I'm naturally someone who represses their anger, and it was very helpful to learn that this is not healthy for me, even less healthy than outbursts of anger. I love how the author describes the physiology of getting angry and what it does to your health. It was good to hear from someone that you can't avoid all situations that make you angry and you can't always avoid becoming angry. The part really struck home for me, but I think this book is for anyone who has anger issues, whether they're suppressed or whether they are things that you express regularly, both verbally and physically. While I read it because I feel I don't express anger well, this book is excellent and mostly geared to people who let too much anger control them. I will be reading this book again in the future.

Now he’s been and gone and done it! After half a century or so, George East has finally got to grips with an issue which has bemused, infuriated and fascinated men since Adam and Eve had their first falling-out. Why do women think and act as they do? In the latest in the Naked Truth series, THE NAKED TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN treads in dangerous territory as the author tries to answer eternal questions like: Why do women always ask their man for an opinion of how a dress looks - and then ignore what he says? Why do they painstakingly inspect and try on dozens of shoes/dresses/handbags - and then buy the first one they looked at? Why do women say that love is more important than money, then judge how much a man loves her by the price of the engagement ring he buys her? Every Man should have this to present to his partner. Or just to read and chuckle to himself in a corner. We blokes will probably never figure women out, but it is a part of the male psyche to try and explain the inexplicable. That’s why men do all the inventing and clever stuff while the women lie around and get in touch with their feelings. A Note from the Editor: *Whether you are a far-out feminist, a manly misogynist a manic misandrist or strictly neutral, please join the fray by letting us and Amazon customers know exactly what you think of The Naked Truth About Women by leaving a review when you have read this book. And if you are female, please also let us know what annoys you about typical male behaviour and attitudes. We need the ammunition for the next book in the Naked Truth series, which will be all about the male of the species!

He was the quintessential ex-pat and there's never been a more entertaining one. He wrote a series of wonderful books about his life in France and I read and loved all of them. And he wasn't just a stand-up comedian, either. He was a thoughtful observer of human nature and I loved his optimism. Through thick (his waistline) and thin (his finances) he soldiered on gallantly, never giving in to anger or self-pity, even when the French out-witted him time after time and the French laws, regulations, and customs beat him up. His life was precarious, but he was a man who was living the life he wanted and sharing it with the woman he wanted by his side. When this book appeared, I gave a happy cry and plunked down $1.50 (not a lot, I'll grant you, but it's the principle of the thing, dammit) only to find myself slogging through the bitterest, angriest diatribes I'm been assaulted with in some time. If I wanted to listen to bile, we have an election going on over here.George has gotten it into his head that women have taken over the world and are systematically destroying men. At first I thought it was a joke. After all, this is a guy who's written some hilariously funny stuff. But the longer you read the more apparent it becomes that, for once, old George is in dead earnest. He quotes a LOT of statistics (surprising because math has never been George's strong point, just ask his banker.) However, he's learned the first rule of statistics - if the statistical study doesn't support your argument, ignore it. So we never hear about the statistics that show that women still earn much less than men in similar careers or the ones that show that women with jobs work another full-time job caring for their families while their down-trodden husbands spend a few hours weekly on shopping, cooking, cleaning, and child-care. And of course we don't really NEED a statistical study to show that politics, Big Business, medicine, and law are still over-whelmingly dominated by males. We already know that.Go back to France, George. Even if you can't really afford to do so. Even if you starve to death (and that'll take a while, buddy.) You've written a depressing book full of bilge and bile and nastiness and almost NO laughs. Meanwhile, I can answer your question as to why women cry. It's because we have to deal with men. That's an easy one, but you DO pose one hypothetical question which I feel incapable of debating. "Why do so many women say that their husbands do not spend enough time with them, yet complain when they are in the bath and he comes in for a dump?"You say women talk too much, George, but I'm speechless.

The German is a little harder than other books in German that I have read. One word that was only used once in the whole book was unknown to a German national with a German degree in literature. The word was Zote which means a dirty joke.My wife who just finished the original version in English absolutely loved the book.We both recommend it!

