Eva wanted to move to New York and become a writer. But her dream didn't happen the way she had hoped it would.While still in high school she thought she had met the man of her dreams, Leo Maguire. Eva's father did not approve of their relationship because she was only 17 and Leo was 23. Eva's father agreed to let her date Leo even though he felt something seemed to be wrong about Leo but he couldn't put his finger on it.After dating for several years Eva becomes pregnant and they are forced to be married and made to leave town immediately by Leo's mother. After the baby is born is when Leo starts to drinking more and becoming violent toward Eva. After being beaten many times by Leo is when she decides to move back home with her child to live. She gets a divorce from Leo hoping she would never have to see him again, but he can't seem to stay away from her. He continues to drink and to harass her. The last straw came when he beat her very badly. That is when she decides to move to New York with the hope he never finds her.Eva now begins the journey that will change her life in more ways than she thought possible. She meets many strong women who showed her how life is suppose to be and how she can accomplish many things her life. Even though she was a victim of abuse, she doesn't let that define her. She learns there are many women who are or have been victims of domestic abuse and it doesn't matter if the woman was poor or wealthy, abusers come from all walks of life.I enjoyed reading this book by Valerie Joan Connors even though it's not the type of book I usually read.I was given this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Just as I anxiously thought something must change, it did, especially the timing of changes in Eva’s life. These characters are compelling and everyone except Leo is lovable. Leo is equally compelling and despicable. Eva’s friend Katherine is so admirable that I’d like to see her show up in another of Joan’s books. Eva’s courage, determination, dogged persistence, and discriminating taste make her a success story. The support and encouragement of her marvelous family and friends is not to be discounted. This story shows the powerful effect of one girl’s hopeful, hard-working determination and how, with the help of good people, a person can conquer the toughest of life’s challenges - especially a woman’s problems and challenges. The story, though set in the 1950's, is timeless in that unfortunately there are always some abusive husbands and women who must escape and liberate themselves.Repeated suspense and multiple crises held me in this story until The End.

A very uplifting novel with romance, family bonding, grit, and a glimpse of history in the not-too-distant past.

Gray Due to a recent interaction with my long term girlfriend, I began to presume that she may actually be cheating on me. Given that I’ve never been in this situation before I purchased this book by reference from a coworker who said it was a stellar guide for someone in my situation. After digesting the material I can definitely say that this is a definitive manual for catching a cheater. The author, an obvious authority on the situation, goes through everything necessary in order to not only find out if your mate is cheating, but how to deal with it when they’re caught, and even how to start all over if it comes to that. The tips to get your partner to confess about the affair was very insightful and I’m already making an attempt to use it this weekend to see if she will expose any hidden truths. Also, the detailed signs that your mate is cheating was a compendium of exacting details that not only illuminated me on the proper cues, but also helped me to realize that her infidelity may actually be true. I hope that I can just get her to confess if this is the case, but if not, I’ll use the military grade tactics I learned in this guide next, like the list that shows you how to catch your partner in the act. Hopefully I won’t have to go this far, but if so, I’ll know exactly what I need to do.In summary, this is an outstanding book for anyone that questions whether your mate is cheating. It covers everything you would need and is definitely something that is great to have in your arsenal. I’m sure it’s going to remain a reference in my personal library for a long time to come.

By Rae Phillips Don’t be fooled by the light-hearted cover, this book challenges behaviours and will end up making you think harder about yourself than your relationship. It will make you ask some interesting questions about fidelity and the very different reasons that both men and women cheat on their partner.What I found most interesting about this short book is that it is more of self-help guide that “How To Catch A Cheater” it contains some gem advice and looks at how to deal with the truth and move on, either from the affair… or the relationship.If you really are serious about catching your partner in the act, the author lists monitoring software and products that you can utilise but the best chapter was the one citing clever ways to catch them out, without doubt this was written for women… just so manipulative!!!The book follows a fluid narrative and towards the latter part of the book the author begins to bring everything together looking at personality types and future relationships. Every reader will take something from this book but beware this book carries a warning in its introduction… If you are not ready for the truth, stop reading here!!!

