There is nothing special or different about homosexuality. It’s like many other relationships that we human beings get into, in our need to be loved, approved and significant. Homosexuality is not biologically programmed. The role of genes, hormones, differences in brain microstructure, or any other biological blueprint or trigger is negligible. It has a great deal more to do with the things that happen to us in life and our personal reactions to them. These things happen - often early, sometimes later - in our families, our peer groups, in our most precious and intimate relationships. We are left with emotional holes that we try to fill in many different ways – some of them barely consciously. Often our sexuality gets involved. Often the things we use to heal and comfort ourselves become substitutes for what we are really needing and often addictions that we can begin to justify. But in the end they don’t meet our needs although they appeared to promise so much. The love we were made for is the intimate love of God. We were made to feel it, know it and live in it. In fact until we personally encounter it, the height and depth and breadth and width of it, we will remain empty, hungry and driven - dependent on our substiututes. Its absence will shape our motivations, behaviour and sexuality. This is what is behind homosexuality – as it is behind so much of the way the human race lives. Craving for Love, Relationship Addiction, Homosexuality and the God who Heals, is a careful and compassionate look at homosexuality and relationship dependency, its roots and its healing.

It has been in print all that time which, I believe, confirms the book's worth. Briar Whitehead describes accurately the factors which contribute to the development of both healthy and unhealthy attachment styles, and their impact on the lives of both individual and family. She doesn't end the process there but proposes how to end the cycle of addiction and heal the wounds. It has been a worthwhile resource for many of my my clients over two decades. The book does not have a narrow focus but speaks broadly of what relationship is and I often recommend it to young couples preparing for marriage. I've found also that for those who do not understand the issue of same sex attraction, it can bring both understanding, compassion and tolerance.Craving for Love outstanding because it brings understanding of 'how it all happened' and, until people have that knowledge, there can be no change.

By Priscilla J Howard This book has been THE HELP that brings a balanced and educated view to what has become a 'political hot potato'. The clarifications of the origins of what has effected so many broken lives today is an eye opener for many of us. Briar doesn’t just leave it there – she points the way to restoration for those who seek it. I been very grateful to have a resource which I can recommend to those who have been looking for real answers and receive real hope for themselves and loved ones. This book slices through the murkiness of misperception which is so precedent in our society today. Well done, and thank you Briar!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A classic packed with valuable content By PepperPete This book is packed with enlightening and helpful information. It is like a can opener, revealing the inside dysfunctions of human relationships and sexuality. For anyone feeling like they are locked and can't understand if they will ever work out this longed for, crazy desire for love, this book will act like a bolt cutter. Humanity craves for love, and looks for it in so many failed places. Briar writes about addictions, co-dependency, emotional dependency and how we can find ourselves repeating broken patterns, some may have been generational and some we taken on board all by ourselves. The book doesn't just dissect where the problems lie, but also offers hope. It has well researched discussion about LGBT relationships and supplies evidence of influences and stories of those who have walked away from being gay or lesbian. Briar doesn't treat these issues, or the response from the church in a facile way. She is honest in her critique of how people have been wronged and hurt by the church but she also sees that the church can be a place where the love of God can be found. She makes the point that it is not condemnation, or legalism that will confront a person and turn them to God, but rather his compassion and his love. After all, this is her point, that all of us are craving love, and that this love is only fully found in God.I highly recommend this book. For pastors, for families, for anyone who can relate to the title, this book will be valuable. This is one of the best books I have read on these subjects.
