 19 British newspapers in 1995, is her most original book yet. Here she reconstructs the life of 18th-century German romantic poet Novalis, focusing on his boisterous family, his struggle to articulate his longings, and, most tellingly, his passion for 12-year-old Sophie, a simple child he intends to marry despite the furious reservations of family and friends. Fitzgerald doesn't make it entirely clear what draws Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis's real name) to little Sophie?but that is precisely the point. Throughout, he is carried aloft by an inchoate desire for something beyond that is summed up in his little story of the blue flower: "I have no craving to be rich, but I long to see the blue flower....I can imagine and think about nothing else." As a counterpoint to her protagonist's beautifully captured romanticism, Fitzgerald successfully evokes the sights, sound, and smells?and the constant sorrows?of domestic life in 18th-century Germany. A little treasure; highly recommended.?Barbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews The German poet Novalis (17721801) was really Friedrich Leopold von Hardenberg: and Fitzgerald (The Gates of Angels, 1992; Offshore, 1987, etc.) here re-creates him, his family, his doomed young lover Sophie von Kuhn, and Sophie's huge family--not to mention the era all of them lived in--in the most human-sized and yet intellectually capacious narrative a reader could wish for. Times were once better for the Hardenbergs, who've sold two estates, may have to sell another, and meanwhile live in a more manageable house in town. The pious and old (he's 56) father of the many-childrened family is Director of the Salt Mining Administration of Saxony, one of the few vocations (the military is another) not forbidden to members of the aristocracy, and the same calling the oldest Hardenberg son, Fritz, will follow upon conclusion of his studies at the universities of Jena, Leipzig, and Wittenberg. To say he's a salt inspector, though, is a little like saying Shakespeare was an actor. Not only have Fritz's studies brought him among faculty the likes of Fichte, Schiller, and Schlegel--but he himself is already a visionary poet helping bring the 18th century to its close (`` `The universe, after all, is within us. The way leads inwards, always inwards' ''). What transpires, then, in the inward universe, when Fritz first sees 12-year- old Sophie von Khn standing at a window looking out? Says he: `` `Something happened to me.' '' This cheerful, careless, laughing child-woman becomes Fritz's star, his guide, ``his Philosophy.'' Against all precedent (Sophie isn't of the real nobility), and in keeping with the changing times (there's been the revolution in France), he gets his father's permission to become engaged--but dreadful sorrow lies just ahead. A historical novel that's touching, funny, unflinchingly tragic, and at the same time uncompromising in its accuracy, learning, and detail: a book that brings its subject entirely alive, almost nothing seeming beyond its grasp. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Not For Every Taste By Paul Frandano Cutting straight to the chase after reading the very polarized views of other reviewers: Although Penelope Fitzgerald's slender novel contains much to admire, it is most certainly not composed to be a popular entertainment, and its successes will appeal more to admirers of "literary fiction"--and, hence, to "critics"--than perhaps to the general reader. Fitzgerald presumes the reader knows something, and cares, about the late 18th Century context; she hopes we might be stimulated by imagining contemporaries of Fichte and Kant discussing their ideas; she presumes that, to us, "romanticism" is more than a word or a line from Shelly and that, by recovering, or compiling, everyday details from a time and world long lost, she can help us understand the romantic sensibility and, ultimately, Hardenberg's--and our--ambiguous longing for "the Blue Flower."I particularly enjoyed Fitzgerald's vignette approach--55 short chapters, each of which is a set piece, generally with a wry punchline--which allows Fitzgerald to view Friedrich von Hardenberg's improbable romance at odd angles. I for one marvel at this choice of subject, a decision by a professional author as seemingly improbable and hopelessly romantic as the subject itself. And yet, despite the author's absolute mastery of her material, her strong cast of winning characters, and the wonderful--although irretrievably high-brow--sense of humor suffusing the entire narrative, I never felt myself emotionally drawn in. One reads on because each page is delightful, and, for many readers (obviously, me included) this is sufficient. But on the basis of slender narrative evidence, we are expected to understand, rather than led toward empathy with, Hardenberg and his inconceivable attachment. Perhaps Fitzgerald's plan was, in writing the simplest of love stories, to avoid cluttering the universe with additional examples of cheap sentimentalism, leaving us with a "mystery of love." In different hands, the novel clearly might have become just that--dismissively sentimental. Instead, she goes the other way: Fitzgerald is a cool observer keenly attuned, in a very modern sense, to the ironies her story poses, but she never truly enages our hearts.

