By Mrs. Baker Journey of Sorrow, Journey of Hope is an insight-filled, historical novel, set in Persia, Russia, Rome and Paris of the mid- to late 1800's and the turn of the century. Told as the memoirs of Shirin, an fictional elderly Persian woman, Ms. Handy, who is elderly herself, interweaves them with the journals of Edward J.H.Hillhouse, fictional British diplomat and the "confessions" of Padre Vittorio, into a taut, compelling interpretation of a period of history that not only gave rise to today's Baha'i faith, but to a goodly fraction of the angst-ridden demi-world of today's middle east which one only needs to turn on the nightly news to see and hear. One cannot expect much more from an historical novel now, can one? In the interest of full disclosure, Ms Handy and I shared an English teacher, oh, so long ago, so while I am personally thrilled at this fine work, I am not surprised.

Only with Blood: A Novel of Ireland, by Therese Down

Review "Down spins a web of psychologically complex characters who hurt others and are hurt themselves; the back story of the emotionally stunted Jack, abandoned by his mother as a child and carrying the burden of his own IRA involvement in his youth, is especially haunting." (Publishers Weekly 2015-05-15)

About the Author Therese Down is currently working as the Head of English at a High School in England and has been teaching English Literature and Language for over twenty years in a range of schools and colleges. She holds a MA in Employment Law and is experienced in personnel management.

By Lori Drake Only With Blood is riveting and heart breaking. At times the harshness takes your breath away but then tender moments steal in and warm your soul. This incredible story is filled with extraordinary people living life the best that they know how in a country where struggle is an everyday occurrence and dreams are a luxury afforded to very few.Jack Flynn is 43 years old and to say that his life has been harsh is an understatement. His mother left him at a tender age (never to return) with his abusive father and this harsh reality left Jack with built up anger and a sour countenance. Suffering terribly with tuberculosis, unanswered questions and guilt from the past, Jack wishes to marry before it's too late. He sets his sites on the beautiful, fiery, 17 year old, Caitlin Spillane. Caitlin's one wish is to go to university but her father has other plans and selfish motives of his own...Thus begins Only with Blood. Read one page and you won't be able to out this book down! I believe I forgot to mention one other character, the dashing, handsome (and young!) Donal Kelly! He also has his eye on the lovely Caitlin. Donal is educated, clever and capable- but sadly, also has ties to the IRA.I never knew what was going to happen in this book- and I relished every second of guessing. Texting my 17 year old updates as I read (she was out with a friend) because she also wanted to know what was happening in the story! Survival, secrets, compassion, justice, forgiveness, and history are all here. This isn't a fluffy book. The story is raw and beautiful. The words will stay with you long after you read the last page. Thank you for this masterpiece, Therese Down!*I noticed one reviewer mention excessive bad language in this book. Yet, I don't remember even one bad word? If there is any, it didn't offend me and I'm quite particular about profanity. Just my 2 cents. :) *

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mixed feelings about this novel By Becky R. Honestly, it's hard to really know what to say about Only with Blood. For the first 3/4 of the novel, I struggled to get through it. I think part of this is because I know virtually no Irish history, so the names and events, which I'm sure would have been significant to readers in Ireland or the United Kingdom, meant nothing to me. So much of the story surrounding Donal, the man who falls for Caitlin, centers on the IRA, and this plot line in particular didn't keep my attention. While no one in Only with Blood is particularly likeable, I was drawn to Jack Flynn. Though he certainly had issues, he had a good heart, something I could sense from the beginning, even when his actions seemed to make him a villain. I especially appreciated the gestures he made toward Caitlin, despite her loathing toward him. There is a moment near the end of the novel when he explains to Caitlin why he married her, and that explanation gave me goosebumps and confirmed everything I thought I understood about Jack. The novel does end rather abruptly—as in, it doesn't really end—but I found that I didn't really mind. Jack and Caitlin's story wrapped up well, and that's the story I cared about. If Only with Blood had simply been about Jack and Caitlin and the drama surrounding their marriage, I think I would have really enjoyed it. However, the politics—something I'm sure many readers will enjoy—kept me from fully connecting with and enjoying this novel. 2-1/2 stars.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free for review from Kregel Publications. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this novel is an excellent read on several levels By E. Withers Set in the 1940s in Ireland, this novel is an excellent read on several levels. First, the characters are interesting; I found myself caring about them deeply. Caitlin finds herself in an impossible situation. I could feel her despair and sympathize with her as she goes through denial, anger, and a reluctant acceptance. I also came to understand Donal's desires that drove him to do what he did, even if I didn't always agree. The end is not what I expected at all but is very appropriate. Secondly, I learned some things about Irish history, both through the book and through the research that the book prompted me to do. I felt that the descriptions were real and true to the time period. This added to the authenticity of the novel. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction and Ireland.***I received a free copy of this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program in exchange for an honest review.***

