4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Maybe a novella By Kindle Customer Enjoyed this book very much. But when buying the third book I realized that they were all under 100 pages. I have several of Morris' books but I will be looking closer at them before buying from now on. I know he knows how to do a family series without cheapening his self with cliff hangers or in this case 1/2 books. So very disappointed. Also story only covers about 39% of book the rest is excerpts of books he has written.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It is entertaining. By Cogent Matchless Antrax The main character is Ariadne Silver. At first, she live a miserable life. Then there comes a time where she was surprisingly an heir to her grandma's wealth so she went to France to live her life for once. The story has a great plot. The sequence of events are not ambiguous and it is interesting.Lesson learned at the end of the story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Much like a fairytale in real life. By JayCee It all started from a very miserable part of Ariadne Silver, having a drug-addict mother and an absent father. She really live a life without future she hoped for. But then came a sudden twists of her life and that truly change her life "BIG" time. She was a sole heir of her grandmother she never knew existed since then. And after knowing that and eventually she went to France. Her life starts to bloom and she began living a life full of love and happiness. Much like a fairytale in real life.

Provides great depth on a subject many parents take for granted By Erika E When we step back and take a look at many of our societal woes, it's clear we can draw a pretty straight line from the behaviors and actions of many adults back through time to the world they experienced at an early age. George Halvorson provides compelling point after point of the necessity for genuine and consistent interaction with our children from the moment they come into the world. Given our hectic, technology infused lives we live today, this is a great read and reminder of all that's involved in creating and raising a remarkable child equipped to thrive throughout their lives.

By Joe C This book shares such an enlightening perspective of the importance of early childhood education and engagement. It is a must read for anyone who is having a child or who has a small child. If this was given out to all mothers when they left the hospital it would help our country be a better place.

