From the writings of Marie Nicolaevna Romanavna, age 19, July 17, 1918 - Midnight, in bed with her sister, Anastasia (Shvybz), in the Ipatiev Mansion in Ekaterinburg, during the last night of their lives.

"So much of my story unfolds by moonlight. This is a tale of midnight wakings and forced marches before dawn. Since this nightmare began, I do not dare undress, even to go to bed. I wear my dressing gown, my hair is prepared, and my shoes are set beside me. I have no idea when we will be summoned to rise. We have moved, as in the worst of dreams, slowly toward this place. There is no logic other than the sleepwalker's obedience - to follow instruction which we cannot resist: an actual lunacy.

"Now, I have control only of this - my record of what happened to us, to me. I have committed a single sin, my one terrible transgression. I pray to be absolved. In this recording of memory lies all meaning to my life. Let my will prevail in this, my ultimate wish, to salvage something of value from this tragedy. The rest, as my mother says, is in God's hands."

Here, in startling new historical detail, based on original diaries and letters, is the Romanov tragedy told from the point of view of the Tsar's third daughter, Marie, Anastasia's closest, older sister. Marie's story is unique - only Marie crossed the frozen Siberian river with her parents, and only Marie shared the full 78 days and nights in "The House of Special Purpose".

Of course I knew the end, but it started at the perfect place and I loved the opening and closing chapters from the young guard's point of view. Throughout, there are such beautiful details of how they lived in each stage, including before the fall - and then the journeys, the houses, the whole downward spiral, with heartbreaking bright spots - how they learn to ask for less and less and yet keep hoping that somehow this will end well. Marie is a great narrator and you see more and more complexity in her, and in other characters as she writes about them, especially her father. The details of the end are horrifying and completely human as told from the boy's perspective. It really is a page-turner in the best sense - no gimmicks, just a great, suspenseful story, a fascinating world, and a tremendously compelling narrator.

By a reader & listener This literary page-turner channels the voice of Anastasia's older sister Marie in a stunning retelling of the last days of imperial Russia. While the Revolution rages outside, Marie and her parents flee the Winter Palace. After a heart-stopping journey, she's reunited with her beloved sisters in the House of Special Purpose, and the family begins a kind of eerie half-life within its walls, not knowing what lies ahead, but trying to make the most of their stolen time. Highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction, doomed romance, and beautiful prose.

Factually correct with all the humanity and emotion woven through it--emotions you experienced with Marie and the family. I had to put it down several times, take a break and a breath, only to pick it back up again. I took the day off today with plans to get out for a much needed road trip, meaning to put it aside and head out. By two in the afternoon I had finished the book and had already rationalized that I'd go tomorrow--when it was sunnier...because I knew I couldn't go until I finished it.The author mentions that on July 18, 2018 is the 100th year anniversary of their deaths. Oh, how I'd love to go.My recommendation? Absolutely, it weaves all the facts together in the style of a personal journal and brings them to beautiful and painful life.