By Ricardo Ramos This is the most likable of the four PF novels I've read (I admire all of them). Her ability to create characters with extreme economy is breath-taking. Even more than in _Blue Flower_, she illuminates a milieu distant and time and space, the Moscow of a British businessman in Moscow ca. 1913 (i.e., on the verge of the First World War, the Bolshevik revolution further off). I don't really know that there were households or businesses like those she brings to life. If the concrete details are imagined rather than researched, her accomplishment is even greater, but it is also considerable if she has "merely" brought back to life vanished Russian and expatrate English ways of being. One of Fitzgerald's many gifts is creating prematurely wise prepubescent female characters (as in _The Bookshop_ and _Offshore_) who view the fumblings of adults with clear-eyed but mostly gracious bemusement and fitfully attempt to keep the adults from totally mucking up. Dolly takes that role here. The omniscient narrator has her own compassionate bemusement at the frailities of adults who want to be loved and try to be useful to others. Frank and Selwyn are prime examples from this book. As far as I can tell, the only thing Ms. Fitzgerald can't do is create rounded prepubescent male characters (Ben here).

As a matter of fact the book is patterned on Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther" which sparked the German Romantic movement and in fact was blamed for the suicide of many of its readers. In the melancholy loneliness of union with the non-personal deity, nature, there is no difference between life and death. Suicide is embraced as a melding with nature- the Bernhard walks into the water and both he and Fritz want to die. In the 18th c. due in large part to the success of Newton and other scientists, non-personal nature had started to replace the personal God. The philosophy of science derives from British empiricism - nothing can be known except through experience and all knowledge must be tested against the individual entity. Novalis and the German Romantics objected to the resulting mechanical image of the world brought on by science. They were steeped in and shaped by the philosophy of the great German thinker, Kant, who wrote in response to the Scottish empiricist, Hume. Kant proposes that our minds and our knowledge of the external world are not separate things but are one, turning the emphasis away from the reality of the objective external entity. For Kant our knowledge of the world reflects more about the structure of the mind than it tells us of the outside world, so he speaks of something like sieves in the mind - space/time, cause/effect - which sift our experience and mold our impressions. The subjective, self-conscious becomes the primary source of reality. Followers of Kant like Fichte, who taught Novalis, carried this to the extreme and became pure mentalists. For them reality results from the struggles of the inner self-conscious; the individual entity does not even exist (Kant never went this far). The German Romantics are closely allied to this philosophy in its emphasis on the subjective self-conscious creating reality. But Novalis also criticizes the mentalists for leaving no room for love, emotions, feelings. He sought to harmonize the inner, subjective self-conscious with nature which had become a mechanical clock of mechanical parts. The Romantics felt that primitive man or the child had an immediate relation to nature, a certain oneness, but the 18th c. man of feeling had been alienated from nature. In the tradition of Kant their emphasis was on the inner self-conscious and they turned inward to poetry and music. The Schlegels and Novalis believed that poetry as metaphor created the fantasy and mythology which would rejoin man to nature. Their new image of the world was the organic flower, rather than the machine. They also had a theory of irony whereby they ridiculed common sense and the expected, traditional way of doing things, in an effort to reveal the inadequacy of reality, thus to destroy it and supplant it with their poetic image. This is basically an egotistical philosophy seeking union of the inner self with a nature devoid of person - to find the blue flower one turns away from family and friends and seeks a "blue" (melancholy) union alone with a rarity of nature. Fritz and the Bernhard in the story are unable to love. Fritz does not really love Sophie nor care about her fulfillment. He would keep her a child. There is perhaps a close identity between this Romanticism and the later philosophy of Existentialism, where the non-personlism of nature becomes the "benign indifference of the universe" and there is no meaning to becoming. Sophie is more a heroine, as she begins to grow as a person ( in relation to other persons), then Fritz is a hero. His brother Erasmus seems to break through the stifling pathos of the era, really loves Sophie and finds joy. The names, Erasmus and Bernhard, by evoking historical characters, become symbolically significant to the theme. The story takes place in post Reformation Germany (Fritz's family belong to a Protestan sect) and it is historically Erasmus of Rotterdam who is Luther's intellectual counterpart and who does not break away from the existing church. Erasmus esteems joy and regrets the lack of it in some of the reformers. The Bernhard's name is a combination of his mother's name and his fathers's. His mother's name Bernardine is ridiculed by the father. St. Bernard from the Middle Ages spoke of each believer having a mystical experience with the personal God. This mysticism is rejected by some of the Protestant reformers. The Bernhard achieves a kind of melancholic, mystical union with the non-personal nature-deity. Fritz' friend, the young doctor Dietmahler, muses that he can save himself by going to Britain. Philosophically England offers him an esape from those who would deny reality (or the existence of the external individual entity in favor of the primacy of the inner self-conscious). In the British empiricism of Hume and Locke, knowledge comes from the interaction with the physical world, where the individual entity really exists. Experiential konwledge implies growth, and imparts meaning to becoming. Tangentially with this appeal to the Empiricist school I think the author may have been commenting on the indifference to cruelty which could coexist with the mentalists like Fichte and the German romantics, who would deny the reality of the individual entity. For Fritz the individual entity and hence the differences between entitiies is not real. Fritz searches for a unit that could be used to measure the physical as well as the spiritual. This unit where both dimensions subsist is the individual person, who by definition can only exist in relation to others. The Romantic sees eveerything melding into the non-personal, non-differentiated, soup of nature, hence Fritz' constant assertion, "all is one." With the reality of the person denied, the opposition to cruelty diminishes. Perhaps the history of philosophy brings us to the choice of personal or non-personal ideal, even personal or non-personal God.