By Amazon Customer Mr. Halvorson eloquently outlines the profound & positive effects that reading, singing, and playing to a child in his/her first 3 months and first 3 years has on later years of life. This book is an essential handbook for all expecting parents and everyone that interacts with young children. Thank you George Halvorson!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Stunning strip reprint! Thanks LOAC! By Diego Cordoba Please bear in mind that this review concerns the recently published (since October 2015), full-color reprint of this strip by the Library Of American Comics, and not the long out-of-print two-volume black and white edition that Blackthorne published in the late 1980s, and that the other reviewers refer to here. I hope Amazon will correct that.OK, once that matter cleared, I will be reviewing this absolutely beautiful book of a long-forgotten strip published between the years 1952-1955 in only one newspaper: the New York Sunday News. If you missed it the first time around, you missed a sci-fi series that was a load of fun, and illustrated in the style of a Caniff strip by one of my favorite artists: Lee Elias. The series was written by sci-fi author Jack Williamson (The Humanoids), and the story tells that he got the gig based on a negative review he got for one of his books. Seems a smart-aleck critic said in the aforementioned review, that his book read like a comic-book (meaning to put down the writer’s work). At the time the newspaper with the world’s largest circulation, the NY Sunday News, like every other paper in America, published a Sunday supplement with comic strips. But the competition was stiff (TV in the foyers among others), so the paper decided to create a series of new strips that would only appear in their Sunday supplement. One of the new strips would have a sci-fi theme, and since Williamson’s work “read like a comic book”, maybe he could create something for them. Williamson came up with the idea of something he called “paragravity”, which “enabled Earth’s spacemen to breathe and live on asteroids”—just beyond Mars (quote taken from the captions of the first couple of weeks by the title). Ultimately, the sci-fi series was the only new original series done for the Sunday News. The artwork was handled by a British expatriate by the name of Lee Elias. Elias had experience in the comic book field, having drawn, among others, Black Cat for Harvey, before they switched over to publishing horror material following the bandwagon led by EC Comics. Dissatisfied with the comic book industry, Elias looked for work elsewhere, and that’s how he got the gig to illustrate Beyond Mars, the new sci-fi strip created for the Sunday News.Elias, like many artists of his generation, drew in a style inspired by Milton Caniff. Actually, Elias was one of the best Caniff imitators. Though his artwork never had the dynamism of Caniff’s, in my opinion he was a better inker. Elias’ inking is sharp and slick, as opposed to Caniff’s that tended to get sloppy with the years.I always liked Elias’ work, though I discovered him for the first time in the Marvel series about Luke Cage, later known as Power Man, and in the Warren magazines, where he drew The Rook in a more photo-realistic style than his previous Caniff-derivative style, adding gray washtones to enhance the realistic quality of his work. He also did the artwork for one of the last attempts by Warren to start a new series and magazine, the short-lived The Goblin, which lasted only 3 issues, probably owed to the dubious language and racist aspect of their main series (but gloriously illustrated by Elias). To my knowledge (meaning I’m pulling this out of the back of my head), Elias’ last work to see print was an unpublished Warren story that saw print many years later in the Marvel magazine Epic Illustrated. I don’t remember the name of the story, but it took place inside a concentration camp during the Second World War, and it featured a father killing his wife and children in there. Naturally, how can you forget something like that? I also spoiled the ending to anyone who hasn’t read that story before.Anyway, that said, Beyond Mars is a fun sci-fi series, not to be taken very seriously. It takes place in the future (22nd century?) where men wear baggy spacesuits, and women still dress in the 1950s fashion, mothers wear aprons and spend their days cooking in the kitchen, and rocket ships are cigar-shaped. It’s also a world were the hero’s best friend is a lisping alien that eats metal and whose body is metallic and looks like a giant earthworm with arms. We also get to meet a boy who travels through space riding on a meteorite, a giant lobster that crawls out of the ocean and is already red, as if it