The Mail Order Midwife's Secret (Wanted: Wives in the West) (Volume 2), by Trinity Ford

About the Author I'm a Mom to three precious angels, two sons and a daughter. I was born and raised in Ft. Worth, Texas, and reside here to this day. Growing up, I was torn between the choice to pursue a career in professional sports or being an author. Writing won, and when I think about it, there really wasn't any struggle to choose. I love creating worlds and characters my readers can get lost in. The Wanted: Wives in the West series is my first romance series in the western fiction genre, and it stems from stories I've heard about Hell's Half Acre (Ft. Worth, 1880s) and The Harvey Girls - brave pioneer women who helped settle the West by coming here to work for a specific company. This is my twist on those two historical tales.

Malmsio I'm so happy with this series of sweet mail order bride romances ... because when I read them, these enthralling stories make me Happy! Trinity has a style of writing that totally engages me with the characters and their dramas and I find myself spiritually willing a happy outcome for them. A couple of scenes may make you cry for a second or two, but it all ends well and then, just when you think it is reaching "The End" .... you will just love the surprise twist to the story!

Whole-Brain Child Workbook By KarenRachel The Whole-Brain Workbook continues the work done by Daniel Siegel about the impact of parental mental health on a child's development and neurological growth. It is most clearly connected to his book The Whole-Brain Child and gives parents the tools and skills necessary to not only parent more effectively but to help their children grow into emotionally healthy, flexible and happy adults who can sustain intimate connections. This workbook is more useful if you know Daniel Siegel's work and especially if you have read the Whole-Brain Child but it is still possible to do use the workbook productively. I could imagine an individual parent using this workbook yet I think it would be even better to use it with other parents and/or therapist; a chance to discuss the concepts, practice the skills and go deeper into the work. I am so impressed with the parts of the book that show parents how to teach and use the material with their own children. What a gift for a child to be specifically taught about how the brain works and how that impacts them. I also appreciated that there were no specific techniques to use per se (like most parents, I have read many of them without much success) and that parents were steered away from approaches that devalue or minimize children's feelings. I thought the exercises were easily explainable, mostly for a school age child and older, and the drawings made it lively and fun. I can imagine using it with my 10 year old child. Thank you to Edelweiss for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

Companion Workbook By Talvi I originally chose this for the exercises and chance to do CBT (Cognitive Behavior) work on my interactions with my 11 year old. However, this is actually a companion piece to the author's Whole Brain Child book and not really a stand alone. Everything kept referencing back to the other book and so I wasn't really able to follow more than a general outline. I really would have needed the original book to get the most of the workbook.I'm sure those who have read the author's other book will find this workbook very useful. Concepts such as survive and thrive, connect and redirect, name it and tame it, handling tantrums, engage don't enrage, move it or lose it, rewind and remember, and more are covered (I'm assuming these are all in the Whole Brain Child book). A lot of the workbook is about parents understanding their own behaviors by writing them down so they can address their child's issues. As such, there is a lot of 'fill in the blanks', analyzing your own behavior and observing your child. It means this is best bought as a physical copy than a Kindle (this was very hard to follow on Kindle but easy as a hard copy) so you can write on the pages.There are some crude illustrations and graphs/charts to assist with the concepts. I appreciated the cartoons most - they give good/bad ways of addressing situations that were very effective. There are also exercises and motivational tools; e.g., creating memory books and meditation.So, a useful book but one you'll definitely want to purchase after you've read the author's Whole Brain Child book first.

Great book for parents who really want to help their children grow and reach their full potential By Breanna DeWitt Great book for nurturing creativity and success at an early age. I have three children who are natural artists like their Father and we really want to help them reach their full potential. This workbook along with the main book is a good book to have in your collection. My oldest son has many homework struggles and there is practical advice and activities for making real change in this area and many other areas. The cartoons and graphs make the workbook more entertaining and functional. This a good tool for any parent. Books like this are important, but don't forget to make nutrition the cornerstone of everything. Children need DHA from fish oils and healthy food. I hope this review helps.

