It's especially helpful for anyone who plans any kind of event where multiple people attend who do not know one another. Icebreaker questions are a hugely effective method for building teamwork, camaraderie, and unity while allowing people to get to know one another. You could spend all day coming up with your own questions for effective team building, but this book is loaded with so many already that you will never need to come up with your own ever again. I love how they are divided into light, moderate, deep, and seasonal questions for any type of group in any season. This is a great book for ministry workers, business executives, small group leaders, or anyone who wishes to quickly acquaint a group of people.

Delanta God's Expectations For His Daughters: -A blunt conversationI know the author personally and she is as real as real can get when it comes to being a woman of faith and living that out in her life! This book is a GREAT tool for applying "how to's" to your everyday life. I highly recommend this book for all women who want to grow deeper and more intimate with our Lord, Jesus. Shari keeps it fun, light, funny, exciting and enlightens the reader to see how God views us, what He expects of us, and gives us an understanding that we are "Daughter's of the King!"

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'll take a "blunt conversation" with Shari any day! By Amazon Customer If you have the privilege of knowing Shari, you know that you would rather have a "blunt conversation" with Shari than a "sweet little chat" with just about anyone else. She is like a bubbling brook of love. Shari has an uncanny way of feeding us the hardest truths in ways that are readily swallowed because her delivery is so stinkin' adorable, humble, and compassionate. And this book is no different. It reads exactly like one of her inspiring Bible studies for the women of our church. You will sense no holier-than-thou condemnation from this dynamic woman of God. You will just walk away inspired by her vulnerability and wisdom gleaned from many years of "walking the talk." Her prescription for godly living is not complicated. It's a simple directive which includes all the basic disciplines that Christians know they should be practicing but often don't. Yet, with so many vivid examples of how these fundamental habits of faith-in-action have transformed her life, you can't help but be motivated to become the daughter of God that He designed you to be. In short, just read the book. You will be blessed!

Do Fathers Matter?: What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We've Overlooked, by Paul Raeburn

Review

“Raeburn's book reveals the fascinating ways in which dads matter to children, and how children matter to dads . . . at center stage here is Raeburn's ability to present research in ways both engaging and clear.” ―Jenni Laidman, Chicago Tribune

“A thought-provoking field piece on the science of fatherhood, studded with insights on how to apply it in the real world” ―Alex Stone, The New York Times (Science)

“A zippy tour through the latest research on fathers' distinctive, or predominant, contributions to their children's lives, Do Fathers Matter? is filled with provocative studies of human dads--not to mention a lot of curious animal experiments . . . [Paul Raeburn] writes clearly, untangling cause from effect, noting probabilities and inserting caveats. . . he is an ideal guide to tricky, uncertain research in a nascent field. . . . father research cuts across disciplines, and Mr. Raeburn excels at mapping the twistiness of the road ahead.” ―Mark Oppenheimer, The New York Times

“Raeburn shows with mounting evidence the role of the father and his effect on the care and nurturing of children . . . As the father of a rapidly growing and changing little girl, I gained more from Raeburn's work than all the daddy lit put together.” ―Kent Black, The Boston Globe

“[Do Fathers Matter? is] a clear-eyed march through the history of family studies and a helpful review of the new generation of research devoted to identifying the impact of dads . . . [it] gathers an impressive diversity of studies into a single, highly readable volume, covering such topics as conception, pregnancy, infants, teenagers and aging fathers.” ―Bruce Feiler, The Washington Post

“[Raeburn's] lively tour through the latest research in biology, ethology, psychology, sociology and neuroscience is intriguing.” ―Joshua Kendall, Los Angeles Times

“A valuable, compelling book for fathers, mothers, grandparents and parents-to-be -- and perhaps even for their children . . . Do Fathers Matter? uncovers a trove of good research about fathers and parenting.” ―Kevin Begos, Associated Press

“[Do Fathers Matter?] aims to dispel [the] uncertainty about fathers' roles in their children's lives...Raeburn's broad argument--that fathers have been maligned, even though they matter as much as mothers--is convincingly made.” ―Joshua Rothman, The New Yorker

“[Do Fathers Matter] is dedicated to presenting the most remarkable of those hidden studies about dads to the layperson, and arguing that the evidence suggests fathers do matter, in ways that conform to conventional wisdom as well as in some that may be surprising.” ―Andy Hinds, The Daily Beast

“A wide-ranging plea for both genders to remember that dads are not also-rans in the business of child rearing.” ―Lenore Skenazy, The New York Times Book Review

“A good, solid piece of science journalism . . . stuffed with studies showing the vital role fathers play in their children's lives from the moment of conception, through the mother's conception onward.” ―Jeffrey Kluger, Time

“[Do Fathers Matter?] is astounding in its scope and perspective on fatherhood, with some of its revelations being downright shocking.” ―Janice Shaw Crouse, The Washington Times