Review "It's a powerful glimpse into one woman's quest for happiness. Robyn will yank on your heartstrings one moment and then tickle your funny bone the next. Hang on for the ride!"     -Alex J. Cavanaugh, Author of the best-selling Cassa series and Dragon of the Stars"I was so moved by her writing, I shared it with my husband. He was so deeply touched, he was unable to speak for a long time. He took what Robyn wrote to heart and made the changes that needed to be made...The transformation has been amazing." -Elsie Amata, Blogger, Mock Turtle Musings"Woman on the Verge is clever, sarcastic, and darkly funny, but above that, it's heartfelt. It's a refreshingly honest look at the mythical fairytale romance, and if it doesn't tug on your heartstrings or make you laugh out loud then you clearly do not have a human soul."         -Bryan Pedas, Blogger, A Beer for the Shower

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Confident and Strong Things Come in Small Packages By Joanne Ms. Engel is definitely on the verge of paradise as she unapologetically journeys her way through life, death, love and chocolate. It's hilarious one minute, then gut wrenchingly sad the next. Her writing style draws you in immediately, and you can't help but continue for another chapter, then another, then another. . . and so the vicious cycle. Her story is essentially one of an unsure little girl, not really knowing her place in her own family's dynamics, and, hence, not knowing her place in life. She battles with first crushes, first loves, friends, death, personal demons, dating (which provides a hilarious point of view into online dating), marriage, divorce . . . the whole gamut. You feel a sort of camaraderie with Ms. Engel because you realize, yes, you've been through, or are going through, some of the same things in your life. You can't help but root for her, to let her know everything's gonna be okay, and that whatever doesn't kill ya will make you stronger. Spoiler alert: she comes out just fine in the end, battle scars and all. She may be small in stature, but her roar, towards the end of the book, is strong and confident.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Clever, heartfelt, and darkly funny By Knox Kingston Woman on the Verge is a story that I think we all can relate to in some way or another - not quite fitting in, wondering about our place in this world, and questioning if happiness really is just right around the corner. This is deep stuff for a humor novel, but don't let that fool you, because it is laugh out loud funny. It just makes you think and gives you something to feel while you're laughing.Woman on the Verge is love, loss, and everything in between as told by someone who may not quite realize how strong and resilient she is. But that's the charm, because Engel doesn't make herself out to be the heroine. On the exterior, she's an ordinary person fighting through the perils of life and questioning the "happily ever after" our fairy tales have promised us, but the way she faces these issues and comes to accept her own life is what makes her and her story anything but ordinary.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Laughing Through the Tears By Susan Flett Swiderski What can I say? The author of this book is tough and tenacious, with a never-give-up attitude. Years ago, our kids had inflatable punching toys that kinda looked like Bozo the clown. No matter how hard or fast the kids bopped Bozo and toppled him over, he'd immediately pop back up again, still starry-eyed, and still smiling.Well, Robyn bounces back kinda like that, too, and though life has delivered her more than a few sucker punches, she's still wearing a smile. And better yet, her sense of humor allows us to smile along with her. But alas, this little human dynamo no longer has stars in her eyes. She stopped believing in fairy tales a long time ago, and no longer expects Prince Charming to come charging up on a white horse to sweep her off her feel and gallop off into the sunset with her to live happily ever after. Now, if some handsome dude came charging up to her on a horse, she'd probably expect said horse to poop on her feet.Yes, she's had her share of disappointments and heartbreaks, and so far, none of the frogs she's met through online dating has turned into a prince. Or even a normal guy. But her adventures and misadventures do make for some entertaining reading. She may break your heart a little, but she'll also make you laugh. A painful thirteen-month marriage, and years of hopeful searching for That Special Someone have taught her that happiness isn't a gift someone else can give her; she has to find it within herself. A gal like this definitely deserves her happily ever after, and I hope she finds it. I want her to find that paradise.Four and a half stars, rounded up to five.