Brant Stephanie does an amazing job in this book breaking down all of the key parts of what it takes to identify toxic relationships and develop positive ones. She masterfully covers exactly how you can avoid bad relationships. There are no perfect people out there, but this book will help you see whether the people in your life can be helped or if you really should move on and find healthier people.

This book started off well but I couldn't get through it due to the vast number of grammatical errors that made some of the advice incomprehensible. I felt like I couldn't trust the author to give valuable advice if they could barely string a sentence together.

It helped me deal with ghosts of my past, and realize that sex and love does not equate. This book is for a mature reader and will be a blessing to all that desire to be delivered from feelings of self-worthlessness.

By AC From the first pages my heart was breaking for the little girl who went without the love she needed to be a confident young woman. But God uses our weakness and our personal tragedies to weave the tapestry of His making, in His will. Why He allows some things to happen, I will never understand. But regardless of whether we follow Him or struggle and take detours in this life, one thing is definitively constant, and that is His Grace. There is no mess that he can't turn around. No circumstance or situation that he can't use to grow us, to reflect His true character. The author paints a beautiful portrait of the one perfect love that is free and costs us nothing in return. If only we would look up instead of filling our lives with meaningless exchanges and destructive behavior. Ms. Davis exposes her flaws to the reader and in the process heavily vests the emotions of her audience, making her all the more endearing and her violators the equivalent of bottom-dwelling pariah. I found myself wanting to strangle half the men in this book. And Russell had better be in prison for life! The book is essential to any parent with young children and a naive world view. There are wolves out there. Often much closer than you think.

