By Katherine Chan For those who avoided the first three volumes of Shokugeki no Soma due to over the top "foodgasms", this volume is full of foodgasms, but mostly of the comedic nature. There's no nudity, but there are a few instances where guys will lose their shirts, dress up in ridiculous outfits, and good number of pretty hilarious looking screamin' O faces. I may never be able to look at older Japanese guys with a straight face ever again.Volume 8 continues the Fall Preliminaries, and unlike the cover, has very little to do with Isshiki Senpai and Fumio San, even though they are on the cover. The first portion of the book shows a little backstory for Hayama Akira, and features the battle between him and Soma Kun in the Fall Preliminaries. Once their battle is complete, the Fall Prelims come to an end and we move into a small side story featuring Isshiki Senpai, Megumi, and Soma before moving into the main tournament - the battle between Nakiri Alice and Soma! This volume ends off on a exciting Bento cliffhanger - I just finished this volume and already can't wait for volume 9!!! As always, the food battles are epic, the food reactions are over the top, and dishes served will make you want to drive over to your nearest 3 star Michelin Restaurant for a meal. Also included in this volume is a small side story (in the timeline around chapter 46 in the main story) featuring Nakiri Erina and Nakiri Alice's trip to a public pool, and a pretty hilarious trip to a "mini pool" for the Polar Star girls. The art done by Shun Saeki is absolutely stunning. The illustrations are highly detailed, well laid out, and the food images totally rival anything you could see on Food Network. You will want to stop and eat something while reading this manga. The story by Yuto Tsukuda is equally gripping. Overall, if you enjoy food and food competition reality shows, you'll probably enjoy this series. The story line is fun, the art is great, and if you can't get enough, there is even an anime that is following the manga closely (you can watch for free on Crunchyroll.com). For those who have watched the anime, it ends at chapter 60 of this volume. There is supposedly going to be a second season of Shokugeki No Soma - hopefully it will start off with the Main Tournament of the Fall Elections! The chapters included are:58. Holy Aroma59. A Weapon for Each60. The Warriors' Banquet61. Putting Your Heart Into It62. A Meeting Of Strong People63. PLAN64. On the Edge65. The Theory Of Bento EvolutionSide Story- Erina's Summer Vacation

Parents and readers beware, this has some pretty ecchi graphics in it so you probably shouldn't buy this for your young teens or prepubescents no matter how much they love food.As the title states, this series is mostly about food and battles between students in the academy over who makes the best food. The ecchi parts usually come from when they taste the food, surprising as it may seem. Some are comical, some gets you hot under the collar, but all of them makes your stomach growl in jealousy and hunger.

By Robert Redfeather The only complaint I have is the publisher's addiction to cliff-hanging when it pulls these collections together from serial. For the solid writing and drawing, great recipes and characters, I look forward to buying each issue--but since entering the current arc of competition, we seldom see both halves of serving complete dishes. By the time the next issue is released, I have to re-read at least an issue or two . . . or, usually, more, just to refresh myself on who is who and what is what. Add another chapter so that each issue can stand alone, a complete course!
