About the Author Deemed ‘the father of the scientific detective story’, Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman’s place amongst the finest of crime writers.

Eight forays into Edwardian forensics By Patto There are eight stories in this, the earliest collection of Dr. Thorndyke short stories, published in 1909. The emphasis is on forensics, and it will soon be clear to readers of twenty-first-century police procedurals that Edwardian science was impressively modern. A. Austin Freeman spent many hours at the microscope and the camera, examining all manner of potential evidence. Behind Thorndyke the forensics wizard was Freeman the Edwardian man of science. Freeman assured the reader in his preface to this collection that he confined himself to "authentic facts and practicable methods."Freeman actually invented and tested a diabolical murder weapon for one of these stories.The analytic details and Thorndyke's feats of inference are great fun. Thorndyke analyzes the soles of boots, a tress of hair in the grip of a murder victim, the dust embedded in an old hat, and sand found on a pillow. He sees through a cipher and identifies the cause of a nervous client's hallucinations.In the course of these cases, Thorndyke exhibits knowledge of optics, ballistics, tides and reap-tides, racial differences in hair follicles, minute properties of dust and dirt, and characteristics of different types of paper and ink. In the background are various human dramas involving jealous lovers, greedy relatives, and scheming crooks.Because the stories are so early, they're replete with Edwardian atmosphere. Colorful peripheral characters abound. The stories don't feel short because of the richly detailed narration.I loved this collection. In case you'd like to know the story titles, they are: The Man with the Nailed Shoes, The Stranger's Latchkey, The Anthropologist at Large, The Blue Sequin, The Moabite Cipher, The Mandarin's Pearl, The Aluminum Dagger, and A Message from the Deep.A great read for fans of vintage detective stories.

Austin Freeman created a better detective than Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. His "Dr. Thorndyke" is Holmes with TV's Quincy added: a more logical detective who explains things better to the reader. Indeed, some of the stories are "inverted", i.e. you know who did it and how, but you follow the good doctor as he unravels the case. I wanna new copy of his cases!

This book was written for people like myself who struggle to maintain their prayer life By Dean Rice About 25 years ago I went on a singles retreat where Tom Stuart spoke on prayer. What I remember is that it was the one time I can honestly say someones teaching had a profound impact on my life. When I got back I resolved myself to get up very early and pray. When I saw that Tom has just released this book on prayer I ordered it immediately, mainly because I couldn't remember what about that weekend changed my life and why I had seemingly forgotten it. This book was written for people like myself who struggle to maintain their prayer life.Once I started reading the book I instantly remembered why Tom's teaching meant so much to me. Most sermons emphasize why you should pray. While Tom covers that, more than that, he shows how to make your prayer life successful. Just a few examples, and without revealing too much. He shows what the most powerful prayer you can pray is. While that might sound rather presumptious to know that, once you read it you will agree. He also covers 6 prayers that God always answers, or what to do when all else fails, and that was extremely encouraging.Tom's style is thorough, Biblically sound and very easy to read. In fact, I don't think many chapters are more than 4 pages, and you can go back to this book like a refrence manual because it addresses individual subjects that we all need to go back to at times.

By Dale Gilmore I recently finished reading my colleague Tom Stuart's book on Igniting an Impassioned Prayer Life. Tom's personal passion for prayer comes through in this book. His maturity gained as a pastor/teacher in the local church plus his more recent work in the house of prayer locally have given rise to this very insightful book. The book is very readable. The chapters are short, the main thoughts are in bold, and the explanatory paragraphs are Scripture-filled. There are 43 topics covered in Seven Sections which makes the book a useful reference tool as well as a devotional journal. Tom has made that last aspect easier by adding a "For Further Meditation and Application" section to the end of each of the 43 topics covered. The book begins with a call to be in the Presence of God through prayer and moves through illustrating various types of prayer, and ends with a section on how to overcome obstacles in our prayer life. The book is remarkably meaty considering how easy it is to read. And Tom uses language that is clear, crisp and easy to understand. The author exhorts us into a deeper personal prayer life, but he also addresses the importance of prayer in the corporate life of a local church. He also addresses the growing movement of houses of prayer that are emerging all across the planet right now. My favorite quote in the book is in a response the author makes to a lament that Leonard Ravenhill made about prayerlessness of the American church. The author writes "My desire is that the remedy offered here to Ravenhill's diagnosis of the prayer-less church offers hope to you in your church situation. I dream of the day when every local church is truly a house of prayer, where there are more agonizers than organizers, more pray-ers than players or payers, more clingers than singers, more intercessors than interferers. Will you join me in dreaming---and praying?" Yes, Tom, we will join you!

I found it a beautifully written, flowing book about becoming a house of prayer. I found so many golden nuggets about communion with God which I had not thought of before. This book is from the heart. I am impassioned.

Set in Philadelphia as the British occupy the city during the American War for Independence, the reader is immediately absorbed into Dr. Archibald Browne's family. A family of split loyalties to American causes and British crown, the reader will not know where the real loyalites lie until the end of the book. Not only is the story itself engaging and, at times, a page-turner, one realizes just how difficult taking sides were within the city and within the family.Though I've read a fair amount of fiction and nonfiction about this decisive point of American history, I always learn more interesting details about life during this time with books such as this.This would be a good family read-aloud. The vocabulary and sentence structure is advanced enough that any age below eighth grade would find reading difficult. But this is a solid book for independent high school reading.