had just gotten out from boiling water and—well, you get the idea. Certainly not to be taken seriously. On the other hand, it’s much fun, and the retro-50s art by Lee Elias is simply gorgeous.A note to lovers and publishers of old newspaper strip reprints: THIS IS THE BEST REPRINT BOOK OF AN OLD NEWSPAPER STRIP I’VE EVER SEEN!!! The restoration by Lorraine Turner is outstanding! The colors are gorgeous, the art is sharp and crisp, and the quality of the book is top notch! Bruce Canwell’s intro is informative and to the point. I’m afraid it can’t get any better than this, friends. The only question is, why is the first page of the strip/series missing? All in all, I can’t stress enough the quality of this book. It’s really stunning, and though I usually grumble when it comes to the restorations of old newspaper strips, this is the best ever! Highly recommended, and a sure winner!PS: Though I know it isn’t the case for this reprint, on the few times I wrote Dean Mullaney, the editor, I asked him to please reprint this strip. He never replied, so I thought I’d never see this book. Now that I have it in my hands, all I can say is thank you, Dean and the rest of the team at LOAC! I love you guys! You made one of my dreams come true!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Comic Strip Adventures from the golden age of future space travel! By ANDY FISH With the exception of the Sam character who "cleverly" talks with a lisp this is a great collection of stories featuring that amazing era when space travel seemed right around the corner. Equal parts Hardy Boys (with only one boy) and Flash Gordon. Be warned, Sam is the Jar Jar Binks of the 1950s.The main reason to buy this is the art by Lee Elias, a true master who seldom got the respect he deserved.Best of all, if you're like me and you find reading comic strip collections difficult because they are so repetitive and the pacing slow, these are collected Sunday strips, so each one is a full page of stunning art and the story moves along at a relatively brisk pace, you'd think you're reading a graphic novel rather than a comic strip collection.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Huge Disapointment! By Rory Coker A huge disappointment, to the extent that I had to force myself to keep reading. What went wrong? Everything. This is one of the rarest of all newspaper comic strips with a science fiction theme, since it appeared in the Sunday Comics section of a single newspaper. I have always wanted to read the complete series, and here it is, beautifully reproduced in full color. No fault is to be found with the reproduction, which is superb. Now for the problems: When hired to write this strip, Jack Williamson, who had grown up in one of the most isolated spots in the US, had never seen a newspaper comic strip of any kind. He was a highly respected science fiction writer, and continued to write excellent novels up to nearly the end of his long life. But in doing this strip, he had two crippling burdens. One was an aggressively meddling editor, who vetoed most of the story lines proposed by Williamson, and at one point actually fired Williamson as scripter and took over the scripting himself, using Williamson only to suggest storylines. When the editor died, Williamson was able to take over scripting again, but not much changed. The other burden was the artist, Lee Elias. Elias is an excellent illustrator, but his 1950s style is a dead-on imitation of 1940s Milton Caniff. So all females are dressed in late 1940s clothing, although the strip is supposed to take place centuries in the future. Male characters dress in what look similar to World War II flight suits. In the very good introduction to this volume, we are told that Elias also vetoed a number of futuristic story lines, claiming that he wouldn't be able to draw the required things! What we are left with are very unimaginative and tedious "adventures" in which the personalityless hero and his caterpillar-like alien sidekick get to do little or nothing. In every storyline the hero is locked up, knocked out, thrown into space in a disabled space suit, etc. Same old same old. The villains are forgettable except for one, a Dragon-Lady-like character , leader of a gang of space pirates, who is revealed to be a female Frankenstein monster made by a mad scientist from the corpse of his wife and various robot parts! Everything about her is interesting, but she is only used once. The final story line treats the total destruction of futuristic New York City by a mad scientist as almost a joke, and ends abruptly with nothing really resolved, as the series was cancelled.I can't say much more about this strip than that it is an unbroken series of tragically missed opportunities.