“A warm, enjoyable collection of stories about the science of fatherhood . . . a highly readable account.” ―Peter B. Gray, Psychology Today

“When science journalist Paul Raeburn first assessed the available research on fathers, he found the pickings decidedly slim. Scientists are now redressing the balance, and Raeburn has rounded up key findings in developmental psychology, evolutionary biology, genetics and neuroscience.” ―Nature

“I recommend Do Fathers Matter? to anyone who has ever wondered if indeed fathers are as important as mothers when it comes to setting the stage for success later in life. My prediction is you will be able to relate to Raeburn's well-developed and wonderfully executed book in a way that will change the way you feel about both of your parents.” ―Aaron W. Hughey, Bowling Green Daily News

“As food for thought, [Do Fathers Matter?] provides an ample helping for anyone willing to look at the ways fathers are portrayed, the realities of male parenting and all the gray areas in between.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Whisking readers through research in evolutionary biology, psychology, sociology, and genetics to provide a 'new understanding of the biology of fatherhood,' Raeburn is on comfortable ground discussing the hard science, such as the discovery of imprinted genes, and his personal concern about the 'medical price' paid by older fathers...Raeburn's attempt to promote the modern father as a 'similarly nurturing and attentive' parent might indeed help, as he hopes, prompt a more informed cultural conversation.” ―Publishers Weekly

“To answer the provocative question ‘Do fathers matter?,' Paul Raeburn draws extensively on cutting-edge science, animal research, neurobiology, and large-population studies. Anyone interested in parenthood, human development, and culture must read this thoughtful book.” ―Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of Happier at Home and The Happiness Project

“A must-read book for anyone who cares about the well-being of children, Do Fathers Matter? is a scientifically rigorous paean to the importance of fathers. Writing with grace and clarity, Paul Raeburn turns conventional wisdom on its head and places fathers, right alongside mothers, on a well deserved pedestal.” ―Susan Cain, bestselling author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

“A thoughtful, sensitive, and nuanced exploration of how fathers enrich the lives of children.” ―Robert E. Emery, Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law at the University of Virginia, and author of The Truth About Children and Divorce

“Dispelling one myth after another, Do Fathers Matter? offers a detailed, state-of-the-art map of a much neglected and misunderstood terrain--the unique, complex, and powerful role fathers play in the healthy development of children. From anthropological studies to the latest brain research, Paul Raeburn gives us a thorough, eye-opening, and moving account that will change your vision of men in families forever. A tour de force.” ―Terry Real, family therapist, founder of the Relational Life Institute, and bestselling author of I Don't Want to Talk About It, How Can I Get Through to You?, and The New Rules of Marriage

“Outdated myths and perceptions about fatherhood continue to exist, but Paul Raeburn's comprehensive, scientific approach lays them all to waste. If you doubt a father's importance or capabilities as a parent, this indispensable read should change your mind.” ―Doug French, cofounder, Dad 2.0 Summit

“Do fathers matter? Yes, they do, and Paul Raeburn shows us why, in the most engaging and illuminating way imaginable. Delving into psychology, biology, sociology, and history, Raeburn returns with rich insights and practical lessons for today's dads, and for the sons, daughters, and partners who love them. Do Fathers Matter? fills a gap in our knowledge about parenting, but it also opens broad new vistas that we scarcely knew existed--until the science of fatherhood, and its chronicler Paul Raeburn, came along to reveal them.” ―Annie Murphy Paul, author of The Cult of Personality Testing, Origins, and Brilliant: The Science of How We Get Smarter

“Paul Raeburn does a fantastic job of exploring the science of fatherhood as well as the myths that have affected how we think about fathers. With a keen understanding of science and a journalist's commitment to hard facts and data, he sheds light on what is known about men as fathers--and what's yet to be discovered. Ultimately, Raeburn answers the title's question, ‘Do fathers matter?,' with an emphatic yes.” ―Josh Levs, CNN journalist and "dad blogger," fathers' rights advocate, and author of a forthcoming book on modern fatherhood

