2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Valuable for Therapists and Non-Therapists Alike!!! By C. Blonstein, PhD I provide a clinician’s perspective on the authors’ excellent work. Anger Management reflects broad coverage of germane topics, which in turn, are presented in a highly readable, organized and concise fashion. The book could be used: (1) for “self-help” and/or (2) as a supplement to therapy. Areas parallel those which would be focused on during treatment; included are anger-related social triggers, interpretations, consequences, as well as adopting more constructive alternatives. Numerous strategies may be selected and tailored to fit the needs of a particular individual. As a result, current response patterns can be modified so as to yield more adaptive outcomes. The book’s interventions encompass: considering motivation to adopt a new style of interaction; identifying current undesirable reactions; shifting to behaviors that counteract maladaptive ones; linking anger cues to thoughts, feelings and actions; transforming inaccurate appraisals of events into more reasonable ones; evaluating interactions so they are less likely to threaten one’s self-worth; infusing assertive features into communication; utilizing problem-solving procedures to promote desired outcomes; applying relaxation and imagery to compete with angry emotion; practicing disengagement from anger-perpetuating rumination; augmenting social support and connections; reversing inadvertent promotion of others’ anger; utilizing writing to emotionally process past trauma; converting blame into forgiveness; maintaining progress and preventing relapse; obtaining adequate sleep; pursuing meaning and purpose in life; defusing escalation of angry exchanges; etc. Elliott and Smith’s Anger Management is “spot on”; both therapists and non-therapists alike will appreciate its utility.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. as though the book was specifically-crafted for our families' situation By SB This book is a fantastic step-by-step guide to managing anger and dealing with those who struggle with anger. I got this book to help understand what a family member was going through and it was as though the book was specifically-crafted for our family members' situation. The section dealing with non-anger responses was valuable not only for the family member in question, but for all of us. As an individual with a relative dealing with anger management issues, I also found the section on preventing relapses especially valuable so that I could help my relative to guide and diffuse situations before they could even cause anger. A straight-forward, solution-oriented read.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent go-to resource for anger issues By agent99 This book contains an almost overwhelming amount of information. At first, that was off-putting to me, because it seemed too difficult to read through the whole book, which is almost like a textbook on anger. However, you don't have to do that. I found that I could flip through the book, or look up particular topics, and gain insights and ideas without having to slog through the whole thing. You can do that, of course, and some may want or need to read the book cover to cover, but it's also useful for looking up topics. For every anger-related issue, the authors give a variety of suggestions, emphasizing that the reader should try different approaches to find what works. And that's good, because no one method will work for everyone.I appreciate the fact that the authors don't try to make the reader feel guilty for being angry, or blame them for their feelings. I have read at least 3 other books that did the opposite, which was less than helpful. Hence the title, "Anger Management..." The point is, learning to manage anger, to express oneself without creating further conflict, to heal relationships, and to find inner peace. Not everything in the book will strike a chord with everyone, but this is an excellent go-to resource for gaining perspective and learning helpful strategies for dealing with anger.