There are so many cheap and shoddy books out there on this subject, as well as "How to Keep Your Man Excited" and so on. It can be very difficult to find a gem. Eugene Walker's "How to Catch a Cheater in 48 Hours or Less" is a diamond in the rough of all those titles out there. This book is the real deal.I thought it was interesting that there were more tell-tale signs if a woman is cheating than if a man, and even more interesting to me were the parallel signs and completely different signs (such as men being more apt to do something than women). The myriad of chapters were also interesting, such as how to catch them in the act and how to deal with toxic relationships. I found Walker's guide to be very thorough, interesting, and readable.I would toss out all the other books that you have in this genre- THIS is the only one that you need!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really like the Kydd books By D. G. I really like the Kydd books, but this was disappointing. I think the author doesn't know enough history of the period (unlike his usual Age of Sail stuff) to pull something like this off. The Byzantine parts are implausible - he seems to be showing us all the famous Byzantine people of the period, just to show off, as far as I can tell, since this serves no useful function, but they seem completely shallow and out of character to me (I know a bit about this topic). I can't judge the Chinese part as well, but it also rings false. Somehow even the quality of writing seems off. In short, I hope he sticks to the Kydd books in the future.

At first it looked like the book was written for young people,however that is a no no,because the author uses the f-word so much. I really think the author should stick to the Kydd series.If there is a follow up to The Silk Tree, I will not buy it.

Julian Stockwin has another winner By David Newton I have to say that I approached reading this book with some trepidation having been a devoted follower of "Kydd" and had read all his stories. Would the author's new venture live up to what had gone before? Would the change of time and location hold as much fascination for as my great love of the sea and the Napoleonic wars?Well, I have to say that The Slik Tree exceeded my expectations. What a story; what characters; what detail; what descriptions! I felt that I was there travelling and suffering with Nicander and Marius. The final twist at the end was masterpiece - I didn't see it coming.

So great that I’ve bought this double offer, as both books give essential information to learn for us to help our child to grow nicely and solve the problems without concentrating on negative but shifting to positive and giving valuable lessons to our daughter. Sometimes it is not so easy but we are learning. She is very emotional and get angry fast , so important to stay calm and correct the situation and her attitude, the tips are great help. Being so temperamental she get jealous sometimes without vivid reason, self confidence with good attitude to others should be in balance, learning how to deal with these aspects. Her sensitivity to the mind’s health extends to her ministry in the form of writing. Her initial book marries both aspects of her persona and the result is a book that is not only inspiring but well written as well.In her Prologue Isabel offers the foundation for writing this book: ‘It was about two in the morning when I woke up from a dream. I clumsily reached for the lamp because it was too dark to see. I turned on the lamp, got out of bed, opened the drawer in my nighstand, and reached for a random magazine I noticed. I skimmed the pages, tore off one with some open white space, and feverishly wrote down what I could recall from the dream. I dreamed I was writing the beginning of a book. I woke up after I saw myself close the book and read the title of what is now this book, Conversations with My Fathers: My Earthly Father and My Heavenly Father. I believe I was merely an instrument, the pen if you will, and my heavenly Father was the author of what I had seen … this book. We read about how the author Isabel had dreamed about writing this actual book. She awoke from the dream having seen herself finish and title the book. Started to write it and believed she was merely the pen and God was using her to write his book and become the author.The book is very well written and is about a Woman, her Father, love, family, her heavenly father, life and redemption. We see how the author with God's help, brought her Father to meet the Lord and create a deep loving relationship for life.Although it is religious I feel that anyone could read, especially if they are trying to find God. It's written in a way that brings people closer to God and would be a comfort in times when they need him the most.Losing a loved one is never easy and can completely make one question their faith but this could certainly help a great number of people. In a way it puts your mind at rest when you wonder if your loved ones fInd their salvation. It certainly makes you question your life and beliefs as well.