Increasing numbers of parents grapple with children who are acting out without obvious reason. Revved up and irritable, many of these children are diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar illness, autism, or other disorders but don’t respond well to treatment. They are then medicated, often with poor results and unwanted side effects. Based on emerging scientific research and extensive clinical experience, integrative child psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Dunckley has pioneered a four-week program to treat the frequent underlying cause, Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS). Dr. Dunckley has found that everyday use of interactive screen devices — such as computers, video games, smartphones, and tablets — can easily overstimulate a child’s nervous system, triggering a variety of stubborn symptoms. In contrast, she’s discovered that a strict, extended electronic fast single-handedly improves mood, focus, sleep, and behavior, regardless of the child’s diagnosis. It also reduces the need for medication and renders other treatments more effective. Offered now in this book, this simple intervention can produce a life-changing shift in brain function and help your child get back on track — all without cost or medication. While no one in today’s connected world can completely shun electronic stimuli, Dr. Dunckley provides hope for parents who feel that their child has been misdiagnosed or inappropriately medicated, by presenting an alternative explanation for their child’s difficulties and a concrete plan for treating them.

Reset Your Child's Brain: A Four-Week Plan to End Meltdowns, Raise Grades, and Boost Social Skills by Reversing the Effects of Electronic Screen-Time, by Victoria L. Dunckley MD

Review “Impressively researched, eye-opening, and eminently practical, Reset Your Child’s Brain is an invaluable contribution to any parent’s library. Dr. Dunckley’s plan is sure to provide relief to a great many children — and their families.”— Craig Malkin, PhD, instructor in psychology, Harvard Medical School, and author of Rethinking Narcissism“Readers will . . . feel relieved to have such a helpful guide to teaching children that there is more to life than staring at a screen.”— Publishers Weekly“Dr. Victoria Dunckley has given every child psychiatrist and pediatrician in America a wonderful gift. This book gives us a tool to share with the parents of the millions of children in the US who are agitated, unfocused, and out of control. She also answers the question about why this problem has accelerated in the last decade: it is screen-time, not a lack of Ritalin. I completely agree with her premise and her interventions. Thank you!”— Scott Shannon, MD, integrative child psychiatrist, past president of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, and author of Please Don’t Label My Child"Many parents won’t want to hear this, but child psychiatrist Dunckley makes a compelling case for an 'unrecognized disorder' she terms Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS). From kids who melt down without cause, refuse to look people in the eye, are 'wired but tired,' or otherwise just hole up in their rooms all day, Dunckley’s research identifies the common thread of dysregulation owing to screen use and orders an immediate electronic 'fast.' Showing how ESS affects brain chemistry, arousal, sleep, and behavior, to name but a few outcomes, the author moves into a four-week step-by-step plan to 'reset' a child’s brain, resulting in better focus and organization, improved compliance, and more mature social interactions."— Library Journal“Parents will probably recoil from the idea of taking their children’s cell phones and laptops away from them. Let them know that Dunckley acknowledges the mountain that she is asking them to climb and, not only gives them thorough reasons for doing it, but also a highly detailed plan for accomplishing it.”— Retailing Insight“This practical and easy-to-read guide is a much-needed wake-up call for this digital age. Buy Reset Your Child’s Brain for your family, your school, and your local library.”— Kerry Crofton, PhD, cofounder and executive director of Doctors for Safer Schools and author of A Wellness Guide for the Digital Age“This book looks at how electronic media use can affect the central nervous system long after the offending device has actually been used — an effect similar to that of drug addiction. It presents new studies that show how, as with drug use, functioning may not be impaired immediately, and in some cases it may even improve initially but then becomes worse. Finally, Dr. Dunckley outlines issues in diagnosis, in assessment, and most important, in treatment for battling and resetting the brain to overcome the rapidly emergent condition of Electronic Screen Syndrome.”— Dr. Kimberly S. Young, founder and director of the Center for Internet Addiction and NetAddiction.com“One of the problems worldwide that relates to this book is sleep deprivation. This has many consequences and — to put it bluntly — makes the sleep-deprived person fat, lazy, stupid, and depressed! The more that books like this expose the problem, the sooner we will be moving to a higher and more secure state of well-being!”— John J. Ratey, MD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, and author of Spark“Victoria Dunckley makes a convincing case that parents should be very concerned about their children’s constant exposure to electronic screen–based entertainment. Citing medical research as well as her work with hundreds of patients, Dr. Dunckley explains how electronic media overwhelm children’s nervous systems and impair their physical and mental functioning. Families who follow her practical approach to discontinuing electronic screen-time will see dramatic improvement in their children’s health and behavior.”— Jessica Solodar, award-winning medical journalist and former medical writer for Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry and the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation“Parents are constantly asking, ‘What are the effects of screen use on my kids, how much is too much, and how can I regulate the use of screens by my kids?’ Finally, thanks to Dr. Dunckley’s Reset Program, parents have the answers and the tools to work on a solution!”— Ann Corwin, PhD, MEd, parenting education consultant, TheParentingDoctor.com