These characteristics define his interaction with others, whether he is addressing sports-ministry leaders at a Chaplains Roundtable Conference, on-the-air with Sports Spectrum Radio, or working with young people. Through Strive, you will benefit from his approach to the challenges of life, which is rooted in his deep love for Christ and desire for others to know God for themselves."  -Bill Houston, Lead Producer and Co-Host of Sports Spectrum Radio    "A beautifully written, incredibly positive, addictive guide, packed with valuable insights that will help you on your life journey―one step, one week at a time. I found myself learning and inspired to become a better person with each passing entry."  -Adrian Gostick, New York Times Bestselling Author of All In and What Motivates Me

About the Author From the earliest days, Tim Hiller's story has always consisted of three things: A boy, a ball, and a dream. The boy with a ball began chasing his dream by dodging imaginary defenders in his parents' backyard and cutting out pictures from Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine. The pursuit of his dream continued through the ranks and record books of the Orrville High School and Western Michigan University football programs, where Tim re-wrote the standards in virtually every major passing category. And his dream culminated in the National Football League, where Tim spent time with four teams, primarily the Indianapolis Colts.   Today, Tim Hiller uses the platform of his celebrated football career to serve others―sharing his faith and experiences through speaking, writing, and his work with student-athletes―leaving a lasting impact on all who hear his powerful message. Hiller and his wife Michelle and son Daniel reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he is employed by Stryker Corporation and is co-owner of Next Level Performance, LLC, which delivers sport-specific training with a primary focus on leadership and character development.

By Fellow Author I'm quoted above, but I wanted to add a few thoughts about "Strive." I'm asked to write endorsements now and then, and after reading a few pages of most new authors I politely decline. But Tim's book won me over. Not only is he a terrific writer, but the way the book is organized makes it a weekly guide to become a better person. It's useable and practical, as well as interesting and funny and thought-provoking. I highly recommend it.

I had an understanding that this book was structured as a weekly devotional but was prompted to read a little before introducing to the family. I couldn't put this book down and I'm operating on 3 hours sleep this morning! The reading was clear, concise, and Tim did a wonderful job of taking everyday life experiences and weaving them together eloquently with bible verses. The calls to action at the end of each chapter are something I look to delve into as this is introduced to the family for an additional weekly devotional to work hand-in-hand with our daily devotionals. I was so moved by this book that I ordered 10 this morning and sent them out to my "pulse-taker" friends. Thank you Tim for sharing your amazing gift.

He is astute at real talk from real life experience that readers easily resonate with. The 52 week format is perfect for those with New Year's resolutions but like me, I'm afraid some readers will peek ahead for enlightenment! This is a good man with a practical story. He is a humble man of faith who handles life's adversity with integrity. This is a must read for every person who struggles with making choices that have lasting impact. Read this book in 2016!

While fictional, it speaks to real life scenerios and hardships. My favorite part of this story was the revelation that God had allowed all these things to take place so that Nola could learn, grow and be prepared for the "greater" that God was preparing for her.I am so proud of my Soror finally sharing her God given gift with the world! This is not only a good story to read. It also shares many life lessons and attests to the true nature of sisterhood. Sororities are not about status, we are about love!Congrats on your first novel sis, can't wait for the next one.

Everything flows By Brittanie S I JUST received my book today, and I can't make this up: I.CANT.PUT.IT.DOWN!!I DEFINITELY underestimated this novel. Being a writer myself, it's so hard to find a "Cant Put Down."I for SURE I'll be done by tomorrow, but I couldn't wait to FIVE STAR this great read. Everything flows, and easy to read. I've laughed even. You know those kinds of books where you get so wrapped up in it that you talk back to it?...Yeah. YES!I'm definitely looking forward to some more work from Ms. Jerre.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wow! By Amazon Customer This was definitely an interesting read. Nola is something else but regardless if you loved or hated her, you could see that God was trying to work in her. Nola's false sense of purpose was completely relatable in that she was just seeking comfort and love in the wrong places. I'm curious to see how her story will continue but knowing her, there will never be a dull moment in Nola's life.

Another year has passed, and, well...everything is the same! Honestly, I have to say that it's been the same for years. I've had a few new relationships, but really it's the same relationship with new names and faces. I'm so tired of this, but there's nothing I can do! I say "I'm just waiting on the Lord" but I don't know why I should believe that right now. I don't know if God is ever going to change things or if I'm ever going to be happy. I hear all that stuff they say in church - but I never see it! I give up. God is taking too long and I have to do me! Sometimes it can be hard to know if "going through" is really worth the effort! In a combination of bible study, structured teaching, and personal stories, this book examines some of the major ideals motivating our culture, and challenges the reader to align them with the standard of biblical righteousness. Expect to be informed, challenged, and inspired. You can live happily ever after; even when life is no fairytale!  Dallas T Ruffin is a highly sought-after teacher, motivational speaker, consultant, and author. Dallas ministers a powerful message of hope through salvation in and a renewal of the mind through Jesus Christ. She is the founder and CEO of a network of companies and ministries, including: Dream Factory Enterprises, Success Academy, Heaven Bound Ministries, and her present expression Redeeming The Time Life Coaching. Dallas offers dynamic workshops that provoke transformation through the Word of God. Dallas is happily married to her husband Dr. Isaac Ruffin Jr and they have two young daughters.