It's an expectedly irreverent (though surprisingly less so than you might think) look at some of God's early work, told in the way a friend might describe a strange movie they recently watched. It tosses aside the the stodgy language and relays the stories so that they are both enjoyable - seriously, I even found myself chuckling through the "begats" and anyone who has ever had to study those knows that that's bordering on divine - but also in a way that makes the stories and characters more relatable, in turn making them more memorable and their actions more understandable.Sure, the author takes a couple of good-humored jabs at some of the more hard-to-swallow points and even a few at the big man himself, but I think even those with a relatively comprehensive knowledge of the Bible might still find themselves surprised by the things they pick up from the author's outsider retelling. It *mostly* manages to keep it on the rails and smoothly moving through the material, which may not seem impressive unless you've met Micah Edwards and realize he's a 99% tangent-based creature.And really, that's the only downside I can see; having had the chance to speak to the author, I was able to read it in his voice, which only makes it more enjoyable. If you don't have that luxury, you should email him repeatedly to demand he record the audiobook himself. There's a not-insignificant chance he will tell you to go away, but hey... miracles happen. Maybe. Actually I don't even know anymore.Disclosure: I was an advanced reader (take that, Mrs. Hurst from 1st grade!) and, while I was not paid for this review, I did get the book for free. But I've also have had to spend countless hours in the company of an author whose brain runs almost entirely on puns, so believe me... I've paid for it.

I was chuckling and sometimes even laughing out loud in every chapter (and there's a lot of chapters). The author's broken the book up by cohesive verses instead of biblical chapters. Sometimes as few as four verses gets their own chapter, if they don't fit with the surrounding verses, and sometimes it's up to two chapters smooshed together because it's all the same plotline. The foreword sets the tone of the whole book. If you don't laugh at least once in the foreword (that you can preview), you can probably skip the rest of the book. Personally, I liked it enough I had to read parts to my husband. The last paragraph in each chapter was the best - it summarized the absurdity of the chapter and set you up for the next bit of story telling.This book is probably most appropriate for the lapsed religious individual (in other words, I'm the perfect target audience). It's best for someone who knows the stories, but won't be offended by poking fun at them. When you do some analysis of the stories in Genesis, there are some inconsistencies. (Like the whole double creation bit in the first two chapters of Genesis. What happened to the first people God created? According to the author, God lost them - he's very forgetful and repeats himself all the time.) The only potential negative I could see was the few pop culture shout outs (Facebook, Candy Crush, Valar Morghulis) that may date the book in a few years. Now, they fit right in and add to the amusement of the writing. Highly recommended.

However, as a child raised in the "every word of the Bible is literal truth" school of the Bible belt who has aged and thought my way to some new beliefs, the premise intrigued me. A bit of irreverance yet still based accurately on the book of Genesis? I'll give it a try.I am so pleased I dedicated an hour and a half of my time to this read. As I mentioned, I am not a huge consumer of comedy in any form. Despite that, I found myself laughing aloud far more than I expected. I also found the humor to be sarcastic and sophisticated for the most part; I did not feel as though the author took "cheap shots" of jokes that are traditionally associated with Christianity. Beyond this, many parts of the book left me pondering what happens to a text once it has been translated many times over by various interpreters with different agendas. While I've thought about this tangentially before, something about the ludicrousy of the retelling here really gave me pause and drove me to think more on this.Finally, due to this book I now refer to my significant other as Muppim. Which we both find hilarious. So thanks, Mr. Edwards, for that.(Please note that I was provided an advance copy of this book, but the honest review above is my own.)

This book uses a variety of characters, real and imagined, to tell the story of a people who went from being Spaniard to Mexican to American in a short span of 30 years. They struggled to hold on to their land, their language, their culture, and their history—against insurmountable odds. At times this struggle resorted to violence. This is a historical novel depicting the “Plan of San Diego, Texas,” one of those times when the struggle became violent. They lived in what can truly be called "Medio México." It was an area that was claimed by distant capitals in México City and Washington DC, but ruled by neither; neither knew or cared much about them. They were caught in between two languages, two cultures, two legal systems, two political systems, and two monetary and economic systems. Despite it all, they survived and flourished. It was not easy by any means; to survive they had to fight and die for what they believed, what they owned, what they knew, what they wanted for their children. This book uses fictional characters to tell their story. The characters are fictional but they are authentic. They are not based on any one person but rather are a compilation of various real persons and the imagination of the author–formed by historical knowledge and his own experiences. Their conversations and interactions with real persons, such as President Woodrow Wilson, President Venustiano Carranza, and all the other historical figures are imaginary but they are based on who these historical figures were, said, and did.