Although I do not have any children myself, I very much enjoyed reading it, and I can imagine I would use it when my kids would be between the ages 2 and 12 years old; Happy Family Life is packed with tips on how to improve the bond with children. What I liked about the book that you do not need anything special; just use whatever nature offers you, be still, play games and relax. I see so many families around me with children who -I am sure- would greatly benefit from a guide like this.

It's great quality with all the pictures and tips it is really easy and fun to read too. It is kind of spiritual in a sense because it tells all the feelings and why the theory explained is so great. But that is nothing that bothered me. Just a great quality book!

On the 7 September 1940, the London Blitz began in ernest. This was when the Nazi Luftwaffe machine switched from daylight raids on military targets to heavy bomber raids at night focusing on large cities. Miriam’s Family Blitz, already broadly conceived in, Miriam’s War by the same author, places her family’s first fifteen days of the London Blitz under a magnifying glass. A period in which the mundane lives of her close family and friends in the East End found themselves experiencing front-line warfare for the first time, undergoing the inconvenient blackout, general restrictions and rationing. From the family’s once relatively quiet life, and with Miriam, released from Holloway prison only one year previously, the intense and very real fear of invasion, gassing, destruction and death occupies almost their every thought.

Borrowed from library but absolute delighful series to read By Marilyn R The Legacy of Lancaster Trilogy are well written books with a different them for each book. Kate Lloyd has chuosen her characters well and developed them throughout the series. Definitely a series to read. Leaving Lancaster County you'll discover how Esther Gingerich Fisher finally returns to her Amish settlement after being in hiding for 37 years with her daughter, Holly Fisher. Holly had never been told about her Amish family and had been led to believe she didn't have any grandparents after her father was killed in a war. Pennsylvania Patchwork is the continued story about Holly Fisher and how she is drawn to the Amish culture. Forever Amish is the heartwarming story about Sally Bingham and the shocking secret that is revealed when she is in accident that involved a buggy. This series has a wonderful blend of English and Amish characters filled with suspense, romance, faith and emotions that are captivated while reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was studying in preparation to be the best mother I could be By Jennifer When my kids were little, I remember reading every book I could get my hands on about parenting and childcare. In fact, even before they were born, I was studying in preparation to be the best mother I could be. Yes, I was one of those moms-to-be waddling around with headphones on my belly. I think most moms are like that; we want to know what to do to give our children the best start in life. We want our children to have all the things we had, and didn’t have. So, we read and visit and blog and even listen to the advice of older women in the checkout line. We want to know all of the theories out there for giving our child an advantage and a strong foundation for life. The problem is that as our kids get older and move into adulthood, there is very little information out there about how to handle the transition from mother of a child to mother of an adult. Not even the grocery store checkout lines offer the sage advice of nearby observers anymore. It’s tough, and although many of the friends I talk with are struggling with the same issues, we feel isolated and alone in handling them.Fortunately, there are now some experts offering support and guidance for those of us moving into the latter stages of parenting. In their recently published book, Whose Couch Is It Anyway?, Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D. and Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D., beautifully unravel the stories of five unique families going through the natural bumps in the road along the path between family life with children and family life with adult children. The pair has worked in the field of counseling for over 30 years with families of diverse backgrounds and experiences. The book focuses specifically on parenting Millennials, young adults, often called boomerang kids, who come and go from home, as they transition into adulthood.First and foremost, the authors set readers’ minds to rest; we are not alone. Citing a wealth of research, Goldberg and Lichtman summarize the cultural and economic conditions that have led to many families finding themselves in a new paradigm. Our world has changed and in response, so has the family framework. Many parents are left asking where they go from here and how they navigate this world for which they have very little precedent.Goldberg and Lichtman weave guidance and suggestions through the telling of composite stories of families searching for the answers to these same questions. The primary character in each story is a mother but also includes rich character development of connected family members which facilities a full appreciation of the layers and complexities involved in family dynamics. No single reader may find herself completely outlined in any one of the stories but may recognize features of her own struggle within them all.As storytellers, Goldberg and Lichtman succeed in revealing the truth of struggle and growth in a way that offers the practical guidelines of a self-help book but reads like a novel. The stories are interesting and impactful. The depth of detail about each character engenders a personal connection; the reader empathizes with the characters and roots for their success. The advice and suggestions Goldberg and Lichtman offer, through the counsel they offer to clients in each story, is simple and practical. As one couple deals with a middle child returning home just as they think they will be able to start traveling the world, the narrator deftly guides the family though the process of setting boundaries and drawing up a contract to keep interactions between parents and adult child civil and productive. Each family member is given a chance to be heard and is allowed input into determining the new family dynamics. The scenario may be close enough to reality to provide helpful ideas but removed enough to prevent defensiveness or resistance that could prevent growthThrough the diverse make-up of the families in the stories, Goldberg and Lichtman address matters that may relate to some non-traditional families but also connect to issues many families have in common. So, whose couch is it anyway? It’s mine, and, it’s yours. It’s open to the one inclined to listen and stretch and learn and grow.

Warm, thought-provoking stories about relationships across generations By Richard Newman, Ph.D. Each of the book’s five chapters portrays a family scenario involving complex interpersonal relationships. The book’s authors, Phyllis Goldberg and Rosemary Lichtman, are family therapists who deal everyday with such scenarios. Over the years, Goldberg and Lichtman have compiled and condensed “stories” from their vast experience. Here, they share stories and discuss how they’ve personally listened to and counseled family members.Scenarios typically involve a Millennial child (actually an adult) who has returned home to live with a mother (and father). Often there are hassles involving financial and personal matters, intrusiveness, and limit setting. There can be differences between parents’ memories of the millennial when he or she was a “child” and parents’ perceptions of the millennial in the present, as an adult. Likewise, the millennial’s perceptions of present-day parents may not jive with his or her memories of earlier parenting. When millennials are sandwiched between their parents and their own spouses and young children, situations can become complicated and dysfunctional. The book is extremely thought-provoking. It can be useful for training counseling and coaching professionals, and it can be useful for individuals who encounter difficult family situations and scenarios in their personal lives. Different generations “occupying the couch” at different times form the core of real-life dramas---sometimes tragic and sometimes even humorous.

Boomer parents, this one's for you By Liane Kupferberg Carter When your kids are small, there’s a wealth of parenting books available to coach you through developmental issues and milestones. There’s also a veritable cottage industry of books to help you navigate the shoals of adolescence and tackle the transition to post-secondary education. However, despite the fact that there are more than 20 million millennials (adult children ages 18-34) living with their parents, there aren’t too many books to help you parent those adult children who fail to launch.Until now.Whose Couch Is It Anyway? is the joint collaboration of two therapists with more than 30 years of clinical experience helping families. Casting a keen eye on the boomerang generation, Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Lichtman offer compassionate, practical advice via case studies of five composite families so compelling and richly detailed that they read like short stories. Wise, warm, and written in accessible, lively language, this thought-provoking book is essential reading for would-be empty nesters, and the professional coaches and therapists who work with them.