The date is July 1914. The first global war of the modern age is unfolding – and it knows no borders. Nations once at peace with one another are torn asunder, thrust into a battle that those on the frontline – both on land and at sea – can little comprehend. Ride the big sea adventure of Captain Andreas Ott and his crew as they encounter enemy ships and international intrigue. Safe from direct combat, they are tossed into a caldron where war is waged on its mightiest scale yet and touches their lives in the far reaches of the globe. History will tell their story, but their daily logbook will beg the fragile question: “By whose authority are they enemies?” In their quest to fulfill their uncharted mission and to honor their country, will they succeed in finding a sliver of humanity? Wrestling with their call to duty, they try to find the answers during this “war to end all wars.” About the Author: Richard Wild has always had a fervent interest in history. In The Gunpowder Run, he has been able to combine a lengthy career in the cargo shipping industry with an historical perspective. Of German heritage, Wild was born and raised in Australia and New Zealand. His work has taken him overseas, including work for German shipping lines. The Gunpowder Run is his first novel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Captures the times wonderfully! By RobH A fascinating, well researched fictional novel, which could easily pass as non-fiction. It deals with the start of WWI and the problems and uncertainties facing Captain Ott and his crew aboard their steam-[powered cargo ship. They do their best not be attacked by enemy war vessels or detained in neutral ports as they bring vital supplies to Germany. Operating as best they can with very limited information, they make their perilous way from ocean to ocean, never knowing just what is actually waiting for them over the horizon - storms, allied ships or enemy patrols.Richard Wild has captured the seafaring issues, the mores of the times and the characters with aplomb.A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Amazing to follow this cargo ship's travels and to understand the major decisions, trials and tribulations encountered as this ship endeavours to get supplies to Germany at the start of WW1 Very well researched and hard to believe this to be a fictional novel, and not a true story. The year is 1935 but this is an America where cross-dressing goes almost unremarked, often unnoticed, and gay relationships are mundane; gay marriage, a quotidian fact of life. Famed chef and female impersonator Pancetta Brulee of New Orleans has been hired to cater a gay engagement party for two prominent grooms at the infamous Faux Pas Island and the Robicheaux estate. Both family and island have a terrible past, and most Cajuns and Creoles avoid the place like the plague. Pancetta attends the weekend engagement party, only to be faced with the gory murder. The family enlists her and her gorgeous yet restless ex, who happens to be on the island as a groundskeeper. The two embark on a strenuous search for the truth of a tragic Saturday night. Among the suspects are a disillusioned fiancé, a Hollywood starlet sister-in-law, an old family friend and admirer of the deceased, a godmother and Countess of Romania, a disapproving mother and father, and a spurned lover of the dead man who has long been a rival for his father's affections. Murder on Faux Pas Island unfolds as a yarn with campy humor and a hint of romance.

Murder on Faux Pas Island (A Pancetta Bruleé Mystery), by Casey McKittrick

Review ''Like a steamy broth with a huge dash of Louisiana hot sauce this mystery rolls over you, catching you by surprise. A good read and a fun boatload of characters.'' --Joseph R.G. DeMarco, author of the Marco Fontana mysteries''Put on your chestnut bob, silver stilettos, and sassy attitude, drag queen Pancetta Brulee has arrived with more old film references than TCM, and more camp than a scout troop. The caterer/receptionist/lady detective is hot on the case, and in the oven, when murder is doled out at a wealthy couple's engagement party at the Robicheaux family plantation in 1935 New Orleans. Pancetta and her average Joe serve boeuf bourguignon and a smorgasbord of suspects until raising the lid on the murderer. Enjoy the fun, frolic, and frivolity. Charles Busch should star in the movie!'' --- Joe Cosentino, author of Drama Queen

