Jeremiah Lee never imagined a black man could work on the other side of the law before he was arrested by Marshal Fredrick Williamson. Left in the desert to die by the gang that once saved his life, Jeremiah Lee prepares himself for death. He is both saved and taken hostage by US Marshal Williamson, the marshal determined to bring the gang to justice. As they track Jeremiah's gang through the southwest United States, the pair meet several characters who change their understanding of the black man's place in the United States and their understanding of each other. After surviving gun fights, saloon brawls, attempted lynches, and a strange Native American man known as Cherokee Joe, Jeremiah faces off with a brother very different from the one he left behind.

I enjoyed the plot and appreciated the characters that I got to meet along the way. Mr. Gamble did a good job writing a story that got me engaged and interested in what the characters were experiencing. I wanted to learn more about the protagonist and his mysterious traveling companion, along with the rebel group of vigilantes that the protagonist is hunting.I did find, though, that at times when I found myself engrossed in the reading, a typographical error would arise that distracted me from my reading. (To the credit of the author, there were times where I found myself so committed to the story that I did not think much about if I was encountering errors or not; I just read right through them.) I think that these mistakes point more to the editor/editing process than to the author himself. All in all, this was a great read. I enjoyed the plot and its characters. I look forward to reading other works Mr. Gamble produces in the future.