From the Back Cover This is a tale of intrigue, as rapacious schemers try to wrest a fortune out of a mysterious old man who has returned to their midst, and of thwarted love. There is no sentimentality. This is a world in which the strong exercise power against their own kind, scheming and struggling for survival, a world from which, Gissing bleakly maintains, there can be no escape.

George In "The Nether World," Gissing gives you another one of his hard, realistic looks at life in London in Victorian times. This time he focuses on the poorest of the poor in the Clerkenwell area of London. These are people whom England's infantile labor laws generally can't help. If/When they can find work, they often work 16 hours per day all week, and the wages they earn hardly cover rent for a very small room in disreputable housing. It's a world where unwanted children multiply like rabbits, and the death of any family member is usually seen as a relief of one less mouth to feed. For all these reasons, this world - this nether world - is a world about which the upper and middle classes are happily ignorant. Those born into these lowest levels of humanity often rail about the injustice of being born into such circumstances. However, their cries for social reform, their desperate attempts to better themselves, and their pitiful needs for simple pennies are never really heard or understood by those more comfortably off.Within this novel, then, Gissing explores the lives of a range of characters as they deal with being born in the nether world. While he focuses on the heart-warming characters of Jane Snowdon and Sidney Kirkwood, Gissing competently develops the storyline of a large number of other Clerkenwell characters whose lives intertwine with Jane's and Sidney's. In his distinct manner, Gissing is mercilessly honest and yet generally compassionate with the characters whose lives he examines. Thus, he offers a glimpse of the slums - full of love, ambition, corruption, greed, and despair - in a manner that many of us would never know otherwise. Many compare or try to compare this kind of honest look at the rougher side of London with Dickens. However, it is important to note that Dickens tended to idealize poverty and always brought things to a hopeful, positive ending. Gissing does no such thing. Though an educated man, Gissing himself suffered cruelly from poverty and mixed with these classes as he struggled to support himself as an author (see "New Grub Street"). Thus, he has no idealist views of poverty and simplistic lives.Additionally, Gissing has a penchant for realistic storylines. It is unnerving to read his books, actually, because you can't rest on the fact that he will work everything out nicely in the end. In fact, he usually doesn't. He is courageous enough to write true-to-life outcomes to very frustrating, dispiriting circumstances. It is probably why he never became a popular author as readers often want happy endings - with a Ghost of Christmas Past if necessary - in order to relieve their consciences. All in all, another great work by Gissing. He does get a bit preachy (even as he reveals the preachiness of others as futile), but that is easily overlooked. The accurate historical glimpse of London that he gives is invaluable. And I imagine that his brutally honest portrayal of life might speak to the impoverished among us today

Don't buy this edition By Lara I'm not commenting on the novel itself here (although it is an interesting, if problematic, look at London's underworld), but I do want to warn readers against buying this Echo Library edition. There is no contextual material (no intro, afterword, or notes), which would have been useful, but more annoying is the fact that the copy editor for this press appears to have been asleep while editing this edition. There are three or four major typos on every page (glaring typos-- periods in the middle of words, apostrophes instead of commas, mispelled words). Sometimes there are even words missing, which makes the prose difficult to follow. This novel is worth reading, but try to find a different edition.