I am embarrassed to say that my 3 and 7 year old boys were playing the iPad up to 10 hours a day (they each had their own. I can't even believe that, but they did). I had suspected for some time that the iPad was particularly disruptive to my 3 year old, but I truly didn't think I could 'survive' without the quiet that the tablets provided. How would I get anything done? What would the kids DO with all that time? After googling 'is the iPad bad for kids' and stumbling upon Dr. Dunckley's website and book, I made the decision then and there to take it away. We actually started the fast before I was able to read thr book! The results have been dramatic with my 3 year old.We went from:- 3-5 meltdowns a day- struggling with transitions between activities (putting the iPad down to eat, bathe, leave the house, go to bed, etc),- aggression towards his 1 year old brother,- and just general instability in his personality (constantly walking on eggshells around him)to a child who:- has 1 meltdown or less per day (he routinely has days without meltdowns and it's MUCH more mild when it does happen),- transitions are no longer an issue and do not cause meltdowns- he plays gently and enthusiastically with his younger brother; he even asks if he can hold the baby now!- his personality is so much more even keeled; small things no longer set him off or trigger meltdownsMy 7 year old used to routinely complain how BORED he was (after he had watched every video he was remotely interested in on YouTube). I would say "You have a room full of toys your never play with. Go find something." and he would respond with how boring ALL his toys were and there was nothing fun to do. He now plays enthusiastically with his toys, pretending with everything from Star Wars to building with blocks, to drawing (without using the iPad to think of things to draw). We now have a stash of board games to play in the evenings rather than stare at screens and I've found that I absolutely TREASURE the extra time I spend engaged with them. It sounds sappy, but it's true. I was so worried that taking the iPads away would mean so much more work for me, finding things to keep them occupied and it first, it was more work. But 4 weeks in, they now find their own activities to keep them busy and entertained. I can't believe what a complete turnaround it's been for us. This book was a lifesaver for my family.

This has exhausted them and left them surly and unhappily bored looking for the next electronic fix By Leonard Oestreicher Required Reading for 21st Century ParentsElectronic screen stimulation has transformed our lives in the early 21st century. It has been embraced by parents and educators with an unquestioning blind optimism and the kind of faith usually reserved for messiahs. We have handed the lives of our children to the alter of technology surrendering them to endless self-stimulation and simulated excitement. This has exhausted them and left them surly and unhappily bored looking for the next electronic fix. They have become further and further disconnected from life as it is really lived. They are left without the skills they need to deal to enjoy real life with its kaleidoscope of interpersonal relationships all taking place in a four dimensional world full of nature and other livings agents.Victoria Dunckley’s book is a corrective and antidote to the corrosive view that technology only brings good things to children and young adults. Again and again she demonstrates convincingly with case reports from her own practice of child after child damaged by electronic screen stimulation. Robust connections are made to a long list of current mental illnesses afflicting children today. AHD, ADHD, bipolar are just a few of the conditions ravaging the lives of youth in numbers never seen before the introduction of this electronic screen-centric lifestyle that our children are living today. Victoria Dunckley’s wonderful discovery is that these very same conditions can be ameliorated or indeed cured by the simple expedient of by a ‘Screen Reset’.During a ‘Screen Reset’ all interactive electronic screen stimulation is removed from the child’s life. For three weeks the child’s brain is allowed to rest and recover from the relentless stimulation of these screen devices. Much of the book goes into wonderful detail on how a parent might run a ‘Screen Reset’ in their own house. After the ‘Screen Reset’ parents will witness a transformation, a changed version of their child, a version not driven into the ground by these soulless machines. And the changes the author describes are rapid, dramatic and sorely needed.Unfortunately is not easy to performing a ‘Screen Reset’ in the world we live in. I doubt there is anyone else in the world who has helped more families perform this operation than Dr. Dunckley. She shares step by step what a parents needs to do to accomplish this undertaking. Sensible well thought out advice just keeps coming and coming. For instance, what do you say to the schools, your friends, your family, and even your ex before you start a ‘Screen Reset’? The author spells it out so nicely. She ends the book with a delicious roast of the school systems, so blithely swallowing up the marketing the high technology industry has pitched to them at the expense of the future of our children, our society, and really our civilization.Educators, pediatricians, psychiatrists and parents please awaken and read this marvelous book about how the meet the challenges of the raising real children in a world dominated by dangerous screen devices with their electronic games and other traps for the young and unwary.

