Genetically extended life and political chaos in the United States lead to conflict between young and old. Youthful-appearing 70-year-old baby boomers, demanding entitlements and accused of selfishness, become targets of opportunity. A new government bans the life-extending drug and substitutes the mandatory drug Fuchsia, administered in Heavenwards Centers constructed across the country. Fuchsia elicits blissful, spiritual experiences for approximately a year, and then the older person dies peacefully, without fear. The Supreme Court mandates an alternative to Fuchsia: a system of Elderhostels. An Elderhostel is a guarded compound providing minimal food, shelter, and first aid to elderly residents. This novel depicts the constant struggles and occasional joys of Elderhostelers working and loving together, for survival and dignity. The protagonist has two identities. In 2007, Robert Presto is a genetic scientist who creates the original life extension drug. Widely admired, he becomes the lover of a beautiful, ambitious woman with powerful political connections. We follow his life from 2007 to 2022 as he finds love and success, loses love and success, escapes to become a pimp in the best brothel in Paraguay, and returns to Toledo and its Elderhostel under a new identity, Dyre Holmgren. In the Elderhostel, his friends and lovers include: Oona Mulcahey, Elderhostel lawyer and self-described founder of the Single Mothers Liberation Front; Oona’s wild child daughter Thetis and others – disabled or not – under Oona’s fierce protection; Lenny Leifer, raconteur and sculptor working in clay from the banks of the Maumee River (Mohammed Ali said he looked like a human bowling ball); Dr. Steve Monroe, dapper Elderhostel physician struggling through the mourning process; Regine Lingen Palisano, German-born survivor of World War II, New York homeless person, and expert in bedbug extermination; Johnny Rogers, leader of the elderly Gabbies in their televised sblattergun mock-battles against the youthful Fatties; Vivee Powers, most powerful person in the world as U. S. Vice President and admirer of Robert Presto/ Dyre Holmgren; and Najla Al-Musawi, larger-than-life organizational genius formerly committed to Calvinism and management of the finest brothel in South America. This novel explores the emergence of the third phase of humanity. In the first, long phase, the human adapted to the environment. In the second phase, the phase of technology, the human adapted the environment. In the third phase, predicted to be the longest, humans engineer themselves in accordance with their wishes. Themes reflect identity, family, community, resilience, ethics, sexuality, and love. And you really have to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Our Future Alternatives? By ppp Imaginative. Exploration of the community of the Maumee island elderhostel, a self-selected group of rebels, was especially appealing to me. Their foray into the alternative future their society had planned for them (doped merriment amidst ferris wheels and fireworks -- but only one year long) is not just exciting but moving, as a new resident there reflects on how she came to accept this alternative. The mid-book adventure in Paraguay, although interesting, didn't quite fit for me; thus the 4 stars..