She writes as though you are sitting in your living room relaxing...perhaps a refreshing lemonade and cookies before you. The information is personal and yet "easy to swallow".. .no condemnation or harshness from Dallas. She's a woman who personally KNOWS what she's talking about! Her book is not by a professional who only knows from reading another person's textbook study; but by a woman who lives what she teaches. So, don't say goodbye to this book ...go through IT!

This book helps to clean your mind from all the junk and lies that the world tells you how to think and have healthy honest relationships with yourself, others, and most importantly God. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how to do God's will according to the word of God.

One effect of severe traumatic violence is that it cuts its victims off from connecting, even with those present in the experience. Perhaps of even greater effect, victims disconnect from themselves-from a conscious monitoring of emotion, reaction, and reality. Solace documents the testimony and memories of seven siblings who grew up as the well-behaved silent children of a well-respected religious family, and looks into the private space of their life long memories as they begin to recreate and redefine the concept of relationships and survival. Colleen Mills' masterful vignetted snap shots of shame will lead you through a maze of tenderness and pain that is difficult to shake.

SOLACE: Something Different In the Memoir Genre By Amazon Customer Short in length but rich in imagery, SOLACE is what you'd get if someone combined the poetic style of Marianne Moore with plot points from, say, FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC. Except, of course--unlike FLOWERS--writer Colleen Mills actually lived through the events she depicts. It's a bold experiment to present a painful memoir detailing child abuse in this manner, and Vine Leaves Press (out of Melbourne, Australia) is to be commended for seeing the potential. Because while SOLACE is no easy read--neither in form nor content--the raw emotion it evokes in the careful reader is well worth the effort it takes.Chief among Mills' skills as a writer is her ability to sum up a larger truth in terse verse. For example, when describing how she and one of her sisters--who shared a "bedroom" in the family basement, by the way--frightened each other by making up stories of monsters under the bed, she slaps the reader back into reality by noting, "This is not real fear. We fear the known" (p. 18).Then, too--as noted--there is Mills' mastery of imagery. "Even now," she writes, "there are poems written in blood beneath our skins. Flesh script, rolled tightly in skin scroll."SOLACE is, indeed, a poem written in blood. It will also get under your skin.

Her courage and strength are inspiring at a time in her life where raw fear and secrecy ruled each day. With tear filled eyes I turned each page hoping against hope that somehow things would get better.Brilliantly written and emotionally powerful. A must read.Jacqueline Young

“Gather ‘round people and you shall hear about a bunch of bullshit that is clear. Of riders and horses and monsters too; your parents lied - they can still get you. Hardly anyone who was there is alive to dispel the rumor, uncover the lies, but there was more than one man who rode that day and more than just Redcoats who got in their way.” Along the way, Longfellow lost something in his translation it seems. Everyone has heard of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. However, they have not heard about them this way! The American founding fathers had a lot more to deal with at the end of the 18th century than tariffs and tea; avoiding hurled trees from Wendigos and gargoyles falling from the sky took a lot of patience. How is Samuel Prescott supposed to hunt the leader of the Rippers when the British keep infringing upon the colonists’ rights?

Well, think again! For this is the story that they DIDN'T teach you at school. The REAL story that lies behind all those boring facts....From as far back as anyone can remember, man has been afraid of the monsters that lie waiting in the dark, hidden in the shadows, poised to strike at the first opportunity. For too long these monsters have been dismissed as simple scary stories, legends with no substance, until now...For as war beckons all across the Americas, both sides find themselves facing a mutual enemy as all sorts of preternatural and supernatural creatures begin emerging to join in with the fighting. Zombies, werewolves and all manner of nasties have come out of the woodwork and soon start frequenting every major battle. It is up to a lone group of Americans, destined to grow up and become legends themselves in time, to stop the tide of these monsters before everything is lost; not just their right to independence and freedom. One man, or what was once a man, is behind the sudden emergence of these creatures but stopping him will be no easy task.....This is a great alternative history parody novel that is both educational as well as humorously funny. The humour here often borders on satire but it is equally slapstick too! Think Robert Rankin mixed with a heady dose of Monty Python and lots of jokes about the french, with a little bit of education in American history thrown in as well, and you are coming close.I was privy to a review copy just prior to release and I found it a sheer delight to read! Pete Clarke is a genius the way he has combined so many elements to make a thoroughly good novel that never disappoints for a second! If you are looking for something completely different then you have found it here! The book is a cracking good read and well worth picking up! You certainly won't read anything else this year quite like it and it offers a very different look to the history you only THINK you know!

