There is spillover from Alzheimer’s to the rest of the family. It’s not just the patient who has this disease; it's the entire family and it affects everyone in different ways. Relationships change, financial burdens shift, communication becomes difficult, life becomes overwhelming at times. Doctors and care teams are concerned with the patient, but who is concerned with the family caregivers? While there is no how-to manual that reveals a magical coping mechanism for those around the person with the disease, there are perspectives that can help us all in understanding the effects of this devastating disease on the patient families. This is one perspective.

About the Author Elle Bee is the pen name of the primary caregiver in this book. She has been a caregiver for her son who grew up battling a childhood disease, and is no stranger to taking care of loved ones. Her early medical training has helped with her understanding of the disease process and potential treatments, but even that doesn’t help with the emotions associated with this disease. For the past 15 years, she has been an outspoken advocate for patients and caregivers, and has participated on numerous not-for-profit national and state boards and committees concerned with patients’ rights and self-advocacy for a number of organizations. She hopes to give voice to an overlooked and lonely demographic of caregivers with the perspective in this book. She’s in this for the long haul with her mother.

Briers I just finished reading this and it is a heartbreaking account of living with - and caring for - someone with Alzheimer's.I can't help but feel that this is an excellent read for someone that is experiencing this in their life. Often, it makes all of the difference in the world to know that you are not alone.

These are the details glossed over at the cocktail parties - "fine, everything's fine". The author is refreshingly transparent about the difficulty of caring for a parent with Alzheimer's. The book shares the extremely arduous process of getting the diagnosis in the first place and reveals the emotionally challenging aspects of dealing with other family members. Often, the primary caregiver is someone with a full-time job, kids to raise, and all of the other pesky concerns of everyday life...yet still needs to put one foot after another for their loved one. This book is highly recommended for everyone. It will open your heart. Alzheimer's truly affects the entire family - we need to have more open discussion about the support families need.

By Kelly Haynes This book is not a guide to dealing with Alzheimer's - although you will learn some tactics and get some good advice. This is a raw, gritty, emotional memoir that opens the eyes to the long, painful road a family with Alzheimers faces. Bee is open about the coping mechanisms she used and continues to use, some healthy - some not. The insights on family dynamics are honest and difficult to read. This book is worth your time, especially if you are seeking support - Bee lets you know that you aren't alone. There are countless other families going through the same thing.
