It's the mid nineteen fifties, and the nascent romance of two young Sydneysiders is about to be challenged. The heroine, Linda, is being courted by an ambitious young carpenter named Harry. Seemingly without effort, he passes the scrutiny of her parents and they encourage her alliance with him. Trouble brews, though, when her sister Tessa lays eyes on him and, despite her engagement to a young accountant, makes her feelings abundantly clear. Will Tessa's overtures ruin the fledgling love between Harry and Linda?

A very awesome book cover By Tony Parsons Linda Brown (21) invited Harry Peters (23, furniture designer) her B/F over for dinner to meet her parent’s house.Harry was introduced to William Brown (dad, ordering, sales tracker), Edith Brown (mom), Jim Brown (17, Linda’s brother) & Tessa Brown (Linda’s sister). What will happen to Tessa & Tom (Tessa’s fiancée, accountant)? What about Linda & Harry?I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Australian romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of very unique/colorful characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Australian romantic movie, or mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Goodreads; Author; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an enjoyable romance By Cloggie Downunder Sisters and Rivals is a fifties-era romance by Australian author, Margaret Lynette Sharp. Twenty-one year old Linda Brown is finally bringing her new boyfriend home to meet her parents. She hasn’t been going out with Harry all that long, but she is becoming convinced the he may be “the one”. But Linda is apprehensive about introducing Harry to her older sister, Tessa. She may be engaged to Tom, but Tessa is a shameless flirt who possesses a magnetism that seems to attract any man in her orbit. And Linda has good reason to be wary: Tom is not the first boyfriend Tessa has lured away from her.Sharp conjures the fifties with consummate ease. Those times when television was a luxury that few could afford, when premarital sex was not commonplace, when the closest anyone came to an electronic device was answering the clunky black Bakelite rotary-dial telephone that lived in the hall, or listening to the radio, when an evening’s entertainment meant going to a concert or listening to records on the gramophone, all are marvellously evoked and will strike a chord with readers from that era.Sharp’s dialogue, and the topics of conversation, too, are characteristic of the era. Attitudes and opinions all reflect the times. The tension and rivalry between Linda and Tessa is well conveyed, as are Linda’s feelings of insecurity about Harry’s fidelity. Linda’s lack of confidence means that trust becomes the major issue in this new relationship, an issue that is not completely resolved until the very last page. This is an enjoyable romance with universal appeal. 3.5 starsWith thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

Roddom 4949011Sally906's review Jun 20, 15 · edit4 of 5 starsbookshelves: australian-author, historical, author-supplied, e-book, romance, novellaRead from June 19 to 20, 2015Linda has a new boyfriend, Harry, and the story opens as he comes over for to meet her parents for the first time. That she is apprehensive about her new relationship is foreshadowed in the opening sentence:...As I glanced through the uncurtained window, a vague sense of unease, of foreboding, engulfed me...Straight away tension is introduced in the form of Linda's older sister Tessa. Tessa is not so sweet and innocent. She is very selfish and a man magnet. She flirts shamelessly with men and has stolen Linda's previous boyfriend, Tom. Tessa and Tom are now engaged but Linda still feels insecure about Tessa meeting Harry. Sure enough when Tessa lays eyes on Linda's new beau it looks like Linda's worse fear has come to fruition. What follows is a wonderful story about how a shy and insecure woman must try and find the confidence to know what she really wants and how to go about getting it.I really enjoy Margaret Sharp's work. She has a wonderful way with words and I was swept into the story, engaging with Linda and her feelings and insecurities from the opening lines to the last page. The romance is lovely, there is passion between Linda and Harry but it is not in your face, sometimes with romance less is more. The feelings are there, the desire is there but there is no rumpy pumpy because Linda is a good girl and restrains herself. Not always to Harry's liking and his frustration certainly comes over in the pages - as to is hers because she so wants to succumb herself. I like that in a romance. In fact there is a lot of emotion packed in this story, and lessons to learn. Even though the book is just over 120 pages, Margaret was able to satisfyingly show growth in all of the young characters not an easy thing to do within a short story framework.I certainly recommend this book.