I

For lack of a better starting point, I shall begin this particular tale on a foggy morning in April of 1869. The mist rose off the water in thick, brownish puffs that reminded me of cannon smoke. It moved in the same skittish manner—an ever-shifting curtain of haze that offered fleeting glimpses of Petty’s Island as the fog approached the dock. I felt a familiar, unwelcome shudder of dread when the fog crashed over us. Tucked in its rolling tendrils was a heady stew of familiar odors. Damp earth. Dirty water. Decay. With the fog in my eyes and its smell in my nostrils, I couldn’t help but think of Antietam. So much was the same. The early morning chill. The silhouettes of men shimmering within the mist. The stench, getting stronger. As another wall of haze moved in, I cast my eyes to the ground, expecting to see it strewn with the shredded corpses of my fallen brothers. But I was not at Antietam. I was right here in Philadelphia. On the waterfront of the Delaware River, to be precise, the city sprawling westward behind me. The smell that rode with the fog was merely the remains of yesterday’s catch, sitting a few yards away in a rotting pile of fish guts and lopped heads. The ground, instead of bearing dozens of broken bodies, contained only one. A woman. Fully intact, but dead nonetheless. Dressed in a gray shift that clung to her body, she looked more girl than woman. Her blond hair, darkened by the water from which she had been pulled, spread across the dock like dredged-up kelp. Sand, pebbles, and streaks of mud stuck to her pale flesh. With her eyes closed and body still, she looked at peace, although I was certain she hadn’t died that way. It was not, incidentally, the first corpse I had seen that week. I’d seen two the day before—an unlucky pair that had been stabbed in an alleyway on the city’s southern tip. Sailors, caught on the wrong end of a drunkard’s Bowie knife. After witnessing a sight such as that, a dead girl wasn’t so shocking. Not that I was easily shocked to begin with. In my line of work, death came with the territory. As a reporter for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, I was called on to write about a wide assortment of subjects, but the one I covered the most was crime. Murders, mainly. And for a place nicknamed the City of Brotherly Love, there were an alarming number of them. But the girl on the ground, it seemed, wasn’t a murder victim. At least that’s what Inspector William Barclay, standing on the other side of her body, thought. “She drowned,” he told me. “The crew of the Cooper’s Point ferry spotted her floating in the river.” The ferry was docked at Pier 49, ready to make the morning’s first crossing to Camden. Just beyond it, an impatient crowd grew along the end of Shackamaxon Street, waiting to board, with those in the front trying to peer past the line of policemen blocking their way. The rest of the waterfront rattled with activity, even at that early hour. The lumber mills and steelworks to the south were clanging and buzzing beasts. To the north of us, Kentucky boats filled with coal pushed out onto the river. But on the edge of the pier, it was just me, Barclay, and the dead girl. “So there’s nothing suspicious about her death?” I asked. Barclay shook his head. “Not particularly. Of course, that’s ultimately for the coroner to decide.” “I assume he’ll rule it an accidental drowning,” I said. “But what do you think?” Barclay, who had seen even more death than myself, tried to avoid looking at the corpse again. Instead, he stared at the pile of fish scraps nearby. A fair number of birds—gulls, mostly, but also a handful of crows—circled it, swooping down at regular intervals to scoop up pieces of the stinking bounty. Barclay watched two gulls battle for a bit of tail before saying, “If she was found in the water, then logic dictates that she also died there. So, to answer your question, yes. I believe that this poor girl drowned in the river.” He looked to me, hoping his answer was satisfactory. He could tell from my expression that it was not. “You don’t agree?” “Not precisely,” I said, pausing to let Barclay issue the sigh that I knew was coming. When you spend lengthy periods of time with someone, as I had with William Barclay, you quickly learn their particular habits. For Barclay, that included shifting his weight to his left leg and putting his hands on his hips when he was impatient or sighing when he was annoyed. Since his hands had already fixed themselves on his hips as soon as I arrived, I knew what was next. “I know your readers are a bloodthirsty lot,” Barclay said, “but try not to turn what’s simply a tragic accident into sensationalistic fodder for your newspaper.” I intended to do no such thing, although I couldn’t hold the accusation against Barclay. The Bulletin’s readers were rather ghoulish. No crime was too foul, bloody, or unthinkable for them. There was a reason the motto among the city’s crime reporters was “The morbider, the merrier.” “I’m not wishing that this girl had been brutally butchered,” I said. “All I’m asking is that you not be so quick to conclude what killed her.” Because Philadelphia is flanked by two rivers, I had seen a fair number of drowning deaths. The lack of oxygen colors the faces of most victims a pale purple. Their bodies are often bloated. Quite a few of them have pieces of flesh missing from the hungry fish that found them before any human got the chance. The pitiful creature at my feet possessed none of these telltale signs. Granted, she could have thrown herself into the chilly Delaware only minutes before she had been found, yet it looked to me that something else was at work. If it wasn’t for the soaked clothing and the dirt on her skin, someone waiting for the ferry couldn’t have been blamed for thinking she was still alive and merely napping on the bleached wood of the pier. “She looks at peace,” I said. “As if she had passed in her sleep.” Barclay sighed again. “So you’re a trained coroner now, I see.” “I’m simply saying that she doesn’t look like a drowning victim. Surely, you can see that.” “All I see,” Barclay said, “is that it was a bad idea to grant you access to the police department that your competitors in the press do without. I’m sure the gentlemen at the Times or the Public Ledger wouldn’t ask me to second-guess myself.” “They also didn’t save your life on the battlefield,” I replied. “Or have you forgotten about that?” “How could I when you’re always around to remind me? Now, do you have any more questions or can I proceed without further interruption?” I had no doubt that Barclay was speaking in jest. He and I had been friends for close to seven years now, having met as members of the Union Army. While it was true that, during a surprise skirmish in a Virginia forest, I threw him to the ground before a minié ball to the skull could do the honors, I think he rather enjoyed having me around. Whenever a ghastly crime occurred, Barclay sent a policeman to my house to whisk me to the scene. That’s exactly what had happened earlier that morning. Much earlier than I would have preferred or was prepared for. The bell at the front door clanging at five o’clock had not only jerked me from a deep sleep, but sent Lionel, my butler, practically tumbling down the stairs to answer it. But now, forty-five minutes later, I was starting to wonder why Barclay had felt it necessary to disturb my slumber and almost cause physical harm to a member of my household staff. “If this is a simple case of drowning,” I said, “then why am I here? Why are you, for that matter? Certainly a few policemen could handle this. It doesn’t seem important enough to take an inspector away from his home so early in the morning.” “It’s about the girl’s identity, Edward.” “Do you know who she is?” Barclay turned to face the river, where another wave of fog was threatening to crash upon the shore. “We do not. That’s the reason I summoned you.” “Ah. You want my bloodthirsty readers to try to identify her.” “Exactly. No matter how she died—and I fully believe it was accidental drowning, by the way—we’ve found nothing to indicate who she is or where she came from. From what I can tell, she looks like she was relatively healthy.” What he meant was that the girl didn’t resemble those desperate or ill women who sometimes threw themselves into the drink, their pockets stuffed with bricks. Nor did she look like one of the prostitutes who prowled the waterfront. Occasionally, those same wretched women would be found floating down the river, done in by either their employers or one of their customers. “You think she has family somewhere in the city?” I asked. “I do.” “Has no one reported a girl of her description missing?” Barclay shook his head. “Not yet, anyway. But a vivid description of her in today’s Evening Bulletin might help us find out who this poor thing is.” The fog bank he had been watching rolled onto shore and enveloped the pier. A policeman burst out of it, leaving tendrils of haze in his wake as he ran toward us. “Inspector,” he called, “someone is demanding to be allowed onto the pier.” “Tell them to wait for the ferry like everyone else,” Barclay snapped. “They don’t want the ferry, sir. They want to see the girl. They think they know her.” We both turned to the crowd at the cusp of the pier, which materialized into view as the fog bank drifted farther inland. At the front were two women, one young and the other much older. Their arms were linked as they tried to bypass the wall of policemen. The younger one spotted me and Barclay standing next to the dead girl. The wail of grief that followed told us both that she did indeed know the victim. “Well then, Barclay,” I said quietly, “it appears you don’t need the help of the Bulletin readers after all.” Barclay took a few steps toward the street and ordered his men to let them pass. As the women, arms now linked more tightly, continued onward in halting steps, I got a better look at them. The younger one appeared to be thirteen or so, although her face was so contorted by anguish that it was difficult to tell. The older woman appeared to be approaching forty. Unlike the girl, her features were as blank and unreadable as a recently erased blackboard. When they reached us, the girl fell to her knees, keening and crying next to the corpse. The other woman—her mother, very likely, for the resemblance was undeniable—remained standing. She kept hold of her daughter’s hand while staring not at the body but at the river from where it had come. She said something to the girl in German, words too quick and rough for me to comprehend. Her daughter eventually stood and, still weeping, wrapped her arms around her mother’s waist. Barclay gave her a moment to compose herself before saying, “I take it that you know this girl?” The girl looked first to her mother, who nodded faintly, then to Barclay. When she spoke, every word was punctuated with grief. “Yes, sir. She is my sister, Sophie.” Barclay gave me a brief, knowing look. This turn of events wasn’t a surprise to either of us. “I’m sorry for your loss,” he said. The woman nudged the girl. A brief exchange in German followed, their conversation both hurried and hushed. “My mother thanks you for your condolences,” the girl eventually told Barclay. “I’m going to need to ask a few questions,” he replied. “Giving me your names would be a good start.” “I am Louisa Kruger.” The girl gestured to the other woman. “This is my mother, Margarethe.” I stepped away from them, listening at a discreet distance while Barclay and Margarethe Kruger conversed, using young Louisa as an interpreter. During this complex back-and-forth, I learned that the family lived in Fishtown, just a few blocks from the waterfront. Sophie had last been seen at nine o’clock the previous night, when she climbed into the bed she shared with her sister. Sometime during the night, Louisa awoke to find her sister gone. When she hadn’t returned by dawn, Margarethe knew something was wrong, and they went looking for her. “And you don’t know when or why she left?” Barclay asked Louisa. “No, sir. When I fell asleep, she was there. When I awoke, she wasn’t.” “Does your mother have any idea?” “She doesn’t, sir.” “Did your sister disappear like this often?” I watched Mrs. Kruger’s face as Louisa repeated the question in German. The woman’s stoic expression didn’t change, even as she shook her head. Her daughter, however, revealed her emotions freely, making it clear she didn’t agree with her mother. “Wir mussen ihm sagen,” she said. Margarethe Kruger shook her head again. “Nein.” Barclay moved his gaze back and forth between them. “Is there something wrong?” “My mother does not want me to tell you that Sophie often left our home during the night,” Louisa said, eyeing her mother with caution. “I am grateful she does not understand English, so I can tell you without her disapproval.” “Why did your sister leave so frequently?” “I do not know, sir. I was usually asleep when it happened. But sometimes I heard people at the door, whispering if Sophie was awake. Sometimes she wouldn’t be, and my mother would wake her and send her off with the people who had called.” “You never asked why?” “I did once,” Louisa said. “But Mother slapped me and said, ‘Die neugier ist ein gift.’ ” “What does that mean?” Louisa lowered her eyes. “Curiosity is a poison.” Barclay stroked his chin before tugging slightly on the ends of his mustache. It was another one of his gestures that I knew well, indicating he was confused by something and trying to make sense of it all. I often said it made him look like a villain in a penny dreadful. “How long have you been looking for your sister today?” he asked. “An hour, sir.” I glanced at my pocket watch, seeing that Louisa and her mother had been walking the streets since well before five o’clock. They must have searched every square inch of Fishtown before reaching the waterfront and seeing the crowd gathered there. “When Sophie left during the night, was it uncommon for her to return after sunrise?” asked Barclay. “Sometimes,” Louisa said, “she would arrive as late as seven or eight.” “If that’s the case, why did you and your mother go looking for her so early?” The girl turned to her mother again and presented the question. This time, a flicker of emotion passed over Mrs. Kruger’s face, as quick and unwieldy as the tufts of fog sliding off the river. But it was enough for me to tell she was feeling an enormous amount of pain. The hurt filled her voice as she uttered her response in German. “My mother says we needed to go looking for Sophie because she knew she wasn’t going to return,” Louisa said on her behalf. “She suspected your sister had run away?” Louisa shook her head. “No, sir. My mother says she knew my sister was already dead.” Barclay’s eyes widened. I suspect mine did the same. For a moment, I thought a mistake was made and that something had been lost in translation. Then Barclay said, “How could she possibly know that?” “Because,” Louisa said, “Sophie told her so.”