By Lisa Dunckley Disclosure: I am related to the author, but, although I knew that she was writing a book, I had never seen or read any part of it until I purchased it from Amazon. I am...blown away, to say the least. The amount of research, and the mountains of meticulously compiled evidence that prove the dangers of screen time is overwhelming. I always knew that I had a harder time concentrating on anything that I read on a computer or tablet or phone, than on an actual book. I feel like I have to read it multiple times, and many times it's easier just to print something out. I never knew why before!I don't have children, but I'm around them a lot, and have found it baffling why the kids who live on horse ranches or vineyards are so much calmer and less hyperactive than the kids who live in townhouses. We would joke that kids who have "chores" are too tired to misbehave! In reality, these kids are burning up much less energy "helping" Daddy pick tomatoes than the hyper kids are burning up having a temper tantrum, so why are they calmer and more able to focus? MUCH less screen time! The kids I know who are enjoyable to be around spend very little time looking at a screen. They are reading actual books, playing with pets, climbing trees, being led around on ponies. There have been studies in the news lately about brain changes, one that comes to mind was about how the use of GPS locators has caused the "map reading" part of the brain to shrink. In people who have never driven without a GPS, they never DEVELOP the map reading ability, and it shows in brain MRIs. And people who continue to learn new things when they are senior citizens are less likely to develop Alzheimer's--and the results are visible on the brain scans. So we know that our actions can cause parts of our brain to grow or shrink--why is it a shock to find out that with children, whose brains are still growing and being "shaped", that actions and behaviors have a HUGE impact?I feel like reading this book gives me "permission" to print something out instead of forcing myself to read it on the screen, and also explains why reading a BOOK is relaxing but reading on my phone screen is not. I think that the brain reset with the "screen fast" is an invaluable resource for everyone, but most especially parents of children who are diagnosed with ADHD, Asperger's, etc. I predict that some of the parents will be in denial about this, however, because the idea of removing the electronic "drug" that their child is addicted to sounds daunting, and obviously the more the child is addicted, the worse the backlash will be--luckily, the results make it worthwhile!

The actress, comedian, media darling, and New York Times best-selling author picks up where she left off in Ali in Wonderland, dissecting modern life - and this time, on a mission of self-improvement - in a series of laugh-out-loud comic vignettes.

Moved by a particularly inspirational tweet one day, Ali Wentworth resolves to live by the pithy maxims she discovers in her feeds. What begins as a sort of self-help project quickly turns into something far grander - and increasingly funnier - as the tweets she once viewed with irony become filled with increasing metaphysical importance. And thus begins her "Unhappiness Project".

It's not long before Ali expands her self-improvement quest to include parenting, relationship, fitness (or lack thereof), and dieting advice. The results are painfully (at times literally) clear: when it comes to self-help, sometimes you should leave it to the professionals.

At once endearing and hilarious, thoughtful and absurd, Happily Ali After is a thoroughly entertaining collection from "the girlfriend you want to have a glass of wine with, the one who makes you laugh because she sees the funny and the absurd in everything" (Huffington Post).

