Disappointing follow-up to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" By rebel_scum This is the second of three mystery novels (but the third one that I read) starring Poe's C. Auguste Dupin character, often credited with being the first fictional detective. I found this one far inferior to the other two Dupin stories, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter". Dupin is a wonderful character, and fans of Sherlock Holmes will notice the similarities and the debt Holmes owes to Poe and Dupin, but this story was quite frankly rather boring. It consisted mostly of several long, boring discourses regarding logic, the merits of chess versus draughts, etc. After reading the first two Dupin stories, I was very excited for this, but I actually found it tough to make it through.

By Kindle Customer Poe's style is somewhat dark and spooky, so if that is what you like, I think you will like this. I Love the fact it is available on Kindle, because it makes it much more convenient to read..If you like dark and spooky, it is perfect!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. So-So By Julie Omar has one priority in life: work. If it doesn't have to do with his business, he wants nothing to do with it. Then comes along the client that wants to know he has a life outside of work and Omar sets out to find himself a fake fiance. He looks no further than his assistant, Devi. Devi really wants no part in this massive deception but after Omar assures her that he will come clean after the client realizes how valuable pairing up with Omar would be, she relents. Neither was ready for what happened next.I thought that the summary sounded cute on this one and I couldn't wait to dive into it. Honestly, it was ... okay. I didn't really relate in any way with Omar or Devi. They seemed like shallow characters that didn't have anything to them. Omar works hard and loves working hard and works to love work and loves to love work. Got it. But what else? There were these little hints dropped about his background but nothing was ever really fleshed out. I enjoyed his character but I just didn't know him. And I felt the same way about Devi. And then them together ... just didn't seem realistic. For a dude who has his head only focusing on business and it had been that way for forever ... I just don't see him falling for some chick after one day. I mean, come on. Can people fall in love that fast? Sure. But the way that his character was set up, it just didn't seem authentic.The story was pretty good. Although, there was a moment when things escalated so quickly that I actually wondered if I missed a chapter somewhere. Again, it just didn't seem natural to the flow of the story that was established in the first chapter.Basically, I felt conflicted about this one. It wasn't my favorite but it wasn't the worst either. I will probably give the author another shot on her next novel because I did enjoy the story line.* I received this novel in exchange for an honest review *

He's lives and breathes work. The last thing he has time for is fun or relationships. He's never had a problem with the way he lives his life until he needs to land a family-oriented client. He's at a loss of how to obtain this client. That is, until his assistant becomes the perfect plan.... Devi is the life of the party. She's always up for a good time and is willing to try anything once. So, Omar comes up with the perfect solution to his problem. Ask Devi to be his fake fiancee. I mean what could possibly go wrong??A Friendly Engagement was a quick, fun read for me. You can never go wrong with the fake fiancee story-line. I enjoyed the chemistry between Omar and Devi. I found myself asking why it took them so long to open their eyes to each other. Omar and Devi were really cute together and it was fun watching them navigate their "relationship".There are a few things that didn't quiet work for me. With this story, my biggest problem was the pacing. I would have liked to have seen Omar and Devi's relationship develop a little more. I mean, I understand that they've worked together for a long time, but I feel like their feelings of love developed too soon. Almost like a case of insta-love, but not because they've had a long working relationship. Also, I felt like some of the resolutions were resolved a little too quickly for my taste. Without going into too much detail or spoiling anything, there is some groveling that takes place, but I would have liked to have seen Omar work a little more for Devi's forgiveness. That's just my opinion.Other than that, I thought this book was an enjoyable read. Honestly, you can't go wrong with a fake-fiancee/ friends-to-lovers type story. A Friendly Engagement was fun, sexy read. It had some good angst, even though I wanted more, and also a very interesting twist. This is my first book by Christine Warner and I'd definitley be interested in checking out more of her books in the future.*I was provided an ARC copy of this book via Entangled Publishing and NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review*

