Black Widow Forever Red (A Marvel YA Novel), by Margaret Stohl

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Beautiful Creatures (Little, Brown, 2010) coauthor Stohl and Marvel team up for a brand new Black Widow story with two original main characters. Once a lethal assassin for Russia, Natasha Romanov (aka Black Widow) strives to atone for her past mistakes. Working with S.H.I.E.L.D, Natasha is ready to kill her former teacher, Ivan Somodorov, but does not count on rescuing a little girl from a planned explosion at his lab. Without realizing it, Natasha and Ava are caught in Ivan's latest experiment, which gives Ava access to Natasha's abilities. Years later, their lives converge when Ava meets Alex, a boy she has been having dreams about, and is reunited with Natasha, who turns their normal lives upside down. Natasha reluctantly involves Ava and Alex in her mission to kill Ivan and save the world, but the cost may be too high. Black Widow: Forever Red can be enjoyed without prior knowledge, and for those who are familiar with Black Widow, Natasha's history is expanded in new ways. VERDICT Great fight sequences, plenty of action, twists in the plot, and characters motivated by strong emotions will keep readers engaged and entertained. A great addition for most young adult collections.—Marissa Lieberman, East Orange Public Library, NJ

It's a perfectly good book, but it's just not what I think a Marvel book should feel like. This book is not about Black Widow, but instead a girl named Ava Orlova who later becomes the Red Widow. This is about her past and how she's connected to BW by the bad guy who made them both who they are. It just fell a little flat for me, who knew BW could end up being a background character in her own book? I think that this story could have been done a lot better, BW has a past that is shrouded in secrecy and we've never really learned a whole lot about it in any one story, not even in the comics, for those of you that want this to shed a light on BW's past, it doesn't.They could have made this a very rich story with action and suspense and everything that makes BW a compelling character. But they didn't.This was supposed to be written for Marvel fans right? Honestly I feel like some of them might be seriously insulted by this.On the bright side Coulson is as funny and lovable as ever what there is of him in here, though I don't really get how this ties in to the MCU, there is no real direct reference to any of the movies. And no Hawkeye, not even a mention, not even when referencing the Avengers, it was like he didn't exist, that I did not like. If you're looking for a marvel fix or in particular a Black Widow fix, this might not do it, you might have to go watch Cap 2 and dip into your comic collection. This is a fine regular YA book, but I cannot recommend this to Marvel fans, you're probably better off hoping for that Black Widow movie that everybody wants but may never happen.

Suspenseful spy thriller true to the Marvel character By Johanna Draper Carlson Marvel seems to finally be realizing that there is an audience for works about their superhero women. There’s still no word on a much-desired Black Widow movie, even though she’s, due to her being part of The Avengers, their best known female character. Instead, she gets a book, one written by best-selling YA author Margaret Stohl.I didn’t think, going in, that I wanted to know more about the super-spy. I’m ok with her being a kind of female Wolverine (especially since he’s gone from the Marvel universe currently), a bad-ass taciturn super-fighter with a mysterious dark past. So I put off reading Black Widow: Forever Red, assuming from the title that it would be more about the murderous history of Natasha Romanov. That’s part of the context, but smartly, Stohl creates her own characters to focus on, while revealing parts of Natasha’s history. This is really the story of Ava. She’s rescued as a child by Natasha from the manipulating Russian who raised Romanov to become the Black Widow. Now Ava’s a teen, and she finds herself having mysterious dreams about an attractive young man. (You can see a comic version of this introduction in the backup story in the comic Mockingbird S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1, written by Stohl and drawn by Nico Leon.)She meets the literal boy of her dreams, Alex, and the two find them swept up into a mission of Natasha’s, going on the run and working to save the world. Ava has a mysterious connection to Natasha which also gives her super-spy skills. I understand that the two of them are paired due to the underlying plot device, but it’s a bit too convenient that there’s also some kind of mystic connection between Ava and Alex that I didn’t think was sufficiently explained. I know that a female-centered fantasy YA novel needs a charming boyfriend, but he never came as alive for me as character as Ava and Natasha did.Comic fans will appreciate the cameos by Agent Coulson and Tony Stark, while just about anyone who enjoys spy thrillers will find everything they need in the book, without a lot of other comic knowledge needed. It’s not my favorite genre, so I didn’t love the book, but fans of the character will enjoy the read. The voices are well-done and the events could fit into the next movie or comic book. Although there’s a new revelation about Natasha’s past, it’s told in such a way that everything is reset by the end, putting the toys back the way they were found, as they should be in a shared universe. This book starts off not too long after Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow joins S.H.I.E.L.D. She has to revisit her past in Russia and meets a little girl named Ava. After Natasha saves Ava from her old boss (Ivan), she pretty much drops out of Ava's life. Ava's life has not been easy after Natasha dropped her off in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody many years earlier. Ava, now a teenager, keeps having very vivid dreams about a boy named Alex that she runs into in Philadelphia. She also runs into Natasha in the same place after Ivan has been spotted again. They soon learn that the two of them are connected from their previous meeting. The dreams that Ava was having about Alex are also connected to Natasha. Ava and Alex decide to go searching for Ivan while Natasha learns that she volunteered for something that she never thought she would. She also learns that she could be a security risk (along with hundreds of other people). The three of these characters have to work together in order to stop something that could cause destruction all over the globe. Of course pandemonium ensues and everyone is different because of it. There are so many secrets uncovered that you will be surprised every chapter! This book was extremely entertaining. I felt like I was reading Scarlett Johansson's character from the Avengers' movies. Tony Stark makes an appearance and he felt very real too. (He was also hilarious, of course!) Their personalities are perfect in the book! This book felt like a seamless transition from the movies onto the page. It can always be scary reading an iconic character that so many people are attached to, but Stohl does a brilliant job of bringing Black Widow to life. This book makes me wish there was a movie based on Natasha (PLEASE Marvel!!!). Fans of the comic books will not be disappointed and will want Stohl to pen another Black (or Red?) Widow story.I received this book for an honest review.