About the Author Casey McKittrick is an Associate Professor of English at Western Michigan University, USA. He regularly teaches courses in Film Interpretation, The Films of Alfred Hitchcock, African American Literature, and American Literature surveys. He is also the author of the screenplay Pray for Me (acquired by Chaos Productions in 2013), the TV pilot "Destiny Design." His first novel "Murder on Faux Pas Island" will be available May 2015.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Mystery With a Truly Unique Spin By Nathan Burgoine There's probably a venn diagram out there that would be helpful in describing this book. The circles involved would include: historicals (mid-thirties Louisiana), alternate histories (where female impersonation is barely commented upon, and gay marriage is already in place), amateur sleuthing (the aforementioned female impersonator, Pancetta Brûlée), whodunnits, some farces (two powerful families are involved, one rich via sex-toys, the other rich via lubricants), and dark-and-stormy-night-isolations (the plot occurs on the titular Faux Pas Island, where everyone is trapped in a large mansion due to a storm).If that seems like a heady mix, it is.Pancetta Brûlée is hired to cater a weekend engagement party at the Robicheaux estate, where the son of the family and his fiancé are having what they hope will be an entertaining mixer. The guests are colourful, including Hollywood talent, a Countess, and various important folk in the various businesses of the two families. Things begin with personal friction: Pancetta is not pleased to see an ex on the roster of the hired help, but fairly soon this becomes the most minor concern as the first body appears, and murder chases away all hope of the upcoming family marriage (and business merger).The mystery itself is tangled enough for sleuth fans to enjoy sorting it out alongside Pancetta. The old estate is almost a character itself, and the otherwise non-alternate history is woven into the place. The "rich family with secrets" is played to full effect, and the inclusion of so many colourful potential murderers with likewise colourful motives works well. I did sometimes find it hard to navigate this alternate version of 1930's Louisiana in a few regards: gay marriage being legalized and gay folk being out without a second thought even in high society was an interesting notion to play with—though there were still characters who were closeted and those who were quite homophobic. I couldn't always figure out how accepted or mainstream the queer culture was intended to be.As for Pancetta herself, her character is amusing and an interesting mix of attitude, style, and the time period as imagined through this alternate lens. There were a lot of references to Pancetta's first case with her ex. I went looking for that story when I finished Murder on Faux Pas Island, only to realize it doesn't seem to exist. This feels like a second book, in the sense that we meet Pancetta and her former lover with a great sense of history and a previous case under their belt. I can't help but wonder if McKittrick will tell this original tale.I'd certainly enjoy visiting Pancetta again.I listened to this one as an audiobook, and it bears mentioning that the audio performer was fairly solid. As a Canuck, my first few visits to New Orleans had be blinking at the ways certain words were pronounced, and it took me a while to learn how to say them the local way. This comes up a few times, and though it didn't throw me out of the narrative, those who have a familiarity with New Orleans and Louisiana might find it more jarring.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Meet Pancetta Brule and a Cast of Colorful Characters By Amazon Customer The publisher sent me a copy of the book for an honest reviewMurder on Faux Pas IslandBoth sides of each family welcome sometimes marriages and at times they are questioned and the motives for he union held suspect and often presents doubts and questions that might go unanswered even after the final I Do’s are spoken. What would happen if the marriage was sanctioned but the families were kept in the dark and the nuptials were going to be repeated in a unique and special way. Within this novel there are many embarrassing social mistakes or Faux Pas that require the reader to look inside the events that transpire and find them as we take a trip back in time to Southern United States in the 1930’s and meet the families of Oz and Raymond as they are going to walk down a very different isle. Author Casey McKittrick created the character of Pancetta Brulee/Chet as a creative and talented professional caterer invited to this wedding to prepare some of her famous culinary dishes. But, what finally gets served up after all the players are introduced and we meet the families on both sides is a murder that Pancetta is asked to solve. Oswald Robicheaux and Raymond Olivero were to be married but first Raymond hired a private investigator to look into the Robicheaux family and their business. The previous summer his father was killed in what was thought to be an accident due to his over drinking but some thought it might be murder. Ramon Olivero was in love with Oswald and wanted his son to be happy but at whose expense? While Oswald was said to be off on business for his family and Raymond sent away for his both were really doing other things. Oswald was in Bucharest having fun with plenty of young males Oswald was there but not working he was recuperating from an illness and injury with the help of one of our wedding guests the Contessa who is quite interesting and colorful in her own right. Raymond was concerned about where his husband was and what he would have found out would definitely have made him think twice about his marriage and who Oswald really was and what he wanted. The plot becomes more complex as we meet the Olivero family: Sonya Raymond’s sister, her husband Beau, Uncle Marvin who was also in love with Oswald, Monroe Dangler, the accountant totally taken with this young man too, Merman the butler, Mrs. Wedgewood the housekeeper who had her own secrets and of course Pancetta and her old flame Joe Bliss. This is a cast of wild characters that will not disappoint readers.Wedding dinners are planned and the first of many successful as Pancetta begins to settle into a solid rhythm. During the celebration Oz gives a special tribute to his father for his birthday but his father, Armand does not seem to reciprocate the accolades and his response is what we might deem a true faux pas or social mistake. As the dinner draws to a close and the cards he uses to read from fall away the handwriting seems odd and the end result helps a killer complete his/her plot. Someone definitely did kill Ramon but who and when the killer puts it together this person decides to take action and what better time than now. But first another dinner, a breakfast and noises are heard coming from different floors and directions waking Pancetta and Joe. As the cast of characters emerge and each one finds themselves wondering what caused the racket, the broken glass and the noises one person leads everyone in the wrong direction hoping his/her actions will not come to the forefront and a perfect murder will go unsolved.The list of suspects if quite extensive from Uncle Marvin, Monroe, Raymond, Sonya and her husband Beau as well as the butler, the housekeeper and the Contessa. But, old feelings surface and in the middle of the investigation both Pancetta and Joe remember the past and relive it even if for a just one night. Each person within this cast of characters is unique and their personalities different as Beau and Sonya are actors and play their roles quite well. Someone finally finds the missing boat and realizes there were two and what they find explains the disappearance of the private investigator.Piecing it all together is not so simple while trying to stay objective Pancetta learns about a secret passage which explains how the killer managed to get away and leaves clues that lead them all in the wrong direction. When the final confrontation takes place another murder happens at the maid hears something and the killer needs to make sure it’s not repeated. Right out of a Hercule Poirot episode the author brings all of the suspects into one room while Pancetta eliminates them one at a time before focusing in the real killer with a surprise ending that will shock readers. Learning who was involved in the murder of Oz, the housekeeper was killed but when the evidence is brought to light and the clues out in the front the guilty person denies it all. When Oz was killed all of his holdings and stocks would go to Raymond and the merger between two family businesses would stand. As you read the final moments before the reveal Pancetta explains the part each one played in this mystery and the murder in depth. A simple note asking someone to meet was the stumper and the threat of losing his position as accountant might have been someone’s motive but was it. Lies, betrayals, affairs that come to light, unyielding situations and a family that is so disjointed they never stood as one but far apart. Who killed the senior Olivero and why? Who decided to take matters into their own hands and seek their own justice for Ramon’s death? Who stands to benefit and why? Will Raymond stand by the memory of Oz? What happens when he learns the the truth about his father’s death? Pancetta and Joe piece it together and a simple bunch of cards and a note is the killer’s downfall as some FAUX PAS’s cannot go unnoticed. Murder on Faux Pas Island is anything but a social plunder or mistake it is a well crafted, fast paced murder mystery with a character that is unique, colorful, interesting and has her/his own special flair. Let’s hope we see more of Pancetta and of course get to sample her great culinary treats.

