Everyone's favorite mother-daughter writing duo is back with a new collection of warm and witty stories that will strike a chord with every woman. With twenty-something Francesca navigating New York City, Lisa holding down the fort in the suburbs, and Mother Mary making frequent and always entertaining appearances, there are plenty of opportunities for family-induced guilt, fighting, laughter, and love. As Lisa says, "Bottom line, if you're a mom, you'll feel guilty all the time, and this is true because you're a daughter as well, and God only knows how many times you failed your poor mother." So come along for the ride as Lisa and Francesca continue on the road of life acquiring men and puppies…Ok, to be honest, Lisa is acquiring the puppies, while Francesca is lucky enough to have dates with actual men. They'll leave it to readers to decide which is more desirable and/or or easier to train.

Life, love, and laughs with Lisa (and Francesca) By Angie Boyter Most of the 2-to-3-page essays in Have a Nice Guilt Trip are written by Lisa Scottoline with occasional contributions from daughter Francesca, who clearly has inherited the maternal gift for words as well as Lisa’s self-deprecating sense of humor. The topic is Life, which means anything that crosses the author’s mind, like fried food (When she learns that the Iowa State Fair offered fried butter in a cinnamon-sugar batter Lisa suggests that you try frying Crestor, too, because “you’re gonna have to.”), her feisty Italian mother’s hospitalization (“Mother Mary is out of the hospital, and recovery lies ahead. For the hospital.”), and relationships, including Lisa’s two failed marriages (She refers to her former husbands as Thing One and Thing Two.) and Francesca’s big milestone (“when the first of my ex-boyfriends got married”). Dogs play prominent roles in Lisa’s and Francesca’s lives, and we hear about brushing their teeth, welcoming their new puppies, and mourning their deaths. As you can tell from the quotes above, humor abounds in the essays, as well as warmth, candor, and a strong feeling for their family, both two-legged and four-legged. As Lisa says, “my guess is that our family will remind you of your family, except we’re less well-behaved.” Very true, even if you aren’t Italian.Like a fine wine, Have a Nice Guilt Trip is best enjoyed in small sips rather than gulped at one sitting; I found the style did not wear well in large doses. I recommend this as a book to keep by your bedside and dip into three or four essays at a time. After a few observations on life from Lisa and Francesca, you’re sure to go to sleep with a smile.

Mother and daughter wrote different very short chapters on life topics including dogs, being divorced, jury duty, clothes, hoarding and so many more gal topics. You can read a chapter in less than five minutes so it is ideal to read in short bursts. But if you are like me, you will read one chapter and then another and another. Do you do online shopping where you can create a wish list? Mine on Amazon grew to 70 items (too many), and Francesca’s was truly out of control including a pair of Chloe shoes for $495 and a perfect dress for $14,400 and no she did not buy these items. Lisa suggests she did not prepare for Hurricane Sandy because Sandy is a name she likes, but she thinks Hurricane Satan would have gotten her attention. Funny gals, and this is the 4th in a series.

They are mostly humorous looks at some of life's everyday occurrences, but from two different perspectives. Lisa has a more mature view, and one steeped in not only her success as a writer, but the sometimes lonely lifestyle of being a writer. Francesca is experiencing some of life's important experiences for the first time, so you get the perspective of these events in 2012/13.This is a light and easy book to read, I enjoyed it more by reading a few chapters every few days. It will make a great summer / beach relaxing read!