By Braine @ Talk Supe When I picked up THINGS HALF IN SHADOW by Alan Finn, I expected it to be dark, sinister, totally creeptastic, something I wouldn't dare read before bed lest I risk getting nightmares. I'm mortally afraid of ghosts and reading/watching ghostly novels is a no-no for me unless I plan on staying up all night. Things might not have been as dark as I wanted it to be still I got what I came for and then some. The case that was Edward Clark and Lucy Collins started as a battle of wit and cunning and though theirs isn't a classic romance or even an HEA story, the tension between them is palpable and one can't help but root for these two to become a couple. You can tell from all their bickering and their chemistry that they're very much attracted to each other however there are some complications that must be entangled first before they can even entertain the notion. Now despite the impending romance involving Edward and Lucy, THINGS HALF IN SHADOW is romantically light as it focused more on the other aspects of the story. Now I don't know if there's a book 2 (I hope there is!) and if in case it's in the works, I'm sure things between our main characters are going to develop and heat up.As individual characters, Lucy is very feisty, witty, and such a go-getter, a truly likable character. How she landed as a medium was quite a tale, it was tragic and her gumption was what saved her so to speak. I'm just not sure how long she can keep running from her past though considering the can of worms that was opened here. As for Edward, I don't know what to make of him. He's not necessarily my type of hero, he blushes and faints, his methods in terms getting a story wasn't impressive to me, he's not swoony yet I found him rather entertaining. His backstory is heartbreaking, see his dad is in prison for murdering his mother and naturally Edward condemned his old man but there's some new evidence that came to light that may or may not exonerate his father. After 15 years of not speaking, Edward finally came to see his dad and my heart just clenched in sadness because of how desperate his father is and how Edward is so bitter and angry about the whole affair. Yet another reason why a sequel is needed, I sure would like to see father and son reunite and get closure. My favorite thing about this novel is how atmospheric it was. You can tell that AFinn did his research in painting an authentic backdrop for THINGS HALF IN SHADOW not just in terms of scenery but in the feeling it wanted to convey. I felt like there's a gray cloud covering Philadelphia from the grief that's stemmed from the war and the devastation it caused. Everyone was affected and everyone's looking for some sort of comfort from their loss even if it means embracing unconventional ways such as seances and the like, anything to get them reconnected and reunited with their dearly departed. The plot down to the personal stories of each character were well told, carefully fleshed, and empathetic. It was easy to understand why these people went to such great lengths, pay these mediums ridiculous amounts of money, they would do and trade anything just to have another moment with their loved one. The mystery was cleverly planned covered in layers of spirtualism and murder, it was quite the guesswork trying to figure out who killed Mrs. Pastor. The revelation was quite the production, it sure gave me goosebumps and it was done so perfectly and very reflective of the plot.If you're a fan of Jenn Bennett's Roaring Twenties, or Jamie Lee Moyer's Delia Martin, our you just enjoy ghost stories, I highly recommend you read THINGS HALF IN SHADOW.