By Dennis Meredith This fascinating, clearly written book contains a wealth of information about fathers’ importance to their children—both psychological and biological. Conversely, it explores how children affect their fathers—again both psychologically and biologically. The book should be a must-read for fathers, mothers, family psychologists, and any other professionals who deal with family issues. It should also be a standard text in any course about the family. The author answers the book’s title question “Do Fathers Matter?” with a resounding yes! And he offers the eye-opening evidence to back that answer up. This evidence comes from not only studies involving humans, but those on fathering in monkeys, birds, mice, rats, and voles. When I was reading the book, I marked with sticky notes the information I found most interesting and surprising. I ran out of sticky notes and ended up with a book festooned with them!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. I've been waiting for this ... By Harriet Washington book and who better to deliver the not-so-obvious answer to this question in the title? Science has too long regarded Mom as the walking incubator of her childrens' character and fortunes, while Dad was relegated to near-irrelevance. But award-winning writer Paul Raeburn delivers the definitive science governing fatherhood in a delicious, wide-ranging discussion of the "parent we've overlooked." We learn the often-surprising ways in which Dad shapes his childrens' medical fates. But Raeburn has achieved more. His evenhanded, mature tone flies above the facile jealousies that too often hijack such discussions. Early on, for example, he takes care to note that "The evidence shows that fathers make important and unique contributions to their children in many ways. It emphatically does not show that the children in families without fathers in the home are doomed to failure, or anything close to that. "Read this book: You'll learn a lot, and love it.

I enjoyed the plot and appreciated the characters that I got to meet along the way. Mr. Gamble did a good job writing a story that got me engaged and interested in what the characters were experiencing. I wanted to learn more about the protagonist and his mysterious traveling companion, along with the rebel group of vigilantes that the protagonist is hunting.I did find, though, that at times when I found myself engrossed in the reading, a typographical error would arise that distracted me from my reading. (To the credit of the author, there were times where I found myself so committed to the story that I did not think much about if I was encountering errors or not; I just read right through them.) I think that these mistakes point more to the editor/editing process than to the author himself. All in all, this was a great read. I enjoyed the plot and its characters. I look forward to reading other works Mr. Gamble produces in the future.

And everything else a city girl like Maggie feels uncomfortable around. But after filling in for a coworker and interviewing the handsome cowboy, she finds herself doing just that. Anything to save her advice column.

Despite Maggie’s two left feet, Tru is bound and determined to bring out her inner cowgirl by teaching her to ride a cutting horse, trained to separate cattle from the rest of the herd. While her riding improves, their attraction intensifies, but Tru knows he can never let her into his heart—for her own good.

In Wishing Springs, a community full of meddling but well-meaning townsfolk, Maggie discovers the home she’s always longed for. But she’s holding something back—a secret that could destroy her reputation and any future she’s ever hoped for with the cowboy she might just love.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A lot of potential By i blog 4 books Betting on Hope was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Let me get my "negatives" out of the way first . . .— My biggest hangup with this book was the way the relationship between Tru and Maggie (the main two characters) developed. During the first half of the book, I felt like everything was solely focused on looks. Beyond that, the romantic feelings didn't really make sense to me. As a friendship progressed between the two (particularly in the last fourth of the book), there were still times I didn't understand the motivations behind their actions. Perhaps more showing (instead of so much telling) would have helped move this relationship along better.— There was WAY too much going on. There were probably a dozen story lines carried on throughout the book, and at least six of them were primary stories. I felt like this hindered story development at times.— Finally, I was surprised by the number of grammatical errors throughout. I don't fault the author, but the publisher. Comma placement (or lack thereof) was my biggest frustration. Now then . . . on to the positives. I've read a couple of other books by Debra Clopton and really enjoyed them. Betting on Hope has the potential to set up Wishing Springs as the next Mule Hollow . . . and that's a good thing!— I loved the small-town charm of Wishing Springs! It's a small town in the country in Texas. Small town + middle of nowhere + western = a winner.— Beyond Maggie and Tru (who were very likeable), Wishing Springs is home to quite a few fascinating characters. Clara Lyn and Reba are compassionate busybodies (if that's possible). The twins who switch out as mayor were hilarious. And the vet with the pig who has a great bedside manner was definitely unique! My favorite, though, was Jenna. Her story was so poignant and emotional, but truly hopeful. Maggie grew a lot through knowing Jenna, which made their relationship special.— The author set up the rest of the series perfectly with Betting on Hope! I'm assuming that the next books will feature Tru's brothers, who I am quite intrigued by. And I'm desperate to know more about Rand. There just seems like there's a ton of back story there that hasn't come out. I need to know more!Although this is a bit of a mixed review, I definitely am glad I read Betting on Hope and plan to read the upcoming books in the series. [3.5 stars]I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.

