About the Author Wallace Wood was born on June 17, 1927 in Menahga, Minnesota. Primarily a self-taught artist, Wood briefly attended both the Minneapolis School of Art and Burne Hogath's Cartoonists and Illustrators School in New York City (later to become the School of Visual Arts). He entered the comic book field in 1949, freelancing for various publishers including Avon and Ziff-Davis, among others. He is perhaps best known for his work with E.C. in general and their science fiction line in particular. His solid composition and lush inking were perfectly presented in titles like WEIRD SCIENCE and WEIRD FANTASY, which required a constant parade of spaceships, monsters, and luscious women in skintight space suits. Wood also worked on E.C.'s horror and war titles, such as THE VAULT OF HORROR and TWO-FISTED TALES, and at the same time was a regular contributor to MAD. Like Will Elder, Wood was a master of MAD's "cluttered" sight gags and joke techniques. He continued to contribute to MAD for 12 years, even after its transformation to a black-and-white magazine. In the 1960s and '70s Wood also worked for Marvel and DC, providing pencils and inks for various characters, and broke new ground with his alternative proto-zine Witzend. Suffering from various health problems in his later years, he took his own life on November 3, 1981 in Los Angeles.

Hall of Fame Artist In a Hall of Fame Package By James Elfers Before Senate hearings, "The Seduction Of The Innocent" and the arrival of the Comic Book Code that killed every other EC Comics publication, "Mad" was a comic book that satirized OTHER comic books. For the first 23 issues of m"Mad," "The usual Gang of idiots" worked in full color. Wallace Wood, a member of the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and Will Eisne'r Comic Book Hall of Fame, was one of the founding "idiots" of "Mad". Supremely talented Wood worked in many areas from comics to book illustrations, to the cult favorite "Mars Attacks" trading cards. Wood's love of Alex Raymond, the creator of "Flash Gordon" is obvious in the pulchritudinous women her excelled at drawing. Everything he did for the first twenty three issues of "Mad" are reproduced here in lush and beautiful color. Among the gems in this collection are the legendary "Superduper Man" which tackles everything from DC's Lawsuits against Captain Marvel, to the absurdity of Clark Kent's secret identity, to both of their relationships with Lois Lane. Equally brilliant are the "Bat Boy and Rubin" parody, "Flesh Garden", Wood's valentine to his idol, and the amazing "Sound Effects!" which tells its entire story with out a single word ballon! This really is in many ways a collection of superlative material. The ONLY reason I knocked off one star is because some of the targets of parody are so dated that they may not resonated with today's audience. I am middle aged, for example, yet I have only a vague memory of "Terry and The Pirates" and the "Black Hawks " comic strips, two of the targets in this collection. Even so, I could appreciate Wood's sexy take on the Milton Caniff's Dragon Lady (who is believed to have inspired Bettie Page's bangs). The book even ends with a literal exclamation point in the form of the Ripley parody, "Ripups Believe It Or Don't!" If you are a fan of Mad Magazine and grew up reading it, you may have encountered this material before. I remember reading some of these stories in various reprint paperbacks in the 1970's HOWEVER, here they are reprinted in the glorious full color as they were meant to be. For me it was very much like seeing these stories for the very fist time. This wonderful reprint also bears a price that can not be beaten. You won't be disappointed

If you've never seen this stuff before this is a great place to start, and if you're already familiar it's a great place to revisit these stories (I own the Russ Cochran large HC reprints, and for a while I owned some of the original art from these early stories). These are simply great books at a great price (there are also books on Will Elder and Jack Davis- I recommend them all). The stories are printed comic book size and in full color, looking like mint copies of the original comics. The pages are not printed from pics of old comics, but fresh crisp blacks and clean, just right colors. Great printing! 158 Pages of WOW Wally Wood art and fantastic Kurtzman stories.HIGHLY Recommended for new or old readers of MAD.I'm putting my three copies on the shelf behind my drawing board for easy and fast reference.