By LilyGreenEyes Review first posted on Lily Loves Indie as part of a blog tour where a complimentary ARC was received- http://lilylovesindie.co.uk/?p=457Well hello and welcome to our review of Midnight Riders by Pete Clark. As you can see, we’ve awarded this book 4 stars as we absolutely loved it! I may be English (don’t hold it against me, please) but I have a strange fascination with all things American, especially the history (there’s not a lot of time there but boy have you guys had a lot happen). That being said, it was fabulous to be given the opportunity to review a book which tied two of my greatest passions together, the history of the War of Independence and supernatural creatures! The story has an excellent grasp of the history, and the sarcasm and satirical nature of the humour is fabulous throughout. The history is very well weaved into the story, neither takes precedence which makes it a very interesting read, especially for those of you who are interested by history. The humour, particularly the French bashing, amused me greatly, and the camaraderie between the characters really adds an extra dimension to this. It has brought a very important era of history to life in a way that will interest a new generation of young people – extra kudos for that!Clark has a brilliant, easy to read style to his writing which makes it easy to dip in and out of when you get 5 minutes to read. For me, this is a very important thing in a book as I rarely get time nowadays to read a book in one sitting, and so this was an added bonus for me. I previously mentioned the characters, and I have to say some of them are incredibly hilarious and very well written. Prescott and Boone particularly grabbed my imagination, and Hannah added an excellent dynamic, even if the plot arc with Hannah and Prescott could have been developed a little further (but that’s just me being a little picky).Overall, this was a very enjoyable read which had good pace, developed well and weaved all manner of supernatural creatures into it’s pages. Accurate, and exciting history, manipulated with expertise to add the supernatural element in a very believable and enjoyable way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, or even supernatural books as it’s really fab, I know I’m repeating myself, but honestly, it needs saying! Pete Clark has a very unique style of writing, very similar to my own sense of humour, and I am very much looking forward to reading more from him in the future.

If I don't love them, I don't *read* them. + QUINTESSENCE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS By AntonEgo After reading this book, I am put into an odd sort of happy-satire/euphoric/humorous mood, so I will relay such energies into this review.I can best compare my status with books as that of the food critic in the world renown and acclaimed movie "Ratatouille." A specific scene best spells out the possibly egoistical views of my book "critique" nature.--------------SCENE SNIPPET (WHEN ANTON COMES TO CRITIQUE LINGUINI'S *NEW* RESTAURANT)-------------------Anton Ego: You are Monsieur Linguini?Linguini: Uh, hello.Anton Ego: Pardon me for interrupting your premature celebration, but I thought it only fair to give you a sporting chance as you are new to this game.Linguini: Uh... game?Anton Ego: Yes, and you've been playing without an opponent, which is, as you may have guessed... against the rules.Linguini: [awed] You're... Anton Ego.Anton Ego: [sarcastic] You're slow for someone in the fast lane.Linguini: [a little nervously] And you're... thin, for someone who likes food.[crowd gasps]Anton Ego: I don't *like* food; I LOVE it. If I don't love it, I don't *swallow*.[Linguini swallows nervously]Anton Ego: [turns to leave] I will return tomorrow night with high expectations. Pray you don't disappoint me.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the great Anton has decreed, "I will return....Pray you don't disappoint me." My relationship with books is roughly the same. I have read enough to know my specific 'taste buds', if you will, towards such things. My chase for books worthy of being read is tantamount to how the Wild Coyote chases the Roadrunner or Elmer Fudd chases Bugs Bunny in a multitude of seat-rocking, mind-blowing, heart-wrenching episodes. (Spoiler Alert: Elmer Fudd catches Bugs Bunny in the last episode. Didn't know that? I almost cried when I learned too.)But I digress. My quest has been akin to that of a Knight without a squire. I am left to my own whims and must do the tedious and menial tasks of dismounting from my horse and leading him through the muddy swamps which my future-to-be-but-not-existent squire would've done for me while I stayed atop my great and fierce mount. However, my unorthodox ways of knighthood have given me a set of skills no knight has possibly possessed: the ability to actually ride a horse WHILE being able to do some other cool useful stuff. And by cool and useful stuff, great sires and damsels, I mean being able to sit down and enjoy a damn-freaking book when it deserves it. Period. Comma. Question Mark.I give a book two hours. Sometimes two minutes, sometimes two pages. If I can't be satisfied within such constraints, I, as AntonEgo has said, "DONT READ THEM." Why waste my precious minutes as being the only useful knight out of thousands on such wasteful things? No, no!ALAS! I have made no sense up until now! So listen to me my fellow friends, countrymen, BOOK READERS! I bring word of a book that has conquered the great SCOTTISH ISLES and brought ravage and famine throughout the stratosphere. It has wreaked havoc and left pink flowers in its wake. If you lack the ability to believe my word and call this frothy nonsense, look NO FURTHER! You have before you a person who has read this book. My mind has been enveloped in weird layers of goo and supernaturally historical stuff. Satire has cut to my heart. Humor has left me weeping under the great stake of Prometheus's eternal curse.Of course, we could attribute such conditions to these onions that have seemingly randomly been placed next to me. BUT NO SIRS. NOT HERE, NOT NOW. This book is the manifestation of the words that I have saved my whole life to only use on that which was deserved. On that which elicited feelings of unparalleled bounds. This concoction of words is what can only be called, my lowly compatriots, a "QUINTESSENCE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!"In all honesty. This book is very witty and keeps the reader on his seat throughout. It is what can only be described as an epic humor and wit novel. There are no cheesy moments that make you cringe. Each joke is executed flawlessly. On top of this, there is a history lesson to be learned behind everything. There are subtle inferences used for each person and the book contains many layers of depth under all its good humor and horror.A highly recommended book. Such books are what give me such energies to burst out in random and completely nonsensical monologues as such. Have a good day fair sirs. Have a good day and may the Wendigo be with you. And to answer AntonEgo, you will damn not be disappointed.