It was everything I had hoped for in a $4 romance. In fact, I think I might have even picked it up at the local Goodwill, so I doubt I even spent that much coin. I honestly can't remember what the story was about other than it made me smile and laugh at a few parts too. Debra Clopton's latest novel is a step up from that series, but still has that same light-hearted, fun feel. I do believe that Mule Hollow makes a bit of a cameo appearance in the story too! I was looking for something a little different since I've been reading and watching quite dramatic tales these past few weeks. Luckily, this story hit the spot. You gotta love a knock your socks off delicious hero and that's what you get in Betting On Hope. Tru Monahan is a true romance hero. Sorry, I couldn't resist that little pun. Tall, dark, and handsome indeed! That said, I didn't quite "get" the chemistry between Tru and our leading lady, Maggie, but Betting On Hope has a few fabulous characters that tease great stories to follow in the series. You can bet that all the Monahan men will make a western romance fan out of every reader! Wink, wink.*I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.*

What a fantastic love story.I fell in love with Maggie Hope and Tru and their story, it is different this is not your everyday love story. The Characters come to life right in front of you from the very first page.I must say this is a real page turner. I never put it down until the last page.I gave this book 5 stars and I recommend it.I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

The death of someone we love cracks us open inviting us to become the person we were born to be. This is the book Tom Zuba wishes he had read after his daughter Erin died. And after his wife Trici died. It's the book he wishes he'd been handed following his son Rory's death. But Tom had to live it. First. Before he could write it. For you. In the beginning, Tom did grief the old way. Repressing, denying, pretending, numbing and stuffing every feeling and every emotion that arose. He created pain on top of pain until he began searching for a new way. A new way to do grief. Once he gave himself permission to mourn, healing began. Along the way, Tom discovered that: * Grief is not the enemy. Grief can be one of our greatest teachers. * It's the stories we tell that determine whether or not we will heal. * We will always have a relationship with the people we love that have died. * We were not born to suffer. We were born to be radiant. There is a new way to do grief. Let Tom Zuba teach you how.

Tom Zuba speaks with the authentic voice of one who knows first-hand the experience of unspeakable loss, not only as a twice-bereaved parent but as a surviving spouse as well. His words are simple but eloquent, and thus very easy to read and to comprehend ~ which is important to those in the early throes of grief, who may find it difficult to concentrate. I was able to read the entire book in one sitting ~ mainly because once started, I couldn’t put it down. The content is clinically accurate and reliable, in that it reflects the most current research and thinking of noted experts in the field of grief and loss. What is more, it is delivered in a manner that is filled with hope, wisdom and love. I will not hesitate to recommend it highly to clients and colleagues. If you know someone who is grieving, I cannot think of a more thoughtful gift than this beautiful book.

I cried through a lot of the book BECAUSE Tom was speaking directly to me. So much of my short journey is just like Tom talked about in his book. I will re read this and hopefully I can practice some of his suggestions.

By Jean Medford I so encourage anyone grieving to purchase Tom's book, because he has LIVED this....he KNOWS how it feels to mourn!! That is what caused me to search for him, and I am so thankful that I did. With help, I am FINALLY ready, after mourning the deaths of my brother, sister, niece, child, and my husband, in a short period of time.....to let go of the weight of carrying that grief around my neck. I want to move forward, I want to live again and help others live too. This book is an easy read....I'm re-reading it now, and have bought extras to pass out to others in need. Tom, you have my thanks for the rest of my life!!

It all started on a hot and unusually muggy day in L.A. That's when Miss Frump knocked on the door to Johnny Spicer's office in the First National Bank building at Hollywood and Highland. She was there on behalf of her employer, Miss Bette Davis, and the case Miss Davis needed Spicer's help with was so bizarre, it became Spicer's third novel-length caper. This time H. P. Oliver's wise-cracking Hollywood gumshoe looks deeply into those famous Bette Davis eyes when the actress hires him to recover a $100,000 piece of African tribal art stolen from her home during a party with an Oscar-winning guest list. It's solving capers like this one that earned Spicer a reputation as Hollywood's go to private eye when the chips are down. Spicer's search for the missing objet d'art, known as the Ivonya-Ngia Tembo statuette, puts him hot on the trail of two cold-blooded killers who lead him on a treacherous high-speed chase from one end of California to the other, and Johnny brings you along in the passenger seat as he tells this hair-raising tale in his own words right up to the thrilling climax when he risks life and limb for the sake of art. Along the way you'll meet many of the real-life characters and encounter the plausible, but ironic and unpredictable plot twists that are synonymous with an H. P. Oliver mystery/thriller. Oh, in case you're wondering, "Tembo" is Swahili for "elephant." Now ain't ya glad you asked?

