It deals with the start of WWI and the problems and uncertainties facing Captain Ott and his crew aboard their steam-[powered cargo ship. They do their best not be attacked by enemy war vessels or detained in neutral ports as they bring vital supplies to Germany. Operating as best they can with very limited information, they make their perilous way from ocean to ocean, never knowing just what is actually waiting for them over the horizon - storms, allied ships or enemy patrols.Richard Wild has captured the seafaring issues, the mores of the times and the characters with aplomb.A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Amazing to follow this cargo ship's travels and to understand the major decisions, trials and tribulations encountered as this ship endeavours to get supplies to Germany at the start of WW1 Very well researched and hard to believe this to be a fictional novel, and not a true story.