Murder on Faux Pas Island did. I was at 71% when I was forced to put my Kindle away for the night. When I went to bed, I was still thinking about the book and wondering who the killer was. I couldn’t wait to get back to it this morning. I was not disappointed.As the blurb states, the story takes place in 1935, but we’re not talking about the 1935 we all know. In Murder on Faux Pas Island, it’s a 1935 where cross-dressing and homosexuality aren’t really even a blip on anyone’s radar; meaning that it’s really no big deal to anyone one way or another. It’s as part of society as heterosexuality and nobody thinks anything of it. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was really that way?With that being said, we are introduced to cross-dresser Pancetta Bruleé. Pancetta has her reasons for wearing women’s clothing, but she’s also very confident in her male identity, Chet. They are the same person, yet not. They are both just part of who the person is as a whole.'Pancetta Bruleé was the creation of thirty-year-old Chet Burns. She had started as a Friday night diversion, a persona to be pampered, dolled up, and taken out to the speakeasies for Female Impersonators Night. Yet, as time went on, Chet realized his frequent longing for the sexy, powerful feeling Pancetta called forth; Fridays couldn’t come fast enough. After awhile, he decided to spend his weekdays as Pancetta.~Ten years later, Pancetta hadn’t looked back. On weekends, she would leave the women’s apparel at home, don a leather jacket, and go out cruising man-to-man.'Pancetta met Oz and Raymond a few months before the story begins and they all became fast friends. After being wowed by Pancetta’s cooking, she was asked to cater their lavish engagement party that would be held at the estate of Oz’s family plantation on Faux Pas Island. Faux Pas Island is in the middle of the swamps of Louisiana and it’s not frequented by many outside of the family. Not only does it have a very shady history, but it can only be accessed by water and who knows what’s under the surface? As a native of Alabama and a frequent visitor to Louisiana, I can assure you that you don’t want to know what’s in the swamps of Louisiana. :) Pancetta is a caterer with her friend Madge, so of course they agree to cater the event. Unfortunately, Madge comes down with a bit of food poisoning so the weekend affair will be left to Pancetta. When she arrives at the large home, she’s surprised to discover that her one true love has also been hired to do handiwork the same weekend. Ah, Joe Bliss. The man who stole both Pancetta and Chet’s heart a few years back, only to leave what amounted to a quickie Dear John letter. It took forever for Pancetta to get over Joe, but seeing him again? Let’s just say that certain parts of anatomy stand up and take notice.Joe Bliss is the least of Pancetta’s concerns, it turns out. The engagement weekend will be attended by the best of the best, including Romanian royalty. From in-laws who don’t like each other, to a drunken and randy uncle, to Oz and Raymond, who have an odd relationship (to say the least), Pancetta is in for an interesting and busy weekend. But then people start getting murdered and Pancetta and Joe are forced to put their differences aside to find out who is killing people on the island.The list of suspects is pretty long. Oz isn’t exactly known for discretion when he does things behind Raymond’s back, so it could be a scorned lover who wants to hurt Oz in any way possible. Or could it be Raymond, who is possessive and has a jealous streak a mile long when it comes to his man? Or maybe it’s the Countess, who is closer to Oz than his own cold and bitter mother. But then there’s also the Hollywood couple who spend an excessive amount of time hiding away doing what they say is work for their current project. The killer could be one (or more) of any of the guests, staff, or family members. When the lady of the house enlists Pancetta and Joe to find the killer (or killers), the reader is taken on a ride that will have you rushing through the pages of the book to finally discover who the villain is.This is a great book. I usually know early on who the killer is when I’m reading a mystery. That was definitely not the case with Murder on Faux Pas Island. Each character has their own secrets that come out little by little, but no way did I even suspect the murderer was who it turned out to be. The author does an outstanding job putting all these clues out there where you’ll be convinced you know who did it one minute only to have an “Aha!” moment later. When the killer was revealed, I had one of those moments. All the clues were right in front of me the entire time, but I was thrown off course by other clues tossed in my path along the way.Not every character is likable, but they are all entertaining. When I sat down to read this, I thought I’d read a few pages and come back to it later. It didn’t work out that way. I honestly didn’t want to put my Kindle down even for a little while until I knew who did what.There’s a romance here, between Pancetta and Joe, but the mystery takes center. I love how the author didn’t focus solely on the couple. Don’t get me wrong, it’s there and there’s even one sexual experience thrown in, but I didn’t miss the lack of romance at all. I was so caught up in the mystery of the story. There’s another mystery that’s always lurking in the background of some of the key players from a year prior. Not only does Pancetta solve the murders of Faux Pas Island, but she also helps other things to come to light that might not have had everything not occurred during the engagement party weekend on Faux Pas Island.Overall, this is a brilliant mystery. I hope to see more of Pancetta/Chet and Joe in the future. I would love to see where they go from here and I’m eager to see them solve another whodunit. I’m not usually a fan of non-contemporary books. Actually, I mostly shy away from them. I’m glad I didn’t turn away from this one. Had I done so, I’d have missed out on one of the best books I’ve read this year.Highly recommended.Review originally published at ontopdownunderbookreviews.com.

