Review This book gave me so much insight into the experience of fatherless men. As a woman who parented my son alone, this book helped me understand that acknowledging the importance of fathers does not diminish my strength as a woman or as a mother. I will definitely be giving my son a copy. --Dr. Addie Ellis

He holds a Master s in Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree with a concentration in Human Resource Development at Drexel University. Born and raised in the small Caribbean island of Barbados, Mr. Inniss developed an early awareness of community and has continued to build on this solid foundation. David has had a lifelong intrigue about the state of fatherhood and more specifically, the state of fatherlessness in society. To that end he has focused his doctoral research on issues related to father absence. Having experienced fatherlessness himself, David views father absence as a core societal issue that spawns many of the ills in our communities today. Disproportion in academic performance, early exposure to substance abuse, and incarceration are but a few of the telling statistics that support his assertion. Through his research and growing expertise, David intends to uncover some of the factors that lead to the highly differentiated outcomes among men who were previously exposed to fatherlessness with specific focus on resiliency, masculinity and the reproduction of fatherhood. David currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Center for Fathers and Families, and ACE, a Sacramento-based nonprofit focused on mentorship for African American boys. He is a Senior Fellow of the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program a leadership development program aimed at developing catalysts for change and is President of the Graduate Students Association at Drexel University, Sacramento. Becoming the Father You Strived to Be By Pamela Hoyt In reading this book, I was surprised that it would give me so much insight into understanding how much critical and heartfelt thought men put into striving to be the best father without the tools to envision what that possibly may look like. It delves into studies of men from different walks of life with various fatherless experiences, yet arriving at the same conclusions of fear of faltering in trying to be the best father to their own sons. This book is a tasteful blend of research, personal encounters, historical and appropriate metaphors that grasp the reader and pulls them into an understanding of an experience they need not have had to been a part of.Being a single mother raising a child without a father, it helped me to see that there is a point where a fatherless father reaches an impasse where he either chooses to give his all to his children, or let the weight and disparity of not having the knowledge of exactly how to father be the deciding factor in walking away altogether, thus continuing the cycle of fatherlessness. This author shows you the most selfless and caring way of what choosing to be the Best dad you never had looks like.

Hanson Dr Inniss is a dynamic speaker and storyteller and in this book addresses the issue of fatherlessness in our society. Whether you are the father of young children, grandfather, mentoring young men, or are supporting your grown sons as they embark on their fathering journey, he provides observations and lessons that can inspire you to be a great father, grandfather, or mentor. Do you know of a man whose father was absent, apathetic, or disengaged? Dr. Inniss provides insights into the experiences of "fatherless" men, and how you can change your family legacy or mentor someone who wants to change their family legacy. He will inspire you to be engaged in the most important job you will ever have, that of being a Dad. I highly recommend this book!

My Dad raised my siblings and me without a blueprint to go by. Reading this book has helped me better understand how difficult it must have been for my Dad, and has enabled me to forgive and let go of some of the lingering resentment over some of the mistakes he made.I enjoyed learning about the author's background. To say it is interesting is an understatement; he has enough material for a decent, weighty biography. The steps detailed in the book, make sense to me and I look forward to applying them. In particular the written contract covering my commitments to my kids.