A fun read on the absurdity of a fascinating life reinvented By outwest For those who remember Ali from In Living Color, we already know her as a brilliant comedienne. As a writer, I have to say that her wit was new to me. This book was simply absurdly funny. This book weaves throughout the absurdities of her fairly extraordinary life, and her touch in recalling even the simple things makes for a good laugh. This books is focused on her anxieties and misgivings that seize her as she faces as she approaches her 50th birthday. Her method of trying to reinvent herself and the sometimes unfortunate remedies she resorts to in trying to overcome them lead from one funny story to the next. The stories touch on a wide range, from fishing to Percocet (you just have to read it), to driving craziness, to failed attempts at anti aging regimen. Its a fun easy reading book, with short chapters suitable for a quick read. Does it translate to everyone? Maybe not, but life and ageing is somewhat universal, and the stories really are funny as heck.A good, light, read.

Baby sleep training By Lorence Sleep training is the process of helping a baby learn to get to sleep and stay asleep through the night. Some babies seem to develop a regular sleep routine quickly and easily. But many others have trouble settling down to sleep — or getting back to sleep when they've been wakened — and they need help and guidance along the way.

While a number of books exist which deal with various aspects of the postnatal experience - breastfeeding, exercise, motherhood, post-partum depression - this is the first complete source of information on what a woman experiences both physically and emotionally in the days, weeks and months after childbirth. It is also the only book in its field which balances medical advice with practical tips and numerous references to alternative remedies. From Sylvia Brown, a mother, and Mary Dowd Struck, RN,MS,CNM, a nurse/midwife, comes The Post-Pregnancy Handbook, a wonderfully comprehensive, honest self-help guide which every new (and repeat) mother should keep by her bedside. Brown and Struck give detailed guidance on:

The First Few Days - alleviating discomfort from the after-effects of labor or a ceasarian - making the hospital stay more pleasant- coping with possible medical complications

The First Few Weeks - organizing home life with a new baby - surviving fatigue- breastfeeding successfully - managing older siblings, parents and friends- introducing a new dimension to the couple (returning to sex after childbirth)- navigating the new mother's dietary needs- identifying and overcoming a range of emotional difficulties from "baby blues" to severe postnatal depression- dealing with stress, guilt and that elusive maternal instinct

The First Year- achieving a complete physical recovery: how to get back into shape from the inside out - restoring strength and tone to the pelvic floor- countering the legacies of pregnancy: problems with hair, skin, and varicose veins

A thorough, straightforward guide to helping the new mother achieve an effective and harmonious recovery.

The Post-Pregnancy Handbook: The Only Book That Tells What the First Year After Childbirth Is Really All About---Physically, Emotionally, Sexually, by Sylvia Brown, Mary Dowd Struck

From Library Journal Broader in scope than similar consumer works, this book includes discussion of the physical, emotional, and social issues commonly associated with the first year of life after delivery. Englishwoman Brown, who writes with the help of Struck, a registered nurse and clinical teaching associate in obstetrics and gynecology at Brown University Medical School, spearheaded this work after she got frustrated with the dearth of materials on her subject. Unfortunately, in attempting to cover every postpartum issue, the authors preclude comprehensive treatment of individual topics. Presented is a mix of helpful and problematic information. Although interesting in themselves, health statistics are presented without source citations or adequate descriptions of conditions and populations; statements of opinion, some highly arguable, are presented as facts. The authors also fail to provide comprehensive treatment by addressing the reader throughout most of the text as a partnered parent with a healthy infant. Those issues aside, the work's major drawback is its liberal recommendations regarding herbal and mineral remedies, which are provided without warnings of contraindications or potential side effects. For instance, comfrey is recommended for lactation support, but according to the second edition of PDR for Herbal Medicines, it is contraindicated for breast-feeding and pregnancy. Oral ingestion of silver, which has not been shown to be efficacious and has potentially harmful side effects, is recommended to lift postpartum spirits. Not recommended. Noemie Maxwell, King Cty. Lib. Syst., SeattleCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Brown started writing The Post-Pregnancy Handbook after becoming disillusioned with life after her baby was born. No one told her how ravaged her body, or how topsy-turvy her emotions, would be. With nurse and clinical teacher Struck's aid, she aims to put all the unpleasantness out there, so that new mothers can be better informed. Her advice is practical and descriptive, dealing with such mundane but necessary matters as stretch marks, hair care, diet, and bodily functions during the first few weeks after giving birth; she and Struck suggest traditional and alternative remedies for those and other concerns. They briefly address the psychological ramifications of parenthood, too, with helpful tips on understanding what a new father might be feeling and on regaining intimacy with one's partner. Particularly insightful is the chapter "The Mother in You," which helps a woman manage her expectations of herself as a mother, given the practicalities of everyday life. About the Author Sylvia Brown wrote The Post-Pregnancy Handbook in response to her own frustration at the lack of comprehensive information on the mother in the weeks and months after childbirth. This is her first book. Trained as a nurse midwife at Columbia University, Mary Dowd Struck,RN, MS, CNM has been Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island since 1986 and has been a Teaching Associate in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brown University School of Medicine since 1994. Before her current appointment, she was both a nurse and administrator at hospitals across Rhode Island and New York.

