Misplaced takes a glimmer of historical fact and weaves a story of conviction, unlikely friendships and mysterious forces at work in the Land of Enchantment. What are misgivings of a young woman compared to the needs of the greatest nation of the ancient world? Khara’s life has been spent preparing for the day when she will become Egypt’s first ruling woman. A dutiful daughter, she embraces a future already written in stone. Until the day of her coronation, when her father is brutally murdered, plunging the House of Pharaoh into what history will come to know as “70 rulers in 70 days.” To save her life, she is unwittingly thrust into the future where she lands in the Mal Pais of the American Southwest. Confused and alone, she crosses the Mexican border illegally where she is rescued by Victoria Barron, a well-meaning if not emotionally misplaced immigration attorney. Together they must outmaneuver the artifact smuggler bent on keeping Khara, the find of a lifetime in the present for his own gain. Can they find a way to return Khara to the past to claim her destiny? What happens to history as we know it if they fail? Praise for Misplaced “S.L. From the Author Writing Misplaced was about telling a story that I hope will leave readers wondering.  I tried to write strong, yet realistic women as my protagonists, but I put them in the most unusual circumstances and sprinkled it with a bit of history and time-travel.  I'm fascinated by the mysterious; legends that continue to play out in the modern world, the unseen forces that may be guiding us.Being an author has brought me such joy; the kind that comes from realizing your dreams and having such a good time doing it.  And I would be remiss if I didn't say that my first book is a love letter of sorts; to my upbringing and the place I grew up.  I have never found a city like El Paso, and growing up in the southwest definitely shaped the way I see the world.

About the Author S.L. Hulen was born to an American aerospace engineer and a Mexican homemaker who met in the flower shop of the famed Hotel Sylvia's in Ciudad Juarez.   The rich history and mysterious locations of the southwest serve as the setting for her first novel, Misplaced. She presently lives with her husband in Phoenix where the flavors, traditions, and soul of the southwest continue to inspire her.

Had no idea what to expect and found myself pushing through the pages with lightning speed eager to find out how the story would play out. I am that person that goes to the library to check out 5-10 books at a time regardless of subject or author in hopes of finding some treasures. I'd certainly put this in the pleasant surprise category.

As I look through the dozens and dozens of books I have read on my Kindle, not only do I not remember what some of them were about, but I don't even remember reading them! I don't know if this speaks more to the author or to me. Traveling a lot means I always have a book to read; being on a flight without a book would be torture. I like a tight story without an author who tries to impress me with an endless description of a leaf on a tree. I've seen trees. I know what a leaf looks like. You can slip into a coma waiting for the writer to get back to the story. I also don't like when every chapter is like starting a new book, and the author neatly ties them all together about two thirds through. It feels like I'm reading several books at once. Now that you know what I don't like, let me tell you why I loved Misplaced. The story is tightly woven, well written, fast-paced and well crafted. And, it's a clever plot and a race to the end.Khara is an Egyptian princess who is experiencing some unfortunate family issues back home, and for her safety is transported about 2,000 years into the future-landing in Texas. With the help of immigration attorney-advocate, Victoria, Khara has to decide if she wants to attempt a return to Egypt or possibly a life in the Southwest. And if you think returning to Egypt is all that easy wait until you read what poor Khara and Victoria have to encounter along the way. It's a little more stressful than a four hour lay-over in Houston.I enjoyed Ms. Hulen's debut novel and look forward to her next one. She tells an exciting story the way an exciting story should be told. This one I will remember.

Hulen recreates an enthralling world in the opening chapters of MISPLACED and right from the start tugs at readers hearts. When the groomed sands of Egypt suddenly change to the seedy El Paso/Mexico border, the bright and highly educated Princess Khara finds herself swept to modern America, leaving her no time to mourn the assassination of her beloved father. She is desperate to return home but would have had little chance of surviving the ruthless Mexican coyotes if not for the intervention of resourceful immigration's attorney Victoria Barron. As Victoria becomes more and more embroiled in Khara's incredible stories about crossing the boundaries of time and protecting priceless Egyptian artifacts, they are chased by greedy antiquities dealers who will stop at nothing to get those items. The story takes on a more mystical tone as Khara struggles to replace the complex religion from which she'd been torn, and ends at the base of a jagged stone obelisk on a barren mountaintop. The ensuing confrontation between the women and their pursuers leads to a startling resolution.MISPLACED is an engrossing story, especially for fans of Egyptian history. I loved it! I recommend it to everyone.--Connie Flynn