By Kate in Sacramento I chose this book based on a brief catalog listing since it was set during the Revolutionary War. I had no idea what was really in it, but since it so thoroughly covered the occupation of Philadelphia by the British, I figured it might be worth the read. I was right.The details the author, C.D. Baker, gives are fascinating! There are things shared within the story that I have read no where else. It was details like this that gave the story depth. The heaviness of the occupation and the threat of the war encroaching the family--and the fractured nature of the loyalties within the family--are depicted in a convincing manner. I found myself really caring for the characters. It was quite a believable story and it felt like I was there.There is an actual list in the book, and evidence that there was one in history, but I will leave that for the reader to discover. I highly recommend this book. It was a wonderful realistic way to immerse yourself in the life of Revolutionary Philadelphia and is especially good as a read-aloud to your children.Historical fiction at its best!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Historically inaccurate historical fiction By Liberty's Pen I am a lover of historical fiction. Good historical fiction, that is. On occasion, I even dabble in writing it myself. When writing, there is one rule I hold to steadfastly, and which I hold the author to when reading a work of historical fiction. This rule can be summarized in three words: be historically accurate. And this is where "The List" falls short.I cannot attest to the accuracies/inaccuracies of the historical characters portrayed nor "the list" itself. Mr. Baker may well be completely sound when it comes to such matters, and I am very willing to concede this point. But whatever merits the book may have in this department pale in comparison to the blatant inaccuracies regarding 18th century colonial customs.It is not going too far to say it seems Mr. Baker has taken an average 21st century family, dressed them in mob caps and breeches, tossed them in a time machine, and rewound the clock. No self-respecting woman of the colonial era would have darkened the door of a tavern, yet to "The Man Full of Trouble" is where the doctor takes his family to celebrate his wife's birthday. "Eating out" simply was not a common custom back in that day. However, even if I were to grant Mr. Baker grace regarding this point, a gentleman surely would not take his wife to his "favourite tavern," as his tavern of choice and "family-friendly" would not have been one and the same.This is just the tip of the iceberg. Most other customs, mannerisms, and speech-ways presented in the novel are far more 21st century than 18th century. The writing style itself is stilted, and much of the dialogue forced.As I did not finish reading the book, I didn't feel it was fair to give it only one star, hence the two star rating. Rather than spending your hard-earned pennies on this volume, I would recommend investing in a good copy of Esther Forbes' Newberry Award-winner, Johnny Tremain.

I don’t know where to begin to express how profoundly moved I am by what Collins Hemingway has accomplished with The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen. But I’ve got to preface my praise by confessing that English lit was my minor in college, and Austen’s work was definitely not my cup of herbal tea – not then, and probably never. That said, I really admire this book and will recommend it to anyone who enjoys the works of Jane Austen.Prolific author Hemingway has ventured boldly into the world of fiction, and the result is a truly inspired reimagining of the life of English novelist Jane Austen. It’s an audacious premise: What if the revered literary figure had married? And what if she had married into money? The world’s legions of Austen devotees will love this story. Even one who is anything but a Janeite will admire Hemingway’s wickedly clever approach to the tale. He tells it in the delightfully mannered Regency era style of Austen herself, paying homage to her groundbreaking attention to irony, wit, plot and the themes of love, loyalty and relationships.Like Jane’s imagined wedding night, this story is a bit slow at getting to the fireworks, but once it does it soars aloft like a hot air balloon – and quite literally. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Charming and imaginative! By DotsDaughter Mr Hemingway has written a a sweet, charming and engaging furbelow of a novel. It swiftly transports the reader to early 19th century England when the country dominated the world in commerce, science and on the high seas, and to the constricted social world of Jane Austen. One can feel the rough cobblestones of Bath beneath thin slippers and the cold damp of fire lit rooms, belying the warmth of familial interactions. The book imaginatively portrays an alternative history for the famous author. We are introduced to the young, handsome albeit clumsy suitor and to Jane's pronounced negative feelings about the institution of marriage. The title gives away the denouement, not lessening the pleasure of the journey our heroine takes a whit. I look forward to the second novel with great anticipation!

I found myself reading the last of this book rather than preparing for a party I was to give that evening. I certainly recommend this book and am awaiting the next in the series.

How to Discipline a Toddler is a very well written book that contains a comprehensive guide that every parent would find absolutely helpful. In this book you'll learn how to deal with your child's outbursts and understand the contributing factors behind every child's tantrums. Tips such as setting rules and limits. One of the best advice I find relevant is letting the toddler know who is in charge, which I find happening in every household, I love the fact that this book stresses on this issue that adults should be in-charged not the toddler especially if concerns safety. Excellent book!

By Shannon Alvarez Once a child is having trouble controlling their emotions, it’s even more essential for you to be in control of your own. Be ready to handle this situation as best you can without losing your cool. We’ve already spoken about this earlier in the book, but it’s a very difficult thing to do when your child is acting out, choosing not to act out yourself. Instead of becoming emotional yourself, remember that by staying calm, you are demonstrating to your child that they are not going to create a reaction from you.

On one hand, you don't want to be too rough, but on the other you want your child to understand respect and adherence to rules. This book gives a great way to balance the two by giving great strategies for disciplining a toddler in the best way possible. I really enjoyed how you can reinforce good behavior in a child while also reducing their temper tantrums. I learned quite a lot from this book and will be using it as a helpful resource in the future.