Schneider Gissing's novel about working class life, bleak and angry, published in 1889, shares a main plot element with Dickens' Great Expectations: an expected inheritance, here from a returner from down-under. There was a trend in Victorian fiction to write about the `condition of England'. Gissing was one of the bleakest contributors: he offered no optimism, no way out, no reason for optimism. His endings were of the kind that we saw recently in the movie Winter's Bone: deceptive little meaningless pseudo triumphs, not more than moments of rest. People don't rise from the nether world. Upper and nether worlds don't have any permeable interfaces.Central hero of this decently depressing master piece is a qualified worker in the jewelry industry, with some lost illusions about talent in art and with a failed young love. While still a young man, `he reached the stage of confident and aspiring radicalism, believing in the perfectibility of man, in human brotherhood, in anything you like that is the outcome of a noble heart sheltered by ignorance'. That stage was gone now, `to give place to nothing very satisfactory'. The man tries to stay decent, to have friendships, to help people worse off than he is himself...Gissing's Pip-equivalent is young Jane, the grandchild of the old man who came back from Ossiland and who is expected to leave something to her. At the outset of the novel she is 13 and she is for all practical purposes a domestic slave in a boarding house, mistreated by a sadistic tyrant of a teenage daughter of the owner. We get to meet rather many un-nice people down here in the nether world. Poverty is not conducive to social graces, and decency is challenged hard under miserable conditions.Gissing was not much of a sympathizer with the 'low classes', nor was he a 'radical', nor was he a modernizer of literature. What he brought to his subject here is detailed knowledge based on own experience as well as on meticulous research. The Oxford World Classics edition that I have gives us excerpts from Gissing's note books in the appendix, where he wrote down the facts of life for use in the book.

In this brave new age of constant sharing, there isn't much that's still taboo. On social media and beyond, we dish on all aspects of our personal lives: our relationships, our children, our sex lives, our health. But there's one thing that no one ever mentions-- our money. How much do we actually have? Who makes it? And how does that make us feel about ourselves? These are the uncomfortable questions that Rachel Shukert managed to avoid for years, buffered from the gnawing anxiety of her patched-together freelance living by the comfortable salary of her loving and successful husband. But when a sudden change in circumstances forced her to step up and start supporting her family for the first time, she had to face the depth of her phobias about money for the first time, and truth about the damage they had caused to her relationship. It wasn't pretty. Plates were thrown. Police were called. Accountants were vomited on -- or at least, near. And a marriage was pushed to the breaking point by the curious power that money -- or the lack of it -- has in our lives. Hilarious, painful, and searingly honest, CRAZY STUPID MONEY tells the hard truth about all the things that married people (not to mention not-quite-successful creative freelancers) never talk about but desperately wish someone would. The story of how one couple broke themselves down and struggled to come back together again, it's an unflinching look at what we talk about when we DON'T talk about money -- and how alone it makes us feel. RACHEL SHUKERT is a television writer living in Los Angeles. She is the author of five books, including the memoir EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE GREAT and the Kindle Single LET ME BE YOUR STAR. (Except this single definitely is, but, you know-- Abba)Longtime fan of Rachel's writing (granted, I'm her target demo to the point of practically being a mirror), and am really taken with how her voice has maintained its consistent zing while grappling with more complex (read: "grown up") issues. (Still plenty of musical theater references, though...never change.)This single was as cathartic to read as it must have been to write: the best weapon we have against the fiscal isolation of the freelance lifestyle is commiseration with fellow laborers (Rachel, would you like to be deemed a modern Emma Goldman? Is it still cool to be a communist?)Absolutely appreciated the unflinching intimacy of the revelations within. A great little nugget of an afternoon read to take your mind off of where your next check is coming from...or at the very least, make you feel that you're not alone in this all-consuming concern.

It was very brave and I have enormous respect for her for doing so. I found the book extremely well written but it was mostly about anxiety, rage, emotional violence, persecution, desperation and a destruction of well being wrapped up in a humorous style of writing. The deeper message was addressing the fear of not surviving and not feeling supported and looked after, which I am sure we all feel at some level. After a while, as I was really getting into the book, it felt as if I was reading about a traumatic, extremely painful experience of overwrought, damaging emotions and a disintegrating marriage rather than a funny, quirky tale. It's a really sad story about one persons fear of not surviving.

It is a taboo that keeps us from being closer to the ones we love. This is a powerful tale about anxiety over money and the fight to maintain a relationship. I could not put it down. It was the perfect book for me right now. Thank you for writing this and making me feel normal.