He has a quiet house, a private income, a society fiancee. Even his job as a crime reporter has an air of predictability about it. It's not going to last.In Alan Flinn's Things Half in Shadow, Edward is about to have his secrets revealed, his life turned upside down and intriguing new avenues open up. It begins when his editor assigns him to a series of newspaper stories unmasking the fake mediums that have invaded the City of Brotherly Love, as they invaded many other cities, in the late 19th century. The first one Clark investigates is the medium whose leaflets are handed out in the street by an obnoxious boy.The medium, Lucy Collins, may be a fake but she is a spirited heroine in the mold of Amelia Peabody and Lady Julia Gray. Clark may think he's got her number after attending a seance. But it takes Mrs. Collins less than a day to discover his secrets, confront him with her knowledge and blackmail him into becoming partners to continue his investigations. He will get the stories his editor wants and she will help eliminate the competition. The first medium they visit, Mrs. Lenora Grimes Pastor, is not what they expected. She may well be the real thing. Too bad the seance ends with her death. Now Edward, Lucy and the others in the locked room are suspects in her death. Not even being best friends with the police inspector will help Edward Clark now. If only there was something in his past or any spirits to help him out ...Alan Finn's Things Half in Shadow works both as a whodunit and as a paranormal story that involves family connections and possible further mysterious complications. Finn conjures up the feel of post-war Philadelphia and the craze for spiritualists. The novel wraps up the story but it also makes it possible for further adventures. I foresee a great future for a series featuring Edward Clark and Lucy Collins.