Entertaining Mystery, Engaging History, and Witty PI Spicer By LVReader The missing objet d'art, the Ivonya-Ngia Tembo statuette, a little elephant, caused so much mayhem. No personality conflicts driving animosity, blowgun darts, bullets, a rattlesnake booby-trap, explosions and murders - just a search for a little, albeit expensive, object. The pacing is good, compelling in that it was difficult to pick a place to stop -- smooth storytelling. The story develops rapidly, but HPO also makes the characters real and interesting as people.H.P. Oliver has hit the groove with Private Detective Johnny Spicer, an enjoyable period persona that a reader of the series has come to know. Characters integral to Spicer's personal and business life are also nicely developed – we learn more about girlfriend Susan Jackson and her work as a nurse; the relationship with newcomer Sergeant Salvino starts out slightly antagonistic and develops into grudging trust. The portrayal of Bette Davis in 1940 is what I would have expected her to be like, based on my limited knowledge of her early career. Clearly HPO has done his research to hit the salient traits and to successfully weave her into the mystery. The details of the era are excellent. HPO’s historical mysteries always make me a little awestruck about how much things have changed, and how quickly time passes – what was new is now a protected landmark, or succumbed to demolition.HPO brings the period back to life as the chase for Tembo laps southern, northern and central California. Flying in a DC-3 over the Central Valley, having dinner at El Rancho, the grand building architecture of the early 20th century, automobiles, the music that defined that generation…and check out HPO’s Visualizations online for the coolest 1940 hotel room at the Shangri-La.The mystery is entertaining, the history engaging, with witty PI Spicer once again leading the way.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I couldn't put it down until I got to the end, and that ending is typical of H.P. Oliver's writing skill - I had no idea what was coming!I have enjoyed all of this author's books, so much so that when a friend said she wanted some mysteries to read during an upcoming long trip, I ordered all of H.P. Oliver's books for her, not just the Johnny Spicer ones, but his other books as well. I know she'll find them as enjoyable as I have.Every time I finish one of these books, I can't wait until the next one appears.

Suicidal thoughts had comforted Rhoda since she was a child. She never actually wanted to die. But that changed on a cool autumn day in 1969 when the lifeless body of her infant daughter was pulled from the banks of Clinch River. Distraught, Rhoda set out on a journey to get as far away from War Gap as she could. With bus tickets and the use of her exhausted legs, she made it all the way to Grand Saline, Texas. She fell on the ground in the middle of nowhere and placed a gun to her head. Only, it wasn’t the middle of nowhere. It was one of the few farms owned by a Black family in all of Van Zandt county. It was also the location of a recent murder fueled by racism. Rhoda was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was she?

Love Towe's books, and this one is no exception.Set a few decades ago, the story touches on issues of violence, mental health, racism and suicide. Now, that being said, it's not all dark and sad. It's got a fast pace, and despite being so short, some very well developed characters. Your protagonist is pitiable at times, and at others, you want to stand up and cheer for her. The supporting characters are few (other than in mentions by the 2 main characters), and flesh out the story well.I'm terrible at writing book reviews, because I am worried about spoiling a book for someone by mentioning too much. So, forgive the vagueness.Rhoda is our main character, and she's suicidal. I mean, very seriously, going to do it, suicidal. But, Ben interrupts her. Not in a kindly way, but in an angry way. He has enough issues without her baggage adding to it. He's just lost a wife. Violently. And, being a black man in a backwoods, racist area (Hello, KKK), he doesn't have even a hope for justice. In the short time span of this story, Rhoda finds a bit of a reason to keep going, and things turn out far different than I had anticipated.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping read By Cat From the first scene of the novel I felt as if I were down in the dirt with Rhoda with my fist clutching a gun to my head in an attempt to end the pain. The author did a great job of evoking the senses throughout the book. Silencer deals with issues of loss, suicide, rascism and determination, not easy topics to write or read about but was it was a compelling read and steam-rolled on towards an equally as intense closing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Silencer By renee nadabomb cherry Mental illness is a tough topic to cover. The author helps bring some understanding through this story. Mental abuse was generational in the family. Grandma Vickers was verbally abusive to her daughter, Sarah. In turn, Sarah was verbally/physically abusive to her child, Rhoda. When Rhoda meets Ben, a farmer and landowner, baby Nashe and Paumina, she encounters a more sinister form of abuse from the town folks of Grand Saline, TX during the 1960's. It's an eye opener page after page!I plan to read more works by Julie Roberts Towe and rate this novella at 3.8 stars.

From the author of Mr. Darcy's Daughters, the delightful escapades of the Darcy family continue with an enchanting story set at Pride and Prejudice's Pemberley.

When Phoebe, a young niece of Pride and Prejudice's Mr. Darcy, is shattered by an unhappy romance, she retreats to Pemberley and is joined by kind-hearted Louisa Bingley, unmarried after three London seasons. Once the young ladies are situated in the house, several handsome strangers also arrive―all hopeful of winning the girls' hearts. As preparations for the ball which Mr. and Mrs. Darcy are to give at Pemberley gain momentum, mischief and love triangles abound, making life as difficult as possible for anyone connected with the Darcy family.

Populated with authentic characters firmly rooted in Jane Austen's mores and stylistic traditions, Mr. Darcy's Dream has an unforgettable combination of romance, societal scandals, friendship, family, and marriage.

Phoebe Hawkins was twenty years old, handsome, well-born, and with a fortune of fifty thousand pounds. Here she was, at the start of her second London season, the world at her feet, and yet if there were a more miserable young lady in all of London, she would be surprised.