An Eye-opener By Atilano Salas Alfredo Cardenas deserves to be commended for the long hours he invested researching material for this fictional account of a violent and sad chapter of near-forgotten South Texas history. His gripping tale is an eye-opener for those of us who live, work and play in this storied border region.

JordanBook Review, by Bill Younglove What do a golfer, a coach, an artist, a minister, a politician, an educator, or a Holocaust survivor have in common? The answer, according to authoress Jennifer Jordan is: Fatherhood. Sandwiched in among some fifty short stories of men who chose—or were even “drafted into”—fatherhood is the prevailing wisdom most of these men managed, eventually, to bring to the task. As the very varied men make absolutely clear throughout the book, there was no one path—and, truthfully, likely never will be, to raising children. All of these men, in their exceedingly diverse backgrounds, ranging from the barely schooled to the highly educated, from the free-spirited to the rule-bound, and from the persecuted to fully-liberated beings, managed to seek out ways to inject deep and continued meaning into their own children’s lives. Many readers will be struck, as I was, by passages such as this one: “Raising a family and being a dad is an endless journey of highs and lows, good times and bad; accidents and sickness, holidays, school days, driving lessons and everything in between.” This message, coming from “Down Under” (an Aussie!), echoes a Southern California minister’s view from some 7500 miles away, “There isn’t just one way to be a father…”Yet, as another pastor reminds us, “Words are a bit like coins…you get too many in circulation, and they lose their value.” So, which words should the readers of Jordan’s book choose to guide their own fatherly odyssey? Throughout the book, Jordan has added her own pithy conclusions to each father’s renderings—and makes it clear that the book’s genesis was her own formative years with Russ Jordan, “a man [father] of few words,” who obviously managed to inspire his daughter to collect--and write down--many words reflective of his training, commitment, and love. The astute readers may find fathers like their own on these pages—or even composite fathers, but rarely has the search for the heart of fatherhood been so deeply and richly explored as it is in Jordan’s Fathers’ Wisdom.

Dads of different ages, different circumstances, from different places in the world, and yet the common thread is their love of and responsibility for their families. I was lucky enough to attend the "book send off party" and meet some of the dads in person as well as some of their children. Very inspirational book!

I loved reading the stories from such diverse fathers as the Danish professor, congressman, golf pros, artist, and improv actor. The soul of the fathers radiates from the pages. The descriptions were so vivid, that I could feel the fathers' feelings of their joys and trials. My favorite quote was the meditation after the Auschwitz survivor's section, which says to be a "voice of truth and peace to help create a better world." As a Holocaust survivor, he'd understand the necessity for peace, and this book contributes its heart of love to help create this better world. It was awesome to read the positive stories of loving, devoted dads instead of the discouraging stories I usually hear about fathers abandoning their kids and shirking their parental duties. Thanks to the author for an inspiring read.

Neo-Western with original character By Ed Lynskey, Dev Mallory, an agent with a secret branch of the President's Secret Service, in August 1887 is dispatched to Denver. An employee of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing has disappeared and with him the knowledge to create metal plates and produce fake C-notes. Mallory's mission is to locate the plates and shut down the counterfeiters. If you grew up reading westerns (Brand, Grey, L'Amour, Shirreffs) as I did, then you can appreciate a new title. For one thing, this tale is set in Denver, still a rough frontier town, but it's also a bustling city, replete with its street gangs, sanitation problems, and big hotels. Dev is a likeable protagonist, more fond of rapturous ladies than strong drink. The "mystery within the mystery" finds the counterfeit gang members getting murdered. Puckish humor includes a houseful of kittens. As always, the prose is muscular and elegant. Enjoy it all.