I am giving it as a shower gift to my expectant cousin. It is especially helpful if you don't have any close friends or relatives who have had a baby that can tell you first hand what happens to your body, emotions, relationship with spouse and friends after the baby. There is an important chapter that explains what emotions the father goes through and why he isn't always as helpful as you would expect. Buy this book if you are a first time mom or know someone who is expecting.

Give this book to every pregnant woman By A Customer When I was pregnant I read a ton of pregnancy and baby books, but none prepared me for the post-pregnancy realities. All pregnancy books ended at labor and all baby books started with baby. But I had a really difficult time after the birth of my first baby and there was nothing available for ME. This book gives new moms honest information to help them get back to themselves in every way -- emotionally, physically and sexually. Now I give this book to every pregnant friend. It is the best shower gift.

By MyParenTime.com For many women, the time period after giving birth is an unknown -- How will they feel? Is there any pain involved? What can I expect? Even though each pregnancy and after birth experience is different, if a woman has never given birth before, she is much in the dark about what she can actually expect. The book "The Post-Pregnancy Handbook," by Sylvia Brown, explains in detail what new mothers can expect to feel after giving birth. It discusses recovery and any problems you might experience; caring for and getting your body back after you get home; breastfeeding; relationship issues; sex; and exercise.MyParenTime.com recommends this book -- it answers many questions that women might be afraid to ask their doctors, and aims to reassure women that they can recover from pregnancy...physically, emotionally, and sexually. If women know what to expect after childbirth, they will be more equipped to deal with post-pregnancy experiences.

Over filled with action, but not much story, but I guess what am I expecting with a Mortal Kombat comic. I'll get the third though, don't get me wrong. The writing is done well, it is what you'd expect from a Mortal Kombat story. The art is good, reminding me of a Batman, full of dark colors.

There, Spotswood joins the Communist Party to help establish a more just society, but his idealism quickly degrades under the stress of party orthodoxy and hypocrisy.

Adventures of a Young Man: A Novel, by John Dos Passos

About the Author John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896–1970) was a writer, painter, and political activist. He wrote over forty books, including plays, poetry, novels, biographies, histories, and memoirs. He crafted over four hundred drawings, watercolors, and other artworks.   Dos Passos considered himself foremost a writer of contemporary chronicles. He preferred the moniker of “chronicler” because he was happiest working at the edge of fiction and nonfiction.   Both genres benefited from his mastery of observation—his “camera eye”—and his sense of historical context. Dos Passos sought to ground fiction in historic detail and working-class, realistic dialogue. He invented a multimedia format of songs, newsreels, biographies, third-person fictional narrative, and first-person semi-autobiographical narrative snapshots to convey the frenzy of America’s industrialism and urbanism in the twentieth century. His most memorable fiction—Three Soldiers (1921), Manhattan Transfer (1925), and the U.S.A. trilogy (1938)—possesses the authority of history and the allure of myth. Likewise, he sought to vitalize nonfiction history and reportage with the colors, sounds, and smells documented on his journeys across the globe.

