Here is a compelling, thought provoking and practical guide to parenting and educating today's children. It is derived from Amartya Sen's Nobel Prize-winning approach to human development which has proven highly effective at freeing people from the chains of poverty. Educators Bruce and Caitlin Howlett apply Sen's approach to child development at home and in school and offering fresh, effective ways to rescue parenting and revive education, while providing parents, teachers and caregivers with a proven foundation for creating rewarding childhoods, academic success and fulfilling lives.By incorporating the twelve key capabilities, such as sensory awareness, creative imagination, emotional and self-awareness, parents and educators can promote the three most critical tools for children's survival and success: continuous learning, problem solving, and increased knowledge and meaning. Using stories of three different types of children - Zoe, Mia and Daniel - the authors demonstrate the value of life and of the "Capabilities Approach" theory on how to cultivate inquisitive, actively engaged, motivated, perceptive and resilient children.

I am also the parent of two beautiful and capable daughters ages 9 and 11. I read a lot of books and many of them focus on learning, child development, parenting, and families. Every once in a while I come across a great book. The kind of book that makes me want to give it to every teacher and parent in my school to read ( that's what I plan to do by the way!). The kind of book I can use in a lively book club discussion. The kind of book I use for discussion at faculty meetings-earmarked, written in, and well loved. The kind of book that I go back to and reread. This is that kind of book. If you buy one book on parenting this year year, this is the one.Bruce Howlett and Caitlin Howlett have done an incredible job of digesting a huge mass of current educational and psychological research and making it accessible to the reader through stories. It is well organized, easy to read, and filled with important ideas. I absolutely love the action steps at the end of each chapter. If you are an overtired parent or an overworked teacher who says you don't have time to read another book, buy it for these action steps summaries. We all want to raise cable kids, here is a practical guide to help us support our children on their journey to independence.

By Marcia Maynard As a parent, grandparent, former Montessori teacher and head of school, and a clinical social worker working with children and families, I am so pleased that this outstanding book is available to those interested in educating and guiding the "whole child." An excellent, comprehensive and thoughtful presentation and application of helping kids develop their capabilities to become life-long learners, compassionate and caring individuals, emotionally and socially aware, and to find meaning and purpose in their lives. I highly recommend this most current and relevant perspective in assisting parents and educators in creating well-rounded, resilient children and teens.

Research confirms that most of the variance in children's success in life is due to factors outside of school. In their book, Howlett and Howlett offer parents an approach to raising youngsters that capitalizes on children's innate learning abilities. Much more than a recipe for how to raise an "A" student, Creating Capable Kids helps parents help their children grow into fully integrated human beings - problem solvers who can navigate, contribute to and take joy in our ever-changing world.