This time period in America makes supernatural occurrences seem completely rational and acceptable.Mysticism, magic, mystery and chicanery combine to create a story full of action and excitement. I didn't want to put this one down. What I loved most of all where the main plot points that coalesced into the final conclusion. So many arcs, in fact, that there could be any number of spin off storylines. The main ending itself is so wide open for a sequel that just begs to be written.Capturing perfectly an America recovering from Civil War and the peoples looking to connect with those that are lost to the afterlife, the story centers itself on Mediums and their craft. Incorporating secret societies and some true supernatural elements lends an eeriness to this suspenseful tale. Carriage chases and deadly fights offer enough action to make the pages fly by too quickly. From the flowing dialog and well researched background to the inclusion of historical figures everything goes right with this story.

I have purchased this calendar for the past 5 years and love the lay out. Family member names need only to be listed once at the top of each month and then at a quick glance you can see each person's schedule. Many other, not so user friendly calendars require names to be written in for each week. I couldn't live without this now - our family's master plan!!

Very useful but you need to reinforce the coupons pocket By Val Led Very useful and convenient, it is the sixth year in a raw that I buy this calendar. The only inconvenient is that the pocket for the coupons break. So now as soon as I get the new one I put a large tape all around the pocket to make it stronger. So I do not end up finding all my coupons on the floor.

It took a week or two to adjust to the format but now I like it better than the traditional calendar layout. It is so much easier to see what everyone is doing each day. Very cute and super functional.

Practical, easily understood, compassionate book about a critical topic By JMS This is a very well thought out and practical tool to use to talk to your children about a scary and difficult subject. I can still remember (and visualize pictures) from a popular book my mom read to me as a child about sexual assault. It left me scared and filled with shame. This book is very different. For a child that has not experienced an assault, the deeper content will glide right over their heads and they will just think it's like any other book. For any child that has been through any kind of assault (not just sexual), they will immediately recognize what is being discussed. The book gives three different examples of "grown-up bullies" and what the kind of things they say to the children they are abusing. It is also very clear that most bullies are not strangers, but it may be a person that a child knows and even loves. I cannot stress enough the practicality of this book. It gives excellent advice for kids as to which adults they can trust with this kind of information. It helps them to understand that the abuse is absolutely not their fault and that the bully will use tricks to keep a child from telling anyone. At the end of the book it gives great advice to parents about how to talk to their children about protecting themselves and what to do if you find out your child has been abused. To top it off, it is written from a biblical perspective. I would highly recommend this short little book to every parent, grandparent, teacher or therapist.