Omar and Devi have a great boss/employee/friends relationship and you could feel the fun loving chemistry between them. Omar has his eyes set on a client he wants in his financial firm but this man is looking for a planner who is family oriented. That is so not Omar…he is all business and no play. Family and love are just distractions he wants no part of. Omar realizes to get the opportunity to present his financial plans for this client he needs a fake-fiancé and who better than his right-hand gal, his trustworthy and loyal assistant, who is also his best friend. Devi is a live-in-the-moment free spirit who is constantly trying to get her uptight boss to live a little, to let go and have fun sometimes. She is very hesitant about creating this lie and deceiving their co-workers and her friends, but Omar ultimately convinces her all will be ok and everyone will understand when they come clean about the ruse after they land the contract. They are already affectionate with each other but when they have to add romance to make their engagement believable, they are both taken back at how right it feels to be together.I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Friendly Engagement. I loved the banter between the two. You could feel the chemistry between them. Once they added the sexual, flirty fun in their relationship the sparks flew! There was so much sexual tension, you could cut it with a knife. When they finally gave in to their desires, oh my, talk about some of the most sensuous, hot, sexy scenes written. WOW. It’s amazing what you find when to open your eyes, step back, and look at what’s been right in front of you. There is a great twist, tons of comedy and laughter, off-the-charts sex, heartache, and of course….love.Definitely a great book to pick up! I really enjoy Christine Warner’s writing style and am looking forward to reading more from her.

While some books leave you panting, others are compelling, because, like breath, we MUST breath it in, for in that breath, there is life. This book was like the latter. I read it, cover to cover, with hardly a break taken. As I closed the cover, I felt a melancholy peace come over me. I want these characters in my life, and now, for my time spent with them, Fawn, Alina, Luisa and Jon are there, in my memories. And I am better off for their company. The burdens carried by women are often borne quietly, mostly silently. We see glimpses of women's pain and frustration, but do not know how to ask what the story is behind those emotions. Many books focus on the gut-wrenching moments and celebrate survival, or they skim over "the event" and focus on the rebuilding in so much celebration that women become caricatures.We need more books that help show the generations how to acknowledge one another's realities and the ways our pasts affect our presents. Functional families take brokenness and create continuity so that stability becomes normal, in spite of the broken parts. This book manages to show a mother who manages this splendidly. Mothers and daughters, read this book and start your own conversations about your own stories. Fathers and sons, read this to understand the women you love, and through story, learn how vital you are to the families you belong.

The author beautifully depicts the struggle to find the balance between figuring out his own life and being present for his father. I would highly recommend anyone read this book!

Highly recommended By Matt I would highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with the challenges of being diagnosed with, or caring for someone who has been diagnosed with, Lewy Body Dementia, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc. It is a very personal, touching and relatable story of the author’s struggles to take care of a parent suffering from lewy body dementia while trying to balance the daily demands of his own life. As it notes, it is told through the eyes of a young man which seems to differentiate this book from many of the others I’ve seen on this subject which are often geared toward older caregivers or are much more clinical. That said, though it is from a young man’s perspective, I think it would be a helpful read for caregivers of all ages as many of the challenges are universal regardless of age. I found it to be informative and, though sad at times, also uplifting to see how the disease brought a son even closer to his father.

By Diane Marsh As a Community College Professor, I think that this is a very valuable book and I have recommended it to our Crisis Counseling Committee to have available for students going through similar life situations. This very touching story reveals how a family copes with the loss of a family member when the mind fades away before the body dies. I went through this experience as a mature adult with my Grandmother (my Mother's Mother) in her nineties, but it was interesting to note how some feelings were the same and others different for this young man. Daniel gives a very honest look into his feelings which allows us to share the joys and sorrows.My Mother also read this book. She is retired from a career as a Therapist and found the book very interesting. She felt that this book would be very beneficial to anyone of any age going through a family member or friend with any type of Dementia. She found the story of the loving family very touching and knows they must be very proud of their fine son Daniel.