The Crescent's Edge is set in the small seaside community of Crescent City California. The plot is set in 1865, shortly after the Civil War and at the sinking of the steamer Brother Jonathan. The rowdy gold strike country becomes a challenge for Becca Cates who finds herself thrust into another time. The characters, like all of us, have faults and gifts, prejudices and compassion. Excitement, romance, conflict and humor bring them together in this very different story with a historical perspective.

Love the setting & switching between current day and the 1800's. The first person narratives of actually living during this time period and the historical fiction are interesting, captivating, and exceptional. It is a "can't put it down" type book with lots of action and curiosity about what will happen next. Love how the main character befriends Chinatown and Indians, which was unheard of in the 1800's. The book is exceptionally well written.

I started it and simply could not put it down! As a teacher and resident of Crecent City, I teach my students about the Brother Jonathan history. I was fascinated with the rich history in this truly wonderfully written historical fiction. I really connected with the characters and was sad to end it. I am awaiting for a sequel! A good book leaves a reader reflecting and pondering it long after, and this is just what I am doing after having finished it. I would recommend this book to anyone. You are in for a real treat!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Waiting for the sequel (hint, hint) By Pandorasecho I was a little uncertain about reading a book set in the town I've called home since 1989. The last novel I read set here in Crescent City, CA was infuriatingly wrong on a lot of little details, the kinds of things that you would only notice if you lived here. It was enough to make me really hate a perfectly good story that time, as I kept interrupting my reading to grumble, "you could find that on Google in under a minute!"When I realized the author lived in the area, and was willing to do the research, I became interested, and upon reading the description and finding out that a large portion of the story was based upon the fascinating wreck of the Brother Jonathan, which I have long been curious about, I knew I would have to give it a try.The Crescent's Edge is a long read for someone like me, who usually writes and teaches books in the middle and high school grade levels. But every word of this novel was enjoyable and after 640 pages I found myself hoping for a sequel.The book spans two timelines and involves a bit of confusion as all the author reference to two of the main characters use their names, but the friends and contemporaries address them by each other's names. It isn't as confusing as it sounds however, and works. Think of the old Disney, "Freaky Friday" stories and you will understand the body switch which happens here. It is a strange concept but believably explained in the world of the story and a lovely way to visit both the old era Crescent City, and the current era.The real strength of this book is in the setting and characters being handled in a way that makes them feel real. You see the disturbing history and the contrasting fact that the same people who show such empathy to the shipwreck survivors and to the families of the dead, are the same people who live and accept such very unempathetic things as legally being able to hunt "Indians" and dumping some bodies in a mass grave on unhallowed ground if they couldn't be proven to be Christian. You see the segregation of the Chinese to a limited section of town and the cruelty of dog fighting. There are a lot of real life issues covered inside this charming, time tangled fantasy, but it never comes off as preachy or judgmental. The book is also filled with fascinating quotes and has an interesting bibliography if you are interested in exploring the history more yourself.If you want a good read with a bit of education as a side order then this fits the bill. I really recommend it highly.

We’ve been duped into removing prayer from the center of our churches and have placed it on the periphery or semi-periphery.  What we’re witnessing today in our churches, and in society at large, is that legacy of prayerlessness.  Church leadership may be hesitant and embarrassed to admit it, but there is a direct correlation between our spiritual weakness and our lack of corporate prayer.  In Inevitable and Imminent: On Becoming a House of Prayer – The Process, Hugh boldly addresses the issue of prayerlessness in our churches and presents biblical insight that will revolutionize the way we approach prayer in our congregations and invigorate our ministries to have a greater impact on our communities.

Inevitable and Imminent will:

  • Address how prayerless Christians impede the proper functioning of the church and will equip church leadership with the necessary tools to challenge this phenomenon;
  • Motivate churches to cultivate and maintain an organizational culture and worship structure where consistent corporate and personal prayer is the norm;
  • Get churches excited about praying, while outlining the spiritual, physical, emotional, and social implications for the congregation and the surrounding community; and
  • Underscore the prominence that prayer must have in the lives of members and chiefly in the lives of church leadership.

Hugh draws on his experience in sociology and business to outline the process of how a church can transition from simply being a “church” to become a “house of prayer.”  For the church (spiritual and departmental leaders, members) that wants to make prayer a priority and have optimal power for ministry, Inevitable and Imminent is a must read that will guide you through a biblically informed process.  In a very realistic approach, Hugh provides church leadership with the necessary tools to assist their church in achieving God’s goal for His last-day church – finishing the work.