It was mid-morning. Phoebe was standing in the study of her family's London house, a fine building in Aubrey Square, looking across the desk at her father, Sir Giles Hawkins, with a mixture of despair and hatred.

Phoebe had been fast asleep, lost in dreams of present and future bliss, when her maid abruptly awakened her, saying that Sir Giles wanted to speak to her at once. And with the quick sensibility of a young woman in love, she knew exactly why her father had summoned her. Mr. Stanhope must have called, just as he said he would, to ask for her hand in marriage -- "As to my heart, you already have it," she had told him. Perhaps he was downstairs now, at this very moment, waiting for her. Phoebe shrugged herself into a morning gown with more speed than care, and stood, wild with impatience, while Miniver did up the hooks and coaxed a brush through her tangled hair.

Phoebe did not for a moment expect her father would raise any objection. To be sure, Arthur Stanhope was some ten years older than she, but that was no kind of an age difference. He was rich, well-bred, and would one day inherit his father's title.

So it was with utter disbelief that she heard her father's cold and definite words.

"There is no possible way that I would give my consent to your marriage to Mr. Stanhope." Phoebe's heart missed a beat. She had misheard, this couldn't be right. "I don't understand," she cried. "Mr. Stanhope wants to marry me, and I wish to be his wife. How can you refuse your consent?"

Sir Giles shook his head. "You and Mr. Stanhope are not going to marry. I expressly forbid it. It is nearly a year until you are of age, but I will not give you any hope that at the end of that period you will be able to marry him. He knows that I am not prepared to give my consent, now or in the future. You may think that when you are one-and-twenty you will be able to marry whom you please. However, should you go against my wishes in this matter, do not expect to take your fortune with you. I have control of that until you are twenty-five. You may say Mr. Stanhope will take you as you are, without a penny to your name. But he knows that at present he cannot marry you, and I told him that by the time you attain your majority, you will have forgotten him."

"How can this be? When did you speak to him? Has he been to the house this morning? Why did you not call me sooner? Why was I not allowed to see him?" Phoebe put her hand on the corner of her father's desk, feeling quite dizzy. She could not believe that this was happening to her. How could her father, her kind, affectionate father, be speaking to her in this cold and forceful way?

"Mr. Stanhope called upon me to ask formally for your hand in marriage. I told him, as I am now telling you, that there can be no question of my agreeing to him marrying you. I have asked him not to seek an interview with you, and not to approach you, or talk to you, should you meet at any of the parties and functions which lie ahead. I cannot say that he took it in good part, but he is a man with some sense of honour, and when he considers what I had to say, he will see that I am right."

Phoebe pressed her hands to her ears, wanting to shut out her father's cruel words. Why was he behaving like this? Forget Mr. Stanhope, and in the few brief months until her birthday? Impossible! She was in love with him, as he was with her, how could they forget one another? She tried to explain this to her father, but he brushed her words aside. "It is not for you to decide whether you may or may not accept an offer of marriage. While you must have a preference, an engagement is a matter for your family, for their lawyers, and for the family and lawyers of the man to whom you finally become betrothed. That man is not Mr. Stanhope."

Phoebe's dismay began to give way to anger. She was a dutiful daughter, and while she was normally on excellent terms with her father, teasing him and joking with him, knowing that he liked her playful ways, she rarely stood up against his authority, mostly because he so rarely exerted it. This was a stranger sitting in front of her, and she could not fathom what had turned him into a man that she had never seen before: stern, forbidding, and refusing to listen to her.

His face softened. "Believe me, Phoebe, I do understand something of your feelings. However, in this case you must allow me, as your father and as a man with a great deal more experience of the world, to know better than you do what is possible, and what is right. And, forgive me, but your attachment to Mr. Stanhope is of such recent standing that you will accept that any parent would be alarmed by talk of engagement. Am I not right in saying that you were unacquainted with Mr. Stanhope previous to your coming to London this time?"

"You know that to be the case, for Mr. Stanhope has been abroad. He is not a friend of our family, and I could not have met him before this year."

"Exactly. And by saying that he is not a friend of the family, you bring me to one of my principal objections to the match. You are, I suppose, aware of who his parents are?"

Phoebe was irritated by this. Yes, she did know that Mr. Stanhope's parents were Lord and Lady Stanhope. What was remarkable about that? Her father seemed to expect an answer, so she simply nodded.

He continued, "You should also be aware that Lord Stanhope, and indeed Lady Stanhope, are prominent in Whig circles. Now I am not to be suggesting that simply because a man is a member of the opposition, while I am a staunch Conservative, means that any antagonism existing within the Houses of Parliament should be carried into the outside world. Yet there is a grain of truth in the saying, 'Once a Whig, always a Whig.' And Whiggishness is not simply a matter of how a man votes in the House. It is also a matter of outlook, and going beyond politics, into the realm of morality; public morality and private morality. I do not personally think we will see another Whig government within my lifetime. That does not diminish the power and influence carried by the leading families. They have always worked behind the scenes, and by means of marriages and using family connections have exerted a force beyond what is reasonable."