About the Author Peter David is a prolific author whose career spans nearly two decades. His recent novels include "Tigerheart: A Tale of the Anyplace" and "Darkness of the Light". He is also renowned for his work as a comic-book writer, including the "Incredible Hulk", "Spider-Man", and the Fallen Angel. He is the cocreator and author of the bestselling Star Trek: New Frontier series for Pocket Books.Marz left a promising journalism career and began writing comics.Since 1965, Roy Thomas has been writing for movies, television, and especially comic books. With notable runs on Avengers, X-Men, Conan the Barbarian, Incredible Hulk, and Star Wars; he served as a Marvel editor from 1965-80 and editor-in-chief from 1972-74. He currently edits Alter Ego and writes two online Tarzan strips as well as the occasional comic book. Hulk's First Epic Collection is Incredible By Stephen Vincent Kempton Marvel's first Incredible Hulk Epic Collection is surprisingly a continuation of an old series of trades Marvel Visionary Peter David which attempted to reprint all of Peter David's excellent and lengthy run on The Incredible Hulk. These collections started in 2004 and volume #8 of Marvel Visionary Peter David came out in 2011. Now after four years this volume continues right where that series left off.This collection includes Hulk #397 to Hulk #406 plus two Hulk Annuals #18 and #19 . Plus a story from Marvel Holiday Special #2 and portions of three other Annuals which featured the continuation of The Defenders Return storyline. All of these originally cover dated 1992 and 1993.The good news for any of you that bought the Epic Collection just prior to this Daredevil: Widow's Kiss is that Marvel had gone back to thicker pulpy white paper and not continued with the glossy ultra thin stock paper. We also get numbered pages again, which were also missing from the DD volume. In all this book contains 470 pages all sharply printed in beautiful color.Here is my one format suggestion . A single Who's Who page after the contents page would be very helpful. Peter David's books feature a Giant size supporting cast. Knowing who all the members of The Pantheon are would have increased my enjoyment since they are integral to the story.The book starts out with Hulk Annual #18 . Well in 1992 and for several years prior Marvel had been boosting their lagging Annual sales by doing crossovers. So we get the main story which is the first part of the Return of The Defenders story and four small stories. The smaller stories range greatly in quality. The best is the lead story by Peter David and Travis Charest which is the Hulk Vs. The Thing. The other not as successful stories are built around the Hulk's supporting cast with one each for Rick Jones, The Pantheon and Doc Sampson.As for the main story in Hulk Annual #18 it is beginning of The Return Of The Defenders. Part one is by Peter David and Kevin Maguire. It is a very fun story with Rick Jones getting a Sub-Mariner personality. Now here is the strange part Marvel also reprints parts 2, 3 and 4 from the Sub-Mariner, Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange Annuals . This is strange because previously in these connected Annuals the Epic Collection had only reprinted the lead character chapter and given you either a recap or a some text telling you how it finishes. See Captian Americs : Streets Of Poison. This turns out to be a Catch-22 . If they had not reprinted it, I would have been disappointed since David's first chapter was so good. But now having read it I wish they would not have included it. The next three chapters are pretty darn bad and almost incomprehensible. I normally like Ron Marz and Roy Thomas but this is a train wreck. The art also takes a big plunge. This is the low piont of the volume.That's OK , because it rebounds nicely with Peter David's return and the five part Ghosts Of The Past storyline which runs from Hulk #397 through the oversized Hulk #400 which has two chapters. Dale Keown pencils parts 1 and 2, Jan Duuresma on parts 3 and 4 and Chris Bachalo on part 5.This Ghosts Of The Past story involves The Leader , The U-foes and the death of Rick Jones girlfriend Marlo. Peter David reveals that he wrote this poignant story while recovering from his own loss when a friend died.Bobbi Chase or who ever edited this original issue of Hulk #400 should be embarrassed with the contents page reprinted here on page 223. First it lists the pin-up reprinted on page 264 as being by Ernie Colon , it is not, instead it is the work of Ernie Chan (also know as Ernie Chua ). Then it says Mark Farmer's pin-up on page 224 is Hulk and Juggernaut when it is clearly Rhino instead.In Hulk #401 (still penciled by Jan Duuresma ) loose ends are tied up with U-foes. Also Agamemnon goes on walkabout and the Hulk is put in charge of The Pantheon.Next we get the three part story running in Hulk #402 through Hulk #404. It guest stars The Avengers and features the Red Skull and the Juggernaut as villains. With issue #403 Gary Frank becomes the new regular artist.In Hulk #405 the Hulk must resolve a love triangle in The Pantheon. While Hulk #406 features the return of Doc Sampson and guests Captain America. Plus we get a resolution to the Marlo sub-plot.Next we get another Hulk Annual this one #19. Well in 1993 Marvel had finally gotten over the crossovers and moved on to Polly Bagged Trading Cards as a gimmick. Each Annual debuted a new villain and that villain got a trading card and at least one story. Hulk's totally forgettable villain was Lazarus. We get Two Hulk versus Lazarus stories then a fun little story by Green Hornet Scribe Ron Fortier about a town named Hulk.We close out with a Doc Sampson story from Marvel Holiday Special #2. Plus we get an additional fourteen pages of extras like ads, pin-ups , original art and a Hembeck story.Peter David's time on Hulk marks a very long stretch of High Quality on the Hulk book. I hope Marvel reprints more later stuff and re-collects the Early Marvel Visionary books as Epic Collections. This is a fantastic era for Greenskins and should be in print for everyone to read.My Highest Recommendation.