Lerman I was excited to read a western starring a Secret Service agent, not cowboys or Texas Rangers -- especially since it takes place in my city. But the author ignores Denver's history and geography altogether. The story is set in 1887. Denver was founded in 1858, suffered from several natural disasters in the 1860s, and got a railroad spur in 1870. Colorado became a state in 1876, just before a silver boom brought even more wealth to the new capitol. Yet Ed Gorman ignores all this. He only describes a boomtown with sprawling slums where the state capitol now stands!?! The hero, Dev, spends more time remembering his pre-war crimes than following clues to find the counterfeiter's printing press. Worse, every woman in this non-historic story wears jeans instead of dresses with wide bustles! No wonder Dev thinks more about women than counterfeiters!

A Solid Snoopy Collection By Pop Bop The first book collecting "Peanuts" strips came out in 1952, and for the next fifty years the Peanuts gang was a major part of public culture. Everyone knew Charlie Brown and the rest of the kids and most people were familiar with the main running story arcs. Of course, as is so often the case, some of the supporting characters became very popular in their own rights, and Snoopy was probably the most important and recognizable breakout character.Well, time has not been kind to the physical reminders of the gravy days of the 50's and 60's. My old collections have torn paper covers, sad dried out spines, and brittle yellow pages. Who knew back then that those one dollar each collections needed to be printed on archival paper?This collection is just right for anyone who wants a broad and reasonably thorough reminder of the best of Peanuts. As you might expect, the focus is on Snoopy rather than Charlie Brown, which is a final indignity that Charlie probably would have seen coming. But, because Snoopy was central to pretty much everything that went on, especially in the earlier days, (but without any thought balloons of his own in the very first years), a Snoopy collection ends up being a survey of the whole Peanuts gang.I have to admit that I thought the whole World War I flying ace thing went on too long, and you do get a lot of that here. But you also get Snoopy the vulture, Snoopy the bane of Lucy's life, Snoopy and the birds, and of course Snoopy and long-suffering Charlie. There are also a fair number of stand alone bits that remind you that Snoopy could also toss off some deadpan commentary on the state of society, and there are some reminders that there could be a bit of edge and vinegar in the Charlie Brown world and in Snoopy's observations.So, bottom line, if you'd like a nice Snoopy summary, or an easily accessible Kindle edition, or a fun book to look at with your little reader, this generous collection might very well fit the bill.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-54-days Adobe ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. The comic strip you know and love By Paul As one might expect, this is a collection of comic strips—all Sunday editions—featuring the dog who thinks he’s a WW1 pilot trying to shoot down the Red Baron. I probably saw all these as a kid, but I still laughed again. More than that, I was intrigued by all the research put into the situations; there were mentions of cities, battles, even going on leave, from the time period that more often than not helped the jokes. It’s hard to imagine there are many people who haven’t heard of this comic strip, even if it was just through the holiday specials. That makes it hard to say much about the characters, the artwork, and so on. Everything here is as it should be.

By Wayne A McCoy 'Snoopy: Contact!' is a collection of Peanuts reprints, featuring Snoopy. I loved this collection because many of the comics featured are from the late 1960s, which I think are the golden era of the strip.The strips in this feature Snoopy as the great World War I Flying Ace, but we also see him as a vulture and a piranha. His Sopwith Camel is shot down by the Red Baron and he is stuck behind enemy lines. He is also snowed on, and his house gets burned down (including his Van Gogh!). He meets an unnamed bird that has problems flying and is confused about his direction. This bird wouldn't get a name until later in the strip, but we know him as Woodstock. Charlie Brown also makes Snoopy manager of his team, and even trades him off to Peppermint Patty for 5 players.I love Peanuts and especially Snoopy. He's always been a favorite of mine. The strips in here are reprints and colorized, but done well. There is a flip book cartoon that runs along the pages, and a section in the back with maps and flying terms from World War I, which would have been handy when I first read these strips, but it made me seek out encyclopedias to find out where Tipperary was and why it was such a long way. I think this would be a fun collection for kids, and I certainly had a great time reading it.i received a review copy of this graphic novel from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