Review "It has been a deep spiritual experience reading through this valuable document, Hugh. The Lord has given you something special and you are wise enough to do something about it! In this book I particularly like how you stated your presuppositions at the beginning, and how the diagrams used expand and become clearer as the chapters progress. Your personal experiences and the journey you invite us to share with you adds validity and credibility to this book. Here, you have a meaningful, informative, practical, and spiritual approach. I love it!" - Dion T. Harrigan, Ph.D. Pastor, Bethany SDA Church Professor of Education, Nyack College "The Old Testament scholar and founder of the Biblical Seminary in New York, Wilbert Webster White, famously said, 'Prayer works, prayer is work, prayer leads to work.' Dr. Carrington's book takes the genius of White's profound statement and breaks it into understandable and digestible parts informed by the latest insights from the sociological and business worlds and the eternal truths of scripture. If your evangelical church is stuck in neutral, Dr. Carrington's insight and guidance may just be what you need to get moving again." - The Rev William Weisenbach, DMin, DD Retired Presbyterian Minister Former Academic Vice President of New York Theological Seminary "In Inevitable and Imminent, Dr. Carrington provides profound insight to the question: What is the quality of your individual and corporate prayer life? Prayerfulness is the hallmark of spiritual potency and prayerlessness reflects spiritual impotency. Whenever churches regulate prayer to a secondary or tertiary position those institutions quickly approach the precipice of spiritual irrelevancy." - Roland H. Robinson Assistant Dean Student Affairs, LIU Brooklyn Associate Minister, Brown Memorial Baptist Church

Powerful & Insightful By Amazon Customer I have long held the belief the word of God—The Bible—is a book of patterns and principles upon which one can build a successful church, business, marriage, life etc. Dr. Hugh Carrington’s book Inevitable & Imminent: On Becoming a House of Prayer – The Process confirms my belief. Dr. Carrington adeptly mines the word of God and illustrates the blueprint and principles that will transform any ministry or individual. Inevitable & Imminent boldly demonstrates with clarity that power to transform flows from proclaiming the word of God and lays out the simple, yet profound, process of becoming “a house of prayer for all peoples,” which in turn will transform a life, a family, a ministry, a community, a city or a nation. Inevitable & Imminent is a must read for anyone who wishes to become a transformational leader of this generation and revive and fulfill Christ’s directive for His church—becoming “a house of prayer for all peoples.” Catch the vision…receive the power. By Marlon Robinson Inevitable and Imminent emphasizes the primary importance of prayer in the body of Christ, the church. Dr. Carrington pulls together biblical information and his own personal prayer journey to challenge the readers of this volume to take God’s people higher. This book is not another book about prayer through some sort of mechanistic process, but it is a book that underscores the essence of spending quality time in corporate prayer in our churches. Dr. Carrington highlights the irony of the situation in his assessment of the prayerlessness that exists in many churches when churches are called upon to become “houses of prayer.” This book is a must read because it is biblical, radical, practical, personal, forthright, and thought provoking. I would recommend this volume to every person that is associated with a church, and more specifically, every person in church leadership. Inevitable and Imminent was a great read and I have no doubt that you will enjoy your journey with this book.

Athough short, it's very descriptive and very well told. You actually 'feel' what is happening. For some reason, I've found the end of the story really sad, maybe this is what it makes it truly wonderful.So long.

Was the church Jesus' idea? From huge edifices to humble storefronts, from high church Anglicans to exuberant Pentecostals, from the Middle East to Asia to Africa―can this all be the church, so varied and far flung? From his roots in Africa, David Zac Niringiye takes us on the journey of a pilgrim people, helping us to appreciate what the church is at all times and in all places. This introduction provides a biblical theology that tells the story of the people and promise of God through Moses, of the kingdom of God in Christ, and work of his people by the Holy Spirit. Being people on a journey means we are strangers and foreigners, yet also a people with a purpose, with a mission. We are a people who live in hope, looking forward to the justice, peace and joy God has planned.