I am not a fan of Maguire's loose cartoonish art style and I never particularly enjoy the silly "oh my By Graham G I've been reading the Incredible Hulk Epic Ghost of the Past by Peter David this past week and these stories really take me back to my early high school comic book collecting days! I haven't read these issues since they were originally published over 20 years ago! Below are some of my takeaways:The annual crossover stories at the beginning of this volume are as weak as I remember them. I am not a fan of Maguire's loose cartoonish art style and I never particularly enjoy the silly "oh my! I have someone else's brain in my body!" shtick they pull with Namor and Rick Jones. I skimmed the Hulk chapter, then skipped the Namor, Dr. Strange, and Silver Surfer annuals totally before diving straight into the Incredible Hulk issues.I'd forgotten how much of a horror movie slant the Ghost of the Past arc had at the time and it holds up remarkably well in re-reading. I can still recall the disappointment I felt when Dale Keown left the book immediately before the big 400th anniversary issue for greener pastures over at Image Comics. To me, Keown is one of my all time favorite Hulk artists (along with Gary Frank also featured in this volume!) Keown really set the standard for the Hulk's visuals in the early 1990s. Surprisingly however, Jan Duursema's art holds up remarkably well, far better than I recall it doing so. You can see she was trying to ape Keown's style in a few areas but it's sold storytelling and really hits the emotional story beats when required. Considering the dark nature of the content in the early issues, that's no small task. By the end of the volume, Gary Frank comes on board, the book looks great again, reads great, & we the readers get an extremely emotionally satisfying ending.This volume sums up nicely what I miss so much about Peter David's Hulk comics compared to modern Hulk comics: Great artwork, with an equally great cast of characters & story that never takes its readers intelligence for granted. The subplots pay off gradually and organically, nothing is rushed, and in the end the reader feels satisfied and completely invested in the characters. Keep 'em coming Marvel! I'd buy one Hulk by David volume a month!

Kane Israel Maya's ability to break things down that might seem complex into simple forms stands apart from other books on this topic. This ability eliminates any intimidating factor when using these types of techniques. He makes the process very "do-able." I enjoyed learning about how the subconscious affects birthing.