The bastards grind you down By John L Murphy The Lion Books pulp 1955 cover aside, this is not exactly a novel of "corrupt and bitter passions" of the libido, but rather of the liberal-- a boy from a middle-class background who wants to be one of the glorified proleteriat, so as to further awareness in himself and the noble masses of the imperative to overthrow "the contradictions of capitalism." I was halfway through this story when the Depression rumbled in, reading about its coming the same day that our contemporary "stimulus bill" was passed to avert what nobody now wants to call another crash. Later, a Communist ideologue warns of fascism: "The state became in actual fact the executive committee of the ruling class," and I admit I wonder despite the party in power now if this has not happened after all, seventy years after the class wars of the 1930s. This made the novel's arc more relevant than I'd expected.Since I liked Dos Passos' famed trilogy "U.S.A." and "Manhattan Transfer" (the latter reviewed by me on Amazon as well as "Three Soldiers" about WWI), and since I read last year both Virginia Spencer Carr and Townsend Ludington's massive biographies (I reviewed them too), I wanted to find out more about this fictional tale. Dos Passos retreats from his newsreel style into a conventional narrative. It moves rapidly, through "The Parental Bent" largely showing Glenn Spotswood's childhood and his try at agitprop while a counselor at a summer camp, to "Schooling and Youthful Errors," to "The Moment of Truth."Trouble is there's nearly no mention of his schooling to get a sense of his formal education; Dos Passos wants instead to show Glenn learning life's lessons as a laborer in the Midwest and hanging out with Wobblies, then mixing with the Marxists of Greenwich Village, and finally organizing Mexican pecan shellers in East Texas. Dos Passos often captures the vernacular well, and continues his knack for the natural detail: "Outside the dim barn the sunlight fell dazzling like a blow on the back of the neck." (77)Still, there's a detachment permeating Glenn's bildungsroman. He's an idealist, but when he takes up with the I.W.W. or the Reds it's with barely a ripple of explanation why. Dos Passos may hint that our allegiances come along with our chance conversations and our unpredictable acquaintances. You get more quick sketches of people than nuanced portraits. A few women come and go, Wheatly the Appalachian firebrand and Marice the limousine liberal managing to stand out somewhat; the ladies here tend to be as predatory as the men. Episodic if epic, the chapters tend to rush into events and then settle into long debates before Glenn has to dash away again. Perhaps this reflects Glenn's own lack of insight, but there's a gap between the consciousness- raising and lack of character development that leaves this story of his adventures floating rather than racing. This vacuum may be intentionally constructed. Dos Passos does write this straight after his disillusionment with Marxist dogmatism and its manipulation by Moscow as he had witnessed in Spain. The struggle between the Stalinists and the socialists and anarchists draws Glenn in as it had Dos Passos, and this ends the book powerfully, recalling moments such as Sartre's later anti-fascist story "The Wall." The third section and the novel's second half, when Glenn organizes coal miners in Appalachia, and then fights against Communist doctrinaires here and in Spain, moves more energetically and ends dramatically.Glenn encounters one leader: "Our function is to educate the American workingclass in revolutionary Marxism. We are not interested in the fates of individuals." (241) Glenn finds that the Party manipulates those it allows to be framed and jailed, if they happen to be in a union or to represent a cause that contradicts whatever "democratic centralism" the Soviet-loving servants dictate. Contrast this with Glenn: "parties and politics are built on hate." (267-68)Glenn's pacifist dad (who lost his job at Columbia during WWI for his views) tells him, "there's a certain self-indulgence to extremism, which I am coming more and more to distrust."(130) A bit later, a local leftist lawyer reflects about a Mexican labor organizer: "called himself an anarchist, but he talked like an oldfashioned Jeffersonian democrat; funny how your attitude towards a man's political opinions depended on whether they had a nicesounding name or not." (150-1)It's not a novel of ideas, but neither does it immerse you into enough "passion." Glenn comes of age but you do not identify totally with his inner turmoil; you watch it pass. This may in retrospect fit the disillusioned tone of the entire book; Glenn cares too much for people in all his awkward moral righteousness. You never get a firm grip on where he stands; he speaks to the masses but the speeches are never conveyed by the narrator. Before he volunteers to serve in Spain, he confides: "If you say the same words too often, you get so you don't believe them." (291)This excerpt below shows the novel's style at its best. "Adventures" mixes a few tangy observations of Dos Passos' earlier mode with a calmer perspective that would characterize his later prose. You witness the characters as they come and go, but you sense the author's manipulation of them, as if he moves the camera eye past them. The system grinds folks down: this is doomed populism. This feature dominates Dos Passos' manner, and whether you find it illustrative or enervating depends on your predilection."He felt full of life. Noting with amused distant interest, as if out of somebody else's eyes, the streets, the dark storewindows, the faces of men slumped outside of flophouses, the drunk flopped like a dropped bananapeel on the sidewalk, the lively glare of uptown streets where young men and women were coming out of movies, buying papers at streetcorners, crowding into jazznoisy supperplaces past doormen in fancy uniforms opening the taxicab doors, looking carefully into drugstores and the big plateglass windows where the latest models of cars were on show, lit by trick lighting that glinted richly on chromium fittings, he walked on uptown with a richly swinging stride." (127; 1938 Harcourt first ed.)This novel would be followed by "Number One" (1943) and "The Grand Design" (1949) to comprise what in 1952 was published as the "District of Columbia" trilogy, with Glenn's brother Tyler and the Spotswood family as major characters.

