OVERVIEW An adventure tale, Left. is the story of five flawed, courageous women, one hapless farmer and three men of color realizing their dream. Often humorous, this fast-paced read peppered with colorful characters will take your head and heart to a time in history normally shunned as too morbid to address. What happened to those unfortunate families trapped on remote farms in southwest Missouri amid the Bushwacker strife of the Civil War? Most packed all they could, evacuating the area. Some became unfortunate victims of the Bushwackers’ wrath as neighbor turned against neighbor. Pearl and Carl Weller and the Martin family, secluded on small farms in the Ozark hills, didn’t consider themselves in danger. To own his farm, Carl thinks he’s going to Ft. Scott to enlist with Uncle Sam for his father. That doesn’t work out. City girl Pearl assumes she’ll learn to love life on the farm with her friends, MayBee and Esther Martin. That didn’t happen either. Esther Martin was a content recluse, happy at home with her ‘girl’ MayBee and son, Lemuel. Tragedy upsot that. Italicized thoughts give this tri-plot novel a new dimension as you embrace the minds and hearts of five very different souls who never dreamed the chaos of the Civil War would find them…left.

Review Steve Cottrell, regional Civil War Historian: Martha Haut brings this side of the conflict back to life, taking the reader straight into the middle of the grueling stress and constant fear such people experienced. In her fine historical novel, she draws the reader into the lives of the Wellers and Martins and their fascinating circle of farm hands, friends, and foes. The reader is treated to an entertaining and suspenseful ride through our Civil War's wild and wooly western frontier! --Steve Cottrell

Set in Southwest Missouri during the Civil War, it tells the story of those left to their own devices. Left is full of very strong women and characters so full and unique that you'd swear they are real people. After I finished reading this I thought about the characters for days and wondered what would happen to them in the future. Hopefully there will be a sequel. I highly recommend this novel for everyone.