The house looked as if she'd brushed it over with a hurried hand. Things were open―drawers, cans, and closets. A pile of newspapers fanned out across the floor by the front door, and still I did not wonder. She must have dropped them as she ran, I thought. My mother was often late. But had I stopped to look, I would have seen the fear in the way the house had settled―a footstool that lay on its side, several books that had fallen from their shelves. When you count back, you can see a story from the end. I like that―the seemingly natural narrative that forms this way. With the end in my hand, the story becomes mine. I can have it all make sense, or I can lose my mind like she lost hers―like I lost her. But I can have my story.

Walking the Night Road speaks to the experience of caring for a loved one with a terminal illness and the difficulties of encountering death. Alexandra Butler, daughter of the Pulitzer Prize–winning gerontologist Robert N. Butler and respected social worker and psychotherapist Myrna Lewis, composes a lyrical yet unsparing portrait of caring for her mother during her sudden, quick decline from brain cancer. Her rich account shares the strains of caregiving on both the provider and the person receiving care and recognizes the personal and professional sacrifices caregivers must make to fulfill the role.

More than a memoir of dying and grief, Butler's account also tests many of the theories her parents pioneered in their work on healthy aging. Authors of such seminal works as Love and Sex After Sixty, Butler's parents were forced to rethink many of the tenets they lived by while Myrna was incapacitated, and Butler's father found himself relying heavily on his daughter to provide his wife's care. Butler's poignant and unflinching story is therefore a rare examination of the intimate aspects of aging and death experienced by practitioners who suddenly find themselves in the difficult position of the clients they once treated.

Walking the Night Road: Coming of Age in Grief, by Alexandra Butler

    Review

Alexandra Butler's account of her parents' deaths is engaging and affecting. Boomers and their children will learn much from this memoir as they themselves approach the finitude of life.

(Andrew Achenbaum, Professor of Social Work at the University of Houston)

An honest look at marriage, aging, happiness, and survival―both wise and funny. You will walk the Night Road too.

    (Barbara Walters)

A detailed, beautifully written, insightful account of the process of dying and of living―it's difficult to put down. Butler is able to use her words to breathe life into the people she is writing about and provide the reader with an ability to enter their lives as observers who can nearly feel the sun, shudder in the cold, and hear the creak of the floors.

(Jeanette Takamura, Dean, Columbia School of Social Work)

This book is Ms. Butler's passionate account of her fight to help her mother, the author of works on mental health and aging, Myrna Lewis, in her battle against a malignant brain tumor. The depth of her grief and her fury against a foe she knew must win is palpable on every page.

(Peter Pouncey, Author of Rules for Old Men Waiting)

Alexandra Butler's memoir of the last year-and-a-half of her mother's life is a searing, exquisitely written, brilliant work. Its honesty, insight, and poetic sensitivity left us deeply moved, far more so than anything else we've read in many years. It is truly a magnificent accomplishment.

(Lawrence K. Grossman, Former president of NBC News and PBS)

I read this book in one sitting last night and it is really remarkable. She captures, a la Virginia Woolf, the inner voice and experience of illness, death and grief in a way I have not seen before. Lots of talent there.

(Diane Meier, Director of Center to Advance Palliative Care)

The vivid, expressive intelligence of the writing made the exploding consequences of Myrna's cancer invade my mind in ways that were deeply moving and instructive. I was struck by the author's skill as a writer from the devastating start of the book, in which Myrna has already crossed the threshold into a world from which she can't return. It reads like a nightmare at first, but then settles into the pit of the stomach as not nightmare at all, not even the cultural nightmare of cancer as dread incarnate, but as our everyday, waking reality transformed into a bizarre parallel universe. Butler has composed a particular and telling vignette with implications beyond her immediate circumstances―a tragi-comic subtext to the way many of us are driven to organize our lives in unbroken chains of projects.