What had this to do with her and Mr. Stanhope? Whatwas all this talk of Whigs? She knew that Lord Stanhope did not share her father's political views, but was that so important? Certainly, her father had always had a dislike of Whigs, as many Tories did. But this was the nineteenth century, they were not living in the Middle Ages. Was he going to try to pretend that the Hawkins family and the Stanhopes were like the Montagues and Capulets in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet?

"Fustian!"

"No, it is not fustian. You are very young, Phoebe, and do not yet know what makes the world go round. You have had a protected upbringing, I am glad to say, and know no more than is suitable for a well-bred young lady. You will not have heard the scandals and intrigue that follow every member of these Whig circles. They make light of the marriage bond..."

His voice faltered and faded away. He had touched on an unmentionable subject, and his eyes dropped as Phoebe looked straight at him. "I do believe I know something about the loosening of marriage bonds," she said.

They looked at one another for a long minute, the unspoken words clear in both their minds, the knowledge of a time when the marriage bonds of Sir Giles and Lady Hawkins had been stretched to breaking point.

The long-repressed fury finally spilled out of Phoebe as those words rang in her ears, make light of the marriage bond. "You say that to me! You who caused Mama so much unhappiness when you set up that woman as your mistress, how dare you criticise other people?"

Sir Giles had risen to his feet, his face thunderous. "That ever I should hear a daughter of mine speak in that way. You sound like a woman brought up in the gutter."

"I sound like a girl who was brought up in a household where her father had a mistress, and her mother -- "

"I forbid you to say it," said Sir Giles.

"Feelings are not to be silenced. And you condemn an entire group of people, not quoting any individual circumstances; I find it disgraceful, and uncharitable, and in the circumstances inappropriate."

"It is for me to decide what is and what is not appropriate."

They fell silent. Phoebe's chin was up and she stared at her father with such defiance that he in his turn found it difficult to say anything more. Finally, he banged his fist on to the desk. "Very well, I am sorry it has come to this. You are saying that I have condemned all the Stanhopes, Lord and Lady Stanhope, and therefore by association their son, Mr. Stanhope, merely for being Whigs. This is not so. Your Mr. Stanhope has to my certain knowledge been conducting a lengthy affair with a woman called Mrs. Vereker. You look conscious. You know the lady, an uncommonly beautiful woman, an actress of humble origins who managed to ensnare the late Mr. Vereker, and so insinuate herself into society, where by birth, manners, and behaviour she had no place."

"I do not care if Mr. Stanhope has had a mistress. He is a military man, a man of more than thirty. I do not expect to be his first love."

"No, and if I were fool enough to let you marry him, you would most certainly not be his last love. The man is a rake, Mrs. Vereker is simply the latest in a long line of paramours. I dare say she was at the party last night where you were with Mr. Stanhope. When he came this morning, he swore he had fallen in love with you; I do not consider his words to be worth anything. Were I to give my consent to your marriage, you would, he supposes, go to him as a bride with a substantial fortune. I can only su...

By Christina Boyd I would have easily given this book 5 stars if not for the niggling sensation I felt as I read it. Like all Elizabeth Aston's books, Jane Austen's original characters are not principal players -- which for in any other book would have been perfectly acceptable. And I love that all her books can stand alone. But to actually title this book MR DARCY'S DREAM was extremely deceptive. In classic Aston style, Mr Darcy makes an appearance at the end and does have the last word. But since almost the entire story is based at Pemberley, and the Darcy's arent even in residence until the day of the ball -- well, to be honest, that disappointed me. This book was very enjoyable nonetheless, if not for the deceptive title. (Yes, yes... I get it. I totally get WHAT Mr Darcy's dream is... it just wasnt what I had anticipated or hoped for when pre-ordering this book.)That said, Mr Darcy's nieces are enchanting and I easily liked them. The heart break that Georgianna's daughter, Phoebe, experiences and carries with her through out the book is intense and Aston inflicts just the right amount of angst on us to keep us reeling til the end. Which by the way, wraps up all too quickly for my liking (but then all her books do!)I found the added Whig vs. Tory ingredient to be just the right balance. Aston gives enough of the politics to make it interesting and a believable situation -- but not so much to bore us to death.Elizabeth Aston is a gifted writer and I enjoy all her books. This story, even though Mr Darcy doesnt actually show up until page 281, was a superb read that I heartily endorse!