Set in the Côte d’Or area of the Burgundy in the spring of 1986, the story weaves a fictional tale through the facts of the French wine business in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. David is on another European visits, searching for wines to import for his growing company, when he runs headlong into a wine theft and missing people. Intertwined through his adventures are a beautiful woman and a graceful Dutch barge on the Burgundy canals. This is a story of two damaged souls lovingly healing each other. Although this is a piece of fiction, most of the locations and the history, many of the adventures and some of the characters in it are real or are based in reality. The timeline follows events and experiences in the author’s life, sometimes slightly juggled to fit the crafting of the story. Fortunately, the violence is fictional. As for the embellishments and deep emotions, he’ll leave it to the reader to sort fact from fiction.

Like a fine bottle of French wine! ლ ლ (˘áµ‹ ˘ ) By Akje I suspect that a great deal of this story actually happened, because it's an emotional read and just has the feel of a true story. According to his blog, the author really does live on a Dutch barge in a French canal somewhere, and he's a wine expert and used to be a wine importer, and these details work their way into this absorbing mystery about a successful wine importer who stumbles into a murder mystery and wine heist. This book is categorized as historical fiction, but it could also be listed under crime thriller, action/adventure and romance.I think there's been some confusion because on Goodreads they've combined at least two different Michael Walshs on the same author page. This particular Michael Walsh isn't American and didn't author the books "Rules for Radical Conservatives" or "The People v. the Democratic Party", although he has authored a number of non-fiction works.Spilt Wine is written in third person, which is my personal preference, and there were no grammar, spelling, or punctuation problems. However, if I could take off half a star for formatting I might, because in my Kindle there's no double spacing between paragraphs or indentation at the beginning of each paragraph, although you can easily tell where each paragraph ends. Other readers might not notice or care, but it bothered me a bit.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very thorough book By T. Murrell This is one of the most comprehensive books on baby names that I've seen in a while. The author begins with an introduction and a brief explanation on how to use the book. The girls are first, followed by the boys. She first begins with Old and then New Testament names. But also listed are Christian concepts and virtues, Martyrs, and Saints. Each name has several aspects - Origin, Significance, Popularity, and also things like related names, or spelling variations.First I loved the cover. What a precious way to start the book. But the depth and layout of the book was also great. I love looking at baby names and learning of their origins and meanings. While soon to be parents are obviously the target audience, this book would also be wonderful for authors who are trying to name their characters. Definitely a fun book to own.I received this book free of charge from Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.

By Bill bergeron My wife bought three baby name books and this was by far the best. It was kind of painful getting through the other two, which were just a long alphabetical list. This one was more interesting because it was almost like a bunch of stories. We were able to skip some sections with names we didn't like the style of, so getting through it was also faster. The book had a surprising number of names and is worth reading, even if you aren't specifically looking for a Christian name.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love the details of this book. By S. C. Orio I really like this book. The best thing is that it tells you how popular the names are, which is really surprising for a lot of names. There are a lot of popular names that I haven’t heard and wouldn’t think anyone was using. It’s organized in sections, like names from Exodus or names for Mary, so don’t choose this book if you just want to look up names. But if you’re going to read a whole baby name book, this is much more fun to read

By F Wilderson III This is a great book for helping Black kids develop confidence and self-esteem in a world that tries to destroy them, daily. It is not one of those "if-life-gives-you-lemons-make-lemonade" pie in the sky books. Instead, it walks the young person through a series of questions and exercises which will help the child understand the forces at work in her/his own psyche and understand how to go about dissipating patterns of thought induced, in large part, by the psychic traumas our kids are subjected to, daily. I bought if for my granddaughter and her cousin. I only wish it was around when I was raising my daughter. Of course, non-Black children will benefit from this book, but I am not embarrassed or ashamed to appreciate it, specifically, as a Black grandfather. Frank B. Wilderson III

By Amazon Customer An amazing book that helps children take a mature assessment of their own thoughts, feeling, strengths, fears and goals. By raising issues from dealing with bullies to dealing with the loss of a family member and then asking those important questions with space for the children to write their own answers based on their own reality and experience, the author teaches children that with help, they can solve their own problems. Truly empowering and necessary in the fast paced minefield that children face today just growing up.
