One woman's unexpected friendship with a plantation slave awakens a journey of discovery into the heart of love, justice, and God's design for all mankind. Eighteen-year-old Eliza Drake longs for a freedom beyond her grasp. With pressures from her wealthy cotton planter father and a proposal on the horizon, her future is already determined. But when friendship blooms with a candid field slave, she unearths the dark side of her sophisticated upbringing and braves the danger of educating blacks in the antebellum South. Caught between two worlds, Eliza wrestles between loyalty to her family and her conscience, leading to her ultimate quandary - can love exist beyond the accepted bounds of race and class? And what peril might lay in wait if she follows the prodding of her heart?

She discusses the issues of slavery from the point of view of the slaves and the plantation owners, but particularly through the eyes of a girl who was raised with the idea as she begins to understand the harshness of the world around her. This is not to say the book is primarily about the cruelty of slavery. Rather, it is about a girl becoming a young woman as she begins to deal with having the world she was comfortable in become increasingly complex and the responsibility that comes with reaching maturity. Sanford handles these topics with grace, giving us moments of levity and quiet, while walking through some pretty touchy subjects.I have to say my favorite parts of this book are the characters. Some I adore and others I want to slap around a bit, and I found myself wanting to know more about them with each page. She does a good job of keeping things enjoyable and I was drawn in every time I picked the book up. I found myself having very strong opinions when it came to the characters, which I take as a sign that they have become real to me. It is definitely worth the read.

November Rain By Amazon Customer I love this book and I'm glad the author had the courage to write an interracial and a inspirational romance set in such a terrible time in our history. It seems as if many mainstream authors shy away from writing this type of romance, especially one set in this time period. Believe it or not there are so many incidents that happen like this and some of the couples would flee to Canada, Mexico or other places. I just wondering where are the authors at who can write these stories. I can't wait for the next two book in this series. I hope Luke and Eliza have a happy ending.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. no greater love By jan hegelein This tale speaks volumes of both the valor of the human spirit when yielded to God and the depths of pride and arrogance that percolate in a heart devoid of the Master's love. Journey back to the time of slavery and journey with a young woman who risks all o see her slaves as fellow men and women created by God. Marvel at her strength to face a perilous journey that leads her further into God's heart of love. A great read, both entertaining and soul stirring.