(Joan Retallack, John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Humanities, Bard College)

I read it in one sitting. I laughed; I cried my eyes out; I related the whole way. And the beauty of it is that my mother does not have cancer. No one has cancer. It's the relationship and the feelings, deep to the core. This is not about cancer. It's about people, about the relationship between the people and the journey. I bet that people will relate no matter what kind of death or loss.

(Joan Siffert, Senior Vice President of Development at Gilda's Club)

    Beautifully and skillfully written.

    (Rabbi Harold S. Kushner)

Beautiful, heartbreaking and incisive, Butler's memoir is a brutally honest retelling of her mother's tragic battle against cancer. Her words go beyond just grief, they inspire a greater understanding of what it means to be a child, and how the lines that define familial roles are often more complex and messy than they seem. A child is never just a child. A parent never just a parent. Walking the Night Road is a cathartic tribute to anyone who has ever lost a parent.

    (Will Reiser, Screenwriter, 50/50)

Butler has written a moving and powerful book about the unlikely blessings that a death can bring. Anyone who has lost a loved one―or indeed anyone who has unwillingly embarked on an adventure only to find themselves in a better place―will enjoy this account. She reminds us all that hardships can sometimes be gifts wrapped in pain. We just need to see them that way.

(Dan Buettner, Author, The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People )

Butler gives an exceptionally full-bodied description of family life, with its enduring connections, weaknesses, cruelties and warmth.

    (Terri Apter Times Literary Supplement)

Very well written, organized and presented, Walking the Night Road is... extraordinary and highly recommended.

    (The Midwest Book Review)

Its main focus is the author's grief while her mother is dying of brain cancer and in the wake of both her parents' deaths. However, the book also illuminates Butler's passage into maturity, which means developing her own understanding of her parents as opposed to living within the perspective of her mother, with whom she had a symbiotic relationship. Ultimately, Butler develops the ability to appraise and celebrate her parents' humanity instead of placing one or the other on a pedestal. This allows her enough distance to render her parents--their lives and deaths--and her own inner landscape clearly and artfully. While the narrative is personal and highly specific it offers tremendous insight into the grieving process--a nearly universal experience at its core.Butler's prose are lyrical and poetic but also economical. (I'm excited to read her poetry as well!) Writing about illness and death can so easily become leaden; however, while this books is devastating at times, there is levity and beauty in its pages. I absolutely recommend Walking the Night Road, especially for those who are grappling with loss. Butler's willingness to expose the complexity of her own grief and her compassion (for herself and others) are her greatest gifts to her readers. I am grateful to have received them.

Alexandra Butler lost both of her parents from disease in a span of a few years, and writes about her parents and her grief for them in her memoir, "Walking the Night Road: Coming of Age in Grief". It's a fairly interesting book, but rather awkwardly written.Alexandra's parents - Dr Robert Butler and Dr Myrna Lewis - were leaders in the field of aging and the final days of life. Lewis was Butler's second wife - he had three daughters from his first marriage - and their daughter, Alexandra, was a "late-in-life" baby. She grew up in the midst of both her parents work and their lives together. She was much closer to her mother, in whose shadow she grew up. Her relationship with her father was a bit more problematical; he was old enough to be her grandfather and they did not seem to be close until his last illness and death. I caught glimpses of the relationship between Myrna and Bob, but the resentment Myrna showed Bob was difficult to construct other than seeming to be resentment at his greater fame in their chosen work and detachment from his home life.Alexandra Butler was in her mid-twenties when her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She lived with her parents and was her mother's main help until a nurse - also named "Myrna" - was hired to take over her care. After her mother's death, Alexandra went through a protracted mourning period where it seems she both mourned and tried to figure out her mother's life and her place in it. Then her father became sick with a form of leukemia and died. Losing two parents is difficult enough without having a strong personal identity to help sustain yourself. Now maybe "personal identity" is important here. In the book, I never really figured out just "who" Alexandra Butler was. Yes, "daughter of", and "half-sister of", and, eventually, "wife and mother of", but in the book she seems so non-existent in her own right. After receiving a diagnosis of depression, she began taking Zoloft, which seemed to help her.Butler's writing is stream-of-conscience and it is not tightly written. Maybe memoir writers are allowed a bit of bit of wavering in their writing; after all, they're writing about their emotions. But Butler's book is too wandering. Maybe a lot of it should have remained within the confines of a therapist's office.I had high hopes for the book after reading an excerpt from it in the New York Times last week. However, this book - and the subject - are highly personal and other readers may enjoy it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Reading this book was a powerful experience. By Callie Thompson I found this book to be vital. A beautifully written, tightly-paced book that I couldn't put down. It brought me so completely into her world that I felt I was able to experience with her what it feels like to lose a parent. After reading the book, I was moved to stay more connected to both of my parents, a gift from the book that I didn't expect. Thank you to the author for being so vulnerable and having the graceful ability to write about this experience in a way that was simultaneously accessible and also transformative. I'm grateful to have read this and look forward to more from this powerful writer.