Buzalka Like the earlier In Dubious Battle by John Steinbeck, John Dos Passos' Adventures of a Young Man gives early 21st century readers a glimpse of what the radical leftist movement was like in the 1920s and 30s in America by focusing on a few true believers. Both Steinbeck and Dos Passos were committed to the cause, at least at the time they wrote their books, and both ring of honesty, transcribing the difficulties, conflicts and hypocrisies that came with the territory. (George Orwell, writing on the other side of the Atlantic at the same time, could be described this way also.)In Adventures of a Young Man, Dos Passos tells the life story of Glenn Spotswood, a committed solider to the cause, from his upbringing by a widower father to his death in the Spanish Civil War. Along the way he meets a variety of characters who represent different ways of looking at the social situation in America between the World Wars (the novel was published a few months before the outbreak of WWII in Europe). It is a gallery of idealists, cynics, hangers-on, useful idiots, opportunists and cold-blooded ideologues that rings true to real life.Dos Passos is bitterest about the party-line Communists who are willing to hang the workers they supposedly are fighting for out to dry when occasion demands, and the all-too-brief last few chapters almost anticipate Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon, which would come out the following year (two years later in English). The chapters dealing with a miners strike and its aftermath in the last half of the book are compelling as they trigger Glenn's break from the movement but the Spanish Civil War episode at the end seems almost tacked on, a brief coda to wrap the story up neatly (and brutally). I wish Dos Passos had devoted more space to that development as it would have been interesting to compare it with Orwell's Homage to Catalonia (which delivers a very similar criticism of the Communists, but at much greater length and without the filter of fiction) and Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. The chapter was supposedly inspired by Dos Passos' experiences in Spain where, like Orwell, he was shocked and disgusted by the co-opting and subsequent brutal purge of the Republican side by the Communists working under orders from Moscow.Adventures of a Young Man is rarely read these days, overshadowed by same-period/similar subject works like Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (published a few months before Adventures), Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls (which came out the following year), Orwell's Homage to Catalonia and Dos Passos' own U.S.A. trilogy, generally acknowledged as his masterpiece. Granted, Dos Passos is not nearly the writer any of those others are. His prose is honest and straightforward but rarely sings, and his characters never are particularly memorable. If Adventures of a Young Man is distinctive in any way in the Dos Passos oeuvre, it is in its focus on a single central character. His earlier more celebrated works (U.S.A., Manhattan Transfer, Three Soldiers) all featured multiple story lines as Dos Passos strained for the universal and comprehensive. I think the approach of Adventures works better, frankly. We learn to sympathize with Glenn in a way we don't with all the characters flitting in and out of the extended narratives of the other novels.

Disillusionment of a radical in 1930s America & Spain By John L Murphy This tells of the death of a dreams for a worker's revolution held by a boy from a middle-class background who wants to be one of the glorified proletariat, so as to further awareness in himself and the noble masses of the imperative to overthrow "the contradictions of capitalism."
