The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen reimagines the life of England's most famous female author by asking: How would her life have changed if she had married and had a child? How would this thinking woman, and sensitive soul, have responded not to a ballroom flirtation but to a real relationship that developed over time? How would shouldering the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood have changed her as a person and a writer?
The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen is the only Austen—themed novel that delves deeply into the psyche of a woman falling in love—and the only novel to address what marriage in the early 1800s would have been like for a woman of intelligence and passion.
Using the Austen oeuvre as a foundation, this book takes the heroine out of her safe country villages and tosses her into a world that is far more complex and exciting. As the story develops, the protagonist becomes engaged in matters such as the slave trade; the advances that gave birth to the Industrial Revolution; the growing conflicts between science and religion; the antagonism between aristocrats and the rising mercantile class; and the horrifying impacts of the never—ending war with France on English citizens.
And all the while, she falls ever more in love with the man who introduces her to this bigger and more dangerous world.
Being a courtship novel, Volume I concludes with a happy ending; but it goes beyond a comedy of manners to touch deep, honest feelings between a woman and man. Volume I of The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen sets up the complexity and contradictions of marriage that are addressed in the following volumes: the richness of a requited love set against the often cruel realities of life in the Regency age—for husband as well as wife.

I don’t know where to begin to express how profoundly moved I am by what Collins Hemingway has accomplished with The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen. But I’ve got to preface my praise by confessing that English lit was my minor in college, and Austen’s work was definitely not my cup of herbal tea – not then, and probably never. That said, I really admire this book and will recommend it to anyone who enjoys the works of Jane Austen.Prolific author Hemingway has ventured boldly into the world of fiction, and the result is a truly inspired reimagining of the life of English novelist Jane Austen. It’s an audacious premise: What if the revered literary figure had married? And what if she had married into money? The world’s legions of Austen devotees will love this story. Even one who is anything but a Janeite will admire Hemingway’s wickedly clever approach to the tale. He tells it in the delightfully mannered Regency era style of Austen herself, paying homage to her groundbreaking attention to irony, wit, plot and the themes of love, loyalty and relationships.Like Jane’s imagined wedding night, this story is a bit slow at getting to the fireworks, but once it does it soars aloft like a hot air balloon – and quite literally. Along the way we meet a colorful collection of fully realized characters, most notably the dashing yet callow young Ashton Dennis, whom war and the world transform into a fitting suitor for the brilliant Englishwoman. Will their union produce happiness, children and prosperity for Jane? Will she still be doomed to ill health and an early demise? Hemingway holds the answers in his mischievous mind, aiming to answer them in a pair of sequelsl. Jane Austen fans, rejoice!Doug BatesOakridge, Oregon

It swiftly transports the reader to early 19th century England when the country dominated the world in commerce, science and on the high seas, and to the constricted social world of Jane Austen. One can feel the rough cobblestones of Bath beneath thin slippers and the cold damp of fire lit rooms, belying the warmth of familial interactions. The book imaginatively portrays an alternative history for the famous author. We are introduced to the young, handsome albeit clumsy suitor and to Jane's pronounced negative feelings about the institution of marriage. The title gives away the denouement, not lessening the pleasure of the journey our heroine takes a whit. I look forward to the second novel with great anticipation!

I found myself reading the last of this book rather than preparing for a party I was to give that evening. I certainly recommend this book and am awaiting the next in the series.