The Church: God's Pilgrim People, by David Zac Niringiye

Review "Every journey I have taken with Bishop Zac has been both challenging and life-giving. This book is no exception. Like a knowledgeable safari guide, Bishop Zac points out the highs and lows as he takes us on an extraordinary biblical journey through what it means to be the community of God's people―from creation to new creation. Godly discontent over the mismatch he has seen between much contemporary church and the biblical vision of a community of faith, hope and love drives Bishop Zac to ask us to take stock of our part of the community of God. To be read carefully, prayerfully and humbly by all who profess Christ's name, wherever they are in the world, so that the community of God may reveal Christ to the world, not hide Christ from the world." (David Williams, bishop of Basingstoke, UK)"Congratulations to David Zac! This is a brilliant piece of work. The subject is timely, coming at a time when the church is expanding rapidly, yet declining and disintegrating with equal speed. David Zac has captured both the rise and fall of God's community in a technical yet easily readable manner. The Church is theologically sound, historically accurate, but more importantly, culturally relevant for the church's new center of gravity―Africa. What comes out clearly is that the church is, as David Zac puts it, a community in the Spirit, a dwelling of God in God! No gates of hell can prevail against it. If you are interested in the development of the church, this is a great read. If you care little about the church, here is a must read." (David Oginde, presiding bishop, Christ Is the Answer Ministries (CITAM), Nairobi, Kenya)"David Zac Niringiye is for me a modern hero of the faith. He has been so helpful to our community of hundreds of students and all nations and ages at the heart of Oxford. When he gave up his role of bishop to work for the cause of justice in Uganda and beyond, some feared he might forget the church. But this brilliant book shows the opposite is true. He writes movingly about the people of God on the journey of God and invites us winsomely to join in the advancing kingdom of God. Get this book to get in touch with your destiny." (Charlie Cleverly, rector of St. Aldates Church, Oxford, UK)"As an evangelist among people of other faiths, I have struggled with the huge chasm between our understanding and teaching of who we are as God's people in the world and our practice of church. Reading this book will help us to define the essence of our existence as a people of God in the world. Bishop David Zac makes a bold clarification of a rather hazy view of the church as God's pilgrim people that has been clouded with our propensity to settle for mediocrity." (Canon Francis Omondi, All Saints Cathedral Nairobi, Anglican Church of Kenya, chairman of CMS Africa, director of the Sheepfold Ministries)"Here is a narrative-based theology of the church, the people of God, from the life experience and mind of an African theologian. It offers a prophetic challenge to common Christian confusions about and distortions of the church. Every Christian concerned about the state of the church should read it." (Roger E. Olson, Foy Valentine Professor of Christian Theology and Ethics, George W. Truett Seminary)"It is so refreshing to read what Bishop David Zac Niringiye, long-term friend and brother, has to say about the church. On the one hand I am personally warned of how easy it is for us, lost in the exuberance of our inventions and redefinition of the church, to lose our bearing with regards to God's purpose for the church. On the other, I am reminded of why the church today should be a continuing story, journey and witness of the people of God to his kingdom. In a contemporary age in which the identity of the church has been re-created in our image―be it ethnic, social, economic or whatever else, with all their attendant paraphernalia, Bishop Zac's clear word is a call for sober reflection regardless of our church tradition. Rather than just a lamentation of how church easily slides from being 'all about God' to 'all about us' or even just 'me,' this is a prophetic call to rediscover and return to God's original purpose for the church in relation to his kingdom. I commend this book to all who long for the church to be the church as communities of God's people 'announcing and demonstrating the kingdom of God by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.'" (Femi B. Adeleye, director of church partnerships, Global Centre Christian Commitments, World Vision International)"I can think of few people from whom I would rather hear about the church than from David Zac Niringiye from Uganda. He is biblically focused, intellectually careful, diagnostically truthful, courageously honest, emotionally bold, relationally sincere and publicly fearless. Hearing his voice and seeing his life as a brother and mentor has changed my life. This book will hopefully open that experience to many others as well. If the body of Christ is to be God's light and salt in the real world, we need Bishop Zac to confront and inspire us to new and vigorous life." (Mark Labberton, president, Fuller Theological Seminary)

Pate David Zac Niringiye is an African theologian and former bishop in the Church of Uganda. In The Church: God’s Pilgrim People, Niringiye critiques the current state of the church (not the Church of Uganda specifically, but the Christian church in general) and offers a biblical history of the church in order to define what the church is and what it is supposed to be.Niringiye argues, understandably, that the church falls short of what it should be. As Niringiye notes, it is a problem when many people in Ruwanda attend church, yet hate their enemies and seek to kill them. There is an obvious disconnect there. The Western church does not escape Niringiye’s criticism, either, for he is critical of the disparities in wealth in the worldwide church. For Niringiye, the church has largely failed to be the community of love that it should be, or to be salt and light in the world.For Niringiye, the church itself is not the Kingdom of God, and yet the church relates to the Kingdom of God: Christians are citizens of the Kingdom, they pray for it to come, and they do their part to bring the world under the rule of Christ. The church is present in the Old Testament, Niringiye narrates, as God sought to establish a community of worshipers through Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. The successor to Old Testament Israel, according to Niringiye, is the Christian church. Niringiye strikes me as supersessionist in his view, here.Niringiye believes that the church should be a missionary church, proclaiming the good news of what Christ has done. At the same time, Niringiye also does not preclude the possibility that God may be involved in non-Christian cultures and the lives of non-Christians.Another point that Niringiye makes is that Christians from different ethnicities can learn from one another, and that this can give them a fuller appreciation of Jesus and God’s love. As an example, Niringiye states that Jewish Christians in the first century considered Jesus the Messiah, whereas Greek-speaking Christians called Jesus lord, “the titles that Greek Christians used for their cult divinities (Acts 11:19-21)” (page 183). Both learned from one another, Niringiye states.There were cases in which I was not entirely sure if I agreed with Niringiye, but what he said was thought-provoking. On page 41, for example, in talking about Moses, Niringiye contrasts the God of Israel with the gods of Egypt. According to Niringiye, the God of Israel was “relational, in-community, in himself and with humankind and creation”, whereas the Egyptian gods were “distant” and “impersonal”. (This is in terms of how they conceptualized their deities.) Was this the case? Was the God of Israel conceptually more relational than the gods of Egypt? Some believe that the God of Israel was different from ancient Near Eastern deities, whereas others highlight the similarities, seeing the God of Israel as just another ancient Near Eastern deity, not fundamentally different from how other ancient Near Easterners conceptualized their deities. I am skeptical when Jewish and Christians, to support their religion, maintain that their religion was superior to other religions in the past; at the same time, I do not rule out completely that ancient Judaism and Christianity may have been better, in areas, from a humanitarian perspective. Some would say it was worse, in areas. Niringiye’s comments, and similar comments in the book, provoked thought about this issue.Niringiye talked about Christians helping to bring the world under the dominion of Christ, and that frightened me, a bit. It sounded somewhat like Christian Reconstructionism, or what elements of the religious right want to do. I respect that Niringiye was talking about missions, love, inclusion, and social justice, but, since he was a religious leader in Uganda, I wondered what his stance was towards the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill. I will not try to define his position myself, but I will provide two links:http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/decemberweb-only/151-42.0.htmlhttp://oblogdeeoblogda.me/2013/02/16/ugandan-bishop-attacked-by-anti-gay-makere-university-students/The book is a bit meandering. It sometimes speaks in generalities rather than fleshing out what it is trying to say. Still, in its own way, it was an edifying read, and it made important points.I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