This latest is dismally disappointing, moving me to wonder if the same author is at work here. Boring, shallow protagonists, much too much focus on the maids! and their perspectives/quibbling, and story that doesn't really kick in until at least 150 pages in. What a disaster. I had no desire even to finish. Hoping this is just an example of having a bad outing, and that Ashton is back on her game in her next effort.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Not the Same as the Rest By Whoseblues ***SPOILERS*** I agree with a previous reviewer. It's almost as if this book was not written by the same author as the other ones in this series, which I think have all been terrific. In this one, however, the main characters are insipid. The conversation is dull. And the most characteristic marker that's missing from this one is the clever plot twist all the others had that both generated the happy ending and caused the bad guy to get what was coming to him. That's probably because there isn't much of a plot in the first place, and while the bad guy does get found out, nothing is tied together very well, the story does not hang as whole cloth, and the ending is abrupt and utterly uncompelling. This one doesn't come off as worthy of the use of Jane Austen's premise, and it shows none of the social satire that the other books carry through from Austen -- it just comes off as a badly executed romance.I hope it's just a bad outing as well. Otherwise, if the author is tired of the whole thing, she'd be better off publishing no more books in the series, rather than diluting the really good start she made with more like this one.

Winner of the Bookseller Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year. Research published in the New York Times and the Huffington Post proves that talking to strangers is good for us. But how do you get people to talk to strangers? Strangers Have the Best Candy is the book that answers that question. Margaret Meps Schulte shares her own humorous, illustrated stories of chance encounters with strangers, demonstrating how such encounters lead to adventure, friendship, and serendipity. You'll meet everyday strangers, as well as larger-than-life characters like Captain Craig, the Scourge of Lake Union and Environs, and Harley and Annabelle, the not-so-mediocre music-makers of Route 66. Readers say the book is impossible to put down, but that once they finish it, they have an uncanny urge “to go out and find some strangers to talk to.”

Strangers Have the Best Candy: How talking to strangers leads to a life of crazy adventure and lasting friendship, by Margaret Meps Schulte

Review "I salute Margaret Meps Schulte for a title which combines award-winning oddity with what can only be described as very bad and potentially life-threatening advice. I also admire the sheer chutzpah and go-getting moxie of an author not afraid to put herself above the parapet--especially when a more than adequate bottle of wine is on offer."- Horace Bent, The Bookseller"It's glorious. It's genius. Go read."- Brent Cole, What's Up! Magazine"Margaret Meps Schulte relishes the revelations that she uncovers while cozying up to strangers." -The San Francisco Book Review"Mildly irreverent, decidedly humorous and utterly honest."- Jeremiah O'Hagan, Stanwood-Camano News

About the Author Margaret Meps Schulte is a national expert in talking to strangers and making friends through chance encounters. Best-known for her colorful presentations on "How to Talk to Strangers," she lives a nomadic life, meeting people in her travels by car, bicycle, and sailboat.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. What a great read! By SCPat I’ve been busy for years telling second-hand stories about Margaret Schulte’s unbelievable-strange-funny-sad-and-laugh-out-loud encounters with some of the planet’s most interesting people, so I’m glad she finally got around to pulling all these stories together in a book. What a hoot! You’ll love every minute. And her whimsical illustrations are like adding a little extra cayenne pepper to your pot of Jambalaya. So good! So spicy! So, add this book to your shopping cart right now, wait impatiently by the door until your book arrives, and then pour yourself your favorite adult beverage — and enjoy. P.S. I’m happy to admit that Margaret’s Dad has been a friend, co-teacher and co-author of mine for more than 25 years and that Margaret has thanked me in the foreword for reminding her that she’s not crazy. However, that’s another good reason to read this book — to see if I’m right. Right?

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. wine labels, carrot thinning and I have no skinny dipping alias By TOM LAMBERT I had no idea how many similarities Meps and I have had in trips throughout the USA and else wheres until I read this book. I too have driven over the roads, the Blue Highways, dozens of times to the four corners of this wonderful country. I could have written a compilation of meetings with strangers with similar insights and funny stories about the people that I have met, but I didn't. What is true for me is that Margaret has been able to say these things for me, granted different experiences, with the same distilled inner meanings and connections. I like fruit wines and I like to brew fruits wines from my own trees. I like to share what I produce and it really makes it more fun to have a unique label to put these wines on it. Margaret showed up one day as a stranger to help design labels for me for my Pear-A-Dice D'Anjou pear wine or my Cherry Lee Bing cherry wine and we are strangers no longer. That is the essence of the Strangers Have The Best Candy. When we do something, thinning a long row of carrot sprouts or designing labels or skinny dipping in a cool river on a hot day, it is never doing just the action. It is the alchemy of making connections with the other person that gives depth and richness in our lives. Strangers anecdotes remind me of my own stories so that I can relive them again. I'll bet that you will do the same.