The author doesn't come up with answers for your life but rather makes you pause... to stop, think and reflect on where you are headed in life. An encouraging read if you're not sure in which direction you are going.

A Reasonable Review from a College Student By Gunslinger Before I purchase any product, especially online, I obsess over reviews and blog entries and any other information I can find on it. I must have read a hundred different pieces on this Bible before buying it. I was so disappointed with many of Amazon's Bible reviews because many of the comments are from overzealous supporters (or opponents) to a certain translation. Here's the short list of things to have in mind before buying (or not buying) this Bible....1) It's sweet. It looks exactly like a large square-ish moleskine journal (which, by the way, are also sweet). It also seems to share the moleskine's durability, but only time will tell.2) It does have small type (7.5). It is not, by any means, too small...provided you are in the market for a compact or thin-line type Bible. You won't want to get this if you are farsighted.3) There is plenty of margin space and the lines ARE close together...but they consist of tiny light dots so it won't be a problem to use 2 lines for larger writing. The paper is thinner than moleskine, but if it bleeds...go spend 4 dollars on a better pen.4) The ESV is a great translation. It is only very slightly less literal than the NASB but flows better, and is therefor excellent for both devotional reading and study.5) It's the inspired inerrant word of God.

It's smaller than a "regular" Bible (see pictures- I added a quarter for perspective). The smaller size keeps the weight down, but look at the pictures to be certain the print is not too small for your comfort.Inside:This is not a study Bible. There's a few introductory pages at the front of the book. The back of the book includes an explanation of salvation, a short synopsis of every book of the Bible, and a one year reading plan.This Bible (as the title suggests) is designed for journaling. Each page features two columns of scripture accompanied by a column for writing (or art). The lines are faint... I had to get pretty close to try to capture them with the camera. They are small, narrow lines. I appreciate the faintness of the lines for the pages where I want to add artwork instead of just notes.The pages are still traditional-Bible-thin. I wouldn't paint without some kind of gesso (my opinion, your mileage may vary). You'll still need to consider carefully the mediums (pens, highlighters, etc.) you use if you don't want it to go through to the other page.I appreciate the cardboard slipcover. I feel like it would keep my journaling Bible safe in a tote bag if I wanted to be outside or on the road with it.Overall, it's simply charming. I feel inspired to start reading right away.

By Michael Noes In reading through the poor reviews that this Bible is getting, I'm convinced that the people who wrote them didn't know what they were getting when they ordered it. This is a unique Bible. The reason I'm rating it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I understand it's not for everybody.I'm 23, and I own all sorts of Bibles and Bible versions. I've been waiting for a Bible I could really feel is my own, something that wouldn't feel out of place if I throw it in my backpack, but still has something to it that would make me want to use it.Basically, this Bible is an attempt to merge the Bible and a moleskine notebook, right down to the shrink wrapped packaging and paper insert, cream colored pages and the elastic strap. I'm a moleskine notebook user, and I love the things. If you do too, chances are you won't dislike this Bible. If you don't know what moleskines are or aren't a fan, this Bible might not appeal to you. I'm sure this is the reason for a lot of the dissatisfaction that people have. This bible devotes a lot of real estate to the journaling area; if you aren't planning on writing a lot in it, don't get this bible.The text is very small (though not super-tiny like those pocket bibles). But that was something I was expecting, and I don't mind. If the text were any bigger, this bible would be thicker and heavier than I'd like. It's easily thrown in a backpack (securely with that oh-so-handy elastic strap) and it's not a burden to use or to carry around. The pages are slightly thicker and more porous than your traditional bible pages. I don't mind this at all- it's easier to write in the nearly two-inch margins (I use a mechanical pencil), and it probably makes the whole thing a bit less dense and lighter.So I must confess, I'm in love with this bible. I can understand people's gripes about the text size and the size of the lines in the margins, but really, I don't mind either of these things, because I would rather that the overall product be smaller. You can get a lot of writing done in those nice big margins if you write small. I see no problems with the binding.If you're looking for a standard, run-of-the-mill, regularly proportioned Bible, then this would be a bit of a shock if you ordered it and didn't expect the things that make it different. Take a look at the shape of it, and check out the pictures available online that show the pages. Personally I think this Bible has a lot of character, I love how simple it is, and I've been waiting for a journaling bible like it for some time now.
